Review: Brit soul legend Omar's new work finds him in full command of his craft, gracefully vaulting through decades of soul, funk and jazz with a sound that feels both grounded in history and refreshingly modern. His collaborations - from Paul Weller's understated elegance to Giggs' streetwise energy - highlight his remarkable versatility, yet it's his own magnetic voice that pulls everything together. The arrangements are lush, rich with organic instrumentation and tinged with Caribbean warmth, offering a sound palette that's as riveting as it is all-consuming. Tracks like 'There's Much Love In The World' reflect the timeless optimism that runs through Omar's music, celebrating unity while reminding us of the power of soulful connection. Despite the star-studded line-up of guests, this release is unmistakably Omar's. His voice - distinctive and effortlessly smooth - remains at the heart of each song, whether he's trading verses with Raheem DeVaughn or harmonising with Ledisi's rich tones. The musical textures on display are just as varied, blending organic rhythms with electronic beats that never overwhelm the track's emotional core. Over time, Omar's musical approach has only become more layered and expansive, yet his unmistakable sound remains intactianchored in the originality that made him a key figure in modern soul and funk.

Review: ONEGRAM, the cult Japanese reggae band formed in 2011, is back with a new album that takes in everything from their genre-defying journey so far. Though known for blending reggae with lovers rock, they also fold in conscious vibes and disco grooves to their sodden and here the Tokyo-based outfit delivers ten tracks that reflect their unfiltered present. It's their first original album in five years following 2021's cover-focused Random Access Music and highlights include the soulful hit 'After the May Rain,' the groovy 'Crazy For You' (which even got praised by Incognito members) and a dreamy take on Bread & Butter's 1974 classic 'Pink Shadow.'. It's an honest, heartfelt and unmistakably ONEGRAM sound.

Instant (4:32)
Udon (5:00)
The Deepest Bowl (5:39)
Picante Beef (4:48)
Review: Swedish multi-instrumentalist Gustav Horneij, best known as OPE, finally lands on Jazzaggression with a new 10" release that showcases his singular approach to spiritual jazz and overdubbed improvisation. It's a new release composed entirely around bamboo flutes, but the instrumentation stretches far beyond i drums, bass, reeds, harp and subtle string textures are all played by Horneij himself, each part layered with a feel for groove and tone that's entirely unforced. Tracks like 'Instant' and 'Picante Beef' hit with warm, rolling basslines and smoky modal phrasing, while 'The Deepest Bowl' moves slower, drawing you in with flickers of flute and ambient space. 'Udon' is a clear standout, combining a floating top line with an earthy, locked-in rhythm section that could loop forever without tiring. Despite the solo setup, nothing feels precious or overcooked i the mood stays loose and tactile, like a small ensemble jamming in real time.

Review: First put out in 1973, this jazz gem from Miyako ?tsuki makes a triumphant return after 50 years. Nihon Min'y?: Latin Feeling is a forward-thinking fusion of traditional Japanese folk songs and Latin jazz grooves that was recorded when ?tsuki was in her 20s and remains one of her most unique works. Backed by elite Japanese jazz musicians like flautist Akira Miyazawa and guitarist Sadayasu Nakamaru, the music transforms min'y? into vibrant, rhythm-driven pieces with arrangements by Akira Komachi. It's a rich cultural crossover that's both daring and elegant and this reissue includes two bonus tracks and a vintage-style obi.

Review: The Middle East has always invoked a sense of wonder and escapism, even if a singular tag for a vast and varied global region is an instant disservice. So it's not much of a surprise to find many countries currently in the throes of an explosive rediscovery of psychedelic sounds. Ouzo Bazooka is just one example of the kind of bands we're talking about. Originally solo project from Uri Brauner Kinrot - a musician, scientist and producer - the vehicle quickly grew into the fully fledged group we have loved over the last five albums and ten years, give or take. Widely considered pioneers of the burgeoning scene, Kapaim (Hebrew for 'palms') cements their status as a cut above most psyche rock bands anywhere on the planet. Informed by jazz, soul, blues, and indigenous musical traditions of the South Eastern Mediterranean, it's a smooth and intoxicating ride.

