Review: Astros De Mendoza is the brainchild of Alan Olivas and Diego H, aka Pirul and D2000. They formed in México in 2012 and have since committed themselves to a unique sound which draws on electronics and tropical traditions in equal measure to create curious, infectious grooves infused with Latin spirit. For this album, they connected with legendary Peruvian cumbia band Los Mirlos while on tour together and offered to remix their material with some choice guest producers, and Abduccion Amazonica is the end result. It’s a vibrant reimagining of the cumbia tradition while still delivered with the respect and passion the original music demands.

Review: From 1956 until 1993, Congolese outfit L'Orchestre OK Jazz and their effervescent bandleader Franco were arguably the most successful act on the country's often overlooked (but hugely popular) rumba scene. This superb double-album compilation brings together the best of their work, with a side each devoted to early 1970s independent recordings (A); tracks recorded and produced in Brussels for a South African label (B); near legendary covers of Cuban rumba classics (C) and songs based on Congolese folklore written in a number of local languages (D). It's a brilliant collection of cuts from a band that deserves wider recognition.

Review: The third album from Levon Eskenian's remarkable ensemble is its most adventurous to date. As well as reclaiming the music of esoteric teacher G. I. Gurdjieff for folk instrumentation, Zartir situates Gurdjieff in a tradition of Armenian bards and troubadours including Ashugh Jivani, Baghdasar Tbir and the legendary Sayat-Nova. In parallel, an emphasis on pieces for sacred dance reaches its apex in The Great Prayer, an entrancing collaboration between the Gurdjieff Ensemble and the National Chamber Choir of Armenia, which draws upon ritual music of multiple faiths. Arranger Eskenian says, "I believe The Great Prayer is more than a mere 'composition'. It is one of the most profound and transformative pieces I have encountered in Gurdjieff's work." Zartir was recorded in Yerevan in 2021 and mixed and completed in Munich in November 2022 by Levon Eskenian, Tigran Kuzikyan, and Manfred Eicher.

Review: This album has never been reissued before which is something of a crime: it is heavy duty NYC salsa served up with a tropical Colombian 'CosteNo' filter. Each tune brims with vitality and skilled musicianship as trombone, accordion and deep bass are all layered up and led by rebel accordionist Alfredo Gutierrez. This is a copy of the original tracklist but with the addition of three hot new bounces cuts and some liner notes. Noted singer Lucho Perez of Sonora Dinamita fame is the final addition and brings extra flare to each of these irresistible jams.

Review: Insane boogie fire from Rio circa 82; both Robson Jorge and Lincoln Olivetti were already decorated before they joined forces, but this one took both of their reputations and amplified them beyond expectation. Their one and only album, it's loaded with soul and funk from every corner of Brazil's sexy city and brought together with beautiful attention to detail; the gradual vocal breakdowns, rude synths and lavish instrumental sections, key cuts such as the Wonder-level "Aleluia", the jazz slides and glides of "Pret-A-Porter" and the sexy 80s electro boogie "Squash" will still completely flip any party 35 years later. Stunning.

Review: Bruno Hovart, Favorite Recordings' man of many talents, is at it again here. He's the man at the controls on this debut album from Pat Kalla, a French vocalist of Cameroonian heritage who has previously contributed to Hovart's Voilaaa records. Backed by Lyon band Le Super Mojo and with Hovart conjuring up his authentic '70s style production, Kalla lays down a string of superb songs that variously touch on Afro-disco, soul, Highlife, Juju, accordion-fired Cameroonian dance music of old and the kind of bright-eyed and bushy-tailed tropical fusion so popular in former French colonies in the Caribbean. It's a wonderfully joyous and breezy set, and certainly worthy of your attention.

Review: LA Lom's March 2024 show at Chicago's Thalia Hall debuts on vinyl for Record Store Day 2025 a year or so after the band's defining live moment. Just months after packing the Empty Bottle, the band returned to an even larger crowd, which served as proof of their ever-growing Chicago fanbase. Determined to keep the raw energy of their LA roots alive, they built a bright red round stage in the centre of the hall and were surrounded by fans dancing and singing from every side. The night was captured on film and tape by longtime collaborator Jacob Butler and now, the much talked about performance featuring original tracks, classic cumbia covers and a Smokey Robinson ballad finally makes its way to wax.

Review: La Mambanegra was founded by saxophonist Jacobo Velez in Cali, the world capital of salsa on the Pacific coast of Colombia. According to Salvador de Bahia, Cali is the city with the most African descendants. This strong Afro influence is clearly heard in the songs of the 15-member orchestra. El Callegueso y su Mala MaNa combines traditional salsa from the streets of New York City during the seventies with elements of Jamaican, Cuban and Colombian music, as well as funk and current hip-hop influences. Velez raised the genre "break salsa" for his simmering brew. It is presented by some of the most accomplished musicians in Colombia, including the living Latin jazz legend Eddy Martinez and the salsa band Niche, and stretches over ten, roller-coaster-like songs, with stories from the Colombian everyday life on the family history of the band founder. "El Callegueso, was the godfather of the album, but it is only when it comes to love, for example in the piece "Cantare para vos" or "El Blues de Yemanja", that is the tribute to one Ocean goddess.
