  1. Stranger Searching (12:43)
  2. Redeye Reprisal (4:46)
  3. The Silk Road Prelude (11:51)
  4. A Love Supreme (7:42)
Review: Founded in 2017, Ronin Arkestra is a fusionist jazz/electronica collective from Tokyo founded by broken beat keys-man Mark de Clive-Lowe. Given that the band includes some of the finest players in Japan's contemporary jazz scene - most notably members of Kyoto Jazz Massive, WONK and Sleepwalker - you'd expect this first outing on Albert's Favourites to be rather good. It is, of course, with the band sashaying between dubbed-out soundscape jazz ("Stranger Searching"), sun-bright jazz-funk influenced positivity ("Redeye Reprisal"), loose-limbed, semi-improvised intensity ("The Silk Road Prelude") and, most notably, an awe-inspiring 21st century re-imagining of John Coltrane classic "A Love Supreme".

  1. You've Gotta Have Freedom (4:34)
  2. You've Gotta Have Freedom (instrumental) (4:35)
Review: Astonishingly, Boogaloo's re-make of Pharoah Sanders classic "You've Gotta Have Freedom" is now 24 years old. It was originally included on the B-side of the jazz-loving Swedish hip-hop outfit's 1995 EP "Humongous Steps (Back Down To London)", but arguably became more widely known when it was reissued by G.A.M.M. on 12" in 2003. Here it appears on 7" for the first time, with the band's vocal version - a positive, life-affirming delight that brilliantly flits between sections faithful to Sanders' version and rapped section underpinned by live hip-hop breaks - being accompanied by an equally impressive instrumental take. If it's not already in your collection, this edition should be an essential purchase.

Review: Jazz Re:freshed has a knack of snapping up rising stars of British jazz at just the right time. They're at it again, here, offering up the debut solo album from Sarah Tandy, a pianist best known for her work with Camilla George and SEED Ensemble. "Infection In The Sentence" is a hugely vibrant and colourful affair, with Tandy and her musical collaborators jauntily dancing through a sextet of bustling original compositions. There's a rich, warm and sunny feel to the meandering trumpet solos and twinkling pianos of "Nursery Rhyme", while "Bradbury Street" and "Under The Skin" are high-octane workouts full of sweaty thrills and spills. Arguably best of all, though, is "Timelord", a silky jazz-funk number that sits somewhere between Bob James and Tenderlonious' Ruby Rushton band.

  1. Tried (feat Little Dragon) (3:33)
  2. Tried (instrumental) (3:32)
Review: Despite not releasing all that much in 2018, Canadian nu-jazz combo BADBADNOTGOOD's reputation continued to rise. That was in no small part due to their eye-catching collaboration with Little Dragon, which resulted in the digital release of "Tried" back in September. Now the track has been given a deserved seven-inch single release by Ninja Tune. With LD lead vocalist Yukimi Nagano doing her best to channel the spirit of Minnie Riperton, "Tried" has a similarly languid, jazz/folk/soul fusion feel as some of the best works by Rotary Connection. BADBADNOTGOOD's admiration of the Charles Stepney-produced band comes through loud and clear through the choice of instruments and arrangements. For further proof, check the accompanying flipside instrumental mix.

Review: On his previous album, 2017's "Inspirations", veteran jazz vocalist Dwight Trible joined forces with Manchester bandleader Matthew Halsall to cover some of his favourite songs. Two years on, the Los Angeles-based artist returns with a set of mostly new compositions recorded with a backing band including broken beat veteran Mark de Clive-Lowe on keys (thrillingly, fellow LA resident Kamasi Washington also features on title track "Mothership"). It's an impressive album, all told, with Trible's soulful, impassioned vocals and conscious, hard-hitting lyrics providing a constant source of inspiration on tracks that are variously impressively spiritual, intensely psychedelic, delightfully uplifting and seductively soulful.

