SE MKII (clear vinyl 12" Nachpressung)
Cat: PERSEPHONICSIRENS 03. Rel: 15 Nov 18
  1. SE MKII (8:21)
  2. I (One) (5:50)
  3. Surd (8:35)
Review: Persophonic Sirens struck out in bold fashion in 2017, with an inaugural release by the label boss Ancient Methods, followed by Italian Sharplines aka Nathaniel, It is now over to mysterious newcomer Aoud, whose only previous outing thus far has been for Miami based digital imprint The Revera Corporation. It's a collection of seriously brooding and nefarious tracks here: from the euphoric adrenalizer that is "SEMKII" featuring tunnelling arpeggios reminiscent of Vitalic or The Hacker, the dystopian rave terror of "I One" and the slow burning EBM grind on "Surd". You can can rely on these three versatile sonic weapons for various environments.

Point Reyes (hand-numbered hand-stamped 12" limited to 299 copies)
Cat: ALBEIT 002. Rel: 15 Nov 18
  1. No Mercy (5:43)
  2. Cheaper (8:18)
  3. Point Reyes (8:35)
Review: We were blown away by Albeit Records' first release, a killer EP of previously unheard archive cuts from long serving machine abusers Activ-Analog. For release number two, the Bristol-based label has decided to flip the script, offering up a three-track salvo from up-and-coming producer Ismael Zouaoui. The Berlin artist goes straight for the jugular with "No Mercy", wrapping chilling melodies, booming sub-bass and drunken deep space chords around a kick-drum dominated rhythm track, before successfully breaking up the beats on the wonderfully deep-but-punchy "Cheaper". Arguably best of all, though, is B-side "Point Reyes", an impeccable exercise in intergalactic IDM that's blessed with some deliciously jazzy hybrid electro/broken techno beats.

Mystic Versions 02 (hand-stamped 12")

  4. Track 4
  5. Track 5
  6. Track 6
  7. Track 7
Review: It's been two years since Thomas Berg's "Versions" stable initiated the Mystic Versions project, which delivers untitled chunks of cosmic techno goodness from un-credited artists. There's plenty to excite on this delayed second instalment, from the creepy, dub techno-in-the-rainforest flex of "Track 2" and wildly wonky, reggae-tinged heaviness of "Track 3", to the swirling, rising and falling melodies of dense dancefloor techno roller "Track 5" and the ambient techno style early morning psychedelia of "Track 7". Those hankering after some dense and intense peak-time techno should check out the ballsy drum assault that is "Track 6".

Rubble (12")
Cat: PEARS 3. Rel: 15 Nov 18
  1. Rubble (5:42)
  2. Earwig (5:16)
  3. Our Spirits Soar (7:06)
Review: In the lead up to the release of David Kennedy's first Pearson Sound 2018, much attention was focused on "Earwig", a sparse, slow and spooked, TB-303-laden cut that the man himself described as his, "first and probably last acid track". While it provides an intriguing diversion, it's also allows the EP's other two cuts to really shine. "Our Spirits Soar" is a deliciously sub-heavy, breakbeat-powered affair rich in warm, loved-up chords, trippy effects and fizzing, intergalactic electronics. It's pretty tasty, though nowhere near as weighty, intense and percussively punchy as "Rubble", the demolition-themed dancefloor destroyer that opens the EP.

  1. Bart Skils - "West Of The Moon"
  2. Secret Cinema & Reinier Zonneveld - "Pain Thing"
  3. Pig & Dan - "Pushing On"
  4. Juliet Fox - "Wanted Me"
Review: Over two decades into its lifespan, Adam Beyer's Drumcode imprint keeps evolving and excelling, pushing techno forward while remaining wholly respectful of its roots. On Part 3 of A Sides Vol 7, Beyer brings in the scene's top guns to expertly execute some main room peak-time action. On the first side, it's an undeniably Dutch affair with Amsterdam hero Bart Skils stepping up to deliver the deeply hypnotic tunnel vision of "West Of The Moon", while veterans Secret Cinema & Reinier Zonneveld deliver the darkly druggy dancefloor drama of "Pain Thing". On the flip, Pig & Dan should need no introduction and are in fine form as always on the adrenalised "Pushing On" while ascendant Aussie Juliet Fox similarly impresses on "Wanted Me".

