Review: "In Rainbows", Radiohead's seventh album, finally gets a physical release! It's one thing downloading this landmark album, but to actually hold this is something special. Not only do you get increased sound quality, but you also get the amazing artwork from Stanley Donwood. This album includes "Nude", a live favourite for many years that was originally written during the "OK Computer" sessions. More minimal that their "Kid A" period, "In Rainbows" does something that very few albums have done - its sound is distinct from previous Radiohead albums, but is still clearly Radiohead. Hail to the kings, they are back on top form.

Review: Ultra-vintage reissued psych-pop from Parsley Sound, whose self-titled debut for Mo Wax was one of the label's most prized releases, and yet ended up massively inflated in price due to early sellouts and low pressing numbers. The duo / band made up of Danny Sargassa and Preston Mead are deft emulators of full-band sonics, producing the illusion of a wider ensemble; Parsley Sounds followed the early EPs 'Ease Yourself And Glide' and 'Twilight Mushrooms', but was comparatively much softer on the ears, charming the listener with its herbal pan flutes, downtempo era string segments, and not-too-heavy 70s throwback haunto-pysch cult propulsions. Clearly an early influence of now colossal cognates of the sound like Caribou and Four Tet, Parsley Sounds is essential heads' listening for those who wish to lead a certain uncanny, chintzy still life, yet who also know something of the restless beauty of said life. A5er 'Ocean House' is the expansive ballad that proves this, finding a lo-fi yet cavernous vocal opportunity in an otherwise claustrophobic cranny of sound.

Review: Godspeed You! Black Emperor are back for their newest and most eagerly awaited album, No Title As Of 13 February 2024 28,340 Dead. This upcoming record, their first since 2021's G_d's Pee At State's End!, comprises six tracks that promise to uphold the band's renowned style of merging ambient textures with explosive crescendos. The album's title, steeped in the bleak realities of a world fraught with turmoil and disintegration, is echoed in the music itself. The compositions integrate field recordings, sparse instrumentation, and solemn hymns, embodying their anti-war and anti-capitalist ethos. Known for their dramatic contrasts and expansive, multi-part pieces, Godspeed You! Black Emperor continue to blend influences from post-punk, progressive rock, and avant-garde. No Title As Of 13 February 2024 28,340 Dead promises to deliver a compelling and introspective listening experience, staying true to the band's politically charged and dystopian themes.

Review: Public Service Broadcasting's fifth studio album, The Last Flight, four years on from their 2021 concept album, Bright Magic, taking inspiration from the life and final voyage of pioneering aviator Amelia Earhart. Frontman J. Willgoose Esq. explained the choice of Earhart's story, noting a desire to highlight a female-focused narrative amid an archive dominated by male figures. He was initially drawn to Earhart's final flight but became increasingly fascinated by her extraordinary achievements and dignified philosophy. The album's first single, 'Electra,' shows what to expect - a pulsating, funk-inspired track capturing the vibrancy and excitement of Earhart's Lockheed Model 10-E Electra aircraft. With interlocking percussive melodies and driving electronics, 'Electra' embodies the same determination and force as Earhart's daring spirit. The Last Flight promises a rich, life-affirming exploration of adventure, speed, and freedom, featuring guest appearances by Carl Broemel (My Morning Jacket) on pedal steel and Berlin voices Andreya Casablanca and EERA, both of whom contributed to Bright Magic.

On this release, Fred und Luna lead the charge with their distinctive sound, drawing from the genre's rich history while infusing it with fresh, forward-thinking elements. Featuring Ralf Hutter, Florian Schneider, and Klaus Dinger among others, the album combines acoustic instruments with bold electronic elements, creating a cerebral yet immersive sonic experience. Review: Mount Kimbie's The Sunset Violent offers a deeply evocative, unsettling exploration of emotional dissonance. Opening with the single 'Dumb Guitar', the album vividly portrays a couple grappling with their fractured relationship amidst the beauty of a fictional Chinese beach resort. Andrea Balency-Bearn's serene vocals juxtapose against lyrics of personal turmoil, while buzzy synths, discordant pianos and overdriven guitars evoke an atmosphere of tension and heartbreak. Mount Kimbie, led by Dom Maker and Kai Campos, have expanded their lineup, adding Balency-Bearn and Marc Pell, crafting a post-punk sound with corroded guitars and skeletal drums. Their sonic evolution from their earlier work culminates here, drawing from influences like Sonic Youth and The Fall, while frequent collaborator King Krule contributes to the melancholic undercurrent. Recorded in California's surreal Yucca Valley and pressed on translucent petrol blue vinyl, this album mirrors the desolation and hope of the landscape. Tracks like 'Yukka Tree' and 'Fishbrain' dive into themes of isolation and disconnection, balancing dark tones with flashes of light. With The Sunset Violent, Mount Kimbie stretch their horizons, blending post-punk, dub, and indie influences into a compelling emotional journey.