Cat: 22A 026. Rel: 05 Mar 19
  1. Eleven Grapes (4:40)
  2. One Mo' Dram (5:00)
Review: The Tenderlonious-helmed UK neo-jazz super-group Ruby Rushton has a new album in the works. While we'll have to wait until April to hear that set, titled "Ironside", 22a has been good enough to sling out this taster single featuring two tracks that have made the cut. A-side "Eleven Grapes" is particularly potent, with a jaunty, ear-catching flute and electric piano solo ushering in a breezy, morning-fresh trip into Latin-tinged jazz-funk fusion. Over on side B, "One Mo' Dram" is a hushed and evocative affair, with starry, Herbie Hancock style solos and atmospheric cymbals introducing an organic, all-live hybrid broken beat/jazz workout.

  2. Dreamflower (4:10)
Review: Two beautiful compositions from the eponymous debut album'70s New York fusionists Tarika Blue's, never previously released on 45. Props to Athens From The North must be given once again!! "Truth Is The Key" is an ageless swinging jazz piece that still sounds futureproofed to this day... Largely thanks to the pristine musicianship, Irene Datcher's vocals and the liquid soul arp solo. Few tracks live up their name as much as "Dreamflower". Spacey, somnambulant and laced in swooning dynamics, it's not hard to understand why the likes of Erykah Badu sampled this one.

Review: Brownswood Recordings has high hopes for this debut album from the previously unheralded Yussef Kamaal, which brings together hyped producer Kamaal Williams (AKA Henry Wu) and fast-rising Afrobeat drummer Yussef Dayes. With such talent to draw on, you'd expect Black Focus to be rather good. Happily, it is, with the duo delivering a typically London-centric take on jazz funk. That means that they take as much inspiration from the work of Kaidi Tatham as, say, Herbie Hancock. The key to the album's success - and, yes, it is generally as special as Gilles Peterson suggests - is the fluid combination of Dayes' brilliant drumming and Williams' superb synth solos and effortlessly groovy Rhodes playing.

  2. Doin' What I Wanna (4:07)
Review: Since launching last year, the Dynamite Cuts has delivered a string of killer seven-inch singles featuring sought-after cuts from fantastic old albums and this is another must-have along the same lines. It boasts two tracks from Clarence Wheeler and the Enforcers' 1970 debut album, "Doing What We Wanna Do", neither of which have appeared on a "45" before. You'll find a riotous Hammond funk explosion rich in energetic, break-driven drumming and wild trumpet and organ solos on the B-side, with the similarly sweaty title track nestling on the A. This insatiable number is altogether deeper and looser in feel, with tasty group vocals rising above bustling drums, warm Hammond lines and punchy sax solos.

Review: New Zealand-born Lance Ferguson has been the beating heart of Melbourne's modern funk and soul scene for the best part of two decades. It's this that allowed him to gather many of the city's best musicians together to record "Rare Groove Spectrum", an album of fresh covers of rare and classic funk, soul and Latin jams. There are some killer versions to be found amongst the 11 tracks on offer. We're particularly enjoying the collective's riotous instrumental revision of Pleasure classic "Joyous", the strutting deep funk heaviness of "Egg Roll" (a similarly restless cover of a mysterious but much-played cut that should be familiar to dusty-fingered diggers and knowledgeable dancers) and the sumptuous summer breeze that is the combo's meandering take on Earth, Wind and Fire staple "Brazilian Rhyme". It is, though, all superb.

Review: Over the years, Italian eccentrics 291out have proved tricky to pin down. While their releases are rooted in the spacey end of the jazz-funk spectrum, they also touch on film soundtracks, quirky electronica and meandering progressive rock. This time out they're operating on a Latin tinged jazz-rock tip, with crunchy guitars, fuzz-soaked horns, rubbery bass and eyes-closed electric piano motifs rising above a head-nodding groove. The band's included "Alternative Version" is noticeably wilder and more intense, with a looser beat and a greater number of mind-mangling horn solos. In terms of remixes, you'll find Italian veterans Leo Mas and Fabrice at the controls. Their A-side revision sounds a little like a jazzier take on Italian Balearic rock merchants Almunia, while their flipside "Alternative Remix" is a bounding, peak-time-ready jazz-house workout.

