Review: When it comes to blending contemporary dancefloor sounds with aspects of vintage funk, soul and Afro-Latin music, there are few more adept producers than former Whiskey Barons man BOSQ. He's at it again here on his first 12" of 2020. Afro-funk star Kaleta provides vocals on both A-side tracks, the Afrobeat-influenced disco-funk cheeriness of "Wake Up" (an infectious chunk of sun-soaked goodness) and the Afro-Cuban percussive shuffle of horn-heavy delight "Omo Iya". Elsewhere, Justo Valdez and Evan Laflamme guest on the Afro-Latin breeziness of "Mambue" (all dancing woodwind, Fela sax and layered drums), while "El Carriqi" sees BOSQ add Tito Puente style percussion and tight Fela Kuti style sax blasts to a club-ready Afro-house groove.

Review: Eagle eyed diggers might have spotted Camarao Orkestra's excellent Nacao Africa 12" single dropping last year on Favorite Recordings. Now the promise of that single has been followed up with this wonderful album - a scintillating blend of Latin jazz, funk, samba, Afrobeat and much more besides. The playing is second to none, not least the gorgeous Rhodes on "Dia De Verao", and the energy pivots nimbly across these seven tracks to make for a varied but cohesive listen. Uptempo "Guerreiro Yoruba" is an infectious stomper, while "Copacabana" captures a cool 70s funk vibe that wouldn't sound out of place on a Rufus & Chaka Khan record. With the title track bringing the perfect laid back party flavour too, there's a lot to savour on this album, not least while the sun is shining.

Review: It would be fair to say that "Camaleon" - Spanish for "chameleon", fact fans - is a fitting title for the debut album by Carlos "Caribombo" Guillen. Born to Colombian and Venezuelan parents, but now living in France, the percussionist/DJ/producer makes music that not only draws on his South American roots, but also his love of contemporary music from all four corners of the globe, be it the tropical sounds of Mauritius, Afro-house, Portuguese kuduro, Jamaican dub or British bass music. As a result, the Venezuelan's debut album a tropical, multi-coloured treat that's joyfully hard to describe. Don't take our word for it: give it a listen ASAP!

  1. Celia Cruz Y La Sonora Matancera - "Mi Bomba Sono" (2:37)

Review: In a bid to celebrate the widespread influence of Afro-Cuban music - and in particular the work of one of Cuba's most storied songwriters, Silvestre Mendez - the Rocafort Records crew has decided to dig into the archives and offer up two stone cold classics from the golden age of Cuban music. On side A you'll find Celia Cruz and La Sonora Matancera's 1963 version of "Mi Bomba Sono", an infectious dancefloor number in which Cruz's fantastic vocals rise above a Tito Puente style rhythm, squealing horns and cheeky pianos. Over on the flip you'll find the killer salsa vibes of Joey Pastrana and his Latin orchestra's superb version of "A Bailar Oriza". Even more percussive than the A-side, it's absolutely essential.

  1. Drums & Steel Song (4:58)
  2. Sunshine Steel (4:48)
Review: The Kalakutasoul label launches with something rather special: a must-have"45" featuring two of the standout tracks from Montego Bay outfit the Golden Sunshine Steel Drum Band's self-titled 1980 reggae-calypso fusion album, a set which now changes hands for vast sums online. A-side "Drum & Steel Song" is superb, with the band layering hand percussion and ear-catching steel pan melodies atop a sturdy, dub-wise reggae groove. Flip-side "Sunshine Steel" explores similar sonic territory, peppering a weighty, dub-style rhythm track with waves of attractive style pan melodies. It's not quite as celebratory as the A-side, but it's still very, very good.

Cat: MSR 019. Rel: 21 May 20
  1. Baila Chibiquiban (3:08)
  2. Baila Chibiquiban (Tonton Boom edit) (4:15)
Review: Late last month, Matasuna Records successfully mined "Ritual", the sought-after 1971 album by Nico Gomez and his Afro-Percussion Inc (a studio combo helmed by Belgian composer Joseph van het Groenewoud), and reissued one of the standout tracks, "Lupita". Here they serve up another gem from the album, "Baila Chibiquiban", an Incredible Bongo Band-esque fusion of psychedelic rock, heavy funk and even heavier Afro-Cuban percussion. The fine original version is given the re-edit treatment on the flip, with Tonton Boom extending some percussive passages and emphasizing the killer groove before introducing some of the track's headier musical elements. It's the kind of rework that should find favour with proper break-dancers.

Review: We've now come accustomed to sometimes unlikely cross-cultural musical fusions, though this album is the first we've come across that takes North African Gnawa music - one of the oldest Moroccan cultural traditions, fact fans - and fuses it with 21st century electronics and dancefloor-centric rhythms. It features vocals and traditional instrumentation from a renowned master of Gnawa, Rabii Harnoune, blended with the infectious grooves, contemporary synthesiser sounds and bass-weight of VB Kuhl, a Frankfurt-based producer whose roots are in off-kilter hip-hop. It's perhaps an unlikely pairing, but the results are simply superb. Don't take our word for it though - check it out for yourself. We'd be surprised if you weren't impressed.