Review: Beth Gibbons releases her debut solo album Lives Outgrown. Notably containing ten songs that were in total written over the course of ten years, the overarching mood is one of saying farewell and musing on the bittersweetness of loss. The English singer and notable Portishead member's solo efforts often operate with this affect, but Gibbons' latest is of special import, given the length of time over which these songs were crafted and occasionally performed over the years. As demonstrated by lead track 'Floating On A Moment', the palette is soft and reflective, hitting only the softest dynamic notes, as Gibbons sings of unique lifetime journeys and a dealt-with sense of friends suffering being left behind.

Review: The Moon and the Melodies, a collaboration between Cocteau Twins and ambient pioneer Harold Budd, stands as a unique gem in both artists' discographies. Originally released in 1986, this ethereal album is now being reissued on vinyl, remastered from the original tapes by Robin Guthrie. Unlike anything else the Cocteau Twins ever produced, this record blends their dreamlike soundscapes with Budd's serene, improvisational piano work. The result is an atmospheric journey, at once intimate and expansive. Tracks like 'Sea, Swallow Me' shine with Elizabeth Fraser's otherworldly vocals, intertwined with Guthrie's shimmering guitar and Raymonde's grounding bass, creating a sound that feels both familiar and entirely unique. Instrumentals like 'Memory Gongs' and 'The Ghost Has No Home' highlight Budd's delicate piano, enhanced by the band's signature ambient textures. The album is a study in contrasts, vocal tracks sit alongside instrumentals, each contributing to a cohesive yet diverse listening experience. For fans, this reissue is a chance to revisit a pivotal moment in the evolution of dream pop and ambient music. The album's enduring appeal is evident in its continued influence in social media. The Moon and the Melodies remains a shining light that can happen when artists from different realms come together to create something truly timeless.

Review: Is it an album? A really long EP? A masterpiece of transportive heavy metal innovation realised via seamless dark overture? Certainly, Dopesmoker is the latter. As for the others, it really depends on whether or not you can consider four tracks to be an LP. Running at around 60minutes puts this on the shyer side of long form releases too, but who ever heard of an hour-long extended play?

Questions that threaten sanity aside, the third major studio outing from US metallers sleep is nothing short of inspired. Actually released three years before this version first surfaced (in 1999 via The Music Cartel under the title Jerusalem), the record is certainly good enough to warrant a second reveal. It's thick, gritty, grimy, low-end driven grinding stuff that still slaps with tangible funk and, while menacing, belongs to a side of the canon removed from visceral screams of noisecore subgenres, packing undeniable rock musicality.

The Velvet Underground founding member was in stellar company with Brian Eno, Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera and one of the most prolific studio session guitarists of all time, Chris Spedding, all appearing on the album. The album is stacked with bangers, but of note is the life-affirming and soulful 'Dirtyass Rock 'n' Roll; his cover of 'Heartbreak Hotel', which is one of the best covers ever recorded and 'I'm Not The Loving Kind'. The latter gained recognition most recently when the late, great Mark Lanegan covered it beautifully for his Imitations album. Cale will forever be a wellspring of inspiration.

Review: The Residents deliver a live performance that's as eccentric as their decades-long career. Recorded in Fribourg, this show blends their surreal storytelling with experimental soundscapes, creating an atmosphere that's both haunting and playful. The arrangements, reworked for the live setting, highlight their ability to transform unconventional ideas into captivating experiences. This is a snapshot of their raw, theatrical energy, offering long-time fans a reminder of their innovative spirit.

