Serato Fresh Air Control Vinyl (2 x 12 inch, clear vinyl)
Cat: 658047 Rel: 07 Aug 17

12" control vinyl pressing for Serato DJ & Scratch Live DJs using Serato’s NoiseMap Control Tone
Notes: A blazing hot release, just in time for Summer. Dam-Funk brings his A-game to this exclusive two-part Serato record.

Side A's title track sees a DJ Spinna collaboration swing into airy, G-funk-driven house music. While Side C's "Hittin" delivers a more laid back track with Dam's classic neck-snapping snares and grandiose guitar riffs.

The vinyl comes in crystal clear. Each track hits the ten(ish)-minute mark, ideal for the DJ-handover record. Jacket & labels feature stunning artwork by Freddy Anzures.

Tracklist:

Side A: "Fresh Air" feat DJ Spinna (9:12)
Side B: Serato Control Tone (15:00)

Side C: "Hittin" (10:32)

Review: The New York-based (U)nity is made up of Michael Valeanu, Axel Tosca Laugart, Chris Smith, Max Cudworth and Amaury Acosta. They formed the band in 2006 as a project to explore Afro-Cuban jazz, funk, soul and contemporary electronica. They say they've been influenced by everyone from Chucho Valdes to Art Blakey to Led Zeppelin to Kendrick Lamar, and you can definitely hear all of that in this jawdropping work. "Guarapachanga" is special in that it was the first song written by the band back in their days as music students at The New School. It's derived from the style known as guarapachangeo - the most advanced form of Cuban rumba, heavily improvisational and based on very complex rhythms and melodies. On this recording, (U)nity is graced with a guest performance by Grammy Award winner Pedrito Martinez, a master rumbero, one of the greatest conga players ever, an innovator who has left a permanent mark on Cuban music. Martinez is also a priest in the Yoruba religion and a historian of Cuban culture.

Over its eight and a half minutes, "Guarapachanga" twists and turns and journeys through a mind bending array of different tempos and modes, from Latin jazz to hip hop, ultimately ending with a trippy ambient soundscape. The whole thing is overlaid with free spirited melody, soul and the Afro-Cuban essence that is the band's lifeblood. The white-hot live playing gives it the feel of the best early-morning jam session, yet it packs a sonic punch that will make it sound incredible on a good sound system in the hands of adventurous DJs in the world-beat or spiritual-house vein. If you didn't know "Guarapachanga" was a contemporary work you might mistake it for a Loft classic; yet it's also as fresh and exciting as anything you'll hear this year.

  1. Shoot The Bar (7:46)
  2. Primary Colours (6:51)
  3. Oliva Funk (6:31)
Review: Florence based label Bosconi is back with 100 Hz aka UK legends Lee Renacre and James Chapman who have been around since the late eighties. This is their second release on the Italian imprint; their Mila EP was their first for the label back in 2009. On the A side we have a re-issue of their 1989 track "Shoot The Bar" a sturdy and cyclical house groove on the tougher side of things with a nice double bass holding the track above a tight rhythm and dreamy Rhodes piano. "Primary Colours" sounds more like minimal, but given more of an edge by all the dusty and lively analogue machines that power it along. Its bumpy bass and restrained synth stabs supporting some simplistic rhythms and works quite well. Finally "Oliva Funk" is more of a classic NYC house cut, those rapid fire cowbell strikes will help it bear even more resemblance to classic Kerri Chandler style vibes.

  4. Howl009.4 (8:08)
Review: The career rebirth of long-serving British duo 100Hz, whose fine debut 12" "Low Frequency Overload" dropped way back in 1989, continues apace. Following fine recent outing on Bosconi and Veniceberg they resurface on Howl. There's naturally much to admire, from the mildly foreboding electronics, swirling chords and rubbery drum machine beats of "Howl009.1" and vintage bleep-meets-Jaydee throb of "Howl009.2", to the bass-heavy, pitched-down weirdness of closer "Howl009.4". Arguably best of all, though, is the analogue positivity of "Howl009.3", where bright electric piano lines and Balearic synthesizer flourishes work in glorious union with ragged acid bass and a bustling, breakbeat house rhythm.