The title of this one gives you an idea of what to expect - jazzy melodies and sophisticated house beats. He does so with a modern viewpoint but also plenty of reverence for the glory days of jazzy house. Trumpets, saxophones and guitars all feature here and embellish the drums with quality, meaningful layers of melody adn mood. As he merges the past and present, this richly textured work shines with improvisation and timeless deep house warmth.

Here he back on the Tokyo label that's housed all his Fog material and flexing his deep command of house, all infused with his signature warmth. Classy deep house cuts like 'Red Morning' sit next to Chicago-flavoured stompers like 'Jack Out' and disco-filtered bangers like 'Dance To The Air' and he even flips the script with 80s-inspired funk on 'Night Driver' and the Balearic dreamscape 'Sun Moon Lake.' Review: Far Out Recordings reissues a hidden Argentinian gem with this offering, the late Agustin Pereyra Lucena's elusive 1988 LP, now restored from the original tapes. A guitarist rooted in Brazilian tradition but shaped by European travel and political exile, Lucena channels both clarity and melancholy into his playing. 'Luces de Valeria' and 'Preparativos Maritimos' offer delicate phrasing and compositional grace, while his take on Baden Powell's 'Pequeno Vals' drifts with lyrical restraint. The interplay between flute, brushed drums and nylon-string guitar reveals a liquid sensibility-evident too on 'Tema Barroco' by long-time collaborator Guilhermo Reuter. Anchored in Buenos Aires but marked by a traveller's perspective, these pieces shift subtly from samba-inflected intimacy to a cooler, more spacious lyricism. Lucena's phrasing reflects his belief that proximity to water affects one's musical flow-an idea borne out here in every fluid turn and tide of this understated masterwork.

Review: Expanding To One is the third album from Phi-Psonics and is a serene meditation on community, connection and healing. Led by bassist Seth Ford-Young, the project captures the spirit of six live and intimate sessions recorded in Pasadena's Healing Force Of The Universe record store and the tracks, which were largely improvised, glide through soulful, spiritual jazz with warmth and clarity. Highlights like 'There's Still Hope' and 'Healing Time' showcase a rotating ensemble of LA's most sensitive players and they all create music that is both grounding and transcendent. Thoughtfully edited and deeply personal, this is the sort of record that cajoles you into a space of stillness, togetherness and quiet, essential reflection.

The record in fact emerges from six intimate, largely improvised sessions at Pasadena's Healing Force Of The Universe record store. Romeo Poirier - "Thalassocratie" (extended version) (5:33)
Memotone - "The Way In(Side)" (6:42)
Review: Legendary Finnish label Sahko returns with a curveball on its sub-label Puu, meaning wood or tree. While the three artists featured on this EP may seem like unlikely bedfellows, American minimal producer Bruno Pronsato, French fourth world explorer Romeo Poirier & British ambient producer Memotone, their sounds are united in a quest for the organic, the tropical & the gaps between genres. Bruno Pronsato's 'Above The Laundrette (Manieres Bizarres mix)' is an exploration of organic percussion, treading similar paths to percussionist Eli Keszler. The second track is a welcome extended version of 'Thalassocratie' from Poirier's excellent Hotel Naga LP. The pick of the three goes to Memotone's 'The Way In(side)' which sounds like a lost balearic cut from Jon Hassell's seminal Dream Theory In Malaya.

Review: This clear wax edition feels like an invitation into Worcestershire-born global traveller Will Holland's inner circle i not just as a selector but as a connector of people, scenes and sonic microhistories. Across the two LPs, his DJing reveals the subtle hand of a musician: textured, tempo-flexible, deeply in tune with the artists he features. JJ Whitefield's 'The Mind Is A Palace' and Alfa Mist's slow-burner 'In My Defence' lay the introspective groundwork, while The Heliocentrics and Dialect bring fuzz and abstraction into view. Side B pivots to percussive warmth, from JKriv's whistle-led 'Pifeiro Malandro' to Holland's own dusty 'Twang', before the humid swagger of Frente Cumbiero and a tripped-out remix of 'Theme From Selva' usher in Side C. Things then spiral toward the club, with 'Eko Eko', 'Throw Dat Azz' and 'Scintille' all bringing punch and release. The final stretch, featuring The Maghreban, Meridian Brothers and Sobredosis, casts a glowing ambiguity over the mix i just like Holland's sets, it ends not in resolution, but in feeling.

