Review: This red hot double sided 7" 'It's Time For Love' / 'The Arabian Sound Of Reggae' is a classic joint from 1975. Japan's Dub Store has licensed a reissue here that makes it affordable again to all. Bobby Ellis & Val Bennett Mazuies join forces first up on 'The Arabian Sound Of Reggae' make for a nice roots roller with hypnotic melodies layered up over the earthy drums. On the flip is Owen Grey's 'It's Time For Love' which is another gem. Both tunes were produced by Bunny Lee and bring that timeless roots sound.

Review: UK dub label Partial Records welcomes dub cats Vivian Jones and Vinney Satta for a new split 7". Jones's 'Return Ticket' kicks off in slow, libidinous fashion with sparse wooden rim shots and joyous horns bursting out of the laid back rhythm while the wailing vocals bring a traditional touch. On the flip, Satta steps up for a dub out version of the original which is more roomy, liquid and heady for those late night sessions when you can hook on to the endlessly echoing chords and bass. Review: Emotional Rescue looks to the newly rebuilt but still very much culturally separate East and West Germany of the 1980s with this new EP. It's dub reggae through a post-punk and alternative lens by Hanover artists Felix Holter aka Dubvisionist. All these cuts have a very live, improvised feel because father way he worked from rhythms first and jammed endlessly before adding the vocals. They are taken from their 1987 release 10 Tracks Of Reggae & Dub Music which was inspired by the great Adrian Sherwood label On-U Sound label, and you can hear that clearly.

'King Of My Castle' is a regnant lyrical musing, hearing a collaborative work with producer and multi-instrumentalist Bob Vito, and with additional vocals and percussion by the band Riciclette, for an impressive meditation on the nature of power and its perverse enjoyments. First produced in 1998 by Wamdue Project, this fresh reggae cover is best remembered as an era-definer, and this cover and Version extends the monarchy's rule by way of bubbling wahs, boxy fills, and owwing basses; simple, clean, effective instruments of force.

Review: The image of a reggae singer "floating around in the sun" is a peculiar one. Are we orbiting the sun, or are we *inside* said seething sphere? Perhaps only the Invaders crew could could keep their cool in such heat. An elusive Jamaican reggae band active from 1967 - and not to be confused with an early avatar of the band Madness - this four-year retrospective compilation spans the bulk of the Invaders' best work between 1970-74, in which time they made some of their most brilliant records, in the estimation of label collaborators DKR. Having managed to license a portion of the band's output for reissue (as well as their other incarnations as Splenders and Stepping Stones), and hearing anecdotes about the band from this or that person, DKR never managed to track them down directly, despite this reissue. Of course, it doesn't help that one of the front cover images really does resemble a composite missing persons sketch! Sleuthing efforts reveal untimely deaths by members, but luckily founding Invader Delroy "Bongo Pat" Forde is still around - and as 'Conquering Lion' intones, "he will return as a conquering lion, and rule...". The record is seemly, tinged with gospel, and seesaws between religious tones ('Holy Mountain') and an instrumental, cartoon charm ('African Safari').

The first disc here boasts the vocal sides of singles, with Holness and his in-house bands providing a platform for such undoubted talents as Freddie McGregor, Don Carlos, Third World, Yellowman and Sugar Minott. Disc two, meanwhile, is the one for dub heads: an exhaustive collection of instrumental 'riddims' laid down by the Roots Radics and mixed in true 'version' style by Holness.

Review: Following the recent release of the first retrospective of Andrew Weatherall remixes of Heavenly Recordings material, the long-serving London label has delivered a second volume of inspired reworks from the late, great DJ/producer. Like its predecessor, this speedy sequel contains reworks delivered by Weatherall at different points over a near 30 year period. It's all spectacular, of course, but our current favourites include a chugging, 2009 punk-funk revision of Doves' 'Compulsion', the post-punk dub headiness of Audiobooks' 2018 cut 'Dance Your Life Away', a vintage, electro-fired Two Lone Swordsmen dub of Saint Etienne and a rare, percussion-rich and extremely hard to find Sabres of Paradise tweak of Espiritu's 'Boninta Manana'.

Review: The Emotional Rescue label has done a superb job of shining a light on the British post punk scene over the last decade or so. It now does so once more in fantastic fashion with a compilation of tunes from Bristol's short lived but much loved Recreational Records. The 10 tunes have been remastered and recut and they all sound as good now as ever. Highlights include X-Certs - 'Untogether' and Electric Guitar's 'Don't Wake The Baby' which sum up the collection perfect with their jangling dub rhythms, heavily treated vocals and oodles of delay all twisting your melon. This releases was included in Bandcamp's Essential Releases 2022.

Review: Burning Sounds pay tribute to some of reggae's most crucial DJs with this new album The Magnificent 7. It is packed with artists inspired by the fundamental elements of Rastafarianism and they all speak loudly of the virtues of "living upright in those dread times." Jah Walton - later known as Joseph Cotton - kicks off with the positive vibrations of 'The Seed You Sow' before Big Youth gets deeper and darker. A brace of I-Roy jams roll on fat bass lines and King Sighta also appears twice with his natty vocals and percussive rhythms amongst a bunch of other superb sounds from the likes of Natty Love and Sister Sheron.

Review: Barely a week goes by without another Soul Jazz compilation, and never are they anything else than superb. This time out we're cerated to another collection of tunes from Kingston's seminal Studio One, but rather than the straight up reggae we're used to, it is more of a melting pot of funk, soul, jazz and dub. All of these tunes were written in the 1970s under the watchful eye of studio chief and producer Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd and there is a wealth of deep, sunny, funk cuts that have more than stood the test of time.

Review: This album from an Italian-based production outfit on Aloe Vera Records celebrates the label's early years and the unique style of one of the imprint's key acts, The Officinalis's. They were known for classics like 'Si Comme' Si' and for blending Naples and Jamaican musical cultures. Aloe Vera Records skilfully merged these worlds in their output and created a distinctive and recognisable sound that bridges past and present. These are all well-crafted sounds with warm low ends, rich bass and plenty of loved-up melodies that make it a nice escapist listen.
