Review: Hungarian producer and keyboardist Szabolcs Bognar, known as Abase, explores cosmic unity through his music, now based in Berlin at the forefront of the city's burgeoning jazz scene. His latest album, Awakening, released by Analogue Foundation and Oshu Records, reflects a period of personal milestones and introspection. Recorded swiftly at Berlin's Brewery Studios, it blends influences from Afrobeat, Hungarian folk, Yoruba rhythms, and more, infused with Coltrane-esque improvisation. Tracks like 'Destruction Everywhere' and 'Menidaso' merge spiritual jazz with Afrobeat, featuring vocalist Eric Owusu. 'Awakening' marks a profound musical journey, emphasising unity, dialogue, and self-reflection in a transcendent listening experience.

Review: Cannonball Adderley's Somethin' Else is a masterpiece that features the peak of his lyrical invention and the superb interplay between him, Miles Davis, and the rest of the ensemble. Originally released in 1958, this album exemplifies the essence of hard bop with its gorgeous blues lines and taut, focused groove. The title track and 'One for Daddy-O' highlight the exquisite craftsmanship of both horn players, while the rhythm section, featuring Hank Jones, Sam Jones, and Art Blakey, provides a solid foundation for their improvisations. Adderley's alto saxophone shines, particularly on 'Dancing in the Dark,' where his romantic improvisation evokes the spirit of Charlie Parker and Johnny Hodges. What sets Somethin' Else apart is its clarity and directness. Each note and phrase is carefully considered, contributing to the overall narrative of the music. Davis, known for his minimalist approach, outlines the themes with precision, allowing for a common understanding to emerge among the musicians. Somethin' Else is a timeless record that continues to inspire listeners with its beauty and depth.

Salty Road Dogs Victory Anthem (4:46)
Review: 'Salty Road Dogs Victory Anthem' by Alabaster DePlume, composed live during a Vienna soundcheck and later recorded in London, emerges as a brilliant show to the resilience and creativity of the group. This track was birthed amidst the intense schedule of a demanding tour following the success of DePlume's album Gold. The piece opens with a robust, swirling saxophone, leading into a triumphant four-minute crescendo. DePlume is joined by a dynamic ensemble, featuring Rozi Plain on bass, Momoko Gill on drums, and Conrad Singh on guitar. Together, they craft a rousing homage to the sheer act of living, celebrating the victory of existence. This anthem resonates with a profound message of self-permission and triumph, regardless of external recognition. The music, much like his sentiment, is bold and unapologetic, encouraging listeners to embrace their victories, no matter how small.

Review: Ana Frango Eletrico's Little Electric Chicken Heart is a petit cult classic masterpiece that has entranced listeners with its authentically vintage fusion of chamber pop, rock, samba, and jazz. Originally released in Brazil and Japan, the album has become a sought-after collector's item, earning accolades from fans and critics alike. Highlighted by The Needle Drop as one of the Top 50 Albums of 2019, Ana's unique blend of influences shines throughout the nine tracks. From the spellbinding piano solo of 'Saudade' to the anthemic singalong of 'Chocolate,' each song shows Ana's versatility and creativity. The album also features collaborations with notable artists, adding depth and richness to the musical tapestry. With its swirling melodies, lush instrumentation, and deft vocal delivery, Little Electric Chicken Heart is a journey through the vibrant landscape of contemporary Brazilian music.

Review: Ana Frango Eletrico's first ever reissue, Little Electric Chicken Heart, follows up 2023's most recent record Me Chama De Gato Que Eu Sou Sua. Surfacing after Mr. Bongo were met with a string of requests to reissue the album not long after its original release in 2019, we're once more compelled to consider the album's merits and what makes the enjoyment of it tick. More of an establishment of style and talent than an exploration of a concept, the album is noted for its fusion of chamber pop, rock and samba, across a vintage palette that defies any overarching categorisation.

Unicorn Rider (4:04)
Review: There's not a lot of information out there about Arcade of Serpe, so let's skip the back story and cut to the chase. If that's really an appropriate turn of phrase here. Nothing about Cave Adventure feels rushed. Nothing. In fact, it's quite the opposite, opening on dub-wise bass and playful organs, the atmosphere - somewhere between lackadaisical, come down, BBQ, and psychedelic - subtly rises, although not to a crescendo as much as a delicate fade out after a few minutes strutting to the funk-laden groove. Flip it to find more explorations in the sonic ether, with 'Unicorn Rider' smoothly stepping out into a surreal track that uses space and emptiness to accentuate the noises that are there, which mirror, if not directly reflect, the opening title tune. It's quiet, but you won't forget it in a hurry.

