Fa Man (4:17)
Review: Bamma Gamma returns with a sizzling slab of funk in the form of 'Omelette' via Detroit's renowned Funk Night Records. This one is a digger's dream, raw, gritty instrumental funk with break-heavy drums, tight guitar licks and basslines so greasy they practically drip off the record. True to Funk Night's underground sound, Omelette is unapologetically retro and authentic and serves up irresistible dancefloor heat that feels like a lost '70s cut that has been newly rediscovered. For DJs looking to inject some analogue soul into their sets, it's a no-brainer.

Carnaval De L'Esprit (5:56)
Review: Major Keys revisits the jazz-funk classics with Gary Bartz's Music is My Sanctuary, now making its debut on a 12-inch. This 1977 gem, featuring the double Grammy-winning saxophonist, is an evergreen floorfiller, remastered for DJs and vinyl enthusiasts alike. With Syreeta Wright on vocals, Bill Summers and James Mtume on percussion, and arrangements by Larry Mizell, this track assembles top-tier talent. The lyrics are joyful and heartfelt, all anchored by Bartz's glorious saxophone. It's a timeless piece for both the mind and the dance floor. On Side-2, Carnaval De L'Esprit, is a lesser-known but equally brilliant jazz-funk masterpiece. Its sunny vibe lifts even the weariest spirits, cementing Major Keys as a must-have label. This record is a treasure that will be revisited time and again.

Aftershower Funk (3:41)
Fin (2:57)
Review: An intriguing song is 'Aftershower Funk', the Latin American musician Joe Bataan's curt salsa single from 1974. Fresh, cologned, groomed, and with towel firmly wrapped round hair, Bataan's largely instrumental track is about as lightfooted as the sprightly young man he was, then at 34 years old. With heavy tin drum and cowbell clangings peppered throughout, a toe-tapping mood is sure to beset the listener. B-sider 'Fin' continues the mood, uniting percussion with piano, brass, whistle and rhythm guitar; a much fuller exercise in triumphant finality.

The A-side features the infectious groove of 'Curumin Chama Cunhata Que Eu Vou Contar (Todo Dia Era Dia De indio)' from the 1981 Dadiva album and paying tribute to Brazil's Indigenous tribes. Review: Blackhole drops a vital new 7" that features a pair of tidy edits of some classic cuts. First is a Dorothy Ashby masterpiece that has been remastered and is awash with lush, golden harp sounds and gently broken drums. It's a charming escape to heavenly melodic worlds. On the flip is 'Gold' with some masterful guitars and Donny Hathaway on piano. Review: 'Imprevisto' by Bossa Tres and Ana Rosely's 'Skim Dum Dum Dum' receive well-deserved attention in their remastered reissue by Mr Bongo. Bossa Tres's track, featured as the final piece on their 1965 'Em Forma!' LP, stands out as an unmistakable Brazilian jazz classic. Review: This project stems from the mutual admiration between Daru Jones and Devonne "DJ" Harrison who, upon discovering their collaborations with Jack White, had the idea of blending rock with jazz. DJ Harrison's vintage keyboard skills and Daru's versatility made them perfect for such a rock-influenced project. Legendary guitarist Doyle Bramhall II, a longtime friend of Mr. Mandel, was ideal for the guitar role and after several years they finally got together to record this album in 2022. The result is a first 12" single, mastered at 45 rpm for exceptional sound. Here's hoping there will be more to come.

Review: This staunch collection of songs compiled by Decca hears the very best works of jazz trumpeter Chet Baker "reimagined" by a varied selection of international talent, celebrating the legacy of one of American jazz's coolest ever piston-valvers. It's no surprise that Baker earned himself the name "Prince of Cool" as the concept of cool overtook the jazz world in the 50s and 60s; likewise, the artists chosen to reimagine Baker's many sweet treats here each epitomise that same offhand effortlessness which typified Baker's playstyle. Highlights include Dodie, who leads with a Latin percussive rekeying of 'Old Devil Moon', and mxmtoon, who brings equable guitar lurches to Baker's rather lost-his-cool confession of loving excitement, 'I Fell In Love Too Easily'.

