Tempa Allstars Vol 8
Cat: TEMPA 104. Rel: 30 Dec 15
Acre - "Messages" (5:59)
Epoch - "The Vile" (4:42)
Cliques - "AUT" (6:30)
Fracture - "Excalibur" (4:37)
Youngsta & Distance - "Track 5" (5:38)
Biome - "Closed Minds" (6:06)
Review: The Allstars compilation series from Tempa has proved a fine litmus test of the UK underground since it was launched in the heady early days of dubstep circa 2003. An eighth volume rounds out Tempa's 2015 business and this broadly diverse selection is proof enough that bass music is in fine health. Following his superb debut LP for Tectonic, Acre opens the doublepack with the stuttered, swung sound design of "Messages", and from here Tempa run the gamut of the UK bass scene. Epoch lays down raw and doomy steppa vibes with "The Vile", Cliques offers up futuristic footwork of "Aut" whilst both Youngsta & Distance and Biome bring the 140BPM heat.

Temple Duel (5:06)
Temple Dub (5:02)
Review: Blimey, if this isn't major meeting of musical Midas minds then we don't know what is. Alter Echo, E3 and Headland all collaborating with legendary dub flautist Diggory Kenrick. "Temple Duel" sets the scene in deep underground chambers, untouched by the sun. Reverb space is our only guide and ritual combat is the only way out as we make our way through subsonic 808 bass foundations, a near-industrial mid-range bass guitar groove, stiff snares, stick-fighting percussion and Diggory's torchlight melody. A truly fluid hypnotic narrative that arcs through the dark, if you're looking for an even foggier route flip for "Temple Dub" where the torch is extinguished and you have nothing but your sonic wits to take you home. Only Diggory knows if you make alive or not...

Danny Scrilla - "Lighter" (4:23)
Review: When it comes to deep dubby halftime, few labels are as reliable, forward-thinking or exciting as Amit's Amar. Here we find the label boss giving Scrilla the keys to last summer's hummer "Fatty Batty". Adding more melodic layers and cool double-ups on the kicks, Danny's turned in the perfect remix that pays respect to the original while taking it further into pastures unknown. Flip for "Lighter", a straight up dubwise joint with a kick so steady, reliable and dependable it could give you a reference for a mortgage. Serious.

Bukkha & Dubbing Sun & Kol Ee - "War" (Sound Control remix) (4:00)
Kol Ee & Dubbing Sun & Family Tree Sound - "Jah Jah Guide" (Breez remix) (4:39)
Review: War Remix brings together Bukkha, Dubbing Sun, Kol Ee and Family Tree Sound for a deep, bass-heavy reimagining of reggae and dub. The track is built around atmospheric grooves that flex with a blend of electronic textures and organic instrumentation and there's an undeniable urgency in the mix, with each artist adding their own layersiwhether it's the skittering percussion, dubbed-out vocals, or deep sub-bass that keeps everything moving forward. It's a remix that feels grounded in the roots of dub but pushes into new territory, a space where tradition meets innovation. Expect a sound that hits hard on the dancefloor but leaves room for introspection too. This release adds something fresh for fans of experimental reggae and dub, with enough of the old school to keep it connected.

Bad (6:34)
Badder (6:33)
Review: Although Rhythm & Sound and Basic Channel man Mark Ernestus has worked with or remixed many different artists over the years, we didn't expect him to join forces with D&B scene stalwarts Calbre and DRS. Yet that's exactly what's on offer here, as the Hardwax founder delivers two typically deep, dubbed-out techno outings crafted from portions of the pair's collaborative cut 'Badman', which is due to feature on Calbre's forthcoming sixteenth studio album, Feeling Normal. Both 'Bad' and 'Badder' are typical of Ernestus' ultra-deep and hypnotic style, with snippets of the duo's original instruments, beats and vocals echoing in and out of a warming, all-encompassing, sub-heavy groove. In a word, it's superb.

Karnage & Dayzero - "No One" (3:45)
Guesswerk - "Persian Dub" (4:55)
Review: The cavendish crusaders are at it again. And this time they're rolling out the barrels with full V/A power. Chad Dubz opens with the provocatively titled "Pricks", all sludgy, swampy and twisted while Karnage & Dayzero up the energy with a dramatic symphonic loopy nod to the far east on "No One" while Guesswerk close the show with the long awaited "Persian Dub". On dub for a good couple of years, this gravel throated swinger has been doing the business for a select amount of DJs for some time. Now it's finally yours. From Bristol with fruit. Kanomotis - "Watch Yah Steppa" (VIP) (3:18)
Rawland & Dubdiggerz - "Madness" (4:42)
Flo & Gisaza - "Northern Technique" (3:38)
Review: Slovenian dubstep dons DubDiggerz curate the new collection for their "Chapter" series with this quartet of glorious gloom. CLZ returns to the label with "Haunt", a sludgy number that sucks you in like sinking sand. It's followed by a killer VIP of "Watch Yah Steppa" where a spicy little sample is added to the mix for extra hype. Flip for "Madness" as DubDiggerz bring Rawland into the fold with a tense workout that's prone to sudden textural twists and boasts stacks of space between the percussion. Finally Flo & Gisaza close the EP with a moody marching piece that rumbles ominously building up to big waves of eastern mysticism. Depend on DeepEnd.

