Robot Romance
Robot Romance (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: AGR 002. Rel: 29 Nov 21
  1. Electric Nostalgia (7:17)
  2. Robot Romance (7:11)
  3. Fallin' (Transition mix) (7:09)
Review: David Agrella returns on his newly-minted Agrellomatica Records with three fresh interpretations of Robot Romance. Agrella is a DJ, producer and recording artist with a growing reputation as a versatile selector. Showcasing his musical inspirations across genres via his Agrellomatica slot on London radio station Bloop, the first release on his recently launched eponymous imprint gained support from artists including Moxie, Korea Town Acid and Jane Fitz, alongside high praise from the likes of Ransom Note, Vinyl Factory and Bolting Bits. Electric Nostalgia is an utterly addictive track that draws you in right from the start, as swirling synths and subby pads float above crisp breaks. Robot Romance slowly intensifies with fluttering chords that feel weightless, as the even kick drums meet an elastic bassline - providing a propulsive gem. Agrella's Transition Mix of Fallin', which closes the E.P comes with pummeling drums and muscular acidic melodies.

Preamble EP
Cat: RWAY 001. Rel: 29 Nov 21
  1. The Arising Of The Phoenix (In Memory Of Mark Bartissol) (6:38)
  2. Running Out Of Thyme (6:34)
  3. Hey, Rube! (7:02)
  4. Pickled Beets (6:47)
Review: When cult Canadian Akufen (which is, fact fans, a phonetic spelling of acouphene, the French word for tinnitus) releases music, it doesn't hang around long. And it has been that way for decades now. This new one on Ourway will surely keep up that long tradition, offering as it does more timeless house minimalists and studio trickery. 'The Arising Of The Phoenix (In Memory Of Mark Bartissol)' is a deep house groove with heavenly melodic loops that cast your mind free from this world. 'Running Out Of Thyme' offers a wonky, jerking beat to make you move your feet and the pixelated pads of 'Hey, Rube!' bring scintillating texture, while 'Picked Beats' is a darker, dubbier closer.

ALT 002
ALT 002 (12")
Cat: ALT 002. Rel: 30 Nov 21
  1. Delta - "Spy" (Nosferatu mix) (6:57)
  2. Cabanelas - "Sambu Y Los Morsas" (6:17)
  3. Z@p - "Yeartail" (6:10)
  4. Justin Drake & Quinn Whalley - "Slack-Strobe" (7:55)
Review: The Alt label hits its second record with a sterling cast of wayward techno bods in tow. Things fire up in a tough and trippy manner as Delta wrings all kinds of tricky noises out of his gear and keeps the bass brooding in the low end, but hold tight for a perfectly 90s chord progression in that pad line. Cabanelas has a bleepy mission on 'Sambu Y Los Morsas' which flits between creepy passages of tension and acid tweaking drops. Z@p keeps things melancholic while adhering to the record's over-arching old-skoool outboard vibe, and then Justin Drake and Quinn Whalley sign the record off with a slice of proto trance for the deepest of 90s-tinted dancefloor reveries.

sT8818r Humanoid
sT8818r Humanoid (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ASGDE 035. Rel: 03 Dec 21
  1. Stakker Humanoid (4:57)
  2. sT8818r (Luke Vibert remix) (4:32)
  3. sT8818r (A664 mix By Autechre) (4:25)
  4. sT8818r (Mike Dred remix) (7:23)
Review: Harking back to the very dawn of acid house in the UK, Humanoid will forever be an emblem for a revolutionary moment when this new music and its attendant culture befuddled the establishment and entranced the youth. A chart classic like no other, 'Stakker Humanoid' blew the rave scene apart and now it's getting a fresh airing thanks to the ever-excellent De:tuned label. That means the remix line-up comes in heavy, leading in with Luke Vibert bringing a fierce strain of acidic breakbeat with his own cheeky flair bedded in. Meanwhile, Autechre deliver the 'A664' version, which predictably rearranges the track to their own geometric design, but not at the expense of the electro-funk clout, and then UK acid veteran Mike Dred delivers a wonderfully dirty 303 throbbing take to send the package home in style.

