All I Do
All I Do (7")
Cat: AHS 019. Rel: 02 Jul 20
Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. All I Do (Ryuhei The Man 45 edit vocal) (4:05)
  2. All I Do (Ryuhei The Man 45 edit instrumental) (4:05)
Review: Japanese live outfit, A Hundred Birds has a thing for creating classic covers. Over the course of their career, they've recorded countless covers, including organic, string-laden interpretations of techno scene staples such as "Blackwater" (originally recorded by Octave 8) and "Knights of the Jaguar" (The Aztec Mystic). Last year they offered up another warm and wonderous cover, this time of Stevie Wonder classic "All I Do". Here it gets a new lease of life courtesy of scalpel fiend Ryu The Man, who has delivered tightened-up, floor-friendly vocal and instrumental edits of the warm, rich, soulful and undeniably summery cover version. Both are rather good, though it's the vocal version that will win over dancers.

The Shin'yuu Various Artist EP

Minimal/Tech House
  1. Birdsmakingmachine - "Moorbeet" (6:06)
  2. Locic & Dan Formless - "No Laughing Matter" (9:04)
  3. Yama Music - "Back Where You Belong" (6:31)
  4. TIJN - "Nikkee" (7:14)
Review: This EP marks something of a departure for self-proclaimed "tripped-out micro-house" imprint Yama Music, which previously acted solely as an outlet for the fast-rising production duo of the same name. They're present on this EP of course, opening side B with the pulsing pads, weighty sub-bass and glitchy beats of "Back Where You Belong", but the majority of the tracks come courtesy of like-minded producers from around the Globe. Birdsmakingmachine make a big impression with the mind-altering acid bass and crunchy machine drums of "Moorbet", while Locic and Dan Formless successfully join forces on the simultaneously chunky, weighty and hypnotic "No Laughing Matter". Our pick of a very strong bunch is TIJN's closing cut, "Nikkee", which wraps a jazzy bassline and smooth drums in gorgeously warm and woozy sci-fi chords.

Deep House
  1. Cervo - "Hesse Groove" (4:37)
  2. Taurtollo - "Om's Mehndi" (5:40)
  3. Chambers - "The Gentleman" (6:46)
  4. Yadava - "Kadampa 125" (5:08)
Review: The fourth release on Manchester-focused label Ad Hoc brings together a range of outernational grooves from some fast-rising talents. Cervo is aligned with the Banana Hill parties, and also previously released on Black Acre and Lumberjacks In Hell. His "Hesse Groove" takes a mellow, spaced out approach to dusty machine-powered house, while Taurtollo gets into a bongo-heavy jam for the eclectic warm up session. Chambers' "The Gentleman" is a loose and smooth jazzy number that revolves around a few key samples to create its seductive vibe, and then Yadava finishes the EP off with the free-roaming double bass exploration of "Kadampa 125."

  3. Meemo - "Untitled" (6:25)
  4. Yoshiko Okabe - "Tree 4" (Yamuraka club mix) (6:54)
Review: House Running are back with another of their signature compilation 12"s, calling on a host of talented producers keeping the house dream alive. Paris-based producer Colkin is bringing nothing but good vibes on piano chopping, lately bass-ing burner "Central 13". He also gets a second look in with "Gonna Be", which features none other than Detroit breakthrough star Javonntte on impossibly powerful vocals. On the flip, Meemo is on hand with the spaced out funk of "Untitled" while Yoshiko Okabe's "Tree 4" gets a 90s-style, club-ready re-rub from Yamuraka. If you're looking for high grade deep house music, look no further.

  6. Cascades (NIAN remix) (6:07)
Review: Flumo and ANMA Records link forces for this one, a collaborative project between UK-based Contours and Yadava. The music comes from various jam sessions and melds live percussion and floating keys with lush synth arpeggios. Add in drum machine, synthesizers and field recordings and you have a live and dynamic record. The whole thing flows smoothly and takes in beat driven jams that go deep with more scoring, emotionally charged tracks. Elements of the rich UK jazz scene, house, funk and more besides make this a fantastic exercise in musical warmth and soul.

