Review: If you were judging Kieran Hebden's 11th Four Tet studio album merely on the way it's presented, you'd immediately think he'd spent the last two years immersed in early '90s ambient house albums. While it's unlikely he's done that, it's fair to say that New Energy does owe a debt to classic electronica sets from that period. For all the exotic instrumentation and subtle nods to post-dubstep "aquacrunk" experimentalism and chiming, head-in-the-clouds sunrise house, the album feels like a relic of a lost era. That's not meant as a criticism - New Energy is superb - but it is true that his choice of neo-classical strings, gentle new age melodies, sweeping synthesizer chords and disconnected vocal samples would not sound out of place on a Global Communication album.

Tail Lift (12")

  1. Tail Lift (5:53)
  2. MPH (5:17)
Review: One could argue that Joe, the enigmatic producer from London (we think!), has been partly responsible for Hessle Audio's continues success but, most importantly, for the label's off-kilter approach. This latter point has meant that Hessle Audio has never stuck too closely to one genre and, instead, appealed to the wider electronic gamut, from the bass-heads to the house-jockies. He's back with an impenetrable two-tracker coloured in lime green; "Tail Lift" dominates the A-side with a strong, full-bodied house groove that's been filtered with all sorts of jungle sounds and tribal influences while, on the flipside, "MPH" is Joe focussing on our pure experimentation - broken jungle breaks, oddball synth bleeps and classic piano house keys merge to create something truly unexpected. It's Joe. On Hessle.

Review: Given the amount of labels he's appeared on over the years, it's something of a surprise to find that this is Subb An's first outing on INFUSE. As usual, the experienced tech-house producer delivers the goods, beginning with the undulating, bass-heavy late night hustle of funk-fuelled A-side "Future-Wise". While it's little more than a killer, bassline-driven groove with a few tweaked acid lines and strange effects now and then, there's no denying the track's dancefloor chops. He continues on a similar theme on "111", wrapping watery riffs and spacey electronic motifs around a locked-in rhythm and booming bassline, while "Move (5Am Dub)" is a similarly trippy and hypnotic affair tailor-made for early morning sets.

Review: Yoyaku offshoot Hostom has enjoyed a successful 2017 so far. This is the matter-of-fact label's third EP of the year to date. As usual, there's no information about the producer (or producers) involved, or pesky track titles for that matter. The A-side is a pleasingly positive affair, with jaunty, tweaked organ stabs and woozy chords buzzing around a typically well programmed, on-point groove. The track gains in intensity throughout, with the heaviness of the percussion being ramped up in stages. There's more of a tribal feel about the B-side, with densely layered percussion underpinning hushed, stretched out chords and dark, trippy effects.

Review: There's been plenty to cheer on the six previous releases by Aleksandr Voznichenko's MOI project, so hopes are naturally high for this seventh EP. He's in an unusually positive frame of mind on side A, wrapping a bouncy, rolling, bass-heavy deep house groove in subtle but spacey synth motifs and languid, starry melodies. There's a similar feel to the slightly more percussive flipside cut, whose combination of chunky snares, solid kicks, skipping cymbals and fluid, new age inspired melody lines consistently hits the mark. There's woozy warmth to both tracks, too, making them both picturesque and undeniably floor-friendly.

Review: SlapFunk continue to showcase a distinctive brand of bumping, swinging house music with nods to the minimal way of doing things but a much fatter, richer sound palette at work. Levi Verspeek gets the vibe, having previously popped up on Body Parts, Apollonia and Lazare Hoche to name but a few, and the quality remains high on this new grip of party heaters. "Tam Tam" is a dexterous, catchy groover, while "Octo" gets into a twitchier headspace for the seriously locked-in freakout crew. "We Smell Sausage" takes things in a strange but techy direction before "Hmmm" turns out the most reduced offering on the record, all finely chiseled drums built with the DJ in mind.

