Benediction
Benediction (splattered vinyl 12")
Cat: HOTC 025GOLD. Rel: 25 Nov 21
  1. Benediction (6:47)
  2. Benediction (dub) (5:43)
  3. Forward Motion (MK Reverse mix) (6:02)
Review: Back in 2013, 'Benediction' marked a real high water mark for Lee Foss, Jamie Jones and their label Hot Creations. It was a perfect crossover tune that pre-dated the dance-pop-house explosion that followed. It's got breezy pool-side chords, emotive and heart felt vocals and a bassline that defined every Hot Creations record for years after. It gets a special press here on gold vinyl, and it is still as warm and lovable now as it ever was. A dub is also included and closing out the package is 'Forward Motion' (MK Reverse mix) which is a sleazy and dirty house tune with tumbling chords and jacked up drums to get the crowd pumping.

Dubplate #2: Do/Don't
Cat: MYD 002. Rel: 06 Dec 21
  1. Istanbul (4:36)
  2. Pablo's Dog (4:11)
  3. Stateless (8:22)
  4. Do/Don't (4:05)
Review: London's Mysticisms imprint reissues a 1993 release by enigmatic Manchester quartet B:dum B:dum Sound. Merging their backgrounds in post-punk through dub and their city's vibrant dance scene, their sole 12" (originally funded by the Bolton Art Council) incorporates samples, sound design and middle eastern influences on what is now a cherished item among diggers and earning exorbitant amounts on the secondhand market. From the bass-driven exotic enchantment of 'Istanbul', they take a slow-mo version of bleep and mix it with dub techno on the mesmerising groove of 'Stateless' (which was well ahead of its time) as well as the deep dub of 'Do Don'ts' providing perfect armchair riddims.

Multitrack Reworks Vol 1
Multitrack Reworks Vol 1 (hand-stamped 12" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: MT 001. Rel: 29 Nov 21
  1. Clouds (7:11)
  2. Slave (6:08)
Review: Multitrack Reworks is a new label that will be putting out limited edition, hand-stamped white label 12"s that are made from reworked tunes that have been constructed from the original multitracks. Kicking off the first one is the queen of soul that is Chaka Khan and a version of 'Clouds' with nice loose drums, big string builds and a silky vocal. Flip it over and you will find a brilliantly dynamic and funky new take on the most classic Grace Jones jam, 'Slave To The Rhythm.' It's packed with plenty of rich instrumental licks, a flamboyant sense of melody and of course Grace's own seductive voice.

  9. Tavares - "I Wanna See You Soon" (3:47)
  10. Brass Construction - "Now Is Tomorrow (Anticipation)" (5:58)
Review: Despite the universal imposition of lockdown, DJ Harvey's Mercury Rising nights have made a lasting impression on one particular Ibizan hideaway - the world-renowned rock n' roll themed hotel, Pikes, a favourite of Ibiza titans Fatboy Slim and Patrick Topping. To keep the spark of this monthly party alive, Harvey launched his 'Mercury Rising' compilations, putting only the best of Ibiza's balearic talents on display. The third and final volume is now finally in our mitts, and what an impressive array: odysseys of aquatic, twanging sound come courtesy of choice cuts by local mainstays Kraak & Smaak, Project Sandro and MODE.

  2. Look In Your Eyes (Silverlining remix) (7:03)
  3. Look In Your Eyes (Sweely remix) (5:15)
  4. Look In Your Eyes (Politics Of Dancing & Djebali remix) (7:46)
Review: Sheffield based Tommy Vicari Jnr's chunky, tribal and vocal house tune 'Look In Your Eyes' has been big ever since it surfaced in 2004, and it still gets great crowd reactions to this day. Politics Of Dancing now re-issue it with a fine selection of new remixes. The original still sounds future with its silky synths and metallic drums, and the bassline really is killer. Silverlining steps up with a 90's house version that is all slick electronic funk. Sweely then speeds it up further, allowing the original vocal to really tug at the heart strings. Politics Of Dancing & Djebali link for a final stripped down version that is deep as you like.