Review: We welcome our 2nd part of the 90's House Collection series, on this amazing EP we find 3 rare and hard to find tracks, on the A side we have unreleased track by "Sanjay" which is Kings of Tomorrow from the early days, this is a pure floor killer, on to A2 , we have one of the most respected garage artists from the 90's Eddie Perez, with his Mentalinstrum dub of Keith Sibley's track, Stand By Me & finally the EP is rounded of with the legend that is Donnell Rush, the Redawg's Outhere Alternate Mix is a classic i its own and right and very hard to find.

Review: Tony Rodriguez has many strings to his bow already as Brothers' Vibe and the head of Mixx Records, and now he's embarking on a new venture in the shape of the Toad Red label. Focused on a harder-edged sound than the deep house he's normally associated with, Rodriguez has invited Esther Duijn and youANDme to join in the fun with some finely crafted techno for open-minded dancefloors. Meanwhile there's an original BV jam in the shape of "Dee's Drama", while Rodriguez also unveils a new modular-focused alias named Silent Rodgerz. It's a new chapter for the New Jersey mainstay, and it promises exciting things to come in the future.

  5. Scruscru - "Surfin' On Hokusai's Waves" (5:04)
  6. Buzz Compass - "That Nighter" (4:49)
Review: Belarus' Iner launches a new label with a strong cast of international names all pushing a deep and distinguished strain of house music for those who want soul and invention in equal measure. Tilman is up first with 'Sweet Dreamer', a mellow, looped up roller. Sune's 'Flutes' takes a breezier approach shaped out by fluttering jazz funk motifs. Yann Polewka celebrates the sweetest Philly strings and some classic vocal licks for a disco-infused burner you can't help but love. Iner himself keeps things loose and organic on the wonderful 'Respectfull Kind Music', while Scruscru goes for a sleek approach to chopped up funky house. That leaves it to Buzz Compass to get heady and hazy with the bass-leaning cuts coursing through 'That Nighter'.

  2. Introduction (4:42)
  3. Happy Gamma Ray (15:13)
Review: The first release from the Axis Audiophile Series. Jeff Mills has formed an electronic jazz fusion band and this 12? is a recording of their recent performance in Kobe during the TodaysArt.JP Festival. Mills manages the decks, drums and percussion and is joined Detroit legend and Underground Resistance stalwart Gerald Mitchell (Los Hermanos/Galaxy 2 Galaxy), keyboardist Yumiko Ohno and bassist Kenji Jino. "Eventide" has the same kind of urban, uplifting soul as anything Kaidi Thatham or Mark de Clive-Lowe have made and isn't bad at all! On the flip "Happy Gamma Ray" features uplifting keys and emotive chords backed by funk bass and one of Mills' unmistakeable 909 drum machine workouts. It really seems that there's no limit to this Motor City legend's creativity which has spanned nearly 30 years and we're excited about this new chapter in the Wizard's sonic universe.

Review: One Records' past decade in the business is celebrated with this second installment curated by label chief Subb-An. On 'Ten Years Of One Part 2', we have got cuts on the A side by the aforementioned Subb-An who teams up with veteran producer Mathew Jonson for a surprising collaboration titled "Red" - an infectious tech house thumper in the proper UK tradition, followed by French label staples Yamen & Eda who get deep down and dirty on the swinging and bass-driven "Mister Proper". On the flip, British up and comers Thomas Bulwer & Anna Wall deliver the infectious "Cap Clap" and the ever reliable Jack Wickham is as hypnotic as always on the handy groove tool "Yin".

Review: Gerd Janson's ever-green Running Back is here to inject some musical joy into your summer with a new various artists EP that brims with disco brilliance. "One Swallow Doesn't Make A Summer Part 2" is actually the follow up to a Various Artists sampler for a hypothetical mixtape that still hasn't been put together. This is big, colourful, synth laden dance with high spirits and feel good hooks right from the off - "Synergy Bar" is a tropical and leggy jam, Fred Asquith pumps a more driving house sound, "Spiritual Galaxy" rides on cosmic waves and "Central Store" is a darker, electro tinged cut for the late night hours.

