The Mexican (Mister Mushi Special edit)
The Mexican (Mister Mushi Special edit - instrumental)
Review: When British prog rock band Babe Ruth recorded 'The Mexican' - a low-slung funk-rock workout that came complete with weighty bass and killer drum breaks - they could have had no idea of the impact it would have during the block party phase of hip-hop's evolution (or, for that matter, that Jellybean Benitez would record a Latin hip-hop cover in the early 80s). It's the track's significance within hip-hop that inspired these revisions from break-digger Mister Mushi. Both of the producer's 'Special Edit' versions - vocal on the A-side, instrumental on the flip - make the most of the track's prototype hip-hop breaks, restless bassline and Latin-tinged fuck-rock guitar licks. They're basically the breaker-friendly revisions the dancers want and need.

The JB's - "Just Wanna Make You Dance" (feat Maxxi - Dimitri From Paris Special version)
Review: Dimitri From Paris returns with a fresh installment of his celebrated DFP Vaults series, highlighting deep cuts that reinforce his status as a top-tier remixer, DJ, and a true connoisseur of dance music’s hidden gems. This release holds particular significance for Dimitri, as it pays homage to the legendary James Brown, a figure whose influence in music is beyond measure. The release features Dimitri's 'Special Version' of 'Funky Men,' a track from James Brown's Soul Syndrome. Originally overlooked by Dimitri in 1981, it now shines with a unique disco beat that he’s reimagined using both vintage and modern editing techniques. The track has already proven its power on the dance floor. On the flip side, Dimitri revisits 'Just Wanna Make You Dance' by The J.B.'s, featuring Maxxi. This rare disco track, with its Caribbean flair, gets Dimitri’s expert touch, enhancing its dance floor appeal. DFP Vaults, the sister label to Le-Edits Records, presents this release with meticulous attention to detail, featuring state-of-the-art mastering and vintage-inspired packaging. This one is a must for any collector.

Review: Sunsay & The Soul Surfers' cover of William DeVaughn's 'Be Thankful For What You Got' is a smooth and classy rendition of the 1974 original. The funk and soul influences are evident in the laid-back groove and sultry vocals, creating a timeless and sophisticated sound. With Massive Attack's 1991 cover also gaining recognition, this song has become a staple in the genres of funk and soul. The 7' vinyl reissue from 2024 remains faithful to the original release, capturing the essence of the track in its entirety. The B-side features the instrumental version, providing musicians and DJs with a versatile tool for sampling and remixing. 'Be Thankful For What You Got' serves as a reminder to appreciate the things we have, both big and small, and to find contentment in the present moment.

Review: Jeroboam serves up the tongue-in-cheek title 'Brexit Funk' on Chuwanaga and is sure to get you moving as a result. There is some serious sunshine and Brit-funk loveliness to the title track. It is lit up with vibes keys and irresistible funk basslines that all brim with good-time fun. 'Peckham Night' is a more sultry and steamy sound for when the sun is setting thanks to its lazy drums and splashy cymbals all topped with some smoky trumpet soul. A dub mix rounds out with even deeper-cut grooves and romantic melodies. Three grown-up delights for sure.

Review: Octave Lab, based in Japan, have embarked on a fresh series of 7"s, onto which the A-side comes pressed with a classic American funk and soul original, whilst the B, handled by a hip-hop hand in the classic stylee, Cut Creator$, flips things to harder and hipper effect. This time we meet again with O.V. Wright's 'Let's Straighten This Out', an omnipotent-sounding instrumental soul track cut from the superb record The Bottom Line. The track adjudicates and resolves, between romantic plaintiff and defendant, an egregious inter-relational tort, by way of ultra-slick, leaden strings and anodyne pianos: "sit yourself down, girl, and talk to me... tell me, whassa on your mind?"