Review: During its original lifespan in the early 1980s, Japanese imprint Johnny's Disk Record released some brilliantly weird and wonderful records, most of which now changed hands for eye-watering sums online. "Atsusa Mo Samusamo", the third album from obscure combo King Kong Paradise, is one such example. Here reissued for the first time since its original 1984 release, the set offers a surprisingly sun-kissed blend of Pat Metheny style jazz guitars, Wailers-style reggae riddims, wild electronics and lo-fi production that makes most of the tracks sound like they were recorded using microphones placed several hundred metres away from the band. It's an undeniably unique record and one that still sounds sublime 35 years after it was recorded.

  1. Orbit Bound (4:45)

Review: The latest limited-edition salvo on Jazzman's contemporary jazz offshoot Jazz45 comes courtesy of Soren Skov Orbit, a Copenhagen-based outfit formed by saxophonist Soren Lyhne Skov and pianist Peder Vind. The two tracks stick closely to the project's founding principles of fusing global musical traditions with modal jazz. A-side "Orbit Bound", where hissing cymbals, hypnotizing piano motifs, plodding double bass and ear-catching saxophone solos cluster around a droning bass clarinet, is probably the pick of the pair, though the more straight-up, trad-jazz warmth of "NV" is also very enjoyable. As debut outings go, it's hugely impressive; here's hoping we hear more from Skov and Vind in the months and years ahead.

There's an undeniably classic feel to his latest full-length excursion, "Criterion of the Senses", which sees him add smooth and effortlessly soulful English language vocals to rich backing tracks that variously doff a cap to sumptuous samba-jazz (wonderful duet "The Tiki's Broken There"), revivalist synth-boogie (standout "Your Satisfaction Is Mine"), AOR rock ("Shoulder Pads"), sugary jazz-funk ("Sweetest Berry", the Clavinet-happy shuffle of "Novice Never Noticed") and solo-laden smooth grooves ("X1 In Test").

Review: Japanese imprint Ultra Vybe is midway through a seven-inch series focusing on some of the many gems tucked away on albums released by legendary U.S "funky jazz" label Groove Merchant in their early 1970s. Their latest picks are taken from pianist Larry Willis's 1973 set "Inner Crisis". You'll find the album's title track - a warm, mesmerizing and surprisingly melancholic fusion of restless organ lines, jammed-out electric piano solos, classic jazz horns and fussy grooves - on side B, with "Out On The Coast" on the A. This jaunty jazz-funk affair is far more hard-hitting, thanks in no small part to some rousing sax lines, blistering funk drums, razor-sharp jazz guitars and a seriously heavy bassline.

Review: BBE latest "deep dive" into a widely underappreciated style focuses on a particularly fertile period in the history of Japan's "contemporary jazz" scene. Curated by renowned Japanese jazz diggers Tony Higgins and Mike Peden, J-Jazz focuses on material recorded and released between 1969 and '84, a period the label says represents a "golden age" for jazz in Japan. The compilation is both a serious history lesson and hugely enjoyable to listen to, featuring a mixture of U.S-influenced jazz-funk, fusion, post-modal and deep, spiritual improvisations. Naturally, all of the material has never been released outside of Japan before, with the vast majority of tracks being either ludicrously rare or sought-after. Simply essential, all told.

