Vagabond EP (El Buho, Sooma remixes)
Cat: BHILL 004. Rel: 08 Jul 19
  1. A1 (6:41)
  2. N1 (7:25)
  3. N2 (5:55)
  4. A2 (feat Loa Myst & Nu Fvnk) (7:25)
  5. A2 (feat Loa Myst & Nu Fvnk - El Buho remix) (6:53)
  6. A1 (Sooma remix) (7:32)
Review: The Banana Hill crew continue in their quest to represent some of the finest sounds transmitting from the African continent, this time showcasing the immersive ruminations of Kenya's Jinku. "A1" takes a seriously deep trip into stripped back house percussion and atmospheric vocal chants, while "N1" sports a more jagged rhythm section that meanders through emotive suites of sound before the mellower downtempo mood of "N2". On the flip, "A2" features moody vocal turns from Loa Myst and Nu Fvnk that suit the laconic house structure, which El Buho gently nudges into a more crooked remix without losing the heady atmosphere. Sooma then tackles "A1" and ups the bass-led house pressure with a measured touch that respectfully embellishes the original.

  10. All The Time (4:27)
Review: Four years have passed since Jessy Lanza last offered-up an album, the Jeremy Greenspan co-produced leftfield space-pop masterpiece that was "Oh No". While plenty has changed in Lanza's working life since then - she now lives in New York and improvises more with "modular and semi-modular" synthesizers - her commitment to delivering a genuinely unique take on 21st century synth-pop remains. Those versed in the work of the Junior Boys will hear the hand of regular collaborator Jeremy Greenspan in the chords, melodies and synthesizer settings, but "All The Time" is undoubtedly Lanza's vision. Combining her usual glassy-eyed vocals and ear-pleasing, often melancholic synth-pop sounds with the colourful vibrancy of future R&B and grooves that subtly reference all manner of styles (dubstep included), it's most perfect underground pop album you'll hear all year.

Drifting Forwards EP
Drifting Forwards EP (140 gram vinyl 12" + insert & sticker)
Cat: WSR LF3. Rel: 27 Jul 20
  1. IZ 200 (6:09)
  2. Drifting Forwards (4:37)
  3. C Rota (6:45)
  4. Mondo (6:18)
Review: Well Street continues to be a hotbed of innovation in the cloudy climes of contemporary UK techno, with label mainstay Loop LF returning for his third EP. The record opens in subliminal style with the restrained, heavy-stepping sideswipe of "IZ 200" before melting into "Drifting Forwards," a richly dubbed-out dreamscape of clicking and popping percussion and sparkly chord drops with a purposeful swagger around the rhythm section. The B side kicks off with the nervy minimalist techno abstraction of "C Rota", where sound design plays a vital role alongside cyclical rhythms in creating a truly transcendent yet strikingly sparse sound. "Mondo" closes proceedings with one of the more forthright tunes on the record, following a strident if still proudly leftfield groove that captures a little '90s downtempo funk and gives it a cosmic, hi-def refit.

Objekt #4 (hand-stamped 12" + MP3 download code Nachpressung) (1 per customer)
Cat: OBJEKT 004. Rel: 22 Jul 20
  1. Needle & Thread (9:26)
  2. Theme From Q (7:22)
Review: Since releasing the third volume in his white label 12" series back in 2013, Objekt (AKA Berlin-based Brit TJ Hertz) has become one of techno most in-demand talents. Here he returns to where it all began with volume four, in the process serving up a pair of certified late night treats. "Needle & Thread" sees him doff a cap to Paul Woolford's Special Request project, cannily combining typically Berlin-style techno elements - trippy noises, extended chords, weird effects, and so on - with punchy blasts of hardcore style breakbeats. The beats remain broken on UK Funky influenced flipside "Theme From Q", where vintage MK style melody motifs ride crunchy drums, fizzing electrofunk synth squiggles and mind-altering sub-bass.

  10. The Rest Is Noise (5:02)
  11. Girl (4:04)
Review: In Colour is of course the long awaited debut solo album from The xx's in-house knob twiddler Jamie 'xx' Smith, arriving through regular home Young Turks backed with a whole host of guest appearances. The more obsessive Jamie xx fans out there (of which we wager there are many) will no doubt already have burned out their laptops and retinas basking in the all too colourful pre-release streams of In Colour, but it's always nice to grip an album in your hands. The eleven tracks on In Colours come across like a low key ode to the rave from Jamie and pals, with Four Tet, Romy & Oli xx, Young Thug and Popcaan featuring, and yes there is also plenty of steel pan. "Hold Tight", which sounds like Jamie's attempt at forest techno, is a definite highlight! Young Turks have popped in a CD edition of the album too.