  1. Alan Fitzpatrick - "Untitled" (feat SCB) (6:54)
  2. Boxia - "Final Call" (7:00)
  3. Jay Lumen - "Stella Luce" (7:28)
  4. Weska - "Other Places" (6:28)
Review: Drumcode's A-Sides compilation provides a timely opportunity to showcase the full range of its sonic repertoire, with Adam Beyer scrupulously selecting unreleased tracks that have taken prime position in his sets over recent months. Part four of the seventh volume features another bunch of heavy hitters such as UK AM specialist Alan Fitzpatrick, who collaborates with Hotflush head honcho SCB on the furious warehouse stomp of "Untitled" followed by fellow Brit Boxia who serves up the evocative and transcendental groove of "Final Call". On the flip, Hungary's Jay Lumen channels the heyday of '90s trance effortlessly on the euphoric "Stella Luce" while Canadian Weska closes out the EP by taking you aboard an acid express direct into the stratosphere on "Other Places".

Review: Jorge Caiado certainly keeps busy. When not running the Carpet & Snares (and its affiliated shop), the Groovement label or doing A&R for Chez Damier's long running Inner Balance Music imprint, he's releasing some brilliant music - as heard on this year's Choice EP - one of our favourite records of this year. He now presents some new deep space transmissions via his Lisbon HQ, under new alias Conversion here and inaugurating the eponymous imprint. Reflective electro, Motor City techno and beatless trips are explored, dedicated to sonic excursions away from his housier roots.

Dub Cradle (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: PSI 001. Rel: 14 Nov 18
  1. Dub Cradle (5:10)
  2. Slumber Dub (7:04)
Review: In the early years of the century, Jon Hopkins delivered a handful of remixes as Mr. Roque. Now, we're unsure of whether this release is his work - the accompanying info sheet is pretty vague - but it could well be. If it isn't, then the Roque-star (sorry) behind the record has notched up a suitably superb debut. "Dub Cradle" is deliciously deep, with slowly shifting strings, ricocheting vocal samples, reverberating percussion hits and dub style stabs riding a suitably blazed and hypnotic dubstep beat. Flipside "Slumber Dub" is, if anything, even deeper. It sees the shadowy Mr Roque successfully add mind-altering electronics and a dub techno style 4/4 shuffle to many of the musical elements explored on the intoxicating title track.

  12. Screensaver - "Eliminated" (3:55)
Review: Efficient Space's latest essential release sees Andras and Instant Peterson take a trawl through the darker, lesser-visited corners of Australian electronic music. According to the label, the pair lifted material from "local 12" singles, CD-Rs and the archives of community radio station 3RRR FM". Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from the acid-flecked, "Nude Photo" style Detroit fun of FSOM's "Resist The Beat" and chiming, trumpet-laden bliss of Ian Eccles-Smith's "The Slaughtering Eye", to the jaunty, mid-90s New York style bounce of Blimp's "Yellowgold" and the ultra-deep ambient techno pulse of Tetrphnm's "Track 11". Check, too, the enveloping dreaminess of Screensaver's drifting ambient closer, and the jazzy dancefloor depth of Inner Harmomy's "Da Lub Club".

  1. BPMF - "Liza On Clouds" (6:20)
  2. Invisble Menders - "Three On Three" (9:10)
  3. Memphis - "Altered States" (7:03)
  4. Miro SundayMusiq - "From Behind The Corner" (8:39)
Review: Following an excellent EP from Memphis, Animals On Psychedelics returns with more weird and wonderful party fare from the outer reaches. This time it's a various artists release that brings together all the producers involved in the label so far, while also introducing BPMF to the fold with the woozy, rubbery synth shapes of "Liza On Clouds." Jane Fitz and Dom Ahtuam's Invisible Menders project presents the rolling, psyched out melodics of "Three On Three," while Memphis pushes further into experimental territory with the wonderfully fractured "Altered States." That leaves it to Miro SundayMusiq to complete the EP with the wave-meets-Italo tones of "From Behind The Corner," a perfectly noirish flourish to finish a sterling record.

