Review: John Beltran is welcomed into the MotorCity Wine Recordings family with his sun-drenched and soulful debut entitled "Back To Bahia". Titled after his MCW residency of the same name, the release combines Deep House, Jazz, Boogie, and, of course, musica popular Brasileira flavors to welcome the sunshine into your life. 1. Redeem (5:52)
  2. Riding Light (5:43)
  3. Peaceful Warriors (5:32)
  4. Cosmic Rain (5:37)
Review: The always heady Slow Life is back with more of that otherworldly minimal house music, this time from groove futurist Alex Neri. He toys with silky, serene loops and slithers of synth on opener "Redeem" that don't so much race forwards as tread water in beautifully delicate fashion. "Riding Light" is more of a classic house bumper, with knocking drums and bright finger clicks run through with some mind melting bleeps. "Peaceful Warriors" is somewhere in between, with puddles of synth disappearing down below into an oceanic abyss, but also direct, driving house drums that keep you nice and upright. "Cosmic Rain" closes in playful fashion, with dancing drums and perc so nimble and light-footed you'll be hopping like a cat on a hot tin roof. Pure vibes.

  1. In Two Minds (7:35)
  2. Barge Deluxe (6:23)
  3. Apple & Pears (6:24)
  4. Laid Back Trax (6:52)
Review: Mannheim's Sukhumvit returns after a little time out to focus on brother imprints such as NCSS and Yaji Project, with a release by Mancunian Josh Baker who's on duty for this orange beauty, delivering four fresh cuts for the dancefloor - no remix needed! Four strong cuts on "EP Y": from the ethereal hypnotism of A side cut "In Two Minds" followed by the tough rolling funk attack of "Barge Deluxe" and its subtle French touch (think Djebali!). On the flip, standout track "Laid Back Trax" with it bumpy and swing-fuelled groove hammers the message home in style. Tip!

  1. Neptune (7:25)
  2. Abyss (8:09)
  3. Atlas (8:06)
  4. Odyssey (7:20)
Review: Aze's reissues continue with this latest one from Janeret which actually only came out in early 2018 but sounds effortlessly timeless. "Neptune" gets underway with a far sighted cosmic deep house groove. The keys are soft, the drums delicious. "Abyss" then ups the pace, but stays just as silky and fluid with its rolling final drums and "Atlas" then just things up with a more punchy drum line and busy groove. The trip is completed with the superb "Odyssey", with frictionless drum rotations and balmy, bendy pads all proving irresistible. House music doesn't come more seductive and smooth than this.

A Bit Dandy EP
Cat: HOTC 151. Rel: 06 May 20
  1. Dis (8:08)
  2. LFO (7:00)
  3. Staines Groove (6:37)
Review: There are few more prolific producers in tech-house than East End Dubs. While this itself is remarkable, what's more impressive is the consistent quality of his regular vinyl missives. This three-tracker marks his first appearance on Hot Creations and offers another sign of the producer's growing profile. A-side "Dis" is a suitably celebratory and energy-packed affair, with East End Dubs utilising starry-eyed breakdowns, loved-up vocal snippets and sweaty snare-heavy builds between bouts of bass-heavy, garage-influenced tech-house grooves. Over on side B, "LFO" sees him pepper another booming, bass-heavy grooves with waves of razor-sharp electronics and mutilated motifs, while "Staines Groove" is an undulating affair built around ear-catching acid bass, snappy drums and stripped-back riffs.

Cat: BLACKTONGUE 02. Rel: 28 May 20
  1. Three (7:59)
  2. Four (4:48)
  3. Five (5:29)
Review: Late last year Italian artist and self-proclaimed "black belt ninja" Black Tongue debuted with a two-tracker that genuinely set our pulses racing. Here the man or woman of mystery returns with an even more expansive EP, which we can happily report is full to bursting with tasty treats. A-side workout "Three" offers a fine balance between jazz-funk-fired musicality, quietly impressive musicianship and infectious grooves that make the most of some deliciously loose-limbed drumming. The producer's love of classic house is explored on "Four", where the action revolves around snappy, Chicago house style machine drums, warehouse-ready stabs and an undulating keyboard bassline, while "Five" is a colourful take on jazz-funk/electrofunk fusion that reminded us of the combined output of Dego and Kaidi Tatham.