Review: Since making their name with the bleep/loved up deep house fusion of "Low Frequency Overload" back in 1990, British duo 100 Hz have continued to deliver occasional 12" singles. Their latest EP, Immersive, is full of rich, saucer-eyed deep house treats. Highlights include the darting, near Balearic synths and dream house style grooves of "Rio",the boompty-influenced cut and thrust of "Rub Tub (Edit)", where jammed-out jazz synths cluster around a killer funk bassline, and the ultra-deep, but suitably energetic "Whiskey Pineapple". This latter track is propelled forwards by a relentless bassline, crunchy drum machine percussion, and some foreboding melody lines.

  2. Parallel Strings (7:26)
  3. Altered Possibility (7:14)
Review: In our eyes, Patrice Scott's Sistrum Recordings represents everything that we like about deep house. That is not to say the label is limited at one single sound or genre, but it's more about its approach to finding the right artists to fit with its aesthetics. This latest head to head by the 12 To 30 trio - Bacanito, Giovanni Randisi and Tazz - is another stunning escapade into the deepest and most cerebral shades of house music, and the opener "Timed Reality" makes use of the genre only for its tempo, preferring instead to deliver a sublime wall of pads, airy synths and sci-fi effects. "Parallel Strings" reminds us of Theo Parrish in his mid-'2000s mode, but "Altered Possibility" is the real winner on here; a warm slice of SH 101 noise is just what we need for our low-end necessities.

  4. Lowtec - "Dat America" (6:48)
Review: Styrax's alphabetized Specials series reaches its fourth volume (or Styrax I / Styrax J to use the correct parlance) with four typically sumptuous examples of archival house. 154's delightfully fuzzy "Daze" opens proceedings, which will cause much misty eyed reminiscing for anyone who indulged in the 2004 Delsin released album Strike it first appeared on. Alongside it, Damon Lamar's luxuriously paced "Rising Sun" is borrowed from Tetrode Music, its intoxicating swirls of kaleidoscopic textures every bit as potent as when it first surfaced. The flipside tracks are naturally in a similar vein with some 2003 bounciness from Claro Intelecto complemented by "Dat America", Lowtec's 1999 jam for the Playhouse imprint.

Review: French producer 1977 aka Matsa, delivers a bold and subtle blending of ambient textures, deep pads and raw rhythms perfectly mixed with some minimal sequences. In Brief, a fine and complete piece of electronic music, made with constant attention to detail. Starting out with the hauntingly emotive ambience of "Tkg" where sub bass pulsations lurk between the crackling of surface noise, pitch shifted vocals and transcendental chilling pads, then the dusty and emotive deep house of "Soso" which is informed equally by Fred P as it is by the likes of Lawrence. On the flip, there's the rather Fred P sounding "Mondat" which is the highlight a smoothly emotive deep house number while "Toine" gets dubbier and subterranean in a way that UntilMyHeartStops fans will appreciate.

Here we have a remix EP of three of their cuts, the first in the form of a break-ridden deep house ride from Central Toast on "Peanut Butter & Jam", the second another break-heavy house experiment by Manmade Distanza on "Hoop Dreams", and finally a mesmeric sort of tribal house nugget by DJ Sports Emotional on "Baaam". Review: By their standards, Danish duo 2 Bit Crew enjoyed a very productive 2014, releasing well-received singles on Deso, Luvdancin' and their own self-titled imprint. Here they return to the latter with three more sumptuous chunks of tactile, arms-spread deepness. The untitled A-side arguably hits home hardest, with sweet, delay-laden loops and delicious riding a house tempo Motor City techno groove. The second track, nestled at the beginning of side B, seemingly shimmers with positive intent. The duo opts for Chez Damier style bass and a touch of vintage US house bump, while smothering the groove in darting synths and huggable electronics. Finally, the third track goes even deeper, delivering the dreamy tech-house equivalent of a long, sloppy kiss.

