Sequencers

A sequencer is a device which allows you to program and control other audio equipment using analogue or digital control signals (‘sequencing’ the equipment). Most commonly associated with synthesisers, you can sequence any MIDI or CV gear, including samplers, drum machines, Eurorack modular synths and even some effects units. These days, there’s a blurred line between old-school sequencers, MIDI controllers, samplers and modern grooveboxes, but our range of hardware sequencers allows you to control your synths, drum machines and even software over MIDI, USB or analogue CV/gate signals. Once you’ve decided which method works best for your studio setup, you can take your pick from various different approaches, such as step sequencers, multi-track sequencers or pad-style drum sequencers. Brands including Arturia, Korg and Doepfer provide options to suit every approach to music making.

Notes: The ultimate sequencing powerhouse.

BeatStep Pro is unique: a world-class controller, performance sequencer and composing tool all in one very connectible package.

BeatStep Pro is unlike anything you have ever used on stage or in the studio. Wherever you are, whatever gear is available, taking control of the creative process has never been so easy.

Step into the spotlight

Two independent melodic sequencers and a drum sequencer put thousands of on-the-spot ideas at your disposal.

With BeatStep Pro you are master of the performance, taking full control of virtual devices, analog and digital instruments, drum machines and iPad apps all at once. 16 Projects are instantly accessible, each of which contains 16 sequences per melodic sequencer and 16 patterns for the drum sequencer. Korg SQ-1 Analogue Step Sequencer
Cat: 561425 Rel: 02 Feb 15

2 x 8 step sequencer with a variety of sequencer modes and battery operation
Notes: When the classic MS-20 analog synthesizer appeared in 1978, it had a trusted partner in the SQ-10 step sequencer. Now, after thirty years, the MS-20 has been reborn as the MS-20 mini, and the SQ-10 has evolved into the more modern SQ-1.

The SQ-1 is a compact step sequencer with 2 x 8 steps. It's wealth of connection jacks allows it to be connected to the MS-20 and a variety of other synthesizers. Vintage analog synths or the latest compact synths can be controlled from this single unit. You can also switch between a variety of synthesizer modes and use the step buttons to create performances overflowing with spontaneity, just as when using a volca unit.

Liberate yourself from the numerically-bound parameter editing that's typical on a DAW; you'll enjoy truly musical inspiration as you train your ears and concentrate on what your fingertips are doing. Don't miss the experience of music that's driven by your instinct.

Rather than the commonly used V/Oct standard, the CV design of the MS-20 always used the Hz/V standard that provides excellent pitch stability limiting the step sequencers that are able to correctly control the MS-20. As a descendant of the SQ-10, the SQ-1 supports the Hz/V standard, enabling it to perfectly control the MS-20 or MS-20 mini. It goes without saying the V/Oct standard is also supported, and the voltage level of the CV output and polarity of the GATE output can be specified as appropriate for the device you've connected. This versatility will enable you to control a wide variety of other synthesizers as well.

As a connector, the SQ-1 provides two CV/GATE OUT channels, the standard MIDI OUT and USB MIDI, littleBits out (to connect to the littleBits synth kit by littleBits Electronics Inc.), plus the SYNC IN/OUT channel that allows you to connect to the volca series and monotribe. Compact and complete with all the functions you need, the SQ-1 is the ideal hardware sequencer.

The SQ-1 provides two channels (A and B) of 8-step sequencer that can operate consecutively, or be used in a variety of other modes. For example, you can run A and B following each other to function as a 16-step sequencer, ignore the order and make the steps play randomly, or use A and B to control different parameters as they run in parallel. From simple sequences to complex changes, you can choose from a variety of modes to suit your needs.

The 2 x 8 step buttons can be used in the usual way to turn notes on/off, but you can also use the MODE button to switch their function, opening up powerful possibilities such as letting you "perform" the sequence itself, as on a volca unit.