Want You In My Soul
Cat: SOUTH 007. Rel: 12 Feb 20
  1. Want You In My Soul (club mix) (8:18)
  2. Want You In My Soul (Summer In London edit) (4:51)
Review: Stee Downes is one of contemporary house music's most prominent vocalists and here he lends his silky tones to Freerange, Defected and OM Records associate, Lovebirds for this new one on South Street. "Want You In My Soul" is a mix of old and new, where disco percussion and cosmic synths nestle alongside a mid tempo house groove with plenty of warmth. Downes' vocals are the loved up icing on the romantic groove cake. Flip over for the "Summer In London Edit" - a more stripped back and direct version, perfect for outdoor stages as the sun beats down.

  1. The Robots
  2. Spacelab
  3. Metropolis
  4. The Model
  5. Neon Lights
  6. The Man Machine
Review: 'The Man-Machine' is closer to the sound and style that would define early new wave electro-pop. Less minimalistic in its arrangements and more complex and danceable in its underlying rhythms. Like its predecessor, 'Trans-Europe Express', there is the feel of a divided concept album, with some songs devoted to science fiction-esque links between humans and technology, often with electronically processed vocals ("The Robots," "Spacelab," and the title track); others take the glamour of urbanization as their subject ("Neon Lights" and "Metropolis"). Plus, there's "The Model," a character sketch that falls under the latter category but takes a more cynical view of the title character's glamorous lifestyle. More pop-oriented than any of their previous work, the sound of 'The Man-Machine' in particular among Kraftwerk's oeuvre had a tremendous impact on the cold, robotic synth pop of artists like Gary Numan, as well as Britain's later new-romantic movement.

Cat: FIT 025. Rel: 27 May 20
  1. Exist On (7:01)
  2. Formula (5:23)
  3. Wayne County Stomp (4:19)
Review: After five years of on-off collaborations and side projects, Aaron 'FIT' Siegel has finally got round to making a new solo record. It's rather good, with startling A-side "Exist On" delivering a brilliant blend of breakbeat-driven turn of the '90s grooves, chunky bass, ultra-dreamy chords and the kind of bleeping top-end melodies more readily associated with the early releases of Warp Records. Title track "Formula" moves even further towards bleep techno territory via deep space chords, thumping techno beats, Kraftwerkian lead lines and the kind of distorted analogue bass found on LIES releases, while "Wayne County Stomp" sounds like a mutated, mind-altering cover of Steve Poindexter's "Computer Madness".

  4. The Return - "New Day" (7:26)
Review: 4To The Floor's "Classics" series returns with another round up of must-have U.S house music from the late '90s and early 2000s. Side A is all about disco queen Fonda Rae's Mod II Swing produced 1996 cut "Living In Ecstasy". Choose between the "Groove Mix", a rolling and soulful affair rich in rolling drums and jaunty synth stabs, and John Cicafone's dark, driving and bass-heavy "Ecstasy Dub", which remains a formidable chunk of late night body music. Over on side B, there's another chance to savour Jon Cutler and E-Man's "It's Yours", a gently jazzy chunk of soulful house goodness that was one of the biggest club hits of 2001, and the lesser-known delights of The Return's deliciously deep and dreamy 1999 workout "New Day".

Review: Finding and buying original vinyl copies of Moodymann's brilliant second album, 1998's "Mahogany Brown", can be a costly business, so all praise to Peacefrog for offering up this much-needed reissue. Packed to the rafters with classic Kenny Dixon Junior material - see the woozy warmth of "Sunshine", where a children's choir rides a locked-in groove and jazzy electric piano solos, the sample-laden up-tempo bump of "MEANDNJB" and the sublime gospel house workout "Black Sunday" for starters - it's arguably the album that established the Detroit legend's trademark sound once and for all. When it comes to jazz-flecked deep house shot through with references to the history of black American music, there are few - if any - better albums.

Cat: MYEDITS 001. Rel: 11 Mar 20
  1. Track 1 (6:30)
Review: Another week, another new re-edit series of mysterious origin. There's literally no info about the producer (or producers) behind this particular single-sided salvo, or the source material they've tampered with. Regardless, we'd heartily recommend giving it a listen. Firmly focused on peak-time floors, it wraps cut-up and manipulated female rap vocals over a formidably bouncy, turn-of-the-90s house beat and a rubbery synthesizer bassline so infectious you might need to self-isolate for two weeks after hearing it. This is hip-shaking, toe-tapping, arms-flailing retro-futurist hip-house at its very best: ignore at your peril!

