Botanic Minds Sunset Series
Botanic Minds Sunset Series (limted 180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: BMSS 008. Rel: 27 Jul 20
  1. Track001A (8:04)
  2. Track002A (Lizz remix) (8:00)
  3. Track001B (8:18)
  4. Track002B (Barut remix) (7:47)
Review: The mystery of the Botanic Minds Sunset Series continues to unfold with another bout of surreal and sensual club tracks that balance tweaked minimalism with a warm and hazy atmosphere. "Track001A" is packed with intricate rhythmic interplay, but it's the fluttering guitar licks and displaced vocals that give the piece its unique vibe. "Track002A" is a remix credited to Eastenderz regular Lizz, and it's a particularly spellbinding jam shaped out with lingering chords and a wistful mood. "Track001B" hunkers down around a low, throbbing bassline, but there's some sweet keys hovering up top to keep things from getting too dark. Barut is on hand with a remix for "Track002B", where trancey undercurrents meet with expansive piano and ethereal ambient swells, all strapped to a sturdy minimal house groove.

  1. N-You-Up - "Vibin" (Saison remix) (6:44)
  2. Saison - "One Day" (7:15)
  3. N-You-Up - "Jazz Bar" (Saison remix) (5:56)
  4. Saison - "Sazerac" (6:21)
Review: Saison are back on their own No Fuss label with more crisp and sweet deep house for those who like it classic. The A side opens up with an energizing sure shot as Saison remix French house head N-You-Up, before they turn in the equally infectious and uplifting "One Day". N-You-Up get another treatment on the flip, as "Jazz Bar" gets snazzed up with a classy gloss of sophisticated house suitable for the smart-casual crowd as well as the party people up front. Saison's own "Sazerac" rounds the record out in fine jacking form, with plenty of soulful licks and jazzy twists woven in between the beats.

Never Come Back/Sister (Floating Points remixes)
Never Come Back/Sister (Floating Points remixes) (limited 12") (1 per customer)
Cat: SLANG 50299. Rel: 31 Jul 20
  1. Never Come Back (Floating Points remix) (9:00)
  2. Sister (Floating Points remix) (7:07)
Review: Having already seen his synth-pop-meets-piano-house gem "Never Come Back" successfully remixed by Four Tet and Morgan Geist, Dan "Caribou" Snaith has now handed over the parts to Sam Shepherd AKA Floating Points. While those versions retained the core elements of Snaith's warm and ear-pleasing original mix, Shepherd has chosen to re-imagine it as the kind of positive, spacey, musically detailed and rushing late night deep house jam with which he originally made his name a decade ago. It has serious sub-bass weight, too, and is one of his most impressive club-focused outings for some time. It's worth buying the 12" for that mix alone, but his wonderfully deep, sub-heavy, garage-influenced rework of another "Suddenly" album track, "Sister", is also superb. In other words, you need this in your life.

  2. Pushing On (dub) (6:55)
  3. Pushing On (Jesse Rose 'live From The Villa' remix) (6:25)
  4. Pushing On (Tchami remix) (5:03)
Review: Oliver Dollar sure knows how to make dance floor bait. His rough edged and lo-fi house is infused with plenty of funk, soul and disco cues, as well as plenty of well found samples. He is a perfect mix for Defected and here link with Jimi Jules for the easy to love and heart felt grooves of "Pushing On." As well as a dub, Jesse Rose serves up a 'live From The Villa' remix that has big, bouncy kicks and hard edge claps softened by a big diva vocal. Tchami then closes out with the most peak time and pumping of the lot.

Never Come Back (Four Tet/Morgan Geist remixes) (limited 12") (1 per customer)
Cat: SLANG 50298. Rel: 31 Jul 20
  1. Never Come Back (Four Tet remix) (7:57)
  2. Never Come Back (Morgan Geist remix) (7:25)
Review: When Caribou, Four Tet and Morgan Geist appear on the same 12", you know it's going to be huge. And it is. First up, Kieran Hebdan takes "Never Come Back" and warps the bass, builds plenty of tense percussive energy and layers in some sci-fi synths that take the track into the next dimension. It's epic, as is always the way with Hebden, and ripe for some rave reactions. Cult neo-disco innovator Morgan Geist does something completely different - his drums skip and ping, with a breathy and soul drenched vocal next to lush cosmic chords. It's bouncy, playful, brilliant.

