Review: Roy Ayers' debut album on Polydor marks a pivotal moment in his musical journey, steering away from traditional jazz towards a vibrant fusion of funk and soul. Ubiquity has Ayers' transition to infectious grooves and sun-drenched textures that resonate with both depth and accessibility. This album succeeds with mid-tempo instrumentals like 'Pretty Brown Skin' and 'The Painted Desert,' which unfold with cinematic richness and psychedelic allure. Backed by a stellar ensemble including bassist John Williams, keyboardist Harry Whitaker, and drummer Alphonso Mouzon, Ayers delivers standout tracks like 'Can You Dig It' and Nat Adderley's 'Hummin' in the Sun,' foreshadowing the expansive funk landscapes he would later explore. Ubiquity stands as a definitive classic and shines a light on Ayers' innovative spirit and enduring influence in shaping the funk genre.

Review: Previously unreleased, Joe Bataan (real name Bataan Nitollano) recorded the bulk of the material making up Drug Story in 1972. This new, highly limited box set hears seven revered, rarely-heard gems of Latin jazz, deep soul, raucous boogaloo, and heavy salsa by the legend, most of which were largely salvaged from his very own self-run Ghetto Records vaults. Drug Story was inspired by true events, and hears Bataan croon graciously over themes of destitution, lost family members and friends, and addiction. One of three definitive reissues of Bataan's greatest works, licensed from Bataan himself, with his oversight and input into a 15 page oversized book by Pablo Yglesia,s that details Bataan's larger-than-imagination life and his little Latin label that could.

Review: George Benson's upcoming release, Dreams Do Come True: When George Benson Meets Robert Farnon, promises to be a brilliant journey into the past, rediscovering lost treasures from Benson's illustrious career. Collaborating with celebrated composer-arranger Robert Farnon in 1989, Benson delivers soulful renditions of American standards and reimagined pop classics with his signature style. The album, originally recorded during a prolific period but delayed and lost for 35 years, has now resurfaced from Benson's archive. With meticulous remastering and production by Grammy-award-winning pianist Randy Waldman, the album is brought back to life, showing Benson's fluid guitar work and emotive vocals. Dreams Do Come True adds another remarkable chapter to Benson's legacy as a jazz and contemporary music icon, following his groundbreaking success with albums like Breezin'. The wait will be well worth it for long time fans.

A Song For You
A Long Time Ago
Love Is Blue
My Romance
Autumn Leaves
Can't We Be Friends

One Goodbye
Review: Benson's first album since rejoining Warner Music Group earlier this year, it was originally recorded in 1989 but was never released. It features the celebrated composer-arranger Robert Farnon and his orchestra and Farnon's lush arrangements beautifully complement Benson's soulful vocals and fluid guitar work on American standards like 'Autumn Leaves,' 'At Last,' and 'My Romance', as well as reimagined pop classics such as the Beatles' 'Yesterday' and Leon Russell's 'A Song For You.' The album was delayed and subsequently lost until recently rediscovered in Benson's archive and with the help of pianist, composer and arranger Randy Waldman, Benson has revived and remastered the recordings, adding new overdubs and choral arrangements. This release adds a new chapter to Benson's illustrious career, following his tenure with Warner Records from 1976 to 1993, during which he released 12 studio albums, including the triple-platinum Breezin'. Recognised as a jazz master by the National Endowment of the Arts (NEA) in 2009, Benson continues to be a giant in both jazz and contemporary music.

Gypsy Heart (3:57)
Beauitful Lies (3:34)
Review: Betty Black's 'Gypsy Heart' is a sassy, driving dancer, brimming with flair and powerful vocals. The track marries Rhythm and Blues under the watchful eyes of Gospel and African-American Spirituals. It's mystical and cinematic, yet gutsy and funky - a true Roots Revival Soul with a sophisticated twist, perfect for the dance floor. On the flip side, 'Sweet Beautiful Lies' blurs the lines between Motown, Latin Soul, and Funk. Betty is surrounded by a Phil Spector-inspired wall of sound, delivering a 60s aura as she recounts a young woman's encounter with a smooth-talking man. Backing vocals echo the timeless theme with a modern touch. The track boasts fat backbeat drums, roaring bass, a full Latin percussion section, and horns, all crammed into the studio to accompany Betty.

Review: The Blue Rhythm Combo was a collective of musicians from Barbados including Bert "Panta" Brown, Clarence Thompson, Don Allamby, Jeff Grannum, Kurt Dallaway, Leroy Williams and more. They were active in the seventies and in 1972 dropped their Magumba album. It's a fiery fusion of funk, Latin and soul music that is a cult classic amongst collectors. As such, originals are hard to find and will cost upwards of 300 quid so this reissue is well timed. From the strident horns of 'BRC's Groove' to the ska-like swagger and reggae overtones of 'Mother And Child Reborn' this is a great summertime listen.

