Last One Standing
Last One Standing (clear vinyl 7")
Cat: CLMN 208C1. Rel: 03 Dec 21
  1. Last One Standing (part 1) (3:26)
  2. Last One Standing (part 2) (3:49)
Review: This retro-modern split 7" proves Monophonics' reputation as incredible replica artists. 'Last One Standing' comes in two parts, effortlessly emulating the 70s funk and soul styles of Curtis Mayfield and Al Green - albeit with a purer, warmer feel. This seven minute cut of funk euphoria is full of fat bass licks and false endings, pigeonholing the pimpin' drama that was soul in Mayfield's time. "I will be the last one standing" is the mantra, lending the whole song an extra cinematic mood, with a climaxxing faux-instrumental ensuing towards its second half.

The Big Bonus Beats
Cat: SRW 023. Rel: 02 Dec 21
  1. The Big Bonus Beats (A Jorun Bombay edit) (2:26)
  2. Jamaican Funk (A Jorun Bombay edit) (4:40)
Review: Jorun Bombay is back once again with more of his masterful beat mash ups and beat juggling 7"s. This is his second this week - well, it's a black wax version of the same EP where the other is bright pink, both on Soundweight. He opens up with 'The Big Bonus Beats' (A Jorun Bombay edit) which has crashing drum hits and an iconic vocal mashed together with some funky guitar riffs and plenty of big, oversized and splashing cymbals. 'Jamaican Funk (A Jorun Bombay edit)' is a super sweet jam with a plunging synth bassline and more classic vocal samples that lend it a neo-soul feel.

Review: Despite the universal imposition of lockdown, DJ Harvey's Mercury Rising nights have made a lasting impression on one particular Ibizan hideaway - the world-renowned rock n' roll themed hotel, Pikes, a favourite of Ibiza titans Fatboy Slim and Patrick Topping. To keep the spark of this monthly party alive, Harvey launched his 'Mercury Rising' compilations, putting only the best of Ibiza's balearic talents on display. The third and final volume is now finally in our mitts, and what an impressive array: odysseys of aquatic, twanging sound come courtesy of choice cuts by local mainstays Kraak & Smaak, Project Sandro and MODE.

Let's Stay Together
Let's Stay Together (hand-stamped 7")
Cat: BNG 004. Rel: 03 Dec 21
  1. Let's Stay Together (3:50)
  2. Let's Dub Together (3:46)
Review: There's a pleasing "going back to his roots" feel about this release from Bristol luminary Rob Smith AKA RSD. Unlike much of the material he's released under the alias, which draws on dub, hip-hop and dubstep for inspiration, this seven-inch recalls the early days of the "Bristol sound", where Smith and Ray Mighty were responsible for producing tons of classic street soul-informed fare. Denise Morgan delivers a superbly soulful, glassy-eyed rendition of Al Green's 'Let's Stay Together' atop an attractive, turn-of-the-90s style street soul beat rich in classic hip-hop breaks, fluid piano and stirring synth strings. The accompanying 'Let's Dub Together' version, a more stripped-back and sub-heavy affair rich in reverb-laden vocal snippets, is equally as inspired.

Review: Calvin "Popcorn" Ward is one of those legendary musical figures form time gone by. He put out just one album and a couple of Eps, but they were good enough to secure him an enduring elegy with funk and soul fans. His Prime Choice album came on Shanell in 1983 and the one copy currently for sale on second-hand sites is over 630 quid. Thankfully Mad About has assembled this heavyweight reissue. Sentimental soul, analogue disco and lo-fi funk all characterise each tune, as does Calvin's own vocals which range from upbeat and positive to heartbroken and raw. A real gem.

