  4. Snake Eyes (Ishmael Ensemble remix) (8:11)
Review: If you've not yet got your ears around Roger 'Chip' Wickham's sensationally sunny, jazz-fired "Shamal Wind" mini-album, we suggest you check it out post-haste. In the meantime, Lovemonk has reminded us of its magnificence via a new set of reworks from some seriously hot producers. Max Graef handles side A, first serving up a chugging, mind altering and heavily percussive "Bongo Mix" of "Soho Strut", before reaching for the sub-bass and fizzing, juke-tempo jazz rhythms on the bonkers but brilliant "Bass Mix" of the very same song. Over on the flipside, Peckham beat-maker Reginald Omas Mamode IV serves up a dusty, Rhodes-laden take on "(Soul) Rebel 23" featuring his own soulful vocals, before Gilles Peterson favourites Ishmael Ensemble mix live jazz instrumentation with rolling house beats on a sublime revision of "Snake Eyes".

  4. Oceans Of My Mind (Simina Grigoriu & Moe Danger) (7:19)
Review: House Music With Love makes a welcome return to the fray with a fresh new 12" from Kaldera and Lazarusman, who team up to present the swirling, thought-provoking "Oceans Of My Mind." Between Kaldera's brooding production and Lazarusman's off-centre poetry, it's the kind of track that will suit a lot of different environments and always stand out. As well as the original, there's a strong run of remixes on offer here, from Urmet K's softer, smoother deep house approach to Suraj's infectiously funky version, wrapping up with the more epic peak time thrust of Simina Grigoriu & Moe Danger's take on the distinctive source material.

  2. Neutron Dance (Fango remix) (7:08)
  3. Neutron Dance (Mano Le Tough vocal mix) (6:55)
  4. Neutron Dance (Gerd Janson Birkenstock remix) (6:48)
Review: If you've danced at house-focused clubs and festivals this year, there's a strong chance that you've strut your stuff plenty of times to Krystal Klear's "Neutron Dance". The hooky, riff-heavy original version isn't included on this remix package, but happily the assembled reworks are all killers in their own right. We're particularly enjoying the squeezable synth bass, punchy machine drums and fluid piano solos that catch the ear on Paul Woolford's ace "Jolly Roger Version", not to mention the sweaty breakbeats, restless drum machine cowbells and thrusting New York freestyle bass underpinning Fango's fantastic take. Elsewhere, Gerd Janson straps on his "Birkies" and re-imagines the cut as a retro-futurist house treat while Mano Le Tough doffs a cap towards Italo-disco and throbbing big room house.

  6. Love Rising From The Dark Abyss Of Sorrow (4:49)
Review: Since launching the Modified Man project in 2016, Adam Scrimshire and Dave Koor have yet to put a foot wrong. The genius of their collaborative releases is their ability to combine loose-limbed instrumental improvisations with dusty samples, cleverly manipulated beats and an acute sense of atmosphere. This third volume in the series rolls along in a similar way, flitting between skewed, straight-to-tape boogie-house ("Blame's On You Bruv"), solo-laden deep house dreaminess ("Glass Army"), intergalactic jazz-funk/broken beat fusion ("Here Me Calling"), smooth and loved-up grooves (the amusingly titled "Sergio Arpeggio") and becalmed, ultra-deep downtempo beats ("Love Rising From The Dark Abyss of Sorrow").

Review: Made in the winter and spring of 2018 in 'edenic' Altadena, California: P & D Records co-founder (and Suzanne Kraft collaborator) P Relief is back with the label's third release. The now Berlin based producer serves up dreamy and mesmerizing lo-fi house on the splendid Idlehour EP, as heard on terrific jams such as the wonderful opener "Club Fever" while the zeitgeist of early '90s IDM is captured stylishly on the mysterious "Broken Bell" as well as on the dreamy, ambient house "Lolli".

  1. Do What You Gotta Do (feat Mandel Turner) (7:28)
  2. The Deep (6:49)
Review: Veteran of the Parisian scene Franck Roger is back at it on his Home Invasion imprint, delivering some bold and stylistic house music. On the A side of the label's 20th release we've got the tough and rolling Windy City influence of "Do What You Gotta Do" (feat Mandel Turner) with its infectious vocal hooks and hands in the air stabs - that the label best described themselves as reminscinent of old Prescription Records or Derrick Carter. On the flip, Roger goes deep with the sexy, emotive and fittingly titled "The Deep" bringing you back to the good old days of the French deep house scene which was run back in the day by DJ Deep, Julien Jabre and Playin' 4 the City.

  12. Screensaver - "Eliminated" (3:55)
Review: Efficient Space's latest essential release sees Andras and Instant Peterson take a trawl through the darker, lesser-visited corners of Australian electronic music. According to the label, the pair lifted material from "local 12" singles, CD-Rs and the archives of community radio station 3RRR FM". Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from the acid-flecked, "Nude Photo" style Detroit fun of FSOM's "Resist The Beat" and chiming, trumpet-laden bliss of Ian Eccles-Smith's "The Slaughtering Eye", to the jaunty, mid-90s New York style bounce of Blimp's "Yellowgold" and the ultra-deep ambient techno pulse of Tetrphnm's "Track 11". Check, too, the enveloping dreaminess of Screensaver's drifting ambient closer, and the jazzy dancefloor depth of Inner Harmomy's "Da Lub Club".

