Mysterious Relief (Ancient Methods remix) (5:19)
Review: Oraculo Records has been quietly making a name for itself as home of synth-focused darkwave and associated genres, plucking choice artists and their oeuvres, often from obscurity, and giving them a platform. The Spanish imprint seems to know few bounds in terms of intensity, and Almax Und Forte's debut is a perfect example of that. A generous six tracks range from the wonderful opener 'Poisoned By Love', which slowly gathers its stepping percussion before introducing beastly bassline and continuing to add drummy workouts until finally throwing in an eerie guitar lick. It's subtle, moody, and a little uneasy. Contrasting this, 'Interrupted' is high tempo weirdo club-goth based around complex percussive patterns, while 'Mysterious Relief' takes dubstep onto a strange factory floor where we find a haunting vocalist at work. You get the point.

Cave Adventure (4:52)
Unicorn Rider (4:04)
Review: There's not a lot of information out there about Arcade of Serpe, so let's skip the back story and cut to the chase. If that's really an appropriate turn of phrase here. Nothing about Cave Adventure feels rushed. Nothing. In fact, it's quite the opposite, opening on dub-wise bass and playful organs, the atmosphere - somewhere between lackadaisical, come down, BBQ, and psychedelic - subtly rises, although not to a crescendo as much as a delicate fade out after a few minutes strutting to the funk-laden groove. Flip it to find more explorations in the sonic ether, with 'Unicorn Rider' smoothly stepping out into a surreal track that uses space and emptiness to accentuate the noises that are there, which mirror, if not directly reflect, the opening title tune. It's quiet, but you won't forget it in a hurry.

Review: When a Yeti is killed by a group of Sherpa, a bunch of university scientists travel out to Nepal in the hope of discovering where the creature came from. There, they team up with a rough and ready tracker, and head out from a remote village into the great white wilderness beyond. Avalanches, prehistoric species, and ancient hominids and alien reptiles all follow as the plot thickens and freezes. If you didn't catch The Primevals when it first arrived on screens, we implore you to watch the 2023 animated sci-fi action romp. Stop motion animator David Allen co-wrote and directed it, spending more than 50 years on the development which sadly completed after he died. It's a family friendly epic that looks gorgeous and plays out compellingly, thanks in no small part to the Richard Bland soundtrack. An homage to the great adventure epics that once defined cinema, the score is classic cinematic stuff, a classical overture of bombastic chase sequences, serene harmonies and pin-drop tension.

Review: Hailing from Yorkshire, Geoff Bastow made music that took people pretty far away from the White Rose county, out to the cosmic discos of Italy and then onwards towards the stratosphere itself. Half a galaxy away from a part of England known for keeping two feet firmly rooted to the ground, calling spades spades and taking no nonsense from nobody. Often producing under the moniker K.I.D. during the 1980s, and making most of his sounds after relocating to Munich, Germany, Bastow's attention to detail, sense of space and spatiality, gauge of groove and understanding of what makes a dancefloor move cannot be understated. Save your words, though, and skip straight to this EP to explain all that to people - six takes on a stone cold classic.

The record paid stunning homage to 1970s library LPs and soundtrack compilations in great depth and detail. Now, the long-awaited sequel, Iniquitous, follows in its footsteps. This one complies two decades' worth of TV music from an alternate reality, all with a great understanding of the era. It has been perfectly sequenced too so that it plays out like a standalone listening experience and it comes on lovely limited edition coloured vinyl.

Review: Roy Budd's soundtrack for Get Carter is an iconic piece of British film music history and this expanded edition celebrates its 50th anniversary in style. Budd's jazzy and groovy score perfectly complements the gritty atmosphere of the film, showcasing his musical genius. The addition of a bonus disc featuring outtakes and dialogue adds depth and nostalgia for fans of the movie. The newly illustrated artwork by Tony Stella pays homage to the film's noir aesthetic, while Charlie Brigden's liner notes provide valuable insights into the creation of the soundtrack. Limited to just 2000 copies, this 180-gram 2LP edition is a must-have for collectors and enthusiasts alike, offering an exciting listening experience that engages you in the world of the movie with each needle drop.

Review: To mark the 50th anniversary of the iconic British gangster film Get Carter (actually released in 1971) which starred Michael Caine and was directed by Mike Hodges, Beatball South Korea presented the soundtrack that propelled jazz musician Roy Budd into film music stardom. This expanded edition draws from the original Japanese and British OST releases but also offers a bonus disc with outtakes and dialogue snippets. Part of Beatball's Roy Budd Classic Soundtrack Scores series, this one offers up Budd's jazzy and groovy signature style which very much defined the essence of the film's scenes along with key dialogue. It's a great nod to Budd's genius as well as a still cool standalone listen.

