Mi Cuerpo
Mi Cuerpo (10")
Cat: PEARS 4. Rel: 13 Aug 20
  1. Mi Cuerpo (3:47)
  2. Mi Cuerpo (instrumental) (4:28)
Review: The headhunter returns. Flexing with Argentinian vocalist and songwriter Clara Sobrino (for the first in what seems to be a series) 'Mi Cuerpo' is a balle funk style wriggler; stripped back beats, booming 808s and staccato rapid fire vocals from Clara. Hot and steamy, just the like the heatwave it's being released in, there's a sweet summer funk laced deep in the groove DNA. Looking for something a little heavier and off-grid, flip for the instrumental club version. Mi Bueno!

Hermetica EP
Cat: MEDI 112. Rel: 13 Aug 20
  1. Chestlick (5:40)
  2. Hermetica (feat Sinerise) (4:53)
  3. Symbolism (5:36)
Review: At long last, Von D makes his Deep Medi debut and he's packing some serious Egyptian-Greek wisdom for the ride. We kick off with "Chestlick", a tune that lives up to its name with thick sludgy waves of low-end dynamics oozing out of the speakers. It's followed by the EP title track "Hermetica". Featuring the vocals of Sinerise, there's a deeper sense of contemplation as the wonky loose beats swagger with dubby hypnosis and all manner of trippy layers. Finally Von D signs out with "Symbolism". Tapping into the traditional dub style with consummate ease, it's the sound of Von D delivering an EP we've been eager to see for a long, long time. Salute.

Climb Out Of Your Hiding Place
Climb Out Of Your Hiding Place (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: SYSTM 033. Rel: 05 Aug 20
  1. Climb Out Of Your Hiding Place (4:34)
  2. Your Shed's Too Big (5:06)
Review: Boofy on System; we're surprised this hasn't happened sooner... But the wait has been worth it as we've got two powerful lessons in suspense, tension and low end drama. "Climb Out Of Your Hiding Place" sets the admonishing tone. Paranoid, foreboding and stripped back to the bare elements, it's the perfect pace setter. Flip for another excellently titled track as "Your Shed's Too Big" flips the focus on the rolling steppy percussion and wandering pipe arpeggio that skitters around the cut like a spider on ice. Get shedded.

  3. Float (3:22)
  4. Swamp Dub (4:40)
  5. Tarot (3:48)
  6. Morning Glow Dub (4:03)
Review: It's been a while since the last solo missive from Finland's premier dubstep producer - three years in fact - so this expansive double-pack on Innamind Recordings is undoubtedly well overdue. He begins via the skittish beats, deep sub-bass and expansive, deep space electronics of "Flo", before bouncing between the pummelling analogue bass and trippy layered vocal samples of "Trippin" and the deeper, echo and reverb-laden deep dubstep shuffle of "Float". Over on record two, "Swamp Dub" is a quietly positive chunk of liquid dubstep warmth; "Tarrot" is a slow, steady and insanely weighty chunk of future dub; and "Morning Glory Dub" is one of the finest chunks of ambient dub we've heard in 2020. Impressive stuff!

  2. We A Talk (instrumental remix) (4:39)
  3. Red (5:20)
Review: Talk is cheap but these sounds are rich. A big moment from Ishan Sound as he lays down the smokiest of steppers beneath Dread MC and Rider Shafique. A true graveyard creeper loaded with enough feels to get the undead raising their lighters, it's one of the biggest 140 moments this side of lockdown. The vibes continue with a crisp instrumental and the sharper instrumental bumper "Red". Power sounds. Less talk, more listening.

Scrape EP (12")
Cat: ARTKL 051. Rel: 13 Aug 20
  1. Scrape (4:43)
  2. Concrete (5:14)
Review: Felix Ruocco aka Deadcrow hails from The Hague, n the Netherlands, which is mostly associated with rip-snorting electro. He is a master of the dub, however, and now makes his debut on Artikal with a killer two tracker that has already been tearing up dubstep dancehalls. Opener "Scrape" has a real sense of character with its playful lead echoing a classic top line, while the reggae drums below are finished with a truly contemporary aesthetic. "Concrete" is all steel drums, wobbling low end and happy guitar riffs for sunny climes.