For this 2 volume series Andres flexes his blunted downtempo beat-driven side, complete with his primo cut skills celebrating our favorite red, white, and pink libations. Both volumes feature 3 instrumental hip-hop beats, cut loud at 33.3 rpm, pressed with love at Archer on Detroit's east side, and housed in the MotorCity Wine company 7" jacket.

Still We Are EP
Cat: HOD 027. Rel: 21 Jul 20
  1. Synthesize (7:31)
  2. Wilde Touch (7:10)
  3. Still We Are (7:00)
  4. Positive Emotion (feat Danielle Moore) (5:26)
Review: Three years on from his latest solo outing, Crazy P founder member Chris Todd AKA Hot Toddy returns to House of Disco with a predictably fine four-tracker. Our pick of a very strong bunch is the toughened up, revivalist electrofunk flex of "Wilde Touch", where clipped guitar riffs, crunchy Clavinet lines and colourful melodies ride a rubbery bassline, though the Paper Recordings-era Crazy P deep house/disco fusion of "Still We Are" is almost as impressive. Speaking of Crazy P, lead singer Danielle Moore lends her distinctive vocals to the Imagination-ish Brit-boogie business of "Positive Emotion", while the EP's other track, opener "Synthesize", is a darker and more spaced-out chunk of weighty, bassline-driven nu-boogie goodness.

  3. The Blaxploited Orchestra - "Ready To Go"
  4. The Blaxploited Orchestra - "Explicit"
Review: Spanish label Mate are back with more excellent house cuts from different corners of the scene. The endlessly prolific Javonntte is in control on the A side, sounding as iconic as ever with the rousing thump of "Quantom". "Mr DJ" is a more soulful track with a catchy vocal hook you'll be humming to yourself for weeks after hearing it. On the flipside, Simon Garcia's The Blaxploited Orchestra is in heavy edit mode on "Ready To Go", bringing a full-frequency funk and sizzling house drums to the fore with a classic sample or two. "Explicit" has a lower tempo, allowing even more space to sink into the pocket and feel the groove from start to finish.

  2. Michael James & Benjamin Joseph - "The Island" (7:53)
  3. TIJN - "Maybe" (5:52)
  4. Nick Beringer - "Nyx" (6:32)
Review: The next airdrop from the good ship Constant Black is a various artists affair with four tracks from four artists guaranteed to find a home in your extended micro sesh. Pascal Benjamin takes the lead with "Falkhill", locking into a Romanian-flavoured minimal breaks formation that rolls in resplendent fashion with a particularly choice vocal lick from an undisclosed RnB track. Michael James and Benjamin Joseph nudge the pitch fader up and dial in the swing for the decidedly funky wiggler "The Island", and TIJN keeps things bumping but works in some sharper drum sounds for the tough but bouncy "Maybe". Nick Beringer finishes the record off with the chunky funk of "Nyx", calling to mind Mike Shannon amongst others.

Cat: TOKO 6. Rel: 29 Jul 20
  1. Gumbo (9:52)
  2. Custard Gannet (6:03)
  3. Gumbo (Blooty mix) (6:01)
Review: Here's a welcome surprise: a reissue of one of the most revered records in the back catalogue of sadly departed Sheffield deep house imprint Toko. This 1997 gem is actually an all-star affair, with Klarky Cat (a reference to legendary satirical show Brass Eye) being a collaboration between Chris Duckenfield, Toko bosses Alec Greenhough and Paul Ingall (better known as Attaboy) and influential, overlooked Manchester producer Si Brad. In. its original form, "Gumbo" mixes the wavy, loved-up dreaminess of classic deep house with the organ sounds of U.S garage and the swinging, occasionally glitchy drums of early UK tech-house. It comes backed with a darker, chunkier and more foreboding rework (the mesmerising "Blooty Mix"), and the bright, acid-flecked sunrise giddiness of rather good bonus track "Custard Gannet".

Review: Back in the 980s everything Pete Heller and Terry Farley touched turned to go. So much so that ensuing generations continue to connect with their work and now Defected invite a wealth of new school producers to add their own spin to the huge "Ultra Flava". David Penn goes for a hands in the air, festival version, a 2016 version from the artists themselves gets more twisted but keeps its vibes 90s bassline in tact, then Darius Syrossian goes harder and faster with his sweaty rework. Low Steppa & Johan S go for a thoroughly modern rework with shuffling drums.

