  20. Expect Nothing (3:11)
  21. Camelphat vs Cristoph - "Breathe" (feat Jem Cooke) (6:15)
Review: Given that they started their ascent to EDM superstardom over a decade ago and have already released a string of genuine crossover anthems, this debut album from Camelphat is undeniably overdue. So, was it worth waiting for? If you like their brand of festival-friendly dance music hedonism, then you will genuinely love it. The assembled 21 tracks scattered across three action-packed slabs of wax draw influence from many interconnected styles - mostly electro-house, tech-house and techno, but also indie-dance, synth-pop, nu-disco and more bass-heavy flavours - and repackage them as distinctively Camelphat style productions, complete with contributions from numerous collaborators and guest vocalists (Noel Gallagher, Skream, Jake Bugg, Yannis Foals, Jem Cooke and Christoph all feature).

LAHA 01 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: LAHA 01. Rel: 09 Sep 19
  1. Eitt (9:37)
  2. Tvo (5:53)
  3. Thrju (9:21)
  4. Fjogur (5:50)
Review: Icelandic label Lahar debuts with this highly impressive release from NonniMal, who was previously spotted dropping the classy "Freyja" 12" on AE Recordings back in 2016. Sound design is the order of the day on "Eitt" as a beautifully rendered set of percussive bell notes chime around a minimal rhythm section - a piece pointedly geared towards transcendence. "Tvo" has an intriguing slant to its groove, as the sharply oscillating synth wobble juts out against the grain of the drums. "Thrju" takes things in a bleak but captivating direction, while "Fjogur" cools the record down in a cloud of blissful, frostbitten ambience.

Zbor Tandem EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: BM 003. Rel: 23 Nov 20
  1. Fluturul (10:10)
  2. Vulturul (7:51)
  3. Si Gaita (8:07)
Review: The Botanic Minds stable continue to inject the vague framework of minimal club music with some colour and sass with this excellent EP from Romanian mainstay Sepp. 'Fluturul' is a perfect 10-minute escapade with a seriously funky bassline and dreamy but snappy melodic hooks on top to carry you away in a reverie of sunkissed psychedelia. 'Vulturul' takes things in a deeper direction without losing the panache and personality that made the A side a winner. 'Si Gaita' seals the deal with a sundown delight that weaves together more of those interlocking melodic lines to get bodies shaking in an effortless, day-into-night fashion that spells out a long and fruity session ahead.

6 Years Of Eastenderz Pt 2
6 Years Of Eastenderz Pt 2 (coloured vinyl 12")
Cat: ENDZ 041. Rel: 01 Dec 20
  1. Chris Stussy - "Pendulum" (7:19)
  2. Rossi - "Apathe" (7:54)
  3. Cuartero - "Heavenly" (7:33)
  4. Okain - "Flyaa" (8:36)
Review: Beats bubblier than Babs Windsor, grooves more relentless than Phil Mitchell on a bender, charm like Ian Beale when he's living his best life; Eastenderz have been a consistent source of serious late night deep house delights for six years now. And rather than looking back over past achievements to celebrate the anniversary, they've reached out to some of their most exciting new members. Djebali's Chris Stussy breaks the ice with a timeless Northern Exposure-flavoured progressive breaks style jam before newcomer Dutchman Rossi weaves up some Om-style west coast dreams on 'Apathe'. Flip for a Luke Solomon MFF-era tech house bubbler from Spain's Cuartero before longtime groovesmith Okain makes his Eastenderz debut with the dubbed out Tejada-level hypnosis on 'Flyaa'. Warmer than Frank Butcher's overcoat.

