25 Years Of Metalheadz: The Series Part 1
Cat: MDZ25 001. Rel: 15 Jan 21
  1. Up All Night (remastered) (10:30)
  2. Up All Night (Data 3 remix) (8:35)
Review: Ahead of a full compilation later in the year to mark the 25th anniversary of one of the most important labels in electronic music, we're treated to a series of special 12"s from it. John B is the man behind this one and a newly remastered version of his 'Up All Night' is presented first up. It's a hardcore old school tune with tough metal stabs and thrilling basslines that duck and dive through the rave. The Data 3 remix is broad, sweeping and just as direct but with a more spacious set of breaks powering you along.

Its Over
Its Over (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: VIVID 01. Rel: 06 Jan 21
  1. Its Over (6:02)
  2. We Rewind (6:03)
  3. Slow Down (6:02)
  4. Pick Up Roll On (6:15)
Review: Blazing out of the blocks with a sound fully charged for the breakbeat revival, Yosh inaugurates Vivid with this appropriately vibrant set of UK bass music belters. Taking the best elements from jungle, garage and more, lead track "It's Over" bursts forth in a cascade of rolling drums before the moody sub bass stylings of "We Rewind" takes over. Things get a little more aquatic on crafty tripper "Slow Down", and then the drums come right to the forefront of the mix on crisp and deadly EP closer "Pick Up Roll On." With impeccable production values and a liberal dose of UK rudeness, this is an essential fresh grip for anyone wanting some fresh jungle derivatives in their lives.

  7. Lenzman - "Walk On By" (Satl remix) (4:55)
  8. Redeyes - "Untitled Soul" (4:10)
  9. FD - "Top2Bottom VIP" (6:27)
Review: The North Quarter label serves up nine exclusive tracks on this superb double LP which is the culmination of many years friendship of Lenzman & Dan Stezo. The former lays down the seamless flow while the latter delivers perfectly introspective lyrics in a heart aching falsetto and all the tunes are solely from The Northern Quarter associates. The liquid drum & bass grooves are soulful and soaring, with plaintive pianos draped over the silky sequences. It's a warm and emotive listen for days at home as well as once dance floors open up again. Favourites include Zero T & Unitsouled's frictionless 'Slightest Moment' and FD's deep diving closer 'Top2Bottom VIP.'

The Welsh drum & bass innovator has been there since forever, and as a result is rightfully one of the most iconic names in the game. A master of melodic, melancholic jungle and hardcore sounds with a harmonic heart, he returns here with a mighty sixth album on his beloved Hospital Records. Notes From The Underground takes all his usual motifs and evolves them subtly with help from gusts such as Kae Tempest, Anita Blay, UK Apache, Ady Suleiman and more.

2010 Again (12")
Cat: CNVX 016. Rel: 13 Jan 21
  1. 2010 Again (6:52)
  2. Diazedaze (5:30)
  3. Pivot (8:04)
  4. Thoughtcast (6:08)
Review: It might be 2021, but in the world of Kid Drama, it's 2010 Again. That's theme of the producer's latest missive for CNVX, which smartly joins the dots between '90s tech-step, late noughties D&B experimentation (think classic Exit releases and so on) and deeper shades of electronica. The result is an action-packed set that giddily skips between the weighty, hard-wired peak-time heat of '2010 Again', the hot-stepping deep D&B pleasantries of 'Diazedeze', the warped basslines, sunrise-ready aural textures and fluttering chords of 'Pivot' and the skittish, post-apocalyptic hustle of closing cut 'Thoughtcast'.

  8. Fessio (3:33)
Review: The third instalment of Planet Mu boss Mike Paradianas' Bantha Trax series features eight previously unreleased tracks hailing from the sessions that gave birth to his acclaimed Lunatic Harness album of 1998. Drill and bass was the name the press came up with at the time, describing a marriage of scattergun jungle and drum and bass techniques applied to relatively gnarly, industrial sounds from the outer edges of the rave planet, and it fits the bill here. That said, the album's final two tracks, 'Generate Tusks' and 'Fessio', veer away from the breakneck breakbeat madness into the slightly more electro/techno slanted territory that the first in the series, released on short lived but much loved label Clear, had featured. Still, not for the faint hearted, but fans of Paradinas' uncompromising approach will surely lap up this unexpected portion of seconds.

