Deep House
  1. Aurora (Mare) (4:27)
  2. Aurora (Terra) (5:21)
  3. Aurora (Cielo) (5:23)
Review: Aurora's superb self-titled EP was originally put out back in 1994. It is instrumental deep house of the highest order and comes as three different mixes for different moments in the night. 'Aurora (Mare)' is first and is doused in brilliant Balearic vibes and Italo melodies. The drums hit nicely while the pads take you head up to the stars. 'Aurora (Terra)' then comes on a little stronger with some of the textured stripped put and thereat taking centre stage next to the keys, then 'Aurora (Cielo)' is a perfectly heavenly sound to close out.

  1. Slowhand (10:21)
  2. Tall For His Height (5:17)
  3. Kez (7:15)
Review: Seminal reissue alert! Baby Ford had already been a chart-baiting acid house superstar by the time he launched the PAL SL label in 1996. He'd left behind the major label scene and moved firmly back into the underground with exploratory techno releases on Ifach and collaborations with Mark Broom. This new label marked a shift for Ford though, setting him up for the trips into minimalist club tracks that have been his bread and butter for decades now. From the machine soul trysts of "Slow Hand" to the woozy techno thrust of "Tall For His Height" and the atmospheric house wriggle of "Kez", this release is a classic through and through. Beat the sharks and nab a copy of this long out-of-print gem.

The Altered States EP
Cat: GR 1222. Rel: 03 Oct 17
Deep House
  1. Philadelphia (6:36)
  2. Drumadelphia (1:58)
  3. New Jersey Deep (4:40)
  4. Varrio (SOS) (2:46)
Review: It was way back in 1994 when the Black Science Orchestra - AKA Ashley Beedle, Uschi Classen and Marc Woolford - first released the Altered States EP. As this timely reissue on Groovin' proves, it remains a benchmark of British deep house. The EP is arguably most famous for the Wood, Brass & Steel-sampling brilliance of "New Jersey Deep" - a track that should reside in any house-head's collection - though the similarly-minded laidback positivity of "Philadelphia" (whose swinging drums, toasty electric piano chords and rising synthesized horns pay hearty tribute to Philly Soul) pushes it close. The EP also includes a tasty "Drumadelphia" version of the latter track for DJs who like to play around with percussion, while "Vario (SOS)" is an organ-rich trip into hazy lounge music territory.

Never Come Back (Four Tet/Morgan Geist remixes)
Cat: SLANG 50298. Rel: 31 Jul 20
Deep House
  1. Never Come Back (Four Tet remix) (7:57)
  2. Never Come Back (Morgan Geist remix) (7:25)
Review: When Caribou, Four Tet and Morgan Geist appear on the same 12", you know it's going to be huge. And it is. First up, Kieran Hebdan takes "Never Come Back" and warps the bass, builds plenty of tense percussive energy and layers in some sci-fi synths that take the track into the next dimension. It's epic, as is always the way with Hebden, and ripe for some rave reactions. Cult neo-disco innovator Morgan Geist does something completely different - his drums skip and ping, with a breathy and soul drenched vocal next to lush cosmic chords. It's bouncy, playful, brilliant.

Review: Don Carlos will always be best known as the legendary Italian producer behind the enduring Balearic and Italo/dream house classic 'Alone' which was, rather impressively, his first ever release. Here we get to hear some of his favourite tunes on another vital volume of this series from his longtime home label Irma Records. All the tracks on this essential double pack have been re-edited by Don Carlos himself, especially for this occasion with highlights from the likes of Deep Aural Penetration, Love Nation and Outdance.

