Emancipacao
Cat: RNT 45007. Rel: 12 Jan 21
  1. Emancipacao (5:05)
  2. 50 Anos Em 5 (4:37)
Review: Diogo Strausz has previously released on Razor-N-Tape as part of the duo Balako but now steps up as a solo artist to kick off the label's 2021. A Sao Paulista now living in Paris, he brings plenty of musicality to the slick 7", firstly with 'Emancipacao,' which is awash with melancholic keys and rich bass but also plenty of fantastic leads from both synths and sax. It's splashy and splashy and colourful disco. '50 Anos Em 5' then gets playful and funky with a Latin twist as the salsa beats an squelchy bass all make you want to spin on your heels.

Made You Look
Made You Look (7" + MP3 download code)
Cat: HR 007. Rel: 13 Jan 21
  1. Bounce Castle - "Made You Look" (Bengaluru Bounce remix) (3:04)
  2. Altered Tapes - "Tiger Styles" (36 Chambers remix) (3:40)
Review: Hardcore funk and breaks lovers rejoice - the latest Heat Rock is a real winner. This 7th and final entry into the first series has a pair of world music-influenced bangers on it. The first tune is produced by Bounce Castle from Chicago and is primed for the dance floor with its Bollywood-flavoured vibes and big beats. It's a fresh take on a big tune from QB's Finest. And if you reverse it, fellow Chicagoan Altered Tapes mixes up a Cumbia slash dancehall slash breakbeat version of an iconic song from legendary Wu Tang album 36 Chambers.

Review: Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De Cotonou Dahomey were one of Nigerian's hardest hitting funk outfits. Now the French crew at Superfly reissue this super rare collection of some of the band's best work from the 70s and it is an essential collection of superb tunes, Each one is supremely powerful and dynamic thanks to the expert drumming, while psyched out keys add extra elements of magic. It's all pressed dot nice heavyweight vinyl that was made in Japan and is limited to just 1000 copies. 'Wodeka Roe' or the big hit 'Gbeti Madjro' are standouts among many gems.

I Believe In Miracles (reissue)
I Believe In Miracles (reissue) (yellow vinyl 7" limited to 300 copies Nachpressung)
Cat: SUN 7001YELLOW. Rel: 21 Dec 20
  1. I Believe In Miracles (3:56)
  2. I Believe In Miracles (instrumental) (3:58)
Review: Back in 2010 composer and Latin jazz specialist Claudio Passavanti put together a scaled-down ensemble of Latin musicians and percussionists to record a salsa cover version of the Jackson Sisters disco classic "I Believe In Miracles". The seven-inch single was a riproaring success, with jazz and Afro-Latin DJs around the world turning it into a bona fide scene anthem. Happily, Passavanti has decided to reissue it on red vinyl to celebrate the track's tenth birthday. It's a superb cover all told and, somewhat surprisingly, "I Believe In Miracles" actually works really well as a Salsa record. Full of fiery horns, sing-along, Boogaloo style vocals and infectious percussion, we actually prefer it to the over-played Jackson Sisters take. Recommended!

Review: Japanese label P-Vine sure know how to pick out the essential spiritual jazz reissues. This is another gold standard that came originally on Strata East in 1974. Vocals feature throughout and often soar to the highest of heights and make it a charismatic album. Sample hounds and hip hop lovers might well recognise the track 'Optimystical' which has been pillaged by Detroit great Andres before now. elsewhere there is real freeform magic on 'Music Is Nothing But A Prayer', cosmic exploration on 'Trace Of Trane' and heartwarming beauty on the closer 'Peace (Salaam)'.

Midnight In Havana (reissue) (white vinyl 7" limited to 200 copies)
Cat: OGR 799COLOUR. Rel: 04 Jan 21
  1. Midnight In Havana (5:18)
  2. Kinky Afro Cuban (4:53)
Review: Like all material released on Original Gravity, this tidy two-tracker from percussionist/band-leader Nestor Alvarezn and producer Neil Anderson sounds like it could have been recorded decades ago but is in fact brand new. It first appeared earlier in the year and has now been granted a second pressing, this time on coloured vinyl. A-side 'Midnight in Havana' is a heavyweight Afro-Cuban treat, with roaring horn lines and energetic organ lines leaping above a weighty, low-slung groove piled high with Latin percussion. The pair get cheeky on the flip, re-imagining Happy Mondays' classic 'Kinky Afro' in an easy listening salsa style, complete with bi-lingual lead vocals and sweltering trumpet solos.