Review: Master cut and paste man Jorun Bombay doesn't leave it long between his mash-ups. The leading beatmaker has put out plenty this year but still finds time for one more in the form of this new 7" on Soundweight. He opens up with 'The Big Bonus Beats' (A Jorun Bombay edit) which has crashing drum hits and an iconic vocal mashed together with some funky guitar riffs and plenty of big, oversized and splashing cymbals. Take Them In Prayer

  1. Take Them In Prayer (4:04)
  2. Let Him Be Your Everything (3:43)
Review: Another week brings another monster new 45 from the incomparable Athens of the North. This time out it is an early 80s bit of irresistible gospel, disco and boogie from Earl Young. 'Take Them In Prayer' is pure gold thanks to its tight and funky rhythm section, the delicate thinking on the keys and the heart aching vocals of earl Young that soar up top. Flip it over and on the reverse of this one and you will find 'Let Him Be Your Everything,' a quiet love song with only melancholic keys for company. It's the complete opposite of the a-side but is just as devastating for different reasons.

Review: West Coast Revival, as the name suggests, was a band of male soul vocalists from California. They put out just three singles and one album, West Coast Revival, in 1977, which is a breezy and heart-swelling collection of upbeat surf-funk gems. It is one of those that will cost you a pretty penny on the second-hand market if you can find a copy, and the sort of easy to listen to album that never grows old. The vocal harmonies are buttery sweet, the grooves and tight and smooth, and the overall sound is polished but never overly so.

Through It All
Cat: BCR 099. Rel: 19 Nov 21
  1. Through It All (3:29)
  2. Under The Sun (3:24)
Review: Five years after her last album on the Big Crown label, Lady Wray is soon to serve up a follow up in the form of Piece of Me. That arrives in January next year and is proceeded by this taster 7" featuring two singles from it. They showcase Wray's take on classic soul: her vocals do plenty of heavy lifting, and the instrumental funk all around her is steeped in the classic traditions, but it all comes with an extra raw edge, an urgency and crispness that brings it right up to date. 'Through It All' is a confessional that is powered by tight drums, where 'Under The Sun' is a more blissed out vibe.

Review: American Bobbi Humphrey is one of the most well loved jazz flautists. She turned out plenty of vibrant albums, none less so than this, Fancy Dancer, which was her fifth. It came on Blue Note in 1975 and is full of all killer no filler gold. It also saw her, along with producers the Mizell Brothers aka Larry and Fonce, come up with a fresh new largely instrumental funk sound. Weaving in everything from world music to soul-jazz to club music to pop, it's a widescreen sound that is packed with uplifting flute from Humphrey and lush production that reveals something new with each listen.

Love Has Found Its Way
Love Has Found Its Way (transparent blue vinyl 7")
Cat: VR 06. Rel: 22 Nov 21
  1. Love Has Found Its Way (guitar instrumental version) (4:38)
  2. Love Has Found Its Way (dub guitar) (4:38)
Review: Earlier in the year, Robert 'Dubwise' Browne followed up his superb, soft-focus reggae-soul cover of 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine' with 'Love Has Found Its Way', a fine hook-up with vocalist Maya Hatch that effortlessly joined the dots between samba, lovers rock and sultry downtempo soul. On this "45" he delivers two instrumental revisions of the cut, both of which make superb use of the glistening, fluid jazz guitar solos that only made a brief appearance on the original release. The A-side 'Guitar Instrumental Version' sounds like a future Balearic classic, with his Peter Green-esque solos tumbling down across a shuffling samba rhythm. The flipside 'Dub Guitar' version explores similar sonic territory, amplifying the bass a little while making good use of reverb and delay effects. In a word: gorgeous.

  1. I'm Here (4:03)
  2. The Moment (4:35)
Review: 'I'm Here' is the glorious second single from Cornell CC Carter's album, Next Life. It is a superbly seductive and go-slow stepper with neat bass riffs spaciously drawn out beneath acoustic guitar motifs and lumpy drums. The vocal is butter sweet and as the track rolls on the chords grow ever more lush. After that memorising a-side comes a modern take on Curtis Mayfield style soul complete with the steamy spoken vocals, screen string sweeps and pillowy chords. Finishing it off in style is a bassline to die for.

