Botanic Minds Sunset Series
Botanic Minds Sunset Series (limted 180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: BMSS 008. Rel: 27 Jul 20
  1. Track001A (8:04)
  2. Track002A (Lizz remix) (8:00)
  3. Track001B (8:18)
  4. Track002B (Barut remix) (7:47)
Review: The mystery of the Botanic Minds Sunset Series continues to unfold with another bout of surreal and sensual club tracks that balance tweaked minimalism with a warm and hazy atmosphere. "Track001A" is packed with intricate rhythmic interplay, but it's the fluttering guitar licks and displaced vocals that give the piece its unique vibe. "Track002A" is a remix credited to Eastenderz regular Lizz, and it's a particularly spellbinding jam shaped out with lingering chords and a wistful mood. "Track001B" hunkers down around a low, throbbing bassline, but there's some sweet keys hovering up top to keep things from getting too dark. Barut is on hand with a remix for "Track002B", where trancey undercurrents meet with expansive piano and ethereal ambient swells, all strapped to a sturdy minimal house groove.

Nuances De Nuit Vol 4
Nuances De Nuit Vol 4 (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: NUIT 004. Rel: 27 Jul 20
  1. Liquid Earth - "X-Form" (6:54)
  2. Huerta - "Legwork" (5:19)
  3. DJOKO - "Copyrighted" (5:55)
  4. T Jacques - "Voyetra" (6:18)
Review: The latest collection of wayward floor heaters from Nuances De Nuit takes us once more into a colourful headspace where the possibilities are wide open to make house music with personality. Californian shining star Liquid Earth is up first, although he's better known as Urulu. 'X-Form' is a bubbling metropolis of futuristic synth squiggles with starry-eyed wonder in its heart and vintage techno smarts up top. Huerta follows up that sterling start with the enchanting electro incantations of 'Legwork', which build wonderfully on the sound laid out on his recent debut album for Voyage Recordings. On the flip, DJOKO brings a smart shuffle and some shimmering synth work to the forefront for a seriously smart twist on the tech house template, while T. Jacques opts for space age machine funk with a splash of boogie poured in for good measure.

CB 015
CB 015 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: CB 015. Rel: 27 Jul 20
  1. Pascal Benjamin - "Falkhill" (8:04)
  2. Michael James & Benjamin Joseph - "The Island" (7:53)
  3. TIJN - "Maybe" (5:52)
  4. Nick Beringer - "Nyx" (6:32)
Review: The next airdrop from the good ship Constant Black is a various artists affair with four tracks from four artists guaranteed to find a home in your extended micro sesh. Pascal Benjamin takes the lead with "Falkhill", locking into a Romanian-flavoured minimal breaks formation that rolls in resplendent fashion with a particularly choice vocal lick from an undisclosed RnB track. Michael James and Benjamin Joseph nudge the pitch fader up and dial in the swing for the decidedly funky wiggler "The Island", and TIJN keeps things bumping but works in some sharper drum sounds for the tough but bouncy "Maybe". Nick Beringer finishes the record off with the chunky funk of "Nyx", calling to mind Mike Shannon amongst others.

The Age Of Love (remix & original)
Cat: REN 250001VWHITE. Rel: 27 Jul 20
  1. The Age Of Love (Solomun Renaissance remix) (8:13)
  2. The Age Of Love (Jam & Spoon Watch Out For Stella mix) (6:49)
Review: Shockingly, it's been 30 years since the Age of Love's eponymous debut first started ripping up dancefloors. Made by a pair of veteran Italian producers, the original 1990 version cannily combined the kind of dreamy, new age style melodic themes that were then dominating Italian house, with a bombastic, techno inspired groove that bore all of the hallmarks of the style that would become known as trance. This 30th anniversary reissue omits that original version, instead pairing Jam & Spoon's brilliant, mind-altering 1992 "Mix for Stella" version - a proto-trance classic that has been reissued numerous times since - with Solomun's heady, piano-sporting 2017 tech-house re-make. The latter incorporates many of the track's most familiar elements whilst giving it a new 21st century groove.