Review: Stretching across four sides of vinyl, this double LP from Worcestershire-born producer, bandleader and serial collaborator Will Holland traces his journey through transcontinental rhythms and dusty dancefloors. The carefully spaced tracklist opens with JJ Whitefield's deep-thinking 'The Mind Is A Palace', before the record quickly dips into London fusion with The Heliocentrics and Alfa Mist's 'In My Defence'. Dialect's fragmented ambient textures play the foil to Holland's own 'Twang', while JKriv's 'Pifeiro Malandro' evokes smoky Rio funk as filtered through downtown New York. Later on, Frente Cumbiero and a rework of 'Theme From Selva' provide a humid middle section before things sharpen up. Club-leaning selections like 'Eko Eko', 'Scintille' and Anna Morgan's 'Throw Dat Azz' burst across the later sides, pushed by bass pressure and broken-beat finesse. Meridian Brothers' 'Un Grande Nubarron Se Alza En El Cielo' and Sobredosis's 'No Llores Por Mi' bring an eerie sweetness to the close i a reminder that for Holland, emotion and groove are always entwined.

Review: It would be fair to say that Rahaan's Chicago Club Culture series, which here reaches its second instalment, is something of a passion project, inspired as it is by - in his words - "the golden age of Chicago club culture". Our reading of that is the 1970s and 80s, with all of the tracks on show being versions of cuts big on Windy City dancefloors in that period. The double-pack is heavy on tried-and-tested treats, from the expansive, Clavinet-sporting disco rush of 'Do You Like It' and the delay-laden, percussion-heavy brilliance of 'Columbian Dance' (all chanted vocals, punk-funk sax sounds, heavy electronic bass and layered Latin beats), to the crispy and crunchy, Chic-influenced excellence of 'Jealous For No Reason' and the low-down disco hustle of closing cut 'Can't Shake Your Love'.

Review: No one's edits and disco bombs slap quite like Rahaan's. The US master of all things soulful and funky can tap right into your core with his work and this new EP on Hot Biscuit is the latest example of that. 'Get Up' opens with retro disco favours, funky guitars and lung-busting vocals that bring the heat. 'Zombies' sinks into a nice silky sound with sliding cymbals and hi hats and knotted bass, then 'How' slows it down a bit for a more playful and seductive disco sound with nice horns and squelchy bass. Three real heaters.

Review: After 20 years of soulful and authentic rock & roll blues, Eli Paperboy Reed definitely had a right to celebrate. Originally recorded in a basement in Allston, Massachusetts, completely live onto and direct to analogue tape in mono, this collection was first released on a limited run of 300 CDs, self-released, and mostly sold by hand on the streets of Cambridge, close to Harvard University. Now redone, pressed-up and polished for 'proper release', you get all 12 original tracks and another 14 that never saw the light of day before. Four of those were recorded at the time of the others, the remainder come from a radio session the following year. All of them are incredible, and prove that it's not only the Deep South that can make these raw and unflinchingly honest sounds.

Review: A new collaborative release from Chicago-based musicians Will Miller aka Resavoir and Matt Gold finds two long-time friends turning their shared obsession with 60s and 70s Brazilian music into something glowing, spacious and gently psychedelic. Both seasoned producers - Miller with credits for SZA and Whitney, Gold known for work alongside Makaya McCraven - they trade virtuosity for vibe here. Tracks like 'Canopy' and 'Dewy' float past on brushed drums, weightless keys and muted trumpet lines, inviting you into a world that feels humid and soft-edged, like a Sao Paulo sunrise seen through Chicago smog. 'Zero Gravity' lives up to its name with glassy guitar runs and smeared synths, while 'Diversey Beach' could pass for a bossa nova daydream refracted through ambient jazz. Nothing here tries too hard and that's the point: it's music for breathing, for early mornings or long windows of time with nothing to do. A quietly dazzling listen from two players unbothered by hype, weaving warmth and clarity into something slow-burning and completely their own.