Cat: EGLO 041. Rel: 08 Jul 20
  1. Nuits Sonores (11:57)
  2. Nectarines (6:21)
Review: Sam Shepherd has long been a master of the kind of ultra-deep, rolling, soft focus deep house that raises the spirits and soothes the soul. Even so, there's something incredibly special about "Nuits Sonores", the lead track from this must-have EP. Based around a deep, tactile groove and blessed with rising synth solos, dancing acid lines and his usual fireside Rhodes antics, the track rises magnificently for 12 spellbinding minutes. As it progresses, further elements make their way into the mix, until it reaches the kind of organic deep house climax that makes even the grumpiest souls go weak at the knees. Flip for "Nectarines", the kind of loose-limbed fusion of deep house sassiness, Detroit techno electronics and fluid jazz drumming at which Shepherd has always excelled.

  1. Chicago (7:16)
  2. Spinnin (7:41)
Review: The second release from the newly emerging If It Ain't Jazz label comes from Swedish producer Opolopo. For this one he takes two classics from the jazz-disco world and adds his own distinctive spins. The results soar into the stratosphere on golden chords and humid pads, funky drums and gliding grooves. Both are timeless reworks that will do plenty of damage on a wide range of dance floors. This marks another noteworthy release for this small but well formed label.

Cat: CMC 288RED. Rel: 16 Jul 20
  1. Calling Out (7" edit) (5:39)
  2. Calling Out (7" edit instrumental) (5:35)
Review: Former Paper Recordings artist Sophie Lloyd apparently started working on "Calling Out" whilst gripped by the January blues. Her intention was simply to make "happy music". To that end, she turned to her gospel roots. The results, shared here on 7" single for the first time, are little less than spectacular. With collaborator Dames Brown in tow, Lloyd's vocals - accompanied by a gospel choir, of course - simply soar above a jaunty, piano-heavy track rich in live instrumentation. It sits somewhere between traditional gospel, house and disco, with a flipside instrumental brilliantly showcasing the quality of the instrumentation throughout. The piano solos, in particular, are breathlessly good.

The Unofficial Edits & Overdubs Special Extended Versions Part Three
  1. Tears Of Joy (10:44)
  2. Al's Razerblade (3:50)
  3. Morning (7:22)
  4. Life On Earth (5:25)
Review: The third part of Joe Claussell's Joaquin Unofficial Edits & Overdubs series is as strong as the first two with four Special Extended Versions making for some joyous listening. "Tears Of Joy" is rapturous house music with gospel overtones that canto fail to bring the soul. "Al's Razerblade" is a lo-fi funk mash up with a strident rhythm section and "Morning" is golden soul with soaring strings that brings some 60s magic to the dance floor. "Life On Earth" is the steamiest of the lot, with tropical sounds and mad jazzy chords all laced with wild percussion that bristles with energy.

  3. Beautifully Equipped (6:13)
  4. Troopcafe (6:13)
Review: Producer and keyboardist Jon Dixon lands on his own 4EVA 4WRD label with some timeless house tracks that bring all his majestic melodic skills to the fore. "Times Of Change" (feat De'Sean Jones) is a mellifluous, comically minded cut with a fantastic lead sax and bubbly chords, and "Move 4WRD" (feat Britt Frappier) then gets more fluttering and percussive, with flappy hits and dreamy vocals making for a light and airy groove. There are dancing synths and lush astral colours on "Beautifully Equipped" but closer "Troopcafe" might be the best of the lot with its deft, arching pads and shimmering broken beats.

  1. Alex Attias & Justin Chapman & Hajime Yochizawa - "The Message (For You)" (10:00)
  2. Alex Attias & Mark De Clive Lowe - "The Waiting Game" (7:57)
Review: Since -re-establishing his early noughties Visions Inc imprint in 2017, Swiss scene stalwart Alex Attias has delivered some of his most impressive and musically dexterous material. He's at it again here on a two-tracker that showcases his love of studio collaboration. Our pick of the pair is exuberant, life-affirming A-side "The Message (For You)", a sublime slab of loose-limbed Latin house soulfulness featuring vocals from Justin Chapman and keys-work from Japanese artist Hajime Yochizawa. Attias' old pal Mark De Clive-Lowe lends a hand of equally positive and sparkling flipside "The Waiting Game", adding all manner of jazz-funk inspired sound synths to a fine, rubbery deep house workout.