Review: For nearly a decade and three albums, Voilaaa has carved out a distinct niche, blending African rhythms with Disco dancefloor vibes and funky arrangements. Their Afro-Tropical journey, led by producer Bruno "Patchworks" Hovart, has produced hits like 'On te l'avait dit', 'Spies Are Watching Me', and 'Ben Bene La', along with global tours and festival appearances. Collaborations with artists such as Lass, Pat Kalla, Sir Jean, Ayuune Sule, Rama Traore, and Fouley Badiaga have been a hallmark, with Badiaga making a notable return on two tracks of their latest album. With C'est tout, Voilaaa sticks to their winning formula while infusing Latin and Caribbean elements, inspired by Hovart's travels in South America. Introduced with the spring release of a maxi single, this album delivers one hit after another. Tracks like 'Fache' featuring Pat Kalla showcase their signature sound: energetic Afrobeat horns, woozy chords, and funky clavinet licks over a dub disco-meets-Afro-boogie groove. The album's 14 tracks are largely composed by Hovart, with standout covers like Ebo Taylor's 'Love and Death' featuring Joao Selva's vocals and a unique rendition of Jamiroquai's 'Too Young to Die' with Olivya (Dowdelin).

Review: Little is documented about the creators of 1975's Funky Stuff. Jiro Inagaki and his band's legacy is almost entirely musical, devoid of the personal details that often accompany jazz musicians. To understand this album, it must be placed within its cultural context. Japan's jazz scene, one of the largest per capita, has faced accusations of imitation and unoriginality. However, Inagaki's work, particularly in the late '60s and early '70s fusion era, defies these stereotypes. Inagaki's genre-blending began with 1970's Head Rock, less experimental than Bitches Brew but equally dynamic. By 1975, Inagaki had embraced funk, culminating in Funky Stuff. The album, laden with rich bass-lines, wah-wah pedals, and layered percussion, opens with the danceable 'Painted Paradise'. Pianist Hiromasa Suzuki, who wrote most tracks, shines, especially on the melancholic 'Breeze' and the bossa-nova 'Gentle Wave'. Covers like Kool & The Gang's 'Funky Stuff' and Wayne Henderson's 'Scratch' are highlights. Funky Stuff joyously engages with funk's rhythms, making it a delightful hidden gem.

This US boogiefunk studio project stayed unreleased for a few decades until 2010, when these gems were collected for release. Review: Hiromasa Suzuki, a legendary composer and arranger, has been a vital figure in the Japanese music scene, contributing significantly to jazz, film, television, and commercials. Known for his innovative approach, Suzuki was deeply involved with influential artists like Terumasa Hino, Akira Ishikawa, and Jiro Inagaki during their most groundbreaking periods. His 1976 album High-Flying is a expertly crafted example to his forward-thinking creativity and remains a cornerstone of the WaJazz genre. Produced by Jiro Inagaki, High-Flying features a stellar lineup, including Shuichi Murakami on drums, Akira Okazawa on electric bass, and Masayoshi Takanaka on electric guitar. Suzuki's masterful compositions and arrangements shine through tracks like 'Screwdriver' and 'Scramble,' blending pre-fusion and crossover elements seamlessly. The album also includes contributions from Jun Fukamachi on keyboards and synthesiser, and Kayoko Ishu on vocals for select tracks. Recorded at Nippon Columbia Studio No. 2, this sought-after reissue captures the essence of Suzuki's groundbreaking work. Act fast to secure a copy of this essential masterpiece.

Review: Released in 1979 on Decca's Afrodisia imprint, Horizon Unlimited stands as a landmark in the Lijadu Sisters' discography. Produced by Fela Kuti's collaborator Odion Iruoje, and featuring BLO's Laolu Akins and Lemmy Jackson, this album blends raw funk with seductive electricity. The six tracks on this reissue are a masterclass in merging traditional rhythms with modern funk, exemplified in songs like 'Orere-Elejigbo,' 'Erora,' and 'Come On Home.' Each track opens with talking drums, weaving intricate percussion with fluid basslines and subtle synth tones. The Lijadu Sisters' harmonies remain the focal point, gliding over hypnotic grooves that maintain their freshness without becoming repetitive.

