Review: Nobody's Business re-release Kittin's first album, 'First Album', harkening to way back when the electroclash queen (Caroline Herve) formed one part of the duo Miss Kittin & The Hacker with Michael Amato. Perhaps it's time for an electroclash comeback, as we're no less keen on this album as we were back then. We're happily reminded of the hit popcorning single '1982', while between-the-beats coldness prevails on lesser-known cuts like 'Nurse' and 'L'Homme Dans L'Ombre', showing off the pair's near-sociopathically calculated sound. Also of note: this album's original release year, 2001, is to 2022 what 1982 was to it.

Review: As one of the iconic partnerships from the electroclash era, Miss Kittin & The Hacker helped define seedy synth tackle at the turn of the century. Given the prevalence of minimal wave in this day and age, it feels like the perfect time for them to come back with a new album. Teetering between pop nous and the darkest of deviant nighttime dreams, this is everything you would want from a return of the Grenoble greats. Listening to 'Purist' and they could easily be taking on the charts, while a trip into 'La Cave' is like donning your finest leathers and sliding into the dungeon.

Review: Miss Kittin and The Hacker go together like these and biscuits. They have a long history of crafted always edgy electro and electrical sounds and this latest album is the latest chapter in their on going story. It is the second release on Nobody's Business and bristles with attitude. 'The Womb' is all warped bass and caustic textures with Kittin's sleazy vocals. '1000 Dreams' is more elastic and driven by rubbery bass and 'Suspicious Mind' explores a bright, cosmic and melodic world of throwback 80s sounds with Kittin in a more pop vocal mould as she covers the iconic track of the same name.

Review: As part of Drexciya's latest reissue campaign with Tresor, their most defining album 'Neptune's Lair' here gets a rerelease with brand new cover art from Detroit contemporary artist Matthew Angelo Harrison, not to mention a fresh remaster. Perfectly representing the DIY flair of their original deep-sea electro sound - with rough analogue electronics submerged in lo-fi, as though they're being drowned a Drexciyan merman - we're more than happy to have 'Andreaen Sand Dunes', 'Universal Evement' and 'Surface Terrestrial Colonization' grace our ears again.

Review: Astonishingly, GRIT is Luke Vibert's 18th album under his given name (he's released many more as under other aliases such as Wagon Christ, Kerrier District and Amen Andrews), though his first for a couple of years. It's a predictably fun, TB-303 heavy affair, with the prolific Cornishman giddily sprinting through rubbery acid-electro ('Surrounded By Neighbours'), deep acid wooziness ('Decay Hole'), thrillingly wayward machine funk ('Partron'), subdued, bass-heavy swingers (the vaguely Wagon Christ-ish 'Gas Legs'), surging jack tracks (the breathless title track), jaunty house retro-futurism ('Swingeing Cuts'), Kerrier District-goes-acid insanity ('Disco Derriere'), hard-to-pigeonhole madness ('Screwfix Typeface'), and much more besides. A must-check for lovers of trippy acid lines and sweaty, loose-limbed beats.

Review: Even by his own high and prolific stands, Keith Farrugia aka Sound Synthesis is having a superb year filled with many great releases. He has debut on the Electro label, served up tunes for VAs and now lands on the cult contemporary favourite Furthur Electronix with a new double pack of his exquisitely cinematic electro. He explores a wide range of moods and grooves from the slick and high speed 'Simpa Harmonies' to the most zoned out and heady 'Flowing Dreams' all with trademark analogue brilliance.

Neurotelepathy
Review: Most known for their 'Gesamtkunstwerk' of 1999, the Detroit electro outlet's 4th album has added to Gerald Donald's mystifying presence. Straight from the intro track 'Epigenetic Modulation', the album grips you in its abstract noises, which are somewhat medical in nature and definitely a continuation of the group's love for the German electro and techno scenes. Don't be fooled by the opener, as the record goes into multiple melodic, spacious tracks like 'Visual Cortex' and 'Cerebral AI Entanglement'. Throughout, the record wavers between hard-hitting cuts and ambient, lowkey bangers. This album establishes itself as a self-referential piece of Donald's wide and varied discography that spans extreme avant-garde experimental-electronic soundscapes and fans of Donald's other works in Japanese Telecom and Drexciya, as well as previous Dopplereffekt projects, will find solace in this retro-futuristic haven.

