I Believe In Miracles (3:30)
No Nos Pararan (6:48)
Review: In 2011, Banda Achilifunk & OJO served up Gitano Real, one of the year's most essential albums. It was caned far and wide by funk lovers, in particular Craig Charles on his 6 Music show. Now, two cover versions taken from the essential album have been pressed to limited edition translucent yellow vinyl. First up, 'I Believe in Miracles' is an overwhelming take on the Jackson Sisters classic with plenty of happy Latin vibes and rumba funk rhythms. Flip it over for a more abstract version of McFadden and Whitehead's seminal 'Ain't No Stoping Us Now' which is a soulful disco number packed with sunshine.

Ain't No Stopping Us Now (3:03)
Review: Second time around for Banda Achilifunk and Original Jazz Orquestra's sought-after 2011 cover of disco classic "I Believe in Miracles", original copies of which now change hands for serious sums online. The expansive Spanish crew's baggy, sun-kissed and rumba-soaked Latin disco cover of the Jackson Sisters' classic is perfectly pitched, adding layers of crunchy Clavinets and punchy horns to a sumptuously summery groove. Over on the flip we get two different takes on McFadden & Whitehead classic "Ain't No Stopping Us Now": a decidedly Balearic Spanish language cover ("No Nos Pararas"), and an instrumental cover full to bursting with superb grooves and even more scintillating horn solos.

Oldchap - "I Want To Show You" (5:16)
Alexny - "Not Bad" (5:36)
Review: The Moiss Music label seems to like to drop their EPs two at a time. They did it in February and they're doing it again in May. This eighth outing collects four more lively disco cuts, each with their own subtle influences. Berobreo's 'White Rabbit' for instance has funky undertones with loopy guitar riffs and nice breaks. The Magic Track's 'Jamming With Mom' meanwhile is more sensuous and deep, with late-night synth work and seductive vocals. Oldchap's 'I Want To Show You' has an expressive soul vocal with more low-slung grooves and Alexny's 'Not Bad' then gets quick, clipped and loopy for its lip-pouting disco thrills.

Burnin' Beat (It's Hot) (11:00)
Searchin' (10:21)
Review: It would be fair to say that the Afro Synth label has dug deep for this latest reissue. Little is known about Burnin Beat, an obscure South African disco outfit who released their sole 12", It's Hot, on RPM way back in 1979. They're a great example of an outfit that, for whatever reason, fell through the cracks. The title track, a lolloping, 11-minute disco workout rich in fluid synth lines, rubbery slap bass, sparring instrument solos and the powerful vocals of Olive Masigna, is something of a long-lost gem. Original flipside "Searchin" is almost as good, with Masigna adding a touching vocal to a backing track that pushes the band's favourite Moog synthesizer to the fore.

By Design - "Stir It Together"
Osmose - "Al Knows What's Up"
Osmose - "Slomo Tattoo Dubbed"
Review: Cruising nice and easy into earshot on the Smokecloud imprint, byDesign and Osmose take a side each in chopping up some choice old classics with a tender touch to work in modern contexts. byDesign gets the whole A-side to roam over with a version of Diana King's cover of the Bob Marley classic, "Stir It Up", working on a 90s flavoured hip hop groove and dubby cuts of King's vocal. On the flip, Osmose is having a lot of fun working on Alexander O'Neal's "Fake", keeping the tough beat intact and instead letting the effects bring in the changes. While the origin of the last track on the 12" is undetectable at this point, "Slomo Tattoo Dubbed" comes on like a prime slice of Balearic goodness, packing easy horn blasts, funky guitar licks and a whole lot of filter action.

DJ Applejuice - "Good Feeling"
Osmose - "Penny's Afterhours"
Review: The nucleus of the dirrty south, and the birthplace of trap, Atlanta has more to offer than sleazy, grinding 808s. As proved by this fantastic dubby disco 7 from Smokecloud. Applejuice takes a well known Etta James sample (previously used by Pretty Lights and pilfered by Flo Rida) and massages it into a much smokier, trip-hop template while Osmose dubs out a vibrant Silver Convention string hook, drops the tempo and adds a whole bucket of low-end. Funky.