Review: Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaires' live album from the Paredes De Coura Festival in Portugal, August 21, 2015, is a soul-stirring testament to their electrifying stage presence and raw emotional funk. Backed by his tight-knit band, The Extraordinaires, Bradley delivered powerhouse performances of soul and funk classics and original hits, all with his earnest vocals and magnetic stage charisma. Tracks like 'The World (Is Going Up in Flames)' and 'Changes' showcase Bradley's ability to blend heart-wrenching soul with infectious energy and create a dynamic live experience that resonates long after the last note fades. This album is a must-listen for soul lovers who like it live and direct.

Review: Mad About brings the funky goodness here with a superb double sided 7". Sonny Bravo kick off with 'Tighten Up' which brings nice loose break beats and ton pot percussive clatter. The big horns are the icing on this particularly delicious cake. On the flip is the more Northern Soul style sound of Mongo Santamaria's 'We Got Latin Soul' with its fiery South American spirit, blasts of horn and edgy stabs all topped off with a great vocal that oozes cool. Another fine outing from the always on point Mad About.

Oh My (3:57)
Review: British multi-hyphenate James Alexander Bright is soon to return with his third album and ahead of that you can get a taste of what to expect in the form of this irresistible electro-boogie banger. 'Straight Line', says Borght, "started out as a wonky homage to 80s & 90s radio" and is "based on the memory of meeting someone you want to stay up all night listening to music with". His voice takes the lead with LinnDrum beats and wispy synths, lithe pads and a slapping bassline. It's sultry, steamy and sure to get temperatures rising. 'Oh My' is a superb jazz-funk workout in a late-night Theo Parrish style.

Review: To mark the 50th anniversary of the iconic British gangster film Get Carter (actually released in 1971) which starred Michael Caine and was directed by Mike Hodges, Beatball South Korea presented the soundtrack that propelled jazz musician Roy Budd into film music stardom. This expanded edition draws from the original Japanese and British OST releases but also offers a bonus disc with outtakes and dialogue snippets. Part of Beatball's Roy Budd Classic Soundtrack Scores series, this one offers up Budd's jazzy and groovy signature style which very much defined the essence of the film's scenes along with key dialogue. It's a great nod to Budd's genius as well as a still cool standalone listen.

Review: Bobby Byrd struts in inimitable style on 'Never Get Enough' which is an evergreen favourite that now gets reissued once more. Originally released on Brownstone Recordings during the 1970s funk era, the track was produced and arranged by the legendary James Brown, alongside the exquisite 'My Concerto'. While 'My Concerto' is typically indispensable, its omission in this reissue is forgiven in light of an extraordinary addition: an unreleased instrumental of James Brown's iconic production. Funk enthusiasts, take heed - this B-side reissue is a must-have for collectors seeking rare gems from the era.

Review: Formed amid Italy's legendary disco scene of the late 70s, Change defied norms as an Italian-American soul fusion outfit. Orchestrated by Jacques Fred Petrus, the project paired Italian producers Mauro Malavasi and Davide Romani with a rotating lineup of American vocalists that resembled a disco-soul dream team. Inspired by Chic, Change crafted infectious instrumentals in Italian studios and enlisted powerhouse singers like Luther Vandross and Jocelyn Brown. Their transcendent sound yielded hits such as 'The Glow of Love' and 'Searching,' transcending borders to become global icons of soulful dance music that blended European sophistication with American soul influences.

Review: Blurring lines of psychedelic pop, post-rock and progressive jazz, Club Kuru lay down their exquisite third album Before The World - an album that invites us to imagine what life was, or could have at all been like, "before the world could spin" (the album's instantly affecting lyrical tagline). The London-based pysch outfit, helmed by Laurie Erskine, return here from a five-year hiatus to effectively hazard a pop at the hysterical question, "who am I?" Laurie muses on the inquiry and eponymous song, "As I've got older, like many others, I have moments where I'm overcome with a sense of emptiness and no real purpose - constantly grappling with self-doubt and questioning past and present decisions". Expanding upon, rather than attempting to resist, this fundamental subjective can't-quite-place-it-ness, Before The World finds immediate recourse in sensory experiences - 'Morning Bird', 'Sunshine Kiss The Water', 'Blue Sky', 'Gone Like A Flower' - and flirts with the wordless sense of the end of reality first laid laid down by psych's gargantuan genre twin, post-rock. That said, there are still traces of soul and classic rock in there, making for an effective smorgasbord.

Review: Natalie Cole was an American singer-songwriter who excelled in soul, pop, and jazz. She was the daughter of the legendary Nat King Cole, and she had notable family ties including being the cousin of Eddie Cole and the niece of Freddy Cole. Early in her career, she was married to Marvin Yancy, who was part of the songwriting and producing duo Chuck Jackson & Marvin Yancy. Together, they contributed significantly to shaping her musical journey and initial successes and one of her standout jams is the title cut here 'Winner (Take All )' which is a low-slung 80s synth disco delight. 'Azz Iz' brings some boogie to the squelchy synth bass and 'Movin' On' brings horn-led joy. 'How Can You Stop' is a slower more sentimental end of the night closer.

