The Ray Mang Remixes
Cat: ZEDD 12391. Rel: 10 Dec 24
It's Got To Be Love (Ray Mang remix) (7:56)
Tradewinds (Ray Mang remix) (7:12)
K-Jee (Ray Mang remix) (8:05)
Review: Three standout tracks from Dave Lee's 2023 album Metamorphosis - which he dropped under his AC Soul Symphony alias - now get pulled apart and reworked by the one and only Dub-disco king Ray Mang. First comes 'It's Got To Be Love' with its super funky and bubbly bass and lush string elegance, then he flips 'Tradewinds' into a deeper, still lush and lavish instrumental disco gem that is seductive and warm for the winter months. Last but not least, 'K-Jee' brings an infectious groove to the dance floor with a little more percussive energy and upbeat bounce - but again swooning strings are the icing on the cake. All three of these are classy and sophisticated reworks from the one and only Mang.

Track 3 (3:59)
Track 4 (5:13)
Track 5 (4:24)
Review: Whether or not Almacks is named after the word that was given to several social clubs in London between the 18th and 20th centuries or not we do not know, but people in those clubs might well have enjoyed getting down to the artist's beats. These new five cuts are all unnamed but all perfect blends of funk, soul, deep house and great samples. Those vocal chops lend lots of r&b loveliness and romance to the dusty, low-slung beats, hip-hop-inspired beats and middle grooves. There is also a bit of broken beat and Afro influencer later on. A heartwarming EP.

Review: This release sees Anane's soulful vocals take centre stage, reimagining the classic house anthem through a series of captivating remixes. Dimitri From Paris delivers two irresistible cuts, his club mix a vibrant and energetic journey through classic house sounds, while his dub strips things back to a hypnotic groove. Giv Me Luv (5:46)
Giv Me Luv (Detroit mix) (5:46)
Review: Regular collaborators Biesmans and Johannes Albert tend to release at least one record a year together. 2024's 'Give Me Luv', is one of their most accessible and entertaining to date. It has already become a feature of club sets thanks to a digital release earlier in the year and has finally landed on wax. In its original form (side A), the track offers a delicious blend of snappy Chicago house percussion, undulating analogue bass, glassy-eyed chords and colourful nu-disco synths - all topped off with a superb part spoken, part sung vocal from the undisputed "voice of house" Robert Owens. Over on the flip they charge headlong into techno territory on the harder, darker, faster and undeniably bigger 'Detroit Mix'.

Downtown King Kunta (3:40)
Billie's Milkshake (3:28)
Review: Kendrick Lamar's 'King Kunta' and Kelis' 'Milkshake' hear an unlikely pairing on the perfunctorily named Edits series. The former track - some might agree its dust is still settling, as it was released in 2015 - sounds almost twice as lively here, its "oh, yes, you can, oh, yes you can!" ad-lib sounding about as squeezed as a hand-wrung lime steeped in its own juices and then dried out in Saharan heat. There's a diatonic, electric piano hook added on top too; Kelis' flip has a similar feel, mashing up the noughts teaser hit with a dash of easily identified r&b goodness - we're 99% sure you'll recognise the instrumental, its having also originated somewhere in the familiar fires of pop musical preeminence.

Rave Baby (6:43)
I Warned You Baby (6:55)
What's Poppin' (7:05)
Review: Cinthie Christl continues her successful partnership with Aus Music, this time giving birth to 'Rave Baby' - a bouncing and gurning (but not bawling) tribute to the skittish, breakbeat-powered hedonism of turn-of-the-90s UK house packed to the rafters with crunchy breaks, stabbing bass, fizzing electronics, gargantuan riffs and all manner of familiar rave-era samples. She reverts to her more familiar garage-house-inspired deep house sound on 'I Warned You Baby', where skippy beats and gorgeous piano riffs dominate the mix, before rounding off the EP with the slightly heavier, fuzzier and more percussive 'What's Poppin', which sounds like a tribute to the rave-era production work of Roger Sanchez and the big-room friendly madness of mid 1990s Junior Vasquez cuts.

Feel The Groove

Feel The Groove (Boogie Down mix) (6:43)
Get It Right (feat Karima Dai) (6:05)
My Groove (7:56)
Work Me (6:06)
Review: Marc Cotterell's 'Feel The Groove' EP is a vibrant, disco-infused collection that merges classic grooves with modern production. The title track, 'Feel The Groove', is a light, fun disco gem, capturing a funky 70s mood with a fresh UK garage twist and that xylophone magic touch. 'Get It Right' takes the funk further, building up to a filtered disco crescendo that's perfect for late-night floors, oozing with energy and sleek edits. On the flip side, 'My Groove' offers a deeper vibe, giving the EP a well-rounded feel with its rich bassline and smooth production. Finally, 'Work Me' is catchy and playful, bringing a polished sound that keeps the rhythm flowing. Altogether, 'Feel The Groove' is a solid pick for those craving both nostalgic and modern dancefloor moments.

