Because Of A Flower
Because Of A Flower (LP in die-cut sleeve)
Cat: KRANK 230LP. Rel: 14 Dec 20

  6. Venus (7:38)
  7. Take The Thorn, Leave The Rose (5:59)
Review: Ana Roxanne is no stranger to gender discourse. 'I'm Every Sparkly Woman', which appeared on her 2015 debut EP, was a re-reading of the iconic Whitney Houston - Chaka Khan cover, and a celebration of modern femininity and empowerment which later became about loving yourself irrespective of gender as Roxane came out as intersex. Now ready with her second full-length album, identity is never far from the table.

Opening with a spectacular spoken word piece told through multi-tracked voices, we're given an introduction of layers, shades and connected musical phrases that's at once abstract but coherent - the complexity of life on record, perhaps? From there we explore everything from Gothic choral to ambient, New Age and dream pop. The result is highly affecting, sublime stuff you sink into slowly and never want to get back out of.

  10. Acid Aliens - "Demons In The Closet" (4:02)
Review: Last year, the new beat-loving diggers behind the Musique Pour La Danse label stumbled on something rather bizarre in a second-hand shop: an erotic VHS video from 1989 whose soundtrack was a direct copy of legendary new beat LP King of The Beat, a fake 'compilation' where every sleazy, mid-tempo, mind-altering cut was in fact written and produced by the same trio of Belgian studio buffs. So, they've decided to reissue that LP as Erotiques New Beat, adding extensive liner notes from new beat scholar Geert Sermon, and pressing it to shocking neon pink vinyl. It's a fine set full of distinctively odd, druggy, acid-flecked and synth-heavy cuts, most barely known outside of new beat collector circles. It's well worth picking up.

Review: Italian composer Gadi Sassoon debuts on A Strangely Isolated Place to present newly created sounds and abstract atmospheres. The Multiverse LP was created and composed on an immersive eight speaker surround sound setup, combined with analogue synths and live instruments in his Milan studio, plus incorporating his groundbreaking synthesis work as part of the NESS Project in Edinburgh. From moments of glistening, textured ambience as heard on 'Life On A Tidally Locked Planet', to moments of wonderfully organised chaos heard on 'Young's Modulus' which soon leads into the glassy-eyed and bittersweet neo-classical epic 'Chaos & Order' and ending with final descent into a cavernous abyss on the haunting 'Moto Perpetuo'.

Review: Route-8 is a Budapest producer and this is his much anticipated debut LP. But the story is that it almost didn't happen because the original album was lost when the artist and his fellow Lobster Theremin crew had all their stuff knocked in Detroit while on tour of the US. However Route 8 began re-piecing the record back together and thankfully here it is. It's an album of causing house and techno tunes indebted to the sound of the American mid-west. Far sighted pads, deep beats, balmy ambience are all present and correct and make this a mini classic.

Review: The Late Night Tales mix series - going strong since way back in 2003 - never ceases to both amaze and please our eardrums when they're in need of a sonic massage. With legendary artists such as Fatboy Slim, Jamiroquai, Groove Armada, MGMT and many others on their roster, you just know it's going to be quality throughout. This time it's up to Domino man Jon Hopkins to give us an outlook onto his own tastes and musical influences. The selection is vast and varied, with everyone from Four Tet to Darkstar and even Peter Broderick featuring within. An incandescent blend of sci-fi electronica, tropical bass nuggets and lighter shades of drone-fuelled house. Quality.

Review: Past Inside The Present is an American ambient label based in Indianapolis, with a focus on ambient, ethereal and minimal music by prominent artists from across the globe. Their next one comes courtesy of prolific Spanish producer Pepo Galan from Malaga (El Muelle Records) with Berlin-based choreographer Sita Ostheimer. The pair have collaborated in one way or another since 2015; Galan having composed music for her dance creations, and Ostheimer recording her delicate vocals for several of his solo albums. Ostheimer's evocative vocal delivery is perfectly accompanied by Galan's mellowed neo-classical tones and restrained flourishes of electronics, for an altogether seductive and poignant listening experience.

Review: The latest chapter in the (ahem) storied history of Tim Story has been unveiled in the form of the very first chapter, which - thanks to the confusion and chaos of music - never saw the light of day when it was prepped for release back in 1983. Impressively, the level of attention to detail we have subsequently come to expect from the Americana electronic composer is evident from the initial bars of opener 'By A Thread', testament to his natural talent.

Refusing to date even with the 40 year wait (give or take), Threads is a spectacularly forward-thinking collection of modern classical-infused ambient, heavily reliant on deceptively powerful walls of sound masked as quiet tones - take the eerie chimes of 'The Moors' or the emotionally captivating piano chords on 'Burst', for examples. But it also embraces the drones of electronica as we know it today, hence the synth refrains of 'Without Waves'. Ahead of its time.