X01
X01 (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: XYX 01. Rel: 29 Nov 21
  1. Track 1 (5:48)
  2. Track 2 (6:32)
  3. Track 3 (5:25)
Review: Here's some fresh techno from Intercepts, a new project dropping three slabs of hi-def, immersive club material from three different un-named artists for adventurous souls. 'Track 1' moves at a slower tempo and deals in fractured rhythms, all the better to carry the huge swathes of atmospheric sound design. 'Track 2' rolls with a deceptive discoid funk which contrasts neatly with the looped up Berlin techno-friendly elements. 'Track 3' takes things even further out into experimental - but still rhythmical - territory, marking Intercepts out as a label with a strong sense of adventure and their own distinctive way of merging influences into something which may well tickle your ear drums.

Y01 (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: XYY 01. Rel: 29 Nov 21
  1. Track 1 (6:53)
  2. Track 2 (5:54)
  3. Track 3 (5:03)
Review: Having just made a splash with a 12" of adventurous leftfield techno, Intercepts simultaneously emerges as an inventive force in the field of electro too. Again, we get three shadowy producers stepping out at a mean clip, with 'Track 1' running faster than average and revelling in razor sharp edits that split the difference between braindance, d&b and machine funk and come up with dark, sinewy gold. 'Track 2' eschews the kicks and works a few more melodic elements into the mix for a starry-eyed piece with an underlying spookiness. Then 'Track 3' locks into something much more upfront with a chunky lead hook and satisfyingly dirty drums. There's serious flex in the synth work here, suggesting someone that may have been honing their craft for some time already. Electro heads take note - this is something different.

  2. Profiler (6:08)
  3. Wurlitzer Machinery (4:44)
  4. Sonica (4:54)
Review: Kiev-based Greek producer Stef Mendisidis tends to save his best material for Klockworks, returning to the imprint periodically with a new batch of inspired techno workouts tailor-made for Berlin clubs. His latest collection of cuts - his first for Klockworks in two years - is full of intoxicating treats, with deeper workouts - see the drowsy electric piano chords, galloping techno drums and sci-fi synth washes of 'Wurlitzer Machinery' and creepy, shape-shifting breathlessness of opener 'Stalker' - being joined by blasts of intergalactic aural warfare (the thrusting but spacey 'Profiler') and hypnotic, early morning dancefloor intensity (the otherworldly stomp of 'Sonica').

  1. Doyuu (6:42)
  2. Orgy (6:25)
  3. Fever (7:27)
  4. Orgy (Sir Real Broken mix) (6:42)
Review: As the vaults of 90s techno get scoured for forgotten gems, here's a cheeky one from Tim Wright under his Moondog alias. There's an unmistakable touch about Wright's work, whichever name he operated under, but you could easily call this 1997 12" a Tube Jerk release and no one would question it. Skippy, bugging beats with ample wriggling synth lines and a preference for the weird and wonky, this is a very particular sound that should appeal to those who like to keep their sets fun and fruity. Also watch out for Sir Real's gnarly remix of 'Orgy' which turns up the techno heat, as you might well expect from an OG House of God resident.

Titan (limited orange splattered vinyl 12")
Cat: TOKEN 104LTD. Rel: 29 Nov 21
  1. Carnage (5:32)
  2. Spirit Train (5:16)
  3. Titan (5:11)
  4. Elektra (5:16)
Review: Spanish techno champ Oscar Mulero has a well-established relationship with Token, and it figures given both artist and label deal in the kind of gritty, monolithic techno that fells stadiums and detonates festivals. After a three year gap the forces are reunited for the appropriately titled Titan 12", which finds Mulero in searing form. 'Carnage' deals in a blistering salvo of psychoactive synth pulses while 'Spirit Train' burrows in hard with a nightmarish cargo of nerve-jangling frequencies. The title track is a boisterous, acidic affair to accent the peak of any big room set, and 'Elektra' lays down eerie looped phrases and scythe-like drum patterns for precise incisions into your innermost psyche.