Review: Since emerging in 2019, Inflo's socially conscious, politically charged Sault collective has delivered a string of inspired, impossible-to-pigeonhole albums that thoughtfully reflect on what it is to be black and British in the 21st century. Nine, the crew's latest set (and first of 2021) is every bit as incendiary, versatile and impactful as its predecessors, with the 10 collected tracks touching on everything from drowsy R&B, spoken word, classic soul and post-punk rock, to UK bass mutations, gospel, jazz-funk, Charles Stepney style excursions and hazy downtempo beats. Mixing live instrumentation and electronics with a wealth of spoken, sung and rapped vocals, Nine is a genuinely stunning, thought-provoking album full of razor-sharp lyrics and brilliantly executed musical movements.

  2. Take Care Your Homework Friend (2:27)
Review: The unequalled Soul Jazz label is serving up some monster funk this month and they don't come much bigger than these two cuts from Chuck Carbo. Opener 'Can I Be Your Squeeze' is a super catchy, break heavy and funk fulled party jam to destroy the floor. Written and produced by the celebrated Eddie Bo, it comes with big drums from New Orleans stick man James Black. On the flip is the ever so slightly more mellow but not less dance 'Take Care Your Homework Friend.' These have long been hard to find and now come pressed nice and loud on fresh wax.

  1. Sin Control (3:05)
  2. Sin Control (feat Molly Lewis - instrumental) (5:10)
Review: Having previously been famed for re-imagining classic soul and funk cuts - albeit with a pleasingly retro-futurist twist - Trish Toledo returns to Now-Again Records with something fresh: a co-composition of her own. In its' original full vocal form, 'Sin Control' is a jangling, atmospheric Spanish-language soul number that combines a loose, languid groove with strummed acoustic guitars, retro-sounding electric guitar licks and Tijuana brass style horns. Over on the flip, guest Molly Lewis comes to the fore on an instrumental take laden with mazy Moog style synth solos and melodic whistling - think Stereolab doing semi-acoustic soul, and you're close.

  2. Treat Me Better (3:31)
Review:  Vocalist Jodie Richardson continues to assert herself as a modern soul sensation with this new one on Original Gravity. Featuring Neil Anderson on production, drums, bass and keys, this one could be a double a-side such is the equally brilliance of both tunes. 'Pushover' is a powerful tune with driving rhythms backed by big horns as Jodie's beautiful vocals race along up top. It's steeped in classic soul references and is brilliantly unrelenting. On the flip side, 'Treat Me Better' is another belter, this time rolling a little deeper with empowering lyrics about searching for someone better over super tight stick work.

You Are My Dream
Cat: PEPITE 09. Rel: 11 Nov 21
  1. You Are My Dream (4:58)
  2. I Have A Good Job (5:38)
Review: This 45 from Pepite should excite all those who dig high-quality, little-known boogie-era brilliance. Both tracks originally featured on little-known French artist Nel Oliver's second, self-titled album, which hit stores in 1980, but have since become secret weapons for a handful of European record collectors. A-side 'You Are My Dream' is smooth, soulful and groovy, with Nel adding emotive, accented English language vocals to a warming, laidback boogie groove full of metronomic bass, bongo-laced drums, crunchy guitars, fluttering flutes and starry synths. Flipside 'I Have a Good Job' is arguably even better, with Oliver's echo-laden vocals rising above heavy Clavinet ruffs, spacey synths and more luscious, laidback grooves.

Review: The mysterious Sault troupe is back with a call to action and revolutionary soul soundtrack that really bangs the box. "Ain't nothing gunna keep us silent" the lead singer yelps on 'Stop Der', which is an immediate banger after the soothing ambience and closely mic-ed whispers of the opener, which muse on what it means to be black. The rest of the record is a hard hitting mix of crisp drums and empowering vocals, with elements of classic soul as well as contemporary jazz colouring the grooves. This is powerful music with an even more powerful message.

Review: Network released their one and only album I Need You originally back in 1984. The US electrofunk project was made up of various studio musicians from the funk world and weirdly, this album was never actually released in the United States. Now a repress rights that wrong and allows people all over the world to reveal in the boogie baselines of old school jams like 'Pump It Up' and the angular, crashing beats and funky bass riffs of 'Hard To Give It Up.' There are more upbeat and busy numbers like 'Somewhere Hanging Over My Head' for peak time moments and Prince-liked funk bangers such as 'Taste Yo Lips' helping to make this a must cop.

