  1. Mind Control (5:09)
  2. Emergence (4:52)
  3. Stronghold (4:16)
  4. Armada Bleeps (4:41)
Review: Deep Medi Musik continues on its mission to find the darkest, deepest and heaviest dubstep out there with a new bowel-rumbling release from Compa. It opens with the lurching drums and insistent stabs of 'Mind Control', a spacious wobbler with impossibly weighty bass. 'Emergence' then gets a little busier with zippy leads pinging about the mix and frosty static adding texture to the low end wub. 'Stronghold' is another bleak futuristic vision where all humanlike has been replaced by AI and 'Armada Bleeps' brings glassy texture, edgy chords and glitching breaks.

  3. Pusher Acid (6:45)

  5. Avert Your Eyes Bass (5:22)
  6. Spineless (5:42)
Review: From the eastern sorcerer who gave us 'Dying On Acid' a few years ago on Deep Medi comes 'Pusher Acid', one of the most beguiling EPs Gantz has cast our way in some time. Six tracks over two 12"s, there's a real measured pace and sense of tension running across the collection as we gradually build up to the pensive, fierce and well-chiselled title track. Elsewhere we have the eerie cinematica of 'Sleepless Elite', the left-footed lollops and slug-like bassline of 'Chiral' and the palpitating, slo-mo seduction of the vinyl-only cut 'Spineless'. Keep pushing on.

Newmont
Newmont (12")
Cat: NWMT 001. Rel: 18 Nov 21
  1. Hal Grover - "Carlotta's Dream" (Orbit mix) (8:01)
  2. B+A+D - "Moon, Sea & Waves" (8:10)
Review: Thew newly minted Newmont label makes a bold statement of intent here with a pair of no nonsense tracks. Hal Grover's 'Carlotta's Dream' comes as an Orbit mix - which may or may not be a reference to the seminal Morley techno night of the same name - and it voyages to outer space on tightly woven breaks, with smeared pads and a melancholic bassline ON the flip side, things slow right down in the hands of B+A+D -for their 'Moon, Sea & Waves.' It's spacious, heavyweight and eerie with coarse hits and far sighted pads.

Mental Ballast
Cat: DNO 007. Rel: 27 Oct 21
  1. Ignorants (5:35)
  2. Mental Ballast (5:37)
  3. Analysis (feat Yoofee) (4:12)
  4. Tigers (4:26)
Review: Russian producer Kercha has already served up two superb EPs that cemented his reputation as a contemporary deep dubstep great, and now he backs it up with a standout first EP of 2021. His Mental Ballast EP comes on the label he is a firm part of, DNO Records, and is complete with his signature off-kilter rhythms. Opener 'Ignornants' has shimmering oscillations and deep, dark dub. Plenty of subtle samples flesh out the eerie groove including a clip of Russian maestro E. Ponasenkov. 'Analysis' is another gem, this time with Berlin artist Yoofee with plenty of purple flourishes. There is serious wobble to 'Tigers' that keeps you on edge and 'Acid' is a real spin out to close.

Bloodgulch
Bloodgulch (clear splattered vinyl 12")
Cat: PONDLIFE 012. Rel: 24 Nov 21
  1. Bloodgulch (3:21)
  2. Umbreons Paw (3:43)
Review: The Pond Life crew are back to draw you deep into their swamp world of stomach churning bass and mind warping oscillations. It is Bristol talent Modelle at the controls this time and makes his first release of the year. Opener 'Bloodgulch' is pure filth with its mad low end full of heavy kicks and lurching bass. Saw tooth synths bubble up to the surface before being sucked down below once again and yelping vocals add another texture. 'Umbreons Paw' is a more precise and brightly lit bit of minimalist bass and techno that has glistening perc and a late night urban feel.

  1. Wings (4:41)
  2. Wahhh (4:42)
  3. Fermata (4:40)
  4. Czeck Mystik (4:44)
Review: After a debut EP in 2018 under this alias, Berlin's Yoofee went quiet until earlier this year. Then he served up three new EPs in quick succession, with this being the most recent on White Peach. It's a perfectly sweet and ripe four tracker that takes dubstep into deep and atmospheric new territory. 'Wings' kicks off with plunging bass and scattered toms with a lush flute line leading the charge. 'Wahhh' is then icy cold and sparse, with vocal yelps and a low end oscillation charging up the crowd. 'Fermata' is a shuffler, with a soft edged lead synth and glorious muted melodies and shimmering snares sounding like rain dancing on a roof. 'Czeck Mystik' closes down with a deadly sense of dread and paranoia.

Spice
Spice (12")
Cat: NAAN 005. Rel: 24 Nov 21
  1. Spice (3:54)
  2. Grief (3:56)
  3. Harm (3:14)
  4. Two Rumours (3:01)
Review: Zha brings together element of dubstep, grime and trap on his latest 12" for the Naan crew. It is his first outing of the year following solid slabs of wax for the likes of White Peach and this label dating back to 2015. This one kicks off with 'Spice,' which has bass tones pinging about the mix with big hits, snatched vocal yelps and dusty drums all keeping you on your toes. 'Grief' is darker and dirtier thanks to the filthy great oscillation that rips up the swaggering rhythm and 'Harm' gets deep on some pensive pads and intoxicating melodic sounds. 'Two Rumours' closes down with sub so warm and cuddly it's like being hugged by a new duvet.

  16. Little Bo Peep (feat Dave, Hamzaa & Wretch 32) (6:28)
Review: Ghett's Conflict Of Interest album late last year was one of grime's finest. It now makes its arrival on wax and still hits hard. There are plenty of hugely evocative and biographical stories in this record that make it all the more real and impactful, from tales of street life to memories of his childhood to worries about being a parent. Those many different sides to Ghett's personality are reflected by the artwork which shows him at different ages all at once. The dark production makes for long and shadowy moods but guest spots from the likes of Emile Sande and Ed Sheehan bring a lighter soul sound that will have you singing along.