"Active Step" lets you skip steps mid-way through a sequence, and "Step Jump" lets you instantly play just the step that you press, producing irregular rhythms or effects that are reminiscent of short loops. "Slide" produces an effect in which steps are connected smoothly; using this to control a synth bass is an easy way for anyone to generate an acid sound.

Packed with carefully selected functionality, the SQ-1 features a compact and very sturdy sheet-metal body. Placed beside the MS-20 series, you'll notice a sense of solidity that gives the impression they were manufactured in the same era. The unit can operate on two AA batteries or on USB bus power.

Sequence step resolution is selectable as quarter notes, eighth notes, or 16th notes.

You can specify the way in which the step knobs control the pitch. The knob values can specify the pitch directly, or they can specify the closest note in a major, minor, or chromatic scale.

Squarp Instruments Hapax Professional Standalone Sequencer
Cat: 868177 Rel: 01 Mar 23

Genuine centerpiece of a setup, it offers every tool needed to compose songs in the studio and perform them on stage.
Notes: A true MIDI powerhouse, based around a 128-pad matrix and 16-track MIDI sequencer with slick programming workflow and Ableton-style pattern mode for live performance.

*** Version 2.0 updates - January 2024 ***

In this version, Squarp have put a lot of effort into improving the ergonomics and screen designs.

As for features, the focus has been on expanding patterns from 8 to 16 per track. Follow-actions have been introduced to bring more life to your sections, adding logic and randomness to the construction of your tracks.

A new MixMute mode has been created to enhance live performances, improve transitions between projects and arm your tracks for multitrack recording.

Now you can engage in multi-track recording and capture on multiple tracks simultaneously.

Two new effects are making their debut as well: FX ECHO, the best delay Squarp have made so far, and FX OUTPUT, allowing rerouting to a different output in the middle of the effect chain.

You can now Import/ExportMIDI files, either to save and reuse your own patterns in different projects or to load complex MIDI files from a computer.

The Curve algorithm is now accessible in automation mode, Squarp have added a track compensation mechanism and Auto-load.

Supplier's Notes:
Professional standalone sequencer

Genuine centerpiece of a setup, it offers every tool needed to compose songs in the studio and perform them on stage. From vintage to modern synths, from modular systems to your favourite DAW, Hapax can sequence and synchronize all your gear, while bringing you carefully crafted tools, designed for maximizing creativity.

The midi powerhouse.

Up to a million notes and events

16 tracks per project, 8 patterns per track.

Thanks to its dual-processor architecture, Hapax can record and transform tremendous amounts of data in no time, without a hitch.

Express yourself.

MPE compatibility

Hapax is the first hardware sequencer that fully supports MIDI Polyphonic Expression. Record the finest gestures, slides and articulations of your playing, without compromising quality.

Around the clock performance.
Dual-project architecture

Hapax can handle two separate and independent projects, that can be played simultaneously. This lets you compose or load an entire project while the first one is already playing, enabling endless sets and seamless transitions.

Dawless is more.

Hapax offers broad connectivity options for perfect integration in any setup.

Adaptive workflow.
Several ways to write music
Writing a melody: use a polyphonic or MPE track and take advantage of the advanced step sequencer to quickly lay down notes or edit your live recording.

Composing a beat: control up to 8 different instruments with a single track. The drum sequencer is tailored for very easy rhythm writing and jamming.

Real-time midi effects.

Bring your synths to life

Hapax embeds multiple real-time, polyphonic, non-destructive midi effects, as well as project-wide assignable LFOs. Each parameter of these effects can be automated in the dedicated mode, and processed in the mod matrix, which provides even more ways of routing and modulating.

Powerful composition tools.

Algorithms

Powerful tools for offline note transformation and generation, right at your fingertips. Harmonically invert your motive, generate a controlled-random counter-melody, slowly ramp up the velocities, emphasize every fifth 8th note...

