  1. Just (6:13)
  2. Celeste (6:01)
  3. Back 2 U (Tranz dub) (7:45)
Review: Belfast pair Bicep are smart operators. Having previously doffed a cap to both Italian house and classic New Jersey garage, recent releases have seen them play around with a variety of rhythmic patterns and more advanced musical elements. They're at it again here on their latest outing for Aus. Opener "Just" is pleasingly cheery, with simple but addictive electronic melodies and sweeping chords nestling above a head-nodding, hip-hop influenced groove. "Celeste" is undeniably Balearic, with sun-kissed pianos, dreamy pads and drifting vocal samples stretching out over delay-laden, African-influenced percussion. Finally, they return to their rush-inducing best on "Back 2 U (Tranz Dub)", a loving fusion of vintage progressive house builds, winding melodies and mid '90s beats.

  2. Sophie Lloyd - "Promises" (7:37)
  3. Alena - "Learn To Get By" (Ron Basejam remix) (8:36)
  4. Peter Simmons - "Downtown" (5:58)
Review: Midnight Riot keep on with their Balearic Headspace series, this time hitting Volume 5 Sampler 1 with four more killer cuts. They all take you right to a breezy beach party on the White Isle, with cocktails in hadn't, glistening seas drift in and out and gorgeous people swaying in a hot sun. Dim Zach kicks off with some perfectly horizontal disco grooves and Sophie Lloyd then gets all sentimental and emotional on 'Promises' before things get more party with the acid flecked slow motion deep house groove of 'Learn To Get By' as edited by Ron Basejam and last of all Peter Simmons blisses us out with the romantic 'Downtown.'

  3. Misterioso (4:54)
Review: Andy Pye's Leeds based label Balearic Social has always been about grown up and escapist sounds with real musical value and gorgeous grooves. After something of a hiatus the label returns with a typically classy offering from Reuben Vaun Smith which actually moves way from super downtempo sounds and towards more dream-scale musical fantasies. Opener 'Energia Mistica' is a dubbed out trip with arching pads and retro synth sounds, 'Tomate Tu Tempo' rides a wave of seaside bliss and pan pipe magic and closer 'Misterioso' is a more colourful and psychedelic cut.

Review: A cult Brazilian band at their peak in the 1980s, Finis Africae represent the pinnacle of what post punk and its experimental offshoots reached for in South America. A lot of this compilation focuses on sprawling tracks that feature distant shapeless vocals, lightly pattering percussion and languid guitar, but cuts such as "Radio Tarifa" shimmy with the upstart angles of disco-not-disco at its finest, shot through with a salsa flair. Twisting and turning from child-sung folk to industrial-tinged instrumentals, through slow-pumping indie jangle and so much more besides, you'll find yourself pleasantly surprised at many turns discovering one of the hidden gems of the other side of the world.

This expanded edition features remixes from the album which were released shortly after in the same year, available once again on vinyl. From Joy Orbison's emotive and off-kilter rework of 'Love Cry', there's life affirming vibes abound on Floating Points' perspective of 'Sing' and Jon Hopkins' glassy-eyed and bittersweet rendition of 'Angel Echoes' appears alongside the timeless originals. For example, the dreamy sonic tapestry of 'This Unfolds' as well as 'Plastic People' - the poignant tribute to the legendary London club.

Review: Earlier in the year distinguished deep house and deep techno producer Kaoru Inoue dusted off his Chari Chari alias for the first time in four years and delivered We Hear The Last Decades Dreaming, a gorgeous (and essential) fusion of new age ambient, American minimalism, jazz and dusty downtempo grooves. On the back of that acclaimed release, HMV in Japan has decided to offer-up a first ever vinyl pressing of the Japanese great's 2002 album under the alias, In Time. A little bolder and more colourful in tone, the set sees Inoue and a variety of guest musicians brilliantly blur the boundaries between ambient, modern classical, gentle Latin beats, dub-flecked grooves, numerous exotic Asian musical styles, hazy Latin techno and the deepest house around.

  6. All Will Be Changed (1:17)
Review: International Noise Orchestra continue to get a thorough reappraisal from Emotional Rescue, the perfect vessel for such wayward 80s sounds. The global outlook of the German project continues apace with the wonderfully angular, Arabian-tinged take on 'Come Together'. From Fairlight CMI sampledelia to wiggy synth, guitars and drums jamming out on 'Vit Quai Don', this is a record that veers in sonic style with gleeful abandon. 'Marching In Time' slaps and slides like Prince jamming with Jah Wobble, and 'Bum Bum Krach (Hommage A Adele Sandrock)' is a particularly leftfield drum solo punctuated by curious growls. You won't hear another record that sounds quite like this one, that's for sure.

Review: The third volume of International Noise Orchestra archival dives from Emotional Rescue sees no let up in the dizzying, dazzling displays of visionary 80s production from this curious German-Algerian project. The fusion between bold and brash synths and samples with Jol Allouche's drumming is fluid throughout. On lead track 'The Atlantic Swimmer' the project sounds incredibly of its time but also utterly out of time and space in its futuristic outernational reverie. There's space for era-appropriate bombast on 'Listen/Gimme More Lovin', which shimmers with a new wave tint, while a rubbery b-line on 'I Speak Your Body Electric' almost hints towards acid in its fluid glides. Stellar, spellbinding stuff highly deserving of a second airing.

