Review: Israeli tech house stalwart Shlomi Aber has sure thrown a few curveballs at us in recent years and this could possibly be the biggest yet! The man behind such celebrated titles over the years such as 'Detroit Days/Chicago Nights', 'Sea Of Sand' and 'Clones In My Backroom' moves away from sunny and slinky tech house sounds (as heard on his esteemed Be As One imprint) and now presents a darker, fierce and functional sound that's more suited to clandestine warehouse parties. Adam Beyer's Drumcode seems like a perfect fit for his new style, which has recently impressed via similarly straight up labels like Odd Even and Figure. From the tunnelling peak-time specialism of opener "Inflict", the old-school acid stomp of "Accelerator" (which really bangs the box!) and the stripped back, heads down Millisan hypnotism of 'Typeface', these are some sturdy mixing tools that will make a worthy addition to any serious techno DJ's arsenal.

Review: Crew love is true love: Beste Freunde 05 is upon us and it's not likely to hang around. Once again it's a whole new collective of like-minded souls together for a fresh expedition. Anil Aras leads the mission with a rippling Detroitian understated number simply called "Track 1". He's flanked by Paolo Rocco and Moises. The former ups the temperature and gets us in a lather with the insistent pace of "Ill" while the latter sooths our souls and oils our joints with the slippery hypnosis session "Easy Beauty". Finally Esposito & Nadje run point with the heaviest tool of the trip - the bubbling technoid "HBP". Friends till the end!

  1. Ascendi (7:34)
  2. Konstantinos (7:52)
  3. Poison (Insidious mix) (9:23)
  4. Wormhole Transmission Service (6:40)
Review: Melbourne's Steeplejack imprint has entered the game at just the right time, when the sounds of IDM, minimal house and techno are blurring ever so quickly into one glitchy umbrella sound. Nali, who has already appeared on the imprint a few times, comes through with four inimitable cuts, all of them powered by a distinctive 90s texture recalling the 'intelligent' side of dance music. "Ascendi" is the sort of tune that Autechre would have made had they been more techno-prone, while "Konstantinos" bleeps its subtle 303 waves over a stripped beat groove. The B-side opens with the 'Insidious' mix of "Poison", a true shape-shifter with a subtly pulsating techno beat, and closes with the relatively more jovial "Wormhole Transmission Service", a tune that takes inspiration from the UK's jungle sound thanks to a myriad of broken beats and breaks.

  1. Avka (New Life) (7:14)
  2. Dybbuk (6:03)
  3. Modern Matters (6:20)
Review: Israeli producer Yotam Avni started out only a few years ago, making waves on esteemed tech house imprints such as the local Be As One and Californian deep house institution Seasons. Fast forward to now, he's affiliated with such tastemaker labels as Innervisions and Hotflush - a perfect fit for his new darker, tech-influenced sound. Venturing further down the spiral, his latest offering is for Stroboscopic Artefacts - and it is actually his third release on the Berlin based experimental techno imprint. It follows up his impressive contribution to their esteemed Monad series. The A side features the sweaty Carnival vibes of "Avka" (New Life) featuring intense latin polyrhythms assisted by adrenalising rave horns. The rhythms seem to be a recurring theme here, as "Dybbuk" proves, but this time it's a hybrid of steely machine drums thrown in the mix. Finally "Modern Matters" is the most straight head offering: its austere mechanical swagger supported by hypnotic, ethnic prayer chants - and to quite stunning effect.

  3. Roche - "One For Cherushii" (8:01)
  4. David Last - "All That's Left" (feat Lavender - dance mix) (5:51)
Review: Besides its inimitable name, Hobo Camp has had a pretty unbeatable first few years in the game, switching up the electro sound with shades of loopy house and techno. These guys have released over two dozen EPs since 2016, and are showing no signs of stopping if this new collaborative release is anything to by! Pumping the vibes through with utter ease, Run The Length Of Your Wilderness is a daring, rip-roaring amalgamation of tech-driven sounds that span just about every quality corner of the game. "The Industrial City", from Cherushii, moans and weeps with a fragile acid bassline over broken percussion beats, while Nackt's "Next" floats at a house tempo, driven forwards by a winding bass from the darkest corners of the 4/4 game. On the flip, Roche's "One For Cherushii" bigs up his counterpart with a deep, aqueous house chugger, and David Last's "All That's Left" drops a clean, sparkly prog house groover for the lovers.

Review: To be called up on Computer Controlled Records is quite an honour these days, and any artist doing so will be added to a catalogue that is exclusively made up of talents such as DJ Overdose, Mark Forshaw, and Chris Moss Acid. The lesser known, but equally capable, Cignol has been recruited and given two sides of wax on which to press up his post-industrial, mechanical, strain of acid-electro. "Final Approach" and "Submerged Aegis" make for two sublime openers, catapulting us into a bleek and distant planet where 303 bleeps emanate from every possible angle. The flip is equally intricate in its visual sensation, offering three more stupendous voyages through intergalactic sound, travelling at hyper-sonic wavelenghts, for the keener hardware aficionados.

Review: Thule Records has been doing a sterling job of reviving the niche scene of Icelandic minimal techno they started back in the 90s, and one of those names they're bringing back into focus is Cold. Following last year's appearance on the Exiles EP, he's returning to the main label with a new batch of appropriately chilling excursions into dub techno and minimalism. "Natures Call" actually sports an acid line coursing through the centre, but it's kept firmly within bounds amidst the slender beats and icy pads, while "Fractal Memory" fully plunges into the sub zero depths of spring reverb decays and space echo delays. "Dub Safari" is the hit here though, sporting a subtle housey groove that plays off the dubby textures perfectly.