Hi-res recording

Hit the red button, and record from the encoders and 128 pads of Hapax, external midi instruments (included MPE controllers) or any incoming analogue signal, at a high resolution of 192 ppqn. Looper style recording, count-down and metronome options, punch-in mode, you'll certainly find the options that best suit your workflow.

Time elasticity

Each track has an elasticity value which changes its playback speed, expressed in percentage of BPM. Quickly double or halve the speed of a track, or create slightly shifted tracks that will slowly drift out of phase with each other.

Fluid editing

Using hardware should never get in the way of creative flow. The undo/redo button lets you go back in time as needed, thanks to its extensive history. Additionally, the snapshot function enables you to save the state of a pattern and recall it with a single press. Together with dedicated copy, paste and delete buttons, Hapax offers a complete toolbox for the prompt editing of your tracks.

Harmony, simplified

For fast and intuitive chord building, the chord live mode brings harmonic capabilities to anyone, with or without deep theoretical knowledge. With its colourful interface, the chord mode displays a synesthetic melding of hearing, vision and touch.

Simple by design.

Trimmed to perfection

Squarp designed Hapax from the ground up, deconstructing everything you thought you knew about sequencing- aiming for a high-end product, with dual arm processors for computation power and a rugged yet minimalist housing.

As music-making should remain an enjoyable process, dedicated buttons were over key combinations and imagined a clear-cut interface as well as a simple architecture. Squarp have striven to minimize the importance of screens for live performing, but the dual grayscale display helps keeping track of things in a studio context.

Notes: Second-generation version of the 'noodler' device from Conductive Labs, the NDLR v2 aims to simplify music theory and unlock creative ideas, making it easy to create and perform arpeggios, drones, chords and other patterns. Hook up to your synths and software over MIDI, USB or analogue clock.

Supplier's notes:

Conductive Labs have turned complex music theory into a killer synthesizer jamming MIDI controller. With four parts that can play up to 8 synths, you can make fantastic electronic music, such as soundscapes, electronica, ambient, electro, or techno to name a few. Whether noodling in your music space after work or jamming with friends, The NDLR can take your music to amazing places!

Press one of the seven chord buttons, and the two arpeggiators and drone follow the chord notes while your polyphonic synth sings with pads.

There are start and stop buttons for each of the four parts, and a button to start/stop all parts. And there's a "panic" button to stop all MIDI notes.

A colour LCD screen shows you everything that's going on. A very flat menu structure keeps menu diving to a minimum.

Pick a key, a mode and control the BPM of The NDLR's MIDI clock.

With two sets of 5 pin DIN MIDI inputs and outputs, and four USB MIDI virtual ports you have lots of ways to connect your MIDI devices. There is also CV clock in and out connectors to sync with your Korg Volcas, modular or semi modular synths.

It works with MIDI hardware synths, and your DAW or tablet, if that's your thing.

Once you master the basics, dive into the 8x modulation matrix. It lets you animate most of The NDLR's parameters. You can even send LFOs to your MIDI gear.

The NDLR includes a Pattern editor to make arp and modulation patterns, a rhythm editor and now a Chord Sequencer too! Once you have your perfect piece, you can save your patches.

What's new in The NDLR (v2)?
By popular demand, a soft-power button has added. The NDLR (v2) is powder coated with a black faceplate and beautiful red base. And the internals were modified for a new, faster microcontroller. The feature set remains the same, though there are some surprises waiting to be discovered in the menus. So far, new features are being back ported to the original The NDLR via firmware updates, as long as it does not require the faster processor.

The Four Parts

The PAD part is a polyphonic chord player for getting beautiful PADs out of your favourite poly synth. Like all of the other parts, the PAD plays notes based on the selected global chord. When you press a chord button the notes stay on until you press the next chord or stop the part, so you can twist knobs on your synths or play a lead part on guitar. Change or modulate the chord octave position, note range, spread, and strum.

