Review: Adiel is resident at Goa Club in Rome, and over the past couple of years she's quietly issued 12"s that complement her DJ style with angular, experimental electronic variations. While the ingredients (drum machines, errant synths) may be familiar, the patterns and shapes are not. An icy dread lingers over the likes of "Vibra" with its uneasy reverb space and subtly unsettling undertones, but this is also utterly seductive dance music too. "Ritmo" in particular has a truly meditative quality to it that strikes even deeper thanks to the tense, percussion-led atmosphere. "Melodica" pours a little more techno propulsion into the mix, highlighting the compatability Adiel's creations have with more linear forms of drum machine science.

  3. Luca Ballerini - "Amore & Psiche II" (Eduardo De La Calle remix) (7:11)
Review: Two years have passed since Adriatique founded the Siamese label. Naturally, the Zurich duo has decided the time is right to get some fresh remixes of classic cuts from the imprint's rapidly expanding catalogue. Fittingly, the A-side is taken up by Sebastian Mullaert's fine rework of Adriatique's "Patterns of Eternity", which maintains a fine balance between early morning deep techno hypnotism and drifting late night melodiousness. The Siamese Soundsystem's rework of Stereocalypse's "Lace Star" is a much more rolling techno workout, rich in bubbly electronic motifs and ear-catching shaker percussion, while Eduardo De La Calle's version of Luca Ballerini's "Amore & Psiche II" is deep, low-slung and mesmerizing.

Review: Some 24 years into his career as The Advent, British techno stalwart Cisco Ferreira continues to deliver heavyweight records at an impressive rate. Here he makes his debut on Ben Klock's quietly impressive imprint, offering up a three-track missive in his inimitable style. Interestingly, there's plenty of subtle variety across the EP. Compare and contrast opener "High Horse", a formidably fuzzy and metallic chunk of peak-time techno sleaze rich in wonky vocal samples and booming bass, and the jacking techno loop-funk of "Sound Pove", which boasts plenty of restless drum machine handclaps and trippy musical samples. Sandwiched in between you'll find "Un Named", a smoother and deeper peak-time workout that's nevertheless still tough as teak.

Review: Back in 2016, legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen approached techno pioneer Jeff Mills with the idea of working together. A series of live gigs and off-the-radar studio sessions followed, with the first fruits of their joint efforts finally appearing on this must-have 10". As you'd expect, the duo's collaborative work combines Allen's traditional Nigerian polyrhythms, traditional Afrobeat instrumentation, and the far-sighted, sci-fi inspired electronic futurism that has always marked out Mills' work. The result is a quartet of cuts that could arguably be described as retro-futurist Afro-tech - all delay-laden beats, basslines and organs subtly sparring with gentle acid lines, Motor City electronics, beguiling deep space textures and shimmering, 31st century motifs. It's arguably Allen's stylistic contributions that dominate, but that's no bad thing.

Review: After taking some time off following the release of last year's acclaimed Nost album, Ellen Allien returns to action. The veteran German DJ/producer is in fine form on this surprise EP for Boddika's inspired Nonplus label. Epic A-side "Take a Stand" is particularly potent with Allien opting to pepper a clanking, distorted, off-kilter broken techno groove with creepy industrial electronics and her own stylish spoken word vocal snippets. It's unfeasibly weighty in the best possible way. Over on side B, "Trigger" sits somewhere between mind-altering Berghain techno and Panoramabar tech-house, while "Flying Objects" is a bubbly and occasionally twisted chunk of alien techno hypnotism.

Review: We've been rather impressed by the early outings of Violet's Naive label, which here offers a debut to Swedish DJ/producer and fellow rising star Almaty. "Gennaro" is rather impressive; a raw and bustling fusion of snappy and metallic machine drums, pots and pans percussion, leftfield techno riffs and lilting, becalmed melodies. It comes accompanied by a trio of tasty remixes. First Octa Octa reaches for the TB-303 acid lines and lays down a heavyweight tribal techno version, before Photonz serves up a fine fusion of ragged acid house and ambidextrous broken beats. To round off an excellent package, "Endian" wraps alien electronics and spinetingling dream house chords around a pounding, Livity Sound style broken techno groove.

  2. Gravity's Pitfalls (6:13)
Review: Kl.ne and CRESC continue to developed their APHTC project with two new rhythmic spells on brand new kinetic body music label Arcane Patterns. Wild freestyle percussion, fractured breaks and an all round physical sensation to both sides, once again we're hurled into unchartered sonic territory. "When Grounds Shift" sideswipes from the off with a curious polyrhythm that sits somewhere between IG Culture Shackleton. "Gravity's Pitfalls" rolls with a little more of a conventional sense of techno and tribal momentum while still sounding like nothing else on this planet. Follow the patterns...

  2. A Mental Image
Review: Charles Noel has been enjoying a resurgence of late, with his early explorations as Archetype resurfacing on a number of reissue labels. Future Primitive have tapped Noel up for two cuts that typify his left-of-centre approach, leading in with the sharp-edged beat excursion "Form Of Change" that will appeal to all lovers of reduced, off-kilter rhythm workouts. "A Mental Image" adopts a softer stance, laying out a bed of silken pads and errant tweaks that tap into the head-tripping mood of vintage techno while maintaining the future-minded thrust that makes true machine music timeless, whichever era it was crafted in.

Review: While some previous AM outings have focused solely on re-edits of quirky and obscure records, this EP boasts all original material from a Romanian producer with a passion for intoxicating electronics, slow grooves and mind-altering concept albums. The six tracks here are split into two distinct camps. On the A-side, the AM crew has gathered together some of his most atmospheric chuggers, including the doomy, Section 25-influenced weirdness of "Articulat" and the bustling psychedelic trip that is "Mean Machine". The flipside is a little less tightly focused but no less impressive, with the warbling operatic vocals, head-nodding percussive hypnotism and late night ambient textures of "Love Affair" standing out.

