Dutty Kong (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: LIONCHG 021. Rel: 05 Mar 18
  1. Dutty Kong (5:07)
  2. Dutty Kong (Alter Echo & E3 Moonrise remix) (5:05)
Review: Hand stamped, vinyl-only, Lion Charge roar again. This time it's all about Boston's AXH who ploughs through the noise with a rumbling classically-tuned dub piece with kicks heavy enough to crush your house. Flip for a barbed version excursion from Alter Echo & E3 Moonrise where the lines between dubstep and dub techno are so thin they vanish before your ears. Don't sleep on this one.

  1. Gutter Riddim (3:32)
  2. Hot Head (3:45)
Review: The stars have aligned on this one: Youngsta's impeccable Sentry imprint has meant the business since it launched last year with dBridge and it's got hotter ever since. Now battered and bruised by two Caspa workouts, the message is even louder. "Gutter Riddim" is a powerful groaner with warped bass and slight trap elements in the rolling drums while "Hot Head" plays with our senses with a vicious angular drop that suddenly explodes into the wobble fest of your (wet) dreams. Stinking.

Hard Food EP (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: TEC 100. Rel: 05 Mar 18
  1. Riko Dan & Joker - "Hard Food" (3:32)
  2. Riko Dan & Pinch - "Vibrations" (3:44)
  3. Riko Dan & Walton - "Slap It Up" (3:26)
  4. Riko Dan & Mumdance - "Hungry" (3:29)
  5. Riko Dan & Ziro - "Alright Then" (4:06)
  6. Pinch & Mumdance - "Big Slug" (feat Riko Dan - Walton remix) (4:35)
Review: To mark a century of releases, admirable Bristol imprint Tectonic has served up something rather special: an EP of future bass business that sees long-serving grime MC Riko Dan adding his flow to fresh beats from some of the label's heaviest hitters. Check, for example, the woozy "purple" synths, ragged sub-bass and stepping beats of the Joker-produced "Hard Food", the indsustrial-strength grime assault of the Pinch-produced "Vibration" and the sparse, clandestine rumble of "Hungry", where Riko Dan's gruff patois flow rises above a skeletal groove. Elsewhere, the Ziro-helmed "Alright Then" sounds like a club anthem in waiting, and Walton's remix of "Big Slug" - a previous club cut from Pinch and Mumdance - is an ethereal, string-laden treat.

  8. Fly Away (feat Charli Brix) (4:13)
Review: Blessed upon the world last November, South African newcomer Escapism Refuge's mesmerising debut album Hold enjoys a deluxe vinyl issue with a selection of highlights and new remixes. Bliss from the moment "Me Myself & I" stumbles into view, we glide from the clicky two-step of "Savage Lust" to Synkro's slo-mo soul take on "Fly Away", we float from the staggered snare rolls of "Mistakes" to the melancholy haze of "Courage". One to Hold onto.

Mad Hatter (12")
Cat: CRUCIAL 016. Rel: 19 Mar 18
  1. Mad Hatter (5:08)
  2. Galata (4:58)
Review: Rotterdam's Hebbe continues his rich vein of trippy form with this debut on Crucial. "Mad Hatter" lives up to its name as it pings with warped textures that fly in and out when they're not supposed to while "Galata" stomps and swaggers with dusty eastern strings as it gradually develops a stern vocal message. Crucial by name.

Dream Eater 002 (limited 12")
Cat: DREAMEATER 002. Rel: 05 Mar 18
  1. JT The Goon - "Blizzard" (4:40)
  2. Sir Hiss - "Casablanca" (4:10)
  3. Dr Hugo - "Nightfall" (5:35)
  4. Polonis - "N" (3:44)
  5. JFO - "Tell Dem" (4:12)
  6. Filthy Gears - "Filthy Sax" (5:06)
Review: Prime instrumental grime from the mysterious and fledgling Dream Eater crew. Once again it's a broadsword swathe across the beat spectrum. JT goes Oriental with his staccato "Blizzard" while Sir Hiss looks to LA for inspiration with his string sweeping "Casablanca", Dr Hugo bakes up a devilish sine wobble on "Nightfall", Polonis's "N" takes us right back to 2002 with its militant snare hits and fat cold bass riff while Southpoint affiliate JFO sharpens up a crucial two-step on "Tell Dem". Finally Filthy Gears gets tasty with a classic horn sample on "Filthy Sax." So on point they're edible, it's time to chow down.