A really cool feature of the PAD part is the "Interleaved Poly-Chain". When enabled, this will send the chord notes to up to 4 MIDI channels in a round robin fashion. Really great for ethereal evolving patches on a multi-timbral synth, or for turning multiple mono-synths into a poly synth! Six voices from 2 Volca FMs? Sure!

There are two "Motifs" which are extremely versatile sequenced arpeggiators. Select a pattern for each one and press Play! Independently tweak on clock division, pattern length, octave position and more. You can create your own patterns with the onboard pattern editor, and add rhythm with the onboard Rhythm editor. The motifs play the notes contained in the currently selected chord, so you don't need to pick notes on a keyboard. The NDLR supports a 10 to 300 BPM clock so play as fast or slow as you like, or use an external clock source.

The Drone part can play a single continuous note like a traditional drone does... or choose from various retrigging options, such as having the note retrigger on a chord change, the down beat, every beat, up beat, etc. You can also choose to add a 3rd and/or 5th note to the root note for a polyphonic drone. Or have the drone play a thundering kick drum if you want to.

Hardware

Requirements:

USB Power Supply not included; The NDLR (v2) runs on 5V DC, 140mA. The original is 90mA.
The NDLR comes with a 6 foot USB cable. You can purchase longer or shorter cables as needed, with USB A to USB B connectors. Users of newer Macs may need to purchase a USB B to USB C cable or use an adapter.
MIDI Synthesizer(s); The NDLR is a MIDI playing device, it doesn't make any sound on its own, it sends MIDI messages to your MIDI sound modules. It can play most anything with MIDI input including vintage synths, modern synths, mono and polyphonic synths, software synthesizers, on an iPad, PC, stand-alone or VSTs in a DAW. Note that some vintage synths or synths with poor MIDI implementations may be prone to getting stuck notes. Use the Panic button on The NDLR when needed.
To connect many synths, and for the best MIDI timing we recommend using an active, 1 input to 4 or more outputs MIDI thru device or MIDI router, such as the MRCC.
The NDLR has rich velocity controls if your synths support velocity, not all do.
The NDLR can be controlled with an external MIDI controller or sequencer. See The NDLR Setup Examples in The NDLR User Manual for details.

Performance Controls

Metropolix is an interactive sequencer optimized for live performance, jamming, and improvisation i with configurable, hands-on control of all the most essential performance parameters. Sequences transform and mutate with just the twist of a knob; a flick of a switch; a nudge of a slider; or an injection of CV. With Metropolix, your music is as dynamic and evolving as your imagination.

Two Tracks, Interconnected

Two tracks (TRK 1 and TRK 2) are variants of a main pitch/gate sequencer, which is programmed via the PITCH sliders, PULSE COUNT and GATE TYPE switches. Each track interprets the main sequence in a variety of ways i creating complementary variations that enable you to generate counterpoint, polyrhythms, and all manner of sonic movement (both subtle and extreme).

Each of these tracks has its own playback ORDER, sequence LENgth, clock DIVision, SWING amount, SLIDE time, and track GATE lengths. Other track-based sequence variables are accessible from the TRACK MENU, and include Pitch Slider inversion; sequence note range; track transposition; and more. In addition, both tracks have multiple lanes of per-stage playback parameters, including: GATE override; PITCH override; RATCHet count; PROBability of playback; ACCUMulating transposition, and a dedicated CV/CC lane. Each stage also has a SKIP feature, and a pitch SLIDE option.

The Accumulator

Automate pitch movements on a per-track or per-stage basis. Use various trigger types and increments to control variation on your tracks.

Eight Modulation Lanes

Eight Separate modulation lanes are accessed via the MOD button. Each MOD lane has 8-stages of modulation values and its own playback ORDER, LENgth, and clock DIVision; and each lane is routable to one of Metropolix' two assignable outputs, MIDI CC, and dozens of internal destinations, allowing for sophisticated and powerful self-modulation.

