Review: The Sound's second album, From The Lions Mouth, solidified their stature as post-punk legends, despite their lack of mainstream recognition. Produced by Hugh Jones, the album exhibits a fuller sound compared to its predecessor, Jeopardy, while maintaining the band's atmospheric edge. Tracks like 'Winning' confront life's challenges with resilience, setting the tone for the album's introspective yet determined themes. The record effortlessly navigates between dynamic tracks like 'Fatal Flaw' and the atmospheric 'Silent Air,s shows the band's versatility and emotional depth. Adrian Borland's songwriting evokes a sense of loneliness tempered with a glimmer of hope, resonating with listeners even decades later. From The Lions Mouth stands as a timeless masterpiece of the new wave era, offering a poignant exploration of personal struggles and resilience. Despite their lack of commercial success, The Sound's influence on the underground music scene remains undeniable, cementing their place among post-punk icons. The album's reissue, with its spectacular sound quality and subtle inclusion of hidden gems like 'Hothouse,' pays homage to Borland's vision and the band's enduring legacy.

Review: Jeopardy is the debut studio album by English post-punk band the Sound, released in November 1980 via Korova. This being the heyday of the commercial music format, the album was released with the expectation of high chart performance, though it flopped on that front. Despite the anticlimax, Jeopardy went down in time as a dark post-punk paragon, invariably lauded by the small crock of critics who did hear it; this pattern would go onto be matched by the overall critical success of the Sound as a a band. The album's neo-noir, paranoiac hooks and exclamatory vocals make up its core aesthetic, though there is something truly authentic, an 'it' factor, that makes Jeopardy unique unto its own; its rapacious compositions, tight melodies and moments of toothy brightness add to this aura; it's as if they paved a hidden way for the more talented of South London bands of today.

Review: Ensoulment is the latest album from much loved English post-punk band The The. This legendary outfit, which first formed in 1979 but has since had many changes in line-up alligned around singer-songwriter and central member Matt Johnson as the only constant band member, showcases the band's latest sonic evolution and musical depths. Known for their poignant lyrics and innovative sound, they again deliver a rich mix that blends rock, post-punk, and new wave influences. This album reflects profound themes of existence, spirituality, and emotional complexity with meticulous production and Johnson's distinctive vocals creating an engaging record that proves Johnson and guests are still as creative as ever all these years on.

Review: The Sound were a band ahead of their time, and All Fall Down stands as their definitive contribution to their legacy. Despite facing commercial pressures from their label, Adrian Borland and the band stayed true to their artistic vision, delivering a masterpiece of post-punk melancholy and timeless songwriting. The album's ten tracks, marked by a sense of longing and introspection, showcase Borland's poetic lyricism and emotive vocals, from the haunting beauty of 'Monument' to the raw energy of 'Red Paint,' each song leaving a lasting impression. Review: Loaded, The Velvet Underground's final album featuring Lou Reed, epitomises a perfect rock 'n' roll record. Released in 1970 after their stint with Verve, it marked the band's shift to Atlantic Records under Ahmet Ertegun's directive for a hit-laden album. The absence of founding members John Cale and Maureen Tucker, coupled with Doug Yule's prominent role, shifts the album's dynamic but does not compromise its impact. With standout tracks like 'Sweet Jane' and 'Rock & Roll,' it feels like a greatest hits collection, expertly navigating rock archetypes. This 180-gram 45 RPM double LP reissue by Analogue Productions, pressed at Quality Record Pressings and housed in a tip-on old style gatefold jacket by Stoughton Printing, provides an exquisite listening experience. A certified rock classic and a significant chapter in the Velvets' legacy.

Review: The first The The record in 25 years. Ensoulment, a 12-song record, encompasses characteristic topics ranging from love and sex, war and politics, and life and death, culminating in an attempting bottling of what it means to be a human being in the 21st Century. These establishing statements decrypted, Ensoulment is a mercurial mood, spanning decries of capital to global surveillance to hope in quick succession. Led by the maverick breakaway post-punk number known as 'Cognitive Dissident', the album instantly hits us with a mood of surveillance-state-subjected paranoia and lament - heard throughout - by way of lyrics musing on 'screen grabs', 'curtailed' and 'servile/surveilled'. The palate is murky, grave, and yet still somewhat somehow funky, with lead brain Matt Johnson playing up a distinctly gruff Waits-esque 'ahh'. Can some flair, some enjoyment, be found in the present muck? Seems so.

