Review: Stochastic Resonance come through correct with their sixth instalment of the series, this time bringing together the talents of Akamoi, Ynaktera, Cosmonauta, Mariano, Ghostphace and Scual for a proper stirring of the senses on this noisy, drone-laden beat of an EP. Akamoi starts with furious swells on morphing feedback soundscapes, while Ynaktera goes for a pixelated sample workout recalling Pan's Jar Moff. Mariano's "Mysterious Ways" sets the dance tempo, amalgamating a twisted, slightly off beat pattern with bleeps and stabs and "Rome Boredom" by Ghostphace is another special moment - quick, psychotic synths fall into an absolutely terrifying ocean of distortion and satanic noise infusions. What a blinder!

Review: Nimbes is the soundtrack to a 15-minute audio visual piece of the same name by filmmaker Joanie Lemercier and Emptyset's James Ginzburg. The music itself is a collaboration between Ginzburg and Yair Elazar Glotman, a Berlin-based sound artist who recently released an album on the Italian ambient label Glacial Movements. Subtle Emptyset snarls lurk in the background of the title-track, with rumbling double bass, cellos, plucked strings and dramatic drums taking up the foreground in a cinematic piece of sound design. Glotman provides his own version of "Nimbes" that's devoid of much bass, instead overcast atmospheres and blustery orchestral movements dominate. Eric Holm, who earlier this year released his debut album on Subtext, delivers a clanking, industrial remix, somehow adding even more tension to a record best described as foreboding.

Review: Following fine EPs from Healing Force Project and Mesak in 2017 and 2018, On Board Music flips the script on its first and only vinyl release of 2019. "Point A" is the Berlin-based label's first mini-compilation and it's well worth a listen. Lanoche kicks things off via a spot of ultra-deep dub techno/ambient techno fusion (the wonderful "Love Fall", before Yugen doffs a cap towards the hypnotic, synthesizer-driven sound of late 1970s Krautrock on the suitably cosmic "Phantom". Serena Butler's "Fertile Fancy" is an immersive drift through enveloping ambient, Estrato Aurora's "Icnita" a bubbling deep techno epic and Vera Logdanini's "Vplanet" an acid-flecked trip into locked-in electronic hypnotism. In other words, this is a very fine collection of cuts.

Review: Martin Herterich aka Stockholm's Sand Circles "Motor City" gets the remix treatment. Originally appeared on Los Angelino imprint Not Not Fun back in 2012. These fine revisions are by fellow purveyors of Scandinavian underground electronics. Northern Electronics main man Abdulla Rashim's take on the title track is even more haunting and emotive than the original while Swedish trio Yen Towers take on "Endless Nights" is rather savage in its restraint and quite chilling, truth be told. Finally Astro:Dynamics affiliated Quiltland's remix of "Motor City" retains the old school charm of the original in a great modern synth-pop interpretation.

Review: With his approach to music hugely informed by the landscape around him, Yagya is a shining example of the thriving electronic music culture that emanates out of Iceland. With previous form on albums for Force Inc and Subwax, he now sidles up to Adult Contemporary for a sublime offering in the shape of "Rigning Sjo", which comes on as a masterful demonstration of floatation tank ambience and submerged techno tropes with an ethereal, orchestral beauty. Mark E follows up with a rubbery bassline and salvo of storm samples on his remix, taking a more mechanical approach than the artist is more commonly known for. Dennis Kane then finishes things off with a more taut disco-sizzling version that keeps the dreamy atmosphere but piles in the hooks.

Review: With releases on Delsin, Subwax and A Strangely Isolated Place it's plain to see that Icelandic dub techno don Yagya is facing the right direction. So it's fitting his most essential release of the lot lands on A Strangely Isolated Place, his own label. If you're going to deliver the apex of your recent work, best do it on the platform you have complete control over. Or at least that's what they (someone?) should say.
It's a deep package, with four tracks threatening to suck you further into the waves of synth and sub bass. Some would consider the tracks on here to be tools, the kind of tunes that ease transitions, and they'd be right. Providing they understood these are the best types of tools. Heavy but light, sharp but trance-infused, if we move past the labels this is basically what subtle dance music should sound like. So file under 'similar to Substance & Vainqueur'.