On My Way To Harlem
Cat: GP 712013. Rel: 25 Jun 13
  1. On My Way To Harlem (Jazz & Cole edit)
  2. 1960 What ? (Jazz & Cole edit)
Review: A modern day Scott-Heron, without the myriad of demons on his back, Grammy-nominated jazz singer Porter has such a distinctive voice, charm and band command. He clearly lends himself well to edit culture (as proved by the huge success of the many "1960 What?" versions in recent years) and this 7" from Expansion is no exception. "On My Way To Harlem" is straight up narrative jazz with fantastic attention paid to the subtle samba and solemn horns. "1960 What?" speaks for itself; far more authentic to the original than the other versions that have popped up, if you've not already got a favourite edit - Jazz & Cole have the answer.

Review: One of Baker's most iconic, enduring albums enjoys a reissue. Written and recorded two years after his debut with Vido Musso and as many years before he hit Hollywood and heroin, Chet's debut album is laced with his lullaby dulcets and a sombre, spacious musicianship that creates a bubble that somehow sits both in and ahead of its time. Regarded as one of his most important pieces of work and accepted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame in 2001, while it's clearly Chet at his youngest and purest, scratch the surface (both sonically and with the art of hindsight) and his barbed future is softly embedded in the album's DNA.

  1. The Revolution Will Not Be Televised
  2. Home Is Where the Hatred Is
Review: Wow, classics don't come much more special than this. A like-for-like repress of the 1970 RCA release, both sides here are soaked in Scott Heron's raw troubled soul. The endlessly sampled, hugely powerful and perfectly funky "Revolution" remains almost as poignant and prophetic as it was the day it was penned. "Home Is Where The Hatred Is" is much more personal and reveals his talent as a singer as much as the lead track boasts his poetry and ability to deliver a strong message.

  6. Truth (13:25)
Review: The music that makes up Harmony of Difference, Kamasi Washington's first EP of note since the release of acclaimed 2015 album The Epic, was premiered live as a "six-track movement" earlier this year. The "suite" - here stretched across both sides of an essential 12" - sees Washington continue to explore the idea of what it means to be black in America in the 21st century. Musically, the EP contains some of his smoothest and most laidback compositions yet, with all his musical collaborators being on fine form. The headline attraction is undoubtedly 14-minute flipside "The Truth", an almost operatic jazz epic full of swelling choral contributions, fizzing drum solos, rising horns and, of course, plenty of Washington's distinctive saxophone.

Review: Amongst fans of Brazilian music, Sivuca is arguably best known for his 1973 cover of "Ain't No Sunshine" - later a favourite on the rare groove scene - which re-casts the Bill Withers classic as a sumptuous chunk of shuffling samba sunshine. Here, the track gets reissued as part of Mr Bongo's brilliant Brazil 45s series, alongside his lesser-known - but no less impressive - cover of Edu Lobo's "Ponteio".

Review: The Awakening is the seventh and final studio album from The Ahmad Jamal trio. It was originally released way back in 1970, and in the years since has become something of a must-have for jazz collectors. Given that finding original vinyl copies is getting increasingly difficult, this reissue is more than welcome. Musically, it's a boisterous and hugely entertaining affair, with Jamal's virtuoso piano playing taking centre stage. With an accompanying drummer and double bass player providing steady, if unspectacular, backing, Jamal tickles the ivories like a man possessed. Along the way, he doffs his cap to a number of then popular jazz styles, remodeling them in his own image.

  9. Solomon Ilori - "Igbesi Aiye (Song Of Praise To God)" (13:17)
Review: Jazzman concludes the ninth volume in its essential "Spiritual Jazz" series with a second deep dive into the unheralded spirituality lurking in the farthest corners of the Blue Note back catalogue. Beginning with the Latin jazz-inspired brilliance of Joe Henderson's "El Barrio", the double vinyl set meanders through a selection of quality cuts, stopping enroute to take in the dreamy vocals of Duke Pearson's peerless ambient-jazz number "Cristo Redentor", dance along to Pete La Roca's spiraling "Malaguena" and get entranced by the dense African drums of Solomon Ilori's epic "Igbesi Aiye (Song Of Praise To God)". The latter track, in particular, is worth the admission price on its own.