Review: The latest compilation on CTR, curated by Jason Boardman of Before I Die Records, dives into the rich, underground landscape of early 1980s post-punk. This collection offers a fascinating glimpse into the era's DIY ethos, featuring rare and never-before-heard tracks that encapsulate the innovative spirit of the time. From the 2-Tone-influenced Skeet in Coventry to the dub experiments of Surface Mutants with Cabaret Voltaire, the album uncovers a trove of hidden gems that have largely flown under the radar. One track even boasts a unique post-punk diss track, adding a touch of rebellion to the mix. Boardman has unearthed a variety of tracks, some even sampled by the likes of DJ Shadow, showcasing the lasting influence of these obscure artists. The compilation highlights a time when independent musicians, studios, and labels banded together, bypassing major labels in pursuit of their creative vision. While it's not a comprehensive guide to the era, this album shines a spotlight on the overlooked and underappreciated, giving these artists the recognition they've long deserved, not to mention the enduring power and creativity of the post-punk underground.

Review: Jack White's sixth solo album, No Name, arrives as a delightful surprise, offering a raw and invigorating return to his roots. Released with minimal fanfare and initially devoid of track titles, this album shows off White's playful and enigmatic nature. Fans of all stripes will find something to love here: diehard collectors get a rare gem for their collections, while those simply drawn to White's music can dive into 13 new tracks, now officially titled and available on vinyl. Produced at Third Man Records Studios in Nashville, No Name strips away the grandiosity of White's recent experiments, embracing a raw, unpolished sound that harks back to his White Stripes days. The album's blues-infused rock, with its razor-sharp riffs and primal drumming, feels more alive and immediate than his recent work. Songs like 'Bless Yourself' channel the heavy, bruising power of early Shellac and Led Zeppelin, while 'Terminal Archenemy Endling' blends heavy rock with spiritual uplift. White's lyrics are sharp and biting, delivering both humor and intensity. Tracks like 'Archbishop Harold Holmes' and 'What's the Rumpus?' showcase his ability to balance the sublime and the ridiculous, with catchy hooks and incisive commentary. Leaner and more focused than he's been in years, No Name is a thrilling reminder of White's genius and overall, an enjoyable rock album to listen to.

Jerry Cantrell's guitar work remains as powerful as ever, driving the album with emotional intensity, particularly in tracks like 'Your Decision,' where the raw honesty in the lyrics is striking. Duvall's contributions shine, especially on 'Last of My Kind,' where he brings a new energy to the group without attempting to replicate Staley's iconic voice. The title track, 'Black Gives Way to Blue,' is a heart-wrenching tribute to Staley, featuring a sparse yet haunting arrangement with piano by Elton John. The song's quiet fade-out leaves a lasting impact, a fitting close to an album that balances grief with renewal. Black Gives Way to Blue not only honours Alice In Chains' legacy but also sets a strong foundation for their future, proving that the band's creative spirit remains unbroken.

Review: Soft Tissue highlights the continued evolution for Tindersticks, their 14th album representing a dynamic exploration of new sonic territories. With a palpable sense of mutual curiosity driving their creative process, the band delves into intimate conversations that yield a rich blend of sound and emotion. From the opening track 'New World' to the soulful 'Turned My Back' and the dappled hope of 'Soon to be April,' Soft Tissue navigates themes of personal and public worlds with finesse. Stuart Staples' introspective reflections, supported by the band's tight arrangements and restless details, create a compelling sonic landscape that is both intimate and experimental. With vocals, strings, and brass completed in London, the album upholds Tindersticks' longstanding readiness to stretch themselves creatively.

Review: Coldplay's A Rush of Blood to the Head back in 2002 was a move on from their debut that showed deeper emotional and sonic complexity. With Chris Martin's distinctive voice at the helm, the album features anthems like 'Clocks' and 'The Scientist' which blend atmospheric rock with introspective lyrics. Tracks such as 'God Put a Smile Upon Your Face' and 'In My Place' highlight the band's ability to fuse melodic hooks with poignant themes and the album's exploration of love, loss and introspection, supported as always by grand and dynamic arrangements and epic production, remains a standout in the band's catalogue.

