Earls Booom!!! Edits
Earls Booom!!! Edits (140 gram vinyl 12" Nachpressung)
Cat: BOOM 1 . Rel: 08 Jan 19
  1. Thank You (6:37)
  2. Badadu (6:12)
  3. D-D-D (6:34)
  4. The Paper (feat K-Tel) (5:15)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Understood to be the work of Earl Jeffers, this fresh slice of white label edit goodness comes with four chopped up jams honed for ultimate dancefloor impact. First up is "Thank You", which takes a tough house backdrop and throws some fiery soul down on top of it in a manner you could imagine Moodymann dropping with satisfaction. "Badadu" meanwhile heads into a more delirious headspace, the sampling meeting with fierce showers of synth FX and a generally raucous arrangement. There are no prizes for guessing what "D-D-D" samples, but it does so with all the fireworks you would want from a house re-rub of such a classic. "The Paper" makes for a fine finishing move with its choppy vocal slices and swooning strings.

  2. Radio Hustle (5:24)
  3. Rainbow Song 2018 (5:03)
  4. Grow (6:16)
  5. Stand Up (6:27)
Review: There's plenty to set the pulse racing on this second vinyl selection of tracks from Ludovic Llorca's debut album as Art of Tones in some 13 years. "Unbalanced Part 2" begins with a touch of tactile, head-in-the-clouds jazz-funk (the deliciously deep and woozy "My Comfort Zone") and ends with a rush-inducing, gospel-fired peak-time sing-along (the brilliant "Stand Up"). In between, you'll find a loopy chunk of tech-tinged deep house hypnotism ("Grow"), a sample-heavy fusion of deep house, disco and jazz-funk (the warm and toasty "Radio Hustle"), and a hard-wired, club-ready revision of 2015 single "The Rainbow Song" that's as rubbery and bouncy as a tennis ball from Bootsy Collins' private stash.

Ephemeral Beauty (Joey Anderson mix)
Cat: LVNO 17. Rel: 08 Jan 19
  1. Ephemeral Beauty
  2. Ephemeral Beauty (Joey Anderson)
  3. Mono No Aware
  4. Down So Long
Review: Love Notes strides into 2019 with a return visit by tape_hiss, last spotted on the label with the on-point Jacob's Ladder 12" in 2017. This time around the Brooklyn-based artist is unfurling twinkling, star-gazing, techno-tinted house to spellbind all manner of dancefloors. "Ephemeral Beauty" is positively sumptuous with its many layers of melodic interplay, giving remixer Joey Anderson more than enough material to work with. Anderson's version plays to his strengths as a weaver of understated, mechanical but soulful techno, setting the scene perfectly for B side tracks "Mono No Aware" and "Down So Long" to explore further avenues of deep, emotive machine music.

Overcome/Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)
Cat: TR 11:11. Rel: 07 Jan 19
  1. Overcome (9:08)
  2. Lady Science (NYC Sunrise) (9:24)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: relik returns with a repackaged edition of one of the catalogue's most treasured releases. "Overcome" and "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)" need little introduction, and now come sporting the new TR11:11 matrix number. Written and produced by Thomas Melchior and Baby Ford aka Soul Capsule, these tracks came from one of the many sessions recorded at the West London Ifach Studio in 1999. On the A Side "Overcome" is stripped back and energetic, driven by rolling and shuffling garage style beats, tight bubbling bass and atmospheric synth pads. The intermittent vocal samples and the release's signature organ set you up for the flip, "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)". Possibly one of house music's most emotive pieces, the track builds slowly with the introduction of each part building a story of soulful optimism based around a sparse palette of deep synths, uplifting keys and warm analogue bass. The understated beauty of the main vocal riff never seems to grow old or tired with the track lending itself perfectly to either main room, peak-time play or after-hours sessions alike. Remastered by Rashad at D & M.