Ciao Lee Tong EP
Cat: MI 71001. Rel: 15 Jun 22
Deep House
  1. Session (5:26)
  2. Dance Fusion (5:11)
  3. Deep In My Heart (5:04)
  4. Underground Station (5:03)
Review: Here comes a curio from the heady early 90s rush of house music. Music Institute Records was a low-key affair which ran from 1993 to 1999, with no particularly recognisable names amongst their repertoire, but the label started with a hand-stamped joint from Ciao Lee Tong, a project credited to Marco Funari. Plenty rare and now incredibly desirable amongst collectors, this four track EP has the plucky DIY spirit of an early 90s house release - raw and unpolished, but with all the right moves to get a party rocking. 'Session' is the gem which opens the EP in a cascade of psychedelic synth tones and tough Lately bass, while 'Dance Fusion' has a cheekier, Detroit-leaning swerve to it. 'Deep In My Heart' features some tricksy programming and a boxjammed Latin flavour, while 'Underground Station' takes it good and deep to round out this highly prized slice from a hidden pocket of house music history.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged, but otherwise in excellent condition***

Banana Hill is a genre hopping club, DJ duo (JVC & Cervo) and record label founded in Manchester, 2010. Afrocentric, global dancefloor sounds of the past, present and future by the likes of Moroccan legend Majid Bekkas, XOA & Contours and Jinku have been previously featured. This new one by local producer Clay shows a breadth of dancefloor influences spanning broken beat like on 'People Floating', classic '90s house as heard on 'Shapes' (Dreaming mix) and the neon-lit night drive of 'Up There' heading into nu-disco territory.

Review: It would be fair to say that C.M Toni is not one of 4 Hero man Marc Mac's best-known aliases. It was originally a pseudonym he used in the early '90s when delivering smooth, slick and warm house tracks - cuts that were very different from the hardcore and proto-jungle he was renowned for at the time - and it was only ever utilised on one obscure 12" single. This must-check 12" showcases six tracks he recorded for the project in 1993, but for one reason or another were not released at the time. There's much to savour, from the organ-rich, New Jersey-goes-to-Dollis Hill swing of 'Like it Hot', the deliciously deep, Mood II Swing style 'Oh So Special', 'Feelin' Jazzy' and the piano-rich brilliance of 'Rock U All Nite'.

Review: The album that started it all for Daft Punk sure explains why they were one of the biggest acts in dance music for so long. Even now, all these years later, it is still a mind blowing work that blew electonic music wide open. Homework landed in 1997 and showcased astonishing production skills, a dizzyingly wide-array of influences and spawned plenty of stone cold dance classics such as 'Around The World,' 'Da Funk' and 'Teachers' which shouted out all of the French duo's biggest influences.

Review: French game-changers Daft Punk's tours are always some of the most iconic in all of dance music. They took the band around the world at the height of their powers and in 1997 they dropped a live recording from one of the shows in Birmingham on November 8th. It contains a 45-minute excerpt of recorded during Daftendirektour which the band themselves said was one of their favourite ever live gigs. Plenty of their biggest hits of the time make the cut such as Homework cuts like 'Da Funk', 'Rollin' & Scratchin'', 'Revolution 909' and 'Alive' but they all sound vastly different when played live.

  2. Gabriel (Tamborine dub) (7:13)
  3. Gabriel (live Garage) (7:25)
  4. Gabriel (Words To Give By) (7:22)
Review: Is there a more positive, soulful and life-affirming dancefloor anthem out there than Roy Davis Jr and Peven Everett's 1996 jam "Gabriel"? As many will be aware, it has long been sought of as a classic, with soulful house, deep house, US and UK garage DJs all championing it back in the day. This white vinyl reissue boasts all of the mixes featured on the original 12". Perhaps the most famous version is the rolling, bass-heavy two-step flex of the "Live Garage" mix that opens side B, but there's plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere. The driving, jazzy-but-stomping "Words To Give By" version has been annoyingly overlooked over the years, while the "Tambourine Dub" is deliciously sweaty and driving in the best possible way.

Review: In the 27 years since Delicious Inc's 'Eau De Chante' first slipped out on Underground Music Movement (U.M.M), the E.P has become an in-demand item amongst house DJs. This latest reissue, then, is very welcome. Stripped-back, bumpin' and bass-heavy, it sits somewhere between the masculine funk of Murk, the muscular thump of Sound Factory-era Junior Vasquez, and the rolling swing of Chicago house. The sassy, spoken female vocal comes to the fore on "Eau De Chante (For Men)" and "Eu De Chante (For Sex)", the latter of which is built around woozy loops and a more thrusting, analogue-sounding bassline. There's also a killer 'For Beats' version for those DJs who like to get busy in the mix.