Review: Given that it's been eleven years since Wajeed last released an album - the hip-hop focused "The War LP" - you'd expect the Detroiter's latest full-length to be a totally different beast. It is, of course, with "From The Dirt" containing more material influenced by his recent dalliances with Motor City deep house. Over the course of ten tasty tracks, the former Platinum Pied Pipers producer happily flits between acid-fired piano house ("From The Dirt"), Omar-S style goodness ("After You Left"), disco and funk-influenced vocal workouts (see "Things About You"), tasty tech-soul songs ("I Ain't Safe", the wonderful "Make It Happen") and jazz-flecked deep house dustiness (the percussive and swinging, "My Father's Rhythm").

005 (1-sided 12")
Cat: FLORENCE 005. Rel: 13 Nov 18
  1. Bonobo (7:40)
  2. Bobby (3:34)
Review: Since debuting in 2013, the occasional "Florence" series of sneaky house remixes and re-makes has delivered some high quality revisions. This is the hush-hush series' second release of the year and, like its predecessor, boasts two club-friendly tweaks. The first sees our mysterious hero work his or her magic on a dewy-eyed, harp-laden sliver of soft-focus downtempo soul, underpinning elements of the familiar original track with jazzy percussive flourishes and a smooth, tech-tinged deep house beat. "Bobby", meanwhile, is a lolloping mid-tempo affair, brilliantly combining sections from a yearning version of "California Dreaming" with rolling hip-hop style breakbeats. Both cuts are sympathetic to their source material whilst adding the right amount of dancefloor weightiness.

Review: Axe On Wax sublabel PNP cuts to the chase once again with another limited five tracker from an exciting range of names. Rising London talent Tom Jay takes the lead with a brazen slab of funky house that chugs with a generous helping of Chicago flair. He's in good company; the bossman Fede Lng with a silky street soul piece that hits with a smidgeon of new jack sass, Hank Youngman simplifies his name and groove with beautiful filtered samba savoire faire before Pacific Bureau rounds it off, pressing the big red button named 80s soul. Recommended!

  1. Rush (6:40)
  2. Get Up (6:42)
  3. Night River (5:29)
  4. Things I Said (7:23)
Review: Having dropped some choice digi-only releases on Robsoul and Cross Section, rising British producer Jade Cox makes her first appearance on wax via Nail's 89:Ghost label, and she's making quite the statement of intent with these no-nonsense club workouts. There's a loopy, tracky feel to "Rush" that perfectly captures the energy of a killer peak time set, while "Get Up" takes a looser, funkier approach that should sit comfortably in all manner of warm up scenarios. "Night River" is a chugging, upbeat and soulful jam indebted to the unmistakable warmth of Detroit house, and "Things I Said" brings things full circle with a stripped back, percussive groover for DJs to get fresh with.

  2. Red Axes - "Treacksheni" (6:23)
  3. Hodge - "Signal" (5:38)
Review: Needs is back with its fifth installment of charity-raising goodness from some seriously quality producers. This time the gauntlet is thrown down by the increasingly prolific DJ Normal 4, who wields some of his signature breakbeats over a cheeky synth that nods to Da Hool for a dark and deadly roller. Israeli duo Red Axes pop up fresh from outings on !K7 and Phantasy Sound for the worldly percussion and mystical atmosphere of "Treacksheni" before Bristol bass-wielding techno titan Hodge finishes the package off with the stunning, dramatic undulations of "Signal," making this a collection of tracks that all feed into the same vein of rhythmically adventurous, moody club music.

  4. Wherever You Go (Lauer akai mix) (6:29)
Review: Fred Everything's Lazy Days label rounds out a strong 2018 with this remix package focused on some of Everything's recent productions. On the A side, his collaboration with singer Sio gets the remix treatment from Andre Lodemann and Fabian Dikof before Everything himself comes back to revisit the track with an alternative spin. While each having their own distinct stamps on how to work "By Day," both versions chime with the kind of uplifting, melodic tech house that Lazy Days is known for. On the B side, "Sliverlight" gets a once over from Ian Pooley, who employs a subby bass and tense, sustained string notes to create a captivating atmosphere, then Lauer rounds the record out with a bright and breezy 90s-rave-flavoured "Akai Mix" of "Wherever You Go."

  1. Cyber (House Pass) (7:26)
  2. Cyber (Cosmic Slide) (7:13)
  3. Cyberc (Ambient Sax mix) (7:28)
Review: Gilles Smith and James Priestley seem to be devoting far more of their time to music production. This excellent outing on Mule Musiq is their second single of 2018 following a solid debut on Phonica Records earlier in the year. In its' A-side "House Pass" form, "Cyber" is a deliciously saucer-eyed and loved-up affair where dizzyingly positive synthesizer motifs wrap themselves around a chunky bassline and bouncy, No Smoke style drums. Over on side B, Smith and Priestley offer up two alternative interpretations: the trippy, techno-tinged early morning psychedelic hypnotism of the "Cosmic Slide" version, and the beat-less bliss of the "Ambient Sax Version", which further explores the track's Italian dream house influences.