Cat: MYS 008. Rel: 11 May 20
  1. Cassiopeia (9:41)
  2. Cassiopeia (2019 remix) (11:18)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: The Mysticisms label serves up a valuable reissue of the very first release from Nail, the long-serving UK house veteran as prolific now as he was back in the heyday of legendary Nottingham soundsystem DiY. "Cassiopeia" originally appeared on a compilation on Warp, but now it gets a full side of vinyl over which to unfurl its arcane 90s magic. Entrancing synth cascades and stuttering sampler mantras, throbbing b-lines and jacking claps all make for a holy grail deep techno track from the good old days, and Nail has given it a 2019 remix on the flip which brings the spiritual shenanigans of the original into a different kind of meditative, house-oriented context.

  3. Zac Stanton - "Stop Tellin Me" (6:13)
  4. Holloway - "Places To Be" (6:09)
Review: The campaign for real, modern UKG continues unabated over at Instinct, as another crew of like-minded bassbin botherers step up with their own fresh takes on the 2-step sound. Pinder is super speedy and tight as you like with "Forever", while Instinct regular 0113 gets freaky with the subtly tripped out "Hard Lines". Zac Stanton is perhaps the stand out turn on this 12" with the absolutely surefooted and sharply soulful "Stop Tellin Me". Holloway comes in strong on the B2 though, channeling that impeccable Ghost sound for the stripped and spooky "Places To Be". Classy club gear throughout, but especially on that B side.

Review: Seminal reissue alert! Baby Ford had already been a chart-baiting acid house superstar by the time he launched the PAL SL label in 1996. He'd left behind the major label scene and moved firmly back into the underground with exploratory techno releases on Ifach and collaborations with Mark Broom. This new label marked a shift for Ford though, setting him up for the trips into minimalist club tracks that have been his bread and butter for decades now. From the machine soul trysts of "Slow Hand" to the woozy techno thrust of "Tall For His Height" and the atmospheric house wriggle of "Kez", this release is a classic through and through. Beat the sharks and nab a copy of this long out-of-print gem.

Cat: VGNR 06. Rel: 26 May 20
  1. Eschaton
  2. Drain
  3. Venus
  4. Elara
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Vigenere is creating a mysterious vibe with its obscure collaborative releases, but the music speaks for itself as it plots a course through deeper realms of the dance. After contributing to the first release, Malin Genie is back and seemingly flying solo for a more direct trip into dubby techno territory - that's certainly the vibe on opening immersion heater "Eschaton". "Drain" has a more tripped out minimal flavour with the after hours in mind, while "Venus" swaps moody atmospheres out for a hazy shuffler peppered with slices of warm instrumentation. "Elara" brings things full circle with another crooked dub-out to bring eyelids down heavy in a state of transcendental bliss.

  1. Moonspa (7:49)
  2. Haven (6:05)
  3. Simplex City (7:14)
  4. Noga (7:40)
Review: 2019 was a breakthrough year for Adam Longman Parker AKA Afriqua, thanks in no small part to the release of his brilliant debut album on R&S (the mixed-up and imaginative "Colored"). It's a curious quirk then that his latest single features tracks not recorded last year, but rather way back in 2017. It shows a producer trying to take tech-house in interesting new directions whilst still maintaining the club-focused rhythms and late night hypnotism frequently associated with the style. We're particularly enjoying the melancholic, funk-fuelled deep-tech eccentricity of "Haven" and the colourful melodies of the decidedly druggy "Noga", though lolloping and layered opener "Moonspa" may well be the best of an off-kilter bunch.

  3. Distant (5:04)
  4. Slam Deep (6:14)
  5. Channel & Transmission (2:00)
Review: For his first outing of 2020, Kyle Hall returns to the label he founded last year, Forget The Clock, with a suitably strong five-track missive. Check first languid opener "Shark", a splash around in crystal clear waters where simmering chords, luscious pads and glassy-eyed melodic motifs stretch out over bubbly, Latin-tinged drum machine beats and a dubby bassline. Hall makes bolder strides towards the dancefloor on lo-fi house cut "Vexed", before doffing a cap to Larry Heard and Ron Trent on the gorgeous deep house positivity of "Distant". Elsewhere, "Slam Deep" joins the dots between Steve Poindexter and the 2000 Black style of jazzy broken beat, while "Channel & Transmission" is a skewed skip through wonky deep house/jazz-funk fusion.

  1. Hey Ladies (Vox) (6:15)
  2. Hey Ladies (dub) (6:14)
Review: Having recently impressed with a deliciously off-kilter - and hugely impressive - debut album on Studio Barnhus (last year's must-check "Once Upon A Passion"), Stockholm's Bella Boo dons the alternative BB alias and offers up a cheeky, acid-laden future anthem. In its original A-side form, "Hey Ladies" sees the rising star top a sweaty, all-action house beat with dreamy chords, layered R&B/soul vocals, deliciously dirty bass and waves of angular, mind-altering acid lines. It's a brilliant combination of elements all told, with Boo's smart production and on-point arrangement making it a genuine peak-time banger for underground DJs. The accompanying vocal-free Dub Mix is superb, too, with the Swede replacing sampled R&B snippets with bubbly electronic motifs and even wilder acid lines.