  2. Frigo (6:34)
Review: "Fluid as a paintbrush yet precise as a scalpel" is how ESP Institute boss Lovefingers has described these two tracks from sometime Gifted Culture Collective member Autre. It's a fairly apt description. Check, for example, A-side "Everybody In The Past", where colourful, broad-strokes riffs, paint-roller chords, mangled acid lines and intoxicating synth solos decorate a bustling rhythm track. The delightly jaunty, sunny and percussive flip-side "Frigo", meanwhile, is the audio equivalent of an early period Picasso painting being paraded around a small Mediterranean town accompanied by a synthesizer-wielding house band. Which, we think you'll agree, is a very good thing indeed.

Review: After slowly establishing his career via a handful of tidy EPs released over an eight-year period, Evan Baggs has really hit his stride in 2018. This outing on Partout is not only the American's fourth vinyl excursion of the year, but arguably his strongest, too. He hits the ground running on opener "New Language", where vintage Steel City bleeps rise above doom-laden chords and crunchy electronic percussion, before peppering another drum machine rhythm with spacey electro style synth lines on "5 Phased". Over on the flip, Baggs successfully breaks up the beats, ratchets up the sub bass and reaches for the deep electronics on "As It Is", while closer "Bo Jangles" is a fine slab of foreboding, acid-flecked late night techno funk.

With previous releases on top labels like CLR, Kombination Research and Cocoon - you can trust this veteran A.M. specialist. From the glacial and cavernous "Clouds" and the introspective dub of "Contour" nailing that Basic Channel vibe of old. On the flip, we get two versions of "Zenstory". The first (prelude) being a chilling ambient version while the second is a stripped back epic that builds full of tension and suspense throughout.

Review: Bergsonist is Moroccan born and NYC based Selwa Abd, who has had releases on Styles Upon Styles, Borft and Angoisse amongst others. Her uncompromising and otherworldly creations on the Solyaris EP are an ode to the present broken education system that allowed her to sustain her dreams in New York. As an immigrant, she felt uncertain of the future and was able to channel all that anxiety through music, during her time of studies. Tough and gutural lo-fi techno workouts here, like on dusty warehouse jams "Conflict In Yemen" or the title track, to the rusty tunnel vision of "Former Alien Who Has Been Naturalized As A US Citizen" that was well tripped out.

  1. Your Mind (8:29)
Review: Some collaborative business from the mighty Drumcode camp, as boss man Adam Beyer joins forces with long-serving label artist Bart Skils for the very first time. There's just a single track (albeit pressed on to rather nifty looking marbled vinyl) to get your teeth into, but it's impactful. The duo has put a thunderous, mind-altering arpeggio bassline and heavy kick-drum/hi-hat pattern at the heart of the action, variously decorating it with long, drawn-out organ chords, creepy held synthesizer notes and - most potently - a beguiling vocal sample that neatly summarises the Drumcode clubbing ethos ("you... you're losing your mind"). In other words, it sounds like a future big room techno anthem.

Review: Drumcode head honcho Adam Beyer and Chicagoan legend Curtis Jones (aka Green Velvet) had discussed writing music together for a long time. Also, Beyer's protege Layton Giordani had admired the mohawked Jones' work for as long as he could remember. When he got to DJ alongside him at Belfast's Shine - the spark and subsequent friendship was immediate. The outcome of this respected trio's musical journey comes in the form of "Space Date" which will be familiar to many who've followed their sets over recent months. Featuring a relentless main room stomp with steely hats and droney synth leads, all accompanied by Green Velvet's trademark vocal delivery. The thunderous peak time energy of "Rome Future" is likewise guaranteed to rock the house - that killer Reese bassline particularly is sure to blow the doors off!

Review: Digging deep into the Chicago Rave vaults to re-issue the debut EP from Billy Nightmare aka "Mystic Bill" Torres. Growing up in Miami, Bill was involved in various parts of the music industry, from working at Flamingo Record Pool, to playing guitar for the band Life In Sodom (80's Synth/Goth band). His interest in both House & Industrial music inspired him to make his move to the Windy City. Bill quickly became involved in the night scene with residencies at clubs like Shelter, Crobar, & Smart Bar. His studio work began with a remix of Kay Ladrae's "Lack Of Love" with Vince Lawrence, followed by a string of releases, including an LP on Trax Records. He has recently relaunched two record labels and several releases and remixes out each year.

'Reality Check' was released in 1996 on Woody McBride's label Sounds. Originally the project was to be titled " Billy's Nightmare", but to avoid being jinxed for life, Torres decided to switch it to Billy Nightmare. He put the Mystic Bill alias aside, got a hair cut, changed his sound and became this new persona. 'Reality Check' consists of 4 tracks, recorded at Mirage Studios in Chicago in 1996. Two tracks on the A-side are dark thumpers and will haunt your head for days. Side B has 2 versions of the same song, lighter and funkier in mood both show the diversity Mystic Bill is capable of producing. All songs have been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. Each EP is housed in a custom designed jacket by Eloise Leigh featuring a 90s photo of Billy Nightmare staring into TV static and includes a postcard with notes.

The Icelandic producer's latest release is his eighth in total for the label, and follows a trio of albums and a quartet of 12" singles. It's an intriguing EP, all told, with Bjarki combining experimental-minded sounds, motifs and production techniques with bombastic, four-to-the-floor techno rhythms. The results are generally intense and impressive, with highlights including the surging, Surgeon-seque madness of "Hatann Satann", the insanely bass heavy and energy-packed "Oli Gumm 2-2", and the crackling, spaced-out creepiness of the metallic and otherworldly "Fork2-2".
