Bryllyant (12" Nachpressung)
Cat: DE 101. Rel: 17 Jan 19
  1. Bryllyant (33 1/3 Plus 8 remix) (5:28)
  2. Trigger Track (1984 12" edit) (5:59)
  3. Bryllyant (US remix) (5:06)
  4. You (extended version) (7:12)
Review: As per usual, those fiendish folks over at Dark Entries have amazed us once again with yet another barrel of 1980s gold from the depths of the underground. This time it's German new wave band Boytronic who see a reissue, and the EP in question is 1988's "Byllyant", which features the magnificent Plus 8 mix - a shot to the head made up of warm bass tones and hard-hitting drum machine patterns - and also the US mix, which literally sounds like it was made yesterday; for being an '80s EP, Boytronic steered well clear of cheesy and to be honest, they give New Order a proper run for their money. The 1984 mix of "Trigger Track" is a wonderful electro stormer, stamping its fast beats over eerie pads and growling basslines. This would be silly not to recommend! For the diggers.

Heavens In The Back Seat Of My Cadillac (12" Nachpressung) (1 per customer)
Cat: FDO 002. Rel: 17 Jan 19
  1. Hot Chocolate - "Heavens In The Back Seat Of My Cadillac" (The Revenge edit) (7:23)
  2. Gwen McRae - "Keep The Fire Burnin" (The Revenge edit) (7:46)
Review: Second time around for The Revenge's brilliant re-edit of Hot Chocolate's "Heaven's In The Backseat of My Cadillac", which has become something of an in-demand item in the decade that has passed since its initial release on Jiscomusic. It remains one of the finest reworks of the modern era: a mid-tempo, sing-along stomper that's guaranteed to rock the party every time it's wheeled out. On the B-side you'll find something even more rare: the Scottish producer's never-before-properly-released (and much sought-after) take on Gwen McRae's "Keep The Fire Burning". This naturally retains all of the key ingredients of the classic original version, adding a rolling house beat and some suitably saucer-eyed chords to make an already loved-up cut even more seductive.

Trouble In My Way (12" Nachpressung)
Cat: GAMM 127. Rel: 16 Jan 19
  1. Trouble In My Way (Afshin & Kiss My Black Jazz edit) (7:42)
  2. The Riot (Afshin & Kiss My Black Jazz edit) (6:00)
Review: Something a little different from G.A.M.M here, as Parisian DJ Afshin joins forces with the mysterious Kiss My Black Jazz to offer up two incendiary edits. The real surprise killer is A-side "Trouble In My Way", which subtly turns a blues-era recording of a traditional slave sing-along into a handclap-heavy chunk of infectious gospel-house brilliance. It takes a little time to build up, but when the heavier beats drop midway through you'll have dancers eating out of the palm of your hand. Flipside "The Riot" sees them make merry with a Hammond-heavy chunk of 1960s jazz-funk, extending and reworking the cut to make it suitably sweaty, heavy and life affirming.

  1. I Got Troubles (5:30)
  2. Oh Oui, Plus Fort (5:08)
  3. Is There Any Love? (5:55)
  4. Song For Lea (6:06)
Review: The first installment in Holdtight's "Hot and Spicy" re-edits series simply flew off the shelves, and we're expecting this speedy follow-up to sell strongly, too. Certainly, there's much to admire throughout, from the dewy-eyed, life-affirming sweetness of subtle danceflooor soul re-rub "I Got Troubles", to the intergalactic slap-bass, "Miami Vice" chords, bustling drum machine beats and wayward synths of sleazy EP closer "Song For Lea". In between, you'll find the loopy, head-nodding blue-eyed soul chug of "Is There Any Love?" and the camp, tongue-in-cheek, sax-laden disco sleaze of "Oh Oui, Plus Fort".