In The Fast Lane
Cat: VLM 004. Rel: 22 Nov 21
  1. Jean-Luc Ponty - "In The Fast Lane" (4:09)
  2. Opolopo - "In The Fast Lane" (6:13)
Review: French jazz-funk experimentalist Jean-Luc Ponty was already a quarter of a century into his career when he recorded 'In The Fast Lane', a genuinely brilliant synth-heavy workout that added trademark violin refrains to a staccato drum machine rhythm and bold, bubbly waves of synthesizer. The record became something of an anthem in the techno clubs of Detroit on its 1989 release, while also inspiring jazz-dancers at Gilles Peterson's legendary Dingwalls sessions. Here the track gets a deserved re-release as a 12" single, with extensive sleeve notes courtesy of the man himself. This time round, there's also an inspired cover version from Opolopo, who re-creates Ponty's famous synthesizer riffs, jams out colourful new solos and adds them all to a non-stop house beat that's as infectious as they come. Simply superb.

All Night Brotherhood
Cat: PALP 001. Rel: 02 Dec 21
  1. Brotherhood (6:56)
  2. All Night (5:54)
  3. All Night (Scruscru remix) (6:08)
Review: After spending much of the last few years hopping between various high-profile, much-loved imprints (Local Talk, Lazy Days and Apparel included), Ludovic Lllorca AKA Art of Tones has decided to launch his own label, PALP. His debut release on the freshly minted imprint is as good as you'd expect. A-side 'Brotherhood' is a low-slung, peak-time-tempo disco-house chugger, with simmering strings and heady disco loops rising above rock-solid beats and a sleazy, punk-funk style bassline. 'All Night' is a more up-beat and fizzing chunk of disco-house goodness full of jazzy, loose-fingered bass guitar and funky electric guitar licks, while Scruscru's accompanying remix is a looser, jazzier and more organic-sounding interpretation full of mazy organ motifs and Kaidi Tatham style jazz-funk synths.

Clasico EP (limited translucent green vinyl 12")
Cat: RNTR 041GREEN. Rel: 30 Nov 21
  1. Strings Of The Afterlife (7:01)
  2. The Fall Of A Withered Empire (5:40)
  3. Clasico (7:26)
  4. For Julia Y Luis (4:53)
Review: Man-of-the-moment Felipe Gordon was little more than a Columbian producer with promise when he first appeared on Razor N Tape Reserve back in 2019. It's therefore nice to see him back on the Brooklyn-based imprint two years on. Those who've followed Gordon's career of late will know what to expect - namely heady, musically rich dancefloor workouts that join the dots between deep house, nu-disco and jazz-funk. Opener 'Strings of the Afterline' is pleasingly hazy and dreamy whilst boasting Gordon's usual synth-heavy squelch, while 'The Fall of a Withered Empire' is a rare vocal number with a deep jazz-house feel. Elsewhere, 'Classico' is a bouncy, classic-sounding deep house bounce-along rich in sparkling synth riffs, while 'Julia Y Lewis' is a more languid and laidback chunk of jazz-sampling, funk-fuelled deep house haziness.

  4. 4 (6:27)
Review: Last seen sharing vinyl space with 100Hz and Voightmann on his own E Numbers imprint a couple of years back, Bobby O'Donnell resurfaces via a collaborative outing with Reeshy, a fellow Leeds resident who is seen by many as a rising star of the Yorkshire scene. In keeping with the PILOT label's breakbeat-driven, retro-futurist feel, each of the four cuts on show doff a cap to turn of the '90s rave culture. This is arguably best exemplified by weighty, funky and spacey bleep & breaks jam '2', though the arguably even more sub-heavy, UK garage influenced opener '1' comes a close second. Elsewhere, '3' delivers subtle nods towards Rob Gordon and Richard H Kirk's short-lived XON project (look it up, kids) while '4' is an acid-flecked warehouse shuffler.