Review: Joe Bataan's 1968 sophomore album Riot! is considered a cornerstone of Latin soul and the record that truly cemented his reputation as the genre's king. Backed by the dynamic Latin Swingers band, Bataan masterfully blends Afro-Cuban rhythms, soul and funk with his signature streetwise flair. Tracks like 'It's a Good Feeling' and the title song capture the energy and emotion of late-1960s urban life while reflecting both personal and societal struggles. Its infectious grooves, raw vocal delivery and tight instrumentation mean that this one remains a timeless classic that continues to resonate across the generations.

Review: Beings' debut album There Is a Garden, features the collaborative prowess of Steve Gunn, Shahzad Ismaily, Zoh Amba, and Jim White. With a fusion of spiritually resonant sounds, each track blooms with distinct environmental and evocative qualities. The quartet's fusion of talents, evident in their first two tracks 'Flowers That Talk' and 'Happy to Be,' shows a spiritually resonant and environmentally evocative sound. Formed after a transformative performance at Germany's Monheim Triennale, the band found a unique synergy, each member contributing distinct qualities to their collective sound. With its tracklist spanning from 'Small Vows' to 'Morning Sea,' the album hints at a diverse sonic landscape ripe for exploration. Beings mark their arrival as a dynamic force in the music scene.

Review: Jorge Ben is one of the most influential Brazilian artists of his era. The so-called samba king brought all new rule-breaking style to the genre - both musically and lyrically - and fomented his own freeform acid-samba spin-off over the course of an impossibly high number of albums. One of the problems is that many of them were all given the same name, including this one, Ben. Fortunately which ever one you pick up there is joy to be had. Here there are plenty of psychedelic head twisters such as the opener 'Morre O Burro Fica O Homem' as well as deer, more soulful cuts like 'Fio Maravilha'.

Review: Tropical is Brazilian samba legend Jorge Ben Jor's fifteenth album and it blends unreleased tracks with reimagined covers like 'Taj Mahal' and 'Pais Tropical.' This superb mix of tunes embraces more pop and Western influences than before and hints at his later shift toward the World-Dance sound of the 1980s. Originally aimed at international markets, the album wasn't released in Brazil until 1977 but ably showcased Ben Jor's immense talent as he skilfully revitalises familiar tunes with fresh arrangements that capture the spirit of the times. This era-defining record from Brazil is yet another must-have.

Review: As you can probably work out from the title, this one is the tenth album from Brazil's samba king and genre game-changer Jorge Ben (it makes a change from him calling most of his albums 'Ben' to be honest.) It came first back in 1973 and features a collection of his then-most popular songs. All of them come from the first decade of his career but were all rerecorded as medleys. They bring with them sunny melodies and his signature stuffing grooves, acerbic and witty lyrics and easy to get lost in rhythms.

It now gets reissued on limited and numbered gatefold 180-gram audiophile white vinyl after being originally released in 1971. At Last
A Song For You
Pretend
A Long Time Ago
Love Is Blue
My Romance
Autumn Leaves
Can't We Be Friends
My Prayer

One Goodbye
Review: Benson's first album since rejoining Warner Music Group earlier this year, it was originally recorded in 1989 but was never released. It features the celebrated composer-arranger Robert Farnon and his orchestra and Farnon's lush arrangements beautifully complement Benson's soulful vocals and fluid guitar work on American standards like 'Autumn Leaves,' 'At Last,' and 'My Romance', as well as reimagined pop classics such as the Beatles' 'Yesterday' and Leon Russell's 'A Song For You.' The album was delayed and subsequently lost until recently rediscovered in Benson's archive and with the help of pianist, composer and arranger Randy Waldman, Benson has revived and remastered the recordings, adding new overdubs and choral arrangements. This release adds a new chapter to Benson's illustrious career, following his tenure with Warner Records from 1976 to 1993, during which he released 12 studio albums, including the triple-platinum Breezin'. Recognised as a jazz master by the National Endowment of the Arts (NEA) in 2009, Benson continues to be a giant in both jazz and contemporary music.