For this one which arrived on black wax in March and now comes on a coloured slab, they work with Tomas Thordarson - whose Latin-flavoured single 'Shame On You' was Denmark's 2004 entry into the Eurovision Song Contest. He gets much more funky here with elements of UK street soul on 'My Life (main)' with its boogie bass and loose, louche claps, rubbery bass and catchy grooves. Flip this one over for a superb dub version.

Tryin' Everything (3:54)
Get Off & Jam (3:54)
Review: The eighth release on the limited edition Florcene Funk sublabel brings two formerly unreleased cuts to our ears. On the A comes 'Tryin' Everything', a lyrical homage to keeping one's options open and not losing one's spirit - "tryin' everything, gotta check it out!" - whilst the B urges the collective listener to climb off its high horse, with 'Get Off An Jam' - through which we are implored, by way of a South Side Coalition sample, to "hey, get down, get off your seats and jam."

Review: Aaron Frazer's Into The Blue is a kaleidoscopic journey through the depths of emotion, blending soul, psychedelia, and hip-hop into a sonic odyssey. Frazer's falsetto soars over cinematic strings and breakbeats, painting a portrait of heartbreak and healing as he ventures from Brooklyn to Los Angeles. Tracks like the haunting title track and the explosive 'Payback' showcase Frazer's mastery of blending raw emotion with intricate production. With Grammy-winner Alex Goose as co-producer, Frazer delves into new sonic territories, incorporating iPhone recordings and samples from unexpected sources like 90s r&b group Hi-Five. The result is a bold and daring album that pushes boundaries while staying true to Frazer's unmistakable style. Into The Blue is not just a record; it's a testament to resilience and the power of music to uplift even in the darkest times.

Review: Aaron Frazer's Into The Blue is a daring fusion of soul, psychedelia, disco and hip-hop, reflecting the multi-instrumentalist's range and sonic exploration. Conceived amidst heartbreak and a cross-country move, the album delves into themes of grief, loneliness, and healing, while also celebrating love and new beginnings. Frazer's unmistakable falsetto and classic songwriting shine through, accompanied by live instruments and innovative production techniques. The title track, 'Into The Blue', sets a haunting tone with cinematic strings and breakbeats, while 'Payback' delivers an explosive dancefloor experience. Throughout the album, towering arrangements reminiscent of David Axelrod blend with rawness, incorporating iPhone recordings and one-take vocals. Co-produced by Grammy-winner Alex Goose, Into the Blue also features Frazer's experimentation with samples from unexpected sources. Despite its origins in heartbreak, Into the Blue offers listeners a sense of optimism, reminding them that amidst grief, there can still be moments of joy. Frazer's album showcases his growth as an artist, reaching new heights while exploring the depths of human emotion.

Review: The 1984 classic 'Come Back Lover' by The Fresh Band receives an official remastered reissue from the original tapes. Produced by Darryl Gibbs of The Strikers and expertly mixed by Tony Humphries, this disco boogie gem soared in underground dance clubs across Chicago and New York, championed by DJs like Mancuso, Larry Levan, and Ron Hardy. Are 'N Be (see what they did there?) presents this special re-release on translucent green vinyl featuring two versions mixed by Humphries: the mesmerising original plus the Dub, with deeper, more atmospheric vocals and stunning piano breaks. Do not sleep on this one.

Better By The Minute (3:42)
Review: The PPU label of out DC is one of our favourites. It's lo-fi sound draws on disco, funk and soul and results in always magical 7"s of delightful dancefloor heat that not only serves up killer grooves, but also plenty of memorable and heart aching hooks. This new one from Glass Pyramid has it all. 'Stop It' is a lo-slung and dusty disco gem with lung busting diva vocals and hip swinging drums that will bring tears of joy to the eyes if dropped at the exact right moment in a set. On the flip, 'Better By The Minute' is another banger with hints of UK street soul in the drums and vocals.

Music Makes The World Go 'Round (instrumental) (3:30)
Review: Numero's Hottest Sounds Around collection captures obscure late-70s grooves from the Greater Antilles. Trinidad's Stan Chaman's Semp label delivered Wilfred Luckie's quirky 'My Thing' and the Hamilton Brothers' calypso-disco hit 'Music Makes The World Go 'Round' in 1978. Meanwhile, across the sea, Frank Penn's G.B.I studio recorded Stephen Colebrook's Doobie Brothers-inspired 'Stay Away From Music,' appealing to cruise ship audiences. All three tracks are packaged in a custom Numero sleeve, echoing the design of Edward Seaga's influential Caribbean music label, WIRL (West Indies Records Ltd.). This compilation revives the vibrant, eclectic sounds of the late 70s, providing a fresh look at the music that once enlivened the Caribbean scene.

Review: Numero's Hottest Sounds Around series has excelled at unveiling a treasure trove of late-70s Caribbean grooves. Now they look to Trinidad where Stan Chaman's Semp label originally presented the Hamilton Brothers' calypso-disco hit 'Music Makes The World Go 'Round' back in 1978. It is a vibrant sound with multi-layered grooves, plenty of inescapable summer vibes and a tropical edge that cannot fail to bring the good times to any session. On the flip is an instrumental that pairs things back to the bubbly rhythms. What's more, it comes on lovely pink vinyl.