Review: Marc Ribot's latest LP draws on decades of work and reflection, gluing fragments recorded over years back together to form a coherent whole, and finally foregrounding Ribot's own voice in the process. Sparked by a memory of one of his daughter's childhood drawings, Map Of A Blue City perambulates states of disorientation and openness, tracing the emotional topography of loss. Stark truths pivot against tender storytelling, at once producing an intimately distant space. "Recording production is really complicated," he says, "but it all boils down to what kind of room the listener feels they're standing in." Not quite autobiographical, it's a record built on the long, unresolved tension between what changes and what doesn't.

Also included is a pulsating disco mix of Pinky Ann Rihal's 'Party Tonight' by Turbotito & Ragz, already spun by the likes of CC:DISCO and Barry Can't Swim. JKriv then twists RD Burman's 'Birth of Shiva' into a house stomper laced with bansuri and squelching bass, while Daniel T. transforms 'Zindagi To Zindagi Hai' into a dubbed-out Bollywood journey.

Review: Max Roach's Again is a compelling double LP capturing two of his finest live performances from 1960 and 1961, both of which spotlight the drummer's rhythmic brilliance and collaborative prowess. Side A features 'This Night Mountain' and 'Ceciliana' which highlight Roach's synergy with Tommy and Stanley Turrentine. Later, you find 'Who Will Buy?' with Abbey Lincoln's captivating vocals adding emotional depth and the album culminates with 'Stop Motion' on Side D, which is a testament to Roach's innovative percussion. With contributions from Clifford Jordan, Julian Priester and Coleridge Parkinson, Again stands as proof of Roach's trailblazing jazz artistry.

Review: Bassist and composer Joe Sanders shows he is unafraid to explore every side of his artistry with his new, genre-blurring album Parallels. It is a mix of live recordings with Seamus Blake, Logan Richardson and Gregory Hutchinson and dreamy, studio-crafted pieces with Jure Pukl and Taylor Eigsti that, between them, bridge signature East Coast grit and famous West Coast introspection. From intimate family moments to lush Italo-disco textures, Sanders threads his acoustic and electronic sensibilities into a cohesive overall listen that has plenty of fearless jazz exploration, deep groove and all-important emotional nuance. It is the sound of a musician at the height of his creative powers who is as curious as he is versatile.

Review: Two popular tracks from the highly rated and MURO-curated compilation Diggin Victor: Deep Into The Vaults Of Japanese Fusion / AOR are now made available for the first time on their own standout 7". Originally released as a limited item at an anniversary event, these rare gems are magically escapist sounds that blend library music, jazz, soul and Balearic mindsets into a pair of tropical heaters. The Kumi Sasak A-side is a real melodic noodler with meandering bass and a whimsical, carefree spirit as it heads nowhere in particular in hypnotic fashion. Side-B has 'Kimono' by Tetsuo Sakurai, which is a more rhythmic sound with funky bass riffs and 80s broken beats and a lush vocal.

Review: Recorded live at Copenhagen's Jazzhus Montmartre in 1963, Sahib Shihab's performance captures the moment when the saxophonist and flautist fully embraced both his roots in bop and his growing affinity for the avant-garde. Joined by an impressive cast of musicians, including flugelhornist Allan Botchinsky, guitarist Ole Molin, drummer Alex Riel, and the prodigious 17-year-old bassist Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen, the set unfolds with elegance and innovation. The opening '4070 Blues' is an exuberant, hard-bop driven piece, setting the tone with its intricate brass and rhythm section interplay. 'Charade' slows things down, bringing a contemplative, balladic feel, allowing Shihab's sax to shine. On side two, the ambitious 'Conversations' suite spans three parts, each delving into the complexities of improvisationirhythmic shifts and interplay between the musicians give the track a live energy that feels spontaneous yet controlled. This reissue, with audiophile-grade pressing, offers a fresh perspective on a key jazz moment.

Review: British-born soul artist Eki Shola, resident variously between the US and Japan, is said to have spent much of her creative career in "enforced isolation", and her music bears all the great hallmarks of a true artist. The most recent LP Kaeru is true to said assessment, reflecting Shola's long and enduring multi-instrumental, Eastern hemispherical instrumental interests: curiosities such as shakuhachi, shamisen, and Morin Khuur were incorporated into her already brilliant electronica soul salutations, representing leaps in both geography and sound. This new Oonops Drops issue brings two fresh new interpretations to follow 2023's LP, evincing the same good headspace that birthed the first.