Review: Previously spotted on Nomine's Nomine Sound and Fox & Hound, Berlin's CPE gets his fractured jig on with Georgian label Transfigured Time. Weighing in at six tracks it's near-album sized, too. Highlights include the brittle neck snaps and alien charm of opener "CTRL", the grainy decays and paranoid ghetto funk of "Projects 32" and the physical rabbit punch beat blows of "This Is Science". Review: Needs is back with its fifth installment of charity-raising goodness from some seriously quality producers. This time the gauntlet is thrown down by the increasingly prolific DJ Normal 4, who wields some of his signature breakbeats over a cheeky synth that nods to Da Hool for a dark and deadly roller. Israeli duo Red Axes pop up fresh from outings on !K7 and Phantasy Sound for the worldly percussion and mystical atmosphere of "Treacksheni" before Bristol bass-wielding techno titan Hodge finishes the package off with the stunning, dramatic undulations of "Signal," making this a collection of tracks that all feed into the same vein of rhythmically adventurous, moody club music.

Review: Lee Norris' Norken project has been on prolific form of late, not least with plenty of reissues of classic material on Delsin and Neo Ouija, but here's something new from the seminal leftfield electro venture on new label Subconscious Algorithms. Norken fans will find much to love here, leading in with the wobbly synth strokes of "Coast 2 Coast" that positively cascades its gorgeous melodic content down upon your ear drums. "Heart Hertz" is no slouch in the emotional stakes either, especially when the lingering sustain of the string notes unfurl into the bubbling broth of machine-wrought harmonies. This is advanced electronics for sensitive system souls.

Review: Irish producer Ruff Cherry has so far left a small trail of breadcrumbs for any seekers switched on enough to follow, from an early 12" on A Sagittariun's Elastic Dreams to a pair of singles on Midgar, but now the mysterious artist lands on the increasingly intriguing Well Street label and the results are fantastic. "Siren" is an ear-snagging trip through driving but non-standard beat formations shot through with a dubby melancholy, while "Innocent" heads into weirder territory with more audacious sound design and plenty of voluminous bass swells. "Carousel" keeps things fractured and bleepy, while "Keeper" focuses on tribal percussive intonations and a brooding atmosphere to get fully immersed in.

  1. Cyber (House Pass) (7:26)
  2. Cyber (Cosmic Slide) (7:13)
  3. Cyberc (Ambient Sax mix) (7:28)
Review: Gilles Smith and James Priestley seem to be devoting far more of their time to music production. This excellent outing on Mule Musiq is their second single of 2018 following a solid debut on Phonica Records earlier in the year. In its' A-side "House Pass" form, "Cyber" is a deliciously saucer-eyed and loved-up affair where dizzyingly positive synthesizer motifs wrap themselves around a chunky bassline and bouncy, No Smoke style drums. Over on side B, Smith and Priestley offer up two alternative interpretations: the trippy, techno-tinged early morning psychedelic hypnotism of the "Cosmic Slide" version, and the beat-less bliss of the "Ambient Sax Version", which further explores the track's Italian dream house influences.

"That D Beat" comes first - a brittle, rasping monster of a track with frantic urgency and experimentation in equal measure, which then gets softened out a touch with the human elements that feed into the "Camouflaged" version. Deetron's standalone mix of "That D Beat" is a wholly different proposition made of deep, dubby synth expressions without losing the rhythmic energy of the original. "Blue Bird" is a gorgeous slice of machine soul that reaches for the stratosphere, only to take on a kind of bombastic heft when tweaked for the "Filtered" version. Then Bone does a powerful finishing move on "Blue Bird" that matches the strong melodic strokes of the track with his own uncompromising artistic signature - a match made in techno heaven.