Their latest Blue Note release, And Then Again, recorded live at the Village Vanguard, harnesses the trio's extraordinary synergy and intuitive communication. The trio's has an unparalleled cohesion with sharp decision-making, and dynamic improvisations. The album highlights a blend of songbook classics and compositions by jazz greats, including the vibrant lead track, 'And Then Again' by Kenny Barron. Each performance moves from a calculated vision to a more spontaneous and intuitive approach. Years of critical acclaim and regular performances at the Vanguard have solidified their status, with Charlap's early experiences at the famed club fueling his passion. A thrilling and heartfelt live recording.

The seminal group featured pianist Bill Evans, bassist Scott LaFaro, and drummer Paul Motian and here they presented intimate renditions of jazz standards as well as three other, new compositions that became emblematic of their signature sound. Review: For those familiar with manchester sax player Birchall's previous forays into dub, this album offers a deep dive into the analogue 70s Jamaican dubbing techniques that have defined the genre, paying homage to the trailblazers like King Tubby and Errol Thompson. The source material is heavily percussive, resulting in a collection of dynamic, dubby drum workouts that seamlessly blend live drumming in the Count Ossie style with drum machines that recall Lee Perry's experimental approach. A highly anticipated dub companion to Nat Birchall's acclaimed Dimension of the Drums LP, this continues in a similar spirit of the previous. Drawing inspiration from classic dub albums like Keith Hudson's Pick A Dub and Winston Edwards' King Tubby Meets The Upsetter at the Grass Roots of Dub, Birchall reimagines the tracks with roots dub precision, incorporating fresh horn lines and hand drums to enhance the album's authentic, organic vibe. The LP includes two distinct mixes of a new rhythm track that wasn't part of the original album, adding an extra layer of excitement for listeners. Birchall once again handles all aspects of the albumiplaying instruments, recording, mixing and masteringiensuring a deeply personal touch in every track. All in total, eight tracks of instrumental dub bliss that transport you back to the golden era of reggae's most inventive sound.

Drawing inspiration from iconic figures like Lee Perry, Aston Family Man Barrett, and Sly Stone, Birchall expertly captures the essence of the era's sound. His meticulous attention to detail shines through in every aspect of the album, from the use of drum machines to the instrumentals and dubs reminiscent of Keith Hudson and Im & Count Ossie. Birchall's dedication to his craft is evident in his role as the sole creator of the album, handling all instruments, recording, and mixing. Review: It's often the albums that fall between the cracks that are the greatest. Violin virtuoso and singer Andrew Bird and Americana singer-songwriter Madison Cunningham shine a light on the underrated pre-Fleetwood Mac gem of an album, Buckingham Nicks, by fully covering it. Released five years before Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham went on to have mega success with Rumours, Buckingham Nicks was such a flop commercially that they were dropped by their label Polydor. But it is a cracking album and in covering it in their own style and having a palpably strong musical connection as a duo themselves, Bird and Cunningham have done it absolute justice and changed it. They have shed the 70s pop sheen of the original and made something more timeless to behold. 'Stephanie' is moody, majestic and cosmic and 'Without A Leg To Stand On' is one of the most stirring vocal performances you'll hear in 2024. A highly rewarding listen throughout.

Review: Violin extraordinaire and singer Andrew Bird teams up with an Americana icon, whose star has risen and is continuing to rise - Madison Cunningham. Bird says of Cunningham that she is one of the most talented musicians he's ever encountered. Together they've covered the 1973 album Buckingham Nicks - Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham's pre-Fleetwood Mac LP and done a brilliant job of it. Buckingham Nicks was a flop commercially when it was released and despite the duo's subsequent success it was never remastered or re-released digitally, so hard to come by. Thankfully, Cunningham and Bird bring this underrated gem into the limelight and do so in style. "The best reason to cover anyone is that little part of you that thinks you might do it better. This album epitomizes excess and confidence and it only made sense to embody that spirit ourselves," says Bird in a press release. And he's quite right - there's no misplaced arrogance here - they've nailed this homage to a classic.

