Toxic Funk Vol 4
Cat: BBP 185. Rel: 14 Jan 21
  1. Dance To The Beat (3:13)
  2. Treacherous Love (3:07)
Review: DJ P and the Breakbeat Junkie have been working together as Second Hand Audio for well over a decade, though this contribution to the Toxic Funk series - the fourth in total, fact fans - marks their first joint appearance on Breakbeat Paradise. In keeping with the series' party-starting ethos, A-side 'Dance to the Beat' sees them cannily combine chunky funk breaks with old school hip-hop snippets, vintage soul vocal lifts and jangly instrumental samples from what sounds like a breezy cover version of the Jacksons' 'ABC' (but probably isn't). The smile-inducing fun continues on flipside jam 'Treacherous Love', a slower, hip-hop-tempo number that peppers a head-nodding beat and funk-rock guitars with vocals from an all-star rap number.

Young Gifted & Black
Young Gifted & Black (7'' limited to 300 copies)
Cat: ARETHA 45. Rel: 04 Dec 20
  1. Aretha Franklin & Black Star - "Young, Gifted & Black" (4:50)
  2. Aretha Franklin & Gucci Mane - "My Chain Of Fools" (2:48)
Review: Over the past few years, American producer Amerigo Gazaway has delivered some of the most inspired mash ups and bootleg remixes around, including a number that breathe new life into recordings by genuine soul and hip-hop greats. He's at it again here, crafting two killer cuts featuring the late, great Aretha Franklin. He first offers up a head-nodding take on 'Young, Gifted and Black' that cleverly combines his own beats, extended raps from Tallib Kewli and Mos Def as Black Star, and snippets of Aretha at her powerful best. Flip the disc for 'Chain of Fools', a stomping fusion of hip-hop and Detroit soul which sees him flit between Gucci Mane raps and more Aretha goodness.

Shimmy Shimmy Ya
Cat: COMBO 003. Rel: 21 Dec 20
  1. Shimmy Shimmy Ya (Big Mac edit) (3:48)
  2. Brooklyn Zoo (Big Mac edit) (3:57)
Review: While this may have the look of a bootleg release, we're reliably informed that DJ/producer Big Mac reworked these two 1990s Ol' Dirty Bastard classics from the original stems. You can hear that on the excellent A-side version of 'Shimmy Shimmy Ya', which boasts fatter drums, a more DJ-friendly intro for mixing and - more surprisingly - a fresh second verse lifted from a completely different record. The version of 'Brooklyn Zoo' has some additional percussion, too, giving the jam even more weight than it had first time around. Given that the original was bass-heavy but relatively percussively light, beefing up the beats was definitely a smart move from Big Mac.

Review: Tyler, the Creator's fifth studio album was produced entirely by the Californian artist himself, but it does feature guests like Solange, Playboi Carti, Kanye West and Lil Uzi Vert. It immediately debuted at number one and it's easy to see why. Rich with a complex fusion of funk, rap and r&b that glides on Cali-synths and neo soul melodies, the whole thing is tethered to the ground with a hefty low end and follows the narrative of a love triangle as told by American comedian Jerrod Carmichael. Arguably his best work to date, the production is next level and storytelling wholly involving.

Check It Out People (reissue)
Cat: SSR 218. Rel: 18 Jan 21
  1. Beastie Boys Vs MFSB - "Check It Out People" (4:19)
  2. MFSB - "People All Over The World" (dub) (4:08)
Review: The latest edition in DJ Soopasoul's "Soopastole Edits" series looks like it may fly off the shelves, and with good reason. The lead cut is not an edit per se, but rather a crafty, clever and expertly produced mash-up that places selected rap flows from the acapella version of Beastie Boys classic "Ch-Check It Out" over a tightened up and fattened up rearrangement of MFSB's disco-era jam "People All Over The World". Sometimes these kinds of mash-ups can be messy, but this genuinely isn't, with the Beasties' vocals fitting the backing track like a glove. Over on side B Soopasoul shares his tweak of the MFSB track, which is entirely instrumental bar periodic use of the band's female backing vocals. In a word: ace!

Check It Out People
Check It Out People (white vinyl 7" limited to 200 copies)
Cat: SSR 218WHITE. Rel: 14 Sep 20
  1. Beastie Boys vs MFSB - "Check It Out People" (4:19)
  2. MFSB - "People All Over The World" (dub) (4:11)
Review: On his last two singles on Soopastole, mash-up maestro DJ Soopasoul smashed together elements of Stevie Wonder and Redman/Method Man, and James Brown and Crooklyn Dodgers. For his latest trick he's decided to pepper an edited version of "People All Over The World" by Philadelphia Soul legends MFSB, with raps from a stone cold classic Beastie Boys tune. It's the sort of thing that shouldn't work, but the Beasties' flows work perfectly over the flanged guitars, undulating bass and unfussy 4-to-the-floor Philly Soul grooves of the MFSB track. You can hear his instrumental rework of that track on the flip; it's so good that it's arguably worth the entrance price on its own.