Wamono A To Z Vol 1: Japanese Jazz Funk & Rare Groove 1968-1980 (reissue)
Cat: 180GWALP 01RE. Rel: 11 Sep 20
  1. Toshiko Yonekawa - "Soran Bushi" (2:45)
  2. Takeo Yamashita - "A Touch Of Japanese Tone" (4:21)
  3. Tadaaki Misago & Tokyo Cuban Boys - "Jongara Reggae" (3:38)

  9. Akira Ishikawa & Count Buffalo & The Jazz Rock Band - "The Sidewinder" (2:41)
  10. Masahiko Sato, Jiro Inagaki & Big Soul Media - "Sniper's Snooze" (6:42)
Review: Some compilations manage to both educate, inform and educate in equal measure; this fine collection from Japanese crate diggers DJ Yoshizawa Dynamite and Chintam is one such set. Comprising mostly little-known tracks recorded by Japanese artists between 1968 and '70, it offers up a wealth of cuts inspired by American jazz-funk "rare groove". There's much to admire across the ten tracks, from the mazy Rhodes solos, fizzing big band jazz grooves and traditional Eastern instrumentation of Toshiko Yonekawa's "Soran Bushi", and the languidly-slung brilliance of Tadaki Misago and Tokyo Cuban Boys' multi-faceted musical fusion "Jongara Reggae", to the Jimi Hendrix-goes-funk heaviness of "Incitation" by Monica Lassen & The Sounds, and the drums-driven dancefloor madness of Masahiko Sato Jiro Inagaki & Big Soul Media's "Sniper's Snooze". Recommended.

  3. MoBlack, Emmanuel Jal & Henrik Schwarz - "Chagu" (Henrik Schwarz version) (5:17)
  4. MoBlack, Emmanuel Jal & Henrik Schwarz - "Chagu" (MoBlack version) (7:16)
Review: Over the last three years, DJ/producer Mimmo "MoBlack" Falcone has turned MoBlack Records into arguably the World's leading label for African house music. Defected clearly thinks so, because the label has decided to put out this EP featuring tracks from remixes from Falcone and some of his regular collaborators. On side A Falcone joins forces with Armonica to deliver two sparkling, rubbery, positive and heavily electronic reworks of Fela Kuti classic 'International Thief Thief'. Both hit the spot, though it's the Dub, with its extended vocal breakdown and trippy effects, that floats our boat. Over on the flip we're treated to two versions of MoBlack, Emmanuel Jal and Henrick Schwarz hook-up 'Chagu': a bouncy Afro-tech take from Schwarz and a warmer, deep Afro-house interpretation by Falcone.

Hold On I'm A Comin'
Cat: MSR 024. Rel: 10 Dec 20
  1. Hold On I'm A Comin' (2:28)
  2. Comin' Home Baby (3:12)
Review: The two tracks showcased originally featured on two separate 1967 seven-inch singles by Fred Ramirez, a self-taught Latin-jazz musician and bandleader who had a passion for recording salsa, rumba and mambo-influenced covers of soul and funk hits of the day. Both records are extremely difficult to find these days, in part because collectors rarely part with their cherished copies. The A-side version of Sam & Dave classic 'Hold On, I'm Coming' is simply superb, with Ramirez new arrangement including ear-catching Latin percussion, rousing horns and fluid style piano solos. Over on the flip Ramirez and his band interpret 1960s jazz standard 'Coming Home Baby', delivering a version that sounds like a cross between gangster movie big-band jazz, and Ramsey Lewis classic 'Wade in the Water'. Ace!

  15. Tierney Malone & Geoffrey Muller - "Transmission For Jehn: Gnossienne No 1" (Exclusive Spoken Word Piece) (4:58)
Review: Khruangbin might be the most logical and fitting choice for a Late Night Tales compilation in recent memory. The Texan psychedelic chill artists have always had a sense of the exploratory and unknown running through their blissful grooves, and the fundamental idea behind this series was always about opening up doors to new musical discoveries for listeners.

In many ways, the Houston trio have gone above and beyond. Melding a breadth of sounds that have emerged from an equally diverse set of cultures, we visit Hindi-disco, South Korean rock, African bass, Belarusian folk. Capped off with an exclusive version of Kool & The Gang's 'Summer Madness' conceived by the compilers themselves, it's a case of 15 gateway tracks all of which belong to artists and genres that are crying out for you to dive in.

