Cat: PAMPA 032. Rel: 27 Sep 18
  1. In Your Eyes (9:42)
  2. As Above So Below (8:05)
Review: After spending last autumn working alongside Rampa and Adam Port (see the trio's excellent "You Are Safe" album on Keinemusik), Andre "&Me" Boadu has enjoyed a quiet 2018. In fact, this outing on Pampa is his first release of 2018. He begins with the atmospheric and undulating delight that is "In Your Eyes", a slightly jazz-flecked rolling deep house excursion that brilliantly builds energy throughout. Boadu accomplishes this using two contrasting melodic elements: fluid piano solos and a foreboding electronic motif that increases in prominence and intensity as the track progresses. Over on side B, "As Above So Below" is an altogether deeper proposition, with hushed, cymbal heavy percussion, tech-tinged drums and a spacey, undulating synthesizer melody combining to create a hazy late night mood.

  1. X-Rays (7:08)

  4. Starship (6:29)
Review: When Mark Ambrose's "Smoky Clinic EP" first appeared in record stores way back in 1997, tech-house was still a relatively new phenomenon. Ambrose's productions were in keeping with the freshly minted style's original ethos, fixing the futurism and sci-fi intent of Detroit techno to the rhythmical approach of New York and Chicago house. As this reissue proves, the record has aged well, sounding as deep, melodiously, hypnotic and far-sighted in 2018 as it did in '97. While there is one trip into tougher, slightly darker territory - see "Hocus Pocus" - it's the blissful, intergalactic melodiousness of tracks like "Starship" and dreamy opener "X-Rays" that lingers in the memory.

  1. The Same Fury (5:54)
  2. Giddy Up (5:21)
  3. East (5:31)
Review: More re-issues of seminal tech house classics by Josh Brent aka Schatrax from the eponymous imprint, mainly active through the late nineties. For those that know, yes we're preaching to the choir, to those that don't: listen and learn! Up there with legends of the UK sound such as Silicone Soul, Pure Science and early 20:20 Vision. This release was originally known as Schatrax #10 and released in 1997. On side A we've got "The Same Fury" which likes its name suggests is probably the most ferocious track Brent probably ever made: this is some pretty hard jacking and functional techno on here for serious DJ use only. "Giddy Up" is equally as cyclical a DJ tool, with its tribal loops work out hypnotising you into submission much like his other classic "Dizzy". Finally on the flip we've got "East", a more straightforward techno stomper with some fierce 909 driven energy supporting some killer synth stabs.

Countach (12")
Cat: COR 12150. Rel: 14 Mar 18
  1. Countach (7:42)
  2. Countach (Kolsch remix) (7:28)
Review: Sometimes it feels a little like Bulent "Butch" Gurler is collecting record labels in the way school kids collect football stickers. This release sees him notch up a release on Cocoon for the first time, allowing him to affix the shiny, holographic label logo into his discography alongside such top-tier imprints as Trapez, Watergate, Rekids, Visionquest and Hot Creations. "Countach" is arguably one of his most positive and sun-kissed releases to date, with the action focusing on waves of rising and falling synthesizer arpeggio lines, rising electronic orchestration and spine-tingling motifs. Kompakt Extra regular Rune Reilly Kolsch retains some of this fluttering melodiousness on his flipside remix, combining key melodic phrases with more energetic beats and a raw new bassline of his own.

  4. Mutual (8:59)
Review: Amphia co-founder Cristi Cons has been rather quiet of late, having previously impressed with a swathe of solo and collaborative EPs in early 2016. Here, the Romanian producer returns to action for the first time in 2017 via a rock solid collection of cuts, which come stretched across two weighty slabs of wax. As you might expect, all four tracks sit neatly into the now familiar Romanian tech-house style, which combines the crackling textures and production intricacy of minimal techno with the head-nodding shuffle of tech-house drum programming. Our highlight is probably super-odd closer "Mutual", which boasts some serious sub-bass and plenty of odd electronic noises, though the slightly more symphonic "Perceptual" is not far behind.

Trapped! (12")
Cat: LT 016. Rel: 25 Sep 12
  1. Trapped!
  2. I'm Feelin' (feat Frosche)
Review: Swedish duo Dirtytwo rightfully caused a stir with their Local Talk debut last year, updating an ESG classic for deep house ears which found favour with everyone from Kerri Chandler to The Revenge. Another classic of the 80s era from Colonel Abrams falls under the scrutiny of Dirtytwo here, as the accapella from his standard "Trapped" is lifted and matched to a wondrously jacking 90s house refrain which is possibly more inventive than their celebrated debut. On the flip, "I'm Feelin'" demonstrates the duo are just as able at crafting a more modern sound, calling on old friend Frosche to add some vocal depth to a relentlessly bumping 4/4 groove.

  1. Moment (8:10)
  2. Gamma (6:11)
  3. Moment (Losoul remix) (11:19)
Review: Under his longstanding DJ Honesty alias, veteran producer Hans Schaaf has delivered some fantastic music over the past two decades. Happily, he appears to be getting more productive as the years roll by, with this three-tracker on Bass Culture marking his third 12" of 2017. With its bustling bassline, relentless cymbals, Motor City motifs and carefully placed dub effects, lead cut "Moment" sits somewhere between hypnotic European techno and ocean-deep house. This hybrid vibe is even more noticeable on Losoul's epic flipside remix, which subtly toughens up the track and stretches it out to 11 mesmerizing minutes. Further thrills are provided via bonus cut "Gamma", a more bumpin' deep house roller with heavy New Jersey influences.