Review: Geordie one-man production line Smoove's Multitrack Reworks series consistently delivers the goods, with the popular funk, soul, breaks and disco DJ/producer dropping fine, Reflex style revisions of both classic cuts and lesser-celebrated gems. He begins volume ten by reworking Steely Dan's 'Peg', a cut beloved of hip-hop DJs thanks to its killer drum-break and use in De La Soul's 'Eye Know'. His version makes great use of the multi-track stems, teasing out the break and slowly building the instrumental elements before unleashing the vocals. It's a genuinely great rework, as you'd expect. Over on the flip, he gives 'Baby Be Mine', with its' crispy drums, glistening disco guitars and squelchy synth-bass, a similar treatment, before successfully chopping up a heavy, percussion-laden deep AOR soul number ('This Time').

He hails from Augsburg, Germany, but taps into the golden era West Coast for this dusty and soul foray into hip-hop. 'Medusa' could well be a long-lost Dilla cut - as could many of these sketches, to be fair. Review: Helsinki-based sextet Soft Power return with their fourth release i a richly detailed and expansive jazz-rock record that confirms their standing as one of Finland's most original ensembles. Formed in 2015, the group continues to push forward with a sound rooted in Nordic jazz and progressive traditions, but always shaped by clarity, control and sharp melodic thinking. It's a new release that leans into modal harmony, rhythmic intricacy and instrumental colour, without ever tipping into excess. 'Zeppelin' unfurls with measured power, while the title track 'Space To Breathe' delivers a slow, immersive build full of harmonic subtlety and textural weight. Lush electric keys and layered horns give the record its warmth, while tight ensemble playing keeps the edges crisp. There's a sense of atmosphere here that's as important as any solo or theme i a carefully built tension between groove, abstraction and mood. Without falling into pastiche, the band channel the mysticism of 70s European fusion and reshape it for the present, offering a record that's cool, grounded and quietly complex. A standout addition to the Finnish jazz-rock catalogue and a clear sign that this group continues to grow with purpose.

Coming to in 2007, the duo fused Pavlov's raw digital landscapes and Christopherson's dark, whimsical touch, bringing a bold debut and stark break from convention, blending artificial vocals with live drums, jazz noir with tropical textures, and synthetic sounds. The boundaries of genre are brushed up against, with tracks like 'Dtorumi' and 'J3z' pushing the limits of post-90s electronic experimentation. Now, with the assistance of beat-maker Inflo, she's decided to strike out on her own via a quietly impressive solo debut that re-casts her as a genuinely fresh and exciting soul talent. Beginning with the layered acapella vocals and deep, jazzy grooves of stunning opener "One Love", the album sees her brilliantly deliver heartfelt and thoughtful lyrics over hazy backing tracks that brilliantly join the dots between jazz, neo-soul and R&B. While she's undoubtedly the star of the show, Inflo's stripped-back, partially acoustic and largely soft-focus production is also worthy of high praise.

It's one of their most focused records, recorded live with no overdubs, and it still hits hard. Tracks like 'Parasite' and 'People, People' feel especially relevant now, tackling inequality, media spin and class struggle with sharp lyrics and a driving sense of purpose. There's fire in the horns, urgency in the rhythm, but also a feeling of hope and collective strength. The band has offered plenty of highlights since, but Manifesto remains a standout i lean, direct and full of intent.

Written during a period of immersion in Krishna Consciousness and Dharma Yoga, the record filters Donadio's longstanding fascination with rhythm and repetition through a newly inward, psi attuned lens. Gone is the body music of his earlier output; these nine drift in and out of tempo, suspended in an unhindered, devotional murk. Lo-fi drum machinations ground various loop dissolutions and smear-structures, where things might otherwise lose themselves in an unfound pool of texture, this being true especially of the latter-record Charanjit Singh echo 'Singular Cobra' to the zooid drumming of 'Golden Firmament'.

Their cosmic jazz was again infused with funk, soul and electronic experimentation and was recorded during a wildly prolific stretch in New York. The newly reissued album feels both grounded in groove and untethered from reality. The slinky bounce of 'UFO,' the celestial drift of the title track and the kaleidoscopic sprawl of 'Seductive Fantasy' showcase Ra's expanding sonic vision in real time. As the musical world tilted toward disco and hip-hop, Sun Ra forged his own path by melding deep bass, astral synths and Afro-futurist chants into an otherworldly sound that still feels ahead of its time.