Review: Repress of the sought after Mukatsuku Records 12 containing two remastered tracks of Atlanta musician Ojeda Penn presented here according to Ojeda officially for the very first time. The A side kicks off with the extended holy grail instrumental version of 'Brotherson' taken from the Happiness album. There were two versions of the album Happiness in 1980 on the IFE independent label. They looked almost identical but the first version contained the now rarer elongated 9 & half minute jazz fused instrumental version of 'Brotherson' and then a few months later Penn recut the same album but with a much shorter version of the main track but this time adding strings and vocals assisted by Tommy Stewart from 'Bump N Hustle Music' fame. The former version is now being sold up to 500 dollors so this 180 gram single is a welcome release to the reissue market. Juno copies come in an exclusive branded card sleeve + sticker

As you'd expect, there's plenty to get the juices flowing and the heart pounding on this third volume in the series. The lineup at the time comprised of Eddie Levert, William Powell and Walter Williams, It was written and composed by Anthony Jackson, Leon Huff & Kenneth Gamble, and produced on the latter's Philadelphia International Records. The original pressing was issued as a single in late 1973 with "People Keep Tellin' Me" as its B-side. Review: Gustavo C's G.U.S label - short for 'Golden Unreleased Songs' - exists for one purpose: to offer-up limited-edition singles featuring previously unheard gems from the disco and boogie era. The label has already released buried treasure from Central Line and Kenni Rightout and here delves into the archives of obscure 80s electrofunk outfit Odyssey & Co, a band not to be confused with the far better-known Odyssey. 'It's On' was originally recorded and mixed in 1983, but for one reason or another never hit stores. It's a quality slab of soul-fired boogie-funk rich in rubbery bass guitar, spacey synths, eyes-closed vocals and post-electro machine drums. The A-side original mix is on-point, but we prefer the slightly stretched out and more dancefloor focused flip-side 'Dance Mix'.

Review: Onur Engin is one of the few producers whose edits consistently hit the spot. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Engin has a subtle touch, an approach that pays the source material due reverence. More often than not, this old-fashioned approach pays dividends. This ninth volume of his popular OE Edits series boasts four more hits, from the spiritual disco-funk of "Expansions" (a re-cut of Lonnie Liston Smith's original), to the sweaty closeness of Roberta Flack re-version "Feel Like Makin' Love". For the Balearic heads, there's also a delicious version of Santana's "Aqua Marine", and a dash of spiritual jazz in the form of "Maracatu". They'll go like hot cakes, so don't sleep.

A Love Affair (4:42)
I Love You So (4:40)
Review: If you're a fan of the glossy "City Pop" sounds that emerged from Japan in the early 1980s - a particularly gorgeous, neon-lit version of synth-pop that drew on many US soul, jazz-funk and boogie influences - then you need this "45" in your life. Both of the tracks were recorded by Junko Ohashi at different points in the early '80s but are famous for appearing on her now highly sought-after 1984 compilation Magical, which the cover art mimics. A-side 'A Love Affair' is the undoubted pick of the pair: a smooth, multi-coloured concoction that sees Ohashi singing sweetly over a blend of squelchy synth-bass, fretless bass, sparkling synthesizer chords, electrofunk flourishes, Teena Marie style Latin horns and cracking drum machine beats.

In Your Lovin' (4:53)
Review: Blissful boogie reissue from Junko Ohashi, whose 7-inch promo for 'Dancin' here functioned as the promo material for the 1983 album 'Point Zero'. Sounding just as rough, farty and raw as its original LP cut, the track is a perfect example of what Japan brought to disco - blending it largely with city pop - at the time. 'In Your Lovin', as it did on the original album, brings up the B-side with a downer-tempo funk beat, and a lyrical subject dealing with a romanticized, ideal lover.

Review: Second time around for Kyoto Jazz Massive man Shuya Okino's "Still in Love", a swelling, string-drenched slab of life-affirming disco-soul, featuring the fine vocals of sometime Fertile Ground chanteuse Navasha Daya. This version is not the same as the epic - and now insanely in-demand - original 2011 version, which came out on legendary Japanese label Especial. This time round, it's been given the seven-inch edit treatment by storied scalpel fiend Ryuhei The Man. His chops, nips and tucks are naturally well-judged, allowing the track's chunky, DJ-friendly drum breaks a chance to do their thing before dropping in Daya's vocal and Okino's stirring strings. It's a suitably respectful and on-point edit, as is the rework of original B-side "Look Ahead" featured on the flip.