(Having A Sick Time) In The Mansions Of Bliss (reissue)
Cat: S7S 011R. Rel: 03 Mar 20
  1. (Having A Sick Time) In The Mansions Of Bliss (4:32)
  2. Random Lab (5:05)
  3. Shimmer (4:18)
  4. Venus (3:15)
Review: Witness the sickness. Kahn & Neek reunite for their first release in over four years on Boofy's Sector 7 and the wait's been more than worth it. Still full of tension, still unbounded, still heavy as elephants, "(Having A Sick Time) In The Mansions Of Bliss" takes the lead and it's classic K&N business with its grime elements and big downpitched string riff. It's backed by three more disarming messages: Both "Random Lab" and "Shimmer" take things down to 130 creating more space between the drum hits and heavy chords before "Venus" bids the last farewell with dense atmospheres, big clouds of harmonics and some unique drum sounds. Let's hope they don't leave it another four years.

  3. No Fear I (4:46)
  4. If Not The Orb (4:45)
Review: Serious wax from Denver to Bristol: already a big deal digitally, Foundation Audio press up "Dusted" for some black matter murkery. Once again we find the Sub.mission resident getting busy with the fusions as strong notes of traditional dub, techno and dubstep all get the blend up. Right from the very start we're taken on a trip; the slimy 4x4 gutter funk of the title track kicks off the EP, the superb cosmic dubstep finale "If Not The Orb" brings us to the end with all unique shades in between. Essential even if you've already got the digis.

Fear No One (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: MEDI 111. Rel: 30 Jul 20
  1. Fear No One (5:12)
  2. Wils Fault (6:46)
Review: After establishing their reputation via a string of fine EPs on Osiris Music, Jamie Schildhauer and Paul White brought their Kaiju collaboration to Deep Medi Music for the first time in 2015. Here they return after a four-year absence with two typically paranoid, sub-heavy workouts. A-side "Fear No One" is particularly potent, with the pair peppering an ultra-deep, speaker-bothering bassline and crunchy dubstep beats with nightmarish noises, razor-sharp electronics and decidedly creepy motifs. The skanking dub flavour is a little more evident on flipside "Wils Fault", whose sharp, angry electronic flashes are countered by a lolloping groove, warm bassline and fluttering synth sounds.

Claustro (heavyweigjht vinyl 12")
Cat: HDB 120. Rel: 14 Jun 19
  1. Claustro (5:44)
  2. State Forest (7:53)
Review: While he's offered up the occasional remix, William "Burial" Bevan has been rather quiet of late. In fact, this two-tracker marks his first original material for almost two years. Lead cut "Claustro" is an unexpectedly up-tempo dancefloor affair - a sweet and sticky chunk of future-garage that sees Bevan wrap sugary female vocal snippets, spacey chords and bubbly analogue electronics around snappy two-step beats - drenched in vinyl crackle and tape hiss - and a rock solid bassline. It will raise a few eyebrows given his previous work but nevertheless sounds like a summer anthem in waiting. Bevan returns to familiar territory on flipside cut "State Forest", a ghostly, field recording-laden ambient excursion where pedal steel style motifs slowly rise above opaque electronics.

  1. Gorgon Sound - "Find Jah Way"
  2. Dubkasm - "Find Jah Way" (version)
Review: Peng Sound revisit their highly sought after debut release. Just shy of two years old, it still rattles and hums with authentic dub warmth and drama. Gorgon Sound's original bubbles with bouncy heat as the bass modulations spring off the double-up kicks. Dubkasm's version is equally alluring as we're invited into a much wider space where guitar shots and other melodic elements are entwined into the mix. One timeless composition, two killer versions, if you weren't lucky enough to grab this first time round, you know what to do!