  3. Where One Is (5:31)
  4. Have Fun For A Little While (4:38)
  5. I Can (4:50)
  6. To The Limit (4:11)
Review: Although Ludovic Llorca has released albums under his other production aliases (the most recent being 2017's jazz-funk set "The Garden" under his longest-running pseudonym, Llorca), "Unbalanced" marks his first full-length outing as Art of Tones - some 13 years. While it is available digitally as one expansive work, Local Talk has decided to split the vinyl version into two parts. This first volume contains six suitably warm and fuzzy tracks, most of which are gleeful dancefloor workouts that put fun and positivity front and centre. Highlights include the disco-fired "Keep On Having Fun", the Clavinet and organ-heavy stomper "Where One Is", suitably loopy "Have Fun For A Little While" and P-funk influenced "I Can" and "To The Limit". It's all up to the Frenchman's usual high standards.

Gotta Do EP
Gotta Do EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: IMO 010. Rel: 07 Jan 19
  1. Gotta Do (9:37)
  2. Take Me (feat Charli Umami) (8:52)
Review: Metro Area's Darshan Jesrani has more than proven himself with elegant, understated, disco-infused grooves over the years, so you shouldn't need telling that this new 12" for Imogen is an essential for any smooth groovers. The A side jam, "Gotta Do," certainly aligns itself with the towering legacy of Metro Area in its shimmering synth lines and snappy percussive ripples. However the B side strikes a slightly different tone, coming on more forthright thanks in no small part to the excellent vocal turn from Charli Umami. Both cuts sport the same refined quality you would expect from Jesrani, making this 12" an essential grip for anyone craving deep, sophisticated disco house.

Plastik People Collections Volume Ten
  1. Sinan Mercenk - "Mellow Mellow"
  2. Templeton Peck - "Sweat Mix 2"
  3. Uschi Classen - "Take Me High"
Review: Plastik People are back with another volume of unmissable torch bearers for true-skool garage lovers to rejoice at. Things stride in bright and bold with "Mellow Mellow," which plays a dummy move with its trippy sound FX intro before ripping into a romping, sax-fuelled bumper courtesy of seasoned pro Sinan Mercenk. Templeton Peck takes things deeper on "Sweat Mix 2" - a forgotten gem from the golden age of 2-step. Meanwhile Uschi Classen makes things truly dreamy on the woozy but utterly funky "Take Me High," a seriously deep cut previously only available on white label.

  4. Anger (6:59)
Review: It was way back in 1998 when Boo Williams' "A Little Something For You" first appeared on Chicago imprint Guidance Recordings. Now regarded by deep house diggers as an overlooked classic, it has finally been given the reissue treatment courtesy of Groovin' Recordings. It remains one of Williams' finest single outings, with the warm, organ-rich Illinois deep house and Motor City futurism fusion of "Chi-Town Techno" still sounding ahead of its time 21 years after the veteran producer recorded it. Highlights are plentiful elsewhere, too, with jazzy and chunky deep house number "Fairytale (Pride)" and the cowbell-laden, Cymande-sampling brilliance of EP opener "Jew Dan" standing out.

  2. Niko Maxen - "Silverlining" (7:15)
  3. Per Hammar - "Dynamic Ranger" (7:11)
  4. Ray Mono - "Unplugged" (7:34)
Review: There's much to admire on this second "chapter" of Talman's "Retro Future" EP series, which lands in stores two months after its sold-out predecessor. The title is apt, because much of the material effortlessly joins the dots between the spacey bounce of late '90s tech-house and the rolling, bass-heavy glitch-funk of today's leading tech productions. Chris Stussy steals the show with opener "Atlas", a cut full to bursting with intergalactic-electronics, ear-pleasing chords and glassy-eyed futurist house grooves, while Per Hammar's "Dynamic Ranger" cannily mixes a swirling atmosphere with druggy, mind-altering rhythms. Elsewhere, Ray Mono provides ear-pleasing peak-time hypnotism, while Niko Maxen makes the most of some stabbing analogue bass and chiming, delay-laden riffs.