Review: Long before electro returned to prominence, Transparent Sound was serving up must-check slabs of body-popping brilliance. In fact, the Bangor-raised duo have now been releasing music for 27 years. 'Beneath The Beauty', the pair's latest single, first featured on 2019 album Gently Evil. It's a fine slab of punchy, intergalactic electro rich in undulating TB-303 acid lines, alien-sounding electronics, shimmering pads and potent TR-808 beats. It comes accompanied by a brand-new flipside rework courtesy of US electro veteran Freddy Fresh, who gives the track a darker, more claustrophobic feel while adding a sparkling new lead line that's impressively futurist in tone.

Review: WeMe's latest compilation is a real treat. It delivers an action-packed trawl through the bulging back catalogue of Ed DMX's Breakin' Records imprint, which is celebrating 25 years in the business in 2022. Since much (though not all) of the label's output has been produced by Ed DMX (under a variety of aliases), it's these that are showcased across the must-check compilation. What you get is body-popping, retro-futurist electro that for the most part sounds like it was recorded in the mid-to-late '80s. Highlights are plentiful throughout, from the Soulsonic Force style brilliance of 'DMX Bass' and 'Computor Rock', to the 8-bit electro-bleep shuffle of 'Be True', the foreboding, electro-rave heaviness of 'Emerging Technology (Remix)', and the roughneck, acid-laden insanity of 'Bongard Problems'.

Review: Having notched up releases as OCB on Casa Voyager, WARNIG and Rue De Plaisance a few years ago, Driss Beniss has been persuaded to re-animate the project via a four-tracker on admirable imprint Craigie Knowes. He's in fine form from the start, peppering a rubbery analogue bassline and rolling breakbeats with evocative pads, dreamy chords and bittersweet melodies on 'Crocodile Tears'. He gleefully joins the dots between surging, TB-303-powered acid house, Detroit futurism and bumpin' U.S house on 'Autoroute', before pressing the button marked "classic electro" on the frankly superb 'Corporate Sound'. To round things off, he adds vintage Korg M-1 organ stabs and synth sounds reminiscent of the lead lines in Orbital's 'Lush 3' to a breathlessly energetic electro-breaks beat. In a word: ace!

Cellular Automata
Review: Five years after the release from the Detroit electro outlet, Cellular Automata is available on CD for the first time. The album's harsh saws and synth bass are offset by a droning ambience, in a hyper futuristic electro-ambience that is simultaneously abrasive and inviting as it rocks between pure electro and techno. Cellular Automata is, at its core, both cinematic and geometric. It wouldn't feel out of place in The Matrix soundtrack, with tracks like 'Ulams Spiral' and 'Spirangle' providing a dynamic sound that lies somewhere between a Berlin dancefloor and a forensics lab. Dopplereffekt has created a mysterious atmosphere with a composition that is deceptively simple, and this album makes for a cerebral listen.

He kicks it off with 'Reflexivity' which pairs silky synths and well swung claps with Detroit techno sounds that Derrick May once dubbed hi-tek soul. 'Aerial' is another majestic machine workout with its own sense of heart and warmth from the finger clicks, bulbous bass and neon, wispy synths. 'Introcity' kees the future vibes alive with more serene synth work and classy techno grooves then 'Non Futuristic' rounds out in buoyant fashion.

Review: We'll never have too much of Ed Upton's slick electro fare, and he's on especially funky form on this new DMX Krew drop for Magnetron. 'Seriously' is a boogie-informed joint with all the sweet and sexy synth licks you would expect, piling the squelchy Moog lines on heavy and aiming squarely at the hips. 'Weird One' nudges some of those boogie motifs towards a curious amalgam somewhere between braindance and synth-pop - that might sound like a funny crossover but it sounds wholly natural. 'Shut Up' is more explicitly leaning towards a freaky proto house sound, while 'Back Again' switches stance for some sneaky electro fare. Quite simply, every track is a masterclass, but then what else would you expect from the mighty DMX?

Review: As any dedicated electro obsessive will happily tell you, Keith Farrugia has been delivering killer cuts - most aimed squarely at peak-time dancefloors - as Sound Synthesis for well over a decade. Even so, the sleazy, energetic and acid-fired bangers he's put out on the Orbital Mechanics imprint, which he founded in 2021, have been 'next-level' good. If you have doubts about this assertion, check out Farrugia's latest EP. It begins with a chunk of grandiose, urgent, TB-303-heavy sci-fi electro (the incredible 'Dark Objects') and ends with the creepy, aggressive and frankly breath-taking 'PSM'. In between, you'll find the melancholic, bittersweet brilliance of 'FH Machines' and the starry, mid-set delight of the surprisingly uplifting 'Perpetual Motion'.