Review: Dublin based Major Problems is helmed by major retrovert and deep digger Compassion Crew; whose Compassion Cuts unearths more dormant classics for a well needed revival. He gave bleep techno anthem "Pressure Dub" by Ability II a well needed re-rub and now turns his deft hand at 2BMW 's 1990 classic "Don't Tell Me" (How Love Should Feel) by one Larry Rauson of Luxury Productions (The New Crew) fame. This was the one and only release on Life Of Luxury. Rauson is a founding member and producer for the independent label New Generation Records and has recorded with Tony Humphries and Louie Vega over the years. This deep and bittersweet jam is one of those perfect examples of the early '90s house zeitgeist by this underrated New Jersey producer. Also features "Love Dub" (Compassion Crew Re-rub) a lo-slung and bumpin DJ tool, in addition to Larry's Luxury mix of the same track featuring some truly sexy sax stylings.

First up, his 2AM/FM project with D'Marc Cantu with "Poison Dart" a gritty late night Berlin lazer-fest. They open up the Windows EP with the dreamy haze of "Clarity" before "Contour Lines" brings a pulsing, techy lead into the mixture of sweeping pads and snappy beats. "Someday" is a rich, harmonious ambient excursion, and then "It's A Sign" finishes the EP off with a truly meditative trip for the smoothest deep house cruisers to lock onto.

Review: "I Choose You" was initially featured on Foreign Land, the debut album from gospel-soul trio 3 Winans Brothers. Two years on, Louie Vega has decided to give it the remix treatment, serving up four versions across two slabs of wax. He begins with the Dance Ritual Mix, where the trio's smooth vocals - and the impassioned backing singing of Karen Clarke Sheard - ride a shuffling, Latin-influenced house groove. The Mid Tempo Mix offers a musically richer, groovier interpretation, while the Dub focuses more on Clarke Sheard's diva style vocalizing, jazzy piano solos, and Vega's tasty, floor-friendly beats. Speaking of solos, the Masters of Work man cannily brings them to the fore on the closing Axel Solo Mid Tempo Mix.

Their "Dance" tune features The Clark Sisters on backing vocals and is herein remixed twice by Vega: the first is the "dance ritual mix", a soulful house cut with an r&b twist, while the "latin soul mix" focusses more heavily on the house beats and it's a more typical Vega tune which could feature in a typical Vega set, rotary mixer and all!

Review: German imprint Quintessentials' mission statement is to keep underground house music on the map. It claims to hold a candle to those old house records: they love that raw yet soulful vibe. For their 56th (!) release they have tapped Mexican producer 4004, who has had releases also of late on FACES, Poetry In Motion and Late Night Jackin'. Smoky late night groove "No Dreams" gets things off to a good start with its smooth Rhodes, bumpy bassline and hypnotic bongo action. We particularly enjoyed the pumping NYC basement vibe of B side cut "Fanta Club" while "Black Alley Shuffle" gets back to the program in sexy and dusky fashion complete with some dusty rhythms, diva vocals and further mood lighting with the impressive use of filter sweeps.

Review: While they may have mined many of their classic early releases, it's taken until now for the resurgent Vibraphone crew to return to their very first offering form way back in 1992. 49th Floor was a pseudonym of Stefano Curti, one of the mainstays of the label, and Night Passage was the classic record that started it all off. The whole EP has been given the remastering treatment and sounds fresher than ever, with "Fast City" in particular shining bright with its urgent swing, luscious bassline and sprightly keys. This is house music in its purest form, often imitated but never replicated.