  4. Last Dance (Kevin Over remix) (6:43)
Review: Following a sterling first drop from Nick Holder, Selections return in fine style with this EP from Tobi Danton. This is proper deep house in the modern mode - crisp beats and silky smooth synth lines shot through with a spaced-out attitude. Just tune in to "That's Right" and find yourself transported to the dancefloor of your dreams. "1988" is equally light and limber, with a classy vocal sample heralding the Chicago roots of the music, while "Last Dance" takes on a more anthemic tone with its strong melodic core and uplifting bump. Kevin Over comes on board for a remix of "Last Dance" that treats the original with care, edging some 90s motifs, dubby flourishes and a tougher jack into the mix without losing that hazy mood.

Review: Following up some great releases in recent times by tech house heroes such as Mihai Popoviciu, Ryan Nicholls and Dudley Strangeways, the ever reliable Inermu Wax have roped in an all star cast of young guns on their latest various artists EP. Guy Johnson kicks things off with the trippy afterhours minimal-funk of "Close", while Revivis finishes off the A side in style with the swing-fuelled groover "My Bit". Review: Moodymann's oeuvre continues to yield new gems on a yearly basis, but sometimes you've got to take it back to the classics. "Forevernevermore" was a landmark when it first landed in 2000, building on the promise of his earlier LPs to deliver an immaculate trip through the dreamiest corners of his idiosyncratic deep house vision. From the incantations of "Meanwhile Back At Home" to the early morning freak haze of "The Set Up", the quintessentially KDJ 'in-the-room' vibe of "The Thief That Stole My Sad Days" to the heavy edit funk of "Tribute" this is gold-standard Detroit house start to finish from one of the best to ever do it.

Review: Having done the rounds digitally for what feels like an eternity, Roisin Murphy's Crooked Man-produced anthem finally returns to vinyl (it was originally released, with no credits, on Bitter End in 2018. For the uninitiated, the A-side original mix is a near perfect fusion of memorable boogie bass, echoing deep house chords, snappy drum machine beats and clipped guitars topped up with a weary, lovelorn vocal from Murphy that's one of her most impactful and memorable to date. The flipside "Crooked Man Part 3 Mix" is a little less than a total transformation. It sees the Hathersage-based former Bleep & Bass producer place Murphy's care-worn vocal atop a sparse mixture of wonky techno electronics, weighty sub-bass and snappy machine drums.

  1. You! (5:13)
  2. If I Could (5:50)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Joe Corti's latest outing on China White follows the premise laid out by his previous turns - unbridled feel-good house music with more than a little disco sauce poured into the mix. So it goes on this new drop, a two-track bomb guaranteed to set the party ablaze. "You!" is the consummate A side burner - all fever-pitch diva vocals, searing strings and a powerful peak time rhythmic thrust. Providing the balance on the flip, "If I Could" takes things deeper with some smouldering loops kept sizzling under an array of processing without diluting the heavy funk of the groove. Seriously tasteful disco edit tackle right here.

Review: As debuts go, the first outing from Ben Westbeech and KON as The Vision is mighty impressive. With the assistance of UK soul star Andreya Triana, they've conjured up a thrilling debut cut that sits somewhere between gospel, disco and sultry soulful house. The superbly warm and groovy original version - all bold piano riffs, jazzy horn solos, crunchy guitars, rolling drums and sublime lead vocals - is undoubtedly the standout, though the accompanying remixes are also rather good. Mousse T's boogie-flavoured house remix is a great alternative house mix with a deeper and more obviously electronic flavour, while the two Nightmares On Wax rubs are chunkier, sweatier and even warmer with plenty of D-Train style synth squiggles and ear-catching musical flourishes. In a word: ace.

Review: Miles Sagnia has a deep-rooted backstory in the UK underground techno scene. Under his own name and as Miles Atmospheric he's produced consistently compelling techno for labels like Finale Sessions, FireScope, Aesthetic Audio and Applied Rhythmic Technology. Such associations point to the soundworld Sagnia inhabits - a harmonically balanced strain of deep-diving brain food that favours expressive musicality and inventive programming over rigid functionality. Having previously appeared as Miles Sagnia on Ornate back in 2010, he returns to the label as Miles Atmospheric with three cuts that explore melancholic moods through artful interplay between beautifully rendered synth tones and intricate drum machine excursions. These tracks still move with purpose and presence, but the end goal is more cerebral than physical - a perfect fit for the immersive experiences Ornate has always strived to promote.