Review: Berlin based DJ and producer Atawel presents a laidback 4 track EP, with electro synth perfect for those hot summer days. 'Easy' sounds like the best holding music you would ever hear, transitioning into the future-funk grooves of 'The Story' - you can't help but bop your head to it, it's infectious. Heading down a chillwave path is 'Underwater Funk', its zingy guitars and electro ambience reminiscent of a late 00s DS game soundtrack about boutiques. 'Conversation' is where it's at, a culmination of all three tracks into one perfect, hazy and hot tune. The sounds just make you want to be poolside sunbathing, sipping an ice cold cocktail in the breeze. The vibes are absolutely unmatched.

Neptune's Lair (Special Edition)
Cat: TRESOR 129CDX. Rel: 02 Sep 22
Review: Drexciya released a lot of seminal work during their tenure, but Neptune's Lair was when James Stinson and Gerald Donald built upon the conceptual depth of their project across an album format for the first time. Released in 1999 on Tresor, the album still sounds leagues ahead of the pack if you think in terms of electro, but to be honest that simple genre tag feels a little reductive at this point. Drexciya were consummate world-builders and they proved this beautifully across achingly beautiful tracks like 'Andreaen Sand Dunes' and 'Polymono Plexusgel', while they still brought serious amounts of funk to 'Habitat of Negative', 'Surface Terrestrial Colonization' and 'Oxyplasmic Gyration Beam'. A perfect album given a proper 'special edition' reissue treatment on CD.

Review: Fresh from delivering the killer General Maintenance EP to No Static / Automatic, Ben Pest bounces his lysergic electro wares over to Mechatronica Music and once again lays down the law in terms of brain-tweaking machine funk. As '8 Octavial' demonstrates, there are no prisoners being taken here as Pest gleefully piles on thick layers of cybernetic sound juggled with a masterful touch. It's absolutely rolling and rave ready, but there's also more than enough detail pinging around these mixes to keep a headphone raver happy. Don't overlook the edgy pings and plongs of 'VCS Wig' or the playful synthetic soul touches of 'Strict Saws', which might well be the best joint on the whole record.

Review: Initially inspired by collaborative jam sessions at Curtis Electronix HQ, Satellite marks the debut of new outfit Gravity Waves, a trio comprising experienced electro producers Kalean, Z.I.P.P.O and CEM343. Musically, it owes a lot to the electro sound of Detroit - and the peerless Drexciya in particular - and could be seen as a whole-hearted tribute to the Motor City machine musicians who have inspired a lot of Europeans over the years. The trio hits the mark from the start, opening with a suitably heavy but spacey club cut ('Memory 3'), before doffing a cap to Cybotron ('Satellite') and rolling out a series of inspiring, high-grade cuts that tend towards the timeless. Arguably best of all though is 'Time Diver', which brilliantly joins the dots between driving futurist techno and the sub-aquatic sounds of Drexciya.

Review: Since making his debut on the first EP from blog-turned-record label Innate back in 2018, Tom Gilbert has quietly amassed a small but perfectly formed discography. The Bristol-based producer specialises in sci-fi techno and deep, melodious electro of the kind that moves the heart and head just as much as the feet. His first outing for Dutch imprint 030303 naturally swims in similar sonic waters, moving between the gorgeously emotive and immersive techno futurism of 'Ylem', the bleeping and bass-heavy sci-fi electro of 'Lucid Dream', where star-fall synth sounds catch the ear, the melody-rich soundscape stomp of 'Shift The Focus' and the vintage IDM-tinged electro brilliance of closing cut 'Are We Alone'.

Review: Dont's limited off shoot serves up a second sizzling 23" here with RLGN collaborating with various different artists. First up though he goes solo with distorted bass and crushing drums making a heavy and hard edge warehouse banger. 'Wounded Cowboy' then comes on strong with Any Act and is laced up with fizzing acid and busted electro drum loops. Locked Club is the collaborator on '2040' and it's a panel-beating techno cut with more textured synth madness adding fuel to the fire. Locked Club is again the partner in sonic crime for the closer 'Angry Pyosa' which spins out on more busted loops and raved up synths.

Review: Johannes Kolter is Kolter, as well as being the artist formerly known as DJOKO, and here he follows up on his very recent Between Fragments album with a cheeky three tracker, once again for the Pilot label. This 12" kicks off with 'Techno Life', which ironically is a breaks/electro hybrid affair with all the hallmarks you could ask for from vocoder vocals to electronic cowbells. 'Can't Stop Rocking' borrows some serious chunks from a very famous electro record made by one of jazz music's legends - that description must surely narrows it down - and adds some tempo and the occasional vocal hook. Then we see proceedings drawn to a close by 'Sorry You Had To Wait So Long', every bit as lively as the other two, spaciously produced and peppered with the subtlest of electro flourishes. All round good work, you have to agree.