Review: Captured over two nights in August 1970, Sun Ra's landmark sets at Fondation Maeght mark his first performances outside North America and document one of the Arkestra's most potent live iterations. Set in a modern art gallery in southern France, the concerts land Ra, John Gilmore, Marshall Allen and co. amid a cross-disciplinary festival alongside Albert Ayler and LaMonte Young, and show the Arkestra in full visionary flight. 'Love In Outer Space' and 'Shadow World' blend ritual chant, sci-fi groove and volcanic improvisation, while 'Cosmic Explorer' and 'Spontaneous Simplicity' show the group folding modal jazz into galactic swing and freeform abstraction. Organ blasts, interstellar percussion, surreal monologues and projections of Egyptian gods and rockets made this a total work. Caux's recollections of stunned audiences match the recordings' scale: volatile yet tightly bound, cosmic but rooted in Black American avant-garde traditions. This new Strut edition spans four CDs and adds extensive liner notes and restored photos by Philippe Gras, pulling the Maeght nights from myth into focus. It's not a mere live document - more like a transmission, decoded decades later. If Ra was right that "space is the place," this is one of its clearest signals.

Review: The Swiss saxophonist delivers a mesmerising journey through modal jazz on his latest album. Drawing deep inspiration from John Coltrane, Torrent blends intricate harmonies with raw, unfiltered improvisation, crafting a collection that is both a tribute and an exploration of new sonic terrain. The album opens with 'Danse Tropical, a reflective and richly textured piece where Torrent's saxophone weaves through intricate scales, searching yet controlled. The steady rhythm section acts as an anchor, allowing the melodies to expand and evolve organically. In contrast, 'Quannassa' injects a restless intensity, shifting through complex harmonic movements while the quartet navigates its dynamic ebb and flow with effortless cohesion. The title track, 'Buleria', is perhaps the album's centerpieceian eight-minute odyssey that fuses modal jazz with flamenco's hypnotic rhythms. Torrent's improvisation feels deeply intuitive, soaring over a meditative backdrop that evokes the vast, open landscapes of Iberia. The interplay between the quartetipiano, bass and drumsiis both fluid and instinctive, fostering an environment where the saxophone can push beyond conventional boundaries. While deeply rooted in Coltrane's legacy, Buleria is far from a mere homage. Torrent and his ensemble use the foundations of modal jazz as a springboard for personal expression, creating a sound that is both reverent and adventurous. Each track unfolds like a conversationisometimes gentle, sometimes incendiary, but always searching for something beyond the ordinary.

Review: First released in 1971, Garra captures Brazillian legend Marcos Valle at his most playful and politically subversive i a sun-soaked record full of breezy melodics, cerebral arrangements and beneath-the-surface protest. Reissued by Spanish imprint Vampi Soul, it sounds as compellingly bittersweet as ever. Valle blends samba, soul and psychedelia into something smooth but quietly radical, with lyrics (penned by his brother Paulo Sergio) touching on everything from consumerism to cultural identity, often disguised as love songs. Tracks like 'Jesus Meu Rei' and 'Com Mais de 30' retain all their sonic charm and tropical levity, while 'Black Is Beautiful' stands out for its politicism as much as its poignancy. The arrangements are rich but never overly busy, balancing Rhodes keys, strings and rhythm with ample airiness. Garra is a magnificent reminder of how music, when done right, has the power to elevate discourse, challenge the establishment, and joyfully celebrate unity.

Co-produced by fellow giants of the Latin scene, Lincoln Olivetti and Paulo Sergio Valle, the record features a stellar lineup including Rosana, Robson Jorge and Oberdan Magalhaes and blends MPB, funk, soul and AOR influences from Valle's time spent in Los Angeles. US legend Leon Ware also get involved and makes a fine contribution and now this definitive reissue arrives with half-speed mastering to elevate the warmth and detail of the original recordings. This is one of Marcos Valle's most iconic works.