Review: Having previously worked with SBTRKT, Kanye West, Drake, Jesse Ware and Frank Ocean, amongst others, Sampha is no newcomer. This, though, is the British singer, songwriter and producer's debut album, and it's something of an understated gem. One particularly enthusiastic reviewer called it "an R&B album for the ages"; while that may be pushing it a bit, there's no denying that Process is an impressive collection of tracks. The beats are inventive, the electronics crisp, the samples carefully chosen, and the musical touches pitched just right. At the centre of it all stands Sampha, delivering thoughtful, heartfelt and sometimes poignant lyrics in his wonderfully evocative voice.

Review: Paul Woolford has spent a good chunk of his downtime over the last year or two making Special Request tracks in his pants. So much so, in fact, that he's created enough material to fill four albums, all of which will be released this year. "Vortex" is the first and is, in Woolford's own words, high on "bangers" and low on "conceptual guff". In practice, that means lots of gut-busting low-end frequencies, trippy analogue electronics, razor-sharp rave-style riffs and bustling rhythms that variously touch on electro, early '90s progressive house, breakbeat hardcore, slamming Joey Beltram style techno (see album highlight "Fahrenheit 451") and metallic, delightfully mangled drum and bass ("Fett", whose wonky electronic undulations hark back to early Woolford classic "Erotic Discourse").

Review: Having set our world alight with his third Ilian Tape 12", 2012, back in the spring, Munich man Skee Mask delivers another essential collection of loose-limbed, broken techno workouts. Typically, he's on point from the word go, enveloping swinging, off-kilter techno breakbeats with swirling chords and cascading melodies on brilliant opener "Inti". His love of African-influenced polyrhythms is explored further on the ghostly, percussion-rich club cut "Kappelberg Chant" (which, incidentally, makes great use of choral chants), while "Routine" is a warm, loved-up and evocative tribute to rave-era British breakbeat-house. His debt to British dance music's formative years also comes to the fore on killer proto-jungle jam "Skreet Lvl Dub".

  4. Dawn Razor - "Be As One 1" (5:37)
Review: Holding Hands are back with another crucial summer VA EP and it's another hearty selection. Breaka's "Loose Subs" takes the lead on a bubbling 160 flex with a vibe that's not dissimilar to Zinc back in his golden days. Guava drops the tempo for an acidic two-step piece while Lrds' "Quanda" is an ice cold electro joint with more shuffle than a poker house. Last but not least Dawn Razor shuts down the EP on a deliciously stripped back breaky tip that blossoms with a new element on every 32. Slam Jam thank you ma'am.

  3. Stabilizer (4:36)
  4. Seita (5:36)
Review: De Grey launched last year with a 12" from Webstarr, and now it follows up with the raw, rough and ready sound of Jack Angle. "Week-End" is a lithe, percussive beast of a track that matches bloated kicks with glassy hits for a tracky but distinctive end result. "6PNHHPE" is a looped up, off-kilter affair that sports an industrial techno thread but heads into stranger territory with ease. "Stablilizer" is a more balanced, melodic affair but again those distinctive metallic tones pervade the mix and inject some real character into Angle's music. "Selta" takes this approach and whips it up into the most lively, peak-time minded belter on the whole record, sneakily tucked away on the B2.

  4. Wet (House Of Black Lanterns remix)
Review: Skubi steps into the limelight with his debut release for Modern Ruin, an imprint reserved strictly for the finest in footwork killers. "Brain Music" is basically a modern hip-hop lick with cavernous low-ends and that familiar juke vocal stutter. The same goes for "Wet", a relatively darker, dreamier sort of affair. Remixes comes from none other than Slick Shoota and House Of Black Lanterns, the former opting for a jungle swing while the latter twists and funks that juke into an even nuttier bundle of drums and percussion. Large.