Three AUX Inputs and Two CTRL Knobs

A trio of AUX inputs allows for external modulation of user-assignable sequencer parameters for even greater variation, while two assignable CTRL knobs give you direct access to the parameters you want to adjust most frequently during a performance. With dedicated Pitch/Gate outputs for both Track 1 and Track 2; two totally user-assignable outputs (A and B); and internal MOD routing, Metropolix features a wealth of patching opportunities.

100 User Defined Scales

Design and modulate between your own custom scales and root note.

Modulate BPM

Use the CTRL Knobs, AUX Inputs, or Mod Lanes to modulate the BPM of your track and the clock outputs of the Metropolix.

Loopy - Performance Looping

Metropolix also features a Loopy mode, allowing you to instantly play back short sub-sequences, or even "play" the stage buttons directly (like a 'keyboard').

64 Total Recall Presets & Preset Chaining

Metropolix stores up to 64 preset configurations (in 8 banks of 8 presets), and all live settings are stored on the module, ensuring that your Metropolix will always power up exactly as you left it i even if you haven't saved them to a preset. By default presets can change all the structural (menu-based) elements of your sequencer without overwriting the front panel controls, but full recall is also available.

Chain Presets to go hands free while you twiddle other knobs on your synth.

Spektro Audio NGEN Algorithmic MIDI Workstation
Cat: 1067668

A unique 16-track MIDI sequencer designed in São Paulo / Brazil that lets you combine multiple algorithmic / generative generators and MIDI FXs to sequence multiple hardware or software MIDI instruments
Notes: NGEN is a unique 16-track MIDI sequencer designed in Sao Paulo / Brazil that lets you combine multiple algorithmic / generative generators and MIDI FXs to sequence multiple hardware or software MIDI instruments.

It offers a completely new way of creating and performing music by abstracting the composition process. Instead of writing sequences from scratch, NGEN lets you quickly generate a new sequence for your drums, basslines, melodies, and chord progressions with a push of a button.

NGEN includes classic Spektro Audio generators (ACDGEN and Polyform), completely new algorithmic generators (Drumgen, Samba, Arper, MARP, Pop, Turing, Shuffler), and practical generators (Input Sequencer, MIDI Player, Thru).

Each generator features an unique algorithm that combines different composition techniques with randomness so each generated sequence is unique.

After generating a sequence, you can tweak it in real time using the parameters available for each of the generators. Take things even further by applying MIDI FXs such as Chord or Glitch to your sequences.

All tracks in NGEN follow the same key and scale so it's easier to get multiple sequences that work well with each other.

Quickly save and restore your creations using patterns and projects stored in the microSD card.

NGEN's design is primarily focused on live performance so it features a 1.3" OLED screen, a minimalistic and easy to read interface, mechanical switches (Gateron Green), shortcuts for accessing different features, per track Program Change selector and auto-variation, extensive MIDI CC implementation, and a Performance mode for controlling up to 4 parameters at the same time.

NGEN also includes a variety of tools to let you explore this world of algorithmic sequencing such as assignable CV outputs, a built-in MIDI monitor, different clock generators, and much more.

Generators

ARPER- Algorithmic arpeggiator with real time controls
ACDGEN- Design to generate basslines and melodies using 8 different algorithms.
DRUMGEN- Generate drum patterns based on 3D probability templates based on different genres.
INPUT SEQ- Record incoming MIDI notes into a step sequencer then adjust transposition, density, and direction in real time.
MARP- Unique and experimental polyrhythmic arpeggiator.
MIDI PLAYER- Playback .mid files stored in the microSD card (1 track, up to 128 events).
POP- Generate chord progressions and control how they're played.
SAMBA- Percussive generator based on a 4-part euclidean sequencer.
SHUFFLER- Sequence and rearrange sliced loops (in a software or hardware sampler).
THRU- Modify sequences coming from other tracks or an external MIDI generator.
TURING- Generative generator based on a lockable 16-bit shift register (inspired by Music Thing's Turing Machine).