Review: Serginho Meriti is a forgotten great of Brazilian funk, who was largely active in the early 80s but had thus far been overlooked by the reissue hounds. That all changes now as Time Capsule jump on his classic 1981 album "Bons Momentos", which transmits to you across the ages in a beautiful cascade of limber Latin heat. The tracks are playful and joyous, not least when aping recognisable musical motifs on tracks like "Malandro Velho". The slower jams hold up too - throughout the honey-coated arrangements and Meriti's smooth croon take on an intoxicating quality that can't fail to leave you feeling good, whatever the weather.

Cat: MUKAT 070. Rel: 27 Apr 20
  1. I Can Say (4:49)
  2. Let's Think It Over (3:55)
Review: Two raw afro dance floor bombs from Pat Thomas & Marijjata both taken from the Coming Home: Original Ghanaian Highlife & Afrobeat Classics 1964-1981 issued on Strur Records in 2016 and now presented on one killer hand-numbered 45 on the singles only imprint Mukatsuku .The a side ''I Can Say'' is issued for the very first time on a 45 & is a raucous trip into highlife-funk fusion territory where Thomas' urgent lead vocals and rousing horns rise above a suitably heavyweight groove .On the flip from 76 the powerful brass section of ''Lets Think It Over '' kicks off kicks off the tune with great impact before what essentially is simply an afro soul masterpiece.Pat Thomas shows us once again what a great song writer he is not only with his lyrics but also the dynamic arrangements of the funky groove.Hand -numbered to just 500 units. Once it's gone then its gone !

Review: Amongst highlife enthusiasts, Nkem Njoku & Ozzobia Sound's sole album is regarded as something of a classic, not least because of its party-friendly take on "Igbo highlife", a sub-genre of the Ghanaian style that utilises traditional Ogene 6/8 bell rhythms. The album's six tracks are infectious and wholeheartedly positive, with the assembled band - which included John Kante on guitar, a full horn section of boogie-era highlife keyboard maestro Jake Sollo - delivering instrumental backing tracks that ripple with colourful motifs, killer grooves and more than a hint of gospel righteousness. The title is certainly fitting, because it's a very special album indeed.

Review: For their latest flight on "Africa Airways", the Africa Seven collective has decided to treat us to some in-flight "Mile High Funk", all of which was recorded between 1974 and 1981. In practise, that means a mixture of disco-funk, boogie, Blaxploitation-style heaviness, Afro-disco and slap-bass-propelled goodness from across the African continent. Highlights are plentiful, with our picks including the Hammond-sporting heaviness of Akwassa's "Be Yourself (& Don't Let Nobody)", the synth-sporting highlife style revelry that is Eko's "Ndolo Embe Mulema" and the horn-heavy voodoo funk-soul cheeriness of Jude Bondeze's "Ndomo".

Review: Back in 2014, Here & Now Records released a sampler for an as-yet unfounded Leeds-based label called ATA Records. The compilation featured "rare soul, funk and Afro" tracks from friends and regular bandmates Neil Innes and Pete Williams under a variety of pseudonyms. ATA emerged a year later, so to celebrate the label's imminent fifth birthday, ATA chiefs Innes and Williams have decided to reissue the compilation under a tweaked title. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the sweaty, James Brown-inspired "The Flip" and the breezy, easy listening-influenced soul shuffle of "Brother Move On", to the deep funk hustle of "Cookie Jar" and the Mod-style soundtrack slowness of "Moscow Central".

Review: Since the 1950s, Lyon has played host to a vibrant cross-cultural musical scene, where musicians with North African heritage gather together in cafes to make music that blurs cultural and stylistic boundaries. As "Maghreb K7 Club" shows, some of these social meetings resulted in similarly inspired and unlikely collaborations. The compilation includes tracks made between 1985 and 1997, by and large those that utilised synthesizers and drum machines as well as traditional North African instrumentation, musical motifs and vocals. It's a hugely vibrant collection, with nods towards synth-pop, 1980s electrofunk and, most thrillingly of all, Jean-Michel Jarre's "Oxygen" (see Salah El Annabi's "Hata Fi Annaba"). In a word: intoxicating.

  2. Grupo Amigos - "La Gir Del Diablo" (3:25)
Review: The debut release from the freshly-minted Discodelic label offers up two exceedingly rare - and rather fine - "funky Latin" cover versions from the glory years of hallucinatory funk and soul. Side A sports Via Libre's flash-fried samba-funk cover of Marcos Valle's "Chi Chi Mentira", a heady re-imagination rich in Hammond organ stabs, undulating Latin percussion, groovy bass and a percussive middle section just tailor-made for DJs who like doubling up breaks. Over on the fiip you'll find something even heavier: Grupo Amigos' celebratory, organ-heavy funk-rock take on Trio Ternura's "La Gir Del Diablo", a song that was later famously turned into an international hit by Astrud Gilberto as "Black Magic (A Gira)".

Review: The debut album from Greek group Evritiki Zygia is named in honour of "Ormenion", a historical region in northern Greece that was first inhabited during the Byzantine era. As it borders both Turkey and Bulgaria, for centuries the region has been a melting pot of cultural - and particularly musical - traditions. The music showcased on the album has similarly eclectic, mixed-up roots, combining traditional instrumentation with the kind of fuzzy sounds, hallucinatory motifs and electronic riffs most readily associated with late 20th century psychedelic music from Turkey. It's an intriguing and hugely enjoyable blend all told, with highlights including the mind-altering brilliance of "Ormenion", the hazy intensity of "Maritsa" and the all-action vocal number "Anastenariko (Firewalking Dance)".