Review: Steve Leach’s Ocean Potion, set for reissue on Be With Records, is a hidden gem of Balearic beach-funk from 1976, featuring Leach—known today as Seasick Steve—in his earlier incarnation. Originally released exclusively in France on Philips, this LP is a funky AOR and blue-eyed soul masterpiece, brimming with vibrant, pop-funk energy. Recorded with the Crystal Grass Orchestra, the album boasts a lush orchestral sound that perfectly complements Leach’s smooth vocals and the rich harmonies of a stellar ensemble of backing singers. The supporting musicians are legends from the French music scene, including Don Ray as arranger and synth player, Marc Chantereau on percussion, Slim Pezin on guitar, André Ceccarelli on drums, Christian Padovan on bass, and Pierre Halation on flute. Their combined talents create a groove that is both immediate and infectious, making it hard to believe this record has remained relatively obscure. The reissue by Be With Records has been carefully remastered by Simon Francis, ensuring the sound quality is impeccable. Cicely Balston's expert cutting preserves the record’s integrity, while the original sleeve artwork, featuring a topless Leach reclining on a piano-laden flatbed truck at the beach, has been beautifully restored. This long-overdue reissue brings Ocean Potion back to the spotlight, where it rightly belongs.

Review: UK artist Risk Assessment is back once again with some potent sonic weaponry that is designed to make a big impact in the club. All four of the disco cuts are peak time sounds starting with 'Something New' which is awash with some crystalline synths and gloriously lush pads. 'Party People' is nice raw and live-sounding disco with lo-fi drums, slapping hits and a James Brown-style funk vocal. 'Like This Like That!' brings some funky little guitar motifs and a jumble of percussion while last of all, 'Girl At The Disco' shuts down with a more sensuous sound and slinky grooves that worm their way into your affections.

Review: Head Rock by Jiro Inagaki & His Soul Media offers a nostalgic journey into the Japanese jazz scene of 1970. Reminiscent of the film library albums from Italy, this album blends jazzy instrumentation with psychedelic rock elements, creating a unique sonic tapestry. While not a widely known Japanese album from the era, Head Rock provides pleasant grooves and moments of headphone bobbing enjoyment. The 2018 reissue on Columbia/Takt Jazz comes in a brilliant gatefold cover, making it a worthy addition to any collection. With original copies demanding steep prices, the reissue offers a more affordable option without compromising on quality. Head Rock is a worthwhile exploration of vintage Japanese jazz-rock fusion.

Review: Mr Bongo Record Club's Volume 7 presents a meticulously crafted mix of classic favourites and exciting new finds spanning a broad array of genres, including Brazilian, Latin, soul, disco, gospel, cosmic, dancehall and downtempo. This series has fans of the label excited about each volume that comes. With standout tracks like Os Panteras' Brazilian funk, the underground disco vibes of Claude Jay, and the soulful melodies of the Danish duo Gitte & Inger. Truth & Devotion's gospel soul and Chain Reaction's infectious grooves further illustrate the diverse range of influences at play. This volume particularly emphasises Brazilian music, diving deeper into folk and Afro-Brazilian sounds with selections from As Sublimes, Romeu Fernandes, and Conjunto de Percussao Dora Pinto. These tracks offer a refreshing shift from earlier volumes and showcase Brazil's rich musical heritage. A highlight is the exclusive 'Spring Has Sprung,' a collaboration between legendary Asha Puthli, the inventive band SOYUZ, and Swedish producer Sven Wunder. This track exemplifies the high-quality productions Mr Bongo Record Club is known for. Volume 7 blends Brazilian depth with dancefloor-ready hits, such as The Shades of Love's 'Come Inside.' This collection celebrates both timeless and contemporary music, reflecting the enduring allure of diverse and dynamic sounds.

Let’s Do It
Review: The small but already well-formed Stereo:type label has got a trip of new EPs all dropping this summer. UK producer Risk Assessment is behind them all and each one explores a classic disco sound with some modern dance floor weight. 'She's On The Floor' is a celebrity and feel-good jam with heart-swelling strings. 'Rhyme' cuts up a classic vocal sample and layers it over some house-leaning beats while 'Delicious' is a wig-out lead by its shimmering synth stabs. Last but not least is the breezy and sunny 'Let's Do It'.

