Hiss (limited 7" in screen-printed sleeve)
Cat: ZAMZAM 80. Rel: 05 Oct 20
  1. Hiss (4:18)
  2. Palms (4:10)
Review: ZAMZAM goes bang bang once again as the dutty dubstep label hits release number 80. Cause keeps it utterly filthy on the a-side with 'Hiss,' a heavyweight nobler with a menacing bassline that's so fat it wiggles as it walks. Crashing hits and sci-fi synth motifs make this a most astral crawler. 'Palms' has whirring synths and a bassline curried oceans below. Freaky vocal sounds are haunting and dark and add tension to the track as it prowls along through an utter wasteland. Atmospheric stuff, to be sure.

  1. Lobby Theme (4:42)

  3. Procession (5:47)
Review: Sheffield-based Dom Tarasek aka Commodo has been making tracks for nearly 12 years now and returns to Mala's Deep Medi Musik with the Procession EP. The three tracks on offer are loosely based on a H.P. Lovecraft inspired story "where an investigator shows up at an unfrequented hotel and discovers a supernatural cult." After the trippy wall of sound polyrhythms on the introspective 'Lobby Music,' more Cthulhu Mythos vibes await on the deep dubstep journey 'Eldritch' before going further down the spiral with the arcane and dusty downbeat epic 'Procession'.

  3. Leng Pon Sirius (4:10)
  4. The Marble (5:39)
Review: Two Rangers made a big debut on Next Level Dubstep and now make their first outing on the legendary Deep Mehdi label. They bring with them an interesting mix of reference points, from heavy, swaggering bass music to cavernous metropolitan dub via a world of sci-fi sonics and computer game electronics. The title track exemplifies all that perfectly, while 'Leng Pon Sirius' pulls back a little and goes deeper into a future world of eerie sounds. 'Dusty Plasma' is a real stepper with low end wobble and 'The Marble' closes in dark fashion with twinkling hi ends and inky lows.

Joken
Joken (10")
Cat: CRUCIAL 019. Rel: 26 Oct 18
  1. Joken (4:04)
  2. Get Them Bags (4:27)
Review: Sleeper man Alex Fox debuted the GRAMZ alias earlier in the year via a two-track 12" on Sentry Records built around paranoid sonic textures, serious bass-weight and rolling 140 BPM beats. For this 10" outing on Crucial, Fox has taken a deeper approach, ratcheting up the smoky atmosphere while retaining sizeable low-end pressure. "Joken" and flipside "Get Them Bags" are hazy, ultra-deep dubstep workouts, with both doffing a cap towards hip-hop and grime (check out the manipulated MC vocal samples on the latter, in particular), as well as the crackling sonic textures of Burial. "Joken" rolls along nicely while remaining pleasingly subdued, while "Get Them Bags" has a little more sonic strut. Both, though, are excellent.

  1. The Business (3:19)
  2. Naraka (4:20)
  3. Amplified (4:34)
  4. Unresolved (4:12)
Review: Infernal Sounds return with family member Chad Dubz (Foundation Audio) alongside debutant Somah - the latter previously of Deep Medi Musik, Scrub A Dub and Chord Marauders fame. The Business EP features the wonky wall of sound of the title track and its proper progressions in grime, followed by the sinister street level futurism of 'Naraka' going down a dark dubstep route. On the flip, the dread infused mediative dub on "Amplified" is an EP highlight, followed by the equally minimal and contemplative halftime journey "Unresolved".