Review: Can Live in Keele 1977 captures a key performance from one of the most innovative bands of all time. This long remoured album features Can's late-period lineup: Irmin Schmidt, Jaki Liebezeit, Michael Karoli, and Holger Czukay, joined by Rosko Gee on bass. Czukay's shift to "waveform radio and spec. sounds" adds an otherworldly layer to the band's hypnotic, avant-garde textures. Pieced together from archival and fan recordings, the album highlights the unpredictable and experimental nature of Can's live performances during their 1976-77 peak. The inclusion of tracks that fans have long considered the best of their live work brings a raw, dynamic energy. Fans of Can's legendary improvisations will appreciate the diversity of sound, from ambient passages to intense, chaotic jams. Live in Keele 1977 stands as a crucial document of the band's legacy as they explore "inner space rock" and live sonic exploration.

Review: The latest record from the trio marks a significant milestone in their decade-long friendship, being the first album written while all members reside in the same city since 2017's Assemblages. The band's relentless rehearsal regimen, focused solely on supporting each other's growth, has resulted in noticeable developments in their individual performances. Jess' vocals have deepened, Fin's guitar work has become richer, and David's drumming has gained intensity. With production allowing for layers and elasticity, the band fully stretched their creative muscles, incorporating analogue techniques to enhance their sound. The resulting album, exudes a sense of beauty and emotional depth. Widely regarded as the band's most generous release to date, the music feels expansive and demands less, inviting listeners to immerse themselves fully and discover its intricacies with each subsequent play.

Review: RECOMMENDED
It's pretty much impossible not to get very, very excited about the prospect of a new Godspeed record. The outfit pretty much wrote the book on huge, epic, fantastical chamber rock with a punk edge when they first set about trying to soundtrack the decline of Western civilisation back in the late-1990s, and following reformation circa 2010 have only felt more relevant.

State's End! is a fitting addition to a back catalogue almost-entirely comprising landmark records, and while very much in the same vein as the band's previous, it's also original enough to confirm the group are still as incomparable as ever (albeit some have noted this album takes them one-step closer to a latter day Pink Floyd). Soaring, rousing, tense instrumental rock that also packs a vital message - the world needs to change tact before all is too late - it's likely this will be one of the year's most essential releases.

Review: San Francisco based noise-rock titans, Kowloon Walled City, return with arguably their strongest output to date in the form of the obliterating, 'Piecework'. Slipping directly into the cavernous cracks between doom and sludge metal, yet approached with a post-hardcore mindset; these hefty pieces convey a despairing ethos not necessarily akin to their brand of trudging anguish. Cathartic, dissonant and emotive, the sum of their discordant parts culminates in a wearisome fusion with plenty of ethereal space left for the arrangements to swell and breathe. Part noise-punk/part sludgy slowcore, few projects within these scenes war with their own dynamism in such fervent fashion.

Review: First released in 1998, the last album from the sadly missed Mark Hollis was originally set to be a Talk Talk album, scheduled to follow up 1991's "Laughing Stock". Described by engineer Phil Brown as "open, restful and at times fantastically beautiful", Hollis' only solo effort is quite the opposite of the dark and claustrophobic direction of Talk Talk's final album. Entirely self-produced, the record takes Talk Talk's pared back, emotive intimacy further into yet more minimal, private territory, of sometimes almost unbearable intensity. A complex, compelling last dispatch from an indisputable genius.

Review: Model/Actriz are a breakthrough band from Brooklyn who make their much-anticipated debut on True Panther with this assured album. From the nerve-jangling lead-in of Cole Haden's edgy vocal murmurings to the inevitable, noisy explosion as 'Donkey Show' opens the album in style, it's clear this is going to propel the band to great things. Embracing experimental, textural approaches to the band dynamic and yet acutely aware of where to hammer down the grooves and even create some gnarled death-disco moments, their inspiration and urgency bursts out of this record. Catch on quick, these guys are heading skywards.

Review: The first of three albums from the Japanese post-everything auteurs titled Heavy Rocks, arrived in 2002 with the second and third installments coming in 2011 and 2022, respectively. These volumes served to allow the group to fully explore their heaviest tendencies with full abandon, and none are as adored or praised (or essential to own on vinyl) than the minimal orange adorned first entry. Plumbing the depths of psychedelic stoner rock, heaving sludge and cavernous doom metal, all whilst retaining accessible grooves and absurdly catchy riffage, this is Boris at their most abrasive, face-melting and imposing, while also serving as a solid entry point into their beastly 20+ album discography.