A-side "Blow Your Mind", a talkbox-sporting P-funk jam that reminded us of early '80s era Roger Troutman releases - all stabbing, kaleidoscopic synth motifs, colourful solos, punchy machine drums and lyrics celebrating "funk" - is particularly special, sounding as it does like a genuine relic of a bygone era. This obscurity from Oneness, a Leicester-based roots reggae band who were persuaded to record and release a lone Brit Funk single, could well be their most potent discovery yet. 'Watching You' is typical of that era of post jazz-funk Brit-funk, with spacey synth sounds, sweet male and female vocals, clipped guitar licks and rubbery bass riding a two-step, electro-influenced groove. As was the case on the hard-to-find original 12", it comes backed by a terrific, dub-influenced 'Version' that layers up the sax and synth sounds while allowing the original groove a chance to breathe. He opens proceedings with a terrific revision of Yellowjackets' jazz-funk classic 'Matinee Idol', wisely giving plenty of airtime to the original's killer groove, punchy horns and mazy piano solos while also adding a few elements of his own (including delay-laden vocal snippets from a variety of other classic cuts). Strike (3:57)
New You (3:25)
Review: As if their recent album Beyond The Sun wasn't quite enough new material this year, Orgone return with two more brand new jams on this 7" for Colemine. "Strike" is a firing, sweaty Union cover that's focused on nothing but an unashamed party. "New You" is a softer, more sensual boogie number that oozes soaking wet guitar licks and honey-coated vocals throughout. Powerful contemporary funk from one of the most successful and prolific troupes in existence.

Don't Stop
Powerfeed (instrumental)
Review: California funk troupe Orgone really need no prior introduction and it's great to see the group line up for a release here on the Colemine Records label. Initially released on clear vinyl in limited numbers earlier in 2014 whilst label boss Terry Cole was on tour, Don't Stop has now been pressed in a larger quantity for all the budding funk selectors out there and shows two distinct sides to the Orgone sound. The title track is all about the power house vocal performance from Tiffany Austin and how Orgone "make it easy" for her to ride the groove. Flip over and "Powerfeed" is Orgone laying down a heaving slab of heavy instrumental funk.

Biz Burdayiz (3:02)
Gunesi Kesin (4:14)
Review: We're not sure who's behind these extended Turkish funk and psychedelic pieces but we're glad they've come into our lives. Heavily dubbed and spaced out, each cut casts a heady spell; "Aycicegi" is a low-riding, loose-stringed sleazy funk slice, "Biz Burdayiz" is a nodding cosmic slop of chugging beats, strange acid melts and breathy voice clips while "Gunesi Kesin" closes the show on the slinkiest walking bassline imaginable. Looking forward to the second volume....

Theme From Peter Gunn (4:16)
Review: This is a reissue of a rare 1978 single from Whirl (aka West Indies Records Limited) which blends George Clinton's famous Parliament funk with Caribbean flair. The Outfit was one of the Caribbean's funkiest bands and they always showcased the creative potential of "Spouge music", particularly with their explosive cover of Parliament's 'Dr. Funkenstein', which they renamed 'Dr. Spougenstien'. Despite its rarity, the track became a hit in Barbados and was often mistaken for an original song. The B-side features a punchy Cosmic disco version of the Peter Gunn theme.

Funk & Flare EP

Shake It (5:26)
Follow Me (4:52)
Always Be There (5:10)
The Way (6:06)
Review: John Devecchi's AKA The Owl takes flight once again here on his self titled label's tenth outing. Once again it is a head turning mix of disco and funk that carries on where his superb Concrete Funk album from 2021 left off. These are beefy cuts with authentic grooves, starting with the loose limbed playfulness of 'Shake It'. There is a more heavy, purposeful chug to 'Follow Me' which comes alive with lush strings and perfect soul vocals. 'Always Be There' leans into a house groove with noodling guitar riffs a la Chic and 'The Way' is a nice leggy and elastic pumper with expressive diva wails. Super stuff.

On It (6:41)

Getting Down (6:07)
Sly Lovin (5:02)
Review: After taking a year out (presumably to rotate his head 360- degrees and hoot at the moon), wide-eyed re-editor The Owl returns to action with another essential collection of reworks. Check first the hot-stepping James Brown style funk strut of "On It" - all rubbery but thrusting grooves and guttural grunts - before switching to the slick and rising disco goodness of "Boogie". There's something of a switch on the flip, where he works his magic on the low-slung disco tune that Paul Johnson sampled for his classic house cut "Get Get Down". Best of all, though, is the filter-sporting disco-house bagginess of "Sly Lovin", which rounds off the EP in fine style.