Review: Originally issued back in 1998, Mezzanine remains the most commercially successful album released by Bristol troupe Massive Attack, thanks in no small part to the Liz Fraser-featuring "Teardrop". This third album signalled a change in sonic direction that played more explicitly on the darkness and tension that was always an undercurrent of their much loved debut Blue Lines and successor Protection. After numerous bootlegs over the years, Virgin have done the right thing and presented this official reissue of Mezzanine to appease fans of Massive Attack and it's clear the LP has lost none of it's bewitching power. The Quincy Jones and Isaac Hayes sampling "Exhange" and "Exchange" remain a delight in particular.

Review: He may now be a bona-fide global celebrity with a string of books, TV shows and film appearances to his name, but Action Bronson remains a fine rapper - even if we don't hear those skills as much as we once did. If you still need convincing, check out Only For Dolphins, his first album on two years. His love of trash talking, tall tales and classic boom-bap style flows has not changed, but his subject matter is more varied. The beats he raps over have evolved significantly, too. Over the course of the album, there are fewer bog-standard "golden era" type backing tracks; instead, you'll find killer beats that offer nods towards Brazilian samba and MPB, reggae, smoky jazz and Latin music.

Toxic Funk Vol 3
Cat: BBP 182. Rel: 24 Sep 20
  1. Beastie Lifestyle (4:34)
  2. Without Funk (4:28)
Review: More Toxic Funk flavours from the Breakbeat Paradise crew, who've cannily snapped up a couple of killer collaborations from Prosper and Badboe. The experienced pair predictably goes in hard on A-side 'Beastie Lifestyle', where a classic Beastie Boys acapella is slapped down hard on a brand-new heavy funk-meets-breakbeat backing track that comes laden with mazy electric piano solos and fiery horns courtesy of Le Marabout. They change tack slightly on 'Without Funk', joining the dots between a handful of killer samples on a P-funk flavoured workout that's every bit as addictive and ear-pleasing as the duo's A-side banger.

Review: Legendary hip-hop beat maker and unrivalled MPC master Pete Rock has long ruled the world with his Petestrumentals series. For this third instalment he links with his newly formed band The Soul Brothers and serves up all original material that is mature, soulful and sweet while retaining plenty of Pete's trademark craft. The tracks are often painfully good thanks to a perfectly placed neo-soul vocal or some superb jazz drumming. 'Swag' is a slower tune that will free your mind of any clutter and 'Heavy' is a more rousing, jazz fleece number with some fine horn leads.

Review: First things first: the world has come a long way in its attitude to women since this album was first released, so in 2019, 2001 sounds - at least lyrically - wrong on many levels. But it is also still very right when it comes to g-funk, west coast rap and second wave hip hop sounds. Listening to it from start to finish is to spend 90 minutes as a fly on the wall of the lives of Snoop, Dre, Eminem and all the rest of the high profile guests. Jam packed with classics and gold standards, this is an album of its time but one that was never bettered.

Review: Since debuting on Bromance in 2013, Kaytranada has become one of the leading lights on the future R&B scene. Given his track record, it's understandable that there's plenty of hype surrounding 99.9%, his long await debut album. The 15-track sees him showcasing the depth and variety of his beat making, production and compositional skills. Thus, the string-drenched jazziness of "Bus Ride" is followed by the off-kilter R&B pop of "Got It Good", and the Onra-ish synth-hop soul of "One Too Many" sits side by side with the double bass, Rhodes and Latin-influenced beats of "Despite The Weather". It's pretty expansive, clocking in at 15 tracks deep, but the quality never dips throughout. Recommended.

Review: Having previously worked with SBTRKT, Kanye West, Drake, Jesse Ware and Frank Ocean, amongst others, Sampha is no newcomer. This, though, is the British singer, songwriter and producer's debut album, and it's something of an understated gem. One particularly enthusiastic reviewer called it "an R&B album for the ages"; while that may be pushing it a bit, there's no denying that Process is an impressive collection of tracks. The beats are inventive, the electronics crisp, the samples carefully chosen, and the musical touches pitched just right. At the centre of it all stands Sampha, delivering thoughtful, heartfelt and sometimes poignant lyrics in his wonderfully evocative voice.

Review: Young Turks clearly believe that Tahlilah Barnett, formerly known as Twigs (hence the FKA Twigs pseudonym) is a star in the making. They plucked her from obscurity last year and have since released a number of highly regarded singles. This debut album expands on her EPs to date, showcasing her woozy, intricate take on post-R&B. Naturally, her vocals - fragile and evocative, sounding not unlike Kate Bush on occasions - take centre stage, riding a bed of layered-up head-nodding rhythms, post dubstep grooves, trip-hop soundscapes, fizzing electronics and bubbling synthesizers. It's an intoxicating brew, all told, and one that delivers further proof of Barnett's immense potential.