Review: James Blake's debut album is undoubtedly one of 2011's most keenly awaited releases, and its arrival via his own (major label funded) Atlas imprint ensures their is no lull in momentum for a producer who enjoyed a watershed 2010 with releases on Hessle Audio and R&S. The results here differ wildly from his previous sonic excursions - gone are the shimmering R&B soaked melodies of "CMYK" and the sheer experimentalism of the Klavierwerke EP, which saw the young Londoner depart from the confines of the dancefloor and enter a realm where there was only a passing reference to rhythm-based music. Instead we are treated to Blake's own yearning, raw voice, delicate pianos and an underlying sense of melancholy. Ubiquitous single "Limit To Your love" and the crackly sonic terrain evoked on "The Wilhelm Scream" are among the most immediately pleasing moments, but there is much to explore here. It's a fascinating opus and surely the catalyst to a long and fruitful career at the top.

Review: Making their debut on Warp, Hudson Mohawke and Lunice proudly cross their beams to rain down a sick and slick kind of future-crunk, aptly demonstrated in in the introductory nature of bass-rich teaser "Top Floor" with its juke leanings and menacing posture. There's a detuned nature to the recognisable bleeps and wails on offer here while the beats remain crunchy and steadfast. "Higher Ground" is more overt in its use of juke to create a twisted kind of hype, while "Bugg'n" drips and drops in a loping vat of sub bass and slow-mo strangeness, leaving you with one of the oddest takes on the contemporary mess of electronic beats.

  4. Track 4 (4:43)
Review: In the press blurb accompanying their latest EP, Subchaser, Truth's Andre Fernandez and Tristan Roake describe their return to Deep Medi Musik as "coming home". Certainly, it was Mala's label that helped them establish their reputation and the Digital Mystikz man has a knack of signing their best material. There's certainly plenty to get the bloody pumping across the EP, from the warped, machine-gun style wobble bass pattern, hot-stepping beats and clandestine electronic sounds of the title track, to the mellow chords, undulating high-range electronic melodies, rumbling bass and hot-stepping beats of 'Shadow Samurai'. Also worth a listen is 'Tui', a wonderfully evocative, textured, musically layered and atmospheric collaboration with legendary New Zealand producer Tiki Taane.

  1. Bluefoot (4:43)
  2. Choose Life (4:26)
Review: Since 2015, deep dubstep explorer Corin Bornoff AKA Karma has put out one EP a year. This year's was delayed, it seems, but it has finally appeared - just as 2018 is wheezing its' last, scarlet-faced breath. Opener "Bluefoot" was arguably worth the wait, though. Built around a skewed but still stepping, reggae-fired dubstep "ridim", the track shuffles along on a wave of hushed shakers, ultra-deep sub-bass and intergalactic dub-wise effects. Over on the flipside, "Choose Life" is surprisingly positive, with Bornoff wrapping ear-catching synthesizer melodies, alien electronics and UK steppas style bass around a punchy drum track.

Orbit Dub (limited 7" in screen-printed sleeve)
Cat: ZAMZAM 76. Rel: 13 Feb 20
  1. Orbit Dub (4:11)
  2. Theory Dub (4:14)
Review: Since launching in 2014, Portland's ZamZam Sounds imprint has offered up a string of beautifully packaged seven-inch singles from a mixture of big hitters and rising stars from the global bass music scene. Their latest missive comes from Dayzero, a Japanese dubstep producer best known for his outings on Wheel & Deal, Sentry and, most recently, Vomitspit. The two tracks here are weighty, intergalactic and otherworldly, mixing dub style rhythms with the kind of angular, razor-sharp sub-bass motifs more often associated with dancefloor dubstep. Both cuts are quality, though it's rolling A-side "Orbit Dub" - all lolloping dub beats, wobble bass, metallic effects and paranoid aural textures - that really stands out.

Salsa Apocalypso
Cat: NONPLUS 018. Rel: 19 Dec 11
  1. Salsa
  2. Ache
Review: Nonplus continue to confound all with their esoteric approach to curation with the debut record from Doubleheart, a collaborative project between Optimo's JD Twitch and bass pioneer Neil Landstrumm. In a year of strong releases from the label, it easily stands out as one of their best; "Salsa" utilises brittle mechanical congas as the rhythmic backbone for the track, but it's the massively oscillating bass and sirens that really make it, being simultaneously huge but also restrained enough to prevent it falling into typical bass tropes. "Ache" meanwhile takes things down a notch with a housier tempo and thick bass slabs which threaten to go into full on acid at times. But it's the echoing vocal fragments and rhythm guitar that fascinate most, joining the dots between the obvious influence of Jamaican dub and contemporary bass.