Review: Australian Latin combo OYOBI step up here with a fantastic remake of the stone could Gamble & Huff classic 'Don't Let It Go To Your Head'. Commissioned by Groovescooter for its 45 imprint, it's got twinkling late night chords and plenty of Latin percussion, xylophone sounds and that soaring vocals to melt your heart. On the B-side is an original Oyobi cut that heads to the dance floor on busy rhythm section work and starry-eyed chords. Both are essential little gems.

Se Te Va (4:49)
Review: 14 months on from the release of their celebrated Translations EP, Oyobi is ready to unleash their latest dancefloor-ready fusion bomb: a colourful cover of Jean Carn's Philly Soul classic 'Don't Let it Go to Your Head'. Featuring super-sweet and soulful lead vocals from Karen Lee Andrews, Oyobi's version is warm, musically intricate and fluid, re-imagining the Carn classic as a Latin-infused broken soul gem rich in timbales, twinkling pianos and jaunty Clavinet stabs. Over on the flip they revert to type with 'Se Te Va', an infectious and heavyweight fusion of low-slung disco bass and percussion-rich salsa rhythms.

Review: Gather around this one and warm your hands on some supremely hot soul here as Andrew Bukenya and Ben Sekali feature on a pair of tunes from keyboardist and percussionist Daniel Pliner aka Oyobi. This brand new fusion of Latin, funk and soul could well be a cherished reissue from the 70s such is the authentic musical style of the grooves. 'Someday (We'll All Be Free)' is nothing to do with the house anthem of the same name but is just as rousing with its buttery vocals and tender chords. On the flip is the equally brilliant 'Shiver' with a gentle broken beat and heartfelt vocals.

It is a 7" that radiates with infectious energy and heartfelt emotion as it seamlessly blends elements of pop, electronic, and dance music. The uplifting melodies soar high, the pulsating beats power things along and the soulful vocals deliver a message of resilience and positivity. Review: Correcciones Calypso returns from a generous hiatus with the fourth edition of its acclaimed edit series, replete with four re-edits that veer from the subtle to the downright brazen. Thomass Jackson and INigo Vontier invite the French duo Youkounkoun to open proceedings with an insane early 80s edit full of big drums and exotic touches that's been blowing dancefloors all around the world for the past years - and definitely resides in the brazen category, despite a lot of work having gone into it. Olta Karawame make their debut on the series with a powerful, compact edit full of ballsy keyboard riffing and a military-sized kick drum that is guaranteed to have heads banging . To complete the release label bosses Thomass and INigo deliver edits of their own with their characteristic sound, giving this EP maximum a value for money factor and entertainment from start to finish.

Review: Ohashi Junko was a real Japanese city pop specialist from the mid -70s onwards. She put put more than 15 albums and 20 Eps and 1983\s Point Zero is one of the most well loved. An original will cost you well over a hundred quid and for good reason: these sort of high energy disco sounds just cannot be slept on, with boogie, funk and soul all colouring the big, glossy grooves. Slower tunes like 'In Your Lovin' brim with slick city cool and the bright lights of a late night urban metropolis, while the strident 'Caught In A Shower' with its huge horn sections will get any floor in a spin. Once the party is over, soundtrack the comedown with sentimental jazz numbers like 'Perfect Melody' and you will round out a lovely evening in style.

Review: The world has changed a lot since Junko Ohashi put out her 1984 compilation Magical. And never is that more clear than when looking at the album's front cover which depicts the twin towers still in situ in New York. Musically, though, the album is still on point for lovers of city pop, synth funk and 80s soul. It is one of the most recognised albums of the city pop genre with its sentimental chords, clean drum machine grooves and glowing synths all perfectly fitting in with the pure and innocent city pop aesthetic. The vocals are of course key tot hat - whatever Junko is singing about, she does it with the tones of an angel.

Review: Junko Ohashi has a vast arsenal of big albums in her catalogue, and Tea For Tears from 1981 is up there with the best of them. It was produced by Kazuharu Honjo and perfectly captures a soulful moment in Japanese pop, with plenty of fusion sounds from America such as r&b. Most of the lyrics are written by Yoshiko Miura and sung in Japanese but their emotion still translates. Standout tunes include 'Telephone Number', 'Siren' and 'Maroon Person'. This reissue is one of the twelve album series this label is embarking on to mark 35 years since original release.