Smuts (12" Nachpressung)
Cat: BOSS 001. Rel: 10 Jan 19
  1. Smuts
  2. Studs
Review: Hailing from Stockholm, new label Bossmusik launch in style with a tight two track twelve inch from Dorisburg! Perhaps best known as one half of Genius Of Time, Alexander Berg's own releases for the Aniara label as Dorisburg remain some of our favourites here at Juno HQ, yet you can't fail to be impressed by his work here. Lead track "Smuts" is quite magical, maintaining a deepness throughout yet still deviating down various pockets of percussive interest that keep you hypnotised for its near eight minute duration. It's complemented by "Studs" which starts out in fairly stripped back fashion but Berg gradually brings in more and more drums and rhythmic elements with the results sounding like a contemporary squeeze on old Chicago drum trax. Boss music indeed!

  2. Daniel Paul - "First Touch" (6:40)
  3. Phazer - "Racoon" (7:12)
  4. Youandewan - "Pinger" (Goodies edit) (6:31)
Review: We'd heartily recommend this pleasingly varied, all-star affair from long-serving electronic imprint Cabinet. All four tracks are primed and ready for peak-time plays, with the wonderfully hypnotic, deep, dubby and bass-heavy bounce of Youandewan's "Pinger (Goodies Edit)" standing side by side with Noah Skelton's even deeper and groovier EP opener, "Vibrations", at the top of the pile. That said, many will gravitate towards the loved-up, piano-rich rush of Phazer's dream house-inspired "Racoon", while Berlin veteran Daniel Paul's "First Touch" is a wonderfully warm and melodious chunk of spacey deep house.

Review: The seemingly unstoppable rise of Ross From Friends (the producer, rather than actor David Schwimmer) continues via the South London beat-maker's most expansive release to date: a 12" double-pack stuffed full of goodness. As usual, you can expect plenty of samples that sound like they've been taken from malfunctioning reel to reel tape machines, ear-pleasing synthesizer melodies, wayward drum machine hits and squeezable basslines of the sort that once marked out '80s electrofunk bangers. Most of the tracks are in a lo-fi deep house vein (you'll be unsurprised to hear), though there are one or two skewed downtempo diversions that rank amongst the producer's most intriguing tracks to date.

  3. O-Type
Review: Brazilian producer Apoena has been steadily issuing serious heaters for labels like Underground Quality and Stuga Musik since 2010, but the core of his output can be found on his own Allnite Music label. The Nebulosa EP features more of the immersive, shimmering tech house tones he's built his name on thus far, leading in with the swirling wonderment of the title track before swerving on the B side into the more punchy, deliciously dubbed out "Asteroides." Bringing the most overtly house-oriented sounds on the record, "O-Type" signs off on a weighty, head-nodding groove carefully crafted for eyes-closed transcendence, whether you're rocking the jam in your headphones or on the floor.

  4. Henry Wu - "Shahada" (2:53)
Review: It was only a matter of time before Henry Wu and K15 would link up with London's Eglo, and their respective prior releases for the likes of Wild Oats, Rhythm Section and 22a have earned them a spot in one of the finest house and broken beat labels around. "Love's Gambit" is a perfect example of the latter genre, a sublime blend of jazzy percussion swings and smooth melodic drifts, followed by the even more soulful bounces of the gentle "Space & Time" - one for the jazz fusion heads! "The Anthem" heads towards more housey spheres thanks to its stable beat pattern - it-s an absolute peach of a tune, by the way - but it's "Shahada" that governs the dancefloor with its rough MPC drum programming and finger-licking synth rotations. A beautiful and fitting addition to the catalogue.

