Review: Japanese live outfit, A Hundred Birds has a thing for creating classic covers. Over the course of their career, they've recorded countless covers, including organic, string-laden interpretations of techno scene staples such as "Blackwater" (originally recorded by Octave 8) and "Knights of the Jaguar" (The Aztec Mystic). Last year they offered up another warm and wonderous cover, this time of Stevie Wonder classic "All I Do". Here it gets a new lease of life courtesy of scalpel fiend Ryu The Man, who has delivered tightened-up, floor-friendly vocal and instrumental edits of the warm, rich, soulful and undeniably summery cover version. Both are rather good, though it's the vocal version that will win over dancers.

Review: Described by Legere Recordings as a 'widescreen instrumental pop anthem soaked in summer sun', 'She's In LA' sees experienced Welsh musician (and former Colorama front man) Carwyn Ellis daydream about moving to the City of Angels with a little help from Shawn Lee and Andy Platts ALA Young Gun Silver Fox. Authentically Californian in vibe and execution, with Ellis's weary lead vocals recalling the likes of Boz Scaggs and Donald Fagen above a sun-soaked, synth-sporting West Coast groove. It's utterly gorgeous and undeniably life-affirming, as is the vocal-free instrumental take showcased on side B. A future Balearic favourite, no doubt.

Review: Afrobeat revivalists Yaaba Funk are getting a welcome new lease of life here, as the Sterns Edits crew turns in a trio of fresh reworks from their largely overlooked 2010 album "Afrobeast". Contemporary broken beat hero Danvers handles side A, turning in a swinging, hot-stepping revision of sun-kissed juju number "Oman Foa" that adds just the right amount of modern dancefloor clout to an otherwise perfect Afro-soul workout. Over on side B, Ben Gomori offers up two versions of "Hwe Hwe Mu Na Yi Wompena": a spacey Afrobeat/Afro-disco style peak-time "Message of Love Edit" and the arguably superior - and certainly impressively bass-heavy - "Message of Love Live Dub".

Review: Three years after impressing with an ultra-limited debut single that took Cumbia to exciting new places, Southern Californian five-piece Yanga are finally ready to release the follow-up. Names You Can Trust has decided to do this over two concurrently released 7" singles. "Volumen 1" begins with "Encendemos", a suitably driving and psychedelic affair powered forward by layered percussion, delay-laden handclaps and chant-along group vocals. Over on the B-side, "Solo Un Poco" offers a slightly more traditional Colombian style outing blessed with jaunty accordion lines, booming bass and an insatiable Cumbia rhythm. It's not nearly as jaw dropping as the A-side, but it's still pretty darn special.

Review: Southern Californian five-piece Yanga first emerged three years ago with a now sought-after debut single that put a contemporary "Afro-Colombian" spin on the effervescent Cumbia style. Now operating on Names You Can Trust, their comeback has been spread across two must-have 7" singles. The highlight of this second "Volumen" is arguably A-side "Ron Con Limon", a viciously percussive, fuzz-soaked Cumbia outing where headline grabbing vocals and accordion lines rise above the band's infectious drums. In contrast, B-side "La Veterana" is deeper, darker and more bass-heavy, with the band's vocals and accordion melodies imparting a genuine sense of impending doom.

Review: There is scant little information out there about Yoanson & Karamie. What we do know is that they were young artists from the French African diaspora who met with Nessim Saroussi and his label Ness Music in the late 80s and were encouraged to record the music presented here. It is their only official EP and it is a brilliant mix of Afro-tropical percussions, disco, electro and vocals that call to mind the likes of Arthur Russell. Philippe de Lacroix-Herpin is the man festered here as Prof Jah Pinpin and he brings some of his signature saxophone brilliance to flipside jaunt 'The Final Bird (Le Temps D'une Vie)'.

Review: The Yoruba Singers reinterpreted Guyana folk music and infused it with Afro-roots and culture on this double A-side 7". Now for the first time every it gets reissued on vinyl. This release came a year after the group's debut album Ojinga's Own and were recorded in Barbados and released on the Green Shrimp label. They were big regional has with dancers lapping the grooves throughout the Caribbean and South America. The sounds are said to be the building blocks for what went on to become known as the Champeta Criolla sound in the Caribbean coast of Colombia.

