HEARLUCINATE 002 (Bum Jump/Tushy mix)
Cat: HEARLUCINATE 002. Rel: 16 Nov 20
  1. Ron Obvious - "Tugging" (Bum Jump mix)
  2. Ron Obvious - "Elixic 3"
  3. Tristan Da Cunha - "Bass Penetration" (Tushy dub)
  4. Freakenstein - "Thafonk"
Review: The second drop on Hearlucinate comes correct with some more of that nasty party-starting tackle you want to make sure you're packing in your utility belt. The 'Bum Jump' mix of Ron Obvious' 'Tugging' kicks off the A side with a cheeky swing, bendy acid line and nimble organ licks to give you a loose and lively 90s flavour, which carries on through to the break-speckled acid funker 'Elixic 3'. On the B side, Tristan Da Cunha gets locked into a tunnelling tech house shuffle with plenty of ruff n' tuff attitude on the 'Tushy Dub' of 'Bass Penetration'. Then Da Cunha dons his Freakenstein alias to slap down the body-poppin', bleep-tastic electro funk of 'Thafonk' for all the B-girls and B-boys.

  2. I'll Take You In (Atjazz remix) (7:21)
  3. I'll Take You In (BDTW Deep mix) (7:01)
  4. I'll Take You In (BDTW Vox dub) (7:39)
Review: Fred Everything's profile may not be as high as it once was, but he continues to serve up high quality treats - as this surprise collaboration with legendary vocalist Robert Owens proves. The latter is in fine form on the EP-opening 'Classic Mix', a warming, musically detailed chunk of vocal deep house positivity that sounds like it was partially inspired by Dubtribe Soundsystem classic 'Do It Now'. Fred Everything also provides two 'BDTW' mixes on the flip: the fluttering synths sounds and vintage Chicago house grooves of the 'Deep Mix', and a more stripped-back 'Vox Dub'. Best of all though is Martin 'Atjazz' Iveson's rework, which recalls the fluid synth sounds, jazzy flutes and intricate percussion programming that marked out his early 2000s work on Mantis Recordings.

  1. Index (7:29)
  2. Ur Host (2:16)
  3. Pitcher (2:29)
  4. Danske Mansus (4:40)
  5. Inter-Oger (4:19)
Review: Here comes the second chapter of Dactylonomy, a 12 inch pentalogy from the weird and wonderful mind of French rule-breaker Pepe Bradock. He actually opens up with one of his more straight forward house jams - a deep, shuffling affair mired in heavy filter use. It's on the reverse that he serves up twisted melodies, jazzy groove made of broken loops and detached cosmic ambient interludes that are awash with gorgeous chords and sci-fi details. 'Danske Mansus' is a highlight with its freaky after party feels, while 'Pitcher' could be a Moodymann jam for the way it is so brilliantly loose and expertly sampled.

Super Blue EP

  1. The Holey Roller (8:33)
  2. Pistachio Day (6:26)
  3. Quiche Lorraine (6:53)
  4. Prawn Galaxy (7:19)
Review: Monsieur Nugget Gene On Earth remains on this mortal coil for at last one more scrumptious 12" on his Limousine Dream imprint. Once again it's a four course session and, once again, there are food references in titles... 'The Holey Roller' starts the meal with a little mid 90s European techno bounce before 'Pistachio Day' ups the energy with a few dashes of trance and a strong hint of broken drums. 'Quiche Lorraine' ushers in the main course; all chunky, wholesome and served at a slower, deeper pace before we hit the final dish; 'Prawn Galaxy'. Silky on the ears, sweet and fishy on the tongue and a whole load of stars to gaze at along the way. Compliments to the chef!

  1. Samurai (11:57)
  2. Samurai (beats) (5:15)
  3. Samurai (Piano) (4:35)
Review: Jazztronik is the free-form music project headed up by Japanese artist Ryota Nozaki. He has put out no fewer than 24 albums since his first in 1999, and in 2005 he put out Samurai. The lead single from that record now gets its own pressing treatment on hi son label and comes with two alternate versions. The original is a shiny, glossy and uplifting nu jazz tune with big broken beats and even big piano solos layered over the top. Some vocal ad libs add a contemporary edge and ensure the whole thing takes off. A more striped back Beats version will be perfect for more serous dancing and the Piano version does what it says on the tin.