Review:  A year after he helped launch the label via the brilliant "The Fatal Flaw In Disco" 12", Mark Seven returns to Ari Goldman's World Building label. As you might expect, he's once again in a retro-futurist frame of mind, laying down a series of house tracks inspired by the style's glory days of the late '80s and early '90s. He first doffs a cap towards bouncy New Jersey deep house from the turn of the '90s ("Chapter II: Enter This House"), before wrapping Chicago style analogue bass and fluid electronics around a sweaty, Kenny Dope inspired rhythm track. "Chapter VII: Salvation" is a smooth and loved-up tribute to the Burrell Brothers and Dream II Science, while closer "Helping Hand" is pleasingly deep and dreamy.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Back in the day, there was one artist that stood out in the underground, this person was admired and respected worldwide, his cuts we're played from Paris, London, NYC to Chicago & back again, he was - Olivier Portal AKA Playin'4 The City. This year, 2014 - Playin 4 The City is back, 3 brand new tracks released on the deeply respected US label - Plastik People. Side A delivers two soulful edged tracks with a reprise at the start of A1 which keeps the roots of P4TC from back in the day - both tracks include live bass by Slikk Tim. Side B "Good Groove" is a black & white track, It has the feel of the early Bouge & Shuffle track that came out on Olivier's Straight Up label, deep & groovy elements, 16 bit samples & keeping it four to the floor. Good Groove is sure to be a classic, one for the true heads & the P4TC collective.

Review: Earlier this year, Samuel Andre Madsen impressed with his debut album under the S.A.M alias, Dream State of a Bellmaker. That album was marked out by the producer's willingness to flit between styles, applying his deep and quietly melodious approach to techno, house, ambient and electronica. This follow-up EP takes a similar approach. So while untitled opener "Track 1" is a hypnotic, dreamy and rolling deep house club workout, "Track 2" is a sublime chunk of texture-driven, deep space ambient. Similarly, on the reverse, the analogue Detroit techno-meets-Chicago jack of "Track 3" makes way for the intergalactic, dub-flecked IDM shuffle of "Track 4". Naturally, all four cuts hit to spot - though we'd expect little less from a man of Madsen's talents.

Review: Sheffield's Thatmanmonkz returns with the Feels Trip To The District EP, where he teams up with his good pal Martin Miguel. The record is inspired by several trips to dope parties in the District of Columbia, home of the quickly rising label Better Listen Records. Starting off with the the lo-slung disco deepness of "Sweetiez Fresh", it's a dusty and looped up jam that will appeal to fans of the Robsoul sound. On the flip, things take a well funkier and more soulful turn with that familiar vocal on "The Assassinator" and finally things end on a groovy and sun kissed note with the slo-mo/hip-hop inspired boogie of "XDC". Real name Scott Moncrieff, he's appeared previously on a who's who of labels such as Delusions Of Grandeur, Kolour LTD and Classic in recent times.

Review: Yoyaku Distribution's matter-of-fact YYY series continues to impress, delivering a third "mystery" 12" of the year to date. The un-credited producer gets straight down to business on side A, wrapping darting melodies and liquid electronics around fizzing cymbals, undulating kick drums and warm bass in an outer-space tech-house style. There's a slightly darker and more energy-packed feel to the flipside track, whose staccato percussion hits, restless drum machine handclaps and back-alley stabs sound like they were created with sweaty basement dancefloors in mind (despite the presence of the series' usual fluid chords).

Review: There's been a fair bit of hype surrounding Cody Currie's first appearance on Secret Reels, and it's not hard to see why. Like the producer's previous EPs on Pusic, Better Listen and Razor 'N' Tape reserve, Peach Fuzz is full of languid, sun-kissed, heart-warming deep house goodness. We're particularly enjoying the bustling thrust of "Prologue", where wild jazz-funk style synth solos wrap themselves around a driving jazz-house groove, though the funk-driven, sample-heavy warmth of "Woman" and bouncy, flute-laden disco-house shuffler "Urlaub Kommt" both push it close. Speaking of disco-house, title track "Peach Fuzz" has "future peak-time anthem" written all over it.