Review: Verve Records is set to release Louis in London, the final major performance by the legendary Louis Armstrong. Recorded live at the BBC just weeks after Armstrong topped the UK charts with 'What A Wonderful World,' this 13-track collection is made available on coloured vinyl, capturing Armstrong's vibrant energy as he performs with The All Stars on July 2, 1968. The collection spans his career, featuring everything from W.C. Handy's 'Ole Miss'' to hits like 'Mack the Knife' and 'Hello, Dolly!' This session, broadcast on September 22, 1968, on BBC TV's Show Of The Week - Louis Armstrong, was Armstrong's last significant performance. Armstrong cherished this recording, sharing it with friends and visitors, and now, more than five decades later, it's finally being released officially. With extensive liner notes by Ricky Riccardi, Armstrong's biographer, this album continues Armstrong's legacy of spreading joy and reminding us of the enduring beauty of his music.

Review: Verve Records presents Louis In London, the last great performance by one of the most influential jazz musicians of all time, Louis Armstrong. Recorded live at the BBC in July 2, 1968 - weeks after the artist broke the charts with 'What A Wonderful World', which has persisted in the popular sphere most notably due to its infamous inclusion in the Toy Story repertoire - this 13-track performance also hears stellar renditions of strong-armed Armstrong greats such as 'Hello, Dolly!', all performed with his renowned band The All-Stars.

Review: Rewind to 1975, Brazilian supergroup Azymuth hit their richest creative vein with this self-titled full-length. Just as the band remain so themselves, this is still hugely relevant and ridiculously on-point considering it's 40 years on the clock. Proof can be found on every track from the sedative harmonic charms of the opener "Linha Do Horizonte", the raw slap bass funk, velvet keys and soaring synths on "Seems Like This" and the frenetic, almost techy mentality of "Wait For My Turn". An essential addition to any collection, this would have blown minds to pieces back in 1975.

Review: There'll Never Be Another You, recorded live in Zagreb, Croatia, in 1985, features Chet Baker on trumpet, piano, and vocals, accompanied by guitarist Philip Catherine. This album captures the essence of Baker's intimate, melancholic style, showcasing his talent across four duos. The duo's chemistry shines through on tracks like 'Beatrice,' 'Leaving,' and the title track, 'There'll Never Be Another You.' Catherine's guitar complements Baker's performance beautifully, adding depth and texture to the music. Now available on vinyl for the first time!

Review: Sandro Brugnolini's Overground stands as a rare gem in library music and is also generally regarded as some of this artist's best work alongside his formidable Underground from 1970. Originally released on Sincro Edizioni Musicali, it served as the soundtrack to Enrico Moscatelli and Mario Rigoni's documentary Persuasione having been commissioned by Ente Provinciale Per Il Turismo Di Trento. Featuring top Italian musicians like Angelo Baroncini, Silvano Chimento, Giorgio Carnini, Enzo Restuccia, and Giovanni Tommaso, the album traverses from underground psychedelic prog rock with swirling organs and fuzzy guitars to sophisticated lounge grooves with avant-garde orchestrations. Now remastered from the original tapes, it is one to add to the racks tout suite.

Review: Roy Budd's soundtrack for Get Carter is an iconic piece of British film music history and this expanded edition celebrates its 50th anniversary in style. Budd's jazzy and groovy score perfectly complements the gritty atmosphere of the film, showcasing his musical genius. The addition of a bonus disc featuring outtakes and dialogue adds depth and nostalgia for fans of the movie. The newly illustrated artwork by Tony Stella pays homage to the film's noir aesthetic, while Charlie Brigden's liner notes provide valuable insights into the creation of the soundtrack. Limited to just 2000 copies, this 180-gram 2LP edition is a must-have for collectors and enthusiasts alike, offering an exciting listening experience that engages you in the world of the movie with each needle drop.

Review: To mark the 50th anniversary of the iconic British gangster film Get Carter (actually released in 1971) which starred Michael Caine and was directed by Mike Hodges, Beatball South Korea presented the soundtrack that propelled jazz musician Roy Budd into film music stardom. This expanded edition draws from the original Japanese and British OST releases but also offers a bonus disc with outtakes and dialogue snippets. Part of Beatball's Roy Budd Classic Soundtrack Scores series, this one offers up Budd's jazzy and groovy signature style which very much defined the essence of the film's scenes along with key dialogue. It's a great nod to Budd's genius as well as a still cool standalone listen.