Her two self-released cassette albums "Water Memory and Mount Vision" may well have passed you by when they first snuck out in 2017 and 2018 respectively, but fortunately the ever-tuned-in RVNG Intl. are taking care of business and gathering these two wonderful releases together and presenting them as a beautifully packaged long playing release. This is the kind of delicate ambient material that suits both mindful immersion and environmental mood setting, emanating harmony and balance at every turn.

Review: Second time around for Julianna Barwick and Rafael Anton Irisarri's lauded contribution to the THESIS label's series of collaborative 10-inch singles. The 2017 set has been in high demand since it first appeared in stores, and with a limited number available outside the US for the first time we're expecting it to sell out in double-quick time. Musically, it's one of the most picturesque things that Irissari has been involved in. The untitled opener delivers a near perfect fusion of layered improvised vocals and wispy ambient electronics, while the track that follows brilliantly builds to a crescendo of Tangerine Dream style arpeggio melodies, densely layered textures and acid-esque motifs. The flipside opener is a more softly spun, deep ambient soundscape, while the EP's closing cut is sparkling, spacey and hugely alluring.

Review: According to the artist himself, Zake's first solo album of 2020 was recorded and produced during "a four-day excursion in several secluded areas" in South Carolina. As a result, listeners can expect to hear babbling brooks, birdsong and the gentle rustling of leaves beneath Zake's alluring mixture of enveloping ambient chords, unearthly drone tones, opaque electronics and slowly-shifting, heavily processed neo-classical movements. The results are hugely immersive and undeniably enjoyable, with each of the four tracks delivering a head-in-the-clouds journey that ripples with becalmed, atmospheric intent. In other words, it's the kind of ambient music you can get lost in. More please!

Review: To tie in with the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landings, Brian Eno has decided to put out a new edition of his decidedly spacey 1983 ambient album "Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks", which started life as the soundtrack to a long-forgotten documentary about NASA's space program. The edition is rather special, not only because it contains a remastered version of the original set created by Eno, his brother Roger and regular collaborator Daniel Lanois, but also because it contains a second disc of previously unheard material. This is not old, though, but rather brand new recordings - described as "new interpretations of the film soundtrack" - made by the Lanois and the Eno brothers late last year in a similar style. In a word: essential.

Review: As Autechre set out on an extensive live tour, Warp has decided the time is right to reissue their 1994 classic, Amber, on vinyl. Given that it's been unavailable on wax since then, and second hand prices have shot through the roof, this is undoubtedly a good thing. It remains one of the legendary duo's standout albums: a peerless collection of brilliant IDM tunes offering a perfect balance between the glistening, atmospheric melodiousness of their early work, and the crunchy, mathematical rhythms of their later releases. There are moments of eyes-closed calm ("Silverside"), bubbly, melody-led workouts ("Montreal", "Slip"), far-out electro missives ("Glitch"), and the odd icy epic (the brilliant "Further").

Review: To say Fading is a work that feels dense would be an understatement. The latest from German ambient dub don Pole is a dedication, or perhaps more accurately a meditation on his mother's descent into the confusion and uncertainty of Alzheimer's, the neurological condition that - to put it mildly - is currently responsible for stealing the identity from 10million people in Europe alone.

It's a concept that has been attempted before, with varying outcomes and in a multitude of styles. Here, though, you can't help but feel a large part of the approach centres on our feeling of sinking deeper into crackling, fizzing and popping arrangements that are at once minutely detailed and beguiling. Things make sense overall, but when we listen carefully to the dark, immersive electronics at play, we're not quite sure how the various noises come together to create something so familiar. Exceptional, if tragic stuff.

Review: Up until his death in 2003, Hiroshi Yoshimura spent decades offering up immaculate albums that blurred the boundaries between ambient, new age and minimalism. For those not versed in the Japanese ambient pioneer's vast catalogue, 1986's "Green" - which is here reissued by Light In The Attic - remains one of his most impressive works. Created using a minimal number of instruments (mostly synthesizers and electric pianos), the set is as quietly jazzy as it is relaxing. Highlights include the meditative, Terry Riley influenced bliss of "Feel", the pulsing organ stabs and blissful electronics of "Sheep", the garden-ready musical hug that is "Green" and the swelling opener "Creek".

Review: Having similarly impressed us this month with Pepo Galan & Sita Ostheimer's powerful opus Contact, Zach Frizzell's Indianapolis-based imprint Past Inside The Present returns with enigmatic producer Pallatte, on an impressive debut entitled the Pathways. Said to be produced by the artist during an introspective period of his life, these four uncanny yet contemplative loops evoke emotions and themes best described so succinctly by the label itself as "a universal desperation and yearning for hope in a dispirited civilization." Features additional production by Texan musician Damien Duque, who also appeared on PITP earlier this year as part of Dawn Chorus And The Infallible Sea.