Review: Yet more gems from the Silverlining studio courtesy of Asad Rizvi, this time turning to the much sought after "Breezin Thru" track originally released in 1998. This is a true classic from the golden era of tech house, rooted in the London scene defined by the likes of Terry Farley and the like, and yet it sounds like it could have been made yesterday. The strident, upfront beat and immersive atmospheric shimmers are pure dancefloor gold. On the flip, Andy Blake and Dave Coker's Doodlebug project gets the remix treatment, winding up as crafty electro breaks with a tilt towards the deep end of the dance.

Review: With a wealth of much-played material to his name, DJ Steaw is fast becoming one of the most reliable producers in house music. It's perhaps unsurprising, then, that Kerri Chandler has snapped up a trio of Steaw productions for his long-running Madhouse imprint. As you might expect, all three cuts swing with the bass-heavy bounce of vintage U.S house, with the rolling organ stabs, spine-tingling vocal samples and classic, basement-bothering percussion of A-side "Bel Air" standing out. It's a close-run thing, though; B-side opener "Reach Out" is a sterling combination of driving drums and warm musical elements, while "Deeper" is a woozy and hazy trip into locked-in early morning deep house territory. In other words, it's packed with playable club tracks.

He begins by doffing a cap to Theo and Moodymann on "Get Down", a shuffling, warm and dreamy workout full of rich disco bass, twinkling electric piano keys, gentle vocal samples and layered hand percussion. Confirmed summer jam "Through it All" is a breezy, string-laden bastion of piano-heavy positivity complete with bustling analogue bass and "Strings of Life" style solos, while B-side "Kingdom" sits somewhere between crunchy Chicago house, gospel and lilting Motor City deepness. Review: Fresh from the success of two top notch EPs on iile, Leo Pol unveils his most ambitious release to date. All I Got In Me is something of a beast, with seven tracks stretched across two slabs of wax. It's a rather pleasingly varied affair, all told, with the experienced producer flitting between Detroit style techno futurism ("BH2"), warm, chunky and occasionally tough deep house ("All I Got In Me", "Live Concrete"), spacey beatbox electro ("Live Love") and the kind of tech-house cuts that look to both the Motor City and Chicago for inspiration. As a bonus, he's also included a collaborative cut under the St Ouen Connection moniker, the deep and hazy, techno-tempo positivity of "Masile".

Making his return after 15 long years, Steve O'Sullivan's re-energised Mosaic Records is the perfect place to get reacquainted with the chap. "Invitation To Love" is as romantic as the title would suggest, letting gorgeous chords and pad washes ooze out over a steady ticking beat. The rhythm gets chopped up a little on "Remember When", while "Into The Night" heads into head-nodding dubstep territory with mammoth bass replaced by elegant Motor City synth shimmers.

Review: Jules Etienne is back on Cocktail d'Amore Music with Triangle Des Bermudas.
Referencing the legendary region in the Western part of the North Atlantic Ocean, this EP opens up to a mysterious space of adventure and discovery.
The title track is a down tempo, balearic, and mystical ballad. Sounding like a ship moving slowly, but fiercely toward unexplored territories. The toms resemble a voice coming up from the depth of the sea, the pads like fluffy clouds reflecting off the waves. Massimiliano Pagliara is on remix duty, blowing on the sails and taking the ship into a cosmic expedition. This is deep and dreamy house music with cascading string lines combining effortlessly with hypnotic drums.
A driving arpeggio melts sweet and delicate with celestial strings, dreamlike vocals and breezy percussions in Cuban Omelette. While John's Job is a vivid dialogue between hand percussions, echoed toms and a sturdy baseline.