Senator Bongwater vs Seafoam
Cat: LMK 004. Rel: 30 Jul 20
  1. Seafoam - "Machines" (5:34)
  2. Seafoam - "Fort A" (7:27)
  3. Senator Bongwater - "Spastic Orgasmic" (6:33)
  4. Senator Bongwater - "Zoot Trooper" (6:52)
Review: This superb split from Lemak gently sweeps you off your feet with the delicate percussion and airy pads of "Machines." by Seafoam, real name Brian Cavender. He's an artist with a back cat dating to the late nighties and including credits on Guidance, so oozes authenticity. His second offering "Fort A" is more techno leaning, with scintillating percussion and marching laser synths. Senator Bongwater is Urulu, aka Taylor Freels, aka Liquid Earth, a real master of minimal house and tech whatever alias he assumes. "Spastic Orgasmic" is another spaced out tech trip, while "Zoot Trooper" is a flurry of fantastic astral breaks.

Default: Various Artists (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: DFLT 003. Rel: 27 Jul 20
  1. Exander - "Enigma" (7:12)
  2. Chad Andrew - "Elemental" (7:31)
  3. Cerec - "Shinobi" (7:28)
  4. Avidel - "Aguamenti" (8:05)
Review: Default strides with confidence into its third release with a cast of underground operators orbiting what might once have been called the minimal scene. Label boss Exander is up first with the warm and throbbing "Enigma", while Chad Andrew makes a welcome return after many years of silence with the smooth and undulating "Elemental". Cerec gets a little bouncy and trippy with the melodically adventurous "Shinobi", and Avidel keeps things neat and tidy with the pitter-patter percussion and pin-point lead lines of "Aguamenti". If you're seeking out refined, musical tech house suited to extended dancefloor sessions, this is just the record for you.

Tolerance EP (remastered)
Cat: 267WS 75133. Rel: 25 Jul 20
  1. French (5:44)
  2. IL (6:36)
  3. 111 (4:57)
Review: Before making his name as St Germain, French producer Ludovic Navarre released music under a number of other aliases. One of these was Deepside, originally a 1992 collaboration with Sub System partner Guy Rabiller that quickly became a Navarre solo project. The "Tolerance EP" (1993) was Navarre's first solo Deepside release and has long been considered something of an under-discussed European techno classic. As this reissue proves, it's lost none of its allure. The EP's undisputed highlight remains A-side "French", a glistening, sun-bright chunk of foundational tech-house positivity shot through with Motor City style machine soul and luscious chords aplenty. Elsewhere, "IL" is warm, soft-touch deep techno at its very best, while "111" is a stripped-back acid box jam.

The Way You Feel
R&S
Cat: RS 2006. Rel: 27 Jul 20
  1. Lone X Kettama - "The Way You Feel" (4:31)
  2. Kettama - "Anniversary" (4:28)
  3. Lone - "Dragonrush" (5:55)
Review: Here's something to celebrate: a surprise joint EP from R&S regular Lone - a producer now best known for the colourful feel if his shimmering, retro-futurist workouts -and sometime Shall Not Fade contributor Kettama (real name Evan Campbell). Collaborative cut "The Way That You Feel" genuinely fuses the best of both producer's styles, with kaleidoscopic, neon-lit synth stabs and bubbly, eyes-closed electronic lead lines riding a busy bassline and 130 BPM techno drums that seem to fizz as much as they bang. They also contribute a solo track apiece. Kettama's "Anniversary" wraps gorgeous chords and restless, organ style melodies around a simple but effective groove, while Lone's "Dragonrush" is a rave-ready attack on the senses inspired by 1992 style hardcore hedonism.