  1. Squeeze Me
  2. Face Me
  3. Dare Me
  4. White Noise
Review: Just when you thought you had Al Bleek and Damon Drama's Non Plus sorted, they go and make a sharp diversion and take you somewhere completely different. The destination? LOL. And no, that's not a joke. A teaser for their forthcoming album Me Me, the tracklist reads a little like an Alice In Wonderland list of instructions or perhaps a seductive dance; "Squeeze Me" kicks off with sinuous R&B style vocals and enticing synths with a slow, lolhloping half step rhythm, which inevitably drags you in deep like a tidal current of sound, while "Face Me" follows a languid 4/4 drum pattern drenched in late night synths. "Dare Me", up next, mirrors the sonic palette with shimmering, spaced out atmospherics and more glorious, syrup sweet lyrics. Visceral and rather enthralling, it bears the hallmarks of nocturnal dance music with throbbing b-line and infectious, enveloping synth-work, but with an underlying pop/R&B sensibility that shines through the darkness. Crackly, droning atmospherics sit beneath ice cold bleeps on finale "White Noise". A far cry from much of the recent Non Plus output for sure, but a remarkable release nonetheless which we urge you to get your teeth into.

Review: Three years on from his last album, Skepta's profile has never been higher. Whereas he was once an underground hero railing against anti-grime sentiments and the misunderstanding of his art, he's now an international star with a string of guest spots on gargantuan US hip-hop hits to his name. Expectancy is high, then, for "Ignorance Is Bliss". Happily, we can confirm it's another strong set. His lyrics continue to bristle with intensity, while his flow and vocal delivery remain as distinctive as ever. As for the beats, they're heavy and punchy, variously doffing a cap to chart-bothering hip-hop, sleazy trip and distorted, sub-heavy grime. In other words, he may be a star, but Skepta's records remain as real as ever.

Review: In these times of difficulty and dread we always turn to music, and there can be no better safe space than these deep dub wise meditations courtesy of Spanish studio wizard Bukkha. Featuring the vocal talents of Ranking Joe and melodic flute work of Don Fe, 'Revolution Time' is a heady one with steel plated drums and swaggering kicks. The dub is more paired back and subtle, while 'War Flute' is another gem that pairs flute beauty with drum based heaviness. A second dub rounds out what is a crucial EP.

Review: Koma is one-fifth of Chonk Mob as well as being a fine solo artist. He was a late arrival to the Encrytped Audio family but more than made up for it with his standout offerings. This time out he offers a bootleg of Bazzi - 'Mine' which has a pained vocal lead and dragging trap beats all finished with some cloudy synths and crisp hits. It's a deep and tender cut then on the flip he serves up 'Alicias Keys'. This one rides a rising chord vamp and jittery but weighty beat with fizzing static, bright synth stabs and glassy melodies all adding light and future soul.

Review: The dream team of East Man and Walton are back together for another collaborative single on Hi Tek. Things kick off with the tough as teak 'Screw Face', which does just what it says on the tin. It's a square wave banger with a big bad bass that cannot fail to make you jump. Flip it over for something more hard and steppy despite the fact it moves as a slow and icy pace. 'Don't Speak' layers off kilter percussion and booming sub bass that makes for a meditative sound that will get all the head nodders lost in their own world right by the speaker stacks.

Just a warm 808 bass/kick and snare hits, weaving and bobbing with heavy hypnosis. Flip for "Border Clash" where strange bee's nest textures buzz between the bass hits and shattered percussive hits. Paranoid, confusing, heavy. Dark times inspire dark tunes.