  2. Tabu Ley Rochereau - "Hafi Deo" (Nick The Record & Dan Tyler re-edit dub) (10:15)
Review: Edits in the hole! Two Afrofunk gems enjoy floor-primed refocuses: Steve Monite's Doing It In Lagos-featured "Only You" gets a little juice from Sofrito's Frankie Francis who really brings the bass out in proceedings. Meanwhile on the B Nick The Record and Idjut Boy Dan Tyler tweak the energy and sheen of Tabu Ley Rochereau's "Hafi Disco" as the drums are given a little more momentum and the chorus and horns are really brought to the centre of the action. Stunning.

Cat: KMPN 007. Rel: 18 Dec 20
  1. Hustle Do Brasil (Aroop Roy rework) (4:28)
  2. A Festa (Aroop Roy edit) (4:02)
Review: There's something special with these hush-hush reworks and re-edits as they breathe new life into dusty old Brazilian disco and boogie cuts. A-side 'Hustle Do Brazil' is a rambunctious, party-starting treat that turns a handful of loops from a piano-heavy South American disco record into a bouncy, disco-house slammer. He subtly switches tack on side B, delivering an edit of the deeper, smoother and jazzier 'A Festa', wisely prioritising his source material's spacey jazz-funk synths, heady party atmos, good grooves and even greater electric piano stabs. Samba-disco magic!

Review: Razor-N-Tape takes a look back to some of their classic material here and enlist some fine talents to remix it. Mysterious newcomer producer Demi Riquisimo takes care of the opener with a remix of Elia y Elizabeth's signature hit 'Alegria' that is brilliantly tropical and new age. Parisian Yuksek then also works the same tune into a lush mid tempo disco stomper. Reverse the 12" and you'll find Bostonian-come-Colombian BOSQ flipping 'Soy Una Nube' init a soul enriched banger and Baranquilla natives Vagabundo Club Socia close things out with some up tempo funk and precise drum work. The originals are also included for extra oomph.

Review: This stone cold slice of 7"s of funk comes all the way from Finland but takes you on a journey much further away. As the title suggests has some mad sitar action stitched into the raw and stuttering drum breaks on the A-side. It's a bristling groove to inject any floor with energy and worldly goodness. On the flip is 'Practise Witchcraft,' a more deep, slow moving groove that brings some psyched out sounds and a late night sense of playful soul. This one is limited to 250 copies so move fast.

Review: Hallelujah Chicken Band are said to be the band that modernised Zimbabwean music, in turn revolutionising the music industry in their country. The collective first formed when a young trumpet player, Daram Karanga, offered to put together some musicians to entertain workers at a local copper mine. The collective's reputation soon grew even as the line-up continued to change and now this heavyweight reissue Take One pulls together all of their biggest hits. There are also some rare cuts recorded between 1974 and 1979 including, and all have been remastered from original tapes and vinyl sources for the first time since the 1970s.

Review: James Gallardo & Sol released their collaborative debut album in 1975 in a burst of bright colour and next-level musicianship. There's a fiery, rockist spirit running through the over driven guitar cartwheeling through "Maranatha", but there's equal space for measured grooves and Gallardo's expressive horn playing. Mellower moments like "Patrice" let in a more soulful side of the project, while "El Que Se Fue" nods to the Latin roots of Sol. Expansive, bold and inventive, this is a treasure for jazz funk heads, marking the first official repress since the first copies slipped out many moons ago.

Review: On its initial release a decade ago in 2007, Arthur Verocai's Encore - the Brazilian artist's belated follow-up to his obscure, eponymous 1972 debut album - was hailed as something of a modern classic. 10 years on, the set has lost none of its breezy sparkle, as this re-mastered vinyl reissue proves. It features a mixture of samba, jazz-funk and bossanova songs, with featured players including many of those who played on 1972's Arthur Verocai (Azymuth being the best-known to European and American audiences). The production, courtesy of Harmonic 313 member Dave Brinkworth, is superb, too; so sympathetic is it to Verocai's original 1970s style, in fact, that it could have been recorded at the same time as his now acclaimed debut. If you missed out first time round, this should be essential listening.

  2. Grupo Amigos - "La Gir Del Diablo" (3:25)
Review: The debut release from the freshly-minted Discodelic label offers up two exceedingly rare - and rather fine - "funky Latin" cover versions from the glory years of hallucinatory funk and soul. Side A sports Via Libre's flash-fried samba-funk cover of Marcos Valle's "Chi Chi Mentira", a heady re-imagination rich in Hammond organ stabs, undulating Latin percussion, groovy bass and a percussive middle section just tailor-made for DJs who like doubling up breaks. Over on the fiip you'll find something even heavier: Grupo Amigos' celebratory, organ-heavy funk-rock take on Trio Ternura's "La Gir Del Diablo", a song that was later famously turned into an international hit by Astrud Gilberto as "Black Magic (A Gira)".