  4. Send My Love (4:52)
Review: Those with long memories might just about remember the early noughties work of Aqua Bassino, the pseudonym of choice for Edinburgh producer Jason Robertson. During that period he released a string of dreamy, atmospheric and thoroughly luxurious deep house EPs on F Communications, the best of which has now been reissued as part of the Parisian label's 25th anniversary celebrations. Check first the drowsy chords, fluid piano solos, undulating bass and Latin-tinged grooves of "Milano Bossa", before admiring the trumpet-laden, St Germain style brilliance of "Welcome Home (Live Mix)". Elsewhere, "Send My Love On" is a sunnier slice of dreamy deep house warmth, while the impeccable "Na Na's Waltz" is a poignant chunk of downtempo piano jazz that many (rightly) consider to be a chill-out classic.

  2. Red & Blue (Deep Explorer remix) (7:33)
  3. Behind The Scene (5:39)
  4. Mind Games (6:52)
Review: There are nimble, rolling grooves aplenty to be enjoyed on the second drop from Mahal for Inner Shift. Of course, these grooves are framed within the context of moody, meditative soundscapes where you're as likely to hear some squalling guitar as you are spooky keys - that's certainly the case on stunning opener "Red & Blue". Deep Explorer comes on board for a remix that feeds some loose and limber breaks into the mix, which match the dusty feel of the track perfectly. "Behind The Scene" weighs in with a powerful bass presence and some classic box beats, capturing some serious Detroit-inspired energy in the process. "Mind Games" completes the record with a dreamy excursion into airy pads and submerged arpeggios to get you floating skywards.

Review: For those that pay attention to these things, there's been plenty of talk on the margins about The Pilotwings, a young Lyonnaise duo whose first two EPs on Brothers From Different Mothers got tongues wagging. Here they step up to Macadam Mambo, delivering an EP nominally inspired by classic Chicago house, but with clear Japanese, African and classic electro influences. Analogue sounding, inventive and hard to accurately pigeonhole, Une Nuit Aux Boxboys is a thoroughly engaging and entertaining affair. Highlights are plentiful, from the twittering new age melodies and snappy percussion of "Le Stabisme De Richard" and exotic shuffle of "Cerisier", to the "Promised Land" bliss of the more obviously Chicago-influenced title track.

Review: Like its numerous predecessors, 16th edition of Z Records' long running "Attack The Dancefloor" series is packed to the rafters with tried and tested dancefloor treats, most of which have never appeared on vinyl before. First up, Saison tackles Akabu's 2001 classic "Ride The Storm", turning it into a deep, bouncy and rubbery chunk of lilting, string-drenched house goodness, before Dr Packer delivers a subtly tooled-up take on The Love Symphony Orchestra's grandiose and sexually-charged 1978 disco classic "Let Me Be Your Fantasy". Label head honcho Joey Negro provides a superb deep disco rework of one of his own productions, the Sunburst Band's 2004 summer sing-along "Everyday", while Art of Tones' "Flower Child" is a flash-fried, disco-funk romp laden with superb lead vocals from Anduze.

This is unfortunate, because as usual Alex 'Omar' Smith has hit the spot. The six untitled tracks are impressively varied, with Smith effortlessly moving between 21st century P-funk (track one), cowbell-powered deep house funk (track 2), sparse and synth-heavy acid house hypnotism (track three), disco-house jack (track four), sub-heavy Detroit-meets-Sheffield minimalism (track five) and sunrise-ready dancefloor dreaminess (track six).

  1. OG Chunker (4:36)
  2. Let's Get This (6:38)
  3. Turn That (5:09)
Review: Berlin-based rising star Sally C has decided to launch a label, the brilliantly named Big Saldo's Chunkers, with a debut EP of tracks she made after listening to copious amounts of turn-of-the-90s hip-house. The standout track - though the standard is uniformly high - is probably the sweaty and bustling A-side "OG Chunker", where bubbly motifs and rap vocal snippets ride a rolling, thickset groove. "Let's Get This" feels and sounds like a tribute to both hip-house legend "Fast" Eddie Smith and the more muscular style of "Sound Factory" house popularized by Junior Vasquez, while "Turn That" is a wonderfully low-slung and pumping affair that comes on like Mr Lee's "Pump Up Chicago" for the Boiler Room generation.