"Dub Grinder" is a blast back to 2007 with its brazen horns and flabbery swagger. A track that's been lurking in Coki's sets for some time now and saw a very limited TP release last year, it's now yours to grind on vinyl for a limited time. Needed some extra spice? Review: For the latest volume in FatKidOnFire's vinyl series, boss man Will Benton has handed over the reins to Foundation Audio founder Chad Smit AKA Chad Dubz, a producer who can usually be relied on the deliver the sub-heavy goods. He begins by joining forces with Biome on '455', a laidback but weighty slab of punishing dubstep creepiness, before uniting with Eddy Seven on a fine fusion of bassline style warped bass and crunchy post-dubstep beats ('Strictly'). He goes solo on 'Nilaari', an aggressive and angry slab of dancefloor dubstep peppered with 8-bit electronics, before DJ Madd delivers a sparse, stripped-back and insanely sub-heavy re-wire of '455'.

Review: The Basskruit gang (aka duploc.com founder Pieter Grauwels and producer Hebbe Versteegh) serve up a second release that follows up the very well received first in fine fashion. The label states it is on a mission to support the local Belgian and Dutch scene and does that by turning to Cubiqle. Once again the music deals in brilliant 140bpm tackle, with heavy bass and crisp percussion. The original, 'Duna', sways and swaggers on half time bass and beats with a saw tooth lead. various remixes include SCHIM92's more broken, heavy take, low end wobble from Datra and Crowley and more prickly synth work from Moonstreams.

Review: The inaugural release for new Belgian label Basskruit comes from Sweepa of Version Collective, featuring the producer Tosti (Foundation Audio). The ?Kopstoot EP features some deeply reflective and hypnotic expressions in deep dubstep as best heard on the title track, which is chased up by an immersively rhythmic remix by label co-head Hebbe (Overdue/Next Level Dubstep). In addition, we have the groovy and bass driven party vibe of 'Ketel' over on the flip, which also gets treated to yet more worthy renditions. The mesmerising polyrhythms of TMSV's perspective were bang on, while Redquake's low end pulsations add more to an altogether dense, wall of sound presentation - killer!

Review: Rustie's long-awaited follow-up to Glass Swords has landed. And it's every bit as beautiful as you'd expect. Delivered with more narrative consistency than his first, it's the sound of a producer who's found his palette and knows how to create the most perfect colours. Ranging from the somnambulant euphoria of "Paradise Stone" to the rainbow grime of the D Double E-fronted "Up Down" via the concentrated over-layered guitar psychedelia of "Tempest", and complete with cameos from the likes of Danny Brown, Redinho and Gorgeous Children, Rustie has created the consummate sophomore that goes way beyond any expectations.

Review: The original enfant terrible of the bass music world marks his second long player for 4AD with a sprawling opus of more than 30 skits and skirmishes daubed in his trademark colourful sonic scrawl. There is plenty here that reminds you of the early days of the producer's emergence when dubstep was a younger beast, from the spacious "Horrid" to the measured arpeggios of "Pray For Me", but you'll also find more intricate musings such as the dynamic and dramatic "Memories". Hype abounds on the creepy Funky of "VI-XI", while "Overdose" launches enthusiastically into a jungle tear out. At any given turn, you'll find yourself surprised, lurched from a serene mood into a manic one, only to be tempered again. There's a staggering range of ideas and styles to comprehend here, but would you want it any other way from one of electronic music's most outspoken upstarts?

Hermetica EP

  1. Chestlick (5:40)
  2. Hermetica (feat Sinerise) (4:53)
  3. Symbolism (5:36)
Review: At long last, Von D makes his Deep Medi debut and he's packing some serious Egyptian-Greek wisdom for the ride. We kick off with "Chestlick", a tune that lives up to its name with thick sludgy waves of low-end dynamics oozing out of the speakers. It's followed by the EP title track "Hermetica". Featuring the vocals of Sinerise, there's a deeper sense of contemplation as the wonky loose beats swagger with dubby hypnosis and all manner of trippy layers. Finally Von D signs out with "Symbolism". Tapping into the traditional dub style with consummate ease, it's the sound of Von D delivering an EP we've been eager to see for a long, long time. Salute.