Rude
Review: What a double-up! Chestplate boss Distance and Croydon loyalist Cyrus get busy over two different dubstep vibes and come up with two exceptional cuts. "Titan" is the bastard half-speed son of neuro D&B and heavy metal in its make-up. Industrial, gritty and unforgiving, it's utter mechanical filth! "Rude", meanwhile, couldn't be sexier; squeezing the subs as low and as fat as they'll go, the duo have created one of the most authentic dubwise records the scene has seen for a long time.

Review: Rudeboy soldiers D Operation Drop make a long-overdue appearance on Navy Cut with three of their most forthright and frank bass jams. Real ploughman funk through and through (as always with these longstanding Italian craftsmen) there's a slow and steady sense of menace and tension running across the whole EP. 'Drainage' sets the scene with its dark demonic vocal and toxic subs, 'Yumura' is a like saw cutting through tough oak, the power behind it getting stronger and stronger with every 16, finally 'Kakatua' brings things to a close with alien bass seeping out of the mix and a cold-as-ice breakdown. Drop them while they're hot.

Sufferah
Review: Previously spotted "Rockin Da Nation" on Lion Charge only two releases ago, Italian bass collective D Operation Drop return to the highly sort-after vinyl-only imprint with two more timeless dub documents... As the title suggests, "Body Rock" is an all-out physical flavour, all percussion and a well-bodied dance dynamic. "Sufferah", meanwhile, taps deeper into the dub psyche with a resonant, relentless walking bassline, big reverb splashes and vague, vapour-like melodica lines. Strictly limited to 100 copies and never to be repressed, this won't be around for long.

Review: After a strong debut year that saw no less than five heavyweight plates, Osiris Music's low key vinyl only offshoot Lion Charge return with their first transmission of 2014. Five man Cesena crew D Operation Drop are handling proceedings this time and rep Italy hard when it comes to the dubwise sound. Idren Natural lends trad style uptown stepper "Rockin Da Nation" some added rootsical vibes with his vocal contribution, whilst "Addis Abeba" is a punchier affair that will get plenty of rewinds from the dubstep selectors out there.

Review: Sweet summer dub direct from Italy, D Operation Drop have always flirted with the more organic sound palettes but this is a whole new level. Big horns and authentic dynamics and arrangements; you really don't get much more rootsy than this... "Trident" is all about the plucked guitar line and star-gazing trumpet, "Common Rules" is more about the whole bass groove that leans heavily into the future supported by a select amount of hazy instruments. Essential for any daytime outdoor sets you have this summer.

Review: With a tried and tested pedigree on labels such as Nomad, Tuba, Gamma Audio and Bacon Dubs, Italian substers D Operation Drop jump aboard emerging imprint Subaltern and bring Geode along for the ride. The results are unnervingly stark and slick. First up "Stronghold": rhythm-heavy, it builds itself around a hypnotic hook that ricochets back and forth with mesmerising effect. "Angkor" is a more percussive workout that enjoys layers of detailed drum work tightly woven with a dark funk DNA. For added grit jump on Perverse's remix where a guttural bassline lays in wait, ready to chew all suspecting dancefloors' faces off.

Review: Well this is very interesting. A whopping 12 years since his last release, D1 returns with some outstanding cuts. Always famed and respected for his deeper, soulful take on dubstep since his manoeuvres during the movement's formative chapters on iconic labels such as Tempa and Dub Police, he's back and he's packing an even deeper, bewitching brew. 'Veto' goes all out August Pablo with its melodica lines while 'Red Stripe' maintains that traditional soundsystem feel but with more of a jazzier twist. Finally 'Midnight Blues' flips the switch for something a little more UKG in its energy and movement but still keeps that meditative pressure. Welcome back D1.

Review: LoDubs has been turning out delicious dub for nearly 15 years now, often as a bit of a lone ranger out on the west coast of America. One of its key prophets has been Vancouver's Daega Sound who has mapped the bass sound from dubstep into whatever it is called these days with real craft. Here he serves up two more compelling originals in "Gatekeeper" and "Second Strike". The former is filled with tension as the bass and hits lurch from one foot to the other and the latter is all manic loops and crashing hits. Kromestar closes out with a deadly remix that is more menacing than Mike Tyson in his prime.