Trio Ternura - "Vou Morar No Teu Sorriso"
Eliana Pittman - "Quem Vai Querer"
Review: The relaunch of the BRZ45s series brings back some of the most coveted Brazilian 45s, this time with a vibrant new design. This release features two standout tracks sure to captivate collectors and DJs alike. On Side-1, Trio Ternura's 'Vou Morar No Teu Sorriso' delivers an energetic blend of funk and soul, with powerful drums, dynamic breaks, and rich horns that drive the track forward. Originally from their 1971 self-titled LP, it's a perennial favorite in DJ sets, known for its infectious rhythm and big, soulful vocals. On Side-2, Eliana Pittman's 'Quem Vai Querer', a samba-funk gem from 1977. This track rolls out with a groovy samba beat, layered percussion and Eliana's captivating lead vocal, building beautifully into a catchy chorus, with the intensity of the drums amplifying as it progresses. Both tracks are perfect for the dancefloor, offering a taste of Brazil's rich musical heritage with a fresh, modern twist.

Sound Spirit
Sweet Emma
Review: German sextet "SOUND" recorded a standout set in Frankfurt in 1978, immortalised on the LP "Jazzlife" at Night (Vol.1). Singled out was their composition 'Sound Spirit,' a dancey, post-bop jazz track where Volker Burkhardt's tenorsax soulfully wails in a Coltrane fashion over Werner Bauer' syncopated keys and Heli Kneipp's and Athur Greaves' driving percussion and drumming, intertwined with Jann Meyer's funky bass. All culminate in this super groovy contrapuntal track that often takes you nicely by surprise. Now this seminal piece arrives in a limited edition 7" of 300 on Tramp Records, the small but significant home of some of Germany's best reissued funk, soul and jazz on vinyl. Nat Adderly's 'Sweet Emma' was one of "SOUND's" other distinctive tracks that night, and it too resurfaces on the B side. This upbeat version may teeter on a 'trad' jazz precipice, but as the saxophone takes the cornet parts of the original, its tonality draws the listener in. These tracks already command attention from the discerning contemporary jazz community, and now again available is a must for those who like both upbeat or downtempo late 70s jazz.

This reissue breathes new life into a track that's been cherished by enthusiasts for decades. Side-1 features 'Break It Loose' (Part 1), a vibrant display of big band funk with powerful vocals and lush strings. The track's blend of funk with a touch of disco and crisp guitar riffs creates an irresistible groove that's both sophisticated and energetic. On Side-2, 'Break It Loose' (Part 2) shifts focus to the instrumental aspects, emphasising intricate percussion and a more subdued, rhythm-driven approach. Staying true to the original, this reissue is exactly as the original. This reissue is for the funk aficionados, offering a timeless blend of classic soul and funk vibes.

Review: Some 25 killer library music cuts by the German film music maestro Peter Thomas, on audiophile pressing, in a deluxe 2×10? set. Uber-rare, never-before-released material spanning 1968-1976 - and sourced from Thomas' personal reel-to-reel tape archive - this bombastic instrumental set spans a whole range of quirky overseen by the composer himself, documenting an approach to composition that essentially augurs electronic music production as we know it today. Prolific in scope, the 25 pieces here rival the sheerly industrious proliferations of many of today's artists, and even outstrips them in quantitative ambition; but then again, what less might one expect from a soundtrack artist by trade, whose work spanned over 600 films? Best of this bunch have to be 'Meeting Palermo', whose brushes revel in a beaucoup frisson, and 'Astral Snow' - a whacked-out absurdist electro-disco frazzler for the most frenetic out there. This one also comes with four recently unearthed 'lost' tracks from Warner Chappell's CPM Archive series, which have never been released on vinyl before. We'll hazard a quip: the word 'timeless' often doesn't come to mind, yet it has done here.

Nonato & Seu Conjunto - "Cafua" (2:23)
Jose Roberto - "Crioula Multicolorida" (3:10)
Review: Mr. Bongo credit themselves with taking a selection of the most in-demand and asked-for titles in their Brazil '45s catalogue, lending them all a loving repress in due homage to the music of the nation. This time, they focus their energies on the synergy shared between the late composer and record producer Nonato Buzar and drummer Jose Roberto, both of whose contributions to the MPB canon are unmissable, referent sonic studs. Nonato's 'Cafua' is a powerful eurythmic, its strigiform vocals proving a suitable narcotic to offset to the track's otherwise restless horns and post-bossa-nova drum clacks, which hit like quick patterings against soft cartilage. Roberto's 'Crioula Multicolorida' is a more vintage recording, erstwhile bringing rare "samba rock" grooviness and reflective, call and response lyricisms to a redolent rhythm.
