Review: German pair Session Victim have long been invigorating the deep hose scene with their rare musical skill. They have managed to imbue their sounds with elements of funk, jazz and soul while keeping their grooves fresh and stylish. Their fifth studio album Low Key, Low Pressure is "an anathema to today's fast paced, industry driven musical landscape" in that it is sophisticate and unhurried, not full of obvious singles but instead a coherent body of work that really excels as a long player - not something that can be said of much of today's disposable, Spotify-ready dance music. Across the ten tunes there's a lovely cover, a fine collab with occasional partner Carsten "Erobique" Meyer and playful sounds a plenty.

Review: This timely reissue features a curated selection of standout tracks from Seu Jorge's acclaimed 2002 debut album Carolina (which was originally titled Samba Esporte Fino). The release marked the beginning of Jorge's international fame and was quickly followed by acting roles in City of God and Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic where his Portuguese covers of the late great David Bowie became iconic. Review: Composer and multi-instrumentalist Shabaka Hutchings releases his sophomore LP Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace', building on his increasingly impressive career working with Andre 3000, Sun Ra Arkestra and heading multiple bands - not least the, now dissolved, The Comet is Coming. The album marks the king's return to music, following his abandonment of the saxophone in 2023. Here he returns to his original instrumental calling, the clarinet, but a wide array of wind is on offer. The first single, the opening track 'End of Innocence', is a succinct clarinet and piano marriage. The reverberation of the keys softly emanates behind the masterfully controlled clarinet lead, with perfectly placed percussion sprinkled throughout. It's introspective, serene and understated - a supremely narrative feel that only instrumental jazz can give off.

Review: One of this year's Mercury Prize nominees, Wisdom Of Elders sees London saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings hitting a new ambitious high as he recorded the whole body of work with a troupe of South African musicians led by Mandla Mlangeni in one single day. Aptly described as afro-futurism, the collective melt down nuances of jazz, psychedelia and traditional South African music to paint a unique picture that's delightfully frenzied yet soulfully smooth all at once. Review: One online reviewer described Shakeena's sole album, 1987's 'Dance Music', as a 'lover's rock jewel'. We tend to agree. Now available again on wax for the first time since the 80s (when it was pressed and released by a tiny label and sunk without trace), the album offers an enticing mix of echo-laden drum machine beats, dub-wise reggae basslines, cheery 'FM' synth-sounds, soulful vocals and nods towards freestyle, boogie and '80s soul. Highlights are plentiful throughout, with our picks of a very strong bunch including the club-ready title track, the glossy 'Your Love' (where Shakeena raps as well as sings), the classical lovers rock of 'Reggae Music' and the sweet and tender 'We Are The Mothers of the World'.

Review: The candidly titled Ananda Shankar And His Music hears its first official reissue via Mr Bongo. Released on His Master's Voice in 1976, the album is a sublime collage of sitar-funk, traditional Indian classical music and psychedelic grooves, from the Indian sitarist, composer and musician. Nephew to India's legendary sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar, Ananda's musical family and upbringing led to a deep respect and love of the wealth of music that emanated from his birthplace of Almora, North India. However, touring America in his 20s revealed a latent love for psychedelic rock, and this debut LP captures that obsession to a T. The fusion of cyclic, North Indian tala with Americana music is best heard on the likes of 'The Lonely Rider', which envisages the a sonorous Sonoran Desert set against an action-sequenced sitar and guitar strumming. 'Back Home' achieves similar results, with a Western, soul balladic walking bass mixing effortlessly with the sitar's distinctive, tweeting "bendre" - an exotic but compelling combo.

Review: In a limited edition closing statement, sitarist and musician Anoushka Shankar (daughter of Ravi Shankar) marks the culmination of an ambitious trilogy of mini-albums. This final chapter follows Chapter I: Forever, For Now (2023) and the Grammy-nominated Chapter II: How Dark It Is Before Dawn (2024). While the previous installments drew inspiration from Berlin and California, respectively, Chapter III is deeply influenced by Shankar's Indian heritage, reflecting a return to her roots; it hears collaborations with London multi-instrumentalist Sarathy Korwar as well as San Francisco-based sarod player Alam Khan, blending traditional Indian sounds with contemporary sound design and productive elements. Star cuts such as 'Hiraeth' intertwine the soulful resonances of sitar and sarod with dynamic percussion, titularly borrowing from the Welsh language term for a deep longing or homesickness. The record coincides with a global tour set afoot by the musician in March 2025, starting in North America and concluding in India later in the year.

Review: A krautrock/punk funk/no wave/post disco hit-fest from the prolific American-born/London-based multi-instrumentalist and producer Shawn Lee. Lee, who was the drummer in the now disbanded Welsh band Carwyn Ellis & Rio 18, has made an album that's a left-field indulgence for sonic wanderers. There's a strong Neu! or Can feel to the opening and closing tracks - the bookends, if you will - so these songs are a homage to late 60s and 70s experimental music, but as invigorating as the golden generation's attempts. Elsewhere, 'Lost In London' has more of a new wave feeling; it's like a more hypnotic Gang of Four. And 'Lost In Tokyo' is a really smooth number, so the perfect soundtrack to when you feel like you can take on the world.

Review: Jazz saxophonist and playwright Archie Shepp was a cornerstone of what was considered 'avant-garde' jazz in his day. He was also a civil rights activist of implied yet huge proportions, having once accused the establishment of creating a "plantation of the mind". This also reflected in his music. Vocally critical of genre boundaries, 'Kwanza' exemplifies his stance, with the music contained on the record an upbeat and joyous yet foray through a kind of party jazz that, though it is fun, doesn't simply encourage you not to think about your predicament. Released five years after its original recording sessions, this is an important slice of history, well deserving of its reissue.