Rothmans is back once again with his Aussie teammate Dawn Again, supported by a first appearance from Leeds legends Clandestino. EP opener 'Cobblejam' is nothing short of first class, a worthy and chugging Italo powerhouse that leaves absolutely nothing to the imagination. The B-side finds us with the strangely named 'Woman For A Day', though there's nothing strange about the track itself, a deep and dark cut that slowly drives forward into the abyss. Finishing off the record is an excellent remix from the lads over at Clandestino, their 'Dessert Trance' vibe brings the record together as sweetly as Pele brought together that 1970 World Cup Winning team.

Here he presents his debut album, a set that appears exactly 20 years on from the release of his debut 12". For this third outing on the acclaimed Japanese label, they wisely showcase the subtle variety within their always atmospheric and melodious productions. In practice, that means hazy, tropical-tinged dream house opener "Comfort Zone" - as languid, loose and snuggly as anything the duo has released to date - being followed by the dubbed-out, late night hypno-house vibes of "Educate The Heart". They then break up the beats a little on the brilliant dub house/jazz house fusion of "Pressure". In other words, it's another must-have EP from the Kiwi twosome.

Review: Creative Swing Alliance member Pablo Valentino has a strong track record when it comes to solo productions - see his fine EPs on Endless Flight and Faces Records for proof - so you'd expect this outing on MCDE to hit the spot. It does, of course, despite being the producer's first solo outing for nearly four years. Highlights wise, we're really loving the deep, loose and languid, jazz-funk influenced shuffle of "My Son's Smile" and the woozy, electric piano-driven instrumental hip-hop deepness of "Good Ol' Days", though the slightly more driving and percussive club cut "Atlantic's Calling (One For Portugal)" is also superb. For the first release on Version Galore, the Stockholm-based producer serves up two killer interpretations destined for peak-time plays. On the A-side you'll find "Go Get It", a brilliantly bumping and groovy re-arrangement of a punchy, horn-heavy disco funk jam that makes much of the original's winding synth solos and jazzy backing vocals. Review: REPRESS ALERT: relik returns with a repackaged edition of one of the catalogue's most treasured releases. "Overcome" and "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)" need little introduction, and now come sporting the new TR11:11 matrix number. Written and produced by Thomas Melchior and Baby Ford aka Soul Capsule, these tracks came from one of the many sessions recorded at the West London Ifach Studio in 1999. On the A Side "Overcome" is stripped back and energetic, driven by rolling and shuffling garage style beats, tight bubbling bass and atmospheric synth pads. The intermittent vocal samples and the release's signature organ set you up for the flip, "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)". Possibly one of house music's most emotive pieces, the track builds slowly with the introduction of each part building a story of soulful optimism based around a sparse palette of deep synths, uplifting keys and warm analogue bass. The understated beauty of the main vocal riff never seems to grow old or tired with the track lending itself perfectly to either main room, peak-time play or after-hours sessions alike. Remastered by Rashad at D & M.

Review: Having made his debut on Kompakt with "Out Of Time" earlier this year, the legendary Sasha now breaks the seal on another prominent German label: Watergate. Flexing his darker technoid muscles, both "Gameovr" and "Trigonometry" are proud late night stampers that twist, weave, spell-bind and hammer in equal measures. The latter is exceptionally spellbinding thanks to its epic 10+ minute weave. Remix-wise we're spoilt rotten as Cassy punctuates "Gameovr" with pile-driving beats and La Fleur refixes our focus on a warmer, housier side to "Trigonometry". Play again?

Review: 2DeepSoul are the core crew behind Inner Shift music, so as you might expect they've got a keen instinct for the finest strains of pure deep house as you'd happily dig from the likes of Patrice Scott or Fred P. They open up the Windows EP with the dreamy haze of "Clarity" before "Contour Lines" brings a pulsing, techy lead into the mixture of sweeping pads and snappy beats. "Someday" is a rich, harmonious ambient excursion, and then "It's A Sign" finishes the EP off with a truly meditative trip for the smoothest deep house cruisers to lock onto.