  1. Liquid Gold (5:03)
  2. Ease Up (5:59)

Review: Charlie Baker's second self-released EP as Breaka begins with something bold, booming and undeniably attractive: a rave-lighting number that giddily joins the dots between two-step UK garage, the rugged darkness of breakbeat garage and the piano-powered, loved-up bliss of rave era breakbeat hardcore. Throw in a spine-tingling breakdown and you have a copper-bottomed hit (as North Norfolk Digital's own Alan Partridge might say). Baker's love of life-affirming piano motifs comes to the fore once more on "Ease Up", a deeper affair rich in weighty sub-bass, snappy broken beats and dreamy chords, while "Steeze Flex" is a pleasingly jazzy number smothered in rich chords and bubbly, sun-kissed electronics.

Review: The Busy Twist run a really interesting operation... Inspired by the UK's bass movement, the London-based producers have recorded extensively in their native Ghana, giving this a truly international tongue. A fine case in point is Drumtalk's remix of the brilliantly titled "Auntie Fatty": riddled with all manner of chopped up chants and percussion, there's a very familiar riff on the drop. "Floor Excitement" is another highlight; the vocals are reminiscent of a Wookie plate but delivered with heartwarming gusto. Technically this is an EP... But with such a bounty of tropical treats, this is almost album material.

Review: With his weighty fusions on murky dubstep, broken techno and mutilated polyrhythms, Sam Walton has always been a hard producer to pin down. He's at it again on "Abyss", his first missive of 2020. There's much to set the pulse racing throughout, from the smoky aural textures, sustained organ chords and off-kilter rhythms of "Scooped", to the warped bass, rolling drums and popping electronic motifs of closing cut "Abyss". Sandwiched in between you'll find a razor-sharp cut of raw rave revivalism (the '92 hardcore style rush of "SBWYS") and a muscular fusion of mind-bending bass and stuttering drums that sounds like a bassbin-bothering anthem in the making ("Smashed Carbs").

Review: Given the hype that surrounded the release of the first Moderat set back in 2009, we can surely expect more of the same for this second outing from Apparat and Modeselektor. Those familiar with the first album's woozy blend of IDM, Thom Yorke indebted vocal dreaminess, porchlight techno and post-dubstep rhythms will immediately feel right at home. Online reviews have focused largely on II's atmospheric warmth, and the way in which the Berlin-based trio seems to have refined their sound. Both are valid critiques; certainly, there's a maturity and musical complexity to the album that betters much of their previous works. It's not much of a dancefloor set, but that's entirely the point; this is locked-in headphone listening for the wide-eyed generation.

This time label head honchos Bronsert and Szary team up with good mate Sascha Ring aka Apparat for another session as well.. Moderat, of course! Highlights include the bittersweet and bass heavy pop inflections of "Bad Kingdom" featuring Ring's powerful vocals, the epically future beats of "Let In The Light" or "Ilona" and the upbeat dusty deep house of "Milk". Superb production on display throughout the album and don't forget to check out the killer remixes by Skee Mask and Benjamin Damage (amongst others) available soon as well.

Tightly sprung and firing off in different directions, getting louder and louder with every bar. "Vyzee" plays the consummate contrast with a slice of lollipop funk that tips a cheeky nod to the Tom Tom Club but done in Sophie's own strange way.

Review: Since she last released some original music, Ikonika has been through a lot, including - in her own words - "pregnancy, depression and therapy". It's undoubtedly great to have her back in business, not least because "Bodies" offers a reminder of her undoubted musical talents. She begins with the spacey, bass-heavy slipped electro attractiveness of "Your Body", before opting for even bolder bass, more futuristic electronic motifs and broken beats on the arguably even better "Nobody". Turn to the flipside for the punchy, machine-gun breaks, drowsy chords and warped analogue riffs of "What Kinda Pain Are We Talking About", as well as the snappy, all-action electro/breakbeat fusion of ghostly and intergalactic closing cut "Bodied (Roller Mix)", the EP's most sweaty and percussive moment.

Review: Planet Mu usher in the return of Ital Tek and a new sonic approach for the long-term label associate, as Hollowed finds Alan Myson switching up his approach. The chance to immerse himself in a new studio set up was the impetus for Myson to engage in laying down countless hours' worth of loops, drones and textures. It is apparently a method he used as a teenager, but armed with years of recording experience he was now able to make the record he had then envisaged. Fans of the crisp style of dubstep Ital Tek made his name on might be a bit taken aback by this new direction, but there is plenty of fine music to explore here for those that like their sounds abstract and impressionistic.