Review: With a Yamaha organ and a vision, South African artist Pops Mohamed embarked on his musical journey in the mid-1970s as the bandleader and composer of Black Disco. He crafted an enthralling blend of chill-out jazz infused with futuristic drum machine sounds and spiritual nuances. His celestial organ melodies were complemented by two of the most esteemed session musicians on the South African scene: saxophone and flute virtuoso Basil Coetzee, renowned since 1974 for his solo on the hit 'Mannenberg,' and Sipho Gumede, the prodigious bassist already making waves among the veterans of the industry. Initially backed by polyphonic beats from Mohamed's electric organ and later incorporating a live drummer, Black Disco forged a distinctive sound, producing a trilogy of pioneering albums in a creative surge between 1975 and 1976. This first full reissue of their debut album, sourced from the original masters, captures the essence of their innovative spirit and showcases their groundbreaking contributions to the musical landscape. This release embodies the group's vibrant creativity and timeless artistry.

Review: Pops Mohamed's Black Disco reissues from Afrodelic offer a rare glimpse into mid-1970s South African jazz fusion. The 1975 self-titled debut features Mohamed's cosmic organ, complemented by sax and flute maestro Basil Coetzee and bassist Sipho Gumede. Their interplay creates a blissful downtempo experience, highlighted by the innovative use of a drum machine and deeply immersive improvisation. The album's tranquil vibe and cosmic soundscapes showcase Mohamed's unique approach to chill-out jazz with spiritual undertones. The 1976 follow-up, Black Disco 3, continues this journey, with Peter Odendaal and Monty Weber adding to the ensemble. The album evolves the New Age lounge aesthetic into more adventurous jazz territory. "Spiritual Feeling" is reimagined as 'Spiritual Feeling Riding the Blue,' and the centerpiece, 'Dawn,' is a ten-minute, flute-driven exploration that underscores the band's evolving sound. Both albums are reissued internationally for the first time, meticulously sourced from the original analogue tapes, preserving the rich textures and innovative spirit of Mohamed's groundbreaking work.

Review: Don Blackman's self-titled debut, released in 1982, is a jazz-funk masterpiece that has long been overlooked despite its significance in the genre. While it may not feature the familiar production of P-Funk luminaries like George Clinton, its essence resonates deeply within the Venn diagram of funk, soul and jazz-fusion, placing Blackman at the center of a unique musical nexus. Produced by Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen for GRP Records, the album stands alongside other funk classics like Fuzzy Haskins's A Whole Nother Thang and Bernie Worrell's Blacktronic Science. Tracks like 'Hearts Desire', with its captivating slap bass groove and 'Holding You, Loving You', showcasing romantic lyrics and harmonies, exemplify Blackman's artistry. His blend of aggressive jazz-funk is not only infectious but also reveals a distinctive sound that deserves recognition. Review: Don Blackman's self-titled debut album, released in 1982, stands as a testament to his versatility as a musician, blending jazz-fusion, funk, and r&b with a distinct creative vision. Though it may not have made waves on the charts, its legacy has only grown with time, cementing it as a cult classic in the 80s jazz-funk landscape. Blackman, a skilled keyboardist and vocalist, had already built a name through collaborations with heavyweights like Parliament-Funkadelic and Roy Ayers, but his debut marked a bold foray into the spotlight. The album itself feels like a rich, meticulously crafted groove machine, where Blackman's keyboard wizardry is matched by his soulful vocal delivery. Tracks like 'Heart's Desire' and 'Holding You, Loving You' highlight his knack for catchy melodies, while 'Yabba Dabba Doo' leans into playful funk, embodying the joyous experimentation that permeates the record. Each song brims with tight, polished arrangements, grounded by smooth basslines and Blackman's ability to switch between genres effortlessly. What makes this album so significant is its impact on future generations. While not an immediate commercial hit, it's become a goldmine for hip-hop producers, with many of its tracks being sampled by major artists, pulling it from obscurity into a cherished underground classic. In an era when funk and jazz were evolving, Blackman's debut was - and remains - an unsung yet influential piece of music history, offering a snapshot of an artist at the peak of his creative powers, melding diverse sounds with a rare sophistication.
