Revelation Revealed
Cat: CO 12010. Rel: 28 Apr 21
  1. Revelation Revealed (3:42)
  2. Revelation Revealed (version) (3:41)
  3. Raw Dub (3:42)
  4. Riddim Section (3:43)
Review: Man like Vivian Jones gets busy on Channel One Sound Systems with this new selection of crucial versions. The original of 'Revelation Revealed' has him musing in drawn out tones over a nice nimble dub with steely synths and a contemporary feel. The versions tweaks the effects and layers in some tripped out echo, then the raw dub slows it down and makes more of the natty keys and swaggering rhythm. 'Riddim Section' closes out with a mix of all of the above that is sure to sound huge on a proper sound system.

Institutionalized Racism
Cat: ROOTS 31. Rel: 25 Mar 21
Roots/Lovers Rock
  1. Institutionalized Racism (4:02)
  2. Institutionalized Racism (version) (3:19)
Review: Belgium's Roots Vibration label is as reliable as they come for roots lovers and now they wind it back to the nineties for this crucial production by Ossie Thomas. It is one of the less well known tunes from Vivian Jones, but it shouldn't be with its computer-programmed digital drums and horns. They help guide Vivian's tremendously vocals, which muse on institutionalised racism which is just as rife decades later, so this one remains hugely relevant. Add in some heavy drops and you have a gold standard riddim.

Cat: MV 838. Rel: 07 Apr 21
Roots/Lovers Rock
  1. Vivian Jones - "Help Us Father" (3:45)
  2. Help Us Father (dub) (3:46)
  3. Robert Dallas - "Mr Wicked Man" (3:45)
  4. Mr Wicked Man (dub) (3:41)
Review: The Mellow Vibes crew serve up more perfect smoking music here with Viivian Jones and Robert Dallas pairing off on a couple of crucial dubs. Singer Jones has roots that go way back to the early eighties and now with the added gravitas of a smoky, deep, gravely vocal tone he has never sounded better. The production pairs clean chords that are bright and reflective with icy drums and plenty of swagger that cannot fail to slow your pulse. The various dubs take the tune in subtly different directions, but all of them hit equally sweetly.

  7. Gun Happy Police (2:30)
  8. Third World Man (4:17)
Review: Released in 1983 with backing from Undivided Roots, Vivian Jones made a real statement with his debut album. It's a slow, steady, spacious one with heavy rhythms and keys that seem to float. The simmering vocals from the UK artist are also key to elevating each tune and also to the fact that Jones went on to work with mainstays such as Jah Shaka, Bobby Digital, Junior Reid and many others. Vivian started as a DJ in the 70s and was a member of a number of different UK roots bands, but grew disillusioned so went to Jamaica in 1982 and has turned out more than 130 tunes since. This record includes well-know gems 'Flash It And Gwan' and 'Third World Man'.
