Review: The unveiling of an Apparat album is always cause for commotion with the artist influence enough to push radio stations to stream his music 24/7 upon release. Long passages of streaming synth-textures underline the loose and sparse percussive effects of Apparat's jazz and minimalism. The artist's signature bass pulses hit the sweet spot throughout the albums entirety, always inspiring a well of heavy feeling when they do. Touches of the artist's Bpitch Control days remain as does Apparat's always inspired approach when merging instrumentation with outboard gear and technology, beat making and sound design. A sound to cherish once more.

Review: For many people. Sigur Ros only started their forays into the popular consciousness with 1999's Agaetis Byrjun and it's jaw-dropping hit 'Sven-G-Englar'. which meant that this debut, released two years earlier, is often forgotten about. Hopefully this reissue will help to redress the balance, as 'Von' is easily as impressive a status as its successor. Breathtaking in its scope, a mighty 62 minutes long, and every bit as fragile and ethereal as we've come to expect from this sky-surfing troupe, the blissful meld of celestial experimentation and ethereal dreampop here nonetheless miraculously stays well away from the lure of self-indulgence, forming an impressively assured and powerful first salvo.

Review: This may be the last chapter in what stands proud as the mightiest resurrection of a classic band in modern times, yet for all the melancholy to be suffered if this does prove to be the case, frankly, what a way to go. 'The Glowing Man' is full to bursting with the kind of panoramic soundscapes, intense existential gravitas and dramatic crescendos that have characterised Michael Gira & Co's post-2010 output, yet has restraint and subtlety to match its almighty sturm-und-drang - these colossal songs triumph just as much through their dynamics and beauty as their volume and brute force, crowning a startling achievement a singular and overwhelming primal force deserving of awe aplenty.

Review: Re-issue of this underground classic for those that know! Originally released in 1983, Lifetones comprised of duo Charles Bullen and Julius Cornelius Samuel. Bullen was previously in short lived but seminal art rock outfit This Heat and drummer Samuel was also known in some circles as Dub Judah. Hailed by many as an influential and innovative project, the band fuses dub, krautrock, middle eastern and post punk aesthetics interestingly on this Zeitgeist/soundtrack for early 80's Thatcherite Britain and the struggles of youth in Brixton in the face of economic adversity.

Review: Once again using an ambitious conceptual framework to house a record which draws on historical texts and multimedia sources alongside their widescreen melange of post-rock, prog, dance and ambient stylings, 'Every Valley' deals with the Welsh mining industry and its trials and travails in the last half of the twentieth century. A project as mighty as the industry it chronicles, it resonates with emotive heft and atmospheric power whilst being careful not to overly romanticise its subject matter - this is fundamentally a deeply melancholic album, chronicling the slow demise of a way of life with spirit, clarity and sensitivity, not to mention musical invention.

Review: British duo Raime are back with the first album since 2012's brilliant Quarter Turns A Living Line and their signature style of dark ambience and haunting imaginary soundtracks which incorporate jungle, dub and post-punk influences into the mix also. The album is said to be largely influenced by their side project Moin which incorporates rock and metal influences too. According to Blackest Ever Black "the DNA of dub-techno, garage/grime and post-hardcore rock music spliced into sleek and predatory new forms." Highlights include the moody subtractive rock of "Dialling In, Falling Out", the dub and post punk crossover of "Dead Heat" and the brooding mood-lighting of "Cold Cain".

Review: New this week is the debut album from Coral Rose as The Silver Field, an abstract and experimental, ambient excursion through the more bizarre lands of post-psyche rock. Recorded in Rose's bedroom the LP follows recent releases on O Genesis by Daniel O'Sullivan (VELD) and Richard Youngs (Belief). The album, like its cover, represents a spread of shady colours and puts through the wash a bevy of instruments like the double bass, cello, guitar, and mandolin as beautifully finger-plucked on the album's closing title-track. Amidst drenches of reverberation and delay techniques, "Rain" itself, a highlight of the album, couldn't sound more like the fact, albeit in Rose's folk-charm style, while there's also "Dolino" for a heavier loop-making trip that lands somewhere between techno and noise. And for that sublime trip into the abyss it's all about "Moors".

Review: Come On Die Young was an enormously important record for this young band on its release in 1999, proving them a uniquely powerful force not only in UK indie but worldwide, forging a gloriously dynamic, abstract yet effortlessly melodious form of (mostly) instrumental music that engaged the emotions just as much as the cerebellum. Recorded with Dave Fridmann, it's a gloomy masterpiece of cinematic melancholy and heavily amplified drama, and thus much deserving of this bumper expanded box set. Comprising demos and out-takes from this fruitful period, along with an entire live show that chronicles this arresting outfit at the peak of their powers, this is an essential portrait of a revolutionary musical force that proved themselves just as adept with near-silence as screaming noise.

Review: Battles, the NYC art rock group, have been around since 2002 and they've also featured on Warp's catalogue for over ten years. The trio are back with a new album on the London imprint, twelve tracks of stoner jams coated in a fine layer of electronic oddity. Much like their previous releases, Battles are minimal on the vocals, preferring instead to speak through their guiatrs, drums and synthesizers; our selections from the LP have to be "Summer Simmer" for its driving groove and almost Bollywood chimes, the slow electronic waves of "Cacio E Pepe", "Dot Com's" percussive energy, and the jazzy influences of the sublime "Tricentennial". Pure class that should not be slept on. Welcome back, boys!

Review: If you're in the market for a beginner's guide to krautrock and "kosmiche", then the first two volumes of Soul Jazz's Deutsche Elektronische Musik series should be essential listening. This third volume - the first for four years - should be on that list, too. It arguably goes deeper than its predecessors, combining cuts from pioneering electronic and art-rock bands like Neu!, Cluster and Popol Vuh with tracks from lesser-known artists such as Michael Bundt, Dronsz and Achim Reichel. Musically, it's also far more diverse than its predecessors, containing as much space-rock and proto-punk as early electronic experimentation and droning alternative rock. As ever, the accompanying sleeve notes from author David Nobbs expand on the story in brilliant detail.

Review: Over the course of their lengthy career, Animal Collective have put out a steady stream of albums that veer between experimental, post-rock soundscapes and skewed, left-of-centre indie-pop. Tangerine Reef, their eleventh and latest set, sees them back in experimental mode, delivering a range of fluid, liquid soundscapes inspired by their work with art-science filmmakers Coral Morphologic. All of the album's music was written to soundtrack a film by the latter duo, which can be watched in full on Animal Collective's website. Aurally, the album is indicative of the slowly shifting visuals - built around time-lapse style footage of coral growing - and tends towards the dreamy, otherworldly and drowsy.