These various artist releases are also a perfect introduction to some essential new talent, and that's clear from the off with the snaking, echo chamber pressure of Box 5ive. Keppel's "Taken For Granted" is a distinctive slice of crooked 21st century soul that sports a whiff of early Kimbie / Blake in the vocals and overall attitude. Henry Greenleaf's "Snide" is a taut drum track that teases as much as it delivers, and Formant Value trips out into a meditative soundscape of pattering percussion and spacious atmospherics.

Cong Burn 03
Cong Burn 03 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: CB 03. Rel: 16 Jul 18
  1. Chekov - "Spring" (5:34)
  2. Duckett - "Lost In Israel" (5:06)
  3. Lack - "Track 3" (8:21)
  4. Haddon - "Anabiosis" (3:00)
Review: Cong Burn continues to exercise one of the most promising instincts for future-minded music on this, their third release. It's surprising they haven't done more previously, considering the maturity of their curation, but either way the quality remains at an all time high here, leading in with some light and liquefied 4/4 sonics from Chekov before pirouetting into one of Duckett's illustrious abstractions around the techno blueprint. Label regular Lack is back on side B with the stern and punchy "Track 3," and then Haddon finishes the record off with "Anabiosis," a densely textured, slow creeping trip of a track.

Santa Muerte Riddim
Santa Muerte Riddim (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: DSRS 004. Rel: 05 Nov 19
  1. Rider Shafique - "Santa Muerte" (3:46)
  2. Jahdan Blakkamoore - "Liberation Over Liberace" (3:36)
  3. Pupajim - "Open Mindedness" (3:12)
  4. Jonah Freed - "Santa Muerte Riddim" (3:36)
Review: One riddim track, three hugely distinctive voices; Dub-Stuy continue their riddim series with "Santa Muerte Riddim". Loose, spacious, mystic and led by cold steel string twangs, Jonah Freed's beat sings on its own merits but each vocalist adds their own touch. Rider Shafique takes the lead with his signature smoky tones and poetics, Jahdan Blakkamoore contrasts between his gravelly spoken word and musicality on the chorus before Pupajim lets the beat breathe a little more before going full harmonic ham. Holy moly.

  3. Jam (5:07)
  4. Nunun (3:44)
Review: The dust has had only weeks to settle on her album Nao Fales Nela Que A Mentes that landed last month but Nidia is back with four more essentials. More direct, firm and club-focused than her last release, each of these batida bruisers hits with a jagged, raw funk. "Chef" cooks up the drama with clipped laser sounds and trappy elements around the percussive rhythm, "Hard" is all about the synth brass and carnival energy, "Jam" hits with a trance twist while the finale "Nunun" closes on the tense hypnotic signature she's really made a name for herself with... Just wait for that euphoric breakdown and feel the release. Crucial.

Review: Hot Portuguese property Pedro has been glued to our radar since his debut "Damaia" EP in 2017. Fusing club music with Angolan, Brazilian and Cape Verdean influences, "Da Linha" is a bewitching brew of beats and bass that sits somewhere between gqom and house and never sits still. One moment we're treated to a tropical grime admonishment ("Too Much" with Nigerian MC Magugu), the next we're being massaged into sublime submission with the soothing reflective "Terra Treme", and before we know it we're neck deep in a dancefloor riot on the beat-heavy "Stuck On You" where the addictive whistling line and Bryte's vocals drive us into an entirely different submission. Loaded with emotional, moving moments such as the Balearic sunset-charmed "Calores", this is a superb accomplished debut album from an exciting artist who's just at the start of his journey.

  5. DJ Chalice - "Artois Anthem" (4:26)
  6. DJ Chalice - "Raise Ya Chalice" (3:40)
Review: Chow Down serves up its second release with the adventurous grime exploits of Fallow and DJ Chalice, twisting out all kinds of audacious bass shapes that would set the dance alight at parties such as Boxed. Fallow takes the A side with confidence, fresh from a release on Blood Frenzy, and "Blitz" shows the emergent producer is taking no prisoners with a hail of bullets and haunting Indian classical samples. "Northern Don" is a more wobbly synth-rich beat, while "Operation Dark Fruit VIP" amps up the grime strings. DJ Chalice has a lighter touch, bringing in some sunnier melodics and embracing the RnB influences on "Artois Anthem".

Review: Melbourne beat fusionist DJ Plead taps deep into his Lebanese roots for this truly body blowing middle eastern infused bass EP. Six tracks of fractured, freeform fun, you're spoilt for choice here. The spasmodic breakbeat freakery of "Salt And Pepper", the rolling momentum and molten hypnotic percussive layers of "Liquify", the rattling drums and staccato flare of "Shoulder Pop" and the strange blend of turbo focus but offbeat funk of "Baharat" are just some of the instantly hip-switching highlights. Essential.