Tropical Disco Records Vol 7 (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: TDISCO 007. Rel: 16 Jan 19
  1. Moodena - "What Da Funk" (6:14)
  2. Moodena - "The Horns" (6:13)
  3. Sammy Deuce - "Smack My Strings Up" (7:11)
  4. Sartorial - "Little Love" (6:29)
Review: By now we should all know what to expect from the Tropical Disco Records collective: namely respectable floor-friendly re-edits underpinned by chunky house drums. Moodena handles the A-side, first tidying up and beefing up a disco-funk jam rich in life-affirming piano solos ("What Da Funk"), before reaching for the filter sweeps on the trumpet, trombone and saxophone-laden Brazilian disco flex of "The Horns". Over on side B, Sammy Deuce dons his hot pants for a cheery romp through string-laden disco-house territory ("Smack My Strings Up") before Sartorial rounds things off with his filter disco house edit on the infectious rolling, peak-time friendly romp that is "Little Love".

  4. Duane PaleUmami Dance - "Give Tony A Slice" (5:12)
Review: Four talented chefs join forces and present the first volume of Amuse-Bouche, served courtesy of new label Take Away - based out of sunny Los Angeles. The label proudly states that it delivers music for your breakfast, lunch and dinner. On the A side we have the hyperspeed disco tool "Umami Dance" by Lamia Tobira, followed by the sweet edit of an underground goodie by Edith Folky named "Cognac Cookery". On the flip, get your groove on with the funked-up "Have You Seen Al?" by Karol Themsel before dessert is served by Duane Pale's wicked B side dub "Give Tony A Slice". Take notice, this is not a one-man show, together all four erase the distinction between sweet and savoury.

Review: More from Studio Mule's must-check "Midnight In Tokyo" series, which gathers together obscure gems from the Japan that "sound best listened to at night". While the previous volume largely focused on forgotten Japanese jazz-funk, this edition is more eclectic in tone, variously touching on rare groove, new wave, soul and disco. It's another belting selection, all told, with highlights including the breathy sleaziness of Yoko Hatanaka's "More Sexy", the post-punk boogie eccentricity of Mari Kaneko's "Get To Paradise", the sprightly synth-funk of "Sunshine Bright On Me" by Kangaroo and the synth-rock silliness of The Fad's wonderfully over-the-top "Singing Lady".

I'm Moving To Berlin (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: CDA 027. Rel: 14 Jan 19
  1. I'm Moving To Berlin
  2. Sexual Intruder Alert
  3. Approach & Identify
Review: Through his glittering catalogue for Public Possession, Bell Towers has proven himself to be a leading light in contemporary house that packs personality and class to match its club dynamics. His irreverent humour comes out in droves on "I'm Moving To Berlin", which thumps with the '80s-tinged energy he does so well. "Sexual Intruder Alert" actually sees the BT sound edge a little more towards techno, perhaps appropriate given the subject matter of the EP, and then "Approach & Identify" takes things in a tense, sleazy direction that jacks with a rawness you could imagine Ron Hardy going absolutely apeshit for.

Don't Leave Me Now (limited 12")
Cat: BST X050. Rel: 14 Jan 19
  1. Don't Leave Me Now
  2. Don't Leave Me Now (instrumental)
Review: Block Sistem is yet another curious entity from the labyrinthe archives of Italo disco. Originally released in 1983 on Rabbit Records, this gorgeous, richly produced slice of synthesizer acrobatics was a certifiable hit back in the day. As such, it's been fetching monstrous prices on the second hand market, but once again diggers can rejoice thanks to Best Record, who have done the right thing and dusted this rare gem down for a shimmering new 2019 release. In true Best style they've kept the sanctity of the original record intact, with a vocal mix on the A side and the instrumental on the B side, but this time around there's some utterly fresh artwork adorning the release. Not one to miss!

  1. At The Disco (3:46)
  2. Disco Bunny (Megamix) (3:39)
Review: Beard-strokers look away now, everyone else hit the dancefloor... Cannon & Mirrorball have just unleashed two very witty pieces on Disco Bits. As the name suggests, these anonymous editors are having some serious fun on both sides as they laced together two slews of tracks and make them sound like they should have always existed in bed together. "At The Disco" swoons with a sultry, mirrorball twinkle while "Disco Bunny" fires all over the place like a loose cannon. Both include so many references we reckon if you took a shot every time you heard a sample you recognise you'd be drunk within 30 seconds. Brilliant fun.