TEOE Remixes 2
Cat: CRM 245. Rel: 22 Dec 20
  1. It's A Lot (Calibre remix) (5:49)
  2. Only God Can Tell (LCY remix) (6:14)
  3. 7 Known Truths (Flynn remix) (3:16)
Review: You could do a lot worse than this when trying to find an EP that hits its nail on the head of a British dance music scene in late-2020. Drum 'n' bass mogul Krust offering up his originals for a trilogy of remixes that represent a breadth of noises, not to mention some pretty strong emotions - from frustration and anxiety to reflection and rave-y love.

Starting with the latter, fellow 170-don Calibre delivers a typically soulful, warm, liquid cut that's always going to have broad appeal. Bass experimenter LCY does the opposite, all abrasive EBM sounds and intense, broken rhythms, with Flynn stepping in for the final part of the triptych - a classy slice of sparse and system-troubling dubstep. A very strong selection that's going to keep a variety heads interested.

  1. Goblin Shark (3:23)
  2. Portal (3:41)
  3. Just Words (3:59)
  4. Nebula (4:43)
Review: Lucid Dreams EP is a new Ep from drum & bass artist Satl. He hails from Poland and here pushes himself out of his usual confront zone by exploring a range of dub techno influences on Amsterdam boutique label The North Quarter. The six tracks are all brooding and tense with emotion but are also hugely elegant, with slippery rhythms, dubbed out caverns and watery droplets bring detail. It's heady music but with a powerful low end that will also do damage in clubs. "This EP to me is an exploration of a sound that I've loved for some time, but never really felt confident enough to attempt," he says, surely now happy that he has in fact mastered the style.

Review: We all taking up right about now and Yosh is the one to do it. Four crucial cuts flexing around the UKG/breaks axis, all heavily entrenched in the turn of the century breakbeat, dark garage melting pot. Classic vocal samples galore and really punchy drums, highlights include the classic "What I Need" and the pure kick drum militancy of on the title track "Take Me Up". Serious vibes for all ages and all floors.

Review: The Classic Symptoms series is all about Hospital serving up the finest moments from their rich back catalogue. This is the 13th such instalment and features four more perfectly nostalgic jams from drum & bass kingpins S.P.Y, Keeno, Nu:Tone and LSB. All of these will send you right back to the 2014-2016 era in which they were made. 2. FD & Total Science - "True North" (4:33)
  3. Timberline (6:04)
Review: FD keeps on serving up those super sweet heavy rollers with a new missive for CIA. The producer is already well loved by the label and for good reason: he's a master of his craft, here stepping through the gears after opening up with the rinsing brass and free falling abs of 'First Sound', which is simple but hugely effective. 'True North' (with Total Science) keeps on that same tip - economical but efficient sounds that encourage you to jump up. Lastly, 'Timberline' is a red hot, techno tinged tool with darker intent, but just as good an effect on all who hear it.

Review: The roustabout previously known as dRamatic returns to Kemet with four more authentic jungle bruisers. 'Vanity' sets skank phasers to stun with its sweet and sour chops between sunny-side reggae samples and rambunctious breakbeats. 'Hey Boy' follows suit but with a big diva vocal adding the smooth polish to the roughhouse breaks. Flip for more ruffage as 'It's Like' brings on the big soul swoons over more finely diced and spliced breaks and 'Final Sound' shuts us down with a bubbling, beat-focused groove that wouldn't go amiss in Breakage's current armoury. Savage.

  4. Awkward Demise (6:34)
Review: Some folk are widow makers. Other folk are widow made. Bad to bone types who dish out breaks so brutal they should come with a medical health warning. Not that you'd pay much attention to it; beats like these are too good to miss out, regardless of health. Courtesy of Dead Man's Chest's Western Lore, it's four tracks of total rave annihilation; the bubble gun basslines of "Television", the icy unforgiveness of "The Kingdom", the prangy hardcore steps and swampy weirdness of "Deep Within There Is Nothing" and the dark finale "Awkward Demise". Some records are party starters. Other records are party made. Badness.

  1. Dance System (5:09)

  4. End Theme (6:45)
Review: Moscow-based producer Marco Lazovic has scored a few significant releases over the past five years, landing on Lobster Theremin and appearing alongside Minimal Violence on a cassette release back in 2016. After Funkyjaws' opening missive, DJ Craft's Craft Music label has invited Lazovic to throw down his bold and brassy take on soundsystem dynamics in a modern context. This is mellow, melodic music with a hefty bottom end touching on red-lining electro and electronica in equal measure, slipping into ambient jungle territory here and there and overall creating a delightful trip for the mind, body and soul.