  3. A Dance For Gratitude (Joaquin's Congo Arts Drum version) (7:15)
  4. It All Began In The East (The Cosmic Arts Meditational mix) (3:18)
Review: Two years ago, Joaquin "Joe" Clausell donned his occasional Mental Remedy alias and offered up "A Journey To Noi", a decidedly spiritual album that mixed Japanese instrumentation with his usual ambient and deep house sounds. On this 12", Clausell offers up some heady new interpretations that - like much of his work over the last decade - are built around the percussive power of African rhythms. The opening "Sacred Rhythm Version" of "It All Began In The East" is particularly potent, with Clausell cloaking a warm, organic and percussive Afro-house beat in distinctive Japanese Koto melodies and jazzy piano flourishes. We'd also recommend the formidably heavy, drum-laden rework of "Dance For Gratitude", whose Latin American bassline and simmering synth-strings are almost as addictive as the weighty groove they sit upon.

Review: Over the last decade, Large Records has concentrated largely on digital releases, though their occasional vinyl outings - and specifically the "Wax Weapons" series of compilation style EPs - are rarely less than essential. Volume three kicks off via the chunky, bass-heavy bounce and fizzing, Todd Edwards style cut-up melodic snippets of Scott Diaz and Timmy P's "True Blue", before Never Dull takes us further towards classic deep house territory courtesy of the bustling brilliance of "United, Under One Roof". Elsewhere, Finest Wear's "That '90s Groove" is an ear-pleasing slab of 1990s U.S house revivalism, while Colorjaxx's energetic closer "One Night In The City" adds Mike Dixon/Greenskeepers style filtered jazz samples to a chunky Chi-town beat.

Review: Having dropped digitally a few weeks back via his own Bubbletease Communications label, Maurice Fulton's latest album as Boof has finally landed on wax courtesy of Gerd Janson and Running Back. It's worth picking up, not least because Fulton's musical vision is so vibrant and distinctive. Over two slabs of wax, the Sheffield-based American delivers a swathe of ear-pleasing, off-kilter deep house numbers laden with colourful synthesizer sounds, jazzy electric piano stabs, opaque chords and rubbery bass guitar. There are of course plenty of interesting and oddball diversions to be found throughout (see "Ana's F Is Chillin", the intoxicating and exotic "Japanese Indian Shrimp Curry", and the totle track's kaleidoscopic space jazz), as well as a handful of ultra-percussive peak-time beasts (see "Luam Has Found Her Z").

Overcome/Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)
Cat: TR 11:11. Rel: 16 Jan 19
  1. Overcome (9:08)
  2. Lady Science (NYC Sunrise) (9:24)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: relik returns with a repackaged edition of one of the catalogue's most treasured releases. "Overcome" and "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)" need little introduction, and now come sporting the new TR11:11 matrix number. Written and produced by Thomas Melchior and Baby Ford aka Soul Capsule, these tracks came from one of the many sessions recorded at the West London Ifach Studio in 1999. On the A Side "Overcome" is stripped back and energetic, driven by rolling and shuffling garage style beats, tight bubbling bass and atmospheric synth pads. The intermittent vocal samples and the release's signature organ set you up for the flip, "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)". Possibly one of house music's most emotive pieces, the track builds slowly with the introduction of each part building a story of soulful optimism based around a sparse palette of deep synths, uplifting keys and warm analogue bass. The understated beauty of the main vocal riff never seems to grow old or tired with the track lending itself perfectly to either main room, peak-time play or after-hours sessions alike. Remastered by Rashad at D & M.

  4. Rebel Nina (1:24)
Review: Here's a special club 12" for serious heads dealing in a set of mixes of "Blackbird". You have to come correct when you dare step to Nina Simone, but you know full well the cast of characters assembled on this 12" can be trusted with the high priestess of soul. Timmy Regisford is up first, bringing some intense organ lines and Lately bass into the mix with a perfect balance between jubilant expression and tension. Joe Claussell then steps up with two different edit and overdub versions, where the organs get poured on more liberally and the whole jam boils over. As a wonderful bonus element, you get a powerful acapella monologue from Nina Simone to close out the B side.