  4. Renegade (4:21)
Review: Classical violinist / low-end-murker Opus returns to his White Peach family with this four track treat after a few exemplary outings on the likes of Chestplate and Simply Deep. "This Damn Feeling" takes the lead and sets the mood with drama. Its big boom bass and tight spine sitar twangs are followed by a full menu of ideas and explorations. "Day & Age" wriggles with that high end harmonic we all fell in love with in 2008 before twinkling arpeggios bring on the goosebumps like you'd never believe. Flip for more goodies... "Ghost" takes us to the Upside Down with its toxic waste bass and icy vocal shots before "Renegade" concludes the EP on a dank, sludgy one. This damn EP!

Review: One riddim track, three hugely distinctive voices; Dub-Stuy continue their riddim series with "Santa Muerte Riddim". Loose, spacious, mystic and led by cold steel string twangs, Jonah Freed's beat sings on its own merits but each vocalist adds their own touch. Rider Shafique takes the lead with his signature smoky tones and poetics, Jahdan Blakkamoore contrasts between his gravelly spoken word and musicality on the chorus before Pupajim lets the beat breathe a little more before going full harmonic ham. Holy moly.

Cat: SEN 014. Rel: 01 Jul 20
  1. Boylan & Logos - "Orders" (4:13)
  2. Boylan, Slimzee & USF - "The Mould" (4:40)
Review: It was only a matter of time before Boylan landed on Youngsta's Sentry. A master of dark subby funk, usually found more around the grime and breaks corners, his sound has always lent itself to the more traditional dubstep vibe. As proved by these two savage collaborations. "Orders" sees him teaming up with old mate Logos for a hammering halftime vibe that pays respect to the traditions but does with a slight techno twist. Flip for "The Mould" where the breaks come out in full force. A proper swinging jam with wild drums and an elasticated bassline, there's nice nod to the turn of the century dark garage and early Bingo feel as we're pushed and shunted into bassy parts unknown. Sentry just keep on smashing it.

Cat: FAVX 005. Rel: 28 Jul 20
  1. Fantomatique (5:06)
  2. Vox Dub (5:07)
Review: If you're looking for some "militant dubstep bass weight" (as the accompanying hype sheet calls it), then we'd heartily recommend this limited-edition outing from Foundation Audio founder Chad Dubz and occasional label artist Quasar. They hit the ground running with creepy, atmospheric and spaced-out A-side "Fantomatique", where fizzing electronic noises, dubbed-out synth sounds and frankly foreboding audio textures drift around a tweaked wobble style bassline and head-nodding deep dubstep beats. Flipside "Vox Dub" is even more dubbed-out, with mangled, mutilated male vocal samples and echoing background chords weaving in and out of another bassbin-bothering, mind-altering late-night groove.

  5. DJ Chalice - "Artois Anthem" (4:26)
  6. DJ Chalice - "Raise Ya Chalice" (3:40)
Review: Chow Down serves up its second release with the adventurous grime exploits of Fallow and DJ Chalice, twisting out all kinds of audacious bass shapes that would set the dance alight at parties such as Boxed. Fallow takes the A side with confidence, fresh from a release on Blood Frenzy, and "Blitz" shows the emergent producer is taking no prisoners with a hail of bullets and haunting Indian classical samples. "Northern Don" is a more wobbly synth-rich beat, while "Operation Dark Fruit VIP" amps up the grime strings. DJ Chalice has a lighter touch, bringing in some sunnier melodics and embracing the RnB influences on "Artois Anthem".

"Hamburg" counts us in with off-kilter funk and a barbed sense of AI mystique and tension that rises throughout. "Haste" on the flip struts with even more tension. What begins with minimal menace soon develops into a growling beast that's tightly sprung with drama. Serious business to kick off another smoking decade for camp Sparrow.

  2. JFO - "Destroyer Of Worlds" (5:35)
Review: For the seventh salvo on Well Rounded Records' "Well Rounded Dubs" series, the hard-working Brighton crew has secured tracks from two hard-working and well-regarded producers. Bristol based Chad Dubz handles side A, reaching for the weirdo effects, psychedelic electronics, sub-heavy bass and head-nodding beats on bleeping post-dub head-nodder "FKD" (think Mad Professor after overdosing on LSD and you're close). Over on side B Manchester's JFO takes over and treats us to a particularly deep dubstep excursion where creepy effects, ricocheting percussion sounds and horror style spoken word samples cluster around crunchy beats and a suitably sustained sub-bass motif.