Review: The Jesus Lizard's return with Rack marks a significant moment for fans of post-hardcore. Their first album since 1998's Blue, this release is a testament to their enduring influence and sound. 'Hide & Seek,' the lead single, is a vibrant track that showcases the band's signature style, with David Yow's vocals leading the charge. The album as a whole feels fresh yet familiar, with nods to their past but a clear focus on new directions. Recorded with producer Paul Allen, the band sounds as tight and energetic as ever, showcasing their remarkable chemistry. Overall, Rack is a welcome return from a band that has left an indelible mark on the post-hardcore genre.

Review: The Smile's upcoming album Cutouts, marks another step in the band’s exploration of diverse sonic landscapes. Following their earlier 2024 album Wall of Eyes, this project further underscores the trio’s commitment to musical experimentation. Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead, and drummer Tom Skinner crafted Cutouts at Oxford and Abbey Road Studios, with Sam Petts-Davies producing. The vinyl edition is expected to enhance the fidelity of the band's dynamic range, particularly showcasing Yorke's legendary vocal presence. Two singles from the album have already debuted to add to the anticipation of this album. They offer a look into the album's eclectic mix of styles, blending elements of jazz, krautrock, and progressive rock. This blend of influences is delivered with a raw, adventurous energy that distinguishes The Smile from their Radiohead roots. Cutouts is expected to unify these varied influences into a compelling sonic experience.

Review: Suede's Dog Man Star, reissued in a half-speed mastered edition for its 30th anniversary, stands as a darkly sensual and troubled masterpiece. Initially overlooked due to its experimental nature and internal band conflicts, this album has since been recognized as Suede's pinnacle. Distancing themselves from Brit-pop, Suede crafted a sound blending glam-rock influences with a moodier, cinematic touch. The album features standout tracks like the gothic 'We Are The Pigs' and the epic 'The Asphalt World,' showcasing Bernard Butler's intricate guitar work. Songs like 'The Wild Ones' and 'Still Life' highlight Brett Anderson's lyrical talent, channeling romantic and nihilistic themes reminiscent of Morrissey. The album's dramatic lyricism and unique tone, from the robotic 'Introducing The Band' to the sparse 'The 2 of Us,' reflect Anderson's stream-of-consciousness writing style. Dog Man Star is an ornate and consistent record, celebrated for its grandiose sound and dark beauty. It remains a definitive statement of Suede's artistic vision, capturing their unique blend of drama and sensuality.

Review: The second part of Matador's reissues of the essential early records by Texas's Butthole Surfers continues with three of their most insane slabs -- 1985's Cream Corn from the Socket of Davis, 1987's Locust Abortion Technician and 1988's Hairway to Steven. The second of these three, Locust Abortion Technician marked the meso-morphosis of the band's transmutation from Texan outcasts to global sensations. Compared to the still somewhat demo-qual feel of Cream Corn, Locust Abortion Technician was also their most rapacious outing yet, bringing their trademark scuzzy guitars and gassy, so-called 'Gibbytronix' vocal effects units - an invention of the band's own Gibby Haynes - to fuller prominence.

Review: After two decades of inconsistent releases, Aghori Mhori Mei marks a triumphant return for The Smashing Pumpkins. This album recaptures the glory of what made the band a staple in alternative rock, featuring Billy Corgan's enduring creativity and the band's unique sonic identity. Unlike their recent work, this record avoids self-referential pitfalls and embraces a fresh, darkly atmospheric sound. Opening with 'Edin,' the album immediately impresses with Black Sabbath-inspired riffs and a guitar duel that echoes the band's early '90s brilliance. Tracks like 'Pentagrams' and '999' highlight the band's ability to blend complex, layered compositions with emotional resonance. 'Sighommi' stands out with its Deftones-like riffing and Iha's intuitive guitar work, making it a prime single candidate. One of the most exciting tracks from those that had a sneak peak of the album is 'Goeth the Fall,' which merges late 90s alt-rock sensibilities with the Pumpkins' signature melancholy, proving to be one of Corgan's finest compositions. It's a rewarding listen and a hopeful sign of the band's revitalised potential.

