Me Guesta Boogalo
Cat: HR7 S 160. Rel: 20 Nov 20
  1. Me Guesta Boogaloo (3:10)
  2. Pastime Paradise (4:13)
Review: It's all about the cover version of Stevie Wonders anthem on the flip from this Japanese based latin centric outfit. Killer !Alien Liberty International may not be that well known this side of the World, but the expansive Latin combo have been releasing sizzling music -mostly on CD, for some reason - in their native Japan for the last couple of years. Here they make their long-awaited vinyl debut with a sizzling slab of authentic 1960s Harlem boogaloo full of infectious rhythms, rousing horns and vocals that may inspire sing-alongs if dropped at the right time. Equally as impressive is their flipside instrumental cover of Stevie Wonder classic 'Pastime Paradise', which brilliantly re-imagines the song as Latin jazz-funk gem complete with flanged guitars, a rousing horn section, a brilliant percussion-only breakdown and duelling flute and sax solos, both of which do a great job replicating the original's vocal melody.

Baara (reissue)
Cat: 557119-1. Rel: 21 Oct 20
  1. Baara
  2. Ja Pense A Toi
Review: Amadou et Mariam is a Malian duo made up of Mariam Doumbia (vocals) and Amadou Bagayoko (guitar and vocals). They are a couple and both are blind musicians who met at Mali's Institute for the Young Blind. They came together through a shared love of music and have put out no fewer than 15 albums. 'Baara' from 2009 on Sacred Rhythm proved one of their biggest hits and now fetches high sums on Discogs. This reissue is a welcome one featuring the title track - a joyous mix of live afro drumming, vocal chants and freewheeling melodies, and the touching 'Ja Pense A Toi,' with its pained male leads, desert blues and aching guitar solos. Lovely stuff.

  1. As Curvas Da Estrada De Santos (5:50)
  2. Ze E Parana (4:09)
Review: Far Out Recordings have singled-handedly made 70s fusionists Azymuth one of the most acclaimed bands of the modern era, with high profile headlines sets at cult festivals around Europe and an endless stream of quick to sell out records. Now they shine more light on the virtuosos instrumentalists with this 7" featuring two more home-recorded demo tracks. Jazz, funk, psched out sounds and rich Moog bass make these some for heir more mind expanding cuts. The a-side is actually a take on an iconic pop song from the 60s by Jovem Guarda, and the reverse is a weird space oddity for hardcore cosmic adventurers.

  2. No Nos Pararan (3:45)
  3. Ain't No Stopping Us Now (3:03)
Review: Second time around for Banda Achilifunk and Original Jazz Orquestra's sought-after 2011 cover of disco classic "I Believe in Miracles", original copies of which now change hands for serious sums online. The expansive Spanish crew's baggy, sun-kissed and rumba-soaked Latin disco cover of the Jackson Sisters' classic is perfectly pitched, adding layers of crunchy Clavinets and punchy horns to a sumptuously summery groove. Over on the flip we get two different takes on McFadden & Whitehead classic "Ain't No Stopping Us Now": a decidedly Balearic Spanish language cover ("No Nos Pararas"), and an instrumental cover full to bursting with superb grooves and even more scintillating horn solos.

Curumin Chama Cunhata Que Eu Vou Contar (Todo Dia Era Dia De Indio)
  1. Curumin Chama Cunhata Que Eu Vou Contar (Todo Dia Era Dia De Indio) (3:23)
  2. Rio Babilonia (4:30)
Review: Astonishingly, this is the 80th instalment in Mr Bongo's brilliant Brazil 45s series. Predictably, this edition is every bit as essential as its predecessors. It boasts two superb 1980s recordings by one of the true legends of Brazilian 20th century music, Jorge Ben. On the A-side you'll find the lengthily titled 'Curmin Chama Cunhata Que Eu Vou Contar (Todo Dia Erza Dia De Indio), a synth-splashed samba-funk tribute to the indigenous tribes of Brazil that was first featured on Ben's 1981 album Bem-Vinda Amizade. Turn to the flip for 'Rio Babilonia', a killer Brazilian boogie joint rich in squelchy synth bass, heady Latin percussion and fiery horn arrangements courtesy of the late, great Lincoln Olivetti.