Cruise Music Vinyl Jams Vol 4
  1. Angelo Ferreri - "You Can Do" (6:38)
  2. Mark Funk & Danny Cruz - "Little Bit Of Love" (5:34)
  3. Patrick Wayne, DJ ThreeJay - "Saturday Vibes" (6:45)
  4. Super Drug - "Jump" (5:04)
Review: As if you needed to be told, Cruise Music likes to keep the grooves smooth and sunny, and here they come with volume four. Leading the charge on this VA 12", Angelo Ferreri gets into a proper funky house mode with the snappy, subtly pumping 'You Can Do', while Mark Funk and Danny Cruz have fun with some Latin piano chops and a catchy vocal. Patrick Wayne and DJ Threejay aren't holding back on the samples as they whip up a surefire party starter with the weekend in mind - 'Saturday Vibes' is going to get all manner of dancefloors peaking hard. Super Drug finishes the record off with 'Jump', which leans in on a snappy dabke string hook over a perfect house lick.

  8. Lac De Marcenay (8:12)
Review: Locklead has been laying down classy house music for the likes of Pleasure Zone, Rawax, Unknown To The Unknown and Hot Haus, so you know he means business. After this sterling run of singles he's stepping to Up The Stuss with his debut album Square One, which deals in eight richly rendered cuts of contemporary tackle that sum up everything he's achieved to date. There's a pervasive deepness at work on 'Light Of Day' which draws you in from the get-go, while 'Bumpin' Headz' revels in shimmering, bouncy chords and Detroit flavoured strings pads. 'Hunting' has a more inquisitive quality as it courses through minimal-tinted grooves and synth riffs, while 'Plants & Astronauts' takes a more cosmic approach to the tech house formula. We could go on but you get the idea - this is house music through and through, presented in pristine technicolour for maximum satisfaction.

  4. See Line Woman (Karizma Last 1ne dubstrumental) (6:04)
Review: There's currently a vogue for modern artists reworking the work of soul legends. One of our favourites from said crop has to be this 12" by nu-jazz and broken beat mainstay Atjazz, whose latest efforts come in the form Nina Simone cover, 'See-Line Woman'. Working with Dominique Fils-Aime - a Montreal singer-songwriter noted for taking inspiration from soul icons from the 40s and 60s like Simone and Billie Holiday - the result is a smooth, subdued take on the original Simone B-side. Happier light is shed on a song that originated as a 19th-Century African American folk song for sailors and sex workers.

  2. Running Out Of Thyme (6:34)

  4. Pickled Beets (6:47)
Review: When cult Canadian Akufen (which is, fact fans, a phonetic spelling of acouphene, the French word for tinnitus) releases music, it doesn't hang around long. And it has been that way for decades now. This new one on Ourway will surely keep up that long tradition, offering as it does more timeless house minimalists and studio trickery. 'The Arising Of The Phoenix (In Memory Of Mark Bartissol)' is a deep house groove with heavenly melodic loops that cast your mind free from this world. 'Running Out Of Thyme' offers a wonky, jerking beat to make you move your feet and the pixelated pads of 'Hey, Rube!' bring scintillating texture, while 'Picked Beats' is a darker, dubbier closer.

  4. They Don't See It (6:06)
Review: Brussels-based DJ and producer Diego Cortez Salas has made some slick moves in the last year or so. He has found himself on quality labels like Live At Robert Johnson, Pets Recordings and Slowciety, and rightly so because his take on house is full of colour and character. Now he lands on Bristol bastion Futureboogie with a more cosmic take that launches with the crystalline leads of 'The Weight Of Uncertainty. 'Gliding Future' is a more frazzled interplanetary sound and the great I:Cube then flips the opener into a deep space and widescreen house roller before 'They Don't See It' closes with a prickly, gurgling techno-disco beat.

  7. David Swatten - "Wave Energy" (6:37)
  8. David Swatten - "Wave Energy" (John Beltran remix) (5:32)
Review: Since launching in 2018, Aaron Andrew's Chubby label has become a trusted - if frustratingly irregular - source of high-quality deep house. Their latest missive, the Aussie imprint's first release since the autumn, is their most expansive yet, with four fresh cuts (each with an accompanying remix) stretched across two slabs of wax. Aleqs Notal goes ultra-deep on immersive and hypnotic opener 'Planetary Insanity', which is subsequently given an equally spacey revision courtesy of Life Recorder. Cheerier and breezier deep house warmth comes courtesy of Jose Rico's 'Agonias' and Leonids slightly darker revision, while Nail's squelchy, early morning take on Ewan Jansen's bubbly 'Basillica' is one of the EP's standout moments. Arguably best of all though is John Beltran's gorgeous revision of David Swatten's brilliantly bittersweet 'Wave Energy'.