Review: Edan's debut album Primitive Plus was first released by Lewis Recordings back in 2002. Somehow, since then, it has never had a vinyl repress. It is a direct descendant of the golden era of hip hop, a record that sits with greats like Big Daddy Kane, Kool Keith and Slick Rick. Packed with not only innovative production, but also rhythms that are both intricate and sophisticated, it's filled with storytelling that will keep your mind as busy as your hips. Favourites here include the low slung 'Syllable Practice', twisted 'You Suck (feat Father Time)' and hard cut beats of 'One Man Arsenal.'

Review: Mr Bongo come through once more with a first UK issue of this slice of hip-hop history. It is the lead single from Main Source's Breaking Atoms album and is one of two such 45s the Brighton label, shop and archivists are putting out. Undisputed rap classic 'Looking At The Front Door' goes first and ride son nice loose drums with oft sampled bass and off course some fine MC work. On the flip is another gem, 'Let Roger Do His Thing', which is darker, more hard hitting and with some DJ scratching for extra streetwise sagger.

Review: What You Gonna Do When the Grid Goes Down? is a mash up of tunes from a free album and plenty of classics. As such it bangs for hardcore fans but doesn't offer much new for anyone else. Guests like George Clinton and Cypress Hill, Mike D, AD Rock & Run DMC and DJ Premier all help make each track standout and the powerful likes of 'State Of The Union' will always need t be heard nice and loud, especially the line 'fear the combover' which is a perfect anthem for the outgoing 45th President of the United States. Review: The Street Knowledge "45 series" appears to have been set up to educate heads on original 1990s hip-hop jams, or at the very least deliver fresh pressings of some seriously classic cuts. This inaugural release begins with Warren G and Nate Dogg's 1994 heater "Regulate", a deep and seductive number that makes great use of samples from Michael McDonald's teary blue-eyed soul classic "I Keep Forgetting". Flip to the B-side and you'll find Luniz 1995 hit "I Got 5 On It", a cut that's been bitten, reworked and re-made umpteen times in the 24 years that have passed since it was first released. As this reissue proves, the Oakland duo's original version is still streets ahead of the rest.

  1. Raphael Saadiq & Q TIP - "Get Involved" (3:17)
  2. Q TIP - "Vivrant Thing" (3:16)
Review: First released way back in 1999, Raphael Saadiq's Q-Tip-sporting "Get Involved" is a warm and woozy, retro-futurist chunk of soul/hip-hop fusion that harked back to an earlier musical age. It remains an arguably underappreciated dancefloor bomb and here gets the reissue treatment courtesy of the freshly lauched 45 Jams imprint. It comes backed by another stone cold classic from Q-Tip, "Vivrant Thing" - a cut first featured on the flipside of the Tribe Called Quest member's much more celebrated "Breathe Don't Stop" single. It's a little more stripped back than the A-side, with Q-Tip delivering his distinctive flows over a crunchy and fuzzy, Jay Dee produced backing track crafted from samples from an old funk record.

  1. Crooklyn Dodgers (feat Buckshot & Special Ed & Master Ace) (4:30)

Review: Crooklyn Dodgers have had three different incarnations with members including Mos Def, Memphis Bleek, Masta Ace, Buckshot and Jeru the Damaja, making them something of a hip hop supergroup. They recorded soundtracks for Spike Lee films in 1994 and 1995 and always muse on topical subjects from urban life in New York City to there state of social and political affairs. Buckshot, Masta Ace and Special Ed was the line-up when they laid down their first single "Crooklyn", a sweet rolling bit of classic boom-bap with fluid vocal flow, then Chubb Rock, Jeru the Damaja and O.C came together for next single "Return of the Crooklyn Dodgers" which makes the b-side here. It's a piano laced late night jam with soul to spare and slick DJ Premier production.

Once again the American heavyweights call on a big roster of collaborators with DJ Premier, 2-Chainz, Pharrell Williams and Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme all appearing. The tracks remain hard-edged and direct, with cacophonous synths and oversized hits making each track an attention grab. The rhymes are of course on point throughout, with standouts including the machine gun bars of 'Walking in the Snow'

Because I Got It Like That (Record Store Day 2020)
  1. Because I Got It Like That (4:43)
  2. I'll House You (3:45)
Review: Here's something for those looking to fill in the gaps in their classic hip-hop collection: a sizzling seven-inch boasting two of the Jungle Brothers hottest hits. On the A-side you'll find "Because I Got It Like That", a lolloping party hip-hop jam built around an assortment of complimentary samples, most notably a lift from Sly and the Family Stone's killer cut "You Can Make It If You Try". Over on the flip you'll find one of the most recognizable dance anthems of the late '80s, the early hip-house classic that is "I'll House You". Based on Todd Terry's similarly big "Can You Party", the tune is a warehouse-ready bounce-along that sounds as fresh now as it did way back in 1988.

Flipping it from a woozy, Faze-O sampling day dream into a full-on nocturnal block party, XL lives up to his name again. Meanwhile on the B, C Scott provides the same uplift to '(When The) Music Is On' giving it a crisp swing and organ hook that's not dissimilar to Ugly Duckling. Keep on ridin'.
