The Tropical EP
The Tropical EP (double 7" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: AOS 010. Rel: 29 Jul 20
  1. Aceedo Domingo - "Corre Riba" (4:25)
  2. Those Guys From Athens - "Na Bola" (3:45)
  3. DJ Laurel - "Peanut Man" (5:08)
  4. Monsieur Van Pratt - "Lose Your Mind" (4:24)
Review: As the title suggests, there's an undeniably humid, sun-kissed and tropical feel to Act of Sedition's latest double-dose of seven-inch re-edits. Accedo Domingo lives up to his name by adding squelchy TB-303 lines and relaxed house beats to a stirring Cape Verde dancefloor jam on "Corre Riba", before Those Guys From Athens deliver a chunky, house-style revision of a turn-of-the-80s MPB classic ("No Bola"). Over on the second "45", DJ Laurel tools up an undeniably funky disco number (the stellar "Peanut Man") before Monsieur Von Pratt makes an already heavy disco-funk number even weightier ("Lose Your Mind").

AEIOU
AEIOU (12")
Cat: FVR 151. Rel: 25 Apr 19
  1. AEIOU (Dimitri From Paris remix) (7:44)
  2. AEIOU (Dimitri From Paris Super Disco dub) (7:01)
Review: First released last summer, Cotonete and Roberto Di Melo's "AEIOU" is a deliciously warm and woozy chunk of jazz-funk/revivalist Latin disco fusion that sounds like it was recorded in 1978 rather than 2018. This time round, Dimitri From Paris is at the controls, offering up two arguably superior "Special Disco Mixes" that not only boasts more audio clarity around key instrumental parts (particularly the horns, walking bassline and previously buried Clavinet lines) but also add some fizzing new electrofunk synths. As a result, the A-side vocal version sounds like a disco scene anthem in waiting, while the high-octane flipside dub is percussive, sweaty and full throttle in the best possible way.

Afro Stomp (12")
Cat: KKS 009. Rel: 13 Jun 18
  1. To Fela's People (feat Villy) (9:54)
  2. Baba (5:47)
  3. Afro Stomp (6:25)
Review: Southern Italian sort Giovanni Damico has been in a good run of form of late, as anyone who picked up his recent EP on Lumberjacks in Hell with confirm. This retro-futurist three-track excursion is rather fine, too, with the White Rabbit Recordings founder brilliantly joining the dots between jaunty Afrobeat, rubbery boogie and spacey electrofunk. All three tracks boast classic Afro-funk guitars, with killer A-side "To Fela's People (featuring Villy)" also boasting punchy horns, tactile synth bass and some life-affirming hip-hop rhymes. Over on the flip, "Baba" is a more traditional Afrobeat workout - albeit with the addition of some mind-altering analogue bass and vintage synth flourishes - while "Afro Stomp" is a bouncy, Baldelli-inspired chunk of Afro-cosmic disco.

Cat: WAT 004. Rel: 18 Sep 20
  1. Muse (1:29)
  2. Solo (4:05)
  3. Dew (3:28)
  4. Cherry (4:44)
Review: Detroit's Jay Daniel can no longer be referred to as a protegee. The Watusi High boss is very much a talent unto his own after forming a small but superb discography in the last few years. His latest outing is another exquisite mixture of his very real drum playing skills and an ability to coax real feeling out of his lush synths. After the ambiance of 'Muse,' 'Solo' sinks into a late night vibe with glowing pads and wooden hits making for a perfectly reflective mood. 'Dew' cuts more loose into ticketing drum work that is raw and off-grid, but again soften but those gaze-inducing pads, and 'Cherry' closes out with crunchy, dance floor ready grooves.

Light Movements
Cat: COOP 006. Rel: 14 Nov 19
  1. Devotional (feat Natalie May) (4:58)
  2. Light Movements (5:13)
  3. The Flex (5:09)
  4. Calmer (feat T Williams) (4:57)
Review: Joe Danvers-McCabe may have only been releasing music for a few years, but he has his fingers in many pies, from collabs like Mr Sunshine, Summits and Charlie Haplin to labels like Curve and WotNot Music. Having previously appeared on CoOp via the second installment of their "Selectors Assemble" series, he's back in the saddle with a full-blown EP that shines a light on his deft touch in the field of broken beat. From the soul-soaked crossover potential of "Devotional" (voiced incredibly by Natalie May) to the heads down, shuffling vibes of "The Flex", this is a gold-plated trip through that classic West London sound. Also peep the T. Williams guest spot on closing track "Calmer" - this is the real deal.