  4. Jacob Dub (4:14)
  5. Augustus (2:40)
Review: Persian's close working relationship with the Mysticisms label continues apace with this new release. Titled Dubplate #1: Space Within Art, this latest 10" features more of the artful, mixed up ravey dubbings Persian has scattered throughout his long and winding career. 'Dunya 2' is a potent club stepper rolling at 150 with plenty of system pressure folded into its bones, while 'D Dub Retwist' drops down into a rolling breakbeat skunk-out peppered with sample snatches and a hefty sub line. 'Space Within Art (Dubplate Mix)' takes on a more worldly, wiggy stance dripping in 90s pop-dance magic. 'Jacob Dub' gets into a positive skank and 'Augustus' cools things down with a more roots-minded excursion clearly doffing its cap to one Mr Pablo.

Review: Glenn Davis is well known and loved by fans of deep, vibey house music. He has served it up on F*CLR MUsic as well as Deeper Groove before now, and that is where reruns for this new EP. 'Make It Happen' is a vibrant track with crowd noises, heartwarming chords and nice smooth grooves all sure to get people on the floor. 'Hold Tight' then sinks in a little deeper, with balmy pads and wet finger clicks all warming the cockles. On the flip, the party mood picks up a little with 'This Is A Happening' (North Street West City Of Angels remix) which is all dancing drums and chords, and a second remix which is a dubbed out take.

Review: Originally dropped mid-summer as a digital release, the quality on this remix package from The Sunburst Band was just too good to keep off wax. First up, bandleader Dave Lee himself steps up with a 'Jazz Funk Renaissance' version of 'Listen Love' which frames Wayne Hernandez's stirring vocal turn with molten Rhodes and wah-wah guitars aplenty. Then the Louie Vega-Josh Milan dream team come correct with two spellbinding versions that speak to their prowess in the field of live, deeply rooted house music. For good measure, Lee rounds things off on the B2 with a 'Flute Reboot' for those who just want to zone in on the groove.

Review: Moscoman's Disco Halal welcomes back the much loved Berlin-based artist Budakid for a second outing. It is another idiosyncratic take on house music that shows off the producer's master of his synths as well as a knack for kinked house grooves. The title track is a star-gazing affair with dreamy pads and hooks, while 'Over Not Over' offers another melancholic groove with sombre piano chords but rickety beats. There is a forlorn feeling to 'Ochre Tuesday' that's paired with an elastic bassline to great effect and then 'Astray In Woodland' and 'Cosmic Stork' close out with a more rich synth texture and upbeat house grooves.

  2. Push The Feeling On (MK dub Revisited) (8:40)
  3. Push The Feeling On (MK mix 95) (7:07)
Review: The Nightcrawlers' tune 'Push The Feeling On' is one of US garages most iconic. It was a hit on dance floors and in the charts all over the western world and was also what lay the foundations for MK's whole career. The dub version he served up became a signature sound for the producer throughout the 90s and beyond. That original 95 mix is included here and has the yearning vocals pacing about the mix, the snappy hits and warm, fat drums rolling down low. A Revisited version tweaks things only slightly and the Dub of Doom version is the most chunky and paired back of the lot with a slightly dark sense of menace pervading the whole affair.

Review: It has been hard to keep up with the high rate of - high quality - relates from the Shall Not Fade camp this year. They have covered plenty of stylistic ground and now offer up a bit of everything from the ever relabel London-based producer Lawrence Guy. His today 10" opens with a big bit of celebratory, hands in the air house. 'Your Good Times Are Here' has subtle acid, happy chords and driving drums that all equate to a breezy and feel good dynamic. 'I Know You Feel Sad' is a sombre interlude with heartbroken chords and vocal snippets next to lingering trumpet motifs and 'Yeh Good, You?' then gets back to building good house vibes. A second tender piece comes in the form of 'Mutual Disappointment Is A Terrible Thing' and its plaintive pianos.