Montpelier/Rumex (100 gram vinyl 10")
Cat: TIO S3. Rel: 16 Sep 19
  1. Montpelier (5:47)
  2. Rumex (6:19)
Review: Fresh from delving into his ambient side on the pastorally-enhanced "Loom Dream" album for Whities, Leif revives his self-manned Tio Series with another double-shot of delicate but impactful cuts outside the conventional slipstream of modern techno. The rhythms fall crooked, the synths trickle, bubble and cascade around the groove and the atmosphere remains humid and heady, especially on ear-snagging B-side "Rumex". "Montpelier" sports more explicit dubby flourishes and a spread of sonic flora and fauna in the middle distance that truly brings the track to life.

  21. Yum Yum Head Food - "The Voice Of Experience" (4:28)
Review: Long running and iconic mix series Back to Mine has got a huge coup for this one, with big beat maestro Fatboy Slim stepping up. As always, he invites you deep into his own personal musical world, offering up a view at the far reaches of his record collection. It's a worldly mix for sure, with scorching dub open things up and rolling reggae rhythms keeping you in a deep groove until the soaring strings and jazz-funk fusion of 'The Pink Panther Theme' changes up the mood. Elsewhere there is blue eyed soul, late night folk and low key Americana as well as the original source of one of his most famous samples on 'Take Yo Praise' that all makes for a lovely and intimate vibe.

This expanded edition features remixes from the album which were released shortly after in the same year, available once again on vinyl. From Joy Orbison's emotive and off-kilter rework of 'Love Cry', there's life affirming vibes abound on Floating Points' perspective of 'Sing' and Jon Hopkins' glassy-eyed and bittersweet rendition of 'Angel Echoes' appears alongside the timeless originals. For example, the dreamy sonic tapestry of 'This Unfolds' as well as 'Plastic People' - the poignant tribute to the legendary London club.

Headspace EP
Cat: FD 002. Rel: 18 Nov 20
  1. All We Have (7:07)
  2. Shine On Me (Rollin To Detroit mix) (6:30)
  3. Headspace (5:04)
  4. After The Rain (6:17)
Review: Somehow, Alton Miller is a rather under-regraded, or certainly under exposed, members of the US house fraternity. He has turned out as many essential tracks as any of his peers, and continues to do so here on the fledgling Forbidden Dance label. He opens up with some of his typically musical house grooves, with loose drums, subtle acid sounds and lush melodies. A Rollin to Detroit mix of one of his older tunes 'Shine On Me' reworks it as a deep and jazzy number, while 'Headspace' slows to a downtempo crawl that sinks you in deep and 'After The Rain' explores slow motion cosmic synth work. Perfect.

Review: Icelandic label Lahar debuts with this highly impressive release from NonniMal, who was previously spotted dropping the classy "Freyja" 12" on AE Recordings back in 2016. Sound design is the order of the day on "Eitt" as a beautifully rendered set of percussive bell notes chime around a minimal rhythm section - a piece pointedly geared towards transcendence. "Tvo" has an intriguing slant to its groove, as the sharply oscillating synth wobble juts out against the grain of the drums. "Thrju" takes things in a bleak but captivating direction, while "Fjogur" cools the record down in a cloud of blissful, frostbitten ambience.

  3. The Kay-gees - "Tango In Space" (6:46)
  4. Hutson - "Unforgettable" (part 1) (6:49)
Review: Joaquin Joe Claussell's Unofficial Edits & Overdubs Special Extended Versions series rolls on with a fourth of six parts. It's proven a real gold mine so far, with endless amounts of gospel tinged house and super spiritual grooves getting all who hear it to a high state of consciousness. There are plenty of jazzy overtones to the opener here, 'Come Sunday', which is laden with afro percussion and big horns. It's a steel drum affair on Pheeroan Aklaff 's 'L' that is brilliantly tropical, then there's trident funk from The Kay-gees and a lush bit of fusion from the ever excellent Leroy Hutson.