King Street Sounds Sampler Vol 2

Rain: A Lil Louis Painting - "Give It Up" (Masters At Work club mix)
Mood II Swing - "Sunlight In My Eyes"
Kimara Lovelace - "Misery" (Lil Louis club mix)
Review: Now under new ownership (international dance music powerhouse Armada Music, fact fans), long-serving New York house imprint King Street Sounds is doing a good job in showcasing gems from its vast archives. This second label sampler contains four more genuine must-have cuts. First up, there's a chance to admire the deep, soulful house wonder that is Dennis Ferrer's 2008 hook-up with honeyed vocalist K.T. Brooks, 'How Do I Let Go'. It's followed by Masters at Work's deliciously loose, disco-influenced deep house revision of 'Give It Up' by Lil' Louis' Rain project (first released in 2000), Mood II Swing's DIY Soundsystem favourite 'Sunlight In My Eyes' (easily one of the greatest deep house jams of all time) and Lil' Louis's swinging garage-house rub of Kimra Lovelace's 'Misery'.

Galactic Snackbar (7:12)
Frisko Heaven (5:52)
Review: Swirl People revisit their roots with a nostalgic four track EP from their early days as Fortune Cookie. This collection - which is their third release on L.I.T.S. - features carefully selected tracks from their original 1996 releases on Marguerite, a small label run by a friend. Nearly three decades later, these still much sought-after tracks are finally being reissued. The EP opens with 'Glitter Girls,' which is characterised by a catchy bassline, followed by the deep groove of 'Um Bongo.' On the B-side, 'Galactic Snackbar' offers a retro-futuristic feel, while 'Frisko Heaven' wraps up the EP with classic disco-filtered house energy. Timeless tackle, for sure.

Freed From Desire (2024 version) (3:33)
Freed From Desire (Diplo extended mix) (4:29)
Review: Gala's iconic dancefloor hit resurfaces with a sharp, modern edge, proving that true anthems never fade. Nearly three decades after its debut, the 2024 version injects the track with fresh energy, weaving crisp electronic textures into the unmistakable melody that first captured hearts in the 90s. There is a balance of nostalgia and reinvention that amplifies the hypnotic chant we all know, providing an infectious rhythm with new layers that feel built for contemporary club sound systems. What's remarkable is how the essence of the original remains untouchediits euphoric pulse still as irresistible as it was on its first spin. It's a celebration of a track that continues to unite generations on the dancefloor.

Disco's Revenge (Mole Hole dirty mix) (6:23)
Disco's Revenge (David Anthony UK Full vocal mix) (6:30)
Disco's Revenge (Freemasons club mix) (8:20)
Review: Reissued on blue 12" vinyl comes a delightfully kooky slice of mashup/Latin house from (friends of) Gusto aka. Edward Greene, who first released 'Disco's Revenge' in 1996 through Dig It International, in what was sure to become a hugely well-received Latin house classic. Said to have been remixed at least 50 times over the course of its existence - and then covered, rerubbed, and even acoustic-versioned some more - we now hear just a select three versions of the track by Mole Hole, David Anthony, and Freemasons. All their remixes shed implicit light on what exactly it was about 'Disco's Revenge' that ignited the collective reinterpretive of the Bronx house scene at the time. Perhaps it was the track's "bom, bom, bom" vocals, its bombastically brassy "keep on moving" churns, its cheer band trombones and American football grunts that came together to touch such a vital motivational cord.

Images Fantomes (6:02)
Review: French producer Jehan is next up on Blur Records with a new EP, TV Screen, that shows that he has a sophisticated approach when it comes to bending free jazz with electronic music and a love of hip-hop. The latter of those is evident in the title of the opener, '92 Till Infinity', which pairs lazy keys with lazier beats and soul drenched vocals. 'Montre Suisse' (feat Donnie Moustaki) has dusty beats that sound like they might fall over themselves topped with warm organ chords and 'You Win' (feat Scruscru & Meowsn) then brings a sweet and swaggering deep house vibe. The flip keeps the slow burning and late night feelings alive with a trio of loved up, well sampled, blissed out beats.