  1. Perugia 1989 (5:17)
  2. Bella Ciao (5:14)
  3. My Brother, Dani (5:43)
Review: Nick Anthony Simoncino is the perfect choice to add to the ever-expanding Love Notes narrative. His classically rooted, passionate approach to hardware house music chimes with previous 'Noters like Octo Octa and Casey Tucker, and the quality is as high on this 12" as one of his many appearances on Creme Organization or Vibraphone, to name but a few. "Perugia 1989" is quintessential Simoncino - simple in its construction but beautifully engineered with all emphasis on an undulating bassline. "Bella Ciao" is a more tense cut that uses some nervy synth phrases to eke out a trance-indebted mood, and then "My Brother, Dani" maintains the theme with a dramatic use of space and jittery percussion.

Review: Frazer Campbell turns his hand to a fair few different kinds of dancefloor material, but there's a consistent deep techno pulse that joins the dots between, for example, his appearance on Mosaic Records and this sample-laden drop on his own Counterfeit Soul. Gladys Knight's take on "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" gets refigured in the swirling, early morning cruiser "Glad Its All Knight." Lauryn Hill's classic "Doo Wop" gets sprinkled into a sprightly peak time tech house workout entitled "Laurenz Hillz," Alexander O'Neal's "Criticize" features in the sultry "Alexo Kneel" and airy closing cut "Mr Green's Envy" weaves a little Al Green magic into the mix.

  1. Pick Up (12" extended disco version) (9:57)
  2. The Love Truck (9:47)
Review: When it comes to crafting lengthy, disco fired dancefloor treats, DJ Koze has previous form. His "Extended Disco Version" of Lapsley's "Operator" quickly became a White Isle anthem in the summer of 2016, and we fully expect "Pick Up" to be one of the disco-house hits of 2018. Based around spine-tingling samples from a heart-felt, orchestrated 1970s disco treat - think Tom Trago's "Use Me Again", and you're close - the veteran producer slowly builds the pressure before really letting loose in the closing stages. B-side "The Love Truck" is an altogether deeper, dubbier and dreamier affair, seemingly designed for leisurely warm-up sets and gentle, early morning shuffling.

  5. Come 2 Me (instrumental) (3:47)
Review: Fun fact: Andres' first ever remix was done for NDATL. Almost a decade later, he finally returns to Kai Alce's imprint with an EP of his own. It's a pleasingly musically rich affair, with the Motor City producer using the A-side to explore his Latin roots and influences. Opener "Ensolardo" is probably best described as "organic Brazilian house", with breezy, jazz-funk style backing vocals and lilting synth lines riding a densely layered rhythm track. Andres goes even more percussion-heavy on the track that follows, "Cafe Con Leche", which sounds like the accompaniment to a particularly celebratory carnival party in Rio. Over on side B, "D Town Connection" is a warm, synth-heavy chunk of attractive Motor City deep house, while "I Can't Hear You" recalls the producer's sample-heavy breakthrough releases.

Review: DJ Steaw and Gunnter's Rutilance Recordings has been going strong for a couple of years now. Their M.O.? Spreading the gospel of deep house, we'd guess! They're doing pretty well on that front then. Paris producer Janeret produces sexy music for night people. Fans of Dessous or Dogmatik should take note. First track on the A side "Heat" features a bouncy synth bassline and rich synth and pad tapestries reminiscent of UK legend Jimpster. "Straightaway" features uplifting organ stabs and a tough swing fuelled beat, perfect for those peak time moments. On the flip "Surge" keeps on with the uptempo vibe, injecting some vocals, razor sharp synth leads and that bass; so bouncy! Finally he throws us a right curveball with the liquid drum and bass of "Throb" summoning the spirit of LTJ Bukem, and damn well!