  1. Expansion (7:04)
  2. Star Traveller (6:44)
  3. Machine Logic (7:51)
  4. Sun Garden (5:33)
Review: It's five years since we last heard from Brad Peterson, but now the former Moods & Grooves regular is back with a new astral traveller for the deep house crew. 'Expansion' opens the Plant Life EP up in style with a sturdy groove carrying illustrious brushstrokes of percussion and keys, all bathed in a hazy glow that could sound transcendental in the morning light. 'Star Traveller' takes a more deep-rooted, mellow path for lounge-ready scenarios where it's the head that wants to be moved by the music. 'Machine Logic' lays down a tougher kind of beat, but offsets it with swooping pads and chords and then 'Sun Garden' closes the EP out in a gorgeous reverie of tumbling drums and lilting flute.

Cat: AXS 2. Rel: 29 Jul 19
  1. Funtema (4:26)
  2. Klub Frimis (6:30)
  3. Teenage Club Fantasy (10:06)
Review: Frits Caroe, AKA Popmix, unleashes some fascinating sounds on his debut release, which should score with discerning listeners looking for those tracks that standout without making a scene. Occupying somewhere between deep house, IDM, slo-mo and techno, there's mass appeal here but with niche noises. 'Funtema' has one of those wasp-in-jar synth lines that threaten to drive you crazy, or at least send the dancefloor into a frenzy, but avoids all intensity, balancing things out with playful keyboards and expansive refrains. 'Klub Frimis' is more of a plodder, its stabbing low end and twisted glockenspiel chords inviting everyone to get stuck in. Closing out on 'Teenage Club Fantasy', a sparse, low tempo acid-inflected epic that never veers from the course it's sets out on, you can have a lot of fun with what's here.

Review: The inimitable Theo Parrish is in a class of one. His brand of music is impossible to categorise as it draws on so many unique sounds in so many unique ways. This new album is another spellbinding affair that takes scuffed up house rhythms and intertwines them with freeform percussive patterns and off-grid synths that get pulled apart then rebuilt before your very ears. It is experimental music with an improvised jazz mindset that can range from complex and dense tapestries like 'Radar Detector' to the more upbeat and playful 'Hennyweed Buckdance' via fucked up drum sketches like 'All Your Boys Are Biters.'

Review: Burnski's Instinct project continues to gather steam with the release of a second album following last year's Still Life, which established the Leeds tech house veteran as a serious player in the new wave of UK garage. The ideas come thick and fast on Point Of View, flowing from the aqueous 2-step funk of 'Pistolwhip' to the 4x4 uplift of 'Sunstream', but the strongest moments come when the sound design collides with formidable bassweight on the likes of 'Select'. This is primarily a collection of club tackle, but it's packed with enough shade and depth to reach beyond the dance for all those other moments when you need a little shuffle in your life.

Review: Watergate welcomes back a crew of regular artists for an EP taken from the 27th instalment of its long running mix series. The Adana Twins kick off with a dark and bubbling minimal house number to set a late night mood then Sabb & Black Circle combine to great effect on the more uplifting, piano laced 'Vega', no doubt inspired by the house icon of the same name. Flip it over for 'Suwedi', a tech house track that traps you in a trance with computer melodies and last of all Emanuel Satie & Nanghiti get all spiritual and joyous with the warm house surges of 'Forever More.'

  4. Track002B (Barut remix) (7:47)
Review: The mystery of the Botanic Minds Sunset Series continues to unfold with another bout of surreal and sensual club tracks that balance tweaked minimalism with a warm and hazy atmosphere. "Track001A" is packed with intricate rhythmic interplay, but it's the fluttering guitar licks and displaced vocals that give the piece its unique vibe. "Track002A" is a remix credited to Eastenderz regular Lizz, and it's a particularly spellbinding jam shaped out with lingering chords and a wistful mood. "Track001B" hunkers down around a low, throbbing bassline, but there's some sweet keys hovering up top to keep things from getting too dark. Barut is on hand with a remix for "Track002B", where trancey undercurrents meet with expansive piano and ethereal ambient swells, all strapped to a sturdy minimal house groove.