Review: Making their debut on Warp, Hudson Mohawke and Lunice proudly cross their beams to rain down a sick and slick kind of future-crunk, aptly demonstrated in in the introductory nature of bass-rich teaser "Top Floor" with its juke leanings and menacing posture. There's a detuned nature to the recognisable bleeps and wails on offer here while the beats remain crunchy and steadfast. "Higher Ground" is more overt in its use of juke to create a twisted kind of hype, while "Bugg'n" drips and drops in a loping vat of sub bass and slow-mo strangeness, leaving you with one of the oddest takes on the contemporary mess of electronic beats.

Review: Without argument, Terror Danjah has been one of the most influential and respected producers in the grime scene since day one, and "Invasion" is his sixth album. Fully instrumental and loaded with ideas, samples and a myriad of musical twists and turns, this far excels any standard grime boundary and celebrates everything that's great about UK bass and beatmaking culture. Every beat has its own story; the soulful swoons on "Scene 1", the absolute gully daggers of "Snowfall", the wheezy eastern pipework of "TBC" and the dense, intense head-spin "After Dark". Total blueprint business and releases at a very poignant time. We wish Terror a speedy and full recovery.

Review: Veteran grime star and rap giant Kano uses the hoodie as a symbolic crux throughout his sixth album. It's an item of clothing often associated with criminality and errant youths, but here he re-casts it as a form of protection for young black men who have a wide range of racial and societal pressures to deal with. It makes for a politically charged album with shiny electronica next to stark and prickly beats, melancholic pianos and minimal garage rhythms. A musically expansive work that crosses many styles and scenes, but remains united by Kano's ever impassioned deliveries.

Decadubs 1 EP
Cat: HDB 082. Rel: 22 May 14
  1. Mala - "Expected, Level 10"
  2. DVA - "Technical Difficulties"
  3. Kuedo - "Mtzpn"
  4. Kode9 - "Xingfu Lu" (Helix remix)
Review: Hyperdub kick off the vinyl side to their ten-year celebrations with this weighty four-tracker from some of the leading lights from the label's story. Mala is in a strident mood with "Expected, Level 10" carrying through that extra touch of melody from the Mala In Cuba LP. DVA cuts loose with the leftfield scattershot groove of "Technical Difficulties", reveling in tonal experimentation and jagged rhythmic flair to a stunning end. Still locked into the sci-fi trap tangent that characterised Severant, Kuedo turns out the haunting "Mtzpn" and Helix pops up for a remix of Kode9's "Xingfu Lu" that strips down to bare essentials with a little starlit soul rubbed into the framework.

Speak Numbers
Cat: IMRV 029. Rel: 10 Mar 20
  1. Speak Numbers (4:40)
  2. Stay Low (3:15)
  3. Come To Play (4:39)
Review: Some folk speak gibberish, others speak the language of love, DE-TU "Speak Numbers"... And what beautiful digits they are. Picking up where they left us on White Peach way back in 2018, once again the Bristol duo run the 140 gamut. "Speak Numbers" is a melancholy moment of reflection with delicate chords swooning over faraway voices, "Stay Low" murks things up with stern bars and a grime feel to the beats while "Come To Play" closes with a big wobbly bottomed sub, rippling dub synths and gradual rhythm momentum. Numbers don't lie.

Sweetz
Sweetz (limited 1-sided 10")
Cat: HDB 103. Rel: 29 Jul 16
  1. Sweetz (7:08)
Review: Woof! Hyperdub bring together two of the most recognisable and enigmatic artists of recent times on this 10", as Zomby and Burial square down ahead of the former's new album for the label. Zomby's Ultra LP is undoubtedly one of this year's most anticipated albums and "Sweetz" suggests it may be a very moody affair indeed. Whilst rooted in UK dance, Zomby and Burial do look elsewhere for inspiration too. Just under seven minutes long, "Sweetz" veers through various sub-heavy soundscapes with intermittent rhythmic patters and a distinctive looped vocal sample whose pitch changes with dramatic effect.