Review: In truth, most of 1080p's vinyl releases have extolled the virtues of a Mellow Vibe, though few have been quite as dreamy and picturesque as this debut EP from Sophie Sweetland's new DJ Zozi alias. While each of the four tracks makes its' dancefloor intentions clear, it's the typically Canadian dreaminess of the accompanying chords, melodies and textures that catches the ear. Throughout, there are plenty of nods to early British hardcore breakbeat (see the cheeky "Zozi Theme" and "Up (Slammin Vers)"), as well as early 808 State ("Mellow Vibe") and bouncy, cut-up deep house (the hugely enjoyable "Snow Globe"). As you'd expect from both producer and label, the whole thing is vibrant, colourful and decidedly loved-up

Review: Roger Gerressen launched the Monoware project last year, via a split 12" on Sushitech that also contained a killer cut from Ion Ludwig. Here the experienced Dutch producer returns to the same label with a much more expansive proposition: the first Monoware full-length. While there's one foray into head-in-the-clouds, sofa-friendly deep dub territory (the delicious closing cut), the other tracks clearly take aim at the dancefloor. These club workouts are all rooted in techno, but various draw unfluence from crackly, lo-fi explorations, intergalactic broken techno, tech-jazz, toasty deep house and the blazed, metronomic pulse of dub techno. Happily, Gerressen barely puts a foot wrong throughout, serving up tracks that are as warm and otherworldly as they are sturdy and club-ready.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Gravity Graffiti has been doing great things with its series of split 12"s already, but now the Italian label goes one better for its tenth release with this mighty double pack of heavy hitters. First up is the ever-untouchable Yoshinori Hayashi, who gets as straight up as he possibly could with the freaky house burner "Dissociative." Telephones is feeling particularly dubbed out and groovy on "Kalimbalimbo", while DB.Source and Riccardo Schiro take things strung out and textural on "Montevago". Dynamo Dreesen is in rave mode for the pepped up and delightfully weird "Reactivate", leaving the final side to Oyvind Morken & Kaman Leung's chugging "Tunnel Visjon" and the rubbery side swipes of Acidboychair's "The End (At Any Speed)".

Review: Eleven years after he introduced us to his Mr White alias with the acidic bliss of "The Sun Can't Compare", Heard returns with two more extensive, immersive and stylised slices of house. "Virtual Emotion" is a breath-taking progressive odyssey that resonates in that perfect sweet spot between house and techno. "Supernova" takes a much more structured route with full nagging vocals and a sense of proto house theatre running throughout. With promise of a new album (his first in over 12 years), it's an exciting time to be a Larry Heard fan.

  1. Ginster (8:04)

  3. Leap-Second (7:57)
Review: After what seems like an eternity but is, in fact, merely two years, minimal house maestro Isolee returns with a brand new EP. While it shares its title with the name of a famed pasty manufacturer, there's nothing stodgy or calorific about the tasty material on offer. "Ginster" itself is hypnotic, wonky and stripped back, with delay-laden riffs and electronic pulses that recall some of the producer's most glorious moments (EG "Beau Mot Plage" for starters). Over on the flip, "Sudden Frost" sees him make merry with blissful sampled guitar passages, deep house style beats and evocative chords, while "Leap-Second" is altogether weirder, with odd noises riding a beat that's somewhere between glam-rock and the wonky world of Ricardo Villalobos.

Review: Last year, 4Lux man Gerd reissued "Afterglow", a record he made in 1992 while part of obscure Dutch trio It's Thinking. "Hyperion" was the 1994 follow-up to that inspired EP, so it makes perfect sense that he's giving it a new airing, too. It's aged rather well, with superb title track "Hyperion" delivering a deliciously warm and loved-up blend of colourful electronics, dream house chords, rich bass and house-tempo breakbeats. The sparkling "Frame of Mind" sounds like "Chime" and "Belfast"-era Orbital after a night on medical grade happy pills, while "Love Without Sound" peppers a positive techno groove with all manner of shimmering synth sounds. "Funky Finger", meanwhile, is an awesome chunk of saucer-eyed ambient techno bliss.

Review: For the 20th release of the Valencian label Oblack, it is over to Los Pastores aka Snna and Nacho Arauz/Juliche Hernandez from the Canary Islands (DownHill Music). They gather up all their talents to come up with one of the most clubby, dance floor oriented tracks from the label thus far. "Bigger Easy" is classic late noughties style minimal that's big on druggy elements plus those pitch shifted vocals (a la Marc Houle) are a worthy addition. On the flip, "Get Back" is a funky electro house jam with a buzzy synth lead and bumpy bassline over its tight groove, plus those subtle disco influences thrown in for good measure work a treat. The remix by Japanese guy in Berlin, Tomoki Tamura, is the real winner on there though. Here he takes the track into reductionist afterhours territory, with all its dusty and sparsely hypnotic elements working in harmony.

Review: Given the "contemporary classic" status of Danilo Plessow's Raw Cuts series - arguably a string of 12" singles that helped redefine deep house for a new generation - the announcement of a surprise remix 12" is enough to make even the most level-headed DJs go weak at the knees. Pleasingly, said remixers more than live up to the hype. Marcellus Pittman's version - smooth and deep, but with enough raw disco cut-ups and wonky Detroit swing to impress those who like it raw - is particularly good, though Mike Huckaby's locked-in deep house groover is not far behind. There's also a superb version from Recloose, whose crackly, shuffling beats, sweeping pads and soulful vocal samples recall his earliest productions for Planet E.