Review: Candido aka. Luis Schiebeler lays down eight darkwave / Italo numbers for Spain's Oraculo Records as part of their extended EPs series - Megabreakz. The seventh addition to the sonic saga is a hearty, circuit-bent dancefloor haunter, marking the 'inaugural chapter of a two-part epic' by Candido, which promises a journey spanning everything from EBM to new beat to rave breaks. Wherever you place 'Mechanical Dances Part 1' on this vast stylistic continuum, the fact remains that Candido's approach to the post-industrial dance form is as psyche-imprinting as it is floor-denting, often nodding to the profound (sometimes dissociative) experiences common to frequenting such a scene. Peppered throughout - if you know where to find them - are repetitive lyrical mantras, alluding to everything from OOB experiences to controversial French psychoanalysts.

Review: This enigmatic recording, ahead of its time upon release, features Caroline K's pioneering approach to analog synth music and sample experimentation. Tracks like 'The Happening World' demonstrate her focus on dark ambient and drone music, while 'Animal Lattice' offers a haunting juxtaposition of high and low notes, reminiscent of early Dead Can Dance. 'Between The Spaces' explores a range of atmospheres, from new age to dungeon synth, with ethereal undertones. Caroline K's use of background noises and found sounds adds depth and texture to compositions like 'Leaving,' leaving a lasting impression on listeners. Now Wait For Last Year remains a lasting legacy to Caroline K's innovative spirit and her enduring influence on ambient, dark ambient, and electronic music. This brilliant trip into experimental ambience will impress everyone from soundtrack lovers to those who are into darker electronics.

Review: Nick Cave and Warren Ellis's soundtrack for the National Geographic documentary about an imagined 2033 manned mission to Mars feels like a sketch for the atmospheric soundscapes of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' 2016 album Skeleton Tree. Both works inhabit the same dark-hued, super-charged sonic atmosphere. Cave's cinematic music, enriched by Ellis's imaginative contributions, explores a wide range of sounds: distorted guitars in 'Space X,' sibylline keyboard arpeggios in 'Space Station,' and vast synthesized swathes evoking space's void. 'Planetarium' features soulful drones and synthesized strings, creating anticipation and stillness. With few vocals, this ambient soundtrack is perfect for chilling out and daydreaming. It's a departure from the intense emotions of the Bad Seeds, reflecting Cave's inward focus after personal tragedy. Unlike many soundtracks, this one stands apart, integral to Cave and Ellis's collaboration, and can be savored without thinking about Mars. Now available on vinyl for the first time!

Review: Contrary to its ultra-crisp sound - one that suggests it could've been made today - Cetu Javu's Southern Lands was first released on Basic Mix in 1990. Catering to the largely cassette-bound underground of Barcelona at the time, Basic Mix acted as a little-known sublabel through which acts like Javu could express their best and rawest sides. Comprising Javier Revilla and Chris Demere, Cetu Javu had moved to Barcelona from Hanover, Germany - inspired by the works of Kraftwerk, Soft Cell, and Jean-Michel Jarre - and thus produced Southern Lands following a tour shared with fellow acts Wolfsheim and Blind Passengers. The album is shockingly well-made, bespeaking the power of minimal production and conservative vocal processing to achieve a crystal-clear, no less upfront, 'naked' industrial sound.

Review: Javier Revilla Diez, Chris Demere, Stefan Engelke and Torsten Engelke put out an incredible back catalogue as Cetu Java. Active between 1987 ad 1994, they took inspiration from the formative synth-pop years, but rather than replicating, added plenty to the formula that you could say was specific to this outfit. If that were't obvious back then, it's certainly clear to hear listening back today, 30 years after they disbanded and all-but-vanished from the spotlight (after the split, it would be a quarter century before they fave another media interview). Plenty of mythology around the group, then, Where Is Where was, in many ways, their magnum opus. First released in 1992, it not only calls on the group's European roots - with members from Spain, and a base in Germany - it also opens things up stylistically. So, while songs like the title track, 'Time', 'Sometimes' and many more are saturated in a classic synth pop sound, elsewhere the likes of 'Un Dia Normal', 'Dame Tu Mano' and 'Caribbean Dream' opt for something more exotic altogether, without jarring with difference.

Review: Clouzer returns to Distant Gaze for the label's third release with Call of the Abyss, a six-track EP featuring three originals and three remixes by Damon Jee, Zakmina, and Berlin's rising star, Zee Mon. At the EP's core is Clouzer's mesmerising title cut which blends extraterrestrial echoes and broken beats as it delves into uncharted depths. The haunting vocals of Valentin Henning drive the EP's second track and envelop listeners in blurred, delayed textures. 'Perpetual' pulses with rave energy, merging cosmic elements and dark disco basslines, while Zee Mon infuses it with darkwave vigour, Damon Jee delivers full-throttle dark disco in 'Stalactites,' and Zakmina crafts a sublime broken beat trip.