  1. Yusef Lateef - "Love Theme From Spartacus" (2:57)
  2. Cannonball Adderley Sextet - "Brother John" (2:24)
Review: This must-check dinked 45 brings together two killer and influential jazz recordings from the early 1960s. On the A-side you'll find Yusuf Lateef's inspired cover of Alen North's 'Spartacus Love Theme', a shuffling, Latin-tinged, piano-laden affair that inspired many subsequent interpretations from fellow musical titans (think Ramsey Lewis, Carlos Santana, Eddie Harris and Bill Evans, for starters). It's an effortlessly breezy and life-affirming version that stands apart from the hard-bop jazz jams that Lateef was recording at the time. On the flip you'll find the scarce 7" edit of the Cannonball Alderley Sextet's recording of 'Brother John', a cool jazz interpretation that famously features a rare oboe solo from the track's composer (and Sextet member), Yusuf Lateef.

Review: Like Weather is electronic songwriter Leila's much hearted album from 1998. It's a real classic that has never before been reissued, until now. The remastered release first came on Aphex Twin's cult Rephlex label at a time when the artist was playing keys in Bjork's band. It's a beguiling mix of squealing electronics and lo-fi pop, lullaby-like melodies and outlier R&B, all with blurred edges, frayed textures and a warm analogue hum and hiss throughout. While some tracks are leftfield and unsettling, others are beautiful tender and affecting. This reissue will likely win the artist a wealth of new fans.

Review: Former Moloko singer Roisin Murphy proves with this new album she is still a force to be reckoned with. It bristles with dance floor kinetics and fizzing electronic synths that come laden with her outsider pop vocals. Roisin Machine is a collaboration with Sheffield producer Richard Barratt and the results include tracks that touch on feelings of frustration and romance, modern Britain and plenty more besides, all with plenty of his rugged production, bit also plenty of super sweet rolling grooves and funky bass riffs. The hip-swinging 'Murphy's Law' is a particular highlight from, this perennially underrated artist.

Review: My Friend Dario is a newly emerging talent in the Balearic beat making scene. He has impressed with his vital sounds covering a broad array of styles on labels like Hell Yeah and now makes his biggest statement to date with six superb tracks on Nunorthern Soul. It is a blissful affair from the off with the fluttering synths and delicate rhythms of 'Fenice' followed by more floor facing beats on 'Malvasia' and 'Mr Mellow.' The long legged drums then return with sunset vibes a plenty on 'Neve Su Acireale'. 'Campagna 2' shows off a nice deep house sound while 'Storm' is the thoughtful downtempo closer.

  2. Summer Madness (4:01)
Review: Sometimes known as Inokasira Rangers, Park Rangers are a Japanese band who have spent much of the last decade releasing inspired but unlikely instrumental reggae covers of massive rock, pop and disco hits. This 7" single boasts two of their most popular covers, starting with a ridiculously cheery and almost hilariously cheeky version of Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'. Built around a 1960s style rocksteady riddim, it's instantly recognisable thanks to the band's choice to track the tune of Cobain's lead vocal (which naturally isn't present) with a Hammond organ solo. On the flip you'll find a deep reggae-disco cover of Kool & The Gang classic 'Summer Madness'; it's good, but nowhere near as fine as the surprising A-side.

He keeps summer vibes alive with another masterfully mature party EP featuring fine remixes of the best moments from QUIROGA's last album, Passages. Jazz N Palms, a resident at Ibiza's Pikes and regular at London's Ronnie Scotts, offers a standout track with lively flutes, bossa-rhythms and tumbling live drums on his take of 'Africa Addio.' My Friend Dario is also in fine form as the fledgling producer contuse to save up sumptuous sounds on his aversion of 'Chiaia Sunse'.

The Japanese artist recorded it initially in 1985, and fused alt rock, new wave and art rock styles into a pure and glistening record with mandolins, violins and synths all freely colliding underneath intriguing vocals. At times haunting and mysterious, at others heavenly and otherworld, it is the sort of oddity that real music lovers fawn over. Filled with imagination and a million subtle references to myriad musical scenes and styles it makes for a truly absorbing journey through the old and the new.

Review: Following up some great ones by Nutia, Lopal and JAJA, Berlin-based live musician Temple Haze joins the Tal der Verwirrung label. Fresh off his collaboration with Stil Vor Talent chief Oliver Koletzki, he presents a four-track debut vinyl full of mellow guitar, ethereal vocals and an intriguing, nebulous ambience. From the low slung island dream of 'Sylveren Soul' infusing neo-classical and deep house elements, to the vocal-led/pop-inflected downtempo ballad 'Wondering Why', there's also the moody and knackered shuffle of 'Movement'. Closing out the EP is the sun-kissed road trip balearica of 'El Mirador'

Review: Paul 'Mudd' Murphy and Simon Purnell's Leng Records turned ten earlier in the year, so they've decided to mark the occasion by drawing together tracks from the last decade - most previously released, but some unheard - that deftly showcase the label's ear-pleasing mix of psychedelic, Balearic, cosmic and dub disco influences. Highlights come thick and fast, from the dubbed-out insanity of the Idjut Boys vintage remix of 'Golden Chalk' by Mountaineer and Mudd's chugging, acid-fired 'Slow Rave Mix' of Tiago's 'The Source', to the hypnotic pscyh-disco exotica of Ali Kuru's 'Luna' and the hazy Bay Area disco-chug of 40 Thieves 'Backwards Love'. Vinyl copies of the album come shipped with a bonus 10-inch containing cuts from recent label signings Lex (not to be confused with Lexx) and Harvey Couture.

Review: Nunorthern Soul continues on their mission to get you horizontal no matter the weather with a new one from Yggdrasil, a Farro Islands based project by Kristan Blak. It's a neo-classical album that was discovered by label boss 'Phat' Phil Cooper who was playing G! festival on the Islands back in 2019 and was invited to check out some of the local acts. One of them was Kristan and Phil immediately fell in love with what he heard. Nw the album is finally unveiled, with plenty of subtle references to the early sounds of the iconic Cafe Del Mar, as well as neo-classical piano pieces steeped in tenderness and New Age grooves in which to get lost.