  3. Red (5:20)
Review: Talk is cheap but these sounds are rich. A big moment from Ishan Sound as he lays down the smokiest of steppers beneath Dread MC and Rider Shafique. A true graveyard creeper loaded with enough feels to get the undead raising their lighters, it's one of the biggest 140 moments this side of lockdown. The vibes continue with a crisp instrumental and the sharper instrumental bumper "Red". Power sounds. Less talk, more listening.

  1. Walk (4:18)
  2. Inutile (4:38)
  3. Ambivalent (4:42)
  4. External Single Processor (4:41)
Review: This new EP by Quasar is a deeply emotional release. It's about the evolution of the French producer's state of mind in recent years, taking in his mistakes, success and love. All in all it's an evolution heard across all tracks, and he hopes to make you feel the same as he did while composing them. Beginning with the meditative piano timbres of the title track, followed by the deep and dusty dubstep of 'Inutile' on side A. Over on the flip, we have the knackered, off-kilter and arcane vibe of 'Ambivalent' followed by the tripped-out low end theories of 'External Single Processor'. Following up equally impressive releases for the likes of Artikal Music and oundation Audio, bear witness to yet more masterful minimal bass by Remy Gallet.

Decadubs 1 EP

  1. Mala - "Expected, Level 10"
  2. DVA - "Technical Difficulties"
  3. Kuedo - "Mtzpn"
  4. Kode9 - "Xingfu Lu" (Helix remix)
Review: Hyperdub kick off the vinyl side to their ten-year celebrations with this weighty four-tracker from some of the leading lights from the label's story. Mala is in a strident mood with "Expected, Level 10" carrying through that extra touch of melody from the Mala In Cuba LP. DVA cuts loose with the leftfield scattershot groove of "Technical Difficulties", reveling in tonal experimentation and jagged rhythmic flair to a stunning end. Still locked into the sci-fi trap tangent that characterised Severant, Kuedo turns out the haunting "Mtzpn" and Helix pops up for a remix of Kode9's "Xingfu Lu" that strips down to bare essentials with a little starlit soul rubbed into the framework.

Sweetz
Sweetz (limited 1-sided 10")
Cat: HDB 103. Rel: 29 Jul 16
  1. Sweetz (7:08)
Review: Woof! Hyperdub bring together two of the most recognisable and enigmatic artists of recent times on this 10", as Zomby and Burial square down ahead of the former's new album for the label. Zomby's Ultra LP is undoubtedly one of this year's most anticipated albums and "Sweetz" suggests it may be a very moody affair indeed. Whilst rooted in UK dance, Zomby and Burial do look elsewhere for inspiration too. Just under seven minutes long, "Sweetz" veers through various sub-heavy soundscapes with intermittent rhythmic patters and a distinctive looped vocal sample whose pitch changes with dramatic effect.

  2. Inside (5:11)
  3. More Cowbell (4:56)
  4. Gunshot Clap (5:01)
Review: Busting open a brand new bottle of 2019 with his bare Mancunian hands, Walton returns to Pinch's Tectonic with his first fresh dispatch since his sophomore album Black Lotus. As always, it's a full-bodied assault as "Bullet 2" licks shots with technoid venom. "Inside" follows with a similar spirit but with even less layers of armour and a bouncier bassline, while "More Cowbell" does that toxic Pulse X style alien bass thing, gets all trippy with the percussion and seriously stampy with the kicks. Finally, we close with a bruked up G swagger on the spacious, foreboding "Gunshot Clap". Shots fired.