Review: Icelandic techno veteran Yagya enjoys a release on X/OZ that celebrates both new and old material. The tempo is noticeably ramped up on "One Weak Light" but never at the expense of that dark and mysterious Icelandic hue. "Existence Is Weird" is no slouch either, but Yagya shapes out his atmospheres with such a refined touch that you barely notice how quick the tracks are running. "A Very Long Daydream" is a gorgeous ambient track dug out of the archives, while "Getting Closer To An Unknown Goal" sees the re-release of a track Yagya released as Rhythm Of Snow back in 1999.

Review: KUMP's second multi-artist extravaganza - the Lyon-based label's first such exercise for two years -brings together tracks from a quintet of eccentric experimentalists. Clanking, horror-inspired creepiness is provided from the start via Jon The Baptist's lolloping "Hear No Evil", while those looking for some chugging, mid-tempo dancefloor sleaze should make a beeline for Maahrt's "Davardage". Elsewhere, Stove's "Chief of Nine Sisters" is an industrialist's take on tropical music with a suitably pagan twist, and Yssue and Yaws' contributions both sound like contemporary re-inventions of Nitzer Ebb style electronic body music (albeit with a touch more inherent looseness).

Review: Thomas Freiro and Alex Knoblauch recently described VEYL's first multi-artist offering as "an experiment in noise and body music". 'In practice, that means a blend of moody, paranoia-inducing drum machine chug (Years of Denial's dark, arpeggio-driven "Is It Over Yet"), bustling, funk-fuelled Nitzer Ebb revivalism (the rather fine dancefloor workout that is Autumns' brilliantly named "Get It Booked You Bastard"), red-lined industrial electro (RNXRX's "Cybele"), slamming techno/thrash metal fusion (the punch-to-the-guts that is Maenad Veyl's "Subtle Violence"), Depeche Mode style creepiness ("Beetleguise" by Poison Green) and vaguely unsettling, paranoid electronica (Exhausted Modern's superb EP closing cut "Nekam Nesen"). It's all pretty clandestine and gothic in ethos, but also really rather good.

Review: .It might be the most aptly titled EP you buy this month. Or even this year. Seoul-based Yetsuby has managed to invoke the spirit of a bubble bath with Water Flash, four tracks that feel like they might float away on a breeze, or bounce and bumble their way along the ground, representing a particularly difficult to describe type of new age electronica. Opening on the title track, it's hard not to fall in love with its combination of subtle, staccato drums, wind harmonies and glittering background effects - halfway between classic Detroit techno melody and Far Eastern ambient. 'Electro Union' ups the dancefloor ante, offering a slow mo, broken, warbling workout that feels as fresh as it does retro. 'Commercial Noisy Day' pares things back, focusing mainly on drums and accents of percussion, while 'Track 4' goes for a pure deep listening experience. Press play and you'll know what we mean.

Review: Dummy Hand is the label arm of the Noods Radio operation and it is set on releasing music that takes you to the fringes of the dancefloor. After a fine debut, it does that once more here with six twisted post-techno sounds from Yokel. He is a Noods resident, the boss of the Bristol industrial experimental label Plaque and longtime associate of Avon Terror Corps. There is a stark and stiff mechanical and industrial edge to these jerking beats which demand your body moves in new ways while distant vocal howls, snappy drum hits and gurgling synths all bring them alive. It's a fresh and fascinating sound.

Review: Two years ago, Transmigration decided to dig into much-missed Japanese producer Susumu Yokota's ambient techno work as Ebi, and more specifically an album he released in 1994 on influential German imprint Space Teddy. Here they offer up a belated sequel featuring three tracks from that sought-after set, and two from its' 1996 sequel. "Zen", a languid and unearthly affair featuring trippy, psychedelic acid lines rising above a chugging beat, is especially alluring, though the same could also be said of the intoxicatingly deep, quiet and exotic "Chuu". Elsewhere, "Sei" boasts enveloping, melancholic chords and more twisted acid riffs, while "Kaze" and "Tsuki" successfully throw additional IDM influences into the pot.

Review: Yourhighness has been throwing his weight around labels such as Born Free and Rett I Fletta, and now he comes to Cocktail D'Amore with a mischievous slant on acidic house and techno that keeps the lysergic pressure up while never reaching into excess. "Stratofortress" is a formidable beast of a track though, and Samo DJ has plenty of gutsy material to work with in laying down his snappy, electro-inflected vesion of the original. Rrose then takes the track into his dynamic, heavily textured techno dungeon where the weighty and light-footed intermingle in a brilliant mess. Gonno's version is no slouch either, opting for a grubbier acid version for the jackers to get nasty to.