Mannigfaltig Remixes Part 2
K7
Cat: K7 380R2. Rel: 29 Jul 20
  1. Sechslinien-Bodeneule (Anna remix) (7:21)
  2. Vierfleck (Recondite remix) (5:24)
  3. Siebenschlafer (Robag Wruhme remix) (6:34)
  4. Eintagsfliege (Donato Dozzy remix) (7:18)
Review: K7 have assembled another crack team of remixers on this second set of reworks of tracks from Dominik Eulberg's excellent 2019 album "Mannigfaltig", a varied set we described as his most "coherent and listenable to date". First Anna wraps fluid, musically positive motifs around bustling beats and gnarled analogue bass on a fine revision of "Sechslinien-Bodeneule", before Recondite wrings maximum emotional impact out of Eulberg's hazy melodies on a shuffling, hypnotic tech-house version of "Vierfleck". Robag Wruhme is at his warming, wonky and otherworldly best on an impeccable minimalist remix of "Siebenschlafer" (check the yearning melodies and locked-in beats), while Donato Dozzy steals the show with a sublime ambient techno revision of "Einstagfliege".

Overcome/Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)
Cat: TR 11:11. Rel: 16 Jan 19
  1. Overcome (9:08)
  2. Lady Science (NYC Sunrise) (9:24)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: relik returns with a repackaged edition of one of the catalogue's most treasured releases. "Overcome" and "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)" need little introduction, and now come sporting the new TR11:11 matrix number. Written and produced by Thomas Melchior and Baby Ford aka Soul Capsule, these tracks came from one of the many sessions recorded at the West London Ifach Studio in 1999. On the A Side "Overcome" is stripped back and energetic, driven by rolling and shuffling garage style beats, tight bubbling bass and atmospheric synth pads. The intermittent vocal samples and the release's signature organ set you up for the flip, "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)". Possibly one of house music's most emotive pieces, the track builds slowly with the introduction of each part building a story of soulful optimism based around a sparse palette of deep synths, uplifting keys and warm analogue bass. The understated beauty of the main vocal riff never seems to grow old or tired with the track lending itself perfectly to either main room, peak-time play or after-hours sessions alike. Remastered by Rashad at D & M.

  1. 808 (9:19)
  2. 808 (Magnus Asberg remix) (7:11)
  3. 808 (TIJN remix) (7:11)
Review: Ted Amber first surfaced with an impressive 12" on minimal lynchpin Botanic Minds back in 2018. Now he's back on Romana with a new joint that maintains a seductively deep mood throughout, but still knows how to jack where it counts. The undulating synth tones of "808" get carried through to Magnus Asberg's ranging, steady building remix, while TIJN creates a delicate and detailed tapestry out of the ingredients to complete the set. For classy and consistent variations on a warm, mellow house theme, look no further than this deeply satisfying drop from the Romana crew.

EEE
Cat: EEE 007. Rel: 29 Jun 20
  1. Track 1 (9:11)
Review: Madonna, Depeche Mode and Kelis - what do East End Edits have in store for us next? This seventh instalment harks back to the charming deep jazzy house of their inaugural release - think of the legendary St. Germain and that should give you a fairly good idea. The track's smoky, late night jazz bar vibe is complemented by a rolling bass and swinging rhythms that should appeal to the likes of Rhadoo or Petre Inspirescu - legends of the Romanian scene who themselves have lent their deft hand to the French producer's work as remixers in the past, too.

  1. John Shima - "Seasons"
  2. John Shima - "Hunter Mind"
  3. Mihail P - "Momentum"
  4. Mihail P - "Neon Hologarden"
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Serenity is a new label geared towards raising money and awareness around mental health in the music industry. The label kicks off in fine style with the supple, expressive techno of John Shima and Mihail P offering up two tracks each. Shima takes the A side with the warm and bubbling synth expressions of "Seasons" before taking things in a more hypnotic direction on the ever-so-slightly trancey "Hunter Mind". Mihail P maintains a similar vintage techno sound palette, but pings for positive constellations with the jubilant "Momentum" before veering into blissful breakbeat on "Neon Hologarden".