  1. The Whistle Song (Cinthie remix) (6:36)
  2. The Whistle Song (Re-directed) (8:04)
Review: The latest release from Director's Cut, the late, great Frankie Knuckles collaboration with long-time studio companion Eric Kupper, offers two fresh remixes of one of the Godfather of House's greatest moments, 1991's 'The Whistle Song' (itself a Kupper compositon, fact fans). Cinthie does a superb job with her A-side remix, re-inventing the track as an immersive, saucer-eyed slab of rushing piano house that just oozes emotion from start to finish. By the time she introduces the track's famous whistling synthesizer melody, you'll be happily lost in the music. Over on the flip you'll find Kupper's 'Redirected' revision, which naturally makes much more of the whistling lead line and the colourful chords and counter melodies he and Knuckles promoted on the Director's Cut project. Fine versions of a classic cut... don't sleep!

Review: In 2009, longtime collaborators Frankie Knuckles and Eric Kupper made their production partnership official via the Director's Cut project. This epic retrospective gathers together the best tracks and remixes the duo completed prior to Knuckles' death in 2014. Disc one offers up original productions, including ear-catching re-makes of some of Knuckles' most famous early works (we're particularly fond of the versions of "The Whistle Song", "Your Love" and "I'll Take U There"). On the second disc you'll find the best of their remix work, with standouts including a sublime take on Candi Staton's "Hallelujah Anyway" and a storming, previously unreleased version of Lou Rawls' "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine". As a bonus, the third disc mixes the best of the lot together in one suitably gorgeous, non-stop journey.

Review: When it first appeared on Dutch label Djax-Up Beats way back in 1994, Glenn Underground's third single, 'The Unborn', was warmly received. Listening back to the record via this Groovin' Italy reissue, it's easy to see why. Like his other releases of the period, it strikes a perfect balance between energy-packed, techno-influenced intensity and the melodious deep house sound he'd later become famous for. Check first the frankly filthy title track, a jacking, TB-303 and TR-909-driven slab of mind-altering peak-time insanity, before admiring the luscious deep house/Motor City techno fusion of 'Tek-Na-Logie'. '101 Dolomations' is a smooth but jacking Detroit techno mutation marked out by rising and falling electronic motifs, while closing cut 'New Age Experience' sounds like a Chicagoan's take on the Burrell Brothers' early '90s Nu Groove productions.

Review: As much love has already been given to Larry Heard's late '80s and early '90s work, it's nice to see some of the Chicagoan's slightly later work getting a deserved reissue. Alien first surfaced on Black Market International back in 1996, and finds Heard exploring his sci-fi influences in a range of deep and emotive styles. So, there are forays into blunted hip-hop ("The Beauty of Celeste"), twinkling, starburst ambience ("Faint Object Detection", "The Dance of Planet X") and Detroit techno-influenced melodic downtempo beats ("DNA-RNA"), as well as occasional moments of typically immersive deep house warmth (the wonderful "Flight of the Comet"). In other words, it's a trip into space in the company of one of electronic music's finest exponents of melodic richness.

Review: Gerd's archival Frame of Mind label continues to offer up reissues of sought-after European techno classics from the turn of the '90s. The latest 12" to get the repress treatment is Dave Campbell's second outing as Hi-Ryze, 1990 EP "Cyberia". Of the two versions of the Motor City-inspired "Cyberia" that are on offer, it's arguably the heavier, stripped-back "Lo-Pass Mix" that resonates most, though many will be attracted to the rave style stabs and crazy drum edits of the "Midi Edit". "After The Flood" is available in two variations, too: the filthy, bleep and bass-influenced sleaze of the "Harmo Bass Mix" and the rush-inducing chords and melodies of the "Optimistic Mix".