Review: Recorded in 1956 for producer Tom Wilson's Transition Records, Byrd Blows on Beacon Hill presents trumpeter Donald Byrd in a relaxed quartet setting. Joined by Doug Watkins on bass, Boston-area musicians Ray Santisi on piano and Jim Zitano on drums, Byrd delivers a standards-heavy set recorded on a rainy spring afternoon in the Beacon Hill home of engineer Steve Fassett. This casual atmosphere contributes to the album's easygoing charm and intimate feel. Highlights include Byrd's lyrical rendition of Joe Sullivan's 'Little Rock Getaway' and beautiful interpretations of 'Polka Dots and Moonbeams,' 'If I Love Again,' and 'Stella by Starlight.' The trumpeter steps back on tracks like 'People Will Say We're in Love' and 'What's New,' allowing the trio to really shine.

Review: Citrus Sun - the eight-piece soul-jazz outfit helmed up by guitarist, bandleader and all-round personality Jean-Paul Maunick aka. Bluey - deliver their fourth album for Dome, the delightfully named Anaconga: a thoroughgoing homage to jazz and soul greats from back in the day. Made up of both covers and originals, the album opens with the gorgeous Maynard Ferguson tune 'Mister Mellow', with backing vocals from Tony Momrelle and Deborah Bond. Bluey and Richard Bull share production duties throughout; there's also 'Down For The Third Time', a deliciously funky remake of a classic Bobby Caldwell groove from 1978, with Natalie Duncan on vocals and Dominic Glover and Charlie Allen tearing it up on trumpet and guitar respectively; and 'Mystic Brew', originally written and recorded by keyboard legend Ronnie Foster, the inclsuion of which is a "thank you for his massive contribution to the music we love and are inspired by".

Review: Ole Coltrane was the last album John Coltrane recorded under his own direction for Atlantic Records. It showcases several musicians who worked with him on the earlier Africa/Brass session, just two days prior. Widely regarded as a pinnacle of avant-garde jazz, the album marks a significant shift for Coltrane from accessibility to daring complexity. This album therefore also stands as a pivotal moment in his artistic evolution and one that signalled his exploration of more innovative and challenging musical territories. It now gets reissued on crystal clear vinyl.

Review: Donald Byrd's 'Wind Parade' on Side-1 is hot track in jazz-funk, starting with a deep bassline and a catchy piano lick that evolves into a smooth, sexy jam. The track's lush arrangement and Byrd's trumpet work create an irresistible groove, making it clear why it's a sought-after classic. On Side-2, Billy Brooks' 'Fourty Days' delivers infectious brass-driven jazz-funk. The hot horn section lays down a powerful, smooth funk groove that feels cinematic in scope. The track's rhythm and melody are immediately engaging, with a timeless quality that explains its sampling by Tribe Called Quest. This 7" is smoking 1-2 punch!

Review: On The Key, New York drummer and all-round prolific sound generator Chris Corsano offers an acute glimpse into his live performance style. Aside from this evidently idiosyncratic solo approach - on full display here - Corsano also sought another level on The Key, plucking away at the many possibilities of a self-made string drum. The result is a free-improvised extravaganza, elseways one that hardly *sounds* improvised (yet we know it is), perhaps by sheer virtue of its progressive grandeur and singular sense. The mood is whimsical verging on capricious, with confounding titles like 'Unlike An Empty Box' and 'I Don't Have Missions' hinting at a postmodern jest baked into both the artist's personality and musical style, but the music is otherwise towering, cohesive, Babylonian; pree, for example, the flow-static climax that gives rise to suspended guitar solo on 'The Full-Measure Wash Down'.

Review: Recorded live at Basin Street in New York during 1954 and '55, this album highlights the tight interplay and smooth melodies that were hallmarks of Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond's early work. Featuring Bob Bates and Joe Dodge, the quartet excels in delivering fluid counterpoints and silky solos, as showcased in 'Love Walked In.' The "red hot" in the title of Jazz: Red Hot and Cool alludes to its vibrant cover featuring a model in striking red attire. The "cool" pertains to the music itself. This reissue presents two previously unreleased tracks, 'Taking a Chance on Love' and 'Closing Time Blues,' both offering lively, energetic performances. Brubeck's solos soar on the former, while the latter delivers a delightful bounce with its piano, wire brushes, and walking bass lines. The album's excellent sound quality captures the intimate, live atmosphere of the performances, making it essential for jazz lovers. Standout tracks include 'The Duke,' a straightforward blues number, and 'Indiana,' where Desmond's solo traverses complex rhythmic patterns with ease. Documenting the quartet's progress before significant lineup changes in 1956 and 1958, this vinyl reissue revives a golden era of jazz, celebrating the innovative live performances that defined the Brubeck quartet.