Baka EP (hand-numbered hand-stamped 12" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: WHEELYDEALY 056. Rel: 26 Feb 18
  1. Mr K - "Baka" (4:24)
  2. AxH - "Devil Shogun" (Mr K remix) (4:43)
  3. Mr K - "IP13" (3:46)
  4. Mr K - "Dafuq" (4:39)
Review: Following releases on Duploc and White Peach, Mr K returns to Wheel & Deal with four stark belters. "Baka" sets the tone with an obscene bounce before his remix of fellow W&D next-genner AxH proceeds to punch out of the speakers and melt your face off. Flip for some twisted flute-wizardry and Coki-level filth on "IP13" while "Dafuq" lives up to its name with some delicious reverse dreamy textures, off-grid drums and a bassline that sounds like venom. Sting when you're winning.

  1. Dark Passenger (4:11)
  2. Tippy Toeing (3:32)
  3. Tokoloshe (4:41)
  4. Ride It (feat Saule) (4:21)
Review: LA's Oxossi returns to Deep Dark & Dangerous to build on the ruins of last year's "Cities Of Salt". More looming sub-low structures, laced with melancholy and mean bass textures, each track is a trip: The fog of pipes and waves of oscillations on "Dark Passenger", creepy grimey weirdness on "Tippy Toeing", churchy organs and tripped-out time signatures on "Tokoloshe" and trapped-out warped paranoia on "Ride It". Buckle up, Oxossi isn't messing around here.

Saturn (12")
Cat: ARTKL 029. Rel: 26 Feb 18
  1. Saturn (5:09)
  2. Outback (5:42)
  3. Solaris (5:41)
Review: Following last year's "Raindance" EP, ex-Perverse man Pugilist returns with three more vital dubstep constructs. "Saturn" runs rings around the dance with its 'come in' vocal loop and machine flexed drums while "Outback" deep throats a 23rd century didgeridoo with impeccable bounce attitude. Finally "Solaris" closes the show with the highlight of the EP; a two-steppy space shuffler with a rolling break that's so overwhelmingly insistent it's physical. Benchmark business.

  2. Ricky (feat Ace Boogie) (4:46)
  3. Destroyed (feat Lelijveld) (5:09)
  4. Lemon Cake (4:12)
Review: Three years in the making: Truth & Youngsta's long-awaited Shadow People project is finally upon us and it's worth the wait. A conceptually developed project based in a not-so-far-away dystopia, the sounds are sprung with an intense moody, foreboding aesthetic throughout. Here for the vinyl release we're treated to four of the many highlights; the steppy slithers, eastern vocals and anti-corruption messages of "Ricky", the cavernous deep-fog dubspace of "Awake Before You", the Mezzanine-level barbed soul of "Destroyed" (featuring Truth's longest-standing vocal collaborator Lelijveld) and the brutal deep machine breaths and fog horn feels of "Lemon Cake". And that's not even half the whole album. Time to step into the shadows.

Cat: BLACKLIST 008. Rel: 26 Mar 18
  1. Where Were You (3:43)
  2. Step FWD (4:36)
Review: For the first time in over four years, London bass general V.I.V.E.K delivers his first release on a label other than his own highly collectable System Music dispatches. Landing on the ever innovative Blacklist, the results speak for themselves; "Where Were You" is a sombre, poignant affair. A cosy, barbed soul end-of-night moment seemingly tailored for his own System dances, it's a touching affair to the end. "Step FWD" plays the perfect counterpoint as it rewinds us deeper into the thick of the dance with its pneumatic drums, wobbled-out bass twangs and oceanic dub effects. Classic V.I.V.E.K.