One Trip To Avyon (limited hand-stamped 12")
Cat: OTTAHEKO 1. Rel: 02 Nov 20
  1. The Rhythm Of Ure Hearth (6:13)
  2. Race The Wave (6:06)
  3. PHFT (6:03)
  4. I Lost U I Miss U (5:37)
Review: To launch their One Trip To Avyon series, Heko Records has turned to the combined talents of label regulars Gianmarco Orsini and Pancratio. What they've delivered is an EP full to bursting with tracks that combine the trademark basslines and percussive ticks of vintage Chicago house with the swing of contemporary tech-house, the far-sighted, futuristic synthesizers of Motor City techno and the sparse melodic refrains of UK bleep and bass. It's an alluring blueprint that provides plenty of our highlights. Our picks are the attractive and bass heavy 'PHFT' and bleeping opener 'The Rhythm of Ure Earth', but all four tracks are suitably strong.

Baseline 87 (Sushitech 15th Anniversary reissue)
Cat: SUSH 04.5. Rel: 26 Oct 20
  1. Baseline 87' (6:46)
  2. Musik For The Dancefloor (6:24)
Review: The Sushitech festivities continue unabated with this bittersweet repress of an all-time classic from the much-missed Detroit figurehead Mike Huckaby. 'Baseline '87' ranks amongst his most fabled works, riding as it does around an irresistibly catchy square wave bass hook and one of those no-nonsense beats that the legendary producer did so well. For the sound of Huckaby in full flight though, 'Musik For The Dancefloor' on the flip soars thanks to the interplay between the pads and chords while retaining that steadfast focus. In memory of a true dance music hero, why not revisit a classic that should be comfortably sat in every record bag?

Review: Burnski's Instinct project continues to gather steam with the release of a second album following last year's Still Life, which established the Leeds tech house veteran as a serious player in the new wave of UK garage. The ideas come thick and fast on Point Of View, flowing from the aqueous 2-step funk of 'Pistolwhip' to the 4x4 uplift of 'Sunstream', but the strongest moments come when the sound design collides with formidable bassweight on the likes of 'Select'. This is primarily a collection of club tackle, but it's packed with enough shade and depth to reach beyond the dance for all those other moments when you need a little shuffle in your life.

  1. Intimacy (feat Lady Vale) (6:40)
  2. Outta Limits (7:17)
  3. Neon City Lights (6:01)
Review: UK stalwarts Audiojack are real workhorses who have provided a myriad of club-ready weapons for DJs all across the board in recent years. Most of it has come on their own Gruuv label, which is where they return now. They open this latest missive with 'Intimacy (feat Lady Vale)', a slow building tune that awakens from a subtle, deep roller into a rather spiritual cut thanks to the fine vocals. 'Outta Limits' indeed explores the sort of deserted distant planets you'd expect from the title, while 'Neo City Lights' could well be the sound of a future disco found on one such exploration.

Review: Bristol's bass bin botherer and rhythmically playful producer Facta steps up on the label he co-runs with K-Lone for two more of his superbly dialled in dance floor bombs. This ode to real life clubbing kick off with 'Doves' which pairs tripped out sound effects and tropical jungle motifs with a well swung, chunky house groove that comes backed by some serious bass. The second missive is more airy and expansive. 'MPH' blends house and 2-step to dreamy effect with nice rich synths and knocking kick drums that get you up and looking lively.

  2. Track002A (Lizz remix) (8:00)
  3. Track001B (8:18)
  4. Track002B (Barut remix) (7:47)
Review: The mystery of the Botanic Minds Sunset Series continues to unfold with another bout of surreal and sensual club tracks that balance tweaked minimalism with a warm and hazy atmosphere. "Track001A" is packed with intricate rhythmic interplay, but it's the fluttering guitar licks and displaced vocals that give the piece its unique vibe. "Track002A" is a remix credited to Eastenderz regular Lizz, and it's a particularly spellbinding jam shaped out with lingering chords and a wistful mood. "Track001B" hunkers down around a low, throbbing bassline, but there's some sweet keys hovering up top to keep things from getting too dark. Barut is on hand with a remix for "Track002B", where trancey undercurrents meet with expansive piano and ethereal ambient swells, all strapped to a sturdy minimal house groove.