All The Way

  1. All The Way (feat Tyler Daley & Kaidi Tatham) (4:00)
  2. All The Way (feat Tyler Daley & Kaidi Tatham - Flutestrumental) (3:59)
Review: A warm welcome back to the Darkhouse Family, Cardiff's finest purveyors of soul-fired instrumental hip-hop and jazz-funk flavoured broken beats. The good news is that "All The Way", which features the combined talents of guests Tyler Daley and Kaidi Tatham, is every bit as good as anything on their superb 2017 album "The Offering". The A-side original version, in particular, is superb - a languid chunk of head-nodding hip-hop soul rich in double bass, drowsy jazz horns, twinkling pianos and impassioned, emotive vocals. That said, the instrumental flipside revision, which includes extended flute solos where the vocals once say, is also impeccable.

An Extra Offering
Cat: FW 173. Rel: 14 Jun 18
  1. The Accession (Kaidi Tatham remix) (4:50)
  2. Another World (feat Esther - DJ Spinna Galactic Soul remix) (7:44)
  3. Just So You Know (feat Vanity Jay - DJ Spinna Galactic Funk remix) (5:06)
  4. GAEA (Alfie Swan remix) (7:16)
  5. Journey To Love (feat Vanity Jay - Andromeda Jones remix) (5:43)
Review: If you've not yet copped the debut album from Cardiff twosome Darkhouse Family, The Offering, we'd suggest tracking down a copy - it was one of last year's most overlooked beats albums, joyously joining the dots between hip-hop, jazz and neo-soul. Here First Word offers up "An Extra Offering" featuring a quintet of new remixes of album tracks. The quality threshold naturally remains high throughout, with Kaidi Tatham's synth bass-propelled, head-nodding rework of "The Accession" providing an early high watermark. Naturally, DJ Spinna's two reworks are both superb. His "Galactic Soul" version of "Another World" is a string-laden, house tempo synth-soul treat, while the "Galactic Funk" remix of "Just So You Know" brilliantly wraps spacey synth bass and sweet soul vocals around a slipped, off-kilter hip-hop rhythm.

Transition East
Cat: IMRC 0032. Rel: 03 Jul 20
  1. Transition East (3:25)
  2. No Space For Us (3:44)
Review: Tastemaking US jazz label International Anthem serves up this special 7" from Angel Bat Dawid in response to Emma Warren's 2019 book "Make Some Space", which told the story of London DIY music space Total Refreshment Centre. Featuring clarinets, keys and drum machines, both tracks are hugely conversational, with emotional pain and power ebbing and flowing through both originals pieces. A-side "Transition East" overflows with ideas and narrative while "No Space For Us" is more cautious and subdued, but both leave a lasting impact. The track features Angel with Ben LaMar Gay and Brazilian talents Edbrass Brasil, Romulo Alexis, Tadeu Mascarenhas, Nancy Viegas and Germano Estacio.

Rio De Janeiro
Cat: SCEP 418. Rel: 13 Sep 06
  1. Rio De Janeiro (Beatfanatic Bossatech remix)
  2. Rio De Janeiro (The Trio instrumental)
  3. Um Novo Dia (Diesler's Broken Bossa remix)
  4. Um Novo Dia (The Trio instrumental)
Review: Chanteuse Rosalia de Souza strikes back with perfect timing: The carioca artist is back on the scene with two sunshiny singles and related fizzy remixes, all on one 12"! "Um Novo Dia" becomes a speedy club samba; whereas "Rio De Janeiro" still a samba but slower and slightly more "techy"; by the hands of Diesler and Beatfanatic respectively. Both songs are taken form the acclaimed last album of Rosalia "Brasil Precisa Balançar", which was produced in Rio de Janeiro by the great bossa maestro Roberto Menescal, with Rosalia displaying her enchanting interpretation. Originally this piece written by Schema's very own Toco with S-tone Inc. first featured on the album "Installaçao do Samba" by Tomaz Di Cunto, (aka Toco). The song reveres the city of Rio, the shore that every person worldwide inspired by Brazilian music dreams of. In this 3rd single from her album, the instrumental versions follow the remixes on both sides. As ever they are magically played by the same trio of piano, double bass and drums which features in the album. Diesler is the young yet affirmed producer from Tru-Thoughts who puts his touch over "Rio De Janeiro" on Side A. Whereas the Latin-Swede going by the name of Beatfanatic treated the feel-good spirit of "Um Novo Dia". This record contains the ingredients for a long-lasting summer delight: Brazilian tunes both for dance clubs as well as relaxed listening pleasures.