Review: Ted Amber first surfaced with an impressive 12" on minimal lynchpin Botanic Minds back in 2018. Now he's back on Romana with a new joint that maintains a seductively deep mood throughout, but still knows how to jack where it counts. The undulating synth tones of "808" get carried through to Magnus Asberg's ranging, steady building remix, while TIJN creates a delicate and detailed tapestry out of the ingredients to complete the set. For classy and consistent variations on a warm, mellow house theme, look no further than this deeply satisfying drop from the Romana crew.

Review: It's a while since we last heard from Knopha, a well-regarded rising star who impressed with his first two EPs on Push & Pull and Eating Music. Here he returns to action via a label debut on the freshly minted Chinese imprint Regret Sound. It's an attractively percussive, off-kilter and curiously psychedelic affair, with Knopha offering up two distinctively different tracks based around the same basic Afro-house style tribal rhythm track: the hallucinatory and feverish ambient house humidity of "Gym A", and the even more spaced-out, drum-heavy weird-out that is "Gym B". Bonus cut "Stretch", a drowsy, chiming and warming drift through echoing synth-ambient territory, is also superb. Recommended.

  1. Track 1 (9:11)
Review: Madonna, Depeche Mode and Kelis - what do East End Edits have in store for us next? This seventh instalment harks back to the charming deep jazzy house of their inaugural release - think of the legendary St. Germain and that should give you a fairly good idea. The track's smoky, late night jazz bar vibe is complemented by a rolling bass and swinging rhythms that should appeal to the likes of Rhadoo or Petre Inspirescu - legends of the Romanian scene who themselves have lent their deft hand to the French producer's work as remixers in the past, too.

Moment EP (reissue)
Cat: GUDU 001RE. Rel: 03 Mar 20
  1. Starry Night (6:40)
  2. Han Pan (6:42)
Review: Given her runaway success in recent years, it was almost inevitable that Peggy Gou would launch her own record label sooner or later. Wisely, she's chosen to kickstart said imprint - the freshly minted Gudu Records - with her first EP of fresh material for over 12 months. A-side "Starry Night" is an unashamedly positive and life-affirming affair, with Gou placing bouncy piano riffs, sultry South Korean and English vocals and Boyd Jarvis/Paul Simpson style synth-bass atop a snappy, late '80s style house rhythm. There's a similarly retro-futurist feel to the equally loved-up "Han Pan", where Gou's attractive vocals once again catch the ear alongside heavy analogue bass, chiming synth lines and Kwaito influenced drums.

  1. It Makes You Forget (Itgehane) (6:35)
  2. Hundres Times (6:54)
  3. Han Jan (6:21)
Review: Berlin-based Korean Peggy Gou has been surprisingly quiet since first bursting onto the scene back in 2016. Here, she returns to action having graduated from Technicolour to parent label Ninja Tune. Many may already have heard EP standout "It Makes You Forget (Itgehane)", a percussively ambidextrous beast based around a bouncy, off-skilter, snare-heavy rhythm track. It has been much discussed online after Gou included it her recent Resident Advisor podcast. On the B-side you'll find tracks representative of her developing style, which draws together elements of European deep house, electro, early '90s U.S house, the rubbery disco eccentricity of Maurice Fulton and the instinctive polyrhythms more often found in traditional African music.

Review: Shall Not Fade boss KW has decided to launch a new "Season Series" sub-label featuring "music associated with the season of release" and matching coloured vinyl. Fittingly, the inaugural release delivers suitably sunny, summery deep house jams from Fine regular Tilman, naturally pressed on to marbled, sky-blue vinyl. Musically there's much to enjoy across the five tracks, from the jazzy, sample-heavy bounce of bumpin' opener "Nature Yourself" and the sweet, carnival-ready loop-house hedonism of "Photon Dust", to the drowsy, blue-eyed soul sampling afternoon warmth of "Just A Motion Away" and the yearning, flute-sporting dancefloor dreaminess of "Blurred Chase".

Mind Power EP (Diego Krause remix)

  1. Mind Power (5:44)
  2. Get Deepy (6:36)
  3. Acid Shuffle (6:20)
  4. Acid Shuffle (Diego Krause remix) (6:33)
Review: Italian producer St. David has spent the past few years issuing some serious house tackle for the likes of Quality Vibe, Let's Play House and Theory Of Swing, and now he's up on Politics Of Dancing with some of his strongest jams to date. "Mind Power" is a driving peak time bomb with a lofty sense of spirituality lingering behind the thump of the drums. "Get Deepy" is unsurprisingly geared towards a mellower time of the night, but it's no slouch in the groove department. This is a Politics Of Dancing record after all. "Acid Shuffle" keeps the shimmering pads and marries them to a vintage drum machine jack, which Diego Krause reworks into a wholly different kind of tripped-out house wobbler.

