Review: The third volume of the AfroColombia Remix series merges African and Colombian sounds with contemporary electronica. It's a collaboration between Colombian labels Galletas Calientes and Palenque Records that celebrates Palenque's 20+ years of activism and Galletas Calientes' two-decade legacy while honouring the late Abelardo Carbono with a remix of his track 'La PiNa Madura' by Voilaaa - it's a standout here with hints of funk, soul and disco all bringing the sunshine. The compilation also reinterprets Nigerian Igbo Highlife and Ekobe music thanks to producers Captain Planet, Uproot Andy and Caribombo. They bring new, funky energy to timeless classics while preserving the original cultural essence.

Stripping back the original to spotlight Gaye's sensual vocals and minimal conga-driven rhythm, this near-drumless edit is pure magic. Review: Mixed by Japanese producer and DJ Muro, who has a background in hip-hop, this connoisseur is never short on deep cuts and takes us on a journey through soulful, vintage AOR sonics from his home country. Whilst no two tracks are by the same artist, there's a cohesion to the tracklist thanks to Muro's ear in pulling out things that sit so well together. Asakawa Mak's 1988 cut 'American Night' is a smooth nod to sophisti pop greats Prefab Sprout; whilst Seri Ishikawa's elegant and lush number, 'Eternal 1/2', highlights how innovative she was in forging new sounds back in 1985. These two cuts are just the tip of the iceberg, yet this compilation is an ideal entry point to some of the finest Japanese music of the late 20th century. You can bank on Muro delivering the goods.

Review: ONEGRAM, the cult Japanese reggae band formed in 2011, is back with a new album that takes in everything from their genre-defying journey so far. Though known for blending reggae with lovers rock, they also fold in conscious vibes and disco grooves to their sodden and here the Tokyo-based outfit delivers ten tracks that reflect their unfiltered present. It's their first original album in five years following 2021's cover-focused Random Access Music and highlights include the soulful hit 'After the May Rain,' the groovy 'Crazy For You' (which even got praised by Incognito members) and a dreamy take on Bread & Butter's 1974 classic 'Pink Shadow.'. It's an honest, heartfelt and unmistakably ONEGRAM sound.

Review: First put out in 1973, this jazz gem from Miyako ?tsuki makes a triumphant return after 50 years. Nihon Min'y?: Latin Feeling is a forward-thinking fusion of traditional Japanese folk songs and Latin jazz grooves that was recorded when ?tsuki was in her 20s and remains one of her most unique works. Backed by elite Japanese jazz musicians like flautist Akira Miyazawa and guitarist Sadayasu Nakamaru, the music transforms min'y? into vibrant, rhythm-driven pieces with arrangements by Akira Komachi. It's a rich cultural crossover that's both daring and elegant and this reissue includes two bonus tracks and a vintage-style obi.

Review: Far Out Recordings reissues a hidden Argentinian gem with this offering, the late Agustin Pereyra Lucena's elusive 1988 LP, now restored from the original tapes. A guitarist rooted in Brazilian tradition but shaped by European travel and political exile, Lucena channels both clarity and melancholy into his playing. 'Luces de Valeria' and 'Preparativos Maritimos' offer delicate phrasing and compositional grace, while his take on Baden Powell's 'Pequeno Vals' drifts with lyrical restraint. The interplay between flute, brushed drums and nylon-string guitar reveals a liquid sensibility-evident too on 'Tema Barroco' by long-time collaborator Guilhermo Reuter. Anchored in Buenos Aires but marked by a traveller's perspective, these pieces shift subtly from samba-inflected intimacy to a cooler, more spacious lyricism. Lucena's phrasing reflects his belief that proximity to water affects one's musical flow-an idea borne out here in every fluid turn and tide of this understated masterwork.