Review: This official reissue of Arthur Verocai's classic self-titled album from 1972 sounds very much like the epitome of a labour of love for Mr Bongo. The press release states the Brighton-based jazz funk archivalists have had this album on top of their reissue hitlist and with the permission of Sir Arthur himself have come through with this official vinyl reissue in newly remastered form from the original Continental master tapes. Do we need to set the scene for this masterclass in long players from Verocai? The ten tracks bristle with sonic fusion, transcending genre to become something more than Brazilian jazz funk across its sublime 29 minutes. Alongside contributing musicians, Verocai invites the listener on a journey through Bossa nova, samba, jazz, MPB, psychedelics and funk. Tip!

Review: Dynamite Cuts lives up to its name with this limited 7" from acclaimed Brazilian jazz singer Tania Maria. Two driving and dancey tracks pressed nice and loud for the first time on 45, "Fio Maravilha" is a busy arrangement made up of wild piano, big raw drums and Maria's impassioned, lung-emptying singing that whizzes along at pace. "Bedeu" has a little more Latin flavour, bossa nova swagger and space in the mix for the soul to shine through. Drop either one and take shelter, cause both of these cuts are bombs.

Onde Anda O Meu Amor
Cat: BRZ45 082. Rel: 04 Dec 20
  1. Onde Anda O Meu Amor (3:44)
  2. Gueri-Gueri (4:19)
Review: Following persistent requests, Mr Bongo has finally relented and dedicated an edition of their popular Brazil 45s series to Orlandivo Honorio de Souza, a composer, singer and percussionist whose 1977 album Oelandivo remains high on my collectors' wants-lists. Wisely, their A-side pick is 'Onde Anda O Meu Amore', a cosmic and spacey fusion of samba-soul and jazz-funk rich in ethereal flute lines and intergalactic keys. This time round it comes backed by the equally as impressive 'Gueri Gueri', an insatiable samba-rock number wrapped in heady accordion, jangly acoustic guitar and punchy horn sounds.

Review: Brazilian songwriter Milton Nascimento has a remarkable catalogue behind him, beginning in the late 60s and running continuously since. Originally released alongside the recently repressed Maria Maria, here the 2002 album Ultimo Trem (Last Train) stands on its own as a startlingly beautiful body of work steeped in Brazilian folk. There are tracks that drift through scenes with expressive ease, such as the spellbinding acoustic suite "A Viagem". The haunting grace of "A Lua Girou" will stay with you long after the last note plays, and so runs an album packed throughout with such moments.

Review: Since its release in 1999, Tony Allen's Black Voices album has earned a reputation as an overlooked modern classic. While a scaled-down reissue appeared on Kindred Spirits in 2014, this edition marks the first "full repress" of the original double-album version. The Doctor L-produced set remains hugely alluring, thanks largely to the warm and attractive mixture of Allen's loose and languid Afrobeat rhythms, fluid jazz and jazz-funk instrumentation and vocals that recall the legendary drummer's work with Fela Kuti. Like the original set, you'll find a number of tasty dancefloor reworks nestled on the second disc, with the fuzzy and disco-fied PsychojujuMix of "Ariya" - complete with rubbery bass and sweaty drum solos - standing out.

A high chief and Kenyan diplomat who allegedly refuses to discuss his music, he self-released eight albums in the 70s and 80s and these are some of the many highlights. Stretching from the New York-influenced post-punk synth funk of "Good Name" to the most authentic Afro fusion of "Why Go To War", Onyeabor's range not only reflects his clear creative skill, but also the ever-developing international language of music during the fruitful period he was active. Who is William Onyeabor? Press play and find out yourselves...

If you know the album, you'll know just how good these picks are. Ranging from Larry Heard's recent hypnotic uplift "Burning 4 U" to the ambient cosmic stew of Mappa Mundi's star gazing "Trance Fusion" via the Mali soul funk of Boncana Maiga and beguiling Portuguese contemporary classical from Carlos Maria Trindade, this is a revealing slice of one of this year's best compilations so far.

Review: Favorite Recordings latest release takes us back to 1977 via a new edition of Mexican jazz-funk-fusion outfit Sacbe's self-titled debut LP. For those unfamiliar with the album's charms - and let's face it, that's most of us - it offers a vibrant, colourful blend of dazzling jazz musicianship (think extended electric piano solos, mazy Clarinet lines, punchy trumpet and evocative sax), heady jazz-funk grooves and lashings of additional tropical percussion. Highlights include the hot-to-trot double bass solos and deep chords of 'Androneda', the endlessly evocative and deliciously sun-kissed title track, the laidback bliss of 'Page' and the heavyweight goodness of 'Caribe'.