  3. Jinx & Run Tingz Cru - "Lava Mouth" (feat Junior Morgan) (4:09)

Review: Watch your basins, cause this one is not mucking about - it is a freeform collision of reggae, dub, ragga, jungle, drum & bass and more. Run Tingz Cru open up with 'Beautiful World (Nothing Wrong)' (feat Anthony B & Da Fuchaman) and reach for the skies with rinsing breakbeats, breakdowns that drop the tempo, and drops to below the doors off. Audiomission & Subcriminal expire a drake more stripped back drum & bass sound complete with ragga vocals and then Jinx & Run Tingz Cru step it up again to send the club into overdrive as the horns keep on going off like gun shots.

Review: Those interested in the roots of UK bass music have been well-served of late, with a number of books and compilations focusing on the first wave of British dance music in the late 80s and early 90s. Soul Jazz's latest compilation is a superb addition to this growing list. It showcases music made in the post-bleep and early breakbeat hardcore period, where basslines got bigger, drum breaks faster, and ragga influences started to come to the fore. The selections are on-point throughout from the dub-wise rave rush of Babylon Timewarp's "Durban Poison" and the bleep-and-breaks-meets-proto-jungle shuffle of DJ Dubplate's "Tings A Go On", to the rave-rap goodness of The Freaky's "Time & Age" and the heavily edited darkcore/early jungle insanity that is Krome & Time's terrific "Ganja Man". In a word: essential.

Review: Having scaled the heights of global superstardom over the last decade, Chase & Status last year returned to their more roughneck D&B roots with RTRN II JUNGLE, their retro-futurist fourth studio album. Here they continue that trend via RTRN II FABRIC, their first contribution to the legendary London club's popular DJ mix series. Full to bursting with high-octane Amen breaks, bowel-bothering sub-bass, punchy rhythms and MC flows, the mix sees the long-serving twosome pack 44 killer jungle and D&B cuts old and new into just under 80, all-action minutes. As you'd expect, it's packed with exclusives too - not least a wealth of unreleased Chase & Status productions and 'VIP' dubplate versions. If you love jungle and D&B, you need it in your life.

Review: A new Lone album from Matt Cutler represents an about turn away from the more mellow tones found on 2014's Reality Testing back in favour for the rave tropes that characterised his output circa Pineapple Crush. The nine tracks on Levitate are rife with the energetic fervour of hardcore and jungle, blending peppy tempos and nimble drum licks with the trademark graceful melodies one would expect from a Lone record. You should be familiar with "Backtail Was Heavy," already been premiered via a phone line service and "Vapour Trail" which formally announced Levitate and the other seven cuts from Lone show Cutler is at the top of his game.

Review: Hospital reach for the reload as their collectable Classic Symptoms series continues with another blast from liquid past. And this one's especially a hoot; all taken from that sweet spot around the mid 2000s, every cut still sparkles with that raw sample-heavy vibe the label was best known for. Logistics' 'City Life' and its melancholy pianos take us back to his debut album in 2006, Total Science's Q Project went full on organ back in 2005 to tremendous effect on 'Obsession' while London Elektricity's 'Fast Soul Music' remains the blueprint for his signature to this day. Last but not least the seminal filtered fire-up 'Soul Function' from Danny Byrd. Old but liquid gold.

Review: Following his appearance on the last 'Glow' collection, Integral welcome young Bristol talent Fluidity to the family with his first full EP. Living up to his name, he takes us from deep soul to deep space across the whole EP. 'Still Hope' is a smouldering lament laced with a Perezian tension, 'Yes Or No' slips on a little black number and purrs in your ear, 'End Game' flips the switch entirely with an all-out turbo drone tear-up before 'Hold Tight' takes us home the scenic intergalactic route. A highly accomplished debut. Stay hopeful.