  1. Lights Out (6:40)
  2. Altered States (6:17)
  3. Transitions (6:19)
Review: The Gruuv boys Audiojack have obviously been busy in lock down. Rather than turn particularly inwards or cast their gaze off to some ambient future, though, they have seemingly kept their eyes firmly on the dance floor here. 'Lights Out' is a heads down deep tech cut with nice astral pads and crisp snares. 'Altered States' surely pays homage to the classic Chicago jack track of the same name with its mad synth and snapping kicks, then 'Altered States' layers up molten melodies on more traintrack grooves that power on into the night.

EEE 009
EEE 009 (hand-stamped 1-sided heavyweight vinyl 12")
EEE
Cat: EEE 009. Rel: 13 Oct 20
  1. Track 1 (7:18)
Review: The EEE series may utilise a very simple blueprint - each single-sided, one-track release combines tasty, 21st century tech-house grooves with vocal lifts and instrumental samples from a classic cut - but so far, the publicity-shy producer behind it has yet to put a foot wrong. This ninth instalment in the ongoing series is every bit as alluring as its predecessors, in part because the headline-grabbing Nina Simone vocal samples are used sparingly and dropped into the mix for maximum impact. They mainly appear within the melodious, smile-inducing breakdown, before making way for a return to the track's chunky, seemingly squeezable tech-house groove and sweet, glassy-eyed lead lines. On paper it shouldn't work, but it really does, making this another must-check EEE release.

Cat: INSTINCT 13. Rel: 02 Nov 20
  1. Don't Know (5:35)
  2. Creeps (4:50)
Review: Burnski's 2-step shenanigans continue apace with this sizzling drop on his Instinct label. The tech house titan's inspired take on UKG hits on all the right touchstones, especially on the fired up 'Don't Know'. From the gnarly low end growls to the tightly-wound RnB vocal lick, this is as sweet n' sour as you could wish for in the grand tradition of sub-testing shufflers. 'Creeps' is no slouch either, keeping the beats tight and dexterous, and finding space for some sweet synth rushes to sneak in between the rubbery b-lines and twitchy drums.

  1. Whisper (7:09)
  2. Freak (7:08)
  3. Faze (7:08)
Review: He might not be able to play his trademark brand of swinging, UK-centric tech-house tunes to the public in clubs right now, but East End Dubz continues to serve up singles packed full of dancefloor-ready treats. His latest missive is predictably strong, particularly A-side 'Whisper'. An impressively atmospheric affair, the cut features lo-fi sounding electronic melodies rising above a chunky, hypnotizing bassline and his usual crispy, snare-heavy tech-house drums. The fun continues on the flip where 'Freak', a squelchy, acid-flecked mid-set bumper built around a limited number of teased and tweaked elements, is joined by 'Faze', which sounds like the sort of thing Sheffield sorts Swag released in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Neunachi EP (limited gold vinyl 12")
Cat: RWX 013G. Rel: 16 Nov 20
  1. Neunachi (13:14)
  2. Detrant (12:55)
Review: Following the skittering, syncopated arrangements and left-handed excursions of 'Aslohop' and 'Detrant' back in September, Ricardo returns to Rawax with two more broken rhythms. 'Neunachi' is a classic Villalobos wonky shuffer with off-grid kicks and a rainbow of wet, cavernous noises. Take away the demonic reverse vocals and you're in microhouse territory. 'Detrant' is a much more driven affair, up-tempo and thicker, electro kicks off-set by a far-away chant. Each cut going the full nine yards; if ever we've had time to truly lock in to Ricardo's famously enduring grooves, it's right now. Neun out of ten.

Cat: RSO 01. Rel: 26 Nov 20
  1. Off Message (8:38)
  2. Night Nurse (7:20)
  3. Porcupine Groove (7:27)
Review: Throughout his lengthy career, Steve O'Sullivan has proved adept at delivering "proper techno" tracks that are a cut above those of his contemporaries. This re-issued three-tracker for Rawax shows him doing just. A-side 'Off Message' sets the tone, with O'Sullivan layering deep space chords and gentle intergalactic melodies atop a tough-but-rubbery beat. The sweatier and sleazier 'Night Nurse' boasts fizzing, fill-happy drum machine percussion and deep space chords that recall the early years of Detroit techno, while 'Porcupine Grove' is a snappy, pitched-up romp rich in crunchy TR-909 beats, faintly foreboding background chords and tight melodic loops.