  3. Sarah Tonin (8:35)
  4. I Got It (5:47)
Review: Following releases from Aladdin!, Mathijs Smit and more, Beeyou sublabel Subee comes back once again like the proverbial renegade master with some seriously pumped up tech house that very nearly teeters towards outright funky house, brought to you by Aerofunk. But don't be fooled, there's plenty of techy crunch in the drums on 'The Science Of Happiness' to balance out the slinky bass. 'Phone Sex' keeps things saucy and sleazy, with some bright chord stabs and a tough beat behind the heavy breathing, pillow talking samples. 'Sarah Tonin' is another sprightly, playful jam and 'I Got It' whips up a storm of broken beat drums that teases from the intro to the outro.

  1. Tell Me (5:12)
  2. Without Your Love (6:17)
  3. Strictly Business (5:27)
  4. Yukon (4:48)
Review: Clive From Accounts's tunes are as good as his artist alias. For his latest meeting he serve sup a knowing blend of soul, house and disco from across the ages. The relative newcomer impresses from the off with 'Tell Me' which is a steamy vocal over a fulsome house beat. 'Without Your Love' cuts loose on a more heady and cosmic house groove with some gorgeously seductive trumpet lines drifting in and out of ear shot and 'Strictly Business' is fun, cuddly basement grooves for intimate parties. 'Yukon' is a nice fresh breakbeat to up the energy.

  2. Keep Dancing (NYC mix) (6:50)
  3. Cirrus (Delano Smith Motor City Re-Rub) (6:48)
  4. Cirrus (remastered) (6:30)
Review: Before relocating to New York City last year, Pontchartrain invited the legendary Javonntte over to record some material at his east-side Detroit studio. The result was the deep, down and dirty late night groove of 'Keep Dancing' (Detroit mix) while the NYC mix is a more pumping, heads-down affair on an old school electronic disco vibe with a nice dose of 303 acid for good measure. Over on the flip, 'Cirrus' is a deeper, cloudy and synth-heavy house track, which is backed by Delano Smith's dubby and hypnotic Motor City Re-Rub.

  1. Beat Down The Bad (6:00)
  2. Everything Is Fine Up Here (5:18)
  3. Mind Over Matter (7:14)
  4. Sound Of The Lonely City (5:48)
Review: Black Key return from a four year hiatus in style, with 4 sublime tracks from Australian ultra deep house don, Planisphere, aka David Swatten. Following an incredibly well received LP on reissue label, For Those That Knoe, Swatten returns here with more expansive, smokey and utterly consuming deep house cuts, stamped with his unique sound but offering a different flavour from his Definitive Transmission LP - one which immediately stands out from the crowd. Being only his third release in 20 years, there's an understandable sense of anticipation around Swatten's output. This release undoubtedly puts Black Key firmly back on the map, picking up their deserved reputation for releasing only the very best deep house, aimed well and truly at the heads.

Review: A former protege of local legends such as Marcus Belgrave and Mike Banks, the Motor City's Jon Dixon serves up more hi-tech jazz here on the Detroit Get Down EP - on his very own 4evr 4wrd imprint. Features the deep and spiritual house journey of 'On My Own' featuring the inimitable Moodymann & Kasan Belgrave, followed by the elevating techno soul of "How We Get Down (In Detroit)". Over on the flip, we have a couple of edits of the utterly hypnotic "Lisbon Nights" (feat Sarah Elizabeth Charles) with our pick being the Minor Invention version.

Review: Having taken time out from production to create a fine mix for Fabric alongside life partner Octa Octa, Eris Drew returns to action with her most expansive collection of cuts since 2019's Raving Disco Breaks mixtape - a double album that's as colourful and mind-altering as they come. As usual, there's plenty of energy and musical eclecticism on show, with the producer - originally from Chicago, now based in New Hampshire - variously serving up skittish breakbeat house hedonism (the deliciously retro-futurist silliness of 'Pick 'Em Up'), acid bass-sporting synth-house cheeriness ('Loving Clav'), sub-heavy, sample-laden peak-time rushes ('Show You Love' and barnstorming closing cut 'Quivering in Time'), and impossible-to-pigeonhole outings whose ideas and execution are undeniably impressive ('Baby' and 'Ride Free' are particularly good examples).