Inflorescence Pt 2
Inflorescence Pt 2 (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: WRX 11. Rel: 05 Aug 20
  1. ZBlossom (5:20)
  2. Away With The Fairies (8:04)
  3. On Me (5:48)
  4. Wiara (8:44)
Review: The big FS on Warehouse Rave to dark up the dance with the second part of his "Inflorescence" release. As always, it's a heavyweight affair... "ZBlossom" sets the agenda with a proper old school 93 type of feel. Big humming subs and twisted pitches on the breaks. It's backed by three more bumpy trips; "Away With The Fairies" is all about those early Krome & Time vibes, "On Me" is fast lane jazz that nods at the early 2000s Sao Paulo sound and shades of Soul:r while "Wiara" shuts us down on a straight up butt-wriggling jungle breakbeat vibe. Your mother warned you it's a Fiesta Soundsystem banger.

Mind Signs
Mind Signs (white vinyl 10")
Cat: AKO 10009. Rel: 16 Dec 20
  1. Mind Signs (6:15)
  2. Trust (4:56)
Review: The AKO label has dropped not one but two super sweet 12"s this December. After one from Immortal Minds comes this equally smooth and seductive roller from Specialist X. 'Mind Signs' is a classic soulful gem - the pads are airy and golden, the drums as smooth as silk and the vocal is an aching one from a tender male. 'Trust' then follows suit with more cosmically minded and frictionless liner grooves, this time punctuated with the odd broken kick pattern and icy hi hats that dangle in the air. Both will carry you away to a better place.

No More Mind Games
No More Mind Games (translucent pink vinyl 10")
Cat: AKO 10010. Rel: 16 Dec 20
  1. No More Mind Games (4:59)
  2. Lost In Love (4:33)
Review: Immortal Minds makes a fantastic debut here on the AKO label with a pair of beautiful soulful tracks that are perfectly at home on this label. They come on fuchsia pink transparent vinyl that's nearly as nice as the tunes themselves. 'No More Mind Games' is super smooth, the deft design and subtle motifs that peel off the groove providing lyle anchors as the beats roll on a heart aching vocal soars up top. 'Lost In Love' then pairs a vocal you will recognise with super spacious drums and cosmic synths that are directly from the heavens. When it drops, you're locked in for the ride and there's nowhere you'd rather be.

Cat: UM 25. Rel: 02 Dec 20
  1. Coded (4:54)
  2. Tap The Bottle (5:01)
  3. Tidal Wave (5:21)
Review: The late Andrew Lawrence recorded as Andy Skopes before losing a long battle with cancer at the start of 2019. Utopia Music was one of his regular homes and now the label has this posthumous collaborative EP with Madcap landing just in time for xmas. Soulful, rolling grooves are the order of the day on this super sweet 12". 'Coded' has a meaning baseline darting about the mix, with slightly eerie pads up top, but the whole thing serves to get you in a trance. 'Tap The Bottle' is more tender, with vulnerable chords and heartfelt vocals and 'Tidal Wave' closing down with rich, low sling bass and twinkling keys.

Brain Music EP (includes remixes by Slick Shoota and House of Black Lanterns)
Cat: MODRU 004. Rel: 13 Apr 15
  1. Brain Music
  2. Wet
  3. Brain Music (Slick Shoota remix)
  4. Wet (House Of Black Lanterns remix)
Review: Skubi steps into the limelight with his debut release for Modern Ruin, an imprint reserved strictly for the finest in footwork killers. "Brain Music" is basically a modern hip-hop lick with cavernous low-ends and that familiar juke vocal stutter. The same goes for "Wet", a relatively darker, dreamier sort of affair. Remixes comes from none other than Slick Shoota and House Of Black Lanterns, the former opting for a jungle swing while the latter twists and funks that juke into an even nuttier bundle of drums and percussion. Large.

Blueprint
Blueprint (12")
Cat: ODY 011. Rel: 16 Dec 20
  1. Blueprint (10:01)
  2. Broken Image (5:57)
  3. Low-Tech (5:33)
Review: Original 90s drum & bass label Odyse keeps on showing the others how to do it with a second solo EP from label partner Andy Odysee. His sound remains true to the roots of the imprint and to the music from Source Direct and Mirage which helped establish it in the first place. Opener 'Blueprint' has crisp, steel plated and militant drums and a groaning, paranoid bassline down low that keeps you on edge. 'Broken Image' cuts more loose, with far sighted pads disappearing off the horizon as silkier drum loops get you locked. The most dark and involved of the lot is 'Low-Tech', but an achingly gorgeous female vocal sounds keeps things getting all too macho.