  3. Groove Box
  4. The Stranger
Review: First released way back in 1997, The Jazz Republic was one of the late, great Mike Huckaby's earliest EPs a sublime collection of hazy and warming Detroit deep house and techno jams tailor made for losing yourself in at four in the morning. Original vinyl copies have long been hard to come by on the second-hand market, so this 25th anniversary edition will be an essential purchase for many DJs. On the A-side, sumptuous, early morning deep house wonder 'The Jazz Republic' comes paired with the mind-altering, stargazing techno hypnotism of 'Jazz Delirium', while on the flip, the piano-smothered bumpin' loveliness of 'Groove Box' is followed by the driving, disco-sampling deep house loop jam 'The Stranger'. An impeccable classic!

  7. Ramjac Corporation - "Keep On Turning On" (2:43)
  8. Irresistible Force - "Finale" (8:50)
Review: Here's a genuine slice of history: a rare recording of a live jam from ambient techno explorers The Irresistible Force (AKA legendary chill-out room DJ and shiny space suit enthusiast Mixmaster Morris) and Ramjac Corporation (AKA Paul Chivers), which took place at gallery, shop and intimate acid house venue The Brain in Soho, way back in September 1990. It's a brilliant time capsule of a time when the template of ambient techno was yet to be fully fleshed out and sees the two performers take it in turns to combine immersive ambient synth sounds and hallucinatory electronics with oddball samples and, more significantly, basslines and drum machine rhythms inspired by the Chicago House and UK mutations of Detroit techno. An important and entertaining musical time capsule.

  4. Deetron - "V-NRG" (5:07)
Review: Few labels have been as definitive for house music as Nu Groove, and now they tap up a pair of artists who have also done their far share to shape the genre at large. On one side is American mainstay Jovonn, who offers a spritely tune in 'Random' with skipping drums and edgy chords, while 'Get Over It' (Soulfrican Soul Bass dub mix) is a more warm and heady tune for cosy back rooms. On the flip, Swiss craftsman Deetron offers some peak time tackle with the big piano chords and incendiary hi hats of 'Dr Melonball' while 'V-NRG' brings some jacking old school disco sweat to close out a useful EP.

Review: Chicago's dance music history isn't exactly short of legends, but Spencer Kincy has to be one of the most enigmatic. Beyond his well documented struggles in life, his music beguiles and surprises in the way truly innovative house should, and that comes through in abundance on this reissue of a mystery joint from somewhere around the 1996 mark. There's a techier slant to tracks like 'Ginko B', especially compared to some of Kincy's best known work as Gemini, but it's still fizzing with an angular flair that could only come from one as funky as him. Just drop into the bubbling, melodious joy of 'Moodz' and let his inimitable sound take you away.

  5. Rydim #2 (18 & Under (Aah)) (6:47)
Review: Way back in 1990, dub-loving deep house producer Bobby Konders joined forces with fellow NYC house artists Peter Daou and Boyd Jarvis as Rydim. Here the outfit's sole 12", which initially appeared on the legendary Nu Groove imprint, is finally reissued courtesy of Italian label Groovin'. It's full of timeless, bass-heavy deep house, with highlights including the chiming melodies, dreamy chords and chunky grooves of ''Rydim #1: Mello', the organ-sporting after-hours beauty of 'Rydim #1: Deep & Nice', the proto-house-goes-deep house haziness of 'Rydim #2 (version)' and the sparse, faintly foreboding throb of the pleasingly squelchy, intoxicating 'Rydim #2: 18 and Under (Aah)'.

  2. Where Love Lives (Mo' Knuckles mix) (5:57)
  3. Where Love Lives (cut To The Bone mix) (5:05)
Review: Alison Limerick's 'Where Love Lives' is the sound of a generation, a reminder of one of the most vital cultural movements of the last 100 years. It is a perma-hit that unites all ages, colours and creeds, even now, 30 years after it first got hands in the air and tears in the eyes on dance floors of cult clubs around the world. To mark the occasion it gets a special remaster treatment and 12" release for Record Store Day. The Classic Mix - which is still the best - kicks off, followed by a big piano version from Mo Knuckles and a darker, more stripped back Cut To The Bone mix.