  6. Kimbe (4:10)
Review: Dou Van Jou is one of, thankfully, an endless list of rare and mysterious records that needs to be heard. The Guadeloupean-Parisian artist and cultural activist behind it, Jimmy Blanche, combines heritage and futurism across its six tracks of jazz piano, afro drums and disco chords, too of which are the most spiritual singles off the full length itself. It's quite the weird and wonderful melange of sounds and some of the cuts even reached cult status at the time of release in 1987. World music maestro and Rush Hour founder Antal has been known to drop some of these before now, which proves they work as well at home as they do on a modern dancefloor.

Cat: FNR 142. Rel: 19 Oct 20
  1. Afro Cookie (Slofat version) (4:26)
  2. Psych Afrofunk (1:56)
Review: Funk Night Records continues to offer up new slabs of fabulously fuzzy funk from The Blassics, a nine-piece outfit from Finland that has been operative for the best part of a decade. Remarkably, this is the band's fifth single this year. On the A-side you'll find the "Slofat Version" of their tribute to the polyrhythmic percussion, raw bass and dancing horns of Afro-funk, which is aptly named 'Afro Cookie'. It's a chunky musical biscuit that looks set to energise dancefloors with its sugary delights every time it's dropped. Despite its title, flipside 'Psych Afro Funk' is not that psychedelic; it is, though a rather fine and pleasingly laidback ramble through the more relaxed end of the Afro-funk spectrum.

Review: The Blassics is a multi-member collective known for the excellent blend of jazz, funk, afro and soul across a series of standout records over the last decade. They take care of the a-side of this red hot release from Funk Night with 'Flowman Break', a bubbling, loose limbed funk bumper that is full flavour and full of playful funk. Tatasomba's 'Kaleidoscope' is a little more paired back and coy, with a conversational bassline and jangling cow bells that keep you on the move.

Review: Munich's Jazz & Milk label has now been releasing music for 15 years. As a result, founder Dusty is in a celebratory mood and has decided to offer-up this compilation style EP of previously unreleased treats from label artists old and new. Fusing organic and electronic instrumentation while fusing a myriad of interconnected styles, the EP's six tracks offer an excellent snapshot of the label's distinctive sound. Our picks include the sun-kissed Afro-South American fusion of Bongani Give Thanks' 'Indoda (African Reprise)', the bruk-up soul of Moe Fabrik's brilliant 'Sassy Boy', the intergalactic future soul shuffle of Steve Spacek's superb 'Do You Want My Love' and the sub-heavy Latin house percussion-fest that is Abase's excellent closing cut, 'Fallen Statues'.

Review: Chicco's 'I Need Some Money' is a real classic amongst the contemporary wave of deep crate diggers and world music lovers. It has been played far and wide by an array of DJs with different backgrounds, and that speaks to the record's global and universal appeal. It has proto-house beats and disco chords with a fantastic vocal that is easy to sing along to. On the flip, 'We Can Dance' slows things down to a dubbed out cosmic crawl with some fantastic squelchy synth work and a young sodding choir of vocals all lighting up the party.

Once again finding new ways to collide hard rock and West African funk, first up is 'Come Inside', which has been a firm favourite in his live shows and is a collaboration with bassist JP Maramba that's full of fierce energy. 3. The Obeah Man Rhythm (3:23)
Review: On this surprise 7" edition of Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell's unofficial Edits & Overdubs series of releases, the long-serving New York producer turns his attention to Exuma's 'The Obeah Man', a heavily percussive, Afro-fired slab of rhythm and blues/folk-rock fusion that was once an anthem at David Mancuso's Loft parties. Claussell's 'Part One' rework somehow seems even more urgent, percussive and life-affirming than Exuma's original version, and the 'Part 2' version - an unashamedly sweaty, drum-heavy interpretation - most certainly is. Possibly best of all - for plays in house sets, at least - is the 'Obeah Man Rhythm' version, which is a loopy, percussive beast. You may need to go for a little lie down after playing it - we did!

