Review: Costas Andriopoulos has released previous albums via Nadanna, and now he's back for round three with more seductive, noirish synthwave material to soundtrack your cinematic night drive through city streets (real or imaginary). "Voices In The Night" is a stylistic triumph - every heavy hearted lead, thrumming arpeggio and bombastic vocal is executed to perfection. You might well think this album was actually a curio dug out of obscurity by an Italo hound, it's so convincing. The world created by 23rd Underpass is a treat to melt into - all neon lights, fast cars and sharp haircuts - don't deny you want to take a trip through this fantasy land too...

Review: When he first emerged in the 1990s, Damon Baxter AKA Deadly Avenger was best known for laying down breakbeat-driven club cuts heavily influenced by funk, soul and hip-hop. He's completely flipped the script in recent years by variously turning his hand to chillwave, darkwave and John Carpenter style soundtrack fare. His latest album continues on this theme, offering a range of bold, synthesizer and drum machine heavy tracks that veer from bouncy and floor-friendly ("Your God Is Too Small" and the EBM-influenced "Destroy All Humans"), to slow and creepy ("A Promise For Kumiko", "The Mysterions"), deliciously glassy-eyed (the sunrise rush of "Gunman Omega" and "Tokyo SOS") and intoxicatingly chugging ("Myuki My Love").

  1. Kyoto - "Venetian Blinds" (4:34)
  2. Zoe Sinatra - "Mais Qu'est-ce Que Tu Fumes" (4:12)
Review: The Belgian crate diggers behind the STROOM label have dug up more overlooked gold here, bringing together two disparate but equally impressive tracks. On the A-side you'll find Kyoto's 1984 single "Venetian Blinds", a curious but hugely enjoyable chunk of bustling, off-kilter synth-pop rich in crunchy machine drums, undulating bass, Prince style guitars and stylish female vocals. Over on the flip it's all about Zoe Sinatra's 1990 B-side "Mais Qu'est-ce Que Tu Fumes". This semi slow-motion affair wraps half-whispered, half-sung bi-lingual vocals and alien synthesizer melodies around a rubbery but chugging electronic groove.

Saving Drum (Bullion mixes) (140 gram vinyl 12")

  2. Saving Grace (Bullion Redux) (6:04)
  3. Tight As A Drum (4:39)
  4. Tight As A Drum (Bullion Redux) (4:35)
Review: Thomas Leer was mainly active in the late 70s and early 80s, dropping two singles on Cherry Red that provided the source material for the two original tracks on this Emotional Rescue reissue 12". Opener "Saving Grace" is a rich, bombastic blast of synthwave, all chugging arps and massive leads, while "Tight As A Drum" heads into more psychedelic territory, using strange gating techniques and deft FX to create a wondrous, shimmering bed for Leer's poetic chat over the top. Bringing an inventive angle to the release, the label signed Bullion up for two wonderfully warm, wobbly remixes. Honing in on the weirder qualities of Leer's work, these modern interpretations make a perfect bridge from the old to the new - highly recommended!

  2. Disco Monroe (6:48)
  3. Quebec / Makolet (Khidja remix) (7:00)
  4. Disco Monroe (MR TC remix) (6:08)
Review: Niv Ast only has one other release to their name, a self-released album that landed no less than five years ago. Now Snap, Crackle & Pop have tapped up the mysterious producer for a striking record that matches modern 4/4 styles with new wave grit, leading in with the seriously moody "Quebec / Makolet". "Disco Monroe" has a slower tempo to appeal to the chugger crowd, with a seductive French vocal hovering over the top of the steady trucking rhythm section. Khidja tackles "Quebec / Makolet" on the flip, injecting some spaced out processing into the original to create an otherworldly version that does a great service to the source material. Mr TC then pings "Disco Monroe" out into a heavily dubbed hinterland, where the delay feedback and reverb decays rain down heavy over a slow, fractured beat.

Review: On their third album, Tiger & Woods have decided to flip the script a little, paying tribute to Italy's remote, rural clubs of the early 1980s. To do this, they've sampled up a wealth of material from Rome's boogie-inspired, Italo-disco era Full Time and Goodymusic labels and turned it into slow motion and mid-tempo gold. As a result, the album's eight tracks are altogether more sun-kissed and Balearic in feel than their electrofunk-inspired club jams of old, though this is no bad thing. In fact, there's an argument to suggest that "AOD" (it stands for Adult Oriented Dance apparently) is their most enjoyable and listenable album to date, with less reliance on heavyweight loop jams and more intricate musical touches. However you spin it, "AOD" is a glassy-eyed, loved up triumph.

Review: The 1980s was a breakthrough time for underground electronic music. Before restrictive genre definitions saw different modes of expression streamlined, the options were wide open in the lawless surge of post punk and industrial culture. This finely curated compilation from PIAS provides an excellent overview of some of the deadliest operators from this wildly creative time - the names involved are integral to the development of electronic music in the 80s. Throbbing Gristle, DAF, Cabaret Voltaire, Front 242, Nitzer Ebb, Meat Beat Manifesto - just some of the legendary names shown in their best light on this essential collection.
