Wake Up (12")
Cat: BAC 003. Rel: 14 May 20
  1. Wake Up (feat Kaleta) (5:35)
  2. Omo Iya (feat Kaleta) (5:21)
  3. Mambue (feat Justo Valdez & Evan Laflamme) (6:07)
  4. El Carriqui (4:22)
Review: When it comes to blending contemporary dancefloor sounds with aspects of vintage funk, soul and Afro-Latin music, there are few more adept producers than former Whiskey Barons man BOSQ. He's at it again here on his first 12" of 2020. Afro-funk star Kaleta provides vocals on both A-side tracks, the Afrobeat-influenced disco-funk cheeriness of "Wake Up" (an infectious chunk of sun-soaked goodness) and the Afro-Cuban percussive shuffle of horn-heavy delight "Omo Iya". Elsewhere, Justo Valdez and Evan Laflamme guest on the Afro-Latin breeziness of "Mambue" (all dancing woodwind, Fela sax and layered drums), while "El Carriqi" sees BOSQ add Tito Puente style percussion and tight Fela Kuti style sax blasts to a club-ready Afro-house groove.

Review: Eagle eyed diggers might have spotted Camarao Orkestra's excellent Nacao Africa 12" single dropping last year on Favorite Recordings. Now the promise of that single has been followed up with this wonderful album - a scintillating blend of Latin jazz, funk, samba, Afrobeat and much more besides. The playing is second to none, not least the gorgeous Rhodes on "Dia De Verao", and the energy pivots nimbly across these seven tracks to make for a varied but cohesive listen. Uptempo "Guerreiro Yoruba" is an infectious stomper, while "Copacabana" captures a cool 70s funk vibe that wouldn't sound out of place on a Rufus & Chaka Khan record. With the title track bringing the perfect laid back party flavour too, there's a lot to savour on this album, not least while the sun is shining.

Review: It would be fair to say that "Camaleon" - Spanish for "chameleon", fact fans - is a fitting title for the debut album by Carlos "Caribombo" Guillen. Born to Colombian and Venezuelan parents, but now living in France, the percussionist/DJ/producer makes music that not only draws on his South American roots, but also his love of contemporary music from all four corners of the globe, be it the tropical sounds of Mauritius, Afro-house, Portuguese kuduro, Jamaican dub or British bass music. As a result, the Venezuelan's debut album a tropical, multi-coloured treat that's joyfully hard to describe. Don't take our word for it: give it a listen ASAP!

  1. Celia Cruz Y La Sonora Matancera - "Mi Bomba Sono" (2:37)
  2. Joey Pastrana Y Su Orquesta - "A Bailar Oriza" (2:54)
Review: In a bid to celebrate the widespread influence of Afro-Cuban music - and in particular the work of one of Cuba's most storied songwriters, Silvestre Mendez - the Rocafort Records crew has decided to dig into the archives and offer up two stone cold classics from the golden age of Cuban music. On side A you'll find Celia Cruz and La Sonora Matancera's 1963 version of "Mi Bomba Sono", an infectious dancefloor number in which Cruz's fantastic vocals rise above a Tito Puente style rhythm, squealing horns and cheeky pianos. Over on the flip you'll find the killer salsa vibes of Joey Pastrana and his Latin orchestra's superb version of "A Bailar Oriza". Even more percussive than the A-side, it's absolutely essential.

Cat: MSR 019. Rel: 21 May 20
  1. Baila Chibiquiban (3:08)
  2. Baila Chibiquiban (Tonton Boom edit) (4:15)
Review: Late last month, Matasuna Records successfully mined "Ritual", the sought-after 1971 album by Nico Gomez and his Afro-Percussion Inc (a studio combo helmed by Belgian composer Joseph van het Groenewoud), and reissued one of the standout tracks, "Lupita". Here they serve up another gem from the album, "Baila Chibiquiban", an Incredible Bongo Band-esque fusion of psychedelic rock, heavy funk and even heavier Afro-Cuban percussion. The fine original version is given the re-edit treatment on the flip, with Tonton Boom extending some percussive passages and emphasizing the killer groove before introducing some of the track's headier musical elements. It's the kind of rework that should find favour with proper break-dancers.

Review: We've now come accustomed to sometimes unlikely cross-cultural musical fusions, though this album is the first we've come across that takes North African Gnawa music - one of the oldest Moroccan cultural traditions, fact fans - and fuses it with 21st century electronics and dancefloor-centric rhythms. It features vocals and traditional instrumentation from a renowned master of Gnawa, Rabii Harnoune, blended with the infectious grooves, contemporary synthesiser sounds and bass-weight of VB Kuhl, a Frankfurt-based producer whose roots are in off-kilter hip-hop. It's perhaps an unlikely pairing, but the results are simply superb. Don't take our word for it though - check it out for yourself. We'd be surprised if you weren't impressed.

Review: For their latest flight on "Africa Airways", the Africa Seven collective has decided to treat us to some in-flight "Mile High Funk", all of which was recorded between 1974 and 1981. In practise, that means a mixture of disco-funk, boogie, Blaxploitation-style heaviness, Afro-disco and slap-bass-propelled goodness from across the African continent. Highlights are plentiful, with our picks including the Hammond-sporting heaviness of Akwassa's "Be Yourself (& Don't Let Nobody)", the synth-sporting highlife style revelry that is Eko's "Ndolo Embe Mulema" and the horn-heavy voodoo funk-soul cheeriness of Jude Bondeze's "Ndomo".

Review: Back in 2014, Here & Now Records released a sampler for an as-yet unfounded Leeds-based label called ATA Records. The compilation featured "rare soul, funk and Afro" tracks from friends and regular bandmates Neil Innes and Pete Williams under a variety of pseudonyms. ATA emerged a year later, so to celebrate the label's imminent fifth birthday, ATA chiefs Innes and Williams have decided to reissue the compilation under a tweaked title. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the sweaty, James Brown-inspired "The Flip" and the breezy, easy listening-influenced soul shuffle of "Brother Move On", to the deep funk hustle of "Cookie Jar" and the Mod-style soundtrack slowness of "Moscow Central".

Review: Since the 1950s, Lyon has played host to a vibrant cross-cultural musical scene, where musicians with North African heritage gather together in cafes to make music that blurs cultural and stylistic boundaries. As "Maghreb K7 Club" shows, some of these social meetings resulted in similarly inspired and unlikely collaborations. The compilation includes tracks made between 1985 and 1997, by and large those that utilised synthesizers and drum machines as well as traditional North African instrumentation, musical motifs and vocals. It's a hugely vibrant collection, with nods towards synth-pop, 1980s electrofunk and, most thrillingly of all, Jean-Michel Jarre's "Oxygen" (see Salah El Annabi's "Hata Fi Annaba"). In a word: intoxicating.

As it borders both Turkey and Bulgaria, for centuries the region has been a melting pot of cultural - and particularly musical - traditions. The music showcased on the album has similarly eclectic, mixed-up roots, combining traditional instrumentation with the kind of fuzzy sounds, hallucinatory motifs and electronic riffs most readily associated with late 20th century psychedelic music from Turkey. It's an intriguing and hugely enjoyable blend all told, with highlights including the mind-altering brilliance of "Ormenion", the hazy intensity of "Maritsa" and the all-action vocal number "Anastenariko (Firewalking Dance)".