Review: A momentous move from neon-soaked electro outfit Justice hears them team up with the like-minded thrower-backers Tame Impala for a "why didn't anyone think of this before?" EP, 'Neverender'. Released hot off the plate of a recent Alexandra Palace show, the just duo are heard to tip the lady's scales towards miscarriage, following their last LP Hyperdrama with a single tort of regret. Kevin Parker's unmistakable countertenor floats above the track's nightridden house mix like a beamer trailing its driver's emotions in its exhaust fumes: "Because I remember / The hardest of times I / don't forget / Neverender." An ode to "can't unsee", it also comes backed by remixes by Kaytranada and Rampa.

Maur Vs Dave Spoon - "At Night" (5:31)
Dave Spoon - "At Night" (7:58)
Review: Toolroom reissue a 2006 classic. Hailing from the original Toolroom "family" era in which Dave Spoon (Shadow Child), Funkagenda, D. Ramirez and Mark Knight are said to have ruled the roost, 'At Night' came not only at a prescient time, but also stood the test of time, in that it was - given the genre it works in and effectively predicts - well ahead of its time. The track blends a flicking, crossrhythmic main-room club lead with ostentatious risers and an arch minimality, fitting well in amongst the modish electro-house of the time, yet efflorescing a moodiness that would not catch on until 2010. Maur's "vs" rerub helps shed light on the way the track may be popularly received / perceived now.

Stereo Love (Mia Martina extended remix) (5:26)
Review: Way back in 2008, Romanian dance-pop producer Edward Maya scored a global hit with Vika Jigulina hook-up 'Stereo Love' - a slick, hooky song (complete with obligatory noughties auto-tune vocal effects) wrapped in jaunty, turbo-folk influenced accordion motifs and various nods to the EDM end of the house music spectrum. This reissue boasts three versions first released in the late noughties - the superior extended mix, radio edit and Moella's tougher, tribal house-tinged interpretation - and what appears to be a previously unreleased Mia Martina 'extended remix'. That boasts some swirly effects and slightly chunkier beats, but otherwise sticks closely to Maya's chart-bothering original mix.

That's what happens here with a new [air of remixes on a hand-stamped 12". 'Off The Wall' is first with all the original events such as the funky bassline and sweet falsetto vocal in place while shuffling, house-leaning drums are layered in for a little extra grooviness. Volume five in the series arrives with four more tried-and-tested workouts and little in the way of forgettable filler. His innovative sound with its rhythmic cut-and-paste vocal samples, rubbery basslines and slapping percussion set him apart and in 1994, as The Sample Choir, he released this fine EP on Nervous Records. Review: For the latest volume in Running Back's 'Double Copy' reissue series, label chief Gerd Janson takes us back to 1993 and the debut single from Justus Koehnke's Whirlpool productions collective - a double A-side affair inspired by contemporaneous house sounds from NYC and NJ. On the A you get three takes of the Mel Terme-voiced 'Fli Hi' - the classy garage-house vibes of the crew's original mix, their Tony Humphries-inspired 'Zanzibar Mix' (arguably even better than the main mix) and a darker, chunkier and more percussive rework by then Strictly Rhythm star George Morel. Over on the flip, we get the breezier, piano-powered, Victor Simonelli-esque 'Gimme (Original Mix)', the band's own acid-powered, dancefloor dub style 'Gimme Shelter Mix' and a superb new breakbeat-driven take by long-time fan David Moufang AKA Move D.

Superstitious (House remix) (8:00)
Review: There seems to be a richness of cultured new edits dripping at the start of this New Year. This 12" is proof of that and it finds the great Motown legend Stevie Wonder have his impeccable sounds just subtly tweaked to give them a little extra heft on modern sound systems. 'Do I Do' (House remix) kicks off here with nice disco loops and funky drum patterns that come alive with some steamy sax energies. The timeless 'Superstitious' then gets beefed up with some echo on the majestic synths and more weight in the drums. It's fun and funky perfection.

Review: Wonder by name, wonderful by nature. Man like Stevie has cooked up countless irresistible jams and so many of them are perfect for club-ready edits. That's what we have here as one of his most upbeat and feel-good jams, 'If You Really Loved Me,' gets a tweak with some modern flair. The drums are flipped into rolling and soulful house beats while the joyous vocals and horn stabs remain in place. 'I Wish' then has a more peak time feel with a blend of disco synths and lively vocal ad-libs, while 'In My Mind' is a nice laid-back and blissed-out number for cosy sessions.

Review: Classic House is a collaboration between legendary Radio 1 tastemaker and dance music uncle DJ Pete Tong, conductor Jules Buckley and The Heritage Orchestra. They have toured the country offering orchestral renditions of legendary dance hits and shows have proven hugely popular Seth older ravers who like to hear the classics that remind of their youth, bt also need to be in bed by 11pm. Originally released back in 2016, the album achieved immediate success and reached number one on the UK Albums Chart, which was in fact Tong's first chart-topping album. It features orchestral versions of iconic tracks like Faithless' 'Insomnia' The Shapeshifters' 'Lola's Theme, 'and Energy 52's 'Cafe Del Mar' with guest performances by vocalists such as Cookie, Katy B, Ella Eyre, John Newman, and Jamie Principle. This repress comes on lime green vinyl.