Sky Kings EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: VGNR 07. Rel: 27 Jul 20
  1. Sky Kings (7:09)
  2. Cellular Entanglement (7:20)
  3. Unfurling (9:04)
Review: The levels of intrigue continue to run high around the rapidly developing Vigenere label, as the Malin Genie-helmed label continues to showcase lesser known talents operating in more adventurous corners of the techno domain. Yard One are a UK duo split between London and Manchester, and you can certainly here a rough n' ready soundsystem attitude and the ghost of classic '90s techno permeating the textured, knotty rhythms on opening cut "Sky Kings". "Cellular Entanglement" takes things in a more serene direction, but not at the expense of crisp beats to propel the twinkling synths along. "Unfurling" presides over the flip with a mystical atmosphere that should appeal to those who like their techno oceans deep and dubbed out to perfection.

Review: Attention all DJs seeking that crowd-rocking curveball to get the people freaking out. This cheeky one-sided 12" from Digwah is guaranteed to fly out thanks to its canny sampling of Destiny's Child's "Jumpin' Jumpin'". These iconic hooks are strapped to a rolling minimal tech groove with pattering machine drum beats and a mean bass synth that gets right under your skin. Down
Down (12")
Cat: PERLON 125. Rel: 26 Jun 20
  1. Vormlock (12:03)
  2. Down (16:02)
Review: Disordered Rhythm Metronomy may be a puzzling (and, let's face it, rather strange) artistic alias, but the two men behind the project, Ricardo Villalobos and Edward, have produced some of the most distinctive leftfield techno of the last decade. As a result, you'd expect their first joint EP to be a killer... and it is. A-side "Vormlock" is a rubbery, off-kilter treat, with the experienced duo peppering an elastic synth bassline and sparse, skittish drums with glitchy stabs, tipsy lead lines and all manner of wonky, out-of-this-world noises. Over on the flipside you'll find title track "Down", a deeper and dreamier chunk of spacey minimalism in which typical Villalobos style percussion and softly squelching bass comes cloaked in some suitably intergalactic synthesizer chords.

There's a timeless quality to this stuff, whether it's the late-night swirl of "Sacrement" or the choppy, quirked-up groove of "Every Kind Of People With Any Kind Of Soul". Out of time and out of mind, the Plate just bring the kind of satisfaction to club music that could launch a thousand sessions. For the late night crew, for the mid-morning rollers and the sophisticated toe-tappers in between, sink your ear-teeth into this generous serving but whatever you do, don't call it an album.

  2. Slove - "Flash" (Pachanga Boys Hippie dance) (8:34)
  3. Red Axes - "Camino De Dreyfus" (feat Abrao - Rebolledo remix) (7:44)
Review: Having issued the excellent Momento Drive mix CD by Comeme maverick Rebolledo earlier this month, Kompakt present this addendum 12" sampler featuring three considered highlights of fifteen track set for the vinyl selectors out there. The mix CD itself was a fairly accurate representation of what you'd expect to hear in a Rebolledo DJ set, and it's great to see an 'extended raw version' of the man's own axe heavy "Windsurf, Sunburn & Dollar" lining the A Side, Vic Reeves pub singer style vocals and all! Rebolledo has a hand in the B Side cuts too, offering up a trademark Hippie Dance take on Slove as part of Pachanga Boys with Superpitcher and turning in a devilish solo remix of "Camino De Dreyfus" by I'm A Cliche dons Red Axes.

Review: Giles Smith and James Priestley are back under their Secretsundaze moniker for some top-shelf machine wranglings. There's a nervy edge to "Devious", which creates a dense sound using gnarly monosynth bass, spacious reverbed bleeps and brittle drums. "Over The Edge" heads outwards rather than inwards with rousing vocal loops colliding with plush melodic phrases and another knotty beat, while "Drifting" plays on classic 90s downtempo techno through a fog of lo-fi charm. You can sense the grit and invention that's been rubbed into these tracks, making them reach beyond straightforward club music to something altogether more intriguing.