Bluefoot
Bluefoot (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: IMRV 025. Rel: 11 Dec 18
  1. Bluefoot (4:43)
  2. Choose Life (4:26)
Review: Since 2015, deep dubstep explorer Corin Bornoff AKA Karma has put out one EP a year. This year's was delayed, it seems, but it has finally appeared - just as 2018 is wheezing its' last, scarlet-faced breath. Opener "Bluefoot" was arguably worth the wait, though. Built around a skewed but still stepping, reggae-fired dubstep "ridim", the track shuffles along on a wave of hushed shakers, ultra-deep sub-bass and intergalactic dub-wise effects. Over on the flipside, "Choose Life" is surprisingly positive, with Bornoff wrapping ear-catching synthesizer melodies, alien electronics and UK steppas style bass around a punchy drum track.

  1. V1 (5:10)
  2. Ribcage (part II) (5:13)
  3. Roacher (5:04)
Review: Epoch returns! And he's packing some of his rarest steez since "Soundboy Abduction". All air raid sirens, trippy widescreen basses and a scientific spoken word all comprise to form a brutal wall of sound slo-mo drama on "V1" while "Roacher" bubbles with a technoid sense of playfulness and unpredictability. Finally "Rib Cage" takes the surreal sensations to even higher levels with a melting intro, nagging hi-end percussion and the strangest harmonic strings ever to grace an Innamind release. Truly singular.

  1. Bullet 2 (4:44)
  2. Inside (5:11)
  3. More Cowbell (4:56)
  4. Gunshot Clap (5:01)
Review: Busting open a brand new bottle of 2019 with his bare Mancunian hands, Walton returns to Pinch's Tectonic with his first fresh dispatch since his sophomore album Black Lotus. As always, it's a full-bodied assault as "Bullet 2" licks shots with technoid venom. "Inside" follows with a similar spirit but with even less layers of armour and a bouncier bassline, while "More Cowbell" does that toxic Pulse X style alien bass thing, gets all trippy with the percussion and seriously stampy with the kicks. Finally, we close with a bruked up G swagger on the spacious, foreboding "Gunshot Clap". Shots fired.

Crossing The Line
Cat: TEC 109. Rel: 23 Oct 19
  1. Crossing The Line (4:37)
  2. Send Out (4:37)
Review: Given the beat-making and production talents of Bristol boys Pinch and Khan, this hook-up with grime MCs Killa's Army - Killa P, Irah and Long Range - was never going to fail. Even so, "Crossing The Line" is insanely good; a future club anthem in which the three MCs get the hype going over a weighty, fuzz-fuelled beat that sits somewhere between grime, dancehall and dubstep. Killa (sorry) stuff. Pinch and Khan ditch the MCs on B-side workout "Send Out", instead peppering a moody bassline, clandestine aural textures and ricocheting vocal samples with gunshot snares, gut-punching sub tones and panicked electronics.

  1. Don't Wanna Know (3:10)
  2. Predator Vs Prey (Toxin) (4:12)
  3. Photosynthesis (feat Tranq Sinatra) (3:19)
Review: Etch and Nico Lindsay make good musical bedfellows; the former's spacious left-footed soundscapes providing plenty of room for Nico's narrative, evolving lyrical style, they're kindred spirits linked by a glacial sense of adventure and refusal to compromise. Opener "Don't Wanna Know" kicks the doors down with force. Rough and switchy, there's a pulsing 2002 feel to both the step and flow while "Predator Vs Prey (Toxin)" takes us on a much swampier, weirded out trip that buns everything but survival. Finally, Tranq Sinatra joins the fray for an urgent finale where fast-tongue tales from Nico are backed from Tranq harmonies and another iced riddim from Etch. Cold.