  3. Surge (7:20)
  4. Throb (7:13)
Review: DJ Steaw and Gunnter's Rutilance Recordings has been going strong for a couple of years now. Their M.O.? Spreading the gospel of deep house, we'd guess! They're doing pretty well on that front then. Paris producer Janeret produces sexy music for night people. Fans of Dessous or Dogmatik should take note. First track on the A side "Heat" features a bouncy synth bassline and rich synth and pad tapestries reminiscent of UK legend Jimpster. "Straightaway" features uplifting organ stabs and a tough swing fuelled beat, perfect for those peak time moments. On the flip "Surge" keeps on with the uptempo vibe, injecting some vocals, razor sharp synth leads and that bass; so bouncy! Finally he throws us a right curveball with the liquid drum and bass of "Throb" summoning the spirit of LTJ Bukem, and damn well!

Review: This is a red hot new funk 12" for the super cool Jackie Brown label. It features Marcello linking up with Antonio Rapa on drums and Blake C.S. Franchetto on the bass and they are all on fire across these high speed cuts. "Welcome" is tight and driving as you like, with cosmic keys taking flight, "Shark" is more playful and lush with eve more astral vibes and then things take a turn into late night sounds on the golden "Malo Pivo". "Brooklyn" expires the sort of broken beat you'd find in London's underground and "Chilly" closes with rich jazz stylings. Overall, this is an excellent 12".

Review: To launch their new collaborative imprint Locus, Enzo Siragusa and FUSE have turned to Italian rising star (and INFUSE regular) Koko. The resultant four-tracker ix attractive and ear-catching, with Koko moving from hip-shaking summery deep house swing (the rather lovely chord progressions and drowsy female vocals of "Chantal", featuring Quelle Rox), to the UK garage-goes-deep house warmth of "Amor Ante Hominem Nascitur", via slick smoothness of "Your Ass, My Camel Blue" and the tough, bumpin' chunkiness of revivalist UK garage number "Love In Plexiglass". It's the latter, a pitch-perfect cap-doff to Grant Nelson rich in jazzy bass and dreamy vocal snippets, that hits home hardest.

  3. Mihail P - "Momentum"
  4. Mihail P - "Neon Hologarden"
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Serenity is a new label geared towards raising money and awareness around mental health in the music industry. The label kicks off in fine style with the supple, expressive techno of John Shima and Mihail P offering up two tracks each. Shima takes the A side with the warm and bubbling synth expressions of "Seasons" before taking things in a more hypnotic direction on the ever-so-slightly trancey "Hunter Mind". Mihail P maintains a similar vintage techno sound palette, but pings for positive constellations with the jubilant "Momentum" before veering into blissful breakbeat on "Neon Hologarden".

  2. Down With The Rhythm (4:55)

Review: You have to admire Alex Warren AKA Kiwi's work rate. Here he makes his Kompakt bow with his eleventh EP since the start of 2018. Vocalist Bestle guests on superb A-side "Hello Echo", a spacey chunk of lilting nu-disco/synth-pop fusion that's so deliciously warm and summery that we believe it will become a sing-along anthem before the year is out. He shifts focus a little on B-side opener "Down With The Rhythm", a more sleazy, analogue-driven affair that sits somewhere between Chicago style acid-jack, effervescent NYC freestyle and bold, 21st century nu-disco, before offering a deep, melodious and melancholic take on acid-electro that could well be the most arresting, ear-catching moment on an EP that's full of them.

Review: Just as the new football season settles into it's groove, the fourth edition of the highly collectable Rothmans arrives sporting some high profile signings! Leading the way on The Claudio Gentile Release is a Foolish Felix dub of Cage & Aviary's "Lean On Me" whose deranged acid gurglings provide a nice contrast to the thrusting Escape From East London stylings of Posthuman's "Make More Men". On the flip Ali Renault returns for Rothmans duty with the Weatherall worthy "The Black Heart" whilst Iron Blu is loaned from Flight Recorder for the synthy swamp of orchestral drama that is "Oiche Shamhna"