That name is mostly associated with super smooth and silky soul, lead by Rakei's own buttery smooth vocals and with lush production that is a fine fusion of R&B, neo soul and nu-jazz. Now though the man assumes his Dan Kyo alias for a more dance effort focussed album on Bradley Zero's Rhythm Section. It makes for a wealth of darker, more driving house tracks with bubbling basslines, gorgeous melodies and plenty of fine instrumentation as well as, of course, some of Rakei's famous vocals. Fans of Moodymann and Glenn Underground will adore.

Review: Luca Murgia is Two Thou - an alias which has seen him land intriguing releases on Burek, Fields & Forests and his own Gifted Culture label. Now he's been snapped up by Uzuri with some star-gazing cuts that straddle broken beat, deep house and something more altogether cosmic. "Clavinet Discourse" is the consummate lead track, a true showstopper with astral synth flex and a sharp, snappy beat. "Talking Song" has a more pronounced deep house bump and leads that wouldn't sound out of place on Strictly Jaz Unit - the dub version does away with the leads if you want something subtler. "Thousands Of Chimes Together" completes the set with a spiritual throwdown to invigorate any open-minded dancefloor.

  3. So Where Are You (Hashish dub mix) (6:22)
Review: Record Store Day 2020 has seemingly gone on forever this year, but that is no bad thing. The latest treasure it is seeing up is this reissue of Corporation Of One's 'So Where Are You' from all the way back in 1989. 'The Real Life' is a seamless fusion of electro, house and something else entirely with its iconic Queen sample smudged and smeared over a tripped out club beat and mad melodic phrases. The title track is a perfect deep, lo-fi and early deep house classic with spine tinging vocals then a Hashish dub gets all new age and nimble on its feet. These are old school sounds but they are still brilliant.

Review: Chaos In The CBD have quietly been building an impressive reputation for some time, with releases on Hot Haus, Amadeus and Needwant all hitting the spot. Here they transfer to Bradley Zero's Rhythm Section International with what's arguably their most mature and musically expansive EP to date. There's a decidedly dusty, eyes-closed deep house feel throughout, with hypnotic grooves laden with all manner of neat, often jazz inspired touches. This is perhaps most obvious on the St Germain style jazz-house goodness of "Observe" - all skipping cymbals, bouncy grooves and killer pianos - but can also be found on the deeper "Observe". It's there, too, on the lilting brilliance of "Midnight In Peckham" - think yearning trumpets and twinkling piano motifs - and the blissful "Luxury Motivation".

Review: Dave Harvey's gold standard Futureboogie Recordings offers more reasons to be cheerful here as The Robinson shrives up a trio of tasty delights complete with a remix from the one and only Ron Trent, deep house pioneer, Chicago great and Prescription records boss. 'Burnout' is a classic bit of superbly spiritual house music awash with spine tingling chords and lush drum work. 'Nightmares' then harks back to early Windy City house with bright chords bringing a churchy vibe and lo-fi, scuffed up claps dancing above a moody bassline. Trent tackles Burnout with far sighted pads and the sort of heart wrenching synths that have made him the legend he is. 'Matrix' is a heavyweight closer.

Review: Apart from the obvious love for his musical talents, both as a producer and as a DJ, one of the reasons why we love Theo Parrish so damn much is his repressing policy. Unlike some of his peers, the man has no problem in repressing in-demand Sound Signatures from the past, and this time it's number 32 that receives a much-welcomed resurrection. The EP features singer Dummine Depores, first on the utterly hummable and soulful "Chemistry" track, and then on "Untitled One", a classically off-kilter Parrish number filled to the brim with sampling goodness and even a distant set of guitar riffs! Killers.

Review: Almost a decade ago, Frankie Knuckles and Eric Kupper launched the Director's Cut project with a re-make of Jamie Principle's early Chicago house classic 'Your Love' (or, to be more precise, Knuckles' 1987 version of the track). Here it gets the reissue treatment, with Knuckles and Kupper's 'Signature Mix' from 2011 - a glossy, loved-up and deliciously colourful affair - getting another airing on side B. On the A-side you'll find two fresh reworks. First, Darius Syrossian strips back and beefs up the cut while playing around with the famous synthesizer riff, before Alan Dixon delivers a chunkier and up-tempo take that makes great use of some of Knuckles and Kupper's wonderfully colourful instrumentation.