Review: Romansoff is the man behind Raw Tools, a guy who loves to DJ and arrange parties in and around Bucharest, he is starting to stretch his wings further afield... With a release on Machine Records Inc being his first for another label, Romansoff delivered 3 tracks of dancefloor goodness to the Ruff Draft inbox that made me jiggle in my chair. It was when I got up and started to dance like my dad, and my son started to laugh and point, that I knew it was a winner. I contacted Romansoff who suggested we should have a game of stone, paper, scissors to decide the track order.... and thus Ruff Draft 05 came to be........

  4. Den Haas - "De Beker" (7:55)
Review: A new one from Romanian vinyl only imprint TheSounds, coming at you direct from Transylvania (Brasov). Come get your fix of cutting edge minimal tech house on '006'. On the A side, Johannes Kolter aka Djoko serves up the sensual deepness of "In The Zoo" with its tropical vibe, followed by the glacial back room dub of "Mind Machine" and its strong sense of swing. On the flip, it's over to Dutchman Jack den Hass who takes you deep into the afterhours on the hypnotic "Cardboard" followed by the mesmerising breakbeat action of "De Beker" - which calls to mind the splintered beats of iO (Mulen).

  3. Al Wootton - "Raphael" (5:44)
  4. Eliphino - "It's Hard To Say" (5:52)
Review: Charitable acts carry more significance than ever right now, and Needs are on hand with another instalment in their brilliantly curated series to give something to those in need while also presenting some wonderful, exclusive music. This one leads in with a truly uplifting blast of sunshine from Telephones before dropping into the edgy, swinging tech-funk of Ciel's "Faye Wong Plays The Strings". Al Wootton is on point with another of his fresh and dynamic twists on the soundsystem blueprint, with a dubby, percussive vibe that should appeal to those who miss proper dubstep. Eliphino completes the set with a squashed and feverish garage thumper that sounds like it has an iconic vocalist chopped up somewhere in the signal chain.

Room On Top

  1. Room On Top (7:23)
  2. Fares Please (6:13)
  3. All Change (6:57)
  4. Hold Tight (7:22)
Review: Back in the late 90s, first time tech house was still booming, and Nathan Coles and Terry Francis were right at the heart father sound's best material. Some of it came as The Delinquents, who now get proper and worthy reissue treatment thanks to the always vital Mint Condition label. Their Room on Top EP from 1998 showcased the best of their sound - there's the dark and driving "Room On Top", then the more tripped put and late night "Fares Please". "All Change" gets back to bouncing, punchy drum led business and "Hold Tight" offers a perfectly gooey and woozy downtempo track to get things started or end them in stylish fashion.

  2. A Theory Of Everything (6:44)
  3. Mimico Creek (5:53)
  4. Scavenger Hunt (6:21)
Review: Colin McGraw's MDA Analog project continues to enjoy a renaissance after more than 20 years of silence, serving up the third instalment of vintage techno with a house-spirited warmth. "Lost But Not Broken" capitalises on some particularly soaring synths to create a uniquely uplifting flavour, while "A Theory Of Everything" takes things deeper with dubby pulses underneath an ear-snagging set of keys. "Mimico Creek" has a particularly playful arrangement marked out by nimble arps and bleeps, and "Scavenger Hunt" completes the set with a punchy rhythm section and yet more plush layers of harmonic interplay.

Pusic Records 012
Cat: PSC 012. Rel: 02 Jun 20
  1. Madcat - "In The Morning" (6:24)
  2. Joe Corti - "I Just" (5:47)
  3. Madcat - "House Of Gods" (6:34)
  4. Joe Corti - "Mitchell" (5:50)
Review: Innsbruck's Pusic Records is hardly prolific, averaging just one or two 12" singles a year, but what they do put out tends to be very good. The label's latest missive - its first vinyl outing of 2020 - maintains this impressive track record. It features two tracks apiece from Madcat and Joe Corti. The former impresses on side A with the driving, bass-heavy jazz-house strut of "In The Morning", before exploring deeper, dustier and more laidback deep house pastures on acid-flecked flipside cut "House of Gods". Corti, meanwhile, opens his account with swirling, beefed up, loopy disco-jack ("I Just"), before returning to round off the EP via a more hypnotic, deep and dusty take on jazz-house ("Mitchell").
