I Called You Back Baby (coloured vinyl 7")
Cat: CLMN 183C1. Rel: 29 May 20
  1. I Called You Back Baby (3:03)
  2. Impressions Of You (3:54)
Review: Last year Kelly Finnigan - son of storied Hammond organist Mike Finnigan - released his debut album, "The Tales People Tell", a gloriously authentic and wholehearted tribute to 1960s soul and funk. It's from that set that these two tracks are taken. A-side "I Called You Baby" is an unflinchingly heavy deep funk workout rich in bustling breakbeats, memorable guitar riffs, sustained organ chords and fiery horn riffs, all topped off with a brilliant lead vocal from Finnigan. On flipside "Impressions of You", Finnigan switches mood, adding another heartfelt, passionate vocal to a slow, loved-up backing track that's every bit as impressive as the club-ready A-side.

Review: It would be fair to say that Nick Hakim's new album - his third, following 2017's breakthrough set "Green Twins" - is not a barrel of laughs. It is, though, something of a stunner. So while the lyrics are thoughtful, weighty and heartfelt, mixing social and political commentary with the kind of care-worn personal introspection he does so well - the music is stirring and emotion-rich, offering a take on soul that fuses grandiose, wall-of-sound production (read: lots of reverb) with densely layered backing vocals, snare-heavy beats, and slightly psychedelic instrumentation that recalls both the glory days of conscious soul and the kind of lo-fi soul that revels in its stripped-back looseness. Highlights are plentiful throughout, with the epic "Qadir" and super-sweet "Crumpy" initially catching the ear.

  1. Oh Linda (2:45)
  2. Track 2 (2:42)
Review: In 1977, Atlanta fusionists Starfoxx had a big hit in the US Billboard chart with "Disco Rock", a cut that -as the title suggests - added a rock and rhythm & blues edge to the then dominant disco sound. It was something of a novelty, but much of their earlier work is pretty darn hot. "Oh Linda", which first appeared in stores in 1973, could well be the hottest of the lot. Sitting somewhere between the rasping blues-rock of Cream and more extravagant American funk and soul, the track is full to bursting with crunchy Clavinet riffs, throaty vocals and mazy electric piano solos. This reissue from TRAMP contains just the one track (pressed to both sides for some reason), but don't let that put you off: it really is a must-have.

  10. The Davis Family - "Genesis"
Review: Athens of the North originally contracted obscure 80s boogie artist Billy Bruner about reissuing two of his rare, sought-after singles - "The Tulsa Song" and "The Dream" - but instead raided his tape archives and putting together what's effectively his debut album. Combining previously released tracks (including some made as part of similarly obscure outfit T'Spoon and the gospel-leaning band The Davis Family), unheard extended versions and previously unreleased songs, the album is warm, soulful, slick and summery. Highlights include the stuttering P-funk flex of "Cats Meow", the sizzling dancefloor heat of "School Dance" and the deliciously extended version of glassy-eyed '80s soul jam "Never". If sparkling, synth-heavy '80s soul is your thing, this is one surprise retrospective you won't want to miss.

Miracles (reissue) (LP + MP3 download code)

  1. I Will Stand On It (3:03)
  2. Being With You (3:38)
  3. Now I'm On My Way To Heaven (3:35)
  4. I Got A Song In My Heart (3:36)

  6. I Wanna Sing For You (2:39)
  7. Living For Him (4:58)
  8. Mon Rose La Sharon (3:18)
Review: Recorded sometime in the late 1970s, and previously only available as a private press release on a tiny Maryland label, "Miracles" is the sole album from gospel preacher/singer Reverend Norman Weeks and his backing band, the Revelations. Little info is available, though if the modern soul end of gospel is your thing it's well worth picking up. As you'd expect, the vocals from Weeks and his collaborators are soulful and righteous, while the accompanying music is impeccably played and surprisingly well produced given the likely budget constraints. Highlights include the heavy funk-soul strut of "It Took A Miracle", the Bob James-influenced brilliance of "I Wanna Sing For You" and fizzing LP opener and bona fide dancefloor rocker "I Will Stand On It".

  1. Marvin's Mood (part 1) (4:21)
  2. Marvin's Mood (part 2) (2:57)
Review: You don't have to look far to find a Marvin Gaye edit or sample but few are as tasteful as this new 7" from Roots member Stro Elliot who is a master of chopping up and sampling sounds. He proves that again here as "Marvin's Mood (Part 1)" feels like a wholly new beat, with lush instrumental, lo-fi drums and carefully deployed vocal coos from the master of soul himself. "Marvin's Mood "Part 2)" makes use of similar samples but layers them over a more rolling and crisp boom-bap beat. Both are full of heart and will have early evening floors keen to get moving.