Review: Freestyle deliver a curate collection of overlooked UK street soul and boogie from the 80s and early 90s, with standout tracks from the label's recent 12" reissue programme. The collection houses a special mid-90s gem from Manchester's Gold In The Shade, with accompanying photos by Andrew Holligan and liners from Kevin Le Gendre. The sleeve was shot in Hackney, East London, where a vibrant street culture flourished despite the strictures of the Thatcher era. British music evolved at the same time, as larger ensembles shrank in favour of smaller groups with synths, letting boogie's smooth, bass-led sound find life. This transition, alongside the rise of street soul, budded and blossomed a uniquer blend of indie and studio projects, imprinting lastingly on the culture, now repackaged and again represented in The Way U Make Me Feel.

Review: The Iron Curtain, a politically charged term of the 20th century, symbolised the divide between East and West. Winston Churchill famously referenced this metaphor, describing how an "Iron Curtain" descended upon Europe, obscuring the actions behind it. This two-parter record from Jazzman does the impossible, lifting the curtain through sound alone, representing jazz's ablation of political and cultural barriers, as it flourished in Soviet states and exposed the contradictory histories of Soviet jazz, from the 1960s to the 80s. Despite Cold War tensions and MADs, the Soviets didn't hold their breath for a second, embracing the jazz modernisms of hard bop, modal, Latin jazz and Eastern folk-jazz. The resilience of jazz artists during an era of geopolitical conflict thus offers a sprightly affirmation of spirituality and formal reinvention, in the face of adversity.

Review: More than two decades away informed on this latest Totally Wired compilation: A New Collection From Acid Jazz, a fresh chapter in one of the label's most defining projects. Originally launched in 1988 by Eddie Piller and Gilles Peterson, the series captured the sound of the emerging acid jazz scene, then a tight-knit movement centred on forward-thinking club culture and rediscovered rarities. This latest instalment reflects a label in confident form, with new signings like Earth-O-Naut and Quiet Fire laying beside exclusive material from Matt Berry, Chris Bangs, and a rare Soul Revivers 45 featuring Kokoroko's Shiela Maurice-Grey and Anoushka Nanguy. Vintage highlights include the Acid Jazz Orchestra reinterpreting Corduroy and a floor-shaking take on 'Rock Steady' by The Brand New Heavies.

Review: A new compilation from Spiritual Jazz shows the genre's predisposition to thrive despite heavy political oppression, with underworld eminents euphonating their radical music despite a hard immuring behind the Iron Curtain, which represented the gash between East and West during the Cold War. Contemporary jazz and European folk collide on the first of a two-parter record here, reflecting muted but reassuring sonic utterances sounding against oppression, a somewhat unspeakable sentiment whipping across the Eastern Bloc of the 50s and 60s. Vagif Mustafa Zade, an Azerbaijani pianist, and the Manfred Ludwig Sextett, from the same era, are only two such featured artists; they helped push the embrace hard bop and modal, and the boundaries of what was permissible under the regime.

Review: Kalita returns with the third instalment of its Borga Revolution! series, continuing its deep dive into the sound of Burger Highlife, a genre born of traditional Ghanaian melodies, synths, drum machines, and disco groove-matics. Emerging in the 1980s during a time of great political turmoil, public strife and mass emigration, the style evolved as Ghanaian musicians abroad began blending their roots with the digital tools of their new homes. Volume 3 showcases rare and elusive cuts by the likes of Obibini Takyi, Osei Banahene, and Okyerema Asante, as well as keystone figures George Darko and Lee Dodou. The collection paints a fuller picture of a moment where innovation thrived in exile, and highlife was reshaped through transcontinental influence and technological experimentation.

Review: Northern Soul is a scene which had many legendary hits, and DJs back in the day would often go to great lengths to protect the name of artists and tunes they played in order to keep a competitive edge over their peers. That gatekeeper is long gone, fortunately, so now anyone can enjoy the best the genre had to offer. This bumper double compilation has done plenty of the hard work for you by compiling 42 more of the finest Northern Soul tracks and they are all must-haves, frankly. The classics flow freely from legends like Stevie Wonder, Dusty Springfield, Freda Payne, Robert Knight, The Supremes, Major Lance and the unforgettable Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell duet, 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough'. It's got all the energy, groove and soul you need to keep spinning all night long.