Frankie Paul opens up with a love struck ode that rolls on natty piano chords and is detailed with acoustic riffs to keep things moving. Yellow Man's "Gaze" slows it down, with echoing claps stacked up on top of each other and the sweet piano chords retained. Mikey General then steps up with a version, "I Love You", a tune to tug at the heart strings thanks to the lyrical depth and yearning. A final version of this one closes out a lovestruck package.

It included two new songs based on Coxsone Dodd's legendary 'Breaking Up' riddim, which was first heard on an Alton Ellis single in 1969 and has been repurposed by producers ever since. This limited-edition 7" single features both of Bay Selectah's 2016 tributes: 'When I Found You', featuring toaster style rap vocals from Payoh SoulRebel, and 'Me Nah Trust Dem', which boasts a wonderfully soulful lead vocal from fellow Valmeria Roots crewmember Yeyoh Perez's more soulful and impassioned 'Me Nah Trust Dem'.

  4. Analogue Cops Aka Protectorate - "Closeaway" (5:53)
Review: In general, relatively few house and techno organisations get involved in the annual Record Store Day jamboree. This therefore makes this highly limited offering from Barcelona-based shop and vinyl distribution outfit Small Black Dots extra-special. It's a multi-artist affair featuring four suitably solid cuts sourced from labels SBD distributes. Roby J kicks things off by peppering a spacey, old school tech-house groove with attractive bleeps on 'Floods of Joy (Ancut Edit)', before Deeper Audio Cuts' Scott Featherstone goes deeper and darker on the deliciously crunchy 'Late 08'. Over on the B-side, Baffling Noise offers up the Yorkshire bleep-in-space flex of Yonder Kids alien-sounding 'Into Blip', while 3NO Records' regulars Analogue Cops AKA Protectorate successfully join the dots between deep house and tech-house ('Closeaway').

  2. Yam Who? - "Tomorrow" (4:47)

  4. Sweet Julibees - "So Strong" (4:55)
Review: Having recently released the superb sequel to their gospel-fired "Take It To Church" compilation as an epic digital download compilation, the Midnight Riot crew has decided to make some of the best cuts available on wax. The Showfa leads the way with "Joy", a bouncy, peak-time ready re-edit of a lesser-known gospel disco gem, while label boss Yam Who? once again showcases his impeccable musicianship and production skills on the breezy gospel disco stomp of "Tomorrow". Stephen King's "It's So Easy" is a subtly tooled-up take on a Blaxploitation era disco-funk workout, while Sweet Julibees' superb "So Strong" is an impeccable chunk of slap-bass sporting gospel boogie.

Deep Dubstep
  1. Systematic Error (4:42)
  2. Hello (4:12)
  3. Iridescence (4:13)
Review: Sleeper and Youngsta together on three concrete jams; you already know how heavy these are going to be. "Systematic Error" takes the lead with a sinister acid narrative that bubbles ominously before the bleeps rise to an ultimate euphoric stand off. "Hello" takes things to a much deeper, stripped back playground giving the ricocheting radar and big belly bass fills stacks of room to frolic. Finally "Iridescence" brings in the synths and brass for an emotional finale. Crucial and powerful pieces of work from two scene dons once again living up to their name.

  1. Steam Down - "Etcetera" (feat Afronaut Zu) (4:42)
  2. Yazmin Lacey - "I'll Never Stop Loving You" (4:56)
Review: Blue Note Re:imagined finds Decca and Blue Note jin their immeasurably forces for a new series of releases that rework classics from both back catalogues. They are often collisions of old and new talents and form a bridge between jazz generations. This latest offering kicks off with Steam Down's version of Wayne Shorter's "Etcetera" (Ft. Afronaut Zu) and Yazmin Lacey's version of Dodo Greene's - "I'll Never Stop Loving You." Both make for lush, involving listening and mark another fine entry in this series.