Baseline 87 (Sushitech 15th Anniversary reissue)
Cat: SUSH 04.5. Rel: 26 Oct 20
  1. Baseline 87' (6:46)
  2. Musik For The Dancefloor (6:24)
Review: The Sushitech festivities continue unabated with this bittersweet repress of an all-time classic from the much-missed Detroit figurehead Mike Huckaby. 'Baseline '87' ranks amongst his most fabled works, riding as it does around an irresistibly catchy square wave bass hook and one of those no-nonsense beats that the legendary producer did so well. For the sound of Huckaby in full flight though, 'Musik For The Dancefloor' on the flip soars thanks to the interplay between the pads and chords while retaining that steadfast focus. In memory of a true dance music hero, why not revisit a classic that should be comfortably sat in every record bag?

Transparent Thoughts
Transparent Thoughts (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: THL 025. Rel: 02 Nov 20
  1. Transparent Thoughts (9:21)
  2. Transparent Thoughts (Altitude remix) (6:39)
  3. Transparent Thoughts (ThOr remix) (6:35)
Review: Canadian producer Matt Thibideau is a veteran producer who has flown under the radar for far too long, considering the quality of his dub-flecked tech house productions. 'Transparent Thoughts' rides a rock-solid rhythm section, but really it's all about the cavernous splashes of melody that chime out in echo chambers sculpted by someone who really knows their reverb. Thibideau then dons his Altitude alias for a sleeker remix which pares the chords down, re-pitches them and works in some delay for a more delicate trip through dub-tech dynamics. Thule main man ThOr then steps up for a version that edges a little more house-oriented insistence into the groove, creating a more bubbling stew that will go down smooth in an after party scenario or a warm up alike.

  2. It Seems To Hang On (Chris Forman Disco Paradise reprise mix) (9:40)
  3. It Seems To Hang On (Mesmerized Soul mix) (9:07)
Review: 'It Seems to Hang On' was originally penned by what is widely regarded to be one of the greatest singer/songwriter duos of all time, Ashford & Simpson. A bona-fide disco anthem, it has magically colourful riffs and melodies that will send shivers down your spine, with funky bass and guitar powering the whole thing along. On this version, lead and backing vocals were performed by Stephanie Renee and Chris Dockins with two thrilling remixes from Chis Forman bringing it right up to date. These are timeless tunes with a wide appeal that will unite all sorts of dance floors.

Review: Norwegian groove wizard, Sex Tags UFO boss, occasionally known as DJ Dog; Fett Burger comes correct with his most personal and explorative release to date. Thank U 4 Letting Me Live My Life sees the experimental house producer celebrate some of his deepest inspirations across this nine track album. Inspirations such as sinewy, ever-morphing acid (the incredible 13min opener 'This Game The World') sprightly, feel-heavy trance (the cathedral shimmers of 'XTC TWYHTS'), bubblesome good-time disco (the subaquatic finale 'Disco Fem') and classic foundational rave aesthetics (the hurricane synths on 'Atmospheree 2 Emo-tion') Each cut laced with his signature off-grid percussion and that loose natural rhythm, it's one of Fett Burgers juiciest dishes to date. Now Burger off and enjoy your lives!

Review: Lumberjacks In Hell draft in a sublime cast of sympathetic operators for a second volume of From Hell With Love, providing you with eight perfectly formed tracks that straddle the divide between cosy, home-friendly house and dancefloor delectation. Laville's moody vocal turn kicks the record off in style on Austin Ato's 'Control', while Waajeed works his broken beat magic on 'What You Know'. Elsewhere Detroit Swindle bring a tougher slant on soul-rooted house music to the table, while PBR Streetgang aim straight for your pleasure centre with the soaring 'Madame Z'. And that's just the half of it.