Review: Four smacking deep house cuts from Enrico Mantini, whose nostalgia-tinged glasses are cast all the way back to 1992, when the bulk of his 'unreleased gems' were produced. All set to tape and nearly forgotten, the vibe of these bits is unparalleled, recalling the rough n' readiness of our two favourite Todds, Terry and Edwards. 'U Feel It' waterfalls through resampled soul sample cut-ups, while 'Loca' continues to bubble outwards via a restrained organ and 808 hue. Sexy, Mr. Fingery styled basses ensue on the cloudier 'Life Wine', while 'Can't Take' closes on dubbier and grottier territories.

Review: First released way back in 1992, Stefano Curti, Mauro Tamino and Stefano De Carlo's first 12" as Minimal Vision (they'd previously released numerous as The True Underground Sound of Rome) remains one of the classiest and most ear-pleasing Italian deep house records of all time. For proof, check 'Magic Staircase', where picturesque synthesizer melodies rise and fall atop skittish beats, 'Pacific' style chords and a chunky Korg M1 bassline, and the bleep-sporting Chicago deep house tribute 'Prelude'. Those searching for something a little more energetic should take a listen to the warm and beautiful 'Milky Way' and 'Night of Love', whose programmed percussion, fizzing synth solos and jaunty bassline doff a cap to Detroit tech-jazz.

Review: Mission Control executively command their fleet to reissue this classic that they themselves beamed into existence all the way back in 1990. A deep house 'classic' by every stretch, 'Outta Limits' is an airy, strict and futuristic soul-sampling groover, positing a very simple question: "can you let your heart pump you?" Aldo Hernandex and Ralph Falcon, the two commanders at the controls here - have more than ensured it sounds old and new in equal measure, big thanks to a new remastering job. Clock the 'Frog Mix' on the B too: womping, clippy, dry.

Review: During the late 1990s, Japanese producer Yuji Takanouchi produced a trio of sublime EPs, most of which went largely overlooked at the time. He surprisingly returned to action a few years ago with a handful of similarly dreamy, loved-up productions, prompting R&S offshoot Apollo Records - who famously released his peerless ambient house 12", Southern Paradise, in 1997 - to put together this superb compilation. The genius of his productions, whether dancefloor leaning or more horizontal in ethos, always lay in the hazy colourfulness of his synthesizer melodies and life-affirming chord progressions. It's those traits, coupled with his firm grasp of deep house and intelligent techno aesthetics, which shine through on Brand New Day. "Pacific Jazz", "Nite" and "Ocean In Heaven", in particular, are stunning.

Review: The Nightcrawlers' tune 'Push The Feeling On' is one of US garages most iconic. It was a hit on dance floors and in the charts all over the western world and was also what lay the foundations for MK's whole career. The dub version he served up became a signature sound for the producer throughout the 90s and beyond. That original 95 mix is included here and has the yearning vocals pacing about the mix, the snappy hits and warm, fat drums rolling down low. A Revisited version tweaks things only slightly and the Dub of Doom version is the most chunky and paired back of the lot with a slightly dark sense of menace pervading the whole affair.

Review: It is undeniably one of the most iconic house tracks of all time: 'The Nervous Track' by Masters At Work Present Nu Yorican Soul is an exquisite coming together of MAW's deep musical heritage, Latin roots and majestic studio skills. It first landed in 1993 and its deep bass, rich bass and expressive percussion all made an immediate impact. Here presented on limited edition yellow vinyl, it comes with various mixes that highlight different aspects of the arrangement. The Horny Mix is fun, the Yellow Mix is more dreamy, but the Ballsy Mix remains a firm favourite.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged, but otherwise in excellent condition***

As part of their 15th anniversary celebrations, Sushitech has decided to reissue Mosaic Classics, a 2008 collection of late 1990s works from legendary British techno producer Steve O'Sullivan, this time on clear vinyl. If you missed out first time around, it's well worth picking up. Check first the early British tech-house-goes-dub-techno hypnotism of 'Cheques Not Accepted', before admiring the sub-heavy late-night skank of 'Touch Up' and the bongo-rich pleasantness of deep techno roller 'Breezer' (itself a collaboration with John Beer'). Also worth a listen is the chunkier and sweater - but nevertheless spacey - 'No Suzuki', which was originally released under the Blue Spirit alias, and the pumping, stargazing thump of 'Sac Magique' (as Wise Caucasian).