  3. Funkaholic (Dan Ghenacia remix) (7:02)
  4. Helling (Julian Anthony remix) (5:52)
Review: At PIV Records, the imprint's founders are using their Dutch/Indonesian heritage as a cultural aspect to create a unique blended output, which is significantly visible in the artworks and merchandise of the label. The latest release as part of their limited vinyl series comes from rising Utrecht-based young gun Joren Edwards, who is hot off his debut release not long ago on Archie Hamilton's Moss Co. PIV 005 features some swing-fuelled hypnotic tech house jams such as 'Funkaholic' reminiscent of (iO) Mulen or Jack Wickham. It also receives a deep, dark and dirty rework on the flip by legend of the Parisian underground Dan Ghenacia. Alternatively, if you are looking for some quirked out microhouse, check out 'Helling' which is perfect for getting weird at the afterhours.

  4. Luc Luc Coconut (7:31)
Review: Phil Evans and Markus Sommer's Pager label does a fine job of reimagining playful and curious old school techno through a modern lens. The 12"s are often sold out in quick time and this time they look to the talents of Porco Rosso, who doesn't release often, but makes quality moves when he does. 'Render' is a wonky, fun filled tune awash with natty melodies. 'Keine Worries In Den Hollies' dials back a little, but still excels at harmonic hits and neon synths. 'Outfits4' offers amore thoughtful house vibe that is gentle and comforting before the crisp 90s tech of 'Luc Luc Coconut' layers up farting bass and snappy stars to seductive effect.

  1. Transparent Thoughts (9:21)
  2. Transparent Thoughts (Altitude remix) (6:39)
  3. Transparent Thoughts (ThOr remix) (6:35)
Review: Canadian producer Matt Thibideau is a veteran producer who has flown under the radar for far too long, considering the quality of his dub-flecked tech house productions. 'Transparent Thoughts' rides a rock-solid rhythm section, but really it's all about the cavernous splashes of melody that chime out in echo chambers sculpted by someone who really knows their reverb. Thibideau then dons his Altitude alias for a sleeker remix which pares the chords down, re-pitches them and works in some delay for a more delicate trip through dub-tech dynamics. Thule main man ThOr then steps up for a version that edges a little more house-oriented insistence into the groove, creating a more bubbling stew that will go down smooth in an after party scenario or a warm up alike.

  1. Vormlock (12:03)
  2. Down (16:02)
Review: Disordered Rhythm Metronomy may be a puzzling (and, let's face it, rather strange) artistic alias, but the two men behind the project, Ricardo Villalobos and Edward, have produced some of the most distinctive leftfield techno of the last decade. As a result, you'd expect their first joint EP to be a killer... and it is. A-side "Vormlock" is a rubbery, off-kilter treat, with the experienced duo peppering an elastic synth bassline and sparse, skittish drums with glitchy stabs, tipsy lead lines and all manner of wonky, out-of-this-world noises. Over on the flipside you'll find title track "Down", a deeper and dreamier chunk of spacey minimalism in which typical Villalobos style percussion and softly squelching bass comes cloaked in some suitably intergalactic synthesizer chords.

Review: French deep house imprint Rutilance reaches its 'Twentieth' release as the name suggests, with four surefire tracks by its label chiefs. On the A side, the ever reliable DJ Steaw hands in two tributes to the sounds of yesteryear: he first captures the classic sound of the Cab Drivers on the tough rolling analogue bounce of "This Kind Of Music", followed by the funky disco loops on "Fat Sherbet". On the flip, co-head Gunnter makes a rare appearance and pushes the envelope harder with his tough rolling and dubby stomper "Wait" and closes it out with the entrancing energy of "Shhhake It" where its sonar bleeps hypnotise you against a backdrop of Todd Terry style 4/4 breakbeats.