Review: Cyril's debut album offers a compelling fusion of house and UK garage, underscored by his distinctive Australian flair. Collaborations with artists like Kita Alexander on 'True' and Dean Lewis on 'Fall At Your Feet' infuse the tracks with emotive vocals, enhancing the rhythmic foundations. The inclusion of extended versions of 'Stumblin' In' and 'The Sound of Silence' showcases Cyril's adeptness at reimagining classics, breathing new life into them. Cyril's versatility is remarkable here, solidifying his position in the contemporary electronic music scene.

Review: The first notes of Strength In Numbers pull you in with the immediacy of a tightly wound groove. 'Team Spirit' sets the stage with sharp percussion and a bassline that feels as if it's pushing against a restraint, only to give way to an effortless swing. 'Gear Up Rudi!' follows with a cool, almost cinematic feel, as Gibin's intricate rhythm patterns dance around the space between the beats. The pace slows slightly on 'Come Mornin' (featuring Sandra St. Victor),' where the warmth of her vocals transforms the track into a soulful, melodic anchor. Yet, it's on 'No Matter What' that the LP really finds its strideian undulating groove, building steadily before its final, emotive release. The album balances thoughtful restraint with moments of release and in that, Gibin creates something that moves through time without losing its pulse.

Review: In Colour is of course the long awaited debut solo album from The xx's in-house knob twiddler Jamie 'xx' Smith, arriving through regular home Young Turks backed with a whole host of guest appearances. The more obsessive Jamie xx fans out there (of which we wager there are many) will no doubt already have burned out their laptops and retinas basking in the all too colourful pre-release streams of In Colour, but it's always nice to grip an album in your hands. The eleven tracks on In Colours come across like a low key ode to the rave from Jamie and pals, with Four Tet, Romy & Oli xx, Young Thug and Popcaan featuring, and yes there is also plenty of steel pan. "Hold Tight", which sounds like Jamie's attempt at forest techno, is a definite highlight!

Review: LSD’s Remixes EP channels the group’s genre-blurring ethos into a collection that thrives on reinvention. Lil Wayne’s charged verse on ‘Genius’ adds grit without overshadowing the original’s playful intensity. MK’s remix of ‘Thunderclouds’ transforms its soaring vocals into a deep house anthem, all pulsing bass and late-night allure. Banx & Ranx’s reggae-infused take on ‘Genius’ radiates sun-soaked warmth, while Dombresky’s remix of ‘No New Friends’ packs a punch with relentless house energy. CID’s rework of ‘Audio’ dials up crisp, percussive beats that slice through its melodic core. Meanwhile, The Aston Shuffle injects ‘Heaven Can Wait’ with shimmering synth layers, balancing nostalgia with dancefloor readiness. Lost Frequencies’ remix of ‘Thunderclouds’ closes the record on a euphoric high, reframing its introspection with bright, festival-ready optimism. This is LSD’s universe expanded — familiar yet thrillingly unpredictable.

Review: On reissued orange vinyl comes the debut set of sonic missives from house and easy listening via trip-hop heartthrobs Lighthouse Family; a miraculous birth for the duo of Tunde Baiyewu and Paul Tucker. This resplendent 1995 LP lay bare the pop dance musical sensibility of the time; string hit samples, synth funk basses, and a dark mode, prescient of the the leather-jacketed cool that would later peak on release of the first Matrix film. The code of cinematic chic is palpable here; songs that would otherwise qualify only as sparsely punctuated, pop lounge-funk come heavily tempered and assoiled by trilling, massive-attacked string backings ('Let It All Change', for example), producing a thrower-backer but still a classic record.

It's been five years since Timm's last outing under the alias though, making this expansive triple-pack of club cuts a genuinely notable release. Typically, it's a special collection of cuts too, with highlights including the sun-splashed gorgeousness of title track 'Disco Fantasy', the stripped-back drum machine jam 'Who Ist Die Eins', the suspenseful, tease-and-release brilliance of 'Give Me A C', the deep disco-house hypnotism of 'Off The Rack', the funky bassline-driven headiness of 'Just Stop It' and the string-drenched excitement of 'Pussycat Pool'.

Here they deliver the label's official 'best of' selection for 2024, an album-length excursion with seven sizzling tracks on offer. This flavourful mix reflects the label's ethos by offering a balanced blend of classic house, funky tracks with vocoders, minimal grooves and downtempo funk.