  4. Matrix Wave (4:44)
Review: Alan Arbelaez makes his first outing on vinyl, launching the Keepers Of The Wild label with a forthright selection of rave minded goodies pitched at the darker side of the dance. "Ravejavik" revolves around terse breakbeats and uneasy DX7 keys, making for a most intense of club workouts pitched at an even tempo. "Downton Abbey Trax" equally keeps the tempo slow and deadly as a hailstorm of rave tropes meet with emotive string samples, while "Hidden Agenda" explores paranoid house with pan pipe leads flown in over the top. The release rounds off with "Matrix Wave", a more meditative, dubstep flavoured cut showing another side to this emergent artist.

This time, Warp Records and all round UK electronica legend Luke Vibert gives us the delightful oddball groove that is "Africable", Italian DJ Clap! Clap! Gives us the African polyrhythms via Detroit high-tech soul on "Kulira" while Los Angeles duo With You give us the sublime "No Resistance". Each 1500 albums sold will feed a school of 500 forever! Support a great cause and feed your ears with some wonderful music while you're at it.

  4. Nightshade Edition (5:05)
Review: Lyra Valenza's second EP for Petrola 80 (the first, a co-release with Black Opal, dropped in 2018) is a suitably giddy and action-packed affair, with the duo gleefully melding shimmering, vintage-sounding synthesizer sounds and bustling bass music elements to create a quartet of ear-catching cuts. Perhaps the most obviously peak-time ready number is sub-heavy, cut-up breakbeat number "Sport Mode" - think pitched-down, early Good Lookin' style drum and bass, and you're close - though the sparkling, sun-drenched jungle shimmer of "Nightshade Edition" runs it close. Elsewhere, opener "Blind Spot Monitor" is the kind of jumpy, kaleidoscopic concoction that reminded us of some of Luke Vibert's best work, while "Low B4" is rushing, saucer-eyed, breakbeat-fuelled IDM of the highest order.

  2. Feel Me (Parris remix) (4:52)
Review: Following his releases on Planet Mu and Sneakers Social Club, the inimitable Basic Rhythm returns on his own new series Raw Basics with two club hurting versions. "Break It Down VIP" goes back to one of his earlier tunes in 2016 and flips it into an absolute rave monster. Meanwhile on the B, London bubbler Parris slows things right down to a moody dubby sludge, complete with big droning siren. Heavy, low and slow. Perfect for the summer.

Review: East London queer scene darlings Super Drama continue their throbbing vein of form with three funkified breakbeat jams for all shades of the night. "Excess" is the midnight bounce. Rude bass and sweaty arrangements warming up the party. "Once Is Enough" is a much sassier, slinkier affair with Kuntessa calling the shots well into the wee hours. "Faux Pas" takes us to the afterparty; bumping drums, a classic electro groove and dubby washes. Ghetto fabulous.

Review: Despite its vintage, Warp is still a label that looks to consistently surprise with the signing of US 'supergroup' Future Brown a most interesting addition indeed. Formed of Fatima Al Qadiri, Lit City Trax boss J-Cush and Nguzunguzu pair Asma Maroof and Daniel Pineda, Future Brown meld grime, R&B, dancehall and everything inbetween for a typically forward thinking style of music equally indebted to the club as well as the charts. This self titled album follows a 12" for Warp last year and those swayed by the particular charms of "Wanna Party" will find much to enjoy in the 11 tracks featured here with Night Slugs artist Kelela, Ruff Sqwad members Rapid and Dirty Danger and Roll Deep affiliates Roachee and Riko Dan all adding to the party!

Review: Making their debut on Warp, Hudson Mohawke and Lunice proudly cross their beams to rain down a sick and slick kind of future-crunk, aptly demonstrated in in the introductory nature of bass-rich teaser "Top Floor" with its juke leanings and menacing posture. There's a detuned nature to the recognisable bleeps and wails on offer here while the beats remain crunchy and steadfast. "Higher Ground" is more overt in its use of juke to create a twisted kind of hype, while "Bugg'n" drips and drops in a loping vat of sub bass and slow-mo strangeness, leaving you with one of the oddest takes on the contemporary mess of electronic beats.