Review: American saxophonist Joshua Redman returns with a new quartet featuring pianist Paul Cornish, bassist Philip Norris, and drummer Nazir Ebo i a group formed during touring dates following his previous Blue Note debut. The eight new compositions were written during the pandemic and reflect a more subdued register, with pieces often built around modal phrasing and pared-back forms. 'A Message to Unsend' and 'So It Goes' open the set with slow, measured arrangements that favour tone over speed. 'Words Fall Short' and 'Borrowed Eyes' continue in that vein, trading solo space across saxophone and piano without crowding the frame. 'Icarus' introduces more movement and sharper shifts, while 'Over the Jelly-Green Sky' pushes into freer rhythmic interplay without abandoning the central theme. 'She Knows' and 'Era's End' close the set with a return to stillness, the final track pairing Redman with guest vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa. Additional appearances from saxophonist Melissa Aldana and trumpeter Skylar Tang are folded in without disruption. It's a restrained but focused studio outing, shaped by clarity, not excess.

Review: This new one from Stefan Ringer on his FWM Entertainment combines two distinct releases in one: 3 tracks from his 2021 Meta Music EP and his darker alias Black Sued's 'Rogue' EP. It's a yin-yang journey of sound that shows his range and quality. 'Monotone' pairs signature deep chords and soulful vocals and distorted bass with minimal drums, while 'New Plan' is a driving, rhythmic workout of persistence and groove. Review: New Jersey-born organist Freddie Roach made his Blue Note debut in 1962 with a striking statement of groove and elegance. Recorded with tenor saxophonist Percy France, guitarist Kenny Burrell and drummer Clarence Johnston, this session captures Roach's early style in full swingilean, bluesy and imbued with soul-jazz vitality. 'Althea Soon' stands out as a masterclass in restraint, giving space for each player to dance between phrasing and feel, while 'De Bug' opens the set with a buoyant, minor-key strut that's all momentum and snap. Elsewhere, 'Ahm Miz' and 'Lion Down' channel easy swagger and smoky late-night warmth. This all-analogue reissue, cut by Kevin Gray and pressed on 180g vinyl, does justice to the tone of each instrument, particularly the tactile swell of Roach's B3. More than just a debut, it's a blueprint of the intimate, rhythm-led sound that defined his early yearsiand a vital slice of soul-jazz from the Blue Note vaults.

Review: Two popular tracks from the highly rated and MURO-curated compilation Diggin Victor: Deep Into The Vaults Of Japanese Fusion / AOR are now made available for the first time on their own standout 7". Originally released as a limited item at an anniversary event, these rare gems are magically escapist sounds that blend library music, jazz, soul and Balearic mindsets into a pair of tropical heaters. The Kumi Sasak A-side is a real melodic noodler with meandering bass and a whimsical, carefree spirit as it heads nowhere in particular in hypnotic fashion. Side-B has 'Kimono' by Tetsuo Sakurai, which is a more rhythmic sound with funky bass riffs and 80s broken beats and a lush vocal.

Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Edit master Scruscru rarely misses no matter what sounds he decides to put under his scalpel. For this one on his own superb Scruniversal label he turns his attention to the lush sound world of City Pop over in Japan. On one vital 12" the maestro cooks up six varied but equally vital sizzlers starting with the funky sounds and big brass of 'One For Xsuxsu' then taking in the blissed out disco and house beats of 'Kyoto Sunshine', jazzy keys of 'Horomi & Rikishi', funky bass twangs of 'Secret Dream' and jazz lunge excellence of 'Nippon Bossa' before 'Scrutinised Tune' closes out with brown beats and sunny chords. Scruperb stuff.

Review: A rhythmic firebrand in the lineage of Guy Konket, Lukuber Sejor took gwoka's militant pulse and bent it into a tenderer, cosmic and less flinching glassform. Mizik Filamonik: Spiritual Sound, recorded on a shoestring in 1979, still hits like a flare. Raised in Sainte-Anne, Sejor developed his style alongside future Kassav' drummer Claude Vamur, drawing jazz, electric keyboards and gender-balanced reponde into the raw spine of ka rhythms. The record opens with the instrumental 'Eritage', unfurling Sejor's project: to retool "mizik a vie neg" as a form of spiritual resistance. Meanwhile, side B's triptych, 'Primye voyaj', 'Dezyem voyaj', 'Twazyem voyaj', charts a psychic route from slavery to exile and return. Released with no budget, no tour and one day of studio time, the album's legend outlived its moment, echoing through strikes, wakes and Radio Guadeloupe airwaves.