Review: Concepcion Huerta's debut solo album, The Earth Has Memory, marks a significant milestone for the accomplished Mexican artist. Known for manipulating everyday objects and electronic instruments using tape, Huerta crafts a dense, atmospheric blend of dark ambient and noise music. Recorded at Elektronmusikstudion in Stockholm, and refined during a seminar at UNAM with Olivia Block, the album employs Buchla and Nord instruments processed through magnetic tape which imbues the compositions with a tactile, organic quality. Huerta's narrative-driven approach delves into a descent to Earth's core, evoking abstract resonances and geological movements that are all complemented by Magaly Ugarte's vivid photography from a transformative visit to a Hidalgo obsidian mine

The Blue Hour (part 2) (12:24)
Review: Loren Connors and Alan Licht's performance on The Blue Hour is a rare and stunning exploration of sound and emotion. Celebrating thirty years of collaboration, the duo's first-ever set with Connors on piano is captured in this live recordings from May 5-6, 2023. The album surprises with its spacious warmth, showcasing the duo's dedicated expressionism and vast spectrum of emotion. The opening notes shimmer, leading into a stunning exchange of melodies and chords. As Connors transitions to guitar, the music deepens, creating sharp, glassy edges and a dramatic, organ-like feedback. The duo's chemistry is palpable as they lock into refrains, creating a melodic and harmonious sound reminiscent of their early days. Licht's ability to delicately place fractures of a Jackson C Frank song among Connors' blues is remarkable.

Review: The Long Shadow Falls collects the 41 unknown and redreamt mixes that Current 93 created for two (long-ago sold-out) lathe-cut 12" releases, respectively titled 'The Long Shadow Falls' and 'Why Can't We All Just Walk Away?'. Whereas the original lathe pressings are lost to time, this reissue thankfully revives this curiously lengthy record. The former suite is riven across a whopping 39 twelve-or-so-minute ambient/post-rock cuts, while 'Why Can't We All Just Walk Away' comes as a single fourteen minute opus, and is backed by a short untitled tune. Yes, this is the same song repeated 41 times over, with subtle differences in the mix between them. Evincing the musical cunning of a Himalayan cat, these are just the sorts of antics we've come to expect from Tibet and co.

Review: Kolony Gorky is back with a third EP in less than a year that once again offers some stylish and artful rhythmic interpretations. DDrhode & Sohrab are behind this one and it opens with the airy percussive pattern and suspensory loops of deep and deft jam 'Ghoroob' (Kryptic Rhythm) which becomes dusty downbeat and late-night jaunt when served up as the 'Haleeteh?' version. 'Azadi' has the feel of a sixties spy thriller with its mysterious leads and 'Distant Sun' shuts down with some zoned out and loved-up deep house romance. Another hard-to-define but easy-to-love EP from the already vital Kolony Gorky.

Here the label presents a mixtape-style collection featuring live recordings from London's Notting Hill Carnival, spanning 1984 to 1988. The audio, meticulously curated by the Who Cork The Dance crew, features contributions from Jayman, Ruff House, Keimo, Omar, Gee Wizz and Jah Humble.

Cat: DEATH 032LP. Rel: 04 Jul 24
Track 1 (27:22)
Track 2 (28:37)
Review: All Bad Boy & All Good Girl is a fascinating mixtape, first released in 2022, documenting the few and rare radio broadcasts that propagated a now-elusive, but decade-long, Mancunian form of street soul. Lasting from at least the mid-1980s to the mid 1990s, this exciting ream of 'extracts', here on the vinyl version coming as a playlist of nine, transports us right back to this scratchy, no-holds-barred chuggers' sound. Featuring DIY cassette recordings of bands such as Broadway, Stereo Dan and Soul Control playing live at dances and blues parties in south & central Manchester from 1988 through to 1996, Death Is Not The End do a stellar job as ever of compiling the most exquisite forgotten tracks in the style, as though they'd been beamed into the present through a trans-temporal airwave. Packed with the radio phase distortion, hiss, vocal and SFX interjections, dub sirens and delay-outs, this is much more than just a functional soulful soundclash.

Review: Depeche Mode's 1983 concert at the iconic London venue - now the Apollo - boasts a stunning set list that feels like a complete impression of a band that have helped defined pop, and specifically UK pop, for the best part of half a century. It's almost as good as seeing them live, at a London spot that speaks to a less polished period in cultural history we really shouldn't take for granted.

Review: .It's pretty much impossible not to fall in love with Desire, no matter where you arrive in their discography. Formed by Johnny 'Chromatics and Glass Candy' Jewel and vocalist Megan Louise, and formerly synth-drum maestro Nat Walker, the group debuted on Jewel's now-legendary Italians Do It Better in 2009, and their first record, II was heralded as one of the decade's finest. More than ten years later, Escape reflected how things had developed during the years betwixt. Still saturated in a kind of borrowed nostalgia, yet focused firmly on crafting innovative arrangements, few outfits can simultaneously sound so polished and yet born to play in the reddish glows of darkened rooms in grimy DIY spaces. As unique today as the record was when it landed, and the outfit were when they initially emerged.