  2. Lololi-Lomko (Renegades Of Jazz edit) (4:36)
Review: Over the last couple of years, Matasuna Records has developed a tried-and-tested formula. It revolves around finding and licensing killer cuts - think funk, Afrobeat, tropical flavours and Latin beats - and then pairing them with a fresh, floor-friendly re-edit. Their latest find is something of an overlooked gem: a gorgeously sunny 1983 number from Ghanaian musician Mawuli Decker that's piled high with infectious, EWE-language vocals, Highlife guitars, spacey Moog sounds and cute electric piano solos. The accompanying Renegades of Jazz re-edit is pleasingly faithful to its source material, deftly showcasing Decker's brilliant music while beefing up the bass, subtly tightening up the drums and layering on some complimentary hand percussion.

Side A is DJ Suro a re-work of Patti Drew's 1968 version of 'Hard to Handle' that has big brass sounds, low slung bass and a fine soul vocal scoring to real heights. Mysterious newcomer producer Demi Riquisimo takes care of the opener with a remix of Elia y Elizabeth's signature hit 'Alegria' that is brilliantly tropical and new age. Parisian Yuksek then also works the same tune into a lush mid tempo disco stomper. Reverse the 12" and you'll find Bostonian-come-Colombian BOSQ flipping 'Soy Una Nube' init a soul enriched banger and Baranquilla natives Vagabundo Club Socia close things out with some up tempo funk and precise drum work. Here one of their cuts get reworked by shamanistic rhythm innovator Azu Tiwaline. 'Sound Measures (part VI-X)' is a n epic excursion into feathery drumming and jumbled percussion that is like tuning into the sound of the jungle itself. Review: The cursed global pandemic may have put paid to this year's Tropical Pressure festival in Cornwall, but thanks to this first compilation style EP from its' new offshoot label, we can now recreate the event's humid, colourful musical vibe in our own homes. The selections are naturally top-drawer, with the heavy tropical Afro-funk of Guy One's EP-opening 'Bangarre Tomme' brilliantly setting the tone. Faith Mussa impresses with the deliciously positive and sun-kissed 'Ngoma' - all rubbery bass, JuJu style guitars and bouncy beats - while Guided Souls get hot and heavy on the raw and fuzzy Afro-house of 'Freedoms Light'. We'd also recommend checking out the 'No Nations Dub' of 'Kameno' by No Nations Orchestra, a sun-bright slab of audio sunshine rich in glistening guitars and punchy horns.

Review: Founded in 1967 by singer/producer Carlos Oliva and other Cuban immigrants to the United States, Los Sobrinos del Juez were briefly one of the leading protagonists of the turn-of-the-'70s "Miami Sound" - a humid and intoxicating fusion of blues, rock, funk and dancefloor-focused Latin sounds. Their 1974 debut single "Harina De Maiz" - here reissued for the first time since - is a perfect example of that short lived style, offering up a mixture of wah-wah-guitar and psychedelic organ-powered Latin funk grooves and righteous Cuban vocals. On this edition it comes backed by the previously unheard "Corned Beef Hash", a swinging Latin-jazz number rich in vibraphone solos, jaunty piano riffs and plenty of hip-wiggling percussion.

On this second installment of spiritually charged, low tempo club killers, you get the chants and percussion of "Riddim Of Inari", tightly looped West African funk of "Mi C'Yaan" and the stunningly evocative "When Will You Come Down?". There's more rolling rhythmic business to be enjoyed on "Picayune" while "Cricket (part II)" amps up the distortion without losing the groove, and then "Ancient Nomads" seals off this volume in style with a slow, hard-slapping beat to get fully entranced too.