  4. Chris Stussy & Litmus - "Kaizen" (6:45)
Review: Minimal groovemaker Chris Stussy and his most regular home label PIV label are inspired by the 90s-era US house sound. Think warmth, soul, and fluid grooves that come with deft samples that speak to the heart. All of those things characterise his latest outing on PIV across four killer cuts. 'Across Ocean' is a breezy, easy to love and timeless slice of house before 'Seeing & Believing' goes deeper, with a vulnerable vocal and neat chords that bring the feels. There is a more biting tech house edge to 'Independent Woman' and lastly Stussy links with Litmus for 'Kaizen,' with its lush synthscapes and cool electronic sound.

Review: Ki Mi is one of Russia's most famous exports and this EP shows why: he has a nice futuristic techno sound that is well partnered with collaborator JNJS on first cut 'Invasion'. It sets the EP out on a nice far-sighted journey through space then Sebbe remixes 'St Terrace' into a nice slick house bumper with a compelling groove. Superlounge then offers up a version of STM that would fit well into a set by a tech house great like Craig Richards. 'Lastochka' (Ilya Schulz remix) cloys out with the most spacey vibe and heady pad work of the lot. It's an atmospheric masterpiece.

  8. Kring I (locked groove) (1:00)
Review: Malin Genie's purple patch continues to yield more delights with this latest drop on his self-titled label. This time around the prolific Dutch artist is delving into smoky, hidden corners of house music where dub lingers thick in the air and rough textures scuff depth and character into the synth work. "Aventijn" has a purposeful drum machine tick but its utterly somnambulant in its execution, while "KIAR" lilts on a dusty groove and woozy clouds of funk. "Duppy" has a distinct dub techno influence, but it's still a steadfast house groover at heart, and "Amulius Numitor" ditches the beats for a pure interstellar exploration. With some bonus locked grooves for creative DJs, this is a versatile and imaginatively rendered EP with creative spark to match its usefulness in the mix.

Mama Wants Me Slim EP
Mama Wants Me Slim EP (12" in die-cut sleeve)
Cat: NMS 008. Rel: 18 Nov 20
  1. Mama Wants Me Slim (7:08)
  2. Saude (6:02)
  3. Defrag (6:22)
  4. Shy (5:31)
Review: Cesare Marchese aka Cesare vs Disorder is a master of minimalist techno. His faultless discography takes in plenty of labels and now he lands on Nervmusic with four more of his perfectly streamlined cuts. Opener 'Mama Wants Me Slim' is a groove that sounds cautious and unsettled so keeps you on edge, while 'Saude' is more rubbery and rugged in the bass department and tripped out up top. There is glitchy goodness on 'Defrag' for those who life hi definition sounds and 'Shy' closes with a mind warping mix of off-grid hits, bendy bass and freaky tones.

Cat: TELOMERE 00. Rel: 20 Oct 20
  1. Sherman C - "Bubble It Up" (6:11)
  2. Rural Red - "Wax On Wax Off" (6:59)
  3. JD Typo - "Dancefloor Between" (7:03)
  4. Anderson - "Glider Girl" (7:16)
Review: Telomere Plastic is a limited edition Wex sub series "sharing electronics from all around the spectrum." This first missive is a strong various artists release, The Telomere Connection, featuring sounds from Sherman C, Rural Red, JD Typo and Anderson. It's a lithe and synthetic affair that kicks off with bendy tones and warped pads while 'Wax On Wax Off' is a more drum-focussed grover with rippling kicks and sci-fi details. The future facing 'Dancefloor Between' gurgles with soft acid bubbles and 'Glider Girl' rounds out in bumpy fashion.

The Remixes EP
  1. Darren Emerson - "Sleeping Bag" (Ian Pooley remix) (7:15)
  2. Danny Howells - "Earthlings X" (Jimpster remix) (6:08)
  3. Dave Seaman - "Rodales" (Re You remix) (5:48)
Review: Darren Emerson, Danny Howard and Dave Seamen are all hugely influential prog house heroes who will forever be synonymous with the sound. Here some of their fie recent material gets the remix treatment on the Selador label. Berlin's Ian Pooley is first with a nice deep roller that is dreamy and will have you gazing off into the starry night sky above. Freerange boss Jimspter then goes deep as you like with his superbly stylish and subtlety spiritual take on Danny Howells's 'Earthlings X' and last of all 'Rodales' (Re You remix) is all pixelated leads and cavernous mid-tempo beats.