Review: Critics talk of 'timelessness' like it's going out of fashion, but when it comes to Irish folk the word carries more clout. Lankum, a four piece contemporary outfit born from the ever-thriving Dublin scene and a duo project, Lynched (named after the band's two founding brothers, Ian and Daragh Lych), are a perfect example of what we're talking about. Live In Dublin is a great reference point to understand this. If ever there were sounds made to be experienced IRL then it might be the noises these multi-instrumentalists evidently love to make. Simultaneously capable of transporting us to peaty moorlands of the past, while hitting nail on head as to where we are today, and presenting bold visions of how sounds might develop tomorrow, from rousing crescendos to pin-drop-quiet, this is relentlessly captivating stuff.

Review: Sunfear is a project from Turkish multidisciplinary artist Eylul Deniz who now returns to Dark Entries with her sophomore album. Deniz has been making waves in sound since 2017 when she debuted her blend of ambient and experimental music using piano, guitar, voice and synths as tools for storytelling and self-expression. Inspired by Dante's Love That Moves the Sun and Other Stars, Pessoa's poems and Turkish poet Lale Muldur, this darker follow-up to Octopus channels some of her own personal loss and grief. Tracks like 'Above' pair sparse guitar riffs with swirling electronics, 'Bright and Wild' contrasts lush drones with jagged feedback and there are also hints of hope in the likes of 'Form Changed.' A great return.

Review: Toe's latest release is an impressive and intricate offering in the post-rock/math-rock genre, showing the band's ability to craft technically complex yet soothing music. With more textured instrumentation than in previous albums, the band experiments with a variety of sounds, including acoustic and electric guitars, marimbas, and synths, while also incorporating vocals in select tracks. This broader palette enhances the richness of their compositions, blending tight rhythms with emotional melodies. Tracks like 'After Image' and 'Goodbye' exemplify the band's capacity to weave lyrical elements seamlessly into their instrumental fabric, creating a chilled yet engaging atmosphere. The drumming, often at the forefront, steals the show with its dynamic precision, propelling the album forward without overwhelming the overall sound. It's a standout feature, providing both energy and nuance throughout the record. Influences ranging from King Crimson to Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell are evident, though Toe maintains their own distinctive voice. The controlled interplay between instruments is both intricate and meditative, a balance between individual technicality and the collective structure of the compositions. This album solidifies Toe's reputation as a band pushing boundaries while maintaining a highly listenable and relaxed vibe.

Review: Outtakes, B-sides, rarities and previously unheard tracks from the proto-shoegaze heroes on what is the most comprehensive archival release from the band, spanning their earliest studio recordings to their final sessions. The double CD includes never-before-heard tracks like 'Shout You Down' from the Today sessions and 'I Wanna Live' from the On Fire sessions. Drummer Damon Krukowski remarked on the nostalgic experience of revisiting these recordings, likening it to opening an old journal. Bassist Naomi Yang reflected on the developmental journey captured in the tracks, highlighting the evolution of their collective sound and her own bass playing. Galaxie 500's three seminal albums, Today (1988), On Fire (1989), and This Is Our Music (1990), were all recorded with producer Kramer at Noise New York. This compilation completes the band's recorded output from those pivotal years, offering fans a deeper dive into their creative process.

Review: Immersion is the epitome of collaboration. Comprising Colin Newman, of legendary UK post punk outfit Wire, and his life partner Malka Spigel, the two first came together in 1985, former producing the latter's band, and have since fallen in love and combined creative forces countless times. Growing out of their Immersion project, a series of pop up gigs took place at the Rosehill, Brighton, with a cast of influential and cutting edge musicians getting involved. Songs were written and rehearsed before each show, and an album, Nanocluster Vol.1, soon materialised. Now we have the follow up. Disc one is centred on Thor Harris, percussion doyen of Swans, while the second half refocuses our attention on Cubzoa, AKA Jack Wolter of Penelope Isles, with Matt Schulz (Holy Fuck) also involved. The result is a psyche-tinged ride through swaggering indie, dream pop, chill, and surreal rock, nodding to names from Beta Band to King of Woolworths and beyond.

Review: On their latest release, Crippled Black Phoenix takes their signature mix of atmospheric rock and melancholy to new heights. The band's blend of brooding, cinematic soundscapes and haunting melodies draws you in, but it's the emotional intensity that really grips. 'We Forgotten Who We Are' pulses with a raw energy, while 'Song for the Unloved' taps into a quiet despair that lingers long after the track fades. There's a sense of reinvention on this releaseifamiliar elements are reworked with fresh perspective, making it feel like both a reflection and a bold step forward for the band.