Review: Michael James strolls up to Constant Black with yet more of that refined minimal house goodness, throwing down all kinds of late night freakery to get bodies moving in the club. "Angels" is utterly funky without having to spell it out, keeping the drums simmering at a micro level and using a haunting vocal thread to fill out the space. "Seven" meanwhile is a busier affair, bustling with rhythmic accents that bring a very different kind of funk to the party. "Flightmode" then sends the EP on its way with an uplifting cut that sounds as though it came from above the clouds.

Review: When the admirable Jazz & Milk label launched its 12" Jams series last month, it was with an EP that brought together label boss Dusty and long-time pal Sam IRL. For volume two, the latter has gone solo. In many ways, "You Don't Feel Enough" is an echo from the past, featuring as it does skipping, West London style broken beats, raw analogue bass and some killer jazz-funk instrumentation. Yet that style has been making a comeback in recent times, and the track has a similar vibe to recent EPs from Kaidi Tatham, Dego and the rest of the 2000 Black crew. On the flipside, German heavyweights Session Victim deliver their interpretation, which re-casts the track as a drowsy and jazzy chunk of wavy deep house.

Review: Hailing from Argentina but deeply connected to the European way of crafting beats, Nektar Agu follows up on excellent appearances on Tied, Delight_Rec and Osmosis to drop this stunning three tracker for The Untold Stories. The original mix of "Seiya" is a haunting, engrossing piece embellished by Cossmos' expressive keys that saunter over the top of crisp minimal rhythms. Pheek then remixes the track and turns in one of his understated masterclasses, keeping the core feel of the source material while presenting a smooth, subtle listening experience. "Progression Minor 251" gives Agu a chance to show off more of his production chops, with Cossmos once again flexing some magic keys over the top of the slender drums.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Australia is known for its Sydney Opera House, Great Barrier Reef, the vast desert wilderness and unique animal species including kangaroos and duck-billed platypuses; but is also known for its well-crafted music output and deep love for optimistic sensual tunes. This is the case here with the first release of a mysterious project called Ponzu Island, there is absolutely no info available on the artist, so let your ears judge without prejudice. His first effort comes in the form of a 3 track EP including "Super Koto", "Ponzu Beach" and "Ponzu Logic", they sound like if Morgan Geist and Todd Terje took some acid and locked themselves in a room with a sea view, a synth, and a computer. Welcome to Ponzu Island.

To complete the EP the label counted with Andras Fox, another Aussie who has already gained much respect for his simply-perfect micro house productions (btw don't miss his live set if you ever have the chance). Andras revisits the track "Super Koto" in the form of an extended mix with a slower bpm and his magic touch here and there. On the flip side Apersonal's local producer Trujillo does his usual thing remixing "Ponzu Logic", closing the EP into a deep and darker territory. By now you will be in the middle in the desert asking yourself how you got there..

  9. Kuniyuki & Jimpster - "Kalima's Dance" (Sprinkle Deeperama)
Review: Prolific Japanese producer Kuniyuki Takahashi has long been renowned as one of house music's most enthusiastic collaborators, so it seems fitting that his latest album is made up entirely of joint productions. It's a blueprint that guarantees a string of successes, from the jammed-out afro-funk of "Groove Chase" (which is also reinvented by co-producer DJ Nature as a broken jazz-funk bomb) and loose, languid jazziness of "Session North No. 1 (Vakula Version)", to the synth-laden jazz-funk brilliance of "Moving Minds" (a hook-up with K15) and the musically rich deep house bliss of Jimpster collaboration "Kalima's Dance". The latter is also given the remix treatment by DJ Sprinkles, whose sublime version is naturally deeper than the Pacific.