Review: Caribou shares his latest record, this time for City Slang, Honey. The timely follow-up to 2020's Suddenly, Honey comes preceded by the forerunning singles 'Broke My Heart', 'Volume' and 'Honey'. Caribou aka. Dan Snaith has more than proven his mettle as a multifarious artist, with the toweringly popular Odessa album only scratching the surface of what could otherwise be described as a much more experimental, tricky and salubriously varied discography. Honey plays up the pop-oriented capabilities of Snaith's many-tentacled sound, circling the intentionally mystified identity of the artist himself; 'Come Find Me' asks the listener to come find Snaith, while its corresponding music video features a childlike figure in a Brave New World-style jumpsuit, dancing to the song, as if to suggest a coquettish playfulness, poking through the swellingly progressive, end-of-summer house track. Adding to the pangram of bright and hopeful post-folktronica hits, Honey is sure to attract all the late-summer dance bees.

Review: Pixies return with The Night The Zombies Came, their tenth album, marking 35 years since Doolittle cemented their place in alternative rock history. Building on the momentum of their 2022 album Doggerel, the band deliver 13 new tracks that prove to be among the most cinematic soundscapes of their career. The album weaves together eclectic themes like Druidism, apocalyptic shopping malls and medieval-themed restaurants. Black Francis, the band's primary songwriter, describes the album as a series of fragmented narratives that come together to form a kind of movie. The Pixies' trademark blend of surreal lyrics and dynamic "loud-quiet-loud" song structures remain intact, yet the new material explores fresh, imaginative territories. Having influenced iconic bands like Nirvana, Radiohead and Weezer, Pixies have long been a cornerstone of alternative rock and now, with Emma Richardson (formerly of Band of Skulls) joining as bassist after Paz Lenchantin's departure, they continue to evolve while maintaining their distinctive edge.

It's produced by David Holmes and includes cover art by Jim Lambie. The recording process began in 2019, with Bobby Gillespie initially crafting lyrics solo on an acoustic guitar. Encouraged by producer Holmes, the band recorded across Belfast, London and Los Angeles. Gillespie describes the album as embodying a theme of conflict and resilience, inspired by the Glaswegian term "come ahead," which signifies a defiant spirit. The album marks Primal Scream's first release since the passing of longtime member Martin Duffy in 2022. Come Ahead promises to blend the band's trademark evolution with fresh, bold sounds.

He was a notable name in Cornwall and the West Country's music scenes with previous projects, Artistic Control and Aaah! which have come back via reissues many times in the last ten years. Imago was a new one-ff project that first emerged with one track on the Perfect Motion compilation curated by NTS Radio's Bruno and Flo Dill and now the full LP, originally released in 1985 on the local label A Real Kavoom, has been remastered and added to with three additional gems. Stone's teenage punk influences sit next to Imago's eclectic approach to sound that blends new wave and psychedelic elements into something irresistible.

Review: Alan Sparhawk's White Roses, My God offers a deeply personal exploration of grief and creativity. The album reflects the impact of the passing of Sparhawk's wife, Mimi Parker, from cancer in 2022. Known for his role in Low, Sparhawk's latest work showcases his willingness to dive into new sonic landscapes. Each track is crafted solely by Sparhawk, who used a range of new tools and techniques to build this intimate record. The album's experimental nature echoes influences from artists like Childish Gambino and 100 Gecs, with hints of Neil Young's Trans in its approach. On tracks like 'Feel Something,' Sparhawk employs a vocoder to challenge conventional emotional expression, creating a raw and engaging sound. Despite its innovative edges, White Roses, My God maintains a connection to Sparhawk's previous work while pushing boundaries. This record invites listeners into a new chapter of his musical journey, blending heartfelt lyrics with experimental beats.

Review: Released in February 1984, The Flat Earth by Thomas Dolby followed the success of his debut album, The Golden Age Of Wireless. This second album showcased Dolby's evolution as an artist with a more mature, jazzy, and organic sound compared to his earlier work. Forty years later, the album remains a remarkable piece of 1980s music. On Side-1, The Flat Earth shines with tracks like 'Dissidents,' which features an intriguing electronic sound with a hint of Talking Heads' influence, and two beautiful, mellower compositions that follow. On the flip side, 'White City' offers a poppier vibe, while 'Mulu The Rain Forest' and 'I Scare Myself' bring a unique contrast, the latter now appreciated for its jazzy pop elements. 'Hyperactive!' stands out as a lively synth-funk track, a shinning example at 80s synth pop still. Dolby's meticulous production, coupled with stellar performances from his session musicians, results in a warm and timeless sound. The Flat Earth is a testament to Dolby's artistry, with its crystal-clear production and enduring appeal.