A self-described "record label and train station", it's no wonder he's released the 'Transhuman X-Press' from it, as we're jet-propulsed via pistons and steam engines to the stars. Review: Stian Gjevik's work as EOD first reached a wider consciousness through Rephlex some 10 years ago, and since then he's trickled out a thread of winsome braindance through his own Bandcamp and on Bjarki's bbbbbb label. Now he shores up on WeMe, a natural home for many previous Rephlex alumni, with an album which should delight lovers of Gjevik's particular approach to electro. As 'Bwarbler2' beautifully demonstrates, his gift lies in teasing the sweetest melodies out of quirky synth tones, embracing subtle wobbles around the edges and managing to strike a sentimental tone without ever getting sappy. The beats still kick it when they want to, but more importantly this is a record full of human warmth, however synthetic the sound.

Review: "Especial presents a 2 EP live concept collaboration with Berlin’s Giraffi Dog. With live tours cancelled due the on-going changing world, the idea of bringing their live set to vinyl – an opera for your innerspace, while constrained from outerspace – was born.

Setting up Doom Chakra Tapes with DJ Deflektorschild in 2016, Max Webber’s project first released the L'Existence Du Rêve cassette album as a blueprint for the Giraffi Dog sound, with some tracks appearing on the acclaimed vinyl debut for Aiwo Recs, before a split 7” for the WARNING label series followed.

Teaming up with friend Max Heesen (Dessous, Poker Flat) to take the project live, their backgrounds in punk and hip-hop shine in their take on breakbeat driven club culture.

Recording live in the studio, as a different state of meditation, MCPs trigger drum machines, the duality of live synth and vocoder, while tape machines, reverb and FX looped, twisted and filtered for an inter-mind festival

Cut as a continuous mix, tracks like Concorida, Jam X and Multiverse, are a manifestation of their sets dropped from small basements in Berlin to fields in the outskirts of Paris, this first EP acts as a hypothesis for the parallel, the other, the alternate, the infinite. "

Now he's landing on Mechatronica with five new works, leading in with the compression chamber sonics of 'No Way Back' which doesn't need to roll fast to make its imposing presence felt. 'Small Moves' takes the interstellar elevator in pursuit of its own bruising intentions, while 'Go 2 Bed' locks into a more familiar mode of machine funk for the mid-tempo massive. 'Vegetarian At The BBQ' keeps things pinging and ponging atop those hard-ass drums, and 'All Roads Lead To Hear' winds things up with a rapid, bleepy selection for when the night wants to get a touch more delirious.

Now she's landing on Orson with another four track which spell out why she's one of the most essential talents in the contemporary scene, laying down a captivating MO on 'Kellner' in which the kinetic rhythmic elements are offset by some frankly staggering synth sweeps. 'Nagler' keeps the drums tightly packed while exploring a parallel universe of atmospheric textures, and 'Erfle' dips into a pool of nervy lead blips with an almost jazzy quality. 'Plossi' rounds things off with some of the most expressive synthesis on the whole record, confirming Hall's distinctive qualities as an artist bringing something fresh to the well-worn electro template.

Review: Sound Synthesis' Wave Function label is based in Malta - not a place known for its electronic music of any sort, really, but given the strength of these first few outings, it should be. VERTICAL67 is up first with a kicking electro rhythm that has busted synth stabs and warped space-funk bass. It is an irresistible opener followed up by 'Strings' which is more skeletal and dubbed out but still nice and bouncy. 'Light Echoes' drops into a punchy techno vibe with Detroit overtones and 'Signals From The Deep' is a raw workout with slapping hits and brain-fizzing synth lines.

Review: The Jaffa Kid is a pseudonym from long-serving braindancer Daniel Pringle, who also released a lovely 12" as Qeta on La Beaute du Negatif last year. His recent output on Bandcamp has been a lot to catch up with, but he's also snuck out releases on Deeptrax, Obsolete Future, Utter and Pulse State. Now he comes to Cold Blow with another six divine drops from unheralded dimensions, spanning a spectrum of energy levels from the feisty thrust of 'Itled' to the sad-eyed somnambulant electronica closer, 'Dolt'. Grabbing hold of melody with two hands and creating his own variation on the braindance theme, The Jaffa Kid once again proves himself to be a leading light, appearing on a label which is buy on sight.