Review: The third volume in the Dance 2017 series is notable for featuring the first collaborative production from Giles Smith and James Priestley under the Secretsundaze moniker. Given that they delivered their first combined mix CD some ten years ago, "Motorway" has been a long time coming. It's also rather good, offering a hypnotic and wide-eyed blend of urgent, 128 BPM percussion, car horn style synth stabs, heavy bass and swirling string loops. It's not exactly Kraftwerk's "Autobahn" for the tech-house generation, but we sense the Robots would approve. Less surprising is Palm Trax's "Outflight", a positive and melodious chunk of synthesizer-heavy deep house goodness full of new age melodies, darting synth-bass and crunchy drum machine hits.

Review: LNS and DJ Sotofett clearly enjoy working together. "Jugando Con Fuego" is their second collaborative single in the space of six months for Sotofett's left-of-centre Wania imprint. As you'd expect from the eccentric Norwegian, each of the four available versions is notably different from the others. So, while the A-side "Club Mix" is a thrillingly loved-up, glassy-eyed trip into Latin-tinged Italian dream house territory (think Morenas covering Keys & Tronics Ensemble's "You x Me"), the "Cosmix" take is the kind of deep space ambient you'd once have expected to hear from Pete Namlook. Similarly, the tribal style "Percussion Mix" is entirely different in tone to the piano-driven "Sunrise Mix", which sounds like a long lost ambient house classic.

Review: Since returning to action a couple of years back following a near two-decade hiatus, 1990s deep house survivor Ewan Jansen has barely put a foot wrong. With this in mind, it's perhaps unsurprising to find that this outing on IILE is packed full of evocative, melodious and floor-friendly gems. The Australia-based producer begins in confident mood via the darting synth bass, sun-kissed chords and melodious positivity of the wonderful "Reefing 101", before exploring slightly deeper pastures on the huggable warmth of Motor City influenced bumper "The Blackhawks". On the flip you'll find the Larry Heard style lusciousness of "Twinpole" and "Swarbourne", a jazzy and percussive workout smothered in deep space chord progressions. All killer and no filler: job done.

Review: Of all DJ duos currently operating in British dance music, Belfast boys Bicep might be the hardest to pin down (Optimo aside, of course). Certainly, this debut album is not easy to pigeonhole, though it is an enjoyably cohesive listen. This is largely down to two factors; the frequent use of deliciously colorful and loved-up synthesizer parts, and the duo's innate ability to utilize beats tailor-made for dancefloor devastation. So while keen dancefloor historians may notice sly (and not so subtle) nods to '89 rave, U.S house and garage, Italo-disco, late '90s progressive house, jungle and early British hardcore, the album never sounds anything less than a fine set of Bicep tracks. Expect it to be one of the biggest albums of the year.

  3. Make Love (6:30)
  4. Magic City (5:51)
Review: On the two releases we've heard to date, Cody Currie has barely put a foot wrong, delivering a string of tracks that brilliantly join the dots between dusty, soul-flecked U.S deep house and hip-hop style sample-based beat jams. For this outing on Razor 'n' Tape Reserve, he applies the same approach to the world of disco and boogie. So, we get the rolling, sun-kissed warmth and gentle filter tweakery of wide-eyed disco house shuffler "Movin' Smoke", the slack-tuned jazz snares, swirling chords and bubbly synthesizer samples of "Infinity I & II" and the swirling, string-drenched orchestral disco-house bounce of "Magic City". Arguably best of all, though, is the more driving "Make Love", where Currie's ability to select and manipulate samples within a bumping deep house framework is best exemplified.

Review: The second album from fast-rising French producer Folamour follows the formula explored on his previous Moonrise Hill Material releases, with the producer accompanying a range of dusty, sample-heavy deep house treats with a smattering of soulful and evocative, MPC style beat workouts. Happily, there's little in the way of flabby filler, just a wealth of material heavily influenced by soul, jazz and disco. Highlights include, but aren't limited to, the huggable, head-nodding hip-hop soul of "Kickflippin' That Stuff", the woozy electronic jazz of "Jah Love", the Theo Parrish/Andres style warm and jazzy house of "Look At Me Or I'll Steal Your Eyes" and the full-throttle, disco-house hustle of "Ivoire".