Review: An uncompromising statement in the landscape of free jazz and released in 1968, the album's title track is an 18-minute tour de force. A relentless exorcism of sound driven by Shepp's feverish tenor sax and an army of percussionists, including Beaver Harris, Norman Connor, Ed Blackwell, Frank Charles and Dennis Charles. The piece never loses momentum, a hypnotic Afro-rhythmic foundation over which Shepp's saxophone howls, growls and shrieks with raw, untamed fury. The arrival of Martin Banks and Michael Zwerin's trumpets in the final minutes momentarily grounds the chaos before it collapses in exhaustion. The additional tracks take a more traditional approach, contrasting the firestorm of the title piece. Yet, Magic of Ju-Ju remains a defining moment in Shepp's career, marking his transition into deeper explorations of African heritage, gospel, blues and contemporary r&b. The album's title, drawn from Vietnam-era GI slang, hints at Shepp's engagement with the social and political turbulence of the time. Reissued as part of the Verve By Request series on 180-gram vinyl, this is a vital milestone in Shepp's radical, boundary-pushing career.

Review: Sahib Shihab (Edmund Gregory) played with many of jazz's finest musicians. Shortly after he became one of the first jazz players to change their names due to an Islamic conversion, he joined Thelonious Monk for his Blue Note sessions. He also played with Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Pettiforn and Quincy Jones. A unique saxophonist of all stripes (baritone, alto and tenor), he was at home in every musical style, from the experimentalism of Thelonious Monk to the more direct hard bop of Art Blakey. Shihab's distinctive sound was rooted in his modernist compositions and arrangements, complemented by an intense, soulful playing style. All this is more than exemplified on this beautiful record, Oktav 1965, on which Shihab is heard in collaboration with the Danish Radio Jazz Group, and performs four measured, slow-unfurling jazz numbers, from 'Di-Da' to 'Mai Ding', all of which carry an underlying spirituality against a foreground of doomy totality.

Review: Kakashi is the latest in a long line of largely forgotten Yasuaki Shimizu albums and side projects to be given the reissue treatment. The album was originally released in Japan by Better Days back in 1981, and saw the jazz man-turned-ambient explorer join the dots between melodious, post-punk era jazz-fusion, new age influenced downtempo grooves, dub, ambient and eccentric, hard-to-pigeonhole experimentation. While musically diverse, the album hangs together beautifully. This is primarily down to two key factors: the ubiquity of Shimizu's evocative saxophone, flute and clarinet playing, and the richness of the multi-instrumentalist's superb production.

Review: David Shire has one hell of a back catalogue. Active within music since the 1960s, and specifically theatre and film soundtracks in the 1970s, while many of the biggest names behind movie scores have a tendency to explore the same avenues, and therefore wind up creating tunes for relatively similar flicks, in this case that's not really true. The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (the original, of course), All The President's Men, and parts of Saturday Night Fever give some idea as to the breadth of his mastery.
The Conversation slips right in there in terms of period and genre, but is, of course, a very different classic to a movie about a New York subway train getting hijacked or social tensions in Brooklyn at the height of the disco era. While largely focused on piano solos, we also get late night dance floor jazz, tense drone, and moody avant-garde, just in case the on-screen action wasn't brooding enough already.

Review: Master keys man Byron The Aquarius started out making hip-hop then in the last few years moved into house music and dropped some super deep and classy jams. Now he gets back to his roots with this new project from Birmingham, Alabama, alongside Shurlock, who started way back in 1990. The album takes its title from the fact both men were always told they would never make it out of their hometown. Review: Canada's famously vibrant funk scene has given rise to many gems over the years and now one of them is getting a reissue on P-Vine complete with an obi-strip. The Sidewinders' much-coveted album, Flatfoot Hustlin' is a real gem that emanates the spirit of deep-rooted funk. Famously it was recorded in the same studio as Professor Lett and Study's Love Serenade which further details about it have long been unknown and mysterious. That has only added to its allure and appeal amongst the rare groove community but of course, the music itself is the real draw. Featured tracks like 'I Like To Dance' and 'Flat Foot Hustli'' cannot fail to ignite dancefloors, while 'Time For Loving' is a more smooth groove and 'Gift to the Sun' gets nice and heavy making this an essential cop for funk aficionados.

Recorded in early 1968 with two mostly different quintets, the album features trumpeter Charles Tolliver, alternating tenor saxophonists Stanley Turrentine and Bennie Maupin, bassists Bob Cranshaw and John Williams and drummers Mickey Roker and Billy Cobham. Silver's rhythmic, economical piano style is often described as funky and nowhere is this more evident than on the album's standout opener, 'Psychedelic Sally'. With its jubilant horn theme and funky Memphis soul-inspired bass riff, the track is a rollicking seven-minute classic that blends 60s funk with 50s bop. The rest of the album maintains a playful spirit. 'Rain Dance' presents a campy, American Indian-style theme, while 'Jungle Juice' offers an exotic, tribal flavour. The warm, loose-swinging title track, 'Serenade to a Soul Sister' and the ethereal 'Kindred Spirits' add depth to the set. The album closes with the gentle piano trio ballad 'Next Time I Fall in Love'. While the first half of the album leans into a bluesy, funky vibe with Turrentine's soulful saxophone, the latter half shifts to a more boppish feel with Maupin, is a different but equally engaging dynamic. Through it all, Silver's philosophy of keeping politics and anger out of his music shines, delivering a joyous and tightly performed soul-jazz classic.