Review: Correcciones Calypso returns from a generous hiatus with the fourth edition of its acclaimed edit series, replete with four re-edits that veer from the subtle to the downright brazen. Thomass Jackson and INigo Vontier invite the French duo Youkounkoun to open proceedings with an insane early 80s edit full of big drums and exotic touches that's been blowing dancefloors all around the world for the past years - and definitely resides in the brazen category, despite a lot of work having gone into it. Olta Karawame make their debut on the series with a powerful, compact edit full of ballsy keyboard riffing and a military-sized kick drum that is guaranteed to have heads banging . To complete the release label bosses Thomass and INigo deliver edits of their own with their characteristic sound, giving this EP maximum a value for money factor and entertainment from start to finish.

Review: "Jungle" is the second batch of Numero-reissued gems by The Young Senators from the '60s; actually, we should really say that these are released for the first time ever. The song is a no nonsense Detroit slinger with one of the best breakdowns we've heard on the label. "That's The Way It Is" is a softer tune, a delicate 60's pop song guided by organs, horns and prophetic vocals. Bang tidy.

Review: The celebration of this series continues with a reissue of the second installment of the legendary Christmas salsa album. Willie Colon and Hector Lavoe returned here to bring the unique sounds that made Volume I a Latin music classic. Review: Israeli funk quartet Sababa 5 and Japanese singer-cum-bellydancer Yurika Hanashima join forces again on 'Kokoro', a combination of two song suites: four brand new concoctions and four beloved older tracks. Sababa 5's unique combination of Middle Eastern funk and Mediterranean rhythm makes a surprisingly sensational combination with Japanese Jazz-fusion sensibilities. Opening track 'Empty Hands' is a string-led proposition by Yurika: When your hands are empty, you hold everything you need. The guitars are expressive without overpowering Yurika's gentle vocals - it's the perfect track for a sunny drive home. The real selling point here is the clutch of tracks from Sababa and Yurika's storied past, namely 'Tokyo Midnights, a jangly, groove-filled song describing a smoke-filled, drink-fueled night through the capital. Review: A collection of four old tracks and four brand new ones, 'Kokoro' is a cultural melting pot that sees Japanese belly dancer and singer Yurika Hanashima gently trilling over the Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and Afrobeat grooves of Israeli quartet Sababa 5. The fusion of East and West combines seamlessly, most notably on the title track 'Kokoro', filled with lyrical nods to the sky and the musical journey the two artists are embarking on together. The real highlight of this highly demanded release is the latter half, a collection of four tracks from Sababa 5 and Yurika's past - the standout being 'Nasnusa' from 'Tokyo Midnights', a popular track that has had recordings in Hebrew to fit demand. The strings feel perfectly calculated at every point, not even a slight misstep, whilst Yurika flawlessly serenades us, recounting memories of silhouettes against a sunset and sparkling tears gleaming by the coastline. This version is pressed on a sky blue transparent vinyl, reflecting the cerulean abstract window on the cover art.

Review: Living High in the Brass Empire is Mitchum Yacoub's latest showcase in personal stylings of tropical funk, afrobeat, cumbia, and soul; a musical patchwork threaded by a heavy, hypnotic rhythm section and powerfully vibrant horn lines. What sounds like a 12-piece ensemble was actually mostly recorded and performed by Yacoub at his home in San Diego, featuring a few close friends from local groups Sure Fire Soul Ensemble and Boostive. You'll hear rhythms from Colombia; folkloric Cuban percussion; interlocking grooves a la Fela Kuti; a 70s r&b influence and something ineffably brilliant gluing it all together.

Review: In 2002, the Japanese government recognized bamboo flute maestro Hozan Yamamoto as a "living national treasure". It was in honor of his lengthy career in music, and in particular the way he championed a traditional Japanese instrument even when he was turning his hand to Western music. "Beautiful Bamboo Flute", an album first released in 1971 and almost impossible to find since, is a superb example of this. It sees him deliver haunting, emotional and life-affirming solos over funky jazz, big band and fusion backing tracks that tend towards the fresh and funky. It's an unusual blend, but also an invigorating and exciting one.