Review: Originally pressed (on a limited run) in 2013, LA Latin funk troupe Boogaloo Assassins have reissued these two spellbinding cover versions again due to public demand. Still on a highly limited run, both cuts need to be in your collection: Dawn Penn's "No No No" gets a strict samba switch with lavish percussion and consistent vocal harmonies throughout while Sonny Henry's "Evil Ways" (best known from its Santana cover) gets the dreamy instrumental treatment where the horns and glocks do the narrating over a tight bed of wood blocks, shakers and liquid Rhodes. Killer stuff and Juno is one of the few stores outside of USA which is carrying the 45. Don't Sleep !

  2. Anderson Brothers - "I Can See Him Loving You" (2:48)
Review: Outta Sight's third 7" is another vital pair of hugely desirable, collectible, and rare Northern Soul singles. They are both taken from the new Club Classics album of remastered floor filler anthems and are well deriving of their own slice of wax. These singles from Connie Laverne and The Anderson Brother were put out first in 1974/95 shortly before the GSF label folded. They were DJ-only promos which accounts for their rareness and come with plenty of rumours attached. Musically they are gems that were played from the birth of the scene at Manchester's Twisted Wheel to it's heyday at Wigan Casino.

Review: They may only have emerged in 2019, but Inflo's socially conscious, politically charged, impossible-to-pigeonhole Sault collective has already delivered a string of vital albums. Mixing live instrumentation, electronics and a wealth of guest vocals, Nine is a genuinely stunning, thought-provoking album full of razor-sharp lyrics and brilliantly executed musical movements.

Review: Speedometer are an outfit with more than 20 years behind them, and they grew from a four-piece soul and funk covers crew in the South East of the UK to a serious creative entity with a towering discography. Most of their music comes out on Freestyle these days, and so the label have done the right thing and tracked back to reissue their early deep funk masterpiece, This Is Speedometer. It's got all the raw, in-the-room spirit you'd expect of a band cutting their teeth, which makes the music all the more exciting. From vocal jams like 'Wait Up' to the springy breaks-in-waiting of 'Mullet', this is pure heat from a seriously talented crew who play it like they mean it. They may be a little slicker these days, but there's so much to enjoy about these nothing-to-lose sessions from Speedometer.

Salsoul: The Reflex Revisions Part 2
VARIOUS
Cat: SALSBMG 43LP. Rel: 19 Nov 21
  1. Inner Life - "I Like It Like That" (7:26)
  2. Metropolis - "I Love New York" (8:30)
  3. Leroy Burgess - "Heavenly" (10:02)
  4. Aurra - "A Little Love" (7:45)
Review: Unlike most disco re-edit EPs, Salsoul's latest instalment of 'Reflex Revisions' are "proper" remixes, making full use of original master stems and session tapes sourced from the parent artists themselves. With all four tracks handled by French producer and remixer The Reflex, we know we're in good hands here - he's been at it since 2012. Reflex Revisions don't just add a janky kick beneath a beatgridded 16-bar loop, but rather, they move and sway with the tracks' original feels. Our case in point: 'A Little Love' completely reimagines the drum section found on Aurra's 1983 original, making the whole sonic experience much clearer and brighter. As much can be said for Metropolis' downtempo 'I Love New York', on which Reflex here makes the song grander, wider. Compared to most re-editors, this is an impressive feat occurring in a different ballpark.

What Color?
  1. What Color? (3:55)
  2. What Color? (instrumental) (3:55)
Review: Before making it big with Maze, Frankie Beverly was the man behind Raw Soul, a heavyweight, politically conscious band whose fuzzy, full-throttle sound sat somewhere between the J.B's and Sly & The Family Stone. The band's most famous moment was 1975 single 'Color Blind', which was originally recorded as 'What's The Color?' Here that never-before-heard recording is finally issued. Rich in fuzz-soaked horns, crunchy drum-breaks, weighty bass and clipped funk guitar licks, the track features some superb, James Brown style lead vocals from Beverly. Brilliantly, there's also a chance to savour the unheard Raw Soul instrumental version, which features an extended, DJ-friendly drum solo midway through. A slice of history that's well worth picking up. As played by DJ Koco....

