Review: Ready for take off? Curious Italo disco gem from lesser spotted alias Boeing in 1982 enjoys a cheeky reissue and you'd be wise to fasten your seatbelts. Sprightly, funky and characterised by a classic, slightly trippy voice-of-god spoken word, cute synth squiggles and a rolling percussive layer that's almost too addictive. Comes complete with an instrumental if the vocal commands are just a little too much for you. Hurry, there's only 500 copies before they fly away for good!

  1. Going Back To My Roots (9:44)
  2. Going Back To My Roots (Danny Krivit Chant edit) (5:37)
Review: While the later Richie Havens and Odyssey covers were far more commercially successful, you can't beat Lamont Dozier's original 1977 version of "Going Back To My Roots" - a near ten-minute workout that starts as a disco-soul stomper, ends as a chant-along Afro-funk stepper, and was arranged by none other than South African jazz legend Hugh Masekela. Dozier's impeccable take takes pride of place on side A of this Groovin' Records reissue, with a fresh re-edit by Danny Krivit - who previously tweaked the Richie Havens version - on the flip. Brilliantly, Krivit ignores much of the song, instead extending and rearranging the sweaty, tropical end section of Dozier's original mix into an inspired track of its own.

Review: Besides having one a particularly crucial name, Mannheim artist Freethinker Funk Essence knows his way around a big fat juicy groove. Building up a solid reputation on Timewarp and Hungarian imprint Mustbeat, here we find him landing on rising Swiss funk imprint Burning Sole with two limited work outs; "Ocean Drive" struts with some fine jazz boogie with fizzy Jean-Jacques Perrey style synth squiggles galore. "Liquor Bar" rolls at a slightly more leisurely pace, a swaggering break and lazy woozy keys. Only 100 pressed.

Review: Lexx and company's Phantom Island imprint has yet to release a duff 12" since springing up back in 2014. Their latest limited edition EP marks the debut of Fuga Ronto, a project birthed by two of the label's four co-founders, Ron Shiller (he of Drumpoet Community fame) and DJ Foster (AKA Tobias Schweizer). Predictably, the five tracks on offer are woozy, Balearic affairs that draw influence from the more humid, horizontal and new age-influenced end of 1980s European synth-pop. Some may draw comparisons with Franco-Belgian outfit Antena (they of "Camino Del Sol" fame), while others will point to Dunkelziffer as a clear inspiration. Whatever the various influences, the Invisible Escape EP is stunningly beautiful and exquisitely produced.

  8. Totes Preesh - "The Spirit Is Alive" (8:58)
Review: For a six-year period between 2006 and 2012, a tiny Italian restaurant in Lower East Side became one of New York's hippest weeknight hangouts. With the assistance of unofficial promoter/musical programmer Jason Kincade, Golf Channel has put together this celebratory collection, featuring tracks from regular visitors to the unlikely party space. There's much to admire, from the jazz-tinged deep dub disco goodness of Dedication's brilliant "Let Us Rock You", and the Loose Control Band's woozy deep disco treat "Doin' It", to the low-slung disco-acid atmospherics of Populette's "Another One", and the expansive synthesizer soundscapes of Thugfucker's "100". Best of all, though, is the cacophonous, acid-friend disco-punk madness of Totes Preesh's "The Spirit Is Alive".

Review: Mule take us back 40 years for a timely reissue of Longstanding Tokyo jazz sage Eiji Nakayama's debut album. Across four tracks we're shot across the plains for a little Afro fusion on "Aya's Samba", we're tooted into a blissful slumber on "Yellow Living" and taken out across choppy oceans on "See Sea Town" before we're driven down bluesy country lanes at fast pace on the white knuckle organ led finale "Far-away Road". Deep in narrative detail, dynamic in pace, this album has stands just as tall as the man himself.

  2. You're My Number 1 (dub mix)
Review: In a rare exception from their usual hyper-obscure archive finds, Best Record have opted this time to give a proper reissue to a diggers favourite which enjoyed a second turn in the spotlight via a Dimitri From Paris compilation on BBE. Radiance and Andrea Stone's "You're My Number 1" is everything a boogie jam should be, from the liquid funk of the bassline to the snap of the drums - we defy anyone to stay off the floor when this pearl drops. It's no surprise to know it was mixed by the legendary M&M Productions team, featuring disco mix champion John Morales. The original is ace, but the extended dub mix on the flip is the one that will have the heads freaking out.

Review: Two larger than life ladies, Izora Rhodes and Martha Wash (from the aptly named group Two Tons Of Fun) get sassy on this vintage slice of funk "I've Been Down" taken from Sylvester's self-titled LP. The song is basically a rant about their men through verse (while fawning over them in the chorus), underpinned by a solid funk 70's groove. Flipside is a mid tempo soul groover.

Review: For those with an interest in the development of electronic music in the late '70s and early '80s, the sporadic synth-wave collections from New York-based Minimal Wave Records have always been essential listening. This latest missive, originally released on a limited vinyl pressing earlier this year, offers another treasure trove of little known and unreleased material from the period. Most pleasingly, it offers a truly global outlook, showcasing music from Japan, the US, UK and the former Yugoslavia. Predictably, there's much to enjoy, from the skewiff vocoder electro of Polaroid and low-end madness of Robert Lawrence to the synth-phonic doodlings of Reserve and new wave strut of Danton's Voice.