This third round of tripped-out dancefloor delights draws on a global panoply of sounds once again, starting in a mystical mood with "Kongo Bina" before firing up the party stove with "Roots & Culture" and slapping down a heavyweight chug on the fierce n' slow "Flatline". Review: Cheery Japanese fusionists Onegram have a new album on the way - their first in four years - so to get us in the mood they've offered up this double A-side "45" on Flower Records. Lead-cut "Diggin" is typical of their joyous, sun-baked style. It's a fine fusion of reggae and seventies soul, rich in jaunty horn lines and super-sweet grooves, topped off by a bi-lingual vocal paying tribute to the twin attractions of record digging and dancing. Turn the record over and you'll find something equally as inspired: a dubby Afro-Balearic cover of Brian Briggs' synth-powered 1980s classic 'AEO'. It's vastly different to Briggs original, but in the best possible way. A breezy, unashamedly Balearic gem.

Prince Alfonso & The Fever kick off with fat-bottomed swagger and earthy dub funk grooves, and Nestor Alvarez flip the script with more Latin percussion and bossa-style grooves. Brentford Rd Soul Rebels take you to a hot summer's day with their reggae soundtrack, and last of all Curtis Baker & The Bravehearts lead with a big sax line and hip swinging tambourines that all come underpinned by big bass. Varied and vital, it's a small bit of wax but it packs a big punch.

  3. You No Fit Touch Am (Medlar remix) (9:35)
Review: Here's something a little unexpected: a collaborative EP from British Afrobeat/Afro-soul hero Dele Sosimi and renowned deep house and disco fusionist Medlar. The latter's influence is clear on superb opener 'Full Moon', where Sosimi's keys and sweet, soulful vice rise above a deliciously sparse backing track full of lo-fi, sideman-style drums (think Teddy Pendergass's 'Why Can't We Live Together'), lazy guitar solos and squiggly synth-sounds. It can also be heard on 'Gudu Gudu Khan', a William Onyeabor-esque chunk of Afro-synth brilliance topped off by brilliant vocals by Sosimi. To round the EP off, Medlar provides his interpretation of earlier Sosimi single, 'You No Fit Touch Am', offering up a club-ready take that sits somewhere between housed-up Afrobeat and synth-sporting Afro-disco.

Alien Felines From Beyond The Galaxy
  1. Alien Felines From Beyond The Galaxy (5:54)
  2. Ekows (6:52)
Review: Afro-funk combo Supergombo previously impressed with a pair of sweltering albums, but it's been three years since their last essential audio missive. This return to action is therefore more than welcome. They're in fine form too, with brilliantly named A-side 'Alien Felines From Beyond The Galaxy' offering an excitable and smile-inducing fusion of spacey, far-sighted Moog synthesizer solos and the Lyon-based band's usual horn-fired, Afrobeat-inspired grooves. Flipside 'Flows' draws on Ghanaian Highlife influences as well as Fela Kuti and Tony Allen, with glistening Ebo Taylor style guitars, snaking sax solos and fiery horn motifs rising above another insatiably infectious groove. It's good to have them back!

I'm In Love

  1. I'm In Love (Yoshioka Dynamite Japan Gimmick edit) (4:55)
  2. Appeal To You (Yoshioka Dynamite Japan 7" version) (4:08)
Review: Aru Takamura wanted to be a singer from her early teenage years and she soon made it happen. She had a few albums out and many EPs in the 80s and always brought a unique sound to soul. She later settled on singing in her native Japanese tongue but on the lead single here 'I'm In Love' she also dropped in a bit of English, specifically on the big chorus. The tune is a vibrant disco banger here touched up by Yoshioka Dynamite, who also tackles the more downbeat and sentimental 'Appeal To You' with its harmonica melodies and bubbling synth bass.

  6. Boogie Da Paz (6:07)
Review: Selva Discos broadens its horizons with the next release that celebrates the start of a new series focusing on showcasing the music of contemporary Brazilian artists. First up is Pedro Zopelar, known not only for his work with the anarchic-techno-punk act Teto Preto, but also for the project My Girlfriend and his solo LP - both on Funkineven's Apron Records. Novaterra Vol 1 features the hi-tech jazz of 'Livre', the off-kilter funk of 'Dias Tensos' is wonderfully disorienting, while the UK broken beat influence of Bugz In The Attic or Atjazz are clearly evident on tracks like 'Modo Aviao' or the bittersweet 'Boogie Da Paz'.