Review: More sublime and superbly executed dub techno excursions from a modern master. Dutch producer and DJ Roger Gerressen returns to his Irenic imprint after a tremendous EP as Novio Dub Tribe (with frequent collaborator Sinan Alakus) and homeboy Alex Jansen of Dilated Pupils fame. This also follows up a tremendous full length for Sushitech under his Monoaware alias. Cold, dubby and greyscale perspectives from the deep offered up here on the first side of the Yuach EP, drifting away in gloriously hypnotic fashion with delay drenched feedback loops and long trails of reverb. On the flip, the man from Nijmegen saves the best for last on the evocative and cavernous slow burner "A" which demonstrates his stunning use of analogue texture and a sublime fusion of frequencies that spans a wonderful 10 minute long duration. You'd wish it would never end. Brilliant work as always from Gerressen.

  4. Crow Hill
Review: HVL has landed on many different labels in recent years, but Rough House Rosie will always be something of a spiritual home for the adventurous deep electro and techno craftsman. Across the Hidden Valley EP he displays a fluid, instinctive approach to composition - "Enslaver" rolls out like a live jam but the detail and control embedded in the track is astounding. "Distom Spook" is charged with nervous acidic energy, while "Lemon Stealer" takes things in a more experimental direction with all manner of snaking synth voices wriggling around a crisp electro beat. "Crow Hill" finishes the EP off with a slow, rolling breakbeat groove and hazy pads for a quintessential B2 wind-down session.

  4. Hackney Tower
Review: Bliq Records fire up the coffers for 2018 with a new jam from Iakovos, otherwise known as Lowjac and spotted in groups such as Anopolis and Deemonlover. He's a regular on Bliq, and steps up under his own name with seriously on-point club tackle for those who like their hybrid sounds. "Singers" straps some breakbeat choppage to a mellow deep techno stomp, while "Evil Flower" unfurls in a fit of edgy electro before "Adidas People" cools things down with a focused trip into straight up psych-out techno. "Hackney Tower" finishes the EP off on a wonderfully creepy tip, all skin-crawling acidic gurgles and unsettling voices to inspire paranoid glances in the club.

Review: Those who've kept track with Krystal Klear's career will note that the Irish producer regularly pays tribute to historic aspects of dance music culture. Rarely, though, has he made his intentions quite as clear as this. As the name suggests, Club Studies features cuts that wholeheartedly doff a cap towards the records played at legendary New York clubs. On the A-side you'll find two versions of "Just a Little"; a groovy, soulful and sparkling mix inspired by the weekly Sunday Service bashes, and a chunky, hypnotic, percussion-led affair that nails the sound Danny Tenaglia was championing at Twilo in the late 1990s. Turn to the flip for the muscular, Junior Vasquez style dark garage of "Dedication (Sound Factory Mix)" and the riff-heavy Brooklyn techno throb of the "NASA Mix" of the same track.

Review: Although Portugal's Malvito has only released a handful of EPs thus far, it is clear from his use of melodies and beats that this guy thinks way beyond the house / techno framework. He launches his own label to kick off 2018, Berimbau Discos, an outlet for his dextrous strain of neo-minimalism. The opener "Syzlack" is a harmonic glide through vast planes of bleeps, stretching the beats over rough textures, while "King Of Cool" features Zenner in what is a wild, sporadic attack of drums and jazzy coolness, layered with a majestic dub feel. Last but not least, "Boteco" bounces its fuzzy analogue drums over a sticky wall of tribal percussion, calling to the darkest, deepest depths of the jungle. An artist (and label) to watch out for this year...

Review: IDM and experimental electronics dwelling on the outer limits of techno here, from one of the most impressive figures on the Scandinavian scene. Titled 'The 3D Printed Songbook', it features the emotive chill electro of "First Day" that kinda sounds like space invaders in your typewriter. We also enjoyed the slow burning afterhours techno of "It's Coming", equally impressive with its industrial edge: off-kilter/steely and textured rhythms alongside sludgy arpeggios. Despite its name, "Texas Is The Reason" sounds more like Buffalo, New York via Stockholm on this hypnotic sci-fi thriller that merges Mike Parker style dystopianism with Mannerfelt's penchant for lo-fi electronics. By contrast, the sublime ambient interludes In between act as nice palette cleansers for the ears. Released via his eponymous imprint, Mannerfelt kicks off 2018 on the right foot, following up work on Fever Ray's most recent album.

Review: As Thule Records and AE Records continue to revive their foundational contributions to the Icelandic techno scene, they return our attention to this golden collaboration between key protagonists Thor and Yagya. With the space provided by an LP, Oz Artists stretch themselves out with all kinds of tempos and moods yet still bound together by that seductive frosty finish that makes the music from Iceland so captivating. At times the tracks take on an old-skool techno stance, not least on the utterly grooving "As If The Living Were Moving", whilst elsewhere you can enjoy low slung oddball sonics a la "The Phuture Is Cow", but the common theme throughout is funk. It may come in strange shapes and sizes, but back in 1998 Oz Artists stumbled upon a style that doesn't show its age one bit.