Review: While former New Young Pony Club member (and sometime Hot Chip collaborator) has devoted much of her career to DJing, her occasional solo musical releases have always been strong. Her solo debut LP, 2021's Private Sunshine, was excellent, but if anything this belated sophomore effort is even better. The album's genius lies in its consistency and the first signs of a smart, stylish, trademark boogie and proto-house influenced synth-pop sound, with extra authenticity provided by clear sonic nods to classic 1980s cuts from NYC and beyond. She's always been a talent, but it feels like a genuine crossover moment could be upon us - helped, no doubt, by the quality of the sassy 'Frequency', slow-motion jam 'Stop The Rain' and future dancefloor anthem 'In My Heart'.

Review: Kim Deal's debut album Nobody Loves You More is a masterful culmination of years of musical exploration and collaboration, though it's not her first venture under her own name. In 2013, she self-released a five-part, ten-song 7" vinyl series, with several of those tracks reappearing here, notably 'Are You Mine?' and 'Wish I Was,' both of which date back to 2011. These early compositions were crafted shortly after Deal wrapped up the Pixies' 'Lost Cities Tour' and made the move to Los Angeles. Over the ensuing years, the album gradually took shape, with contributions from a roster of long-time collaborators and new faces alike, including Breeders members past and present, Jack Lawrence, and Savages' Fay Milton and Ayse Hassan. The final touches were recorded with Steve Albini in 2022, solidifying the album's place as a celebration of Deal's profound impact on the alternative music scene. Musically, the album traverses a broad spectrum, from the infectious energy of 'Coast' and 'Crystal Breath' to the introspective depth of 'Disobedience' and 'A Good Time Pushed.' The result is an album that highlights Deal's undeniable talent as a pivotal figure in the indie rock world.

Tonics & Twisted Chasers
Tonics & Twisted Chasers (limited translucent orange vinyl LP (indie exclusive))
Cat: SV 204X.
Review: Tonics & Twisted Chasers emerged in 1996 as a surprise release, marking a distinctive entry in Guided by Voices' prolific catalogue. Initially available as a mail-order only, vinyl-only album, its crude black-and-white sleeve reflected the band's DIY roots. This album, a collaboration between Robert Pollard and Tobin Sprout, deviates from the polished approach of Under the Bushes Under the Stars. It embraces lo-fi aesthetics, characterised by ultra-short tracks and raw creativity. Sprout's eclectic backing music, often featuring a drum machine, meshes with Pollard's stream-of-consciousness lyrics, resulting in a collection of nineteen songs, most under two minutes. Tonics & Twisted Chasers stands out for its experimental spirit and brevity, reminiscent of child-like creativity. Tracks like '158 Years of Beautiful Sex' and 'Look, It's Baseball' exude a spontaneous, unfiltered charm. Despite the album's modest presentation, it is filled with unique gems like the melancholic 'Is She Ever?' and the energetic 'Wingtip Repair'. The band's ability to fuse lo-fi production with profound musicality is elite. Tonics & Twisted Chasers is a hidden treasure, embodying the unrestrained and playful essence of Guided by Voices.

Review: LA threesome ASHRR aka lead vocalist Steven Davis and producer-musician-vocalists Josh Charles and Ethan Allen are back with a brilliant new album for Ralph Lawson's superb 20/20 Vision Recordings that finds them working by the old mantra of 'art for art's sake'. This effortlessly eclectic record collides electronic soul, post-punk, space disco and indie-dance and is rich in melancholic melody, hazy, late-summer moods and late-night dancing. The vocals bring an indie edge to jangling delights like 'Please Don't Stop The Rain' while 'What's Been Turning You On' is a laidback and languid groove for lazy sessions.