Review: For the next installment of Argentinian label Music Broker's tribute series, they have selected some of seminal Parisian duo Daft Punk's finest works and remixes, spanning the last two decades, along with some of the music that inspired them. The Many Faces Of Daft Punk: A Journey Through The Inner World Of Daft Punk features disco royalty such as Niles Rodgers, Giorgio Moroder and Cerrone, while more contemporary producers from the house music spectrum feature also, such as Detroit's Scott Grooves (featuring Parliament/Funkadelic), The Micronauts and Versatile's I:Cube receive de Homem-Christo and Bangalter's midas touch. the latter's 'Disco Cubizm" from '96 being a particular highlight on the remix side of things. Not to mention their roaring rework of indie-pop darlings Franz Ferdinand's classic 'Take Me Out'.

  4. 83 West - "My Sound (redux)" (6:56)
Review: All proceeds and profits from this new drop on Selections will be donated to Black Lives Matter charities, making it an even more appealing offer beyond the sheer quality of the house heads gathered together here. The mighty Kai Alce leads the charge with the sweet and bumping 'Hear The Waves', which is followed up by the punchy but warm 'Furacao Dento' by Demuir. Nick Holder opens the B side up with a killer slice of broken beat house, all crooked percussion locked into a deep, rolling groove. 83 West finishes the record off with a teasing, slow-release heater that keeps the energy simmering throughout - a masterfully executed cut to hold the dancefloor under a spell.

  1. Swimming In Sound (6:24)
  2. Say When (7:04)
  3. Word On The Street (6:53)
Review: The House Puff label started out as a vehicle for founder DJ Steaw's on-point productions, but in recent times he's used it more to showcase the work of other like-minded artists. On this EP, he introduces us to a new member of the extended family: Manhattan-based debutant Coral O'Connor. The New Yorker sets out his stall successfully via A-side 'Swimming in Sound', an undeniably funky tech-house roller rich in spacey synth sounds, swinging beats, oddball vocal samples and undulating bass. 'Say When' sees him move further towards a slicker, smoother, tech-tinged deep house sound, while closing cut 'Word on the Street' is an expertly crafted exploration of the deep and melodious end of the contemporary tech-house spectrum.

  4. Because I Can (5:12)
Review: Hot on the heels of her first appearance on Kai Alce's NDATL imprint, Roberta returns home to Night Moves. It's another quietly impressive collection of warming, immersive deep house cuts from the Brooklyn-based producer all told. It sees her cannily combine organic and electronic instrumentation on a quartet of groovy, sumptuously produced workouts. Check first the bongo-rich, Rhodes-laden vibe of deliciously hazy opener 'Nothing More', before bathing in the chunky, locked-in grooves, spacey synths and raw Clavinet stabs of tidy loop jam 'I Want Cha'. Over on side B, 'You Don't Say' sounds like a classic Soundstream disco-house number with added percussion and electric piano stabs, while 'Because I Can' is another languid, Ron Trent influenced number that sports some seriously good freestyle vocals.

Review: Julien Jabre's Elias Productions returns with this sterling new package from the esteemed French producer. "Samana EP" kicks off with the Levant mix of the title track, which is a bombastic peak time cut loaded with emotional tension and release thanks to a powerful lead that reaches skywards like the crescendo of an unforgettable open air set. "Far At Sea" is a change of tempo that locks into a low slung groove without sacrificing the bold compositional surges that typify Jabre's approach in the studio. Lazare Hoche come on board to deliver an edit of "Samana" that nudges the wild peaks and valleys of the original towards a more steadfast, streamlined dancefloor workout.

  2. Dave Lee - "Power Of The Mind" (feat Billy Valentine - JN Mind Meld dub) (7:03)
  3. AC Soul Symphony - "Manhattan Skyline" (JN Spirit Of 77 mix) (11:08)
Review: ave Lee has collaborated, produced or remixed many vintage soul, jazz-funk and disco artists over the years, though 'Power of the Mind' marks the first time he's worked with Billy Valentine, lead vocalist from legendary soul/jazz-funk duo the Valentine Brothers. The opening 'Redemption Mix' is particularly potent, with Valentine singing his own anti fake news lyrics over a jaunty disco-house groove rich in boogie bass, piano stabs and mazy, life-affirming piano solos. It comes accompanied by a suitably cosmic, synth-laden 'Mind Meld Dub' rework, as well as a fresh string-laden, late '70s style disco track from Lee under his lesser-known AC Soul Symphony pseudonym ('Manhattan Skyline'). It's 11 minutes of pure disco pleasure and almost as essential as 'Power of the Mind'.