Review: Previously, London label Butter Side Up was probably best-known for offering up some quietly impressive EPs from rising stars Sweely and Christian Jay. This EP, which comes from high-profile Los Angeles-based techno producer Urulu (real name Taylor Freels) under his alternative Liquid Earth guise, is undoubtedly the fledgling imprint's biggest release to date. Across the four tracks, Freels explores the more psychedelic side of the Californian house and techno sound, variously doffing a cap to colourful 90s techno/dub house fusion (on the chunky and ear-catching "Transcedenton"), the Orbital end of the breakbeat hardcore spectrum ("Senator Bomgwater's Revenge", which sounds like it could have featured on the Hartnoll brothers' "Brown Album"), San Diego style tech-house (the Hipp-E and Halo-ish "Twisted Metal") and dreamy breakbeat techno (lovely closing cut "Neutral Circuits").

Review: Hoary Ukraine has kept up a busy rate of release since first appearing in the world, and as was the case with their eighth EP in April, this ninth offering is a various artists affair that calls on some slick tech house talents. Nick Beringer's "AI" is tight and crisp, with an old school feel thanks to the neon baseline, the Sota really pumps the party with his effervescing, fist pumping "Zerosandones". "UXB" on the flip is Nolga's clipped, bass driven tech-garage shuffler, then closing things out is Diego Krause with "Touchstone", a darker jam with some fresh sound designs.

Review: UK IDM stalwart Luke Vibert presents part two of a trilogy which sees him delve deep into his floppy disc collection for a glorious ride through familiar motifs. Much like its title would suggest. 'Modern Rave' is a mish-mash of early '90s dance music cliches, revisited and reinterpreted in delightfully infectious and entertaining fashion. He refernces classic Todd Terry style house, D-Mob and the glory days of early UK hardcore on tracks like "Beef" or "Feel One", while homages to Detroit and evident, particualry Underground Resistance who meets orbital under the M1 circa '92 on "Dream" while jungle meets ghettotech on the frantic "Ladies". Have fun guessing and joining the dots on this wonderful audio collage of electronic music's recent history by quite the historian.

H3misphere (feat SIT remix) (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: AHH 11.11. Rel: 29 Jun 20
  1. H3misphere (7:37)
  2. Wergles (6:39)
  3. H3misphere (Sit remix) (8:32)
Review: Canadian maestro Jay Tripwire is a long time underground stalwart with countless gold-dust releases to his name, and still the modest artist keeps pushing on with more stellar tech house immersion heaters. Here he's been invited to Euphoria for an EP that burrows into the most shadowy corners of his sound. "H3misphere" is a spooky jam driven by a shuffling groove and offset with some dubby flourishes - a perfectly balanced workout for the club with a seductive air of mystery lingering around the rhythm section. "Werqles" is a lighter affair, but it's no slouch in the freaky department as a plethora of disembodied machine wriggles ping around the crisp 4/4 throwdown. The whole B-side is given over to SIT's "Remux" of "H3misphere", which holds the groove down in a more linear manner but keeps that chilling atmosphere intact just behind the beats.

Review: Leipzig's Mbius returns for the sophomore release of Ethernal, the sub label of French deepness purveyors Daydream. As like last time, it's a largely minimal affair, harking back to the early noughties glory days of Force Inc and Playhouse et al. From the groovy and dubby afterhours microfunk of "Jose", to the reduced boompty business of "6th Sense" which has that Cabinet Recordings kind of feel, plus a slick UK tech house style rework by man of the moment Nick Beringer (Rubisco) - this one's the bomb!

Crasher (12" Nachpressung)
Cat: KOMPAKT 385. Rel: 20 Jul 20
  1. Crasher (7:53)
  2. Hold It/Control It (6:48)
Review: In the two years that have passed since his last EP on Kompakt, Jake Williams (that's Rex The Dog to you and me) has spent much of his time releasing his "secret weapon" edits as digital-only singles. Perhaps he intended them to be his swansong to the nu-disco scene, because both tracks here are far more driving and intoxicating than many of his previous releases. "Crasher" is a throbbing chunk of peak-time Euro-techno underpinned by a pulsating arpeggio bassline, echo-laden computer bleeps and waves of undulating electronics. Flipside "Hold It/Control It" sounds like an EBM lover's take on Paul Woolford classic "Erotic Discourse", albeit with the addition of some catchy cut-up vocal samples.