Review: Canadian minimal veteran Tomas Jirku has been a little quiet of late, but now he makes a welcome and unexpected return with something quite different for Silent Season. You can hear echoes of his earlier work in the soundscapes he's sculpted across Touching The Sublime, as high-definition sonic manipulation draws on his experience and eye for detail in wielding music technology, but rather than creating pointillist rhythmic structures, he's more concerned with billowing clouds of ambience. It's easy to draw parallels with the likes of Tim Hecker, but there's space for more techno-oriented productions in the midst of the maelstrom. Epic in scope and powerfully rendered, this is an album that will feed your head for a long time to come.

Bioluminescence (heavyweight vinyl LP)
Cat: AI 16. Rel: 16 Oct 19
  1. Track 1 (19:02)
  2. Track 2 (19:11)
Review: Another month, another essential release from Astral Industries. The label's latest missive comes from DeepChord man Rod Modell and friend Walter Wasacz's Shorelights project, a partnership that has previously resulted in two fine albums of "soft noise and groovy ambient techno". Their latest missive comprises of two lengthy and undeniably immersive tracks that combine atmospheric field recordings (babbling brooks, crackling radio static etc.) with heavily processed electronic textures, slow-burn synthesizer melodies and chords so enveloping you could probably use them as a blanket. It's hard to get a handle on just how seductive and soothing the album is from the brief clips showcased here, but we can guarantee that "Bioluminescence" is a hazy, horizontal treat from start to finish.

Review: Multi-instrumentalist and composer Naliah Hunter's debut, 'Spells', is a much-needed slice of ambient fantasy. The project began as an "exercise in reclamation" over her own musical motivations, and resulted in a 6-track ritual in which each piece represents a different kind of magic spell.

Like protective water, air and fire charms, Hunter takes on many incantatory roles. She is a vocalist, harpist, and synth player. Her harp, in particular, takes centre stage; the calming wind spell 'Quiet Light', for example, is an embellishment of scale flourishes and dangling chimes.

Hunter likens her studio to an altar, taking ritualistic care to light candles and incense while creating. Like the track 'Talisman' - with sprinklings of midrange tones, relieved breaths and interpretive semi-lyrics - her music is intended for healing. A chunk of the album's proceeds are being given to the Loveland Foundation, which provides therapy for young black women.

Like beautiful but dissolving memories, every track fades out only after around two minutes, like the effusive wispiness of an apprentice wizard's practice. Speaking to KEXP, Hunter noted that her 'spells' had the express purpose of "creating locations away from here"; they are specifically "transportation spells". Fantasy has always been a genre of escape; like a timid fairy or Harry Potter snitch, the EP flits past in a wonderful plume of magic smoke.

Review: Andrea Porcu's ROHS! label has been a long time fixture in the ambient field, from net label origins to limited CDr and vinyl releases from a host of respected underground operators. This latest release, two years in the making, features two original tracks from PURL. These sublime ambient pieces, "Slow Poem" and "Cellar Door," move in slow, atmospheric ripples of submerged rhythm and glacial melodics, giving plenty of space for inventive remixes from Segue, Wanderwelle and many more. It's a perfect double pack of dreamy drifters for the chill-out room crowd to sink into.

Review: Hakobune returns to the label with this beautiful 3 song LP. These songs have been with me for the last few months and have been such a comforting presence during such a tumultuous time. 3 blissful pieces for guitar with gentle overlapping tones and field recordings, ending with the glorious side-long piece oichi. I've listened to this more times than I can count this spring, and I'm so happy to share it with you all.

The pieces are named after rivers and streams near the artist's home, places of solitude.

  3. Senpuuki (8:17)
Review: This might be one of the most beautiful records you'll buy all year, largely because of its silk-screened sleeve art that seems to hypnotise the moment you look at it. Don't take that to mean the music is any sort of let down, though - the three tracks here are deeply complex but never obtusely challenging, highly original but familiar enough to pull in a broad range of ears.

For the uninitiated, experimental musician Iku Sakan and Muneomi Senju, best known as the drummer from Boredoms and Urichipangoon, are legends of the Japanese underground, and as such this is a veritable meeting of acclaimed genius minds. The results are highly percussive and rhythmic non-bangers, from the mechanical arrangements of "Green Journey" through to "Senpuuki"'s singular ear worm tone.

Review: Rams was the name of Gary Hustwit's 2018 documentary about cult German industrial designer, Dieter Rams. He chose Brain Eno to soundtrack it and the legendary studio wizard stepped up in fine fashion. Now all 11 unreleased instrumentals are served up with full colour inner and outer sleeves on heavyweight vinyl. Some are superbly tender and empty ambient pieces that float you in space and time and others are more melancholic and broody. It is yet another fine entry into the ever impeccable discography of one of the UK's greatest living musicians.