  1. Sparkle (1985) (4:21)
  2. Sparkle (2014) (4:25)
Review: Expert Hawaiian label Aloha Got Soul has put together a lovely little green 45 here with some serious seductive and steamy sax led sounds from brass-heavy funk band Greenwood. They were everywhere in the 70s, playing all over the island under guidance from bandleader Robin Kimura, and recently got back together for some reunion shows. Here they serve up their original 1985 version of Tatsuro Yamashita's 'Sparkle' as well as a 2014 update, and both are glorious bits of heart warming soul. The older version is dripping with libidinousness thanks to the sax and vocals and for us is the best of the two.

Come Dance With Me: Parts 1 & 2
  1. Come Dance With Me (part 1) (4:57)
  2. Come Dance With Me (part 2) (3:23)
Review: Honeycomb Music's love affair with Josh Milan continues after the success of the ongoing 'Shapes, Colors, and Magic' series. This time they have pressed up a sweet 7" featuring 'Come Dance With Me: Parts 1 & 2' It is a tune about a man who desires a woman who is preoccupied with someone else. It's a bittersweet sound, with Josh's incomparable vocals, soaring backing vocals and a loose, organic house vibe on the a-side. The flips side, part two, becomes a much more Latin tinged and jazz-flecked bit of funk and soul that showcases Milan's unmatched talents.

  21. Ain't No Love In The Heart Of The City (bonus track) (4:14)
Review: First released in 2019, the self-titled debut album from multi-instrumentalist Adrian Quesada's Black Pumas band is a glorious homage to the glory days of psychedelic soul in the late 1960s and early '70s. Quesada's authentically old-sounding production and the band's instrumentation draws heavily on the likes of Tower of Power, Sly and the Family Stone, Rotary Connection, Terry Callier and the Chambers Brothers, with mic man Eric Burton providing effortlessly emotive and impassioned vocal performances. This 'deluxe edition' expands the album over a double album and bonus 7", via a series of similarly killer cuts such as 'Fast Car', 'Politicians in My Eyes' and a revelatory psych-rock cover of Beatles classic 'Elanor Rigby'.

Heart Of The Groove
  1. Heart Of The Groove (Ecstatic B-Boy remix) (4:27)
  2. This Ain't No Game (Go! Go! Go!) (3:43)
Review: Heat Rock Records' latest double-dose of cut and paste madness is as incendiary as you'd expect, with both tracks adding elements of classic dancefloor workouts to fat beats and plenty of added percussion. Chicago's Altered Tapes handles side A, thrillingly re-imagining Dee-Lite classic 'Groove is In The Heart' by utilising more percussive elements (including a killer, cowbell-driven drum-break) from some of the tunes that the New York band originally sampled on their chart-topping house classic. B-Boys and B-Girls the world over will love it! On the flip, Bay Area native King Most combines the vocals from a Salsoul disco classic to a backing track that cleverly combines elements from a Ramsay Lewis style jazz number and a JB's-esuqe funk bomb.

The Snake

  1. Al Wilson - "The Snake" (Senior Citizens edit) (4:16)
  2. Bobby Hebb - "You Don't Know What You've Got Until You Lose It" (Senior Citizens edit) (3:56)
Review: For those who don't keep a close eye on the international funk rework scene, Senior Citizens are one of the most prolific and well-regarded remix duos in Greece. Here they make their first appearance on Soul Flip with two club-ready revisions that sound like peak-time anthems in waiting. They begin by giving their interpretation of Al Wilson classic 'The Snake', adding his vocals and much of the original instrumentation (trademark horns included) to a beefed-up, non-stop club groove. They offer us a breather of sorts on side B, attractively shuffling their way through a breakbeat-powered, string-laden re-edit of Bobby Hebb's luscious soul number 'You Don't Know What You've Got Until You Lose It'.