Review: Some might ask if "State Of Mind" is techno? Others might ask if it's dubstep. We'd rather ask whether you even need to know... Rolling, looping and unfathomably deep, "State Of Mind" wafts with an infectious physical groove, it kicks the tired old genre discussion deep down into the gutter. "Fox Wing", meanwhile, is indeed dubstep. Perfectly executed dubstep at that; spacious, resonant and laced with just a smidgeon of eastern charm. Heavy!

Harnessing the magic of Skatalite's Jonny Moore on both sides, "Mirage" takes us deep into his own cloudy atmospheric universe upon a rolling jazz-minded drum arrangement while "Island Dub" strips everything right back to the crucial constituent parts to allow each rhythmic and dubbed element to sing. Singular.

Review: Although Dalek One has been exterminating dancefloors (sorry) for some time, it was only last summer that the deep dubstep don made his long-awaited vinyl debut. Here he keeps up the pressure via a weighty EP on Encrypted Audio. Check first the mangled, electronically scrambled rap vocals and sci-fi riddims of "Eyes Red", before getting your ears around the elongated sub-bass tones, tribal percussion and paranoid electronics of "Wire Tap". If that's not enough to set the pulse racing - and it should be - we'd recommend whacking on the crackling, sub-heavy roller that is time-travelling dancefloor treat "Man Sees Alien". In summary: pleasingly far-out.

Review: Deep dubstep heads may already be aware of Dalek One. He's been releasing good quality music for a couple of years digitally, though the Witchcraft EP appears to be his first appearance on vinyl. There's much to admire throughout, from the bombastic, pulverizing sub-bass and clandestine, Burial style sound soup of opener "Breakthrough", to the fantastically heavy and suitably trippy title track, where both bassline and beats change tempo and time signature several times throughout. The EP's other moment, "Terror Strike", is a dark, stabbing dubstep roller primed for peak-time plays at venerable bass music institutions.

Fresh from his debut album and Sam Binga collab on Cosmic Bridge, the German spell-binder makes his debut on Amit's AMAR with four bendy beat fusions. "All Thumbs" is the sound of melting music boxes flickering and burning in 808 flames, "Maelstrom" takes us much deeper into Danny's tubular bass universe and "Quasar" folds up a piece of jazz into tiny pieces before throwing it up into the air and letting it unfold like some type of dreamy parachute. Finally we climax with the swaggering data-drenched swagger jam "BFG900", a freaky world where Roald Dahl's much loved giant and the Terminator make great bedfellows.

Creepier than a graveyard picnic, it's all in the strange misty textures and powerful sense of tension before the flabbiest of subs kick in and the fun begins. Remix wise J:Kenzo does them proud with a similarly tense twist that's based around hard swaggering kicks and more eerie and bad dream textures. Elsewhere Dark Harmonics throws down a crucial solo. Brilliantly entitled "Fucking Spiders", it's an outstanding piece of 23rd century funk with all the right room and gloom we've come to expect from him. Creepy crawly.

Review: Little information regarding Dark Tantrums has been accrued in the period since "Unborn" appeared on Mala's much talked about XLR8R mix last year. That track is finally available for us mere mortals thanks to Mala's perennially on point Deep Medi imprint. Arriving with a dedication to seminal R&B producer Teddy Riley scribed across both sides of the runout groove, the lead track is just one of those records any self respecting DJ needs in their arsenal, adopting a spacious treatment of fuzzed out purple textures over a gloriously lolloping half step rhythm underlined by the kind of sub bass that consumes you when heard on a big system. Allow yourself to plunge to the depths of dystopian dubstep drama on the flip with "Storm" which retains a certain restrained quality throughout as if some immovable force is holding back the growing rave pressure.

Like all the best 12"s it's a game of two halves as he serves up the rough and the smooth. 'Break Room' is a grizzly, distorted, contemporary hot mess as crushed up drums decay in spirals all around. Darkimh - "Eclipse" (3:46)
Darkimh - "Eclipse" (Malleus remix) (3:58)
Darkimh & Taiko - "Unwarp" (3:43)
Review: Darkimh is an absolute monster and "Chain Smoker" is proof. Warped horns, scatty energy and a breakdown that will have you stewing in your own dark soul, is this doesn't have the floor screwing then nothing will. "Eclipse" packs more of an elegant punch with its flighty chimes and tightly wrapped kicks and sirens. Flip for crucial gothic remix by Malleus and a triumphantly trippy co-lab with fellow brain-warper Taiko. Pure innovation.

Lemzly Dale - "Track 5" (4:34)
BR3 - "October" (5:07)
Review: It's now five up for the Pearly Whites crew and their self titled series of on going various artist's collections. This one kicks off with the slow and heavy sounds of Deseplate's 'One Day' before the flute laced, jazz-tinged and stoner delights of Boss Mischief's 'Ice Cold.' There are more fuel good and heady sounds with lush flues from Invader Spade then Drone gets more dark and gritty on 'Lil Jug.' Lemzly Dale and BR3 close out this superb mix of trap, grime and dubstep.