  5. Diurnal (8:17)
Review: Neighbour Recordings is a German label run by Birke TM and Sven Schienhammer aka Quantec - the latter bringing you its sophomore release. Schienhammer has released on renowned imprints such as Echocord, Silent Season and Toffler (to name but a few) so you're in good hands with this veteran artist on the Moments EP. Featuring some absolutely sublime dub techno experiments: from the glacial and cavernous bliss of 'Momentum I', the rolling groove of 'Nocturne' with its endless echo-laden chords, as well as the evocative acid-washed deepness of 'Diurnal' on the flip. Terrific stuff from an underrated producer - tip!

  8. Immunity
Review: We never quite know what to expect from leftfield explorer Jon Hopkins, but we know it will be worth a listen. Immunity, his fourth solo album (he's recorded two others, one with Brian Eno and another with King Creosote), doesn't disappoint. Rooted in shuffling, forthright and occasionally off-kilter rhythms, it melds hazy, late night atmospherics and subtle melodies with intense, droning chords, woozy electronics and all manner of inventive noises. It's a blend that repeatedly pays dividends, from the mournful pianos and jumpy rhythms of "Breathe This Air', to the crystalline, soundscape ambience of "Abandon Window", and glitchy wonkiness of "Form By Firelight".

  7. Fisherman Sees Another Fisherman From A Distance (7:29)
Review: With all the unfortunate hassles that label boss Denis Kaznacheev is enduring of late, we're happy to see that he is still getting on with the job of running Nervmusic. Its next release comes from St Petersburg's tech house hero Andrew Guyvoronsky aka Tripmastaz, and it's also the accomplished producer's debut full-length. Andrewsheeny Skazkif features all the functional and swing-fuelled flavour that you've come to know and love from the Plant 74 chief: from the hypnotic and ethereal bounce of 'No Grind - No Fish To Find', or the trippy Sunday morning microhouse of 'Ditch A Broad Of A Wain, Minimise A Horse's Pain', through to the slick boompty business of 'Even Vinegar Tastes Sweet If It's Free' and the evocative deep house groove of "Fisherman Sees Another Fisherman From A Distance".

Klon (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MODU 002. Rel: 05 Mar 18
  1. Klon 6 Step
  2. Wild Fudge
  3. Infrastructure
  4. Tinky Tink
Review: 100Hz have consistently snuck out 12"s since the early 90s, but their productivity is at an all time high and their Modugroove label is the perfect vessel to get more of their smartly crafted tech house treats into the ears of discerning DJs and dancers everywhere. This second release on their label kicks off with the atmospheric twinges of "Klon 6 Step", a sizzling, simmering cut for transcendental moments on the floor. "Wild Fudge" is a snappier affair peppered with folky string plucks that sound fresh in the club track context. "Infrastructure" takes things on an emotive tip with a range of strong melodic leads, and "Tinky Tink" ramps up the unease with a creeping jam for the less salubrious end of the night.

  3. Waverider (5:36)
  4. White Bricks (Adam Pits Topsy Turvy mix) (4:41)
  5. Steel (Ciel Tokyo Drifting mix) (6:16)
Review: Australia's DJ Life brings his high energy sounds to the Dansu Discs label and in doing so draws on plenty of different reference points from trance to 90s tech house. It's perfectly spaced out tech that kicks things off in glistening, futuristic fashion with 'White Bricks' before 'Steel' ups the ante and rolls on to infinity with some fish, far-sighted chords. 'Waverider' is no less urgent, but goes a little deeper for its thrills, and the flip side offers different versions with a Adam Pits Topsy Turvy remix of 'White Bricks' getting all jungle and retro-techno while 'Steel' (Ciel Tokyo Drifting mix) is a high speed gem.