  3. The Obeah Man Rhythm (3:23)
Review: On this surprise 7" edition of Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell's unofficial Edits & Overdubs series of releases, the long-serving New York producer turns his attention to Exuma's 'The Obeah Man', a heavily percussive, Afro-fired slab of rhythm and blues/folk-rock fusion that was once an anthem at David Mancuso's Loft parties. Claussell's 'Part One' rework somehow seems even more urgent, percussive and life-affirming than Exuma's original version, and the 'Part 2' version - an unashamedly sweaty, drum-heavy interpretation - most certainly is. Possibly best of all - for plays in house sets, at least - is the 'Obeah Man Rhythm' version, which is a loopy, percussive beast. You may need to go for a little lie down after playing it - we did!

Once again finding new ways to collide hard rock and West African funk, first up is 'Come Inside', which has been a firm favourite in his live shows and is a collaboration with bassist JP Maramba that's full of fierce energy. Reeves it and you'll get a psyched out cover of Fela Kuti's 'Sorrow Tears & Blood' with a hooky groovy and powerful underlying message.

It is part of an exclusive licensing agreement with legendary record label Albarika Store, which was responsible for defining the sound of Benin, West Africa and beyond. This super rare 7" from 1978 kicks off with a sizzling sixteen minute epic, filled with organic percussion and lively poly-rhythms. Dynamic, fresh and impossible not to dance to, it's backed with two more gems on the flip.

Here he offers up another compilation, this time showcasing tried-and-tested tracks that have been rocking his DJ sets for the last few years. Mostly focused around club-friendly global sounds past and present, the 17-track selection is full of little known killers, overlooked dancefloor workouts and forgotten gems. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from the horn-sporting boogie-zouk bounce of Evasion 85's "Van La Ka Vante" and the cheeky "Rappers Delight" re-write "Bon Tempos" by Equipe Radio Cidade, to the sparkling Afro-disco heat of Eko Roosevelt Louis' "Tondoho Mba" and the righteous Afro-Brazilian drum workout that is Alma Luma's "Princesa Isabel".

Review: Oumou Sangare took an eight year break from music before making a fine return in 2017 with her Mogoya album. It was a fresh update on her melancholic West African styles and was followed by a fine remix album,. Not it is followed by another version, this time recorded with a small band in a French studio. It might be the best version yet with authentic feelings, low frills production style and trilling guitars and jazzy chords that transport you to another world. The interplay between the vocals and instrumentals is a thing of beauty.

Even if you don't know it by name, Moreira's "Celebration Suite" should be instantly familiar, a jazz-fusion/samba batucada anthem that truly lives up its joyous name!! Review: For the latest volume in their crate-digging disco series, Under The Influence, Z Records has turned to long-serving British brothers Simon and Robin Lee AKA Faze Action. In keeping with the series' dusty-fingered ethos, there's plenty of brilliant rarities to set the pulse racing - see the smooth '80s boogie of Leston Paul's "All Nite Tonight", the up-tempo hustle of Oscar Perry's "Body Movements" - as well as a smattering of obscure versions of classic dancefloor hits (check Michele Claire's version of "In The Bush"). You'll also find a smattering of killer Faze Action edits, too, with their version of Midway's "Set It Out" and Mikki's freestyle-era boogie ham "Dance Lover" standing out.

Review: Insane boogie fire from Rio circa 82; both Robson Jorge and Lincoln Olivetti were already decorated before they joined forces, but this one took both of their reputations and amplified them beyond expectation. Their one and only album, it's loaded with soul and funk from every corner of Brazil's sexy city and brought together with beautiful attention to detail; the gradual vocal breakdowns, rude synths and lavish instrumental sections, key cuts such as the Wonder-level "Aleluia", the jazz slides and glides of "Pret-A-Porter" and the sexy 80s electro boogie "Squash" will still completely flip any party 35 years later. Stunning.

Review: The Brazilian disco and boogie scene of the late '70s and early '80s has been in the spotlight of late, with several labels releasing celebratory compilations of killer material. Here, Athens of the North get in on the act, re-issuing Painel De Controle's relaxed, jazz-funk influenced jam "Relax", a single B-side and album track originally released in 1979. Like many of the greatest Brazilian disco/boogie records of the period, it's loose, lovely and really rather sumptuous, inviting you to dance while offering a saucer-eyed hug with arms outstretched. Flip for the less celebrated, but no less potent, 1978 cut "Malandrinha", a bossa-tinged number that's almost unfeasibly sunny.