  1. Sam Dees - "Child Of The Streets 2015" (5:10)
  2. Barbara Acklin - "Am I The Same Girl 2015" (4:49)
Review: The Cosmologist's Under The Influence series returns with a soul 7" especially for RSD! "Child Of The Street" by Sam Dees originates from 1973 and comes dripping with socio-political undertones, which remain intact on The Cosmologist's 2015 tweak which subtly embellishes the groove into something close to a hip hop beat. Face down and we go back a decade to 1968 and the outright soul gem "Same Girl" by Barbara Acklin, twisting it up with the lesser known piano version from Young Holt Unlimited for 5 minutes that will nice up any dance!

  1. Norma Jean (3:37)
  2. Norma Jean (instrumental) (3:37)
Review: Iconic modern soul label Daptone does a fine job of capturing the rawness of old with each and every vital 7" they put out. Now they introduce another fantastic voice to the world in the form of Napoleon Demps. A Flint Michigan native raised on classic soul sounds, he is an accomplished vocalist himself these days and has long been a fan of this label. He lay down this first single last year in Penrose Recorders in Riverside, California and the results are stunning: 'Norma Jean' is funky and groovy with plenty of vocal nuance and a heart swelling sound that soars next to sweeping strings and crisp wooden hits.

  1. The Demures - "Raining Teardrops"
  2. The Lost Generation - "The Sly, Slick & The Wicked"
Review: Stomping northern soul vibes abound on this recently unearthed gem from The Demures. With its pumping beats and heart melting harmonies it's hard to believe this went unnoticed for so many years. If you're after something a little softer and emotional then flip for The Lost Generation's "The Sly Slick And Wicked". No, they're not describing Juno's record reviewers, they're lamenting over love lost and heartbreakers in the most emphatic, string-drenched soulful way. Two beautiful cuts on one 7". Bonus.

AEIOU (12")
Cat: FVR 149. Rel: 23 Sep 19
  1. AEIOU (6:36)
  2. AEIOU (dub version) (6:47)
Review: Thanks to their superb collaborative album "Atemporal", many are now fully aware of the joint musical explorations of French band Cotonete and Brazilian singer Di Melo. That wasn't the case in early summer 2018 when their first single, "A.E.I.O.U", landed in stores. The record became a sleeper hit, was later remixed by Dimitri From Paris and is now given the re-press treatment. The original version (side A) is an inspired fusion of warm, breezy Brazilian disco and jaunty jazz-funk with one of the strongest, catchiest choruses we've heard in years. It's utterly ace all told, as is the more spacey and synth-laden B-side "Dub" mix. If you don't already own a copy, do yourself a favour and grab one of these.

Review: Steamy Brazilian disco soul from provocative dancer/actor Wilma Dias. "La Massagiste" takes off where Painel De Controle's "Relax" left us three years before in 1979. Sultry and slinky with Wilma's breathy French purring over a shiny, loose-strummed funk groove "La Massagiste", it sits sweetly between euro disco and pure Latin soul. "Exotique" raises the heat with a throbbing funk riff, vibrant horns and more direct spoken dulcets from the cult figure herself. Scorchio.

Review: Sampled by everyone from J-Lo to Jay-Z, Manu Dibango's 1972 classic is perhaps one of the most influential and heavily referenced afrofunk tracks of all time. Echoing with shades of every genre we know and love today, it still sounds just as timeless, infectious and ultimately agenda-setting today as the first time you heard it. If your collection doesn't sport this original yet, now is most certainly the time.