Review: Marking the tenth anniversary of Mac DeMarco's seminal album Salad Days, this special edition is here to celebrate. This 2xLP evergreen holographic vinyl includes both Salad Days and Salad Days Demos, complemented by an 18"x24" poster and a 12-page booklet with new liner notes by Mac himself, all housed in a striking Chamber of Reflection mirror gatefold sleeve. Salad Days, originally released in 2014, showcases DeMarco's evolution as an artist. Tracks like 'Passing Out Pieces' and 'Chamber of Reflection' highlight his expanding sound palette, blending icy synths and soulful crooning. The lead single, set against overdriven organ chords, captures his candid self-awareness and lyrical depth. The album retains the crisp, lush production reminiscent of the John Lennon/Phil Spector era, with Mac's unique contemporary twist. Songs like 'Brother' and 'Treat Her Better' exemplify his signature styleislinky lead guitars, swooning vocal melodies and heartfelt sincerity. This anniversary edition not only celebrates a pivotal moment in Mac DeMarco's career but also offers fans a beautifully packaged and thoughtfully curated experience.

Review: Rival Schools' Found is a compelling collection of rarities, demos and alternate takes, compiled during the years following the release of their 2001 debut, United By Fate. Initially released over a decade ago, the band has collaborated with Run For Cover Records to reissue this collection on limited-edition vinyl, timed alongside the reissue of their 2011 album Pedals. This version of Found is particularly special, with a rare yellow vinyl edition limited to just 200 copies. Found offers eleven tracks that showcase the band's musical experimentation and evolution during the decade between their debut and Pedals. Led by Walter Schreifels, a pivotal figure in the hardcore scene through his work with Youth of Today, Gorilla Biscuits, and Quicksand, Rival Schools also features members Ian Love, Cache Tolman, and Sammy Siegler, whose other projects include Iceburn, CIV, and Glassjaw. Found seamlessly fits into Rival Schools' discography, bridging the post-hardcore sound of their debut with hints of the more melodic direction they would later explore. Tracks like 'Reaching Out' and 'Paranoid Detectives' still pulse with the intensity and urgency reminiscent of Schreifels' earlier days, while songs like 'Tell It All To Me' reveal a growing emotional depth within the band's sound. Found remains a significant piece of Rival Schools' unique trajectory, capturing a moment in time that fans will find both nostalgic and rewarding.

Review: The second part of a series of essential early records by Texas's Butthole Surfers features three of their most unhinged releases: 1985's Cream Corn from the Socket of Davis, 1987's Locust Abortion Technician, and 1988's Hairway to Steven. These records capture the Butthole Surfers' evolution from Texan misfits to renowned provocateurs of the American underground scene. In 1985, they were the darlings of hallucinogen-fueled punk enthusiasts. By 1988, they had toured Europe, gained international recognition, and established a base in Driftwood, Texas. Cream Corn from the Socket of Davis offers a tantalizing glimpse into the Butthole Surfers' chaotic genius. Featuring two tracks from Rembrandt and two new recordings from their home studio in Winterville, Georgia, the EP showcases the band's unique blend of precision and madness. 'Moving to Florida' stands out as a surreal, Beefheart-esque trip, while the other tracks are equally mind-blowing. This EP serves as a perfect, bite-sized introduction to the delirious brilliance that the band would continue to unleash in their subsequent releases. These albums are remastered by Golden himself adding to the importance of these.

Review: The Hard Quartet's self titled debut album, marks the arrival of a band that is anything but ordinary. Comprised of four music giantsiEmmett Kelly, Stephen Malkmus, Matt Sweeney, and Jim Whiteithis ensemble is a meeting of minds that have already left significant marks on the music world. Their collaboration, now crystallized under the name The Hard Quartet, promises a fresh take on rock 'n' roll, melding the familiar with the new and the melodic with the enigmatic. Each member brings a wealth of experience from their storied careers. Emmett Kelly is known for his work with The Cairo Gang and collaborations with Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Ty Segall. Stephen Malkmus, a cornerstone of Pavement and the Jicks, needs no introduction to indie rock fans. Matt Sweeney, whose work spans Chavez to Superwolves, and collaborations with Johnny Cash and Cat Power, adds further depth. Finally, Jim White, the drumming force behind Dirty Three and Xylouris White, rounds out this formidable lineup. Their self-titled debut, available in limited edition Coke Bottle Clear Vinyl, collects the combined genius of these four musicians, offering a sound that is both groundbreaking and timeless.