  1. Pozor (4:16)

  3. Buckets (4:07)
  4. All My Mites (4:31)
Review: Techtonic has played a vital role in shaping the UK's electronic underground and now the label welcomes a debutant who is sure to go on to have his own bold impact. Provan is clearly well versed inbound system culture and on this first official release, he crashes together elements from techno, drum & bass and dubstep into something new and powerful. Thee high impact tunes kick off with the stark 'Pozor,' move into brutally broken beat territory on 'Beastwoman' then slip into minimal rhythmic exploration on 'Buckets.' 'All My Mites' is a dystopian closer to blow up the club at 5 am.

Let's Dance (hand-stamped 10")
Cat: 08 PM. Rel: 29 Nov 21

  2. Quinz Lord (5:16)
  3. E-O (with T Lavanchy) (4:18)
  4. I Love You (4:18)
Review: These four oddball new beat tracks are perfect for those wanting to serve up some left of centre dance floor thrills. Opener 'Let's Dance' mangles a David Bowie sample into waves of glistening synths and silvery drum machine sounds that will swell any crowd. 'Quinz Lord' is a twisted technoid monster with spangled leads and machine-gun effects, and 'E-O' (with T Lavanchy) then goes a little deeper into early Chicago house territory with some well placed vocal samples adding the soul. 'I Love You,' as the title suggests, is a slightly more warm and heartfelt sound but still with plenty of prickly beats and raw perc.

  3. Spirit Navigation (Reeko remix) (6:23)
  4. Voyage To Pollux (6:28)
Review: The non series's eighth release is a label debut from Tory. He serves up four banging cuts that kick off with 'Ego Death.' It is built on muscular drum loops and rattling bass, with watery droplets and oversized hi-hats adding to the tunnelling effect of the groove. 'Spirit Navigation' keeps up the pressure with another suspensory groover that hangs in mid-air with rubbery bass and tightly woven synths. Reeko takes it into a darker place with a remix for the warehouse parties out there and things then get tripped out and decidedly sci-fi on 'Voyage To Pollux,' a nice and atmospheric tune with wispy synth motifs.

Review: Up next on German label Rawax is Detroit producer Jared Wilson, who borrows respectfully from the Motor City's past to bring forth his own take on techno on this great EP. From the old school underground house of 'Positivity', there's more subterranean tackle in the form of the gutsy acid stomper 'Lynnwood18 Artifact' up next. Over on the flip, the basement party continues well into the A.M. hours with the dirty percolator jack of 'Lynnwood 19' and the low slung cosmic journey of 'RF2' closing it out on an off-kilter vibe.

Review: The sixth album by Emile Facey under the Plant43 moniker and the seventh release on his Plant43 Recordings imprint since its inception in 2020, Sublunar Tides is his most expressive and stylistically wide ranging to date. Over 52 minutes and nine tracks the album whisks the listener effortlessly from fast-paced dancefloor electro through the slowmotion cloud-soaring of Concrete Breakers, the intricate experimental synths of Perfect Ruin to the lilting, songlike tones of the emotional album closer 'Tides Align'.

A co-founder of London's Bleep43 crew, Facey has been promoting underground electro and techno since the 90's. As a producer he's been releasing records since 2005 with a string of releases on respected scene favourites such as Central Processing Unit, Frustrated Funk, Semantica, Shipwrec and Cultivated Electronics. He has played live alongside DJ Stingray, ERP/Convextion, Sync 24, Surgeon, Legowelt, Urban Tribe, Svreca, Datassette among many others.

Review: Zodiac Childs are a real hero duo in the world of spaced out breakbeats. They don't release often - just a few times since 2018, but always on revered labels like Furthur Electronix, Exalt and their own Zodiac Wax, but when they do it is a real event. Atoms to Atoms is a long awaited debut album spread across six glorious sides of vinyl, packed with cosmic breaks, sci-fi ambience and lush future soundscapes. Plenty of subtle rave signifiers are deeply entrenched in these pieces, which range from purely atmospheric such as 'Kepler Track Two' to absolutely blissed out dance floor territory as on 'O To The M.' These tracks could have been unearthed on a DAT lost since 1994, or they could be beamed back from the future. Either way, they're excellent.