Cat: DFV 009. Rel: 14 Jan 19
  1. Afro Vibrations
  2. Shiny Stockings
  3. Tropical
  4. I Was Never Fan Of Sampling
Review: Last year was a massive one for Serbian label Disco Fruit, with a plethora of essential 12"s dropping amidst a productive digital schedule too. Mexican producer Hotmood was certainly part of the label's success, and he kicks things off in 2019 for them in fine style with this sizzling EP of good time vibes, leading in with the sultry, chugging funk of "Afro Vibrations". "Shiny Stockings" is a more insistent, looped up affair for peak time moments, while "Tropical" lives up to its name with an exotic lilt in its source material that will transport you to whichever sunkissed idyll your heart desires. The ironically titled "I Was Never Fan Of Sampling" rounds the record out with another blast of cannily sliced and diced disco funk goodness to satisfy every kind of dancer.

  4. Shit Hot Soundsystem - "Shit Goes 2 Minneapolis" (8:02)
Review: Burgeoning Italian imprint Samosa quite literally kick off a new year with purpose as they launch this exciting new V/A EP series "Funk Purpose". Onside are a motley collective of allied editors who dig deep, far and wide for these four party essentials. Lego Edit instantly gets fruity with his Faze O style hazy organs and loose guitar loop, C Da Afro gets super freaky on the chugged out early 80s funk fire "The Disco Freak" while Will Hofbauer goes in express mode with a full sleazy and slinked out strutter. Finally Shit Hot Soundsystem stirs up a fantastic controversial finale. Princely.

You're My Number 1 (limited 12")
Cat: BST X049. Rel: 14 Jan 19
  1. You're My Number 1
  2. You're My Number 1 (dub mix)
Review: In a rare exception from their usual hyper-obscure archive finds, Best Record have opted this time to give a proper reissue to a diggers favourite which enjoyed a second turn in the spotlight via a Dimitri From Paris compilation on BBE. Radiance and Andrea Stone's "You're My Number 1" is everything a boogie jam should be, from the liquid funk of the bassline to the snap of the drums - we defy anyone to stay off the floor when this pearl drops. It's no surprise to know it was mixed by the legendary M&M Productions team, featuring disco mix champion John Morales. The original is ace, but the extended dub mix on the flip is the one that will have the heads freaking out.

Secret Squirrels #2 (12" Nachpressung)
Cat: SS 2. Rel: 14 Jan 19
  1. Track 1 (8:00)
  2. Track 2 (7:35)
Review: The inaugural and highly sought after Secret Squirrel release came our way exactly a year ago... Could this be an annual thing? That would be a shame, as these edits really are very special. On the A-side we have what appears to be a high-NRG/newbeat reversion of Eddy Grant's "Nobody's Got Time" while the B-side is a much more subtle sample-based bassline chugger that loops and wriggles with filtered charm. Proper wholesome disco, these won't be secret for very long... Get on it!

Review: The mysterious nut-gathering disco fiends at Secret Squirrel continue their razor-sharp edit work with two more incredibly funky slices of nu-disco. Side A is a spirited fusion of wah wahs, filters and a tight vocal loop from Ike Strong's "Boogie Land" while Side B is a slower, acid-tickled jam that takes Blair's "Nightlife" and brings it kicking and screaming into the 21st century. Both are stunning and are guaranteed to sell out like the previous SS editions.

  3. You (Dan Shake cut)
Review: The Shake Tapes series continues to feed us righteous party fuel for discerning disco souls to get busy with. While the style can be wide-ranging from one record to the next, there's no time needed to get your head around "You Make Me Hot," a sizzling edit dripping with uplifting, uptempo brass and swooning strings. "Body Oil" is equally upfront, sure to incite all manner of heated displays of passion on the floor. "You" takes things further out into a synth-laced cosmic thrill ride that wriggles all the way across the B side, making this the most immediate Shake Tapes 12" to date.