EEE
Cat: EEE 001. Rel: 20 Dec 17
  1. Redit (8:30)
Review: This is a cheeky single-sided affair that contains a gently tooled-up, rolling and rearranged version of a Marlena Shaw-sampling jazz-house classic that is rightly considered something of a dancefloor classic. The edit itself is undoubtedly rather good, subtly adding a little more bottom-end grunt whilst making a little more of the original's snaking sax parts, much-loved vocal sample and groovy jazz percussion. You can decide or not whether the re-edit was needed; certainly, the mystery re-editor has done a rather tidy job on the rework.

Everything That Unites Us
  1. Amonita - "Lavender Bloom" (8:03)
  2. Big Red Machine - "Track 2" (RVNZ touch) (6:14)
  3. Hermanez - "Flame Keeper" (7:55)
  4. Fulltone - "Woodland Oracle" (7:15)
Review: Shanti Radio's previous multi-artists EPs were all superb, so it's little surprise to see that the latest also consistently hits the spot. Amonita sets the tone via the soft-focus tech-house shuffle of "Lavender Bloom", where lilting strings, dreamy chords and eyes-closed female vocal samples flutter around a hypnotic groove, before RVNZ offers up the similarly breezy and spring-fresh bliss of "Big Red Machine". Over on side B, Hermazez explores the kind of ultra-melodious and atmospheric hybrid progressive house/tech-house sound that the All Day I Dream label does so well ("Flame Keeper"), while Fulltone unfurls warm and ear-catching melodies and sumptuous chords on sunrise-ready closing cut "Woodland Oracle".

  1. Waves (7:56)
  2. CC (7:25)
  3. Sundayyzz (7:48)
Review: Since 2013 Tijn (not to be confused with J. Tijn) has been issuing a steady stream of high grade minimal and tech house for labels like Decay, Memoria, Moss Co and more recently Vuew. Now he comes to Aesthetic for a varied EP that leads in with the dusky, blue-hued tones of "Waves" - a moment for true immersion and introspection. By way of contrast, "CC" captures the energy of classic mid 00s minimal a la labels like Cynosure - all bugging samples hopping around a swinging groove - and we can't get enough of it. "Sundayyzz" takes things in a spookier direction, keeping that stripped back shuffle but holding down a more mellow energy compared to "CC".

Cat: EED 016. Rel: 23 Jun 20
  1. Wobble (8:09)
  2. Slammin' (8:09)
  3. Izit (6:38)
Review: Is East End Dubz the hardest working producer in the 21st century tech-house scene? He's certainly prolific, as his sprawling discography attests, but what's more impressive is the consistent quality of his releases. He's hit the mark yet again on this EP for his self-titled imprint. A-side "Wobble" is particularly potent, featuring as it does a fizzing fusion of insatiably funky bass, surging acid lines and shoulder-swinging beats. "Slammin" is closer in tone and style to the producer's trademark tech-house glitchiness - all mangled electronic motifs, straightened-out Villalobos drums and deep bass - while "Izit" is a tidy, acid-flecked box jam that increases in weight and intensity as the track progresses.

Review: Shine Grooves is a multifaceted artist, and this second record for Kimochi Sound explores two sides of that personality. The delicate, introspective, expressive precision of After All, DPS v55, and Secret move from sublime resignation to summery exuberance to a kind of earnest meditation. On the other side, collaborations with X343 yield a more extroverted approach: spontaneous mutations turn rolling grooves into unpredictable improvisational explorations.

  2. Zero Gravity (7:45)
  3. Confluence (with Barac) (12:56)
Review: The enigmatic r.hitect returns on their eponymous imprint for its fifth release. Rumoured to be an alias of an already established producer from Romania's fabled minimal techno scene, whoever they are sure delivers some powerfully dubby and hypnotic main room tackle on the 'Immersion' EP. From the sublime rolling drama of the title track, through to the moody and strobed-out tunnel vision of "Zero Gravity" - the A side cuts are perfect for getting weird during the morning hours. On the flip, there is a collaboration with scene hero Barac (Moment/Shamandrum) on the groovy afterparty minimal funk of "Confluence" to keep the party going well into Monday.