Review: The latest missive from the SlothBoogie crew's SBEDITZ series comes from Joe Cleen, a shadowy producer who has previously impressed via releases on the Bordeaux-based Jazz Cabbage imprint. He's up to his old tricks this time round, too, wrapping sharp, ear-pleasing horns and jaunty jazz-funk samples around a bobbing deep house groove on "Give You All I Got", before brilliantly chopping and looping a slap-bass propelled boogie jam on "City Nights". Over on side B, "Dear Lord" is a deliciously deep, piano-and-reverb-heavy take on an old gospel house number, while the brilliantly bouncy "The Fun Part" sees the man of mystery smother a jazzy, hot-stepping house groove with wonderfully fluid electric piano solos.

Review: Presenting a fully legit, remastered and repackaged reissue of this legendary afro-house classic for 2018. The classic "Koro Koro" should need no introduction. It gained fame in London in the late '80s as an anthem of the acid house scene of the time. Released via London's Warriors Dance label, it was subsequently picked up and licensed by labels in the USA where it fell into the hands of tastemakers such as Tony Humphries, Masters At Work and many more - and rapidly rose to prominence in the states too. Essentially "Koro Koro" birthed a new style of house and techno, fusing together tribal, African and percussive elements with analogue synths, street-style drum programming and warehouse attitude.

  1. Bluetrain - "Armchair Analyst" (Special edition dub) (7:49)
  2. Roger Gerressen - "Long Overdue" (7:12)
Review: Steve O'Sullivan's Mosaic train keeps on rolling, this time via the LTDX series which reaches its second station stop with two more dubbed out dancefloor delights for the deepest divers. O'Sullivan dons his Bluetrain guise to deliver the UK steppers-indebted "Armchair Analyst," which artfully folds subtle dubwise influences into its minimal techno construction. On the flip side, Roger Gerressen spaces things out good and proper with the slow-stalking groove of "Long Overdue," fusing the best elements of contemporary minimal and classic dub to create a fine extension of the Rhythm & Sound blueprint.

Attack The Dancefloor Vol 11
  1. Harvey Mason - "Groovin' You" (JN Mason Revenge mix) (7:23)
  2. Al McKay Allstars - "Heed The Message" (Joey Negro extended mix) (7:27)
  3. Lakeshore Commission - "Together (Right Now)" (JN Tribute To Randy Muller) (8:40)
  4. Doug Willis - "Risky Biznizz" (Doug Bionic House mix) (6:44)
Review: For the 11th instalment of Z Records' ongoing Attack The Dancefloor series, label boss Dave Lee (AKA Joey Negro, Doug Willis, Lakeshore Commission and many more) has gathered together more certified floor-fillers from his own personal stash of productions and remixes. His tasteful rework of Harvey Mason classic "Groovin' You" - slightly more housey than the original, but making great use of the original's killer instrumentation and vocals - is particularly potent, while the rolling, horn-heavy Extended Version of Al McKay Allstars' "Heed The Message" is a good-time disco-funk treat. Elsewhere, Lakeshore Commission cut "Together (Right Now)" is a heartfelt tribute to Skyy mastermind and bass player supreme Randy Muller, while his Bionic House Mix of Doug Willis cut "Risky Biznizz" is a soaring, grandiose disco-house treat.

Tuff Cut #09
Cat: TUFF 009. Rel: 28 Mar 18
  1. I Get Deeper (original LNTG mix) (6:46)
  2. I Get Deeper (Cassian rework) (6:16)
Review: Australian techno royalty Carmelo Bianchetti has put out a lot of music under the Late Night Tuff Guy alias with his 2007 tweak of Roland Clark classic "I Get Deep" among his best work. Originally released through the short lived TBot's All Nite House Party label, the track is given a timely reissue through Bianchetti's own Tuff Cut label in newly remastered form. Clark's classic vocal would be arguably be a hit over anything with a 4/4 groove, but there is something satisfying about this grimy arrangement from LNTG. Complementing this is a fresh take on the track from Sydney's Cassian.