Review: Marcel Vogel's Lumberjacks In Hell label shows no signs of slowing as it ramps up a killer new salvo from debutant artist C Scott. "Climb On" is an uptempo workout to capture the absolute peak of the party in the funkiest of ways, while "Hands Free" provides an apt alternative with its slow, organ-led whimsy. Disco remains the backbone of the sound here, whatever tempo the track rolls at and wherever it may head. "Stuttering" demonstrates this perfectly with its heavily treated, head-spinning FX still capturing that classic good-time mood, while "At Ease" finishes on a life-affirming canter of Rhodes led celebration.

Cat: RWX 013G. Rel: 16 Nov 20
  1. Neunachi (13:14)
  2. Detrant (12:55)
Review: Following the skittering, syncopated arrangements and left-handed excursions of 'Aslohop' and 'Detrant' back in September, Ricardo returns to Rawax with two more broken rhythms. 'Neunachi' is a classic Villalobos wonky shuffer with off-grid kicks and a rainbow of wet, cavernous noises. Take away the demonic reverse vocals and you're in microhouse territory. 'Detrant' is a much more driven affair, up-tempo and thicker, electro kicks off-set by a far-away chant. Each cut going the full nine yards; if ever we've had time to truly lock in to Ricardo's famously enduring grooves, it's right now. Neun out of ten.

  4. It's A Groove (8:00)
Review: Sascha Dive has been one of Germany's most deep producers for many years. His smoky, dubby sound is perfect for the more heady clubs, cosy backrooms and intimate crowds out there. Even without club being open, this new one works thanks to its contemplative depths. 'Dub Chronicles #3' is a low slung roller that cannot fail to hypnotise. 'Cornerstone' is more airy and outward looking thanks to the lighter chords, but 'Ancient Tribal Drums' then nails you to the floor once more with some real heavy grooviness. Last of all, 'It's A Groove' sends you home on a sweet one.

  1. Luther 2 (Caserta & The Gang mix) (5:25)
  2. Luther 2 (Caserta & Natasha Diggs Incense dub) (5:32)
Review: Last year Caserta and friends had their wicked way with a classic Luther Vandross acapella, brilliant re-framing the soul maestro in a late 1980s NYC club style. A year on they're at it again on 'Luther 2', which naturally repurposes another superb performance from the legendary vocalist. On the A-side, Vandross's vocal rides a smooth revivalist disco groove created by an all-star cast including Serge Gamesbourg (bass) and Natasha Diggs (piano, Fender Rhodes). It's a genuinely impressive revision that sounds like it could have been recorded sometime in the early 1980s (despite being made during lockdown). Diggs plays an even bigger role on the flip, a hazy and groovy deep house version in which she adds her own sassy spoken word vocals in reaction to the Vandross acapella.

  5. Duck Tape (Goddard remix)
Review: Alps 2 come to Ad Hoc with a sound that will get a whole lot of listeners feeling misty eyed for good times in well-stocked festival tents. There are unmistakable whiffs of Floating Points and Four Tet in the likes of 'Burnt', which positively emit vitamin D vibes out of the speakers, so infectious is the summery mood contained within those luscious synths. 'Arnda E' has a deeper, knottier quality but it's still a resolutely sweet track, while 'Duck Tape' heads into more fractured territory with a chopped up RnB vocal that calls back to the heyday of future garage. 'Empting' completes this effervescent EP with a more abstract piece that showcases the variety at this breakthrough producer's disposal.

The funky riffs are knotted and infectious, the rickety rhythm section nice and loose and the synth motifs all filled with charm and colour, It's a perfectly feel good tune that will make you dance any woes away. On the flip, New York legend and Kind of the Edits, Danny Krivit steps up with an extended edit that is jam packed with noodling piano solos and a more bristling, Latin tinged percussive element.