Review: As the vaults of 90s techno get scoured for forgotten gems, here's a cheeky one from Tim Wright under his Moondog alias. There's an unmistakable touch about Wright's work, whichever name he operated under, but you could easily call this 1997 12" a Tube Jerk release and no one would question it. Skippy, bugging beats with ample wriggling synth lines and a preference for the weird and wonky, this is a very particular sound that should appeal to those who like to keep their sets fun and fruity. Also watch out for Sir Real's gnarly remix of 'Orgy' which turns up the techno heat, as you might well expect from an OG House of God resident.

  2. Go With The Flow (7:05)
  3. Two Foot Terrorist (7:20)
  4. Straight To The Back (6:18)
Review: The Lempuyang label gets off to a strong start by inviting one of the dons of dubby minimal techno to lay down some peerless material. Steve O'Sullivan's Bluetrain moniker is revered by anyone who knows their onions in the annals of UK techno, and he's on imperious form as the Homegrown Dubs EP fires up with the gaseous chord drops of 'Bubble Up'. 'Go With The Flow' is a sleeker, more uptempo affair with a snappy beat to appeal to the DJs out there, while 'Two Foot Terrorist' maintains the pace with some deeper metallic ink bursts for variation. 'Straight To The Back' channels the billowing tones of the A1 into a more groove-oriented form in case you want the tick of the hi-hat to steady your sea legs.

Review: An exciting release this week on Kai Alce's always reliable NDATL Muzik by Detroit techno veteran Claude Young. The Knife is the first time Young has been in the studio in six years and is quite the departure from, say, his seminal Pattern Buffer series. Instead he delves into the more deeper shades of hi-tech soul on this one. We're particularly feeling the soulful and emotive mood music of 'No Regrets' on the A side, while understated B side cut 'Santa Barbara' makes perfect for perfect tackle on the warm-up slot with its a sensual vocals and velvety chords, followed by the late night jazz bar loops of 'The Promenade'.

Review: Paula Tape is a DJ/producer from Santiago de Chile, currently residing in Milan. She returns to Rhythm Section International to follow up last year's 'Panamericana' on the Shouts Vol. 2 various artists release, with the brand new Astroturismo four-track EP. Groovy late night balearica is heard on the opening track 'Body Nature', followed by the low slung and rhythmic deepness of 'Multiverso'. Over on the flip, you've got the title track which is followed by the breezy and neon-lit night drive of 'Eclipse'. Tip!

  1. Hi-Z (6:18)
  2. Warming Feel (6:21)
  3. Impulse (6:30)
  4. Onset (6:37)
Review: Here comes D.A.B., aka Sonodab or J.E.D. Tape, with some fierce new wares for the ever-excellent EYA label. There's a tough 90s tint to 'Hi-Z', thanks in no small part to a chunky bass riff which borders on industrial. 'Warming Feel' edges a little more towards trance, at least that early Frankfurt version of it, in the psyched-out FX that pepper this largely drum-oriented track. 'Impulse' kicks off the B-side with another slice of upferrit rave tackle that puts all the emphasis on the punch of the drums and a bass that'll hook you right in. 'Onset' may be the B2 but it doesn't let up on the pressure, dropping some more of that muscular fare that makes EYA records such a sure shot for those hot and sweaty peaks of a proper party.

Review: Norwegian nu-disco dude Telephones is back with some seriously lo-slung swag on Point Breaks/Beach Breaks 2, on his very own European Carryall label. Kicking off the A side is the Daft party down vibes of 'Another Time' (extended club mix) followed by the spaced-out ambient journey 'Playa De Cochlea (Teleport). Over on the flip, there's more dusty, sample-heavy jam such as the new jack swing of 'Refshers' (Doogie Street dub) and the classic '90s influenced Stateside house of 'Phase Alternate Life' (Steppin' dub).