Dinosaur Baby EP (feat Rune Lindbaek & Luke Solomon remixes)
  1. Dinosaur Baby
  2. Dinosaur Baby (12" dub)
  3. Dinosaur Baby (Rune Lindbaek remix)
  4. Dinosaur Baby (Luke Solomon remix)
Review: Is It Balearic? welcome the mellow charms of Chris Coco and Camillo Miranda to lay down an unusual paean to a prehistoric love with the truly breezy drifter "Dinosaur Baby." While the tale might be a quirky one, the music is the real deal, all tumbling percussion locked into a slow, head-nodding groove, and this comes through even stronger on the "12" Dub". On the flip, Rune Lindbaek delivers a remix that fleshes the original out with laconic disco flourihes, and then Luke Solomon's version injects a little housey energy into the make up with his usual flair for off-kilter party fuel.

Review: The latest slab from Dutch delights SlapFunk sees a return from regular contributor Julian Alexander. Since he was last on the label, Alexander has been teaming up with Blind Box Series and Rawax, but he comes back home with an assured six track EP that highlights his continued progression as a producer. The release is bookended by short but immersive ambient cuts, with the primary focus being four forthright minimal house burners that continue the fine tradition of SlapFunk as a whole. From the snaking beat and cheeky b-line of "Nibyc" to the hard-stepping thrust of "Asco 52," there is plenty here for fans of the label's sound to lap up.

  4. Burner (Arapu remix) (9:24)
Review: Rising star Camelia has yet to put a foot wrong since kicking off Botanic Minds' excellent Sunset Series in the autumn of 2017. The American producer followed that up with solid EPs on Sports Records and RORA, and here kicks off 2019 in confident fashion. He kicks things off via the undulating deep space electronics, chunky analogue bass and rolling tech-house beats of "Forerunner", before exploring deeper pastures on the lilting late night dancefloor bliss of "Milagro", where echoing piano riffs drift across a starry-eyed soundscape. Side B is all about "Burner", with Camelia's spacey, Motor City-influenced tech-house original version coming accompanied by a bolder, chunkier and acid-flecked remix by Arapu.

Review: Of all DJ duos currently operating in British dance music, Belfast boys Bicep might be the hardest to pin down (Optimo aside, of course). Certainly, this debut album is not easy to pigeonhole, though it is an enjoyably cohesive listen. This is largely down to two factors; the frequent use of deliciously colorful and loved-up synthesizer parts, and the duo's innate ability to utilize beats tailor-made for dancefloor devastation. So while keen dancefloor historians may notice sly (and not so subtle) nods to '89 rave, U.S house and garage, Italo-disco, late '90s progressive house, jungle and early British hardcore, the album never sounds anything less than a fine set of Bicep tracks. Expect it to be one of the biggest albums of the year.

Cat: XEXPAND 1010. Rel: 24 May 12
  1. 1960 What? (original)
  2. 1960 What? (Opolopo Kick & Bass rerub)
Review: US newbie Gregory Porter was man of the year as far as nu-soul and funk goes and championed by the likes of Gilles Peterson,Patrick Forge & Nik Weston to name but a few. This record had an incredible amount of attention around it even before its release and to be honest, it ain't no surprise! It's just a future classic, end of discussion - it takes Detroit's fine soul and funk heritage onto a new level, showing us that classics are still very much in the making. Porter's own voice is majestic and prophetic as he talks about "Motor City burnin'" and who then goes on to deliver his powerful and emotional words. There's even a slightly "housier" remix by Opolopo, giving us the chance to also enjoy this mighty record at the centre of late-night set...this is certified Theo Parrish material right here!

Review: 25 years deep and still sounding as timeless and genre-defining as ever, Trax revisit their 2002 package with this highly limited reissue. Complete with the essential emotive Martin Luther King-adorned sermon, Chuck D's house-proud Jack narrative and Robert Owens deep yearning croons, this is the ultimate collection of versions that rise above the millions of copies and bootlegs and blatant rip-offs this track has endured over the years. An essential addition to all collections.