Review: There's a lot to be said for club music that aims to both soothe the senses and move the feet. We can think of few better examples than "Some Song Teachers", the title track from this Public Possession collaboration between Cos/Mes member 5ive and label-hopping Swede Samo DJ. While underpinned by a sturdy, tactile rhythm track, it's the blissful electronics and undulating, rising and falling synthesizer melodies - new age influenced, but also intensely positive and mood-enhancing - that make the track so addictive. Flipside "Dilemma" is similarly smile inducing, offering a tasty twist on melodious, dusty deep house. It's nowhere near as striking as its' predecessor, but it's still a very fine track indeed.

This single is a vessel for the various sides of Tommi Vicari Jr, who rolls out his Czevski alias to deliver a bruising remix of "57 Hertz" by 76-79. It's a reverb-soaked, dubbed out affair with a rock solid rhythm section and plenty of trippy FX tweaking on top. On the flip it's a different story with a similar feeling as we get the straight up Tommi Vicari Jr material in the shape of two killer tracks crafted for transcendental moments of dancefloor hypnosis.

They are well known for their 90's discography which was full of hits on the likes of Strictly Rhythm, King Street Sounds and Slip 'N Slide, including collaborations with Crystal Waters and Sabrynaah Pope. "Let Yourself Go' was originally released in 1995 and probably one of the best moments of their activity in the house music scene. The jacking and swing fuelled vocal house of "Let Yourself Go" (Penn Ave mix) is a real zeitgeist of stateside house music of the mid noughties. Equally memorable were the dark and tribal drums of "Capitol mix" (reminiscent of classic Cevin Fisher) or the deeper and sexier garage vibe of the "Georgetown mix".

Review: Monsieur Cedric's Serie Limited is back with some sexy house with a French touch, this time courtesy of Osaka based producer and DJ 99Letters who takes a break from releasing on his eponymous imprint. It is sombre and emotive deepness on offer here with dusty and smoky elements supported by glacial pads on the A side. On the flip things get a bit more hectic such as on the wild acid techno thump of "Bass Raw Bass (Monsieur Cedric Rave mix)" which is reminiscent of early nineties UK rave vibes but the Steve Frisco remix of "Fruity Mango" is an angular and disjointed remake with broken, rusty drum patterns soon getting a hip-hop groove happening behind its messy but captivating collage of samples.

There's no indication of who is behind A Houseband or Russian Hackers, but both of them have done a damn fine job of bringing two sure fire killers to wax. The first is "Another Love Another Happiness", which as the title candidly suggests is yet another version of the oft-sampled "Love & Happiness", this time framed in a bubbling, dubby deep house context for the mellow heads to soak up. Cat: A1B 001. Rel: 11 Jul 16
  1. Broken (7:04)
  2. Edits 1 (7:41)
  3. Scars (5:45)
  4. Wind Me (6:47)
Review: Previously known as A1 Bassline and, more recently, Laszlo Dancehall with Leon Vynehall, A1B sets up his own stall with a clutch of heads-down deep-focused house jams. "Broken" shuffles with a warm air that could have easily come from MAW's studios 20 years ago "Edits" is a straight-up drum track with full focus on mix creativity while "Scars" takes a clipped Detroitian-flavoured hook and lays it over a rolling b-boy breakbeat. Finally "Wind Me" closes the show on a more introspective flex with tones that are reminiscent of Ame 10 years ago and a lolloping percussive arrangement that ensures full physical participation.

Midnight Riot Volume 9
  1. Aashton - "Pride" (6:13)
  2. Peza - "Black Gold" (6:23)
  3. Fabiolous Barker - "The Paradise" (6:37)
  4. Rayko - "The Jam" (5:55)
Review: Yam Who?'s Midnight Riot is back with another volume of funky, party starting edits, so come and get your fix. Aashton's "Pride" samples the diva vocals of you know who on this smooth and soulful number. Peza's "Black Gold" is pure classic disco, reminiscent of Salsoul, possibly? Fabiolous Barker's "The Paradise" has that retro and Balearic vibe that fans of labels like Love On The Rocks and Efficient Space will certainly dig. "The Jam" by Rayko is a re-edit of you guessed it: Technotronic's "Pump Up The Jam".