A Rainbow In Curved Air (50th Anniversary Edition)
Cat: MOVCL 046. Rel: 17 Apr 19
  1. A Rainbow In Curved Air (18:41)
  2. Poppy Nogood & The Phantom Band (21:18)
Review: Originally released way back in 1969, Terry Riley's "A Rainbow In Curved Air" album remains one of the minimal maestro's most significant works. Crafted using overdubbing techniques, the three-movement title track features Riley playing layer upon layer of electric organ and electric Harpsichord motifs to create a hypnotic, Indian style raga. It was hugely influential at the time - inside and outside of the emerging minimalism scene - and later influenced the ambient and ambient house movements. Here it gets the audiophile reissue treatment, with the title track once again being joined by original flipside "Poppy Nogood & The Phantom Band" - a trippy wig-out in which Riley pays tribute to soprano saxophonist John Coltrane over more hypnotic, fast-past organ refrains.

Review: The Ninja Tune renaissance has been underway for around a decade now, with the UK imprint, founded by Coldcut way back when, firmly cementing its status in the techno, rave and future bass world post-millennia. So good is the heavier end of the stable output we really needed Julianna Barwick to come along and remind us of the imprint's more delicate moods. Known for her deep compositions that look to celebrate, explore and consider the human voice in its many facets, 'Healing Is A Miracle' is a perfect calling card for the artist in question. Utilising a spine-tingling vocal range, and taking us directly into worlds where sound itself is a form of art, not just when arranged, the record was apparently born from an improvisation session on her looping equipment, which in turn directs the construction of the individual tracks. The serene but complex, minimal but layered and heavily textured work of a synth siren.

Review: The godfather of electronics, Brian Eno makes a return to Warp Records. Lux, literally meaning "light", is a delicate assortment of subtle harmonics and chimerical programming. As with all of Mr.Eno's work, all of the elements seem to share an inseparable union with each other, one which manifests a specific concept. "Lux 1" is the sound of a new day, with its gentle notes playing over a majestic soundscape beneath it; whilst "Lux 2" enters more desolate grounds, where melodies are dissolved and remoulded to create a spine-chilling sea of sound. "Lux 3" is a similarly meditative musical zone, where notes remain deserted in a melancholic whirlpool of sub-drones; but "Lux 4" is the radiating light at the end of the tunnel - atmospheric and full of emotion.

Review: Glen Velez is perhaps not a household name, but let Emotional Rescue change that with this wonderfully curated collection of works from a masterful drum devotee. Velez has Latin American roots, and he has performed since the late 60s in New York, but his interest in percussion spans the globe and all kinds of hand drums. His respected techniques have been snapped up by collaborators like John Cage and Steve Reich, not least thanks to the advanced polyrhythmic modes he operates in. Don't be fooled though - this isn't just a drum record. Accompanying musicians shape out the hypnotic percussion in a variety of transcendental moods that make this an invigorating listen start to finish.

Review: Trailed as a direct sequel to his previous solo album, 2017's "Avanti", "Volume Massimo" sees Nine Inch Nails member Alessandro Cortini offer up another immersive trip through droning guitar textures, repetitive synthesizer motifs, exotic sitar parts and fuzzy electronics. It's effectively a series of "maximal" instrumental soundscapes with sounds so large and layered they rise above the "meditative" tag pushed by Mute's PR team. This is no criticism, though, just a reflection that while contemplative at times, one of the most joyous things about the album is Cortini's ability to build thrilling walls of sound.

Review: Belated vinyl issue of the excellent second LP from Musiccargo for the Dusseldorf fanatics! It may well be the seventh release on Emotional Response, but the label happy Stuart Leath will tell anyone in close proximity that the Musiccargo pairing of Gerhard Michel and Gordon Pohl were largely inspirational in his decision to start the label. Probably most widely known for the early appearance on James Holden's DJ Kicks mix of their remix of "Disco" by Grackle, Musiccargo are modern day exponents of the Krautrock sound pioneered by Dusseldorf acts like Can, Cluster and Neu. Harmonie arrives some four years after the duo's highly sought after debut album Hand In Hand and the six track album is a sumptuous 'adult kraut' delight from start to end.

Review: While you'll find plenty of experienced composers and producers on A Strangely Isolated Place's quietly impressive roster of artists, the Californian label is also excellent at showcasing new talents. They're at it again here, offering up a debut from previously unheard Sardinian artist Blinkar Fran Norr. The eight tracks tend towards the more becalmed, meditative and immersive end of the ambient spectrum, with Norr prioritizing swelling, stretched-out chords, hushed aural textures, atmospheric field recordings, ghostly strings and unearthly instrumental sounds that invite you in for dinner and then persuade you to stay for the weekend. It's beautiful and beguiling, for sure, but also touched with a hint of sadness. As debuts go, it's really rather impressive.
