The second of these three, Locust Abortion Technician marked the meso-morphosis of the band's transmutation from Texan outcasts to global sensations. Compared to the still somewhat demo-qual feel of Cream Corn, Locust Abortion Technician was also their most rapacious outing yet, bringing their trademark scuzzy guitars and gassy, so-called 'Gibbytronix' vocal effects units - an invention of the band's own Gibby Haynes - to fuller prominence.

Review: Caribou shares his latest record, this time for City Slang, Honey. The timely follow-up to 2020's Suddenly, Honey comes preceded by the forerunning singles 'Broke My Heart', 'Volume' and 'Honey'. Caribou aka. Dan Snaith has more than proven his mettle as a multifarious artist, with the toweringly popular Odessa album only scratching the surface of what could otherwise be described as a much more experimental, tricky and salubriously varied discography. Honey plays up the pop-oriented capabilities of Snaith's many-tentacled sound, circling the intentionally mystified identity of the artist himself; 'Come Find Me' asks the listener to come find Snaith, while its corresponding music video features a childlike figure in a Brave New World-style jumpsuit, dancing to the song, as if to suggest a coquettish playfulness, poking through the swellingly progressive, end-of-summer house track. Review: In the early 1980s, Britain had a vibrant cassette culture that now gets spotlighted through a limited edition 12" featuring multi-instrumentalist Kez Stone's project, Imago. He was a notable name in Cornwall and the West Country's music scenes with previous projects, Artistic Control and Aaah! which have come back via reissues many times in the last ten years. Imago was a new one-ff project that first emerged with one track on the Perfect Motion compilation curated by NTS Radio's Bruno and Flo Dill and now the full LP, originally released in 1985 on the local label A Real Kavoom, has been remastered and added to with three additional gems. Review: While former New Young Pony Club member (and sometime Hot Chip collaborator) has devoted much of her career to DJing, her occasional solo musical releases have always been strong. Her solo debut LP, 2021's Private Sunshine, was excellent, but if anything this belated sophomore effort is even better. The album's genius lies in its consistency and the first signs of a smart, stylish, trademark boogie and proto-house influenced synth-pop sound, with extra authenticity provided by clear sonic nods to classic 1980s cuts from NYC and beyond. She's always been a talent, but it feels like a genuine crossover moment could be upon us - helped, no doubt, by the quality of the sassy 'Frequency', slow-motion jam 'Stop The Rain' and future dancefloor anthem 'In My Heart'.

Review: Kim Deal's debut album Nobody Loves You More is a masterful culmination of years of musical exploration and collaboration, though it's not her first venture under her own name. In 2013, she self-released a five-part, ten-song 7" vinyl series, with several of those tracks reappearing here, notably 'Are You Mine?' and 'Wish I Was,' both of which date back to 2011. These early compositions were crafted shortly after Deal wrapped up the Pixies' 'Lost Cities Tour' and made the move to Los Angeles. Over the ensuing years, the album gradually took shape, with contributions from a roster of long-time collaborators and new faces alike, including Breeders members past and present, Jack Lawrence, and Savages' Fay Milton and Ayse Hassan. The final touches were recorded with Steve Albini in 2022, solidifying the album's place as a celebration of Deal's profound impact on the alternative music scene. Musically, the album traverses a broad spectrum, from the infectious energy of 'Coast' and 'Crystal Breath' to the introspective depth of 'Disobedience' and 'A Good Time Pushed.' The result is an album that highlights Deal's undeniable talent as a pivotal figure in the indie rock world.

Review: Tonics & Twisted Chasers emerged in 1996 as a surprise release, marking a distinctive entry in Guided by Voices' prolific catalogue. Initially available as a mail-order only, vinyl-only album, its crude black-and-white sleeve reflected the band's DIY roots. This album, a collaboration between Robert Pollard and Tobin Sprout, deviates from the polished approach of Under the Bushes Under the Stars. It embraces lo-fi aesthetics, characterised by ultra-short tracks and raw creativity. Sprout's eclectic backing music, often featuring a drum machine, meshes with Pollard's stream-of-consciousness lyrics, resulting in a collection of nineteen songs, most under two minutes. Tonics & Twisted Chasers stands out for its experimental spirit and brevity, reminiscent of child-like creativity. Review: Rival Schools' Found is a compelling collection of rarities, demos and alternate takes, compiled during the years following the release of their 2001 debut, United By Fate. Initially released over a decade ago, the band has collaborated with Run For Cover Records to reissue this collection on limited-edition vinyl, timed alongside the reissue of their 2011 album Pedals. This version of Found is particularly special, with a rare yellow vinyl edition limited to just 200 copies. Found offers eleven tracks that showcase the band's musical experimentation and evolution during the decade between their debut and Pedals. Led by Walter Schreifels, a pivotal figure in the hardcore scene through his work with Youth of Today, Gorilla Biscuits, and Quicksand, Rival Schools also features members Ian Love, Cache Tolman, and Sammy Siegler, whose other projects include Iceburn, CIV, and Glassjaw. Found seamlessly fits into Rival Schools' discography, bridging the post-hardcore sound of their debut with hints of the more melodic direction they would later explore. Review: The second part of a series of essential early records by Texas's Butthole Surfers features three of their most unhinged releases: 1985's Cream Corn from the Socket of Davis, 1987's Locust Abortion Technician, and 1988's Hairway to Steven. These records capture the Butthole Surfers' evolution from Texan misfits to renowned provocateurs of the American underground scene. In 1985, they were the darlings of hallucinogen-fueled punk enthusiasts. By 1988, they had toured Europe, gained international recognition, and established a base in Driftwood, Texas. Cream Corn from the Socket of Davis offers a tantalizing glimpse into the Butthole Surfers' chaotic genius. Featuring two tracks from Rembrandt and two new recordings from their home studio in Winterville, Georgia, the EP showcases the band's unique blend of precision and madness. 'Moving to Florida' stands out as a surreal, Beefheart-esque trip, while the other tracks are equally mind-blowing. This EP serves as a perfect, bite-sized introduction to the delirious brilliance that the band would continue to unleash in their subsequent releases.
